Cell depth has been for many years a controversial question in a flotation-machine performance. In the impeller type of machine, we are really talking about impeller submergence—i.e., the depth in the pulp at which the impeller is required to produce aeration. The Flotation Machine a Compressor A flotation machine can be considered as an air compressor or blower in which the aeration mechanism takes in air under atmospheric pressure† (14.7 Ib. per sq. in.) and blows it into the pulp (the pulp being the receiver) against a head of 14.7 plus cell depth in feet times 0.4333 lb. per sq. inch. In commercial machines the impeller is submerged in the pulp to depths ranging from about 2 ft. in the smaller machines to as much as 5 ft. in some of the larger ones. In the 2-ft. cell, the hydrostatic head on the impeller is (2 X 1.25 =) 2.50 ft. (assuming a pulp density of 1.25), equal to (2.50 X 0.4333 =) 1.078 Ib. per sq. in. For the 5-ft. cell, the hydrostatic head against which the impeller must make air is (5 X 1.25 X 0.4333 =) 2.708 Ib. per sq. inch. In the small 2-ft. machine, the volume reduction is (1.078 ÷ 0.147 + 0.01078 =) 6.85 per cent and in the large, 5-ft. machine, the volume reduction is (2.708 0.147 + 0.02708 =) 15.5 per cent. It is obvious that for unit volume of free air intake the larger machine receives a lesser (8.65 per cent less) volume of aeration* than the smaller machine. The bubbles in escaping from the pulp expand and are greater in volume at the surface than at the moment of their formation in the pulp; 7.33 and 18.4 per cent larger, respectively, in the small and large machines. Just how this situation affects flotation is not known. It is interesting to note, however, that the bubbles are smaller in the zone of the coarsest particles and largest in the upper zones of the her, more easily suspended mineral particles. It would seem that the relationship might be reversed advantageously. The deep cell is at a greater disadvantage in this respect than the shallow cell. Nothing, however, presumably can be done about this situation. The shallow cell is a partial corrective. Not only does the compression ratio of aeration increase with impeller submergence but the hydrostatic head against which the impeller must operate also increases. Anchored steel pipe piles are being used more frequently in British Columbia for shoreline projects such as public ferries, cruise ship docks, containership terminals and locally in the expansion of the Vancouver waterfront convention center. While a 36? diameter driven pile may provide adequate compression loads it will not always achieve enough penetration to provide the required tension loading. That is why bundles of threaded anchors or strands are drilled through the center, past the pile tip, and anchored into the underlying strata. Drilling up to 250 feet deep through the piles in variable water bearing strata presents challenges. Southwest Contacting Ltd. (SWC) recently completed the three largest anchored pile projects in BC; Vancouver Port and Convention Center Expansion, Vanterm Container Terminal and the new Prince Rupert Cruise Ship Terminal. This paper will present the separate challenges encountered drilling the anchors. At Prince Rupert, the recently completed Northland Cruise Ship Dock ultimately required a cased system to drill and install triple thread bar anchors. When 200 foot long steel pipe piling was unable to penetrate the highly fractured gneiss/schist bedrock to obtain a seal and consolidation grouting was unsuccessful, a modified cased system was advanced deep enough into the rock to eventually seal. The 3-#20 bars were changed to 12-strands since the bars wouldn?t fit through the smaller cased hole. The options were limited because each dolphin only had enough room for a small hydraulic drill rig that wouldn?t have the power to fully case the holes. The Canada Place Pier Extension in Vancouver?s Harbor led to the development of an innovative tip design used later at Vanterm. The 36? diameter steel pipe piles were driven closed end but modified to permit drilling through a concrete plug at the base. The driving of the piles at Canada Place often knocked out the plug so we were faced with 50 feet of sand up inside the pile when the drilling started. This led to discussions on how to safely remove the sand, solidify the tip, and continue drilling to get past the tip without undermining the pile. Finally, Vanterm Berth Extension was completed with a unique drilling system because the pile tips stopped in hydraulic sands, as opposed to the native till. We were faced with advancing the casing to the till without undermining the base of the pile. With 100 psi water pressure at the pile base after we broke through the concrete plug, the trick was to prevent charging the sand with our 250 psi air which liquefies it and forced it up our drill casing. And of course, it has to happen just before Christmas holidays!

THE behavior of molybdenum and its surface oxides in oxidizing and reducing gas atmospheres and in high vacua at elevated temperatures is a question of scientific and technical importance The use of molybdenum as a metal or as an important component in alloys in oxidizing atmospheres at elevated temperatures has been limited because of the unprotective nature of its oxide film and the volatility of this oxide at moderate temperatures. This communication will present results of a vacuum microbalance study 1,2 of the following problems. (11) the oxidation kinetics in the temperature range of 250° to 450°C; (2) the reduction with pure hydrogen of thin oxide films formed on molybdenum; (3) the volatility of the thin oxide films, and (4) the vacuum oxidation of molybdenum at high temperatures. Molybdenum is an interesting metal to study for the following reasons: (I) although the oxide-to-metal-volume ratio is greater than one, the metal is not considered protective; (2) the metal oxidizes readily at temperatures of 250°C and higher; (3) the oxides of the metal are reduced at temperatures as low as 500°C by pure hydrogen; (4) the oxide MoO3 melts at 795°C; and (5) the oxides of molybdenum are volatile at moderate temperatures. The following variables are studied in the oxidation kinetics. time, temperature, pressure, surface preparation, surface area, concentration of inert gas in the lattice, cycling procedures in temperature, vacuum effect and high temperature vacuum oxidation The general interpretation of many of these factors has been previously discussed. LITERATURE The oxidation of molybdenum has not been studied critically. Although" many studies have probably been made on the kinetics of the oxidation process, none has been reported in the literature available to us. The crystal structures found in the oxidation of molybdenum have been studied by Hickman and Culbransen 4 Their results showed that MoO2 is the oxide which is stable in contact with the metallic subgtrate throughout the temperature range 300 to 700°C. As the film thickens in the low temperature range, MoO3 becomes predominant on the surface. Above 400°C, Mo03 is no longer observed, Mo02 being the only oxide found. Hagg and Magneli5 have shown from an X ray study that the a-phase, orthorhombic MoO3 is stable up to 1050°C. Two other phases, ß and ß', with compositions close to Mo02 90 are also obtained The formula for the ß phase is not given but that of the ß' phase is defined as Mo9026. The heats of formation of lithium chloride and lithium oxalate were determined with the aid of a Bureau-developed, glass Dewar-type solution calorimeter which uses thermistors as its temperature sensing element. Values obtained at 298.15° K were -98.38 ± 0.54 kcal/mole for lithium chloride and -329.02 ± 0.79 kcal/mole for lithium oxalate, using graphite as the standard state for carbon.

The lower and the upper parts of the Doushantuo Fonnation, Hubei Province, China, contain silicate-type K-rich beds (illite and feldspar), and intraclastic phosphorites, as well as Ag-V and V deposits in a "Black Shale Series". The K-rich beds fonned in an anoxic basin whereas the phosphorites fonned in a more oxic and higher energy depositional environment. The Black Shale Series occurs in the lower and upper parts of the Doushantuo Fonnation; that in the upper part consists of black illite shale and dark gray dolostone, and contains Se-rich Ag and V deposits. These deposits are of more industrial significance than the previously discovered Ni-Mo polyelement sulfide deposits which occur in the Lower Cambrian Black Shales Series of South China. Studies of lithotype, sedimentary sequence, and geochemistry of the Doushantuo Fonnation have led to more attention being focused on the uppennost Black Shale Series and its Ag-V and V deposits. There are three ore types: black, Ag-V-rich, illite shale; black, V-rich, illite shale; and dark gray, Ag-Vrich, fmely crystalline dolostone. The first two ore types contain 3070 to 5% Corg and the last, 1.25%. The Ag-bearing minerals are naumannite, argyrodite, aguilarite, acanthite, and native silver that occur as inclusions in pyrite associated with barite. Vanadium substitutes for AI in illite and is also related to organic-matter contents. Because (1) the pre-Sinian Kongling Group contains one to three times greater than the Clark Ag value; (2) black, illite shale has a negative Ce anomaly; and (3) there are large occurrences of black, K-rich, tuffaceous, fme siltstone, the sources of Ag are thought to include subaerial and submarine volcanic materials. It is proposed that Ag, V, and Se were absorbed by clay particles and organic matter during syngenetic deposition in an anoxic environment; Ag subsequently was reconcentrated into sulfides and selenides, whereas V was incorporated structurally into illite during early and late diagenesis. These types of Black Shale Series-hosted Ag-V and V deposits are, therefore, considered to be sedimentary-diagenetic in origin.

Revealing the periodic fracture pattern of the main roof and the key influencing factors of the support resistance is crucial for strata control and support selection of the shallow buried working face with large mining height. Based on the cantilever beam theory, an improved step rock beam model, and the measured strata pressure data of the 12,401 working face in Shangwan Mine, the mine pressure behavior law of the shallow buried with a large mining height working face was analyzed. The results show that both ratio of maximum principal stress to load (σ1/q) and ratio of maximum shear stress to load (τmax/q) inside the main roof increase with increasing periodic advancing distance, while the ratio of maximum shear stress to maximum principal stress (K) is the opposite, indicating that the increase rate of σ1/q is higher than that of τmax/q. K is less than 1 when the periodic advancing distance exceeds 8 m, indicating that the periodic fracture of the main roof will be dominated by tensile failure. Support resistance increases with increasing immediate roof thickness, main roof thickness, periodic fracture step distance of the main roof, and mining height, and decreases nonlinearly with increasing friction coefficient of periodic fracture rock block hinge surface. The main roof thickness, the periodic fracture distance of main roof, and the friction coefficient of the hinge surface of the periodic fracture rock block are the key factors influencing the support resistance. The advance breaking of the main roof and increasing the friction coefficient of the hinged surface of the main roof can reduce the support resistance of the working face. The support resistance of the 12,401 working face in Shangwan Mine presents an arch distribution characteristic. The average periodic weighting step interval, average support resistance, and dynamic load coefficient are 15.6 m, 17,552 kN, and 1.3, respectively. Finally, the rationality and validity of the model are verified by comparing the measured and theoretical values of the support resistance in the 12,401 working face of Shangwan Mine and other shallow coal seams with large mining height.

"A new 2D computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model was developed for the gaseous reduction of iron ore fines in an innovative reactor-multilayer moving-fluidized bed. The solution of the proposed model was performed by integration of FLUENT and PHOENICS. Numerical results of cold state were compared with the experimental data and the agreement between them was good. A hot case-gaseous reduction of iron ore fines using syngas with this reactor was simulated using the present CFD mode. Results indicate that under the given simulation conditions, total pressure drop is 90 Pa less than that under cold state though the gas supply rate is increased about 4m3 under hot state. Gas temperature decreases from 1073 K at the bottom to 500 K at the top, Utilization efficiency of the gas reduction potential is about 27 %. For ore fines reduction, the final reduction fraction could reach 0. 70 and solid temperature 900 K.IntroductionWith the development of coal gasification technology, various coals could be converted to Syngas with air or steam. Therefore gaseous reduction of iron ore fmes becomes an acceptable alternative process for iron making besides blast furnace route[!] and moreover it still has some advantages in processing low grade iron ore fines[2]. Gaseous reduction using fluidized bed technologies is the most competitive in all direct reduction iron-making processes up to now. It has the advantage that ore fines can be directly charged to the process without prior treatment while its disadvantages are particle agglomeration and high gas/solid ratio[3]. To avoid these advantages, a new reactor, multilayer moving-fluidized bed reactor has been developed for carrying out the gaseous reduction. Hydrodynamic behaviors of gas and fines in the reactor were studied and the results were satisfying[4]. However, due to its unique structure of the multilayer moving-fluidized bed and unique gas-solid flow pattern, models of multiphase flow as IPSA, DPM and Eulerian Model could not give a satisfying solution. The current paper is developed a new CFD model and a new solution approach for simulation of the reactive gas-solid flow in the multilayer moving-fluidized bed for its optimization, design improvement and future scale-up."

"Ferrous and non-ferrous metals industries are source of both direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Metal industry accounted for 29.7% of the total GHG emitted from the Indian industry sector in 2007. Aluminum is second largest contributor after steel. Indian Aluminum industry has been growing and is adopting several effective measures for better efficiencies through process change and waste utilization. Improvement in the energy efficiency can form the basis of monitoring reduction in emissions. Under the National Action Plan on Climate Change 2008, National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE) aims to upscale the efforts to unlock the market for energy efficiency improvement on a public private partnership (PPP) basis. For a transition to low carbon economy industry is undertaking voluntary measures through scientific and technological innovations both in upstream and downstream sectors. In this paper an attempt is made to overview recent developments in Indian Aluminum industry as well as summarize scientific & technological challenges and prospects.IntroductionAluminum plays a vital role in industrial development. It is a substitute for different type of materials ranging from wood to copper and steel. The aluminum industry has high energy consumption and high contribution to greenhouse gases from carbon dioxide and perfluorocarbons (PFCs) emissions. It is estimated that CO2 equivalent burden of aluminum industry is about 1% of total anthropogenic emissions. The anticipated world growth rate is 3.5% for aluminum demand. Through measures to reduce both direct and indirect CO2 emissions, electricity consumption was reduced from 25 kWh / kg of Aluminum in 1998 to 15 kWh / kg of Aluminum produced in 2008. It is targeted to further reduce it to 10.8 kWh. Aluminum industry is also responsible to about 60% of all PFC emissions. The PFC emissions are harmful to environment, accumulate in surrounding vegetation and contaminate. Efforts to reduce PFC emissions from aluminum industry started early and reduced to 0.5-1 kg / tonne in 1990 [1] from 12-15 kg / tonne in 1940. Since 1990s to 2000 it further reduced to 0.2 -0.4 kg / tonne as seen in Fig. 1. The Global Aluminum Sustainable Development Initiative (GADSI), targets perfluorocarbon (PFC) specific emissions reduction of 80% for 2010 relative to 1990."

With the world’s growing demand for metals, seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) deposits are now seen as a possible mineral resource that could contributes to secure metal supply for human needs. SMS deposits are characterized by high concentrations of base metals and at some place high contents of precious and rare metals. Since 1977 and the discovery of the first high temperature (HT) hydrothermal vent and its sulfide mineralization and high biodiversity, more than 300 sites are known today. If the exploration strategy for detection of active hydrothermal sites is now robust, their associated mineralization will not (and must not) constitute a potential target for deep-sea mining due to environmental concerns and technical limitations. Recent studies on SMS deposits are rather focused on extinct and buried mineralized sites characterized by a lower biomass. Several geophysical techniques to explore and detect extinct SMS (eSMS) and buried SMS (bSMS) have been developed (e.g. Kawada and Kasaya, 2017; Szitkar et al., 2017, 2014) using different approaches (e.g. regional or local scale; ship-based or using underwater vehicles) with several degrees of success or limitation. Here we present results from acoustic surveys performed on the TAG hydrothermal district during the BICOSE (2014) and LEVE-SMF (2016) cruises and direct observation provided by HOV (Nautile) dives carried out during HERMINE cruise (2017). Acoustic data were acquired using two different multibeam echosounders (MBES): the hull-mounted Kongsberg EM122 (12 kHz, R/V L’Atalante) and the ROV-mounted RESON SeaBat 7125 (400 kHz, ROV Victor) (Figure 1). After processing, acoustic seafloor backscatter data from both MBES provides complementary qualitative results in relation to the seafloor composition. The analysis of the seafloor backscatter data obtained by near-seafloor surveys with the high-resolution 400 kHz MBES shows a clear relationship between low backscatter strength values and areas covered with pelagic and hydrothermal sediments whereas high backscatter strength values are associated to pillow lavas and basaltic scree. Intermediate backscatter strength values are rather related to old and younger eSMS as well as to mineralization on TAG active mound.

"Over the last ten years, several developments have been undertaken to conceive a machine capable of carrying out simultaneously all the mining tasks in hard rock deposits: cutting, mucking, hauling, ground support and dust control.The main advantages of continuous mining over conventional drill and blast is the elimination of the cyclical nature of the actual methods. Other advantages sought are improved stability of mine openings, higher productivity, lower costs, and a cleaner and safer mining environment. Noranda has con-tributed to these developments in a major way. As a member of HDRK, Noranda participated in the development of two mechanical continuous mining machines; the TM60 and the Wirth. Noranda also undertook a development of its own based on the utilization of electricity to break rock. This technology is called plasma blasting (PBT). The concept of plasma blasting is illustrated in Figure 1.When the operating voltage is reached (18kV), the energy is released through a high current switch (500k A) into a coaxial powercable. It is then delivered to the tip of an electrode inserted into a drill hole which is filled with an electrolyte (water). When the energy reaches the electrolyte, it is instantaneously transformed into a high temperature, high pres-sure plasma that produces a shock wave capable of breaking rock(1).After initial testing of the plasma blasting technology in the lab and in the feld, two experimental platforms were constructed. The first one, a test bench, was erected at the Noranda Technology Centre in Pointe Claire, Quebec.(2)The second one is a rock breaker prototype based on a standard diesel-powered carrier (Fig. 2). Each platform was equipped with a 300 kJ pulsed-power module.In 1993, the rock breaker prototype was used for an extensive series of tests in the field. During that campaign, over 700 oversized boulders were blasted. The results of the tests demonstrated that more durable components for PBT were needed. The test bench was then used to successfully develop and test long-lasting components (probe, switch, cable, connector) that can be adapted to industrial platforms leading to the commercialization of the technology."

"Single phase rubidium jarosite was synthesized by precipitation from aqueous solution. X-ray diffraction and SEM-EDS analyses showed that the synthetic rubidium jarosite formed in subspherical particles with an average particle size of about 35 µm. The chemical analysis showed an approximate composition of Rbo9432Fe3(SO4)2 1245(OH)6. The decomposition behaviour of the jarosite in terms of solution pH was thermodynamically modeled using FACTSage by constructing the potential-pH diagram at 298.15 K. The E-pH diagram showed that the decomposition of jarosite leads to goethite (FeOOH) together with Rb+ and SO42- ions. The experimental decomposition of the Rb-jarosite was carried out in alkaline solutions with five different Ca(OH)2 concentrations. The decomposition process showed an ""induction period"" followed y a progressive conversion period where the Rb+ and SO42- ions formed in the aqueous solution. In contrast, calcium was incorporated in the solid residue and iron was transformed into amorphous ferrihydrite. The kinetic analysis showed that this process can be represented by the unreacted-core chemically controlled model. The reaction order with respect to Ca(OH)2 is 0.4342 and the calculated activation energy is 98.70 kJ mol-1. IntroductionJarosite type compounds are hydrous sulfate minerals containing alkalis and ferric ions, MFe3(SO4)2(OH)6, where M can be H3O+· Na+, K+, Rb+, Ag+, NH4 +, Tl+, ½ Pb2+ or ½ Hg2+. Jarosite-type compounds were formed by the natural ""in situ"" oxidation of pyritic ores leading to the replacement of the original iron sulfides and iron oxides (Dutrizac and Kaiman) [1]. The great interest in jarosites is due to its ability to eliminate or diminish the iron concentration of the acid leach solutions produced in the hydrometallurgical zinc process, with relatively low losses of divalent metals such as Zn2+, Cd2+, Cu2+ or Co . However, the losses of the metal values demand a careful study of the conditions under which the jarosite compounds are formed together with their chemical properties."

Underground coal mines have several dangers, one the most hazardous of which is the possibility of an explosion caused by the ignition of methane gas. To reduce ventilation costs, coal mines have the option to close off abandoned areas that are no longer active with structural seals to keep an explosion from propagating into working areas of the mine. These seals must be designed to withstand different pressure levels based on the potential of the atmosphere behind the seal to become explosive, either 50 psi (345 kPa) for inert atmospheres, 120 psi (827 kPa) for non-inert, and over 120 psi (827 kPa) for special cases. Though seals have been designed to resist the overpressure, none have been evaluated for their resistance to the impact of heavy objects. Underground explosions produce high velocity gasses that, traveling through mine openings, may propel objects in the mine at a high velocity causing them to impact and damage the mine seals. Seals damaged in this manner may no longer hold the pressure they were originally rated for and may fail during subsequent explosions or leak explosive gasses into active workings. To test the effects of impact on mine seals, a projectile generator and two seals have been constructed. The projectile generator is a 12-inch (30.5 cm) inner diameter steel pipe with a 4-inch (10 cm) wall, is 8.5 feet (2.6 m) in length, and sealed on one end. Projectiles are propelled by a charge of black powder with a wooden wad and are held in place by foam sabots in the bore. This system, combined with the large bore, allows firing of many different potential projectiles that may be found in an underground mine at a high velocity into the seals. The velocity of each projectile is measured by an infrared chronometer which can later be used to determine its impact energy. Impact effects on the seals are measured using strain gauges, LIDAR scans before and after impact, high speed cameras, and visual inspection. The focus of this paper is on the projectile generator design and initial testing.

(9.5) The estimator which satisfies these properties is a minimum variance, linear and unbiased estimator, and is known as the kriging estimator. The corresponding error of estimation is the kriging error. This estimator is also known as the BLUE (for Best Linear Unbiased Estimator) estimator. This was named by Matheron in acknowledgement of the early work of Krige's in the optimization of the evaluation of the South African gold mines. THE present paper is concerned with typical temperature values experienced in lamp-filament measurements as made on regular factory and engineering products. It deals with the relations existing between temperature, efficiency, lamp size, and life of incandescent lamps, insofar as they affect the rating of the product and its use by the individual consumer. The temperatures measured lie in that range covered only by the general method of radiation pyrometry, as opposed to direct methods used under contact conditions. The range of temperatures ordinarily experienced extends from about 2125° K., for the now almost extinct carbon-filament lamp, to 3200° K. for the comparatively new tungsten-filament motion-picture lamp. Most of the more common sizes of tungsten lamps have temperatures ranging from 2500 to 3000° K. Because of the high temperatures involved and the relatively small area of the sources used, we are practically restricted to two methods of measurement, both of which depend on the light radiated front the filament. The first and more usual method is that of the Morse pyrometer, dependent on the variation in temperature of the amount of light of a given color range yielded by the filament. In this case, the measured temperature is that of a small part of the incandescent body, that is, the part which is focused on the comparison filament. The second method, known usually in this country as that of "color match" and in England as "color-identity" is based on the color of the total light yielded by the filament, the comparison being facilitated by the use of an ordinary photometer- head. A more definite idea of the temperatures involved in the case of filaments of various vacuum and gas-filled lamps, is given by Fig. 1. The size of the lamp, in watts, is plotted along the horizontal axis and the temperature of the filament is plotted along the vertical axis. The lamps concerned are regular product, rated for 1000 hr. life. The temperature values for the old 16-candlepower carbon lamp and the new motion-picture lamp are shown by the cross and circle respectively.

wben a displacement front encounters an isolated permeability heterogeneity, it will be perturbed. The details of this perturbation will depend on the beterogeneity size and shape, the Permeability contrast, and the mobility ratio. This paper deals with the displacement front behavior for one, simple, mathematically tractable model: a circular permeability discontinuity and unit mobility ratio. The progress of an initially planar front is shown for four permeability contrasts: k2/k1 = 0, 5/2, 2, m. The front distortion is more pronounced than streamline and isopotential distortion and it approaches a constant shape downstream from the discontinuity. INTRODUCTION The impact of reservoir heterogeneities on oil displacing processes depends upon the variation of the heterogeneous property (frequency distribution), its disposition (spatial distribution), and the inherent stability of the displacement mechanism.l The interplay of these factors plus the impracticability, if not impossibility, of describing a natural rock system in any detail makes exact displacement front movements difficult to determine. It is useful, however, to be able to qualitatively visualize what heterogeneities will do to a displacement front. In this respect certain simple models that can be treated analytically are of value. The following analysis will show the displacement front behavior for one such model. MODEL DESCRIPTION The flow field is two-dimensional and infinite in extent. The fluid flow is single phase, steady state and unidirectional at x, y = 2 m, or before insertion of the discontinuity. A circular permea- bility discontinuity is placed at the origin. Porosity and thickness are the same within and exterior to the heterogeneity. This is exactly the same model that was used by Greenkorn et al. to check analytically Streamlines as determined by Heie-Shaw flow models and finite difference computer techniques.2 FRONT POSITION CALCULATIONS The results of displacement front calculations are presented in Figs. 1 through 4 for four different permeability contrasts: k2/kl = O, %, 2, m. The times corresponding to the front locations are the Same for the 0 and cases! and for the 1/2 and 2 cases. The piloting and eventual large-scale operation of fixed-bed carbon columns for the recovery of gold from plant effluents is described. A fixed-bed carbon pilot plant comprising three adsorption columns was used for the recovery of gold from clarified plant effluent at the Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company (West Division). The effluent ,which contained 0,1 toO,S g/t of gold and less than 10 g/t of free cyanide, was adjusted to pH 8 prior to use. Daily acid treatment of the carbon circuit with 3 per cent hydrochloric acid was shown to have a most significant effect on increasing the gold adsorption. The acid treatment involved a plant downtime of only I to 2 minutes per day. High loadings of gold (up to 30 k g/t) and copper (up to 75 k g/t) were obtained on the leading column, while the gold recoveries averaged 98 per cent over 17 weeks of continuous operation. The subsequent elution of loaded carbon in a pilot elution column indicated the use of abnormally high amounts of the pretreatment reagent (caustic soda and cyanide) used in gold elution. This was attributed to the high loading of copper on the carbon. However, the elution of both the gold and the copper at 110°C with demineralized water as the eluant was satisfactory. In a similar large-scale operation, three fixed-bed carbon columns each containing 4,5 t of carbon were used to treat 80 to 120 t/h of plant effluent with a gold concentration of about 0,15 g/t. Gold loadings of 5 to 6 k g/t were obtained regularly, while the gold recovery averaged 97 per cent over a 12-month period. The capital cost of the plant was recovered in 2 to 3 months. The evidence presented strongly suggests that copper plays a significant role in the adsorption and elution of gold under the prescribed conditions, and in the subsequent precipitation of gold following acidification of the eluates. The formation of a highly insoluble gold-copper complex produced under acid conditions appears to explain many of the observations made in the investigation.

Clean quartz cannot be floated with a high molecular weight sulfonate as collector at any pH. Good flotation is achieved from pH 6 to 12 when Pb is added at low additions of sulfonate. The active species of lead responsible for flotation is shown to be Pb(OH), which in the presence of sulfonate forms precipitated lead-hydroxy-sulfonate, the apparent collector in these systems. The ratio of collector to metal ion addition is critical for flotation to be effected at a given value of pH. At low Pb++ additions, the constant, k, k = (hydroxyl activity)/(sulfonate addition)', must be equalled or exceeded for flotation to result. Similarly, at high additions of Pb ++, k1 = (hydroxyl activity)/(sulfonate addition) " must be exceeded. Previous work has shown that clean quartz cannot be floated at any pH with a high molecular weight sulfonate as collector.'" Flotation can be effected, however, when a polyvalent metal ion is added to the system in a pH region in which the metal ion is hydrolyzing to its first hydroxide complex. Although the basic phenomenon responsible for activation is apparently metal ion hydrolysis, the amount of collector added in relation to the amount of metal ion is critical. In fact, Schuhmann and Prakash,3 and Gaudin and Rizo-Patron4 have demonstrated that this ratio of collector addition to metal ion addition determines whether any flotation is possible at a particular value of pH. The object of this paper is to explain and quantify the relationship between collector and activator additions as a function of pH. For this work, Pb++ was selected as activator, and a high molecular weight sulfonate was chosen as collector. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND METHODS Sodium alkyl aryl sulfonate (mol wt 450) was used as collector. Reagent grade n-amyl alcohol was added as frother, and pH adjustments were made with KOH. Lead was added to the systems as the chloride salt. Conductivity water, made by passing distilled water through an ion exchange column, was used in the investigation. IN the course of the development of the phase equilibrium diagram for the system Zr-Cr,' the structure of an as-cast allov having the composition ZrCr2 was analyzed and established to be isomorphous with MgZn2 (C14, hexagonal lattice, 12 atoms per unit cell). In a recent paper on the same system, Hayes, Roberson, and Davies' report for the ZrCr2 phase an isomorphy with MgCu2 (C15, cubic lattice, 24 atoms per unit cell). It appeared that this conflict might be resolved by assuming a high and low temperature modification for ZrCr2. That this was the case with the phase TiCr2 has recently been demonstrated by Levinger." Specimens of ZrCr2 annealed at 1200°, 1100°, 994", 900°, 834", 800°, and 700°C, respectively, and subsequently quenched were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis. It was successfully demonstrated that a transition from the MgZn, structure at lower temperatures to the MgCu, structure did occur at some temperature between 900" and 994°C. Table I lists the observed structures at the various annealing temperatures. In Table II, a summary of line spacings and intensities is given for each of the allotropic modifications. The first six lines of the MgCu2 structures have been located in the table to illustrate the close similarity between the patterns. Lattice parameters of the two modifications were calculated by a least squares solution of equations for interplanar spacings for a series of high angle lines. The results are as follows: MgZn2 type - c = 8.262 kX, A = 5.079 kX. MgCu2 type — a = 7.195 kX. It is interesting to note that TiCr2 behaves in reverse fashion yn that the MgCu, structure is the low temperature modification and the MgZn2 structure is the high temperature modification. "For the cases tested (11 mills with 15 operating conditions), the Bond abrasion test steel media wear rate prediction gives an overall error of 73% and a standard deviation of 192.5%. However, total steel media wear in a given mill (ball or SAG) grinding process is a product of three recognised wear mechanisms -- impact, abrasion, and corrosion. A total media wear model can be defined on the assumption that the effect of each wear mechanism can be independently determined which allows for a total media wear model to be defined as the summation of the wear result of each mechanism (eqn. 1). It is assumed that impact and abrasive media wear is a function of the energy dissipated in impact and abrasion as estimated by a DEM charge motion simulation. Corrosive media wear is assumed to be a function of the media surface area present in a mill.The 3 initial tests developed (steel abrasion wheel, corrosion batch mill, impact chamber) coupled with the impact and abrasion energy spectra from a DEM charge motion simulation produced total steel wear rate results for the same cases as the Bond abrasion test giving an overall error of 0% and a standard deviation of 66.1%. However, if one were to consider the general observation that wear is proportional to energy and maintain the assumption that corrosion is proportional to media surface area then one would realize that the total media wear eqn. (1) can be reduced to eqn. (2). As this is a linear equation and one has, for the same mill, media wear and operating data for three different operating cases, one obtains three equations with three unknowns. This defines a simple matrix manipulation to determine the constants k1, k2 and k3. From the previous data set, we had 6 identical mills grinding the same ore but having different worn liner profiles and charge volume which provided the opportunity to average out the ki values over 20 combinations of 3 cases. With the determined ki values, it was possible to determine a second estimate of the contributions of impact, abrasion and corrosion to total media wear giving an overall error of 0% and a standard deviation of 56%."

THE indexing of a field-ion micrograph is in many cases similar to the indexing of the poles of a stereo-graphic projection.* If one has a standard projection as a guide, the task of indexing is relatively simple. In this way, field-ion micrographs of bcc and fcc wires have been oriented from projections available in most any text on X-ray diffraction. These books always illustrate the projections for the bcc and fcc structures and even for a particular hcp structure. There is no "standard" hcp projection because the angles between planes depend on the c/o ratio of the unit cell. In order to index field-ion micrographs of hcp metals, one must compute the angles between various planes—a rather laborious task. In recent work,, we have had to identify the structure and index the orientation of field-ion micrographs of the compounds WC and W,C. To overcome the problem of computing angles by hand or calculator, a program was written in Fortran lV for use on the IBM 360, Model 50 which will compute all angles between planeswith indices (hlklll) and (17,k,l2) in the range from (447) to (444) for any given c/o ratio. The program, which is more specific than that of Camp and clum, was so written as to take advantage of the multiplicity of the hexagonal system, and, for the limits defined above, only 26,649 values out of a possible 265,721 values had to be computed. This is a 90 pct saving in time (and cost) and was accomplished in the following way. Because the lattice parameters of the hexagonal crystal system are defined such that: a = b * c [1] the I index does not enter into the multiplicity (i.e., it cannot be transposed with the h or k indices), and all possible values of h and I, from 4 to 4 must be used—a total of eighty-one combinations. The index h2 varies the most—it must assume values from - Ill,: to 3Ihl. The indices kl and k2 are always equal and vary
