The search for an efficient and economic machine to excavate hard rock continues. Development of the Robbins Mobile Miner commenced in 1983 with the formation of a joint venture between Mount Isa Mines Limited and The Robbins Company. Construction of the machine ensued and preliminary trials to verify the cutting action were undertaken in the USA prior to transportation to and assembly at Mount I-sa where mining commenced in September 1984. Initially, the machine was used to develop the S60 Decline which serves as a combined access and conveyor drive for the Southern 1100 Orebody Ore Handling System.

11.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter outlines some of the selection and design considerations for leach pads and liners. Leach pads and liners are generally chosen to provide the required or desired levels of low permeability and foundation conditions at minimum cost. The selection and design of a particular liner depends upon its anticipated use and performance, and what materials may be available. A leach pad is the firm base for a heap. When geomembrane liners are used, the pad is the firm, compacted foundation upon which the liner is placed. In the case of a clay liner, the clay liner is usually also the pad. It is important to consider the design of a pad or liner in terms of a system. The "leach pad system" consists of the prepared foundation, bedding layer (if used), liner (s), seepage collection or detection layer (if used), and cover layer. Foundation preparation is necessary to ensure a stable base for the rest of the leach pad system. A bedding layer is used to protect a liner from being punctured by large angular fragments in the foundation material. A seepage collection or detection layer, consisting of well-drained material and (sometimes) pipes draining to a collection sump, is included when a double liner is used. A cover layer on top of the liner can serve the following purposes (van Zyl and Strachan, 1986): • Preventing of ultraviolet light exposure to sensitive geomembranes; • Limiting evaporation from compacted clay liners and thereby eliminating cracking of such liners; • More efficient collecting of leachate; and • Protecting the liner from damage during heap construction. Economic evaluations of alternative liners for a project must include the overall system. For example, a geomembrane liner may require different foundation preparation and cover material selection and placement than a clay liner. Liners can be made of compacted clay onsite, amended soil, or geomembranes. In 1984 and 1985, as part of its critical and strategic minerals studies, the Bureau of Mines investigated lode and placer tin occurrences near Rocky Mountain (Lime Peak), in east-central Alaska. The lode occurrences consist of mineralogically complex, generally fault-controlled veins, and contain an average of approximately 0.05 pct Sn, as cassiterite. Beneficiation testing of two bulk samples of the vein material produced concentrates containing 65 and 59 pct of the total tin values at grades of 0.35 and 13.9 pct, respectively. Although as much as 30 million short tons (MMst) of mineralized rock containing up to 20 MMlb Sn may be present, the grade of these occurrences is too low to be considered economic at this time. Trace amounts of cassiterite were also identified in surface samples of glacial out-wash gravels collected along North Fork Preacher Creek, which partially drains the area of tin lode deposits near Lime Peak. Low tin grades in the samples do not account for the former erosion of a large volume of lode tin mineralization from near Lime Peak; higher tin grades may be present in gravels closer to bedrock.

AND INTRODUCTION The Lochiel coal deposit, a large Tertiary soft brown coal deposit in the mid north of South Australia, is currently being investigated by the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) as a potential source of fuel for a base load power station. Feasibility studies indicated that the proposed dragline method of overburden removal was viable but economically sensitive to both highwail and dump batter angles. The unusual properties of the unconsolidated overburden sediments and the groundwater regime posed a number of intimately related hydrogeological and geotechnical questions which were addressed before and during the excavation of a trial pit. All strata at Lochiel are of soil strength, and artesian aquifers occur above and below the coal. From the initial evaluation of the deposit a number of hydrogeological questions were defined. These related to the rate at which the pore pressure in the silts is reduced by dewatering, the extent of the reduction in pore pressure due to prestripping, and the feasibility of dewatering and depressurising carbonaceous silty sand sequences. The site of the trial pit was selected to answer these and other questions from the basis of a detailed geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical understanding. The trial pit dewatering system simulated a full scale mine dewatering system and included ten pumped wells, twenty drainage wells, and nearly 400 monitoring instruments. It operated from September 1986 to June 1987. The excavation was carried out between February and May 1987.

The advantages and disadvantages of using inclined boreholes in blasting has been under discussion for a long time. Some recognized disadvantages are that drilling costs, both operating and capital costs, are higher for inclined holes than for vertical ones, and that drilling accuracy is more difficult to maintain. People who have used angled holes in practice, on the other hand, have claimed that the quality of blast results was improved. In fact, their popularity has increased, especially in Australia.

Small mines exist because of a restricted deposit or a small market. With the right management at the present time the small mine can have lower total costs than larger mines. Charbon is an example of a small mine with a restricted deposit and a specialised product. The development which incorporates a unique rail loading facility and flexible coal preparation plant was achieved with a modest capital outlay and in record time. To remain competitive in future with large scale mines who seek increased production the small mine must achieve increased productivity through automation, higher speed equipment and a multiskilled workforce. Deregulation of the industry, scrapping the Coal Industry Tribunal and the Joint Coal Board would benefit small mines greatly. Management of a small operation also requires multiskills which need to be supported by outside help in the form of consultants and temporary staff. In the 21st century small mines will continue to provide a service to the market.

In the 1960s it was suggested that the volume of stope convergence, and hence the rockburst hazard, could be reduced by the emplacement of backfill. Recent advances have facilitated the placement of large quantities of backfill underground, and a reassessment of its potential benefits as part of a regional support strategy is now timely. In this paper the principal criteria of effectiveness of backfill are taken to be its impact on face energy release rate (ERR) and average pillar stress (APS) levels, and maximization of acceptable ore extraction ratios. The possible effects of backfill on excess shear stresses (thought to modulate large seismic events) are also briefly reviewed. Analytic solutions describing backfill properties and their impact on ERR and APS in certain idealized geometries are also presented, and compared with the results of an extensive suite of computer simulations, in which parameter sensitivities are explored. Results indicate that a regional support strategy is required at depths exceeding 2 km in order to maintain acceptable levels of ERR, and backfill ribs can on their own fulfil this role at depths less than 3,3 km. At greater depths use of stabilizing pillars becomes imperative, but here too supplementary backfill ribs can reduce ERR and APS levels and permit significant increases in ore extraction ratios.

The Canadian mining industry was in turmoil in the early 1980s. The post-war era based on reconstruction faded away after the high demands for minerals in the 1950s and 1960s. Also, the industry had the misconception that the demand growth would continue for ever but the rapid growth of resource industries in the third world in the 60s and 70s, resulted in worldwide production overcapacity. The Canadian mining industry eventually recognised the facts and took drastic action for cost control and innovation in technology. The cost control had an immediate effect on the survival of the industry but resulted in only limited incremental gains. The economic problems that the Canadian mining industry faced in the early 1980s can be viewed now as a blessing in disguise. It was realised that for the Canadian mining industry to survive in the 21st century further gains were possible only through innovative technology. This conclusion led to a flurry of activity to establish mechanisms and delivery systems for innovative technology in the mining industry. Despite the initial difficulties in accepting high technology in the mining industry, it is being used increasingly in mining operations and will make future mining operations unrecognizable to present day mining engineers. The concept of an underground mine without underground staff seems to be far fetched, but it is possible that mines of the 21st century will approach the concept of very few underground operating personnel.

Pulmonary inflammation is accompanied by increased microvascular permeability and leakage of plasma into alveolar spaces. Serum has been shown to affect superoxide (O2-) production from pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) in vitro, and in some cases serum has been shown to be necessary for stimulation of PAM. An electro-optical method was used to measure O2- production from single PAM by measuring the reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate (NBTH2) from videorecorded images of individual cells. PAM were stimulated by their initial attachment to culture dishes independent of serum. The addition of 2% serum to the culture medium increased NBTH2 production during attachment, whereas concentrations of 5 and 10% serum had no additional effect. In contrast, PAM incubated for 2 hrs could not be stimulated by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) or zymosan particles to produce O2- unless serum was present during the incubation and/or stimulation; however, NBTH production was similar in all cases of serum addition. Also2, serum alone did not stimulate adherent PAM indicating that serum is necessary but not sufficient for stimulation of attached. PAM. These results suggest that changes in microcirculatory permeability may have a pronounced effect on superoxide production by PAM and that serum may help regulate or condition these cells during inflammation of the lung. Thermal constants such as thermal con- ductivity and thermal diffusivity of rock and coefficient of heat transfer of airway wall are the most important characteristic values which decide accuracy of prediction calcula- tion. However, quality of rock is not homoge- neous and water content in rock varies with location and so, a method for in-situ measure- ment of thermal constants must be taken in. The method developed by us is to measure in- situ rock temperatures at two different depths from airway wall. It is simple and we found its accuracy is good enough in the engineering Sense.

A single four feet diameter cell, treating a Cu/Mo rougher concentrate, has been fully instrumented and linked to a Distributed Control System. This has enabled the writers to further understand the mechanics of operation of the cell, particularly that of the "TRANSITION ZONE". This is the volume between the feed port and the pulp-froth inter- face. The results have shown a need for the re-designing the control loops whereby the Transition Zone volume (or pulp level ) becomes the single most important control parameter to achieve the de- sired recovery. Air consumption, previously thought to have played this role, is now kept at precoalescence level s for maximum efficiency.

The paper describes the application of New Zealand's environmental impact assessment procedures to a proposed gold and silver mine in the North Island of New Zealand. The project is described and a summary is provided of the statutory permits or consents that are required prior to operation of the project. Emphasis is given to the requirement for environmental impact assessment and the preparation of a formal environmental impact report. The company's approach to impact assessment is described, with examples of how this assessment and the identification of management alternatives influenced the engineering design of the project. This paper was prepared as a contribution to a working session of the International Association of Impact Assessment VII Annual Conference, July 1988.

Projected cooling requirements for ERPM led to the first proposals for the large- scale use of ice for mine cooling in the early 1980's. Following successful research into ice conveying and ice melting a large ice plant was commissioned at Harmony in 1985 and a much larger 6000 ton per day plant is presently under construction at ERPM. A brief description of the mining project is given, followed by general descriptions of the surface ice plants and the ice conveying system, the systems for using the ice for mine cooling, and the control of the whole ice cooling System.

During the past few years, the international nickel industry has taken some important steps to respond to conditions of global production overcapacity, relatively flat demand and low prices. These include the implementation of major cost reduction programs by most producers, closure of some high cost operations and the establishment of the Nickel Development Institute. Consumption in the western world increased by about 7 per cent in 1987 compared to 1986, supplies were less than demand, inventories were low, and late in the year prices increased dramatically. By year-end 1987, most producers were operating at, or close to, their effective capacities. Nickel demand is expected to increase to the year 2000 at an annual rate of about 1.7 per cent, led by increasing usage in the stainless steel sector. If this rate of growth is realized, then there will be need for the effective capacity of the nickel industry to be increased. Producers in Canada have put considerable effort in the past few years into reducing costs - with impressive results. Mining costs, in particular, have been reduced dramatically. While production is still less than the peak years of the yearly 1970's, it has increased substantially from levels of the early 1980's. Over the next few years, production is expected to increase slowly. A key determinant of the level of production in the 1990's could be the effect that regulations on sulphur dioxide emissions have on limiting production.

In L969 Metallurgie Hoboken-Overpelt started an industrial plant for the separation of iron and zinc from a concentrated CoCL2 solution. Iron and zinc are extracted in column contactors by a solvent containing 12 vol % of tertiary amines in xylene. The extracted metals are stripped from the pregnant organic phase by precipitation with a NaOH solution at pH LL. In this paper an overview is given of the industrial process. In order to overcome some drawbacks of this process (low flash point of the diluent, reagent consumption, batchwise stripping) an alternative solvent extraction process has been examined. In this alternative process, iron and zinc are extracted with an or¬ganic phase containing 50 vol % of TBP in Escaid 110. The pregnant solvent is stripped with water in conventional mixer settlers. Despite the ability of this process to overcome most of the inconveniences due to the use of tertiary amines, it suffers from the poor stability of TBP in concentrated chloride solutions, resulting in unavoidable and inacceptable precipitation phenomena in the stripping section.

The quantitative evaluation of the performance of fill materials placed in gold mine stopes is achieved by (i) measurement of the in-situ load- displacement, or stress-strain, characteristics of the materials; (ii) an objective comparison between the observed fill performance and that predicted from suitable computer modelling techniques; and (iii) objectively comparing conditions in backfilled and conventional stopes. Considerable problems have been experienced with the development of sufficiently robust instrumentation which can be installed within filled pad- docks and give reliable information over a long period of time. However, at most mines where backfill performance is being monitored, it has been possible to correlate stress measurements within the filled paddocks with strain measurements adjacent to the paddocks. The resultant stress-strain curves agree relatively well with those determined in the laboratory. Measurements in the hangingwall strata of filled and unfilled stopes indicate that the placement of fill does reduce the amount of inelastic convergence due to bed separation. Moreover, in some stopes, the rate of convergence with respect to face advance does reduce to that of the theoretical elastic convergence. Quantification of changes in the conditions at the stope face due to placement of fill has proved difficult. Observations indicate that, provided the fill is placed close to the face (- 5 m), and adequate temporary face support is used, conditions in filled panels are superior. In addition, in filled panels the damage caused by a rockburst in the stope and, particularly, in gullies is generally much less than would be expected in an unfilled stope. To quantify these improvements, parameters such as stope height, face advance and the frequency of falls of ground are being monitored.

The sharp deterioration in Au~tralia'S ternn of trade in recent years and the accumulating national debt highlight the need for a restructuring of the economy which is highly dependent upon primary agricultural and mineral commodity exports (figure 1). Table I gives an indication of the value that can be added to raw material by mineral processing. Significantly higher value is added through downstream manufacturing. In 1987, the mining and rural sectors accounted for 47010 and 38010 respectively of total exports valued at $35,782 million (figure 2). The export contribution from minerals comprised $12,266 mil- lion from unprocessed ores and concentrates and $4,668 million from metals and processed minerals including some simple manufactures. Coal accounted for 450/s of total primary mineral exports. Iron ore and alumina are other important mineral exports, while gold and aluminium are major metal exports. (Figure 3) Australia's minerals are now traded in a much more competi- tive and oversupplied market in contrast to the 1960's and 1970's period which was characterised by increasing exports of largely unprocessed ores and concentrates. During this period the emphasis on technology development was focussed on reducing costs through increased production effi- ciencies in order to maintain competitiveness.

Previous models describing the aggregation of polymer-coated particles fail to take into account the fact that there are a limited number of sites onto which a polymer segment can adsorb, called "active" sites. Thus, the collision efficiency is a factor not only of the fractional surface coverage, but also of the number of active sites. In this study, a physical model of the flocculation system was devised in which the number of these sites could be varied, in order to study the effect on particle aggregation.

The Nabarlek Uranium Project located in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia was a small high-grade deposit which was the first uranium mine brought into operation following the extensive Commissioner Fox Inquiries into uranium mining during the late 1970s. The operation is almost complete and decommissioning plans have been prepared. This paper reviews all phases of the water management and tailings disposal for the project and compares results with design predictions.
