Roof falls, even of supported roof, still constitute a major hazard in underground mines. However, associated with any fall or instability is a pattern of roof movement. Therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Center, has been conducting research into the development of practical extensometer systems that can be used to measure this displacement and to determine if a roof fall may occur, thus increasing miner safety. For extensometers to be used in the detection of potential roof falls in coal mines, an understanding of the movement and displacement rates that will lead to roof failure is required. Because roof falls are unpredictable, it is often very difficult to obtain this information. Therefore, in a coal mine in the lower Kittanning seam in Pennsylvania, a room widening experiment was conducted to intentionally cause a roof fall while roof movement data was collected. In this experiment, two adjacent rooms 5.5 m (18 ft) wide supported with 1.5 m (5 ft) resin-grouted bolts and instrumented with extensometers were widened to 9 m (30 ft). In one of the rooms, 3.6 m (12 ft) cable bolts were installed as supplemental support. In the room with no additional support, a roof fall occurred 72 h after the room was widened. Much of the 3 cm (1.2 in) of movement in this room resulted from the instantaneous and transient response to mining with displacement rates up to 7.6 cm/d (3 in/d) being measured. This was followed by a steady state displacement phase with a rate of 0.43 cm/d (0.17 in/d). Just 12 h before the fall, movement deeper in the roof caused the rate to accelerate to 1.1 cm/d (0.44 in/d). The roof in the room with the supplemental cable support did not fall even though the total roof deformation was over 7.6 cm (3 in). Significant roof movements and strains in the cabled room were detected to a depth of 3 m (10 ft) while maximum cable loads were over 180 kN (40,000 lbf). Essentially, the roof was in postfailure with the cables maintaining the material, while roof stability was indicated by a steady state displacement rate of only 0.025 cm/d (0.01 in/d) at the end of the test.

Complicated processes of heat exchange and evaporation, leading to changes in the temperature and humidity of the ventilating air flow, take place during the driving of headings. In the case when virgin rock temperature is high, the increase in air temperature and humidity is significant. This causes a deterioration of climatic conditions in the headings. Procedures for predicting the changes in air temperature and humidity are discussed, together with appropriate calculations and computer programmes. Predicted results for example scenarios are used as a background for the selection of approaches and means to improve the climatic conditions in a dead-end heading using auxiliary ventilation.

The Miami In-situ mine of BHP Copper is located in Globe-Miami, Arizona. The mine leaches mineralized leach capping over a supergene enriched sulfide deposit, and has produced over 500 million lbs of copper during the last 50 years. The Miami unit has identified several opportunities to enhance and expand in-situ production. A computer block model consisting of strict geologic controls, mineralogy, and metallurgical data was developed to assist in the determination of the leachable copper resource. An understanding of the accessibility and solubility of the resource to leaching solutions and the integration of hydrogeologic and hydrometallurgical information was necessary for completion of this project.

The four most important parameters controlling the flow of as in coal are the gas content, permeability, diffusion coefficient and clear characteristics. Estimates of these and, more importantly, a good knowledge about the variations in their values over time are important for proper simulation of long-term gas production. This paper describes experimental techniques for the estimation of diffusion-coefficient and permeability values, along with their time dependency under simulated in situ conditions. It is shown that the permeability and diffusion-coefficient values are not constant, as they are usually assumed to be. There is a significant variation in their values, probably as a result of changes in the microstructures of coal associated with release and flow of gas. Finally, a technique to estimate clear parameter is presented.

Miners and explorers in New Zealand are expected to consult with stakeholders, keep out of core conservation areas, and operate a high standard of environmental management and rehabilitation. These requirements are not difficult to meet, but many of the industry's own actions have brought it to a low level of general public esteem in New Zealand. Reasons for this are discussed, drawing examples from the Maruia Society's experiences with the industry since the mid-1980s. The boundary between core conservation areas and other land is not easily drawn, and the Maruia Society has sought to work with the mining industry to promote legislation for net conservation benefit trade-offs. However this initiative was not successful. Today the industry, unlike most other major industry sectors in New Zealand, has no accord with the country's conservation movement.

"ABSTRACTCoal Mountain Operations is the newest of Fording Coal’s operations although it is the oldest in terms of its historical production. In October, 1994, Fording purchased the former Corbin Creek/Byron Creek Mine. The mine is located in southeastern British Columbia, approximately 150 air kilometers from Calgary, Alberta. It was first developed in 1905 and has gone through a variety of owners in its 90-year history.This paper will deal with the remobilization strategy and the mining plans for the operation which are being implemented to make this operation competitive in the world export coal market. IntroductionIn October 1994, following a due diligence process, Fording Coal Limited purchased Coal Mountain Operations from Corbin Creek Resources, an employee group which had previously owned the mine. The purchase awarded Fording Coal Limited with 100% of the assets, and control of all the coal leases at Coal Mountain.The mine is located in southeastern British Columbia, southeast of Sparwood at the hamlet of Corbin, (Fig. 1).Rehiring of laid-off employees started in November 1994, with mining activities also recommencing in November. The coal preparation plant was restarted in December with one shift, went to two shifts in January 1995, and had four-shift, full-time operation in April 1996."

INTRODUCTION One of the main problems in tunneling without the use of explosives lies in the development of tools which, at an economically acceptable level, are capable of continuous breakage of the rock, resulting in a fragmentation suitable for a smooth, uninterrupted transportation of the muck away from the tunnel face. Tools employed on tunneling machines have, so far, always been of the mechanical kind which break up the rock by a crushing and shearing action. Other methods of rock breaking are possible but, even if some of them have reached the laboratory testing stage, nearly all of them are still too "exotic" to be of any practical use in the immediate future. One must admit, however, that some highly interesting results are beginning to be reported from the USA on the use of high pressure water jets for the destruction of rock through erosion, a field pioneered in Europe(USSR and Great Britain). Mechanical breakage of the rock is effected by inducing stresses exceeding its compressive/shear strength, by loading it with a wedge of cone shaped tool, until cracks are formed and chips loosened. In order to allow the tools to act upon the rock face continuously, they are commonly shaped as rotating bodies, "roller bits" or "disc cutters", spinning freely and mounted on a revolving boring head of tunnel diameter. The thrust of the tools against the face is generally exerted in a direction which is parallel to the tunnel axis.

"Economics of wear in mining industry and methods by which wear cost may be reduced will be discussed.IntroductionCanada loses more than $5 billion annually due to friction and wear (Table 1). It is estimated that about $1.3 billion, or about 25% of the losses, could be saved through better application of existing technology (Table 2). It should be noted that the costs given in Table 1 and 2 refer to 1986. The losses due to friction and wear and the savings would be much higher in 1996. Tribology combines the many branches and specialties in science and technology concerned with understanding and combatting friction and wear. Specifically, tribology is concerned with the design and manufacture of sliding and rolling bearings, piston rings, gears, cutting tools and other devices in which surfaces interact, in sliding or other relative motion. Tribology is concerned with the correct use of materials for interacting solid surfaces, with the interaction of the surfaces with the lubricants, with the chemistry, physics and use of lubricants. It is concerned with the reduction of friction and wear and the avoidance of associated failures in machinery. Similar tribological components such as bearings are used in different technologies and similar tribological problems such as abrasive wear occur in different industries. Thus, tribology is in itself a generic science and technology, concerned with the generation and dissemination of knowledge on friction, wear and lubrication, and the application of the knowledge, to a wide range of industrial products and equipment, from ploughs to space equipment, from prosthesis to engines, from washing machines to railways, from computers to power stations, from paper mills to mines. A study of the feasibility of using acoustic signals to detect discontinuities ahead of excavation has shown that reflecting interfaces in a homogeneous rock can be easily identified. Moreover, discontinuity interfaces in a very complex field site (where the rock face was weathered, was full of jointed rocks, and had a destressed zone running along the mine walls) could be identified with a reasonable level of confidence, using a cross-correlation technique for signal processing. The results of this study go a long way toward proving the feasibility of the technique. However, further development work is needed to optimize an operating system in a hard rock environment where boring machines are used for excavation.

INTRODUCTION The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers is developing chemical explosive excavation as a construction technique for use on Civil Works projects. Large chemical charges are being used in multiple charge arrays in a variety of media and topographic situations to achieve actual construction projects. The target is the development of chemical and nuclear explosive excavation as an accepted cost-competitive construction technique. Military research using explosive excavation is also being conducted to apply this technique to military engineering for combat purposes and to military construction. The information gained from both the civil and military research is integrated into the overall development of explosive excavation. This research and development work is being conducted under the auspices of the U. S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station Explosive Excavation Research Laboratory (EERL) located at Livermore, California. This organization was formed in 1962 as the Nuclear Cratering Group (NCG) to carry out the Corps of Engineers (OCE) portion of a joint agreement with the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) to develop nuclear explosives for construction purposes. The AEC, through the Plowshare Division of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory at Livermore, California, has been responsible for developing nuclear explosives, conducting nuclear cratering experiments, developing nuclear safety information, and developing methods for predicting the shape of the craters. The Charters Towers locality has been a historically renowned gold producing region and discovery of new ore deposits during the past decade have renewed exploration interests in the area. Further mineral exploration with conventional techniques is hindered by the presence of Cainozoic sedimentary deposits and volcanic flows overlying a major portion of the basement geology. Mineral exploration thus warrants new, innovative and cost-effective methods to probe beneath the Cainozoic cover in an attempt to discover new orebodies. There is growing awareness of the role of weathering as an agent of chemical dispersion into the cover sediments as well as a producer of supergene deposits in tectonically stable cratons (Butt and Zeegers, 1992). Consequently, landscape evolution coupled with regolith geochemistry is one of the methods increasingly being used to identify relevant sampling media to explore beneath weathered cover sediments and deeply weathered bedrock terrain (Anand, 1993). The aim of this paper is to describe and elucidate the regolith - landscape features of the region and combine geochemistry to assess the pertinence of the same on mineral exploration strategies in the Charters Towers area.

Last evening, in Auckland, I heard the Chairman of Heinz US, Dr Tony O'Reilly (who, in addition to Heinz's ownership of our largest food processor, also has substantial personal investments in this country), advocate New Zealand as a 'regional corporate capital'.   Why would someone like Dr O'Reilly hold that view? No doubt, as one of Ireland's great rugby players of the 50s and 60s, he admires at least one thing that we do very well (confirmed again in Dublin over the past weekend). But that's not sufficient to support such a view.   He cited many reasons for preferring New Zealand over, say, Sydney, Australia, calling this 'the most rational in which to locate [an] international headquarters', including û +         we have no capital gains tax; +         a more 'pro-business environment'; +         a 'first class' legal and banking system; and +         a 'simple political system'.   I can find no better 'text for today's address.

The Mining Division of Iscor, an integrated minerals and metals company, has recently completed a feasibility study for the establishment of a new heavy minerals mine and smelter in the Richards Bay area of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The mine will produce a heavy mineral concentrate containing ilmenite, zircon, rutile and leucoxene which will be beneficiated at a central processing complex close to Empangeni. The ilmenite will be smelted to produce high-grade titania slag and pig iron for export. The ancient dune containing the mineral deposit is located some distance inland of the coastal dunes, and the sands contain a high proportion of extremely fine material which must be extracted ahead of the gravity separation process. Of the 56 million tonnes to be mined annually over the ten-year life of the mine approximately 23,4%?a total of 13,1 million tonnes of minus 45 micron residue fines?will have to be disposed of in a containment facility. The origin of the fine material is from the weathering of amphibole minerals. The remaining coarse sands will be returned to the mined area to re-create the original dune configuration. A number of options for the disposal of the residue fines have been examined and specialised laboratory tests undertaken to determine the deposition behaviour of the fines. The final solution involved the use of a ?sub-aerial? technique for deposition of fine material in a disposal facility. The resulting arrangement will adequately meet technical and environmental criteria. Upon closure after 10 years of operation, the surface of the disposal facility will be returned to sugar cane cultivation The paper refers to the various options considered and describes the problems associated with competent disposal of the residue fines and the development details of the final disposal facility.

In July 1997 Macraes Mining Company Limited deferred a 9 Mtpa expansion of the Macraes Gold Project because of the uncertainty of the future gold price and its impact on equity markets.  Additionally delays in the resource consenting process led to further uncertainty.   It has subsequently announced that a study has been commissioned to recommend a staged approach to development of its New Zealand business. The best economic development path will be determined to maximise returns to shareholders.

Use of this method has been limited, however, because of the difficulty of working with metal in the semi-solid state, which has strong shear rate, temperature and time-dependent properties. Exploration geologists should have an understanding of the more important metallurgical processes and the test work required for each process. The paper discusses the important metallurgical processes, the test work and sample requirements for each, and the costs and time requirements to accomplish the testing. The limitations of reverse circulation drill samples for metallurgical testing are discussed. The level of process definition required to support engineering studies: scoping, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies are also described.

"Percussion drills are the source of the most serious noise problems in mining activities, due to their extremely high noise levels(114-122 dB(A)) and widespread use(Bartholomae and Stein, 1988). Percussion drills will continue to be widely used to drill small diameter holes in hard rock because no other method seems to be economically avail-able to replace them (Boillat et al., 1993).Many studies (Danière, 1991; Hawkes etal., 1977a; Jensen and Visnapuu, 1972;Leblond et al., 1976; Milette, 1989) were con-ducted to determine the major noise sources of percussion drills. The exhaust air of pneumatic drills, the hammer, the bit in contact with the rock and the drill rod have been identified as the major noise sources. A muffer can be used to reduce the exhaust noise and the hammer can be enclosed. The bit noise is considered to be of concern only at the beginning of holes. When all the available methods are used to reduce the noise of a percussion drill, the drill rod vibrations become the dominant noise source (Hawkes and Burks, 1979). However, the noise levels generated by this source remain high and future efforts should concentrate on reducing its radiation.Works by Hawkes and Burks (1979) and Hawkes et al. (1977b) for the U.S. Bureau of Mines provide the most complete description on the noise and vibration of percussion drill rods.The longitudinal and bending waves are the two most important types of elastic waves generated in drill rods. Among these, only the longitudinal waves contribute to the drilling rate. The bending waves are caused by non-centralized impacts, drill rod curvature and non-uniform bit/rock interface. Drill rod noise is generated by Poisson’s ratio expansions and contractions of the rod as the longitudinal waves travel up and down it and by transverse rod motions induced by bending waves. The radiation efficiency is much higher for bending waves than for longitudinal waves. Most of the impact energy is transformed into longitudinal waves, as expected for axial impacts. The evaluation of the relative contribution of longitudinal and bending waves to noise generation poses a very difficult problem for experimental, analytical and numerical approaches. It is, however, an important issue because the relative contribution of these two waves will guide future noise reduction efforts. It seems that very little can be done to reduce the noise radiation of the axial waves without affecting the drilling rate. The main difficulty that analytical and numerical approach-es face, in the evaluation of the relative contribution of the two waves, is that there is no adequate theory for predicting the bending vibrations from the factors that cause them. The experimental approach has, thus, been limited to test fixtures that do not adequately represent the boundary conditions, as well as by measurements obtained under real operating conditions from which it is difficult to establish the relative contribution of the two types of waves. For example, Hawkes and Burks (1979) and Hawkes et al. (1977b) used a test fixture with free-free boundary conditions and made no clear link with measurement under real operating conditions. Rather, they have based their discussion on a simple model. Many authors assume that fexural waves are the main noise source on drill rods. However, measurements have been somewhat contradictory and researchers are still unable to state with certainty that this is indeed the case (Lednik et al., 1988)."

Because the nickel contained in lateritic nickel ores does not occur in an identifiable mineral, it is generally accepted that these ores are not amenable to beneficiation. For this reason, such ores are either directly smelted or leached to extract the nickel. In this paper, a process for enriching the nickel content of the lateritic nickel-bearing chromite overburden, normally a waste material generated during chromite mining, is described. In this flotation process, a nickel preconcentrate containing >1.1% Ni was obtained from material containing as little as 0.36% nickel. An empirical relationship was developed to predict the grade of nickel that can be obtained.
