Cononish is a steep, narrow NE-SW trending vein system that was emplaced into late Proterozoic metasediments. It shows brittle style deformation and postdates metamorphism and associated Caledonian foliations. The ore shoots plunge 45¦SW, have a 40 to 80?m intersection with the existing underground development and extend between 40 and 260?m down plunge. Small-scale sulfide-bearing domains within the vein carry the highest gold grades. They collectively define the ore shoots, where one or two and rarely three of the domains are present at an individual site in the vein. Gold occurs as electrum, with minor native gold. Silver occurs additionally as tellurides and native metal. The gold/electrum is fine-grained, generally <100?¦m in size and locally clusters. Visible gold up to 2000?¦m in size is rare. Gold and silver are generally spatially associated with sulfides in quartz. The main sulfide is pyrite, but galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur also. Electrum and gold occur with galena in pyrite-hosted fractures. Gold is also associated with the contacts between galena and pyrite grains. Discontinuity of individual domains, variation in domain thickness and internal heterogeneity results in short scale variation in grade across the structure. Responsible management of cyanide solutions and tailings on gold processing plants worldwide is an important aspect to these operations and is regulated via guidelines provided by the International Cyanide Management Code, an industry initiative designed to minimise cyanide risk to operators and the environment. Here we demonstrate the unprecedented causal relationships surrounding the saline (>14 000 mg/L total dissolved solids - TDS) and hypersaline (>50 000 mg/L TDS) cyanide solutions in gold plant tailings in the Central Goldfields of Western Australia, resulting in zero wildlife mortalities on three sites over the study period of almost one year. Wildlife interaction and ingestion is significantly lower than that experienced at other gold mine sites, with more rapid degradation of weak-acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide within the tailings storage facility (TSF). A rigorous chemical sampling using a novel æminimal accessÆ robotic sampler device and wildlife observation exercise was carried out at two hypersaline mine sites: Barrick Kanowna Belle (BKB) and Gold Fields St Ives (GSI) and one saline site, Barrick Granny Smith (BGS). The data was compared with available reported chemical sampling and wildlife observation data from a previously operational fresh water site (<2000 mg/L TDS) that had experienced wildlife mortalities, Case Study D (CSD). The comprehensive body of work, along with cyanide degradation test work carried out in the laboratory, was analysed via hypothesis development and testing, causation analysis and dynamic chemical modelling. The non-mortality effect on these sites appears to hold over a further four years of routine wildlife and cyanide monitoring by site personnel. Too often in mine planning, maximising revenue-generating material takes precedence over minimising costs. The ability to target both revenue and cost optimisation enables mine plans to fulfil corporate objectives of targeting maximal project net present value (NPV). The state of current mining costs and increasing government regulations in Australia are forcing many mine planners to pay closer attention to cost minimisation. Dumping waste material, which ultimately forms waste landforms, represents a large cost to mining operations. A general mine, with a waste to ore strip ration of 6:1, allocates approximately 32 per cent of total mining costs to waste haulage alone (Gregory, 2003).Most scheduling packages do not dynamically build economic or minimal cost dumps as part of the scheduling process. In most cases, waste dumps are built after a mining schedule has been defined. Automated software is now available which dynamically schedules the pit and waste dumps together. The overall shape of the waste dump is therefore dictated by minimum cost or minimum haulage hours.The purpose of this paper is to compare dynamic pit and waste schedules to traditional methods which apply haulage estimations after defining the mining schedule. This paper includes a case study on the large open pit operation at Tropicana Gold Mine, a joint venture between AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd (70 per cent) and Independence Group NL (30 per cent). The operation will focus on mining three large open pits over a 13-year mining life. A total of 397 Mt of waste is mined and directed to multiple destinations including waste dumps, the run-of-mine (ROM) pad and tailings storage facility (TSF) perimeter.Due to these complexities, management of the haulage fleet, especially during the critical period of operation readiness and start-up, is essential. The Eleonore property (James Bay district of Northern QuTbec), owned by Goldcorp, hosts gold within stockworks of quartz-tourmaline-arsenopyrite veins and veinlets contained within microcline (potassic alteration) and brown tourmaline replacement zones. The preliminary investigation to recover gold from drill core samples showed that flotation followed by ultra-fine grinding and cyanidation is the preferred option. Ultra-fine grinding is used to liberate gold finely disseminated in sulfides. The flotation concentrate used in the investigation had a P80 of 11 ¦ and contained 75.5 g/t Au, 5.0 g/t Ag, 10.3 per cent S, 0.07 per cent Cu and traces of antimony (0.03 per cent). The mineralogical characterisation showed the presence of 65 per cent gangue minerals, 23 per cent pyrrhotite (hexagonal), 9.6 per cent arsenopyrite, 2.2 per cent pyrite and 0.08 per cent chalcopyrite with trace amounts of galena (0.05 per cent) and sphalerite (0.03 per cent). Gold was in the form of native gold and electrum. A straight cyanidation conducted at pH 11.0, DO of 3 - 5 ppm, 2000 ppm NaCN, 20¦C and for 72 hours extracted 97.0 per cent Au and consumed 31.5 kg/t NaCN. The equilibrium was reached within 24 hours. Increasing the dissolved oxygen to 16 ppm reduced the consumption of cyanide to 22.0 kg/t with 96.7 per cent Au extraction. A 16-hour pretreatment with 2.0 kg/t lead nitrate, followed by a 24-hour cyanidation reduced the cyanide consumption to 6.0 kg/t with a gold extraction of 97.5 per cent. Increasing the lead nitrate addition to 6.0 kg/t reduced the cyanide consumption to 1.2 kg/t by passivating the surface of pyrrhotite. The gold extraction remained at 97.0 per cent. It was possible to decrease the concentration of cyanide to 800 ppm NaCN without compromising gold extraction. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.2 kg/t NaCN. The passivation of gold grains was an issue when the cyanide concentration was decreased to 550 ppm NaCN. The gold extraction decreased to 92.2 per cent. The average lime addition for all the tests was 7.4 kg/t and the average silver extraction was 80 per cent. Efficient cyanidation of an ultra-fine sulfide concentrate with only 800 ppm NaCN represents an advance in leaching of ultra-fine sulfide concentrates. This study addresses a widespread problem confronting the mining industry: the deleterious effect of clay minerals in flotation. This problem is seemingly exacerbated by the presence of iron contamination from grinding media. The interaction of clay minerals and grinding media in copper and gold flotation was investigated in this study. A low-clay ore and a high-clay ore were obtained from Telfer to represent different contents of clay minerals, while stainless steel and mild steel grinding rods were used to produce different grinding chemistry, in particular, iron contamination. Flotation tests on an unsized and sized basis were conducted to reveal how clay minerals and grinding media affect copper and gold flotation. Iron contamination and the oxidation of copper minerals were quantified by ethylene diamine-tetra acetic acid (EDTA) extraction. It is interesting to find that both clay minerals and iron contamination depressed the flotation primarily in fine particles smaller than 33 ¦m, and clay minerals played a dominant role. Although flotation of coarser particles greater than 33 ¦m was less affected by clay minerals and iron contamination, coarser grinding to increase P80 was not an effective way to improve copper and gold flotation for the high-clay ore. "Roasting of sulfide concentrates and refractory ores is an important process step in the production of metals and chemicals. Sulfides of iron, zinc, copper and other metals are oxidised with air between 600 and 1000¦C into metal oxides or sulfates and gaseous sulfur dioxide. Roasting of gold concentrates and ores is a typical processing step used to produce a porous calcine suitable for cyanide leaching. During roasting, elements posing problems are removed through: oxidation (carbon, sulfur, arsenic and antimony) or volatilisation (mercury, chlorides and tellurides, as well as arsenic and antimony).This paper focuses on the environmental aspect of roasting using fluidised bed technology. The approach is to show that roasting is an attractive solution for refractory ore pretreatment since, on the one hand, it is an efficient technique yielding high gold recovery rates, while on the other it is able to comply with current stringent international environmental regulations. In that respect, roasting is compared to alternative processes, ie pressure oxidation (POX), bio-oxidation (BIOX) and ultra-fine grinding (UFG). Roaster high gold recovery rates are ensured through roasting-leaching test work, which allows the derivation of respective roasting parameters that are easily achieved in an industrial plant. On the other hand, key elements of the roasting process are analysed, which make it an efficient and sustainable technology, ie the possibility for energy recovery, the removal of off-gas impurities during the different gas cleaning steps (handling of arsenic, mercury emissions and further hazardous dust and gas emissions) and the treatment of the SO2-gas in order to produce sulfuric acid, and finally the treatment of the effluent produced. Characterisation of hydrothermal gold systems across multiple scales is increasingly important for our understanding of ore deposit genesis and for targeting new mineralisation. Published work on multiscale mineral system exploration focuses either on applying a single technique across scales or on incorporating a series of techniques across a limited scale range. Typically, these studiesÆ spatial scales vary from crustal to deposit-scale and have successfully linked the distribution and shape of major orebodies to fault systems or varying lithostratigraphy. But, is this scale small enough to answer fundamental questions about the relative timing, processes interactions and mechanisms involved in the formation of ore deposits? We illustrate the potential of a deposit to microscale study, using the Plutonic Gold Mine in Western Australia as an example, to better understand hydrothermal gold systems. High-nugget gold orebodies are difficult to model in 3D because samples from diamond drill core are generally too small to provide reliable estimates of the gold content of the larger body of rock, and therefore interpolation of gold assay values between drill holes is also unreliable. As a result, gold resources are generally underestimated in areas of high nugget. In practice, proxies for gold mineralisation, such as presence of alteration, specific structures or high vein density, have been used by geologists to predict rocks which are favourable for mineralisation. However, there has been no automated method for combining the predictive capabilities of several proxies, except by human judgement.We have been developing a method to combine several different types of geological features or geochemical analyses into a single measure using conditional probability. Conditional probability provides a meaningful numerical measure for the favourability of rocks for containing high-grade gold mineralisation. This measure can be interpolated in the exploration space, providing a sound basis for a 3D model of the orebody. The Mount Wright gold deposit is located near the town of Ravenswood, ~90 km south of Townsville, in north Queensland. The deposit has been mined by underground methods since 2006. It produced approximately 138 koz Au in the 2011 - 2012 financial year and has a total endowment of approximately 1 Moz Au. To facilitate near mine exploration, a re-logging campaign of 600+ diamond and RC drill holes was recently conducted, resulting in a revised three-dimensional (3D) geological model and improved understanding of the ore controls and the mineralised system. The deposit is within a Permo-Carboniferous breccia complex approximately 350 m diameter and more than 1200 m deep. It consists of early peripheral granite-rich breccia, polymict breccia, a rhyolite spine and a late tuffisite (fine-grained milled breccia) pipe. The rhyolite spine is approximately 60 m + 250 m + at least 1200 m deep and is zoned with massive, flow-banded and breccia phases that are in part gradational with the other breccias. There is extensive sericitic alteration centred on the tuffisite and rhyolite units and fading out into the shallower and peripheral polymict and granite-rich breccias. There is also a broad pattern of metal zoning with elevated Pb-Zn ¦ Ag in the upper 400 m, Au-Cu-Bi below 400 m fading out below ~850 m, and a poorly defined deep Mo-W-Te-Sb anomaly. The majority of the Au ore is between 400 and 850 m below the surface in the rhyolite spine. Below this, Au mineralisation is less coherent, and more localised in the margins of the rhyolite and in the adjacent tuffisite. The developing model is that the ore is not confined to or necessarily directly genetically related to the rhyolite spine, but is driven by other phases of intrusion that also generated the tuffisite pipe. New Zealand has an established history of gold production beginning with the gold rushes of the 19th century in the Coromandel, Nelson/Marlborough, West Coast and Otago regions. Despite this, the number of significant modern hard rock gold operations has been limited in recent years due to a lack of sustained exploration capital and not limited geological prospectivity.The New Zealand Government is actively encouraging explorers to invest in New Zealand through a series of targeted promotional visits, more importantly through the acquisition of precompetitive regional geophysical data. Data collection has been completed over the prospective Northland epithermal district and a large portion of the South IslandÆs west coast that is prospective for both orogenic gold and intrusive related gold.Analysis of new data has been an important component in aiding the generation of exploration targets from prospectivity modelling. Determining the prospectivity of an area involves reviewing all the available data and analysing it with respect to the most up-to-date mineral system model for the mineralisation style of interest. Using the weights of evidence modelling approach, the most prospective areas for epithermal gold-silver, orogenic gold and intrusion-related gold have been identified. The key exploration parameters relevant to each mineral system are first represented spatially and then statistically combined into a single prospectivity map. New potentially economic deposits could be found by focusing exploration on targets identified from these models. "Conventional wisdom is that gold not assayable is not recoverable or does not exist. There has been no formal study on the possibility that gold assays using advanced spectroscopy such as mass spectrometry and neutron activation could grossly underestimate the gold recoverable by proprietary extraction techniques. Such gold is not considered here to be æinvisibleÆ to detection but rather æabnormalÆ or ædistortedÆ at atomic level. Large-scale extraction of gold from æabnormalÆ ores has not been demonstrated, hence this emerging field still lacks credibility and acceptance. For fear of harming their reputation, few academic researchers or companies are expected to venture into this field until it is well proven. This paper aims to create awareness amongst metallurgists of the potential of æabnormalÆ gold ores by reviewing unconventional observations, the pseudoscience mainly available in non-peer reviewed web sites, and hypotheses for the recovery of ænon-assayableÆ gold, including: the occurrence of high levels of nano-sized gold in clays detectable by high-precision analytical instruments, which represents æinvisibleÆ gold accounts of ambient transmutation of elements, mainly using thermal methods orbitally rearranged monoatomic elements (ORMEs), which are virtually undetectable by conventional means, and their conversion to normal metals the possibility of a æhigh spinÆ state of transition metals the formation of microclusters altering the chemical behaviour of gold and the possibility of clustering with other elements. It is suggested here that gold in ores displays a range of clustering, from ænormalÆ gold amenable to conventional extraction to the ORME state. The concepts of æintermolecular waterÆ in forming complex salts locking up precious metals, electro-dissolution in strong acids, and electrowinning at both the anode and cathode are discussed as a means of treating æabnormalÆ gold ores. The Tropicana deposit was discovered in 2005 after AngloGold Ashanti followed up an unexplained gold-in-soil anomaly. Discovered in a remote, barely-explored area of Western Australia not previously thought prospective for gold, Tropicana is the most significant gold find in Australia for more than a decade. The new, large scale open pit gold mining operation will produce an annual production of around 330 000 to 400 000 oz over a ten year mine life mining around 60 Mt/a.Process plant construction started in early 2012 and is due to finish in the December 2013 quarter. The mining contract was awarded to Macmahon Holdings (Macmahon) and mining commenced in July 2012 using conventional drill and blast, truck and excavator open cut methods.As a construction and start-up project in a greenfields location, the establishment of mining activities at Tropicana Gold Mine (TGM) involves the implementation of technical and operational systems, including the mining contract. Some of these systems and likely challenges were identified during earlier studies, while others were not foreseen until they were encountered. Alternatively, the time frames around implementation change depending on the changing knowledge of the project and industry environment. These systems include those common to the industry and those specific to the operation and location.This paper examines the implementation and development of a number of the systems specific to the establishment of mining operations, including the history, process and some outcomes. Although expected to be discrete systems to implement, they become interdependent. Since 2001, the AMIRA P420 gold processing technology project series has been studying the recovery of gold using gravity devices, with particular emphasis on the centrifugal units, Knelson and Falcon concentrators. Gold in sulfide ores is associated predominantly with sulfide minerals and occurs as both microscopic and submicroscopic particles. In non-refractory sulfide ores, gold occurs mainly as coarse- and medium-grained particles. Minute inclusions and submicroscopic gold usually account for a minor portion. In contrast, gold in refractory sulfide ores occurs mainly as minute particles and submicroscopic gold, and microscopic gold usually accounts for an insignificant portion. In gold ores containing carbonaceous material, the preg-robbing nature of carbonaceous material may impose challenges on gold extraction and cause gold losses. To extract gold from refractory sulfide ores, the ore needs to be finely ground and preoxidation is often required. Sulfide host minerals must first be oxidised to create a porous structure through which the cyanide leach solution can penetrate to reach the colloidal gold particles. The oxidation is traditionally achieved by roasting, autoclaving or bacterial oxidation. In carbonaceous sulfide ores exhibiting a preg-robbing nature, the carbonaceous material needs to be treated by roasting, autoclaving or other means to minimise the preg-robbing effect. As a predictive and troubleshooting tool, the gold deportment study plays an important role in gold metallurgy. It determines the deportment of gold in an ore or mill product and identifies the mineralogical issues that may affect or may have affected gold extraction. It is well known that clays affect the flotation performance, and many of the refractory gold ores around the world contain clay minerals. Therefore, an ore sample from the Carlin Trend was selected for this study as these ores contain large quantities of clays. The presence of clay minerals in an ore makes it susceptible to a range of variables, such as the solution chemistry determined by pH and the chemistry of the rheology modifiers. The viscosity of the ore slurry was measured as a function of solid concentration and particle size distribution, in addition to using different rheology modifiers and pH regulators. The results were correlated with the ore flotation performance. Randgold ResourcesÆ MorilaÆs gold leach plant is subjected to uncommon æoxygen stressesÆ. Feed ores exhibit very high oxygen demands, primarily caused by iron sulfides. In addition, ore oxygen demand varies significantly over time, as well as between different feed ore sources. The inability of the Morila gold leach plantÆs oxygenation system to cope with these high and fluctuating oxygen stresses manifested itself in variable gold residue grades, and cyanide consumption rates.Management launched a Morila oxygen system review project during September 2009, with the objective of auditing the performance of the then current oxygenation system, against required performance parameters as calculated from oxygen demands of the various feed ore types and targeted dissolved oxygen levels in the leach train.This paper describes the systematic changes made since 2009 to the Morila oxygen system in four main areas: O2-supply plant, O2-volumes, O2-controls and oxygenation equipment. Data are provided on corresponding improvements in leach plant performance. The role of biological agents in the gold mining industry is currently limited to the use of microorganisms in bioleaching and bioremediation. However, there is a variety of possibilities in which biotechnology could aid the mining industry in the future. In this article we discuss the potential for the development of these novel biotechnologies and the role they can play in the exploration for new gold deposits, the processing of ores and the post-mining remediation of sites. The development of these biotechnologies has been enabled by rapid advances in our molecular-level understanding of the role microorganisms play in the solubilisation, dispersion and precipitation of gold. An understanding of the distribution of microbial species in soils overlying mineralisation can be utilised to develop bioindicator systems that assist with gold exploration. An in-depth knowledge of how microorganisms interact with gold complexes is being used to develop in-field biosensors, supporting exploration. Processing technologies may be improved based on advances in our understanding of the interactions between microorganisms, ore minerals, cyanide and gold. For instance, cyanide-producing microorganisms are being investigated for use in in situ leaching of gold. In turn, the use of cyanide-utilising microorganisms for the degradation of cyanide is being explored. The shift of mining activities to increasingly more diverse locations places the industry in conflict with local residents over land use and water access. In Perú, there have been significant rises in mining community conflicts with few long term resolutions being apparent. This paper examines the role of culture in these conflicts and suggests that progress maybe able to be made should deliberative engagement occur. Also, that mining conflicts are inevitable and that Peru’s cultural heritage, while contributing to the distance between parties is also the basis from which to start of a process of resolution, should both sides wish to gain the appropriate skills for a more deliberative approach.

Durante la explotación de los niveles inferiores en la mina Yauliyacu, se generaron dudas sobre la ubicación de las concentraciones de esfuerzos y sus relaciones con los estallidos de roca. En este sentido, se instala un sistema microsísmico donde mediante el análisis de la microsismicidad se elaboró los estándares que permitieron reducir los incidentes por estallidos de roca presente, así como la frecuencia, magnitud y daños a las personas, y equipo e infraestructura de mina, debido a la energía liberada por los eventos microsísmicos. Por ello, el presente trabajo señala los beneficios del uso del sistema de análisis de microsismicidad como la actualización contínua de la zonificación minera de acuerdo a la concentración de esfuerzos, procediendo al reforzamiento del sostenimiento como medida de prevención.
