In recognition of the practicality of using inclined micropiles as elements for foundation support to resist static and seismic loading conditions, specifically in retrofitting projects, this study presents an investigation into the beh avior of an inclined micropile subjected to simultaneous lateral load and bending moment. Three-dimensional numerical simulations are performed using the finite element method to assess the influence of micropile geometrical parameters such as angle of inclination, length, and diameter on the response of micropile-soil system. The Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion is used to define the behavior of soil and stabilized soil around micropile materials and the micropile, constructed of concrete and steel, is assumed to be elastic. The interaction between soil and micropile is taken into account by defining interaction elements covering both tangential and normal behavior. The study is carried out using nonlinear FEM analyses. The results of these simulations indicate that negative micropiles, in which slip surface deflects downward, have higher lateral load capacity than positive micropiles with slip surface deflecting upward. The conducted research also shows that increasing the diameter and the length of micropile increases the lateral load capacity. Increasing micropile diameter is more effective in increasing lateral load capacity. A relationship is developed from statistical regression analysis of the finite element modeling computations to estimate the lateral displacement of a micropile inclined at an angle of 30o in silty sands.

Durante a fabricação do aço as grandes siderúrgicas possuem usinas térmicas integradas aos seus processos industriais. Uma operação bastante comum na indústria siderúrgica é a geração de vapor, normalmente utilizado para a produção de trabalho mecânico em turbinas (vapor superaquecido) ou em processos de aquecimento, nos quais se emprega o vapor saturado. Estes vapores de processos também podem ser utilizados na geração de energia elétrica. Para isto, foi importante assegurar a qualidade da água e do vapor de baixa pressão (VBP) enviado para Termelétrica. Foi com este intuito que a TKCSA se preocupou em padronizar o (VBP) gerado na Caldeira Auxiliar da área de Utilidades e Caldeiras da Aciaria. O desafio era transformar o (VBP) na mesma qualidade do vapor produzido nas caldeiras recuperadoras de calor (HRSG). O procedimento adotado foi á modificação no tratamento químico, a instalação de uma monitoração química contínua e eficiente para assegurar os parâmetros químicos dentro da especificação técnica recomendada pelo EPRI - Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. Com este tratamento foi controlada as dosagens químicas, a operação da caldeira e a geração dos efluentes líquidos para o tratamento químico ambiental. Contudo foi possível tornar um mecanismo dinâmico e econômico para a empresa viabilizando a utilização do vapor na termelétrica.

O efeito de escala é um fenômeno que ocorre durante o microfresamento e trata da relação entre o raio da aresta de corte, a espessura de corte e a microestrutura da peça. O aço superduplex UNS S32750 é um importante material usado na indústria petrolífera que pode ser destinado futuramente para a fabricação de microsensores e microatuadores. No entanto, ainda não existem publicações voltadas para a microusinagem deste aço, seja na análise das forças de corte, na vida útil da ferramenta ou na integridade da superfície usinada. O presente artigo trata do estudo da rugosidade de superfície e da formação de rebarbas após o microfresamento do aço superduplex, considerando diferentes níveis de velocidade de corte e de avanço da ferramenta. A análise dos resultados é realizada considerando que este aço possui microestrutura composta por grãos das fases ferrita e austenita com diferentes taxas de recuperação elástica.

The west coast of New Zealand’s south island is host to a large number of placer goldfields that stretch from the Westport area in the north to Gillespies Beach in the south and inland to the foothills of the Southern Alps. This area is host to a large number of alluvial, glacial and strand line deposits ageing in range from Recent to Tertiary. In recent years exploration models have been developed for off shore placer deposits on the continental shelf.Gold mining on the west coast has exploited placer gold resources from the 1860s to present, and with the recent surge in the gold price the industry is currently undergoing a resurgence. The current increase in mining is dominated by small-scale mechanical operations usually involving one to two people at each site; a few larger operations also exist such as the Grey River Dredge.Mining methods range from using floating bucket dredges to small diggers. Some of the mining technologies used are similar to those employed during the great gold rushes of the 19th century. Exploration and grade control techniques can be very rudimentary often relying on previous sampling programs or wide spaced bulk sample drill holes. Some bulk sample drilling is used on the larger operations as a form of grade control, most of the small operations tend not to use any ore control sampling prior to mining. Extraction techniques relying on simple gravity based designs with riffle tables or spirals are the most commonly used. Environmental standards are very high within New Zealand and require operators to return mined areas to preagreed to landforms. The high rainfall experienced on the west coast causes challenges to operators in regard to water quality. Technical issues combined with often limited capital provide for challenges to the operations.

Some years ago, Ferroatlantica developed a new type of electrode known as the ELSA electrode. In this electrode there is a central graphite core that provides support, surrounded by an annulus of Søderberg paste that gets baked during operation. This technology has been implemented on several silicon furnaces around the world, and was reported on during the previous Infacon conference. In all electrodes, but particularly in the ELSA electrode, the quality and consistency of the paste are important for correct operation. As the type of paste varies between customers and between countries, Ferroatlantica has developed a quality control procedure for their customers of this technology. This procedure is geared to the point of view of the customer rather than the paste producer. The analysis is based on the desired flow pattern of the raw paste and on the desired mechanical and electrical properties of the baked paste, as experience has shown that these are the most important parameters to monitor in order to avoid having problems with the resulting electrodes. This paper discusses these methods of paste analysis in the light of complementary studies that have been done when there has been an electrode breakage in the different plants.

This is the second in a series of articles on microcomputers and applications in the minerals industry. The first article (ME, Feb., page 129) discussed microcomputer terms and concepts. This article will discuss software for geology and mining. The third article will cover plant, administrative, and geotechnical software applications. Introduction Geology and exploration are areas where computers have a natural fit. Large volumes of data need to be tabulated, evaluated, and made into maps and reports that allow geologists and management to make a decision on a project or mine. Until recently, the programs that performed these tasks were cumbersome and not user friendly by any stretch of the imagination. Learning time to become an expert in these programs typically would be six months or more. The computers needed to run these programs are expensive mainframes. Several years ago, the use of minicomputers became popular because of their lower cost. Programs were adapted to fit these smaller machines and became friendlier. With the advent of micros, many programs. were rewritten and used the screen capability more effectively, thus providing a real advance in user interface. Programs and Price The definition of micro, mini, and mainframe is becoming blurred. For the purposes of this article, micro refers to either an eight- or 16-bit computer, costing less than $10,000 and, more typically, under $5,000. Mini refers to a 16- or 32-bit computer that typically costs more than $25,000. Mainframe refers to a 32-bit or larger computer that costs more than $250,000. There is a large gray area between micros and minis, and minis and mainframes. Technology and prices are changing so fast that the traditional definitions have become almost meaningless and price has become a better guide. With the arrival of the minicomputer, costs for hardware began to fall, but the programs have tended to remain unfriendly. In some cases, the minicomputer acted as a front end to the mainframe. Cost of both the programs and minicomputers could easily run a minimum of $70,000. A total cost of $200,000 would not have been out of line. The average geologist and company would have a great deal of difficulty justifying such a purchase. The advent of the microcomputer has changed all that. For $3,500 to $5,000, one can buy a 16-bit micro and a printer. Plotters with six pens are available for $2,000 that will produce a 280- x 430-mm (11- x17-in.) map. For several hundred dollars, software is available to act as a word processor, an economic spread sheet, or to perform ground water calculations. In fact, some programs are available for free. Some of these programs are relatively easy to learn. In addition, programs are being developed daily that are easy to use. Structural and topographic relief in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico provides a remarkable cross section through the recently recognized 23-26 m.y.-old Questa caldera and cogenetic volcanic and plutonic rocks. Although largely eroded, remnants of an ash-flow sheet of silicic-alkalic rhyolite and associated more mafic lavas of the Latir volcanic field are preserved as far as 45 km beyond the source caldera. Within the caldera, the tuff ponded to a thickness of 2-3 km and enclosed chaotic megabreccia fragments which slumped from the caldera walls. At the time of ash-flow eruption, the volcanic field was severely deformed along northwest-trending faults related to the Miocene Rio Grande rift, with most intense deformation occurring within the caldera. Strata were steeply tilted and locally overturned along presumably listric faults. Ash- flow tuffs locally underwent secondary flowage over concurrently developing fault scarps and accumulated within structural basins as rheoignimbritic lava flows. Cogenetic batholithic granitic rocks, exposed over an area of 20 x 35 km, range from mesozonal quartz monzonite to epizonal porphyritic granite and aplite, with the shallower and more silicic phases most abundant within the caldera. Compositionally and texturally distinct granitic phases define a highly evolved resurgent intrusion within the caldera, an incomplete ring dike along its southern margin, and a large mass of less fractionated quartz monzonite south of the caldera. A negative Bouguer gravity anomaly is closely confined to the area of ex- posed granitic rocks; it also reflects boundaries of the Questa caldera. The gravity anomaly is interpreted as defining the extent of the underlying batholith, emplaced into lower parts of the volcanic sequence and underlying Precambrian rocks. Paleomagnetic determinations indicate that the granitic rocks were above Curie temperatures at the time of caldera formation and regional listric faulting, yet most are little different in radiometric age from the intensely deformed volcanic rocks. These relations indicate that the batholithic complex represents the source magma body for the volcanic rocks, into which the Questa caldera collapsed, and was largely liquid at the time of regional tectonic disruption. Compositions of the volcanic and plutonic phases changed from early calc-alkaline metaluminous rocks, to weakly peralkaline silicic rhyolite and equivalent afredsonite-acmite granite at the time of the caldera formation, then back to post- caldera calc-riebeckite granitic rocks. Maximum concentrations of alkalis and minor elements such as Rb, Th, U, Nb, Zr, and Y were reached at the time the caldera formed about 25-26 m.y. ago, but the major molybdenum mineralization of the Questa district took place when the late calc-alkaline granitic ring intrusions were emplaced about 23 m.y. ago, along the south margin of the caldera.

A process for removing sulfate from Great Salt Lake brines and other natural brines, including sea water, has been developed. Sulfate is quantitatively removed by precipitation as barium sulfate in a cyclic process employing ion-exchange techniques. Barium is continously recovered and recycled, and sodium carbonate and sulfur or sulfuric acid are produced as byproducts in quantities sufficient to more than defray the cost of desulfation.

Coal production in the United States in 2009 de-creased to 972.8 Mt (1,072.8 million st), according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This is a decline of 8.5 percent, or 90 Mt (99.1 million st) below the 2008 record level of 1.06 Gt (1,171.8 million st) (Table 1). In 2009, U.S. coal consumption decreased in all sectors while total coal stocks increased for the year. Coal consumption in the electric power sector in 2009 was lower by 10 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased by 30.6 percent and the other industrial sector declined by 16.6 percent. The commercial and institutional sector (which prior to 2008 had been called ?residential and commercial?) is the smallest of all the coal-consuming sectors and it declined by 8.4 percent in 2009. (Note: all percentage change calculations are done at the short tons level.) U.S. coal exports fell from the 2008 levels, while coal imports decreased for a second year in a row. The decline in coal consumption during the year was the consequence of the domestic economic conditions combined with the weather in 2009, which resulted in lower demand for electricity. Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers, including useful thermal output) in the U.S. decreased in 2009. Coal-based generation also decreased, resulting in a 94-Mt (104-million st) drop in coal consumed in the electric power sector. Coal use in the non-electricity sector decreased by 20.1 percent to a level of 57.9 Mt (63.9 million st). The international coal markets for most of 2009 were reflective of a worldwide economic slowdown. U.S. coal exports and imports both declined for the year. U.S. coal exports totaled 53.6 Mt (59.1 million st). This is a decrease of 20.3 Mt (22.4 million st) from the 2008 level.

Coprecipitation of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes has been applied to floccula-tion of several mineral systems. Results obtained in a study of the flocculation of kaolinite and hematite suspensions of polycationic and polyanionic electrolytes are presented. Greatly increased settling rates were observed following precipitation of positive and negative polyelectrolytes on the surface of finely divided minerals in aqueous suspension. The ratios of polycationic to polyanionic electrolytes required to produce maximum sedimentation have been shown to correspond closely with the equivalence points obtained by light scattering studies of systems containing the positive and negative polyelectrolytes by themselves. DISPERSION of colloids has been of interest to surface chemists for many years. Flocculation studies have been employed to evaluate the limits of colloid stability. In water suspensions, colloids become unstable and flocculate when the 5 potential, the potential of the kinetic solvation sheath, falls to a value at which van der Waals forces may act to draw the particles together. This may happen through an adjustment of the pH of the suspension or by addition of a salt. Optimum conditions for rapid formation of large flocs are found in the region of minimum < potential. In addition to these well known considerations, colloids in water suspensions are known to be flocculated by certain large organic macromolecules. These polyelectrolytes in some cases minimize the 5 potential and in other instances increase the attractive forces by supplying sites for hydrogen bonding.&apos; Use of organic polyelectrolytes in flocculation of mineral colloids has increased rapidly in recent years. These materials are now recognized as indispensable aids to fluid-solid separations in many extractive metallurgical operations. They have been found to increase both the settling rate in thickeners and the filtration rate of filters. In the elucidation of the characteristics of these organic reagents as floc-culants in this laboratory, it was discovered that interaction of certain polyelectrolytes had a surprisingly good effect on flocculation of mineral colloids. Experimental Procedure: The anionic flocculants used in this study were Lytron 886 and 887, produced by Monsanto Chemical Co. Both reagents are copolymers of vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride. Lime is added to Lytron 886, whereas Lytron 887 is all organic. These reagents possess two carboxyl groups for each acetate group and are therefore anionic in character. The cationic reagents used were the Peter Cooper Co. 1-X and 2-X glues. The structures are not definitely known, but the re- agents are amines and are cationic in character. The glues were prepared in the chrome-alum form. Both types of reagents may be classified as polyelectrolytes in that they are high molecular weight polymers and ionize in water. All data presented are in terms of sedimentation rate, measured in 250-ml glass-stoppered graduated cylinders. With suitable precautions such measurements are fairly reproducible and provide a sensitive means for selecting important parameters such as PH, reagent concentration, and floc size and density. Agitation was standardized with five complete end over end cycles of the suspensions in the stoppered graduated cylinders.

Effective and sustained corporate energy management programs are becoming a necessity for energy users as electricity deregulation laws are enacted on a state-by-state basis across the country and environmental regulations pertaining to emissions become more prevalent. The “Total Energy Asset Management” (TEAM) approach has been developed to assist energy end users with the development and implementation of corporate energy management programs designed to reduce energy risks and increase energy cost savings. This paper highlights the ways in which this approach can be applied to the mining industry while minimizing initial program implementation costs and increasing potential program benefits. Nearly the entire mining industry has become very focused on identifying opportunities to reduce costs per unit of yield. The industry as a whole has increasingly faced pricing pressures in large part due to the effects of global competition. The result of international marketplace participation and the emergence of higher efficiency recovery techniques have resulted in flat or even decreased prices for mining products. Thus, opportunities to reduce costs are actually opportunities to gain a competitive edge over similar mining operations. Due to the energy-intensive nature of many mining operations, the costs associated with energy are often a substantial percentage of operating costs. Therefore, it becomes very important to develop the corporate mentality that energy is an asset whose use should be optimized globally. In addition to the cost benefits of the TEAM approach, other benefits may occur such as reductions in facility greenhouse gas emissions.

All mining operations are superimposed on natural hydrologic systems. As a result, mining operations are influenced by natural hydrologic processes and require water management systems to successfully conduct mining activities. Managing water and mining-related solutions is a critical task at all stages of the mine life because of the time-dependent nature of natural and mining-related flows. Effective operation of the mining water management system requires a “systems” approach that integrates the time-dependent effects of all water and mine solution handling components. This paper discusses the concept and application of dynamic systems modeling to address the time dependent nature of mining water management systems.

Indigenous people are nearly always affected when projects enter their territory. Crop and other asset compensation can help or undermine a project’s progress depending on the approach. When compensation is handled poorly, a technically viable project can get indefinitely entangled by local unrest. Stake holders associated with compensation issues include; the state, the indigenous people, non-governmental organizations, and the developer. Appreciation for the unique perspective of indigenous peoples and the influences affecting them can avert problems and prevent delays. A review of the compensation issues encountered in Ghana during its recent gold boom can assist in avoiding problems associated with handling poor and uneducated people.

ALTHOUGH the metallurgical treatment for the Ophir Hill tailings was developed more than 20 years ago and in the interim a vast amount of experimental work was done with later-developed flotation reagents, it was found necessary to revert to the original oil reagents and their combinations with specific chemical reagents in order to obtain results of economic value. This is of especial interest because in present ore-treatment investigations later-developed flotation reagents are used almost exclusively and the coal-tar derivatives, except in certain patented reagents, are virtually neglected. These coal-tar oils and derivatives still have a definite field of application, especially in the treatment of some oxidized ores when modified sulphidization is desirable. The Ophir Hill tailings deposit is in Ophir Canyon, Tooele County, Utah, about 55 miles southwest of Salt Lake City and 25 miles south of the Tooele smelter of the International Smelting and Refining Co. A road good for trucks leads directly from the Ophir mill to the smelter. TAILINGS These tailings were produced in the old Ophir Hill gravity concentrator previous to 1921. The original mill ore was a heavy lead-zinc-copper-silver-iron sulphide ore formed by limestone replacement. The gangue is a highly siliceous lime. An assay of the original milling ore would approximate 1.0 per cent Cu, 6 to 8 per cent Pb, 6 to 8 per cent Zn, 8 to 12 oz. Ag, 18 to 25 per cent Fe, 2.0 per cent CaO, 20 to 5o per cent insoluble. The gold content was 0.005 oz. or less. Tailing was impounded in a fairly wide area in a canyon about ½ mile below the mill. A number of dirt embankments were thrown up to form settling ponds and the tailing was allowed to flow through them in series. Coarser sand deposited at the upper end of the ponds and the finer slimes settled gradually as they passed through the successive settling ponds. As soon as the coarser tailings filled a pond, the tailings were by-passed to the next pond and teams and scrapers were used to haul the deposited sand onto the banks to make them higher. The final dump was approximately 2500 ft. long and 250 ft. wide at the bottoms, with banks sloping up at 45°. The coarser sands predominated at the upper ends and sides of the ponds while the proportion of slimes increased steadily at the lower ends. The lower end of the pond contained over 50,000 tons of slime tailings, 90 per cent of which passed through a 200mesh screen. SAMPLING The entire tailings deposit was sampled by drilling vertical holes so placed as to give data concerning size segregation and the contour of the underlying ground as well as to secure an assay sample. THE Nivloc mine is 9 miles west of Silver Peak, Esmeralda County, Nevada. It has been operated by Desert Silver, Inc., since the summer of 1937. The cyanide mill treats 19o tons of silver-gold ore per day. In March of this year the main operations were about 2000 ft. west of the main shaft, which served as the downcast air passage for the mine. The mechanical blowers in use were sufficient to ventilate the west end at that time, but it was foreseen that as the mining area was extended ventilation would be an increasingly difficult problem, especially during the summer months. It was decided, therefore, to continue a raise from a point 100 ft. above the highest mining level (440-ft. level) to the surface; a distance of 443 ft. at approximately 65° From this point 40 ft. of drifting would be necessary to connect with a shallow shaft on the surface. (Fig. I.) All the raise was serviced from the 440-ft. level; costs and progress obtained in the initial 100 ft. are included in the following pages. CHOICE OF RAISE A raise in this locality would have four objects: (I) to provide an ample supply of fresh air to the working places; (2) to explore the vein from the highest mining level to the surface; (3) to provide waste fill for stopes in the area, and possibly provide a transfer for waste from the surface; (4) to provide an emergency exit in the west end of the mine. Before the mining of an ore shoot in the eastern part of the mine, a similar raise had been driven for purposes of ventilation and exploration. This raise and subsequent mining showed the vein to be noncommercial for a distance of about 250 ft. below the surface. However, in the area under operation, old surface workings showed occasional values. Thus from a development standpoint the raise was an excellent prospect. The raise chosen was a three-compartment, stulled raise having two chutes and a manway. The manway inside timber measured 4 ft. 8 in. by 4 ft. 6 in.; it carried air and water pipes, a ladderway and a slide for a timber skip. The two chutes would be used for drawing off the muck and the cleaning of the bulkhead, as well as for ore and waste passes, which would be especially useful for lateral exploration from the raise. The fairly large cross section of the raise (6 by 15 ft.) would provide a large quantity of waste for backfilling, and more could be obtained from a glory hole on the surface. TIME SCHEDULE As speed in completing the raise was the main requisite, three shifts were considered, but two shifts were decided upon when it was found that three would necessitate considerably larger fans than those available for clearing the raise. The area on which oil and gas development is reported covers 30 counties, which are included in the Texas Railroad Commission&apos;s District No. I. This area not only includes the old established Balcones fault-line group of producing fields but also includes the southwest extension of this trend and some of the deeper Wilcox (Eocene) exploratory development. (Fig. J.) In the old Balcones fault-line zone, three new fields were discovered during 1941. These fields are comparatively small, producing from Dale limestone or Austin chalk. No new fields were discovered during the year in the Edwards (Lower Cretaceous) limestone horizon. One new shallow field was discovered in the Reklaw (Eocene) sand horizon and, in the southwestern part of the district, one oil field and one gas field were discovered in the Navarro (Upper Cretaceous) sand horizon. An extremely important extension was made to the one producing Wilcox (Eocene) field of the district in the Washburn Ranch field of La Salle County. The district produced 6,650,357 bbl. during 1941, which was a 12 per cent decrease under production for 1940. Approximately 4,954,000 bbl. of this total production was produced by the three Edwards limestone fields, Luling, Salt Flat and Darst Creek, the remaining production coming from the other 43 active fields in the district. In all, 3694 wells were producing at the end of 1941, compared with 3559 wells at the end of the previous year. During the year, 139 new producing wells were completed and 29 wells were abandoned in the producing fields. The increase in producing wells represents an increase in new wells over abandonments in these fields, together with a decrease in wells temporarily shut down as of the end of 1941. The majority of production drilling was carried on in the following fields; Bee Creek, Chicon Lake, Elm Creek, Gas Ridge, Pearsall and Tenney Creek. Approximately 250 wells were drilled during 1941, of which 110 were exploratory wells completed as failures throughout the district. Considerable exploratory work was continued during 1941 along the Wilcox trend. Geophysical work employing various types of geophysical methods and leasing activity was continued along this trend, particularly by the major companies. The significance of this activity is apparent from the successful extension and development in the Washburn field of La Salle County, where several well-developed gas-and-oil producing horizons have been developed in the lower Wilcox section between 5100 and 5600 ft. as noted in the following paragraphs. Continued exploratory activity along this general trend as far as present conditions will permit is predicted for 1942. The effects of composition on the mechanical properties and aging characteristics of several alloys in the Ti-V-Cr system, with and without aluminum modifications, were evaluated. Increasing the chromium, vandium, or aluminum content increased the strength of quenched structures with chromium being the most effective strengthener. Appreciable aging response was obtained with low chromium alloys, but high chromium alloys age softened rather than. hardened. High vanadium contents had a similar effect. Aluminum additions shifted the aging behavior toward that observed in lower chromium alloys, enabling high chromium alloys to be age hardened. DURING the course of titanium alloy development many a and a-ß alloys have been evolved to commercial status. However, only one all-ß alloy has achieved this same stature. This is the Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al alloy. It is characterized by a very sluggish ß-phase decomposition reaction such that very slow cooling rates can retain the 0 phase at room temperature. In addition, very high strength levels can be obtained by long-time aging treatments. Combinations of cold or warm working followed by aging produce even further improvements in strength. This paper describes the results of a research program in which the effects of composition on the mechanical properties and aging characteristics of several alloys in the Ti-V-Cr system, with and without aluminum modifications, were evaluated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Electrolytically refined, high-purity titanium was used as the alloy base for these studies. Iodide chromium, electrolytically refined vanadium granules, and high-purity aluminum sheet were used as alloying additions. The compositions of interest were melted as 250-g ingots in a direct current arc melting furnace under a flowing atmosphere of argon. The ingots were hot forged to 3/4-in.-diam bars, vacuum annealed for 6 hr at 1800°F to reduce residual hydrogen content, and then hot swaged to 1/4-in.-diam rods. Fabrication history, and interstitial analyses after fabrication are given in Table I. All specimens to be heat treated were sealed in Vycor capsules under a partial pressure of argon. Samples used to define the ß transus were quenched from temperatures ranging from 1350° to 1100°F after holding at temperature for 15 min. Samples for aging studies were quenched from above the ß transus temperature and then aged for up to 64 hr at 750°F and for 100 hr at 850°, 900°, and 950°F. The effects of straining prior to aging were also investigated. The results of these studies were used to select the heat treatments for the tensile specimen blanks. Heat treatments of the tensile specimens are described in Table 11. Alloys were aged after solution heat treatment or after solution heat treatment and cold swaging to 50 pct reduction in area. In 1947, coal production in Western Canada was 10 Mt (11 million st) which predominantly came from 120 underground mines. By 1968 production was down to 1 Mt (1.1 million st). Production in 1981 was back up to 29 Mt (32 million st), but only 1.5 Mt (1.7 million st) of the total was from underground mines. In fact, because of competition from open-pit mines, only two underground mines were operating in 1981-the McIntyre and B.C. Coal mines. While several other underground mines are being planned, this article will deal with only the two in production. Geology The geology in Western Canada is frequently complicated; hence only more regular deposits are mined. Coal is generally thick, often steeply pitched and usually soft or well cleated. The 5000-km (3,100-mile) coal belt that runs from the Yukon to Mexico is well developed in Western Canada. It is divided into two distinct regions-the Rocky Mountain Lower Cretaceous coals and the mostly uniform level Upper Cretaceous coals of the plains area to the east. Isolated pockets of coal occur at Vancouver Island and Hat Creek. Hat Creek&apos;s massive 300-m (984-ft) thick geologically recent lignite deposit is 250 km (155 miles) inland. Geography The infrastructure of Western Canada is shown in Fig. 1 along with the locations of the two mines. Both rely on exports of premium low volatile metallurgical coal mostly to the Pacific Rim. The rail distance from both mines to port is 1100 km (684 miles)-accounting for a significant portion of the sales cost of the coal. Mining Methods Two main mining methods are used-room and pillar and hydraulic. Longwall has been attempted and is being considered again. In the past, a simple hand method used gravity to help mine most of the coal on steep pitches. Levels were driven in the seam, rising slightly to assist in draining. On the advance, mining would start at the upper level, usually from adits driven in the side of the mountain. Rooms or angles were driven up 100 m (328 ft) at a suitable angle for the coal to flow down. On retreating out of the level, the pillars would be taken, starting from the highest point, using batteries to stop coal or rock flushing down the room. Batteries consisted of three to six stout wooden posts set at an angle to resist material flow. Coal loading was directly from chutes at the bottom of raises into 1- to 2-t mine cars hauled by diesel or battery locomotives. Often output was restricted by the supply of empty cars. Mechanization began in the 1960s but was difficult in these conditions. Mines such as Canmore and Coleman continued operation into the 1970s but closed because steep seams, high methane emissions, and faulting made mining difficult. The area on which oil and gas development is reported covers 30 counties, which are included in the Texas Railroad Commission&apos;s District No. I. This area not only includes the old established Balcones fault-line group of producing fields but also includes the southwest extension of this trend and some of the deeper Wilcox (Eocene) exploratory development. (Fig. J.) In the old Balcones fault-line zone, three new fields were discovered during 1941. These fields are comparatively small, producing from Dale limestone or Austin chalk. No new fields were discovered during the year in the Edwards (Lower Cretaceous) limestone horizon. One new shallow field was discovered in the Reklaw (Eocene) sand horizon and, in the southwestern part of the district, one oil field and one gas field were discovered in the Navarro (Upper Cretaceous) sand horizon. An extremely important extension was made to the one producing Wilcox (Eocene) field of the district in the Washburn Ranch field of La Salle County. The district produced 6,650,357 bbl. during 1941, which was a 12 per cent decrease under production for 1940. Approximately 4,954,000 bbl. of this total production was produced by the three Edwards limestone fields, Luling, Salt Flat and Darst Creek, the remaining production coming from the other 43 active fields in the district. In all, 3694 wells were producing at the end of 1941, compared with 3559 wells at the end of the previous year. During the year, 139 new producing wells were completed and 29 wells were abandoned in the producing fields. The increase in producing wells represents an increase in new wells over abandonments in these fields, together with a decrease in wells temporarily shut down as of the end of 1941. The majority of production drilling was carried on in the following fields; Bee Creek, Chicon Lake, Elm Creek, Gas Ridge, Pearsall and Tenney Creek. Approximately 250 wells were drilled during 1941, of which 110 were exploratory wells completed as failures throughout the district. Considerable exploratory work was continued during 1941 along the Wilcox trend. Geophysical work employing various types of geophysical methods and leasing activity was continued along this trend, particularly by the major companies. The significance of this activity is apparent from the successful extension and development in the Washburn field of La Salle County, where several well-developed gas-and-oil producing horizons have been developed in the lower Wilcox section between 5100 and 5600 ft. as noted in the following paragraphs. Continued exploratory activity along this general trend as far as present conditions will permit is predicted for 1942.
