One could say that CIM has established a level of brand recognition that transcends it name and its origin. CIM has also evolved with the times, as the world has evolved and more so as the world of mining has evolved. So we stand today with a fairly large portion of our membership residing outside Canada and outside the United States. We also stand today looking back at the role CIM has played in events that we have been partners in organizing outside Canada; and for a long time CIM has provided insights into what is going on in the rest of the mining world by inviting authors and by featuring topics from around the globe.Today, Canada is still a leader in the mining industry. Canadian mining companies are involved in exploration and operations around the world. Canadian operations serve a good portion of the global demand of many metals and minerals, recently adding diamonds to the slate. Canadian expertise in various areas also makes Canada a good base for exporting a wide range of products and services around the world."

Controlling noise has proven difficult in mining, and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) remains common. In 2008, a South African Mine Health and Safety Council study focused on small- to medium-sized mines in relation to the milestones set by the industry to prevent NIHL. An evaluation of the compliance of ten diamond, sand, aggregate and Ready mix concrete mines and production sites with standards, legislation and best practice guidelines relating to NIHL prevention was conducted, using a noise compliance audit tool. The findings indicated that all mines surveyed had poor compliance with the international standards, compliance with International Standards Organization standards being the poorest. There was a clear distinction between the small and the medium-sized mines in their compliance with local standards and legislation (ranging from 14 per cent to 66 per cent). The areas of best compliance were audiology and medical examinations. The lower-than-expected compliance was largely attributable to shortcomings in hearing conservation programmes for occupational noise. Initiation of remedial practices in the small- to medium-scale mining sector to facilitate improvements in NIHL prevention and compliance with standards and legislation is recommended. The reality of rising electrical power costs and the haunting prospect of decreasing electrical power availability are a threat to the growth of new projects and expansion programmes that could negatively affect the sustainability of mining operations. These threats require the adoption of effective power saving measures aimed at three principal objectives: the elimination of wastage, the reduction of power usage particularly during peak demand periods and, more importantly, improving the efficiency of high power-demand processes. It is reasonable to assume that the greatest impact will be achieved by concentrating on those processes that are large electrical power consumers. For Anglo Platinum operations, mine ventilation and, currently to a lesser extent, mine cooling are two continuous processes that fall in this category. It is estimated that these may consume fifteen to thirty-five per cent of the power delivered to the shaft head-depending on the shaft's design. Mine ventilation systems suffer from inherent, historical inefficiencies that lead to excessive power consumption. Air cooling systems are designed to be energy-wise in terms of modulating refrigeration plant operation to meet the underground requirements while maximizing use of 'free' cooling from surface conditions. Currently about ninety-five per cent of the refrigeration capacity used in Anglo Platinum mines is dedicated to surface bulk air coolers. The net thermal efficiency of these systems is compromised as mines expand in depth and on strike. Looking to the future, this practice will be complemented by more energy demanding underground cooling tactics requiring considerably higher electrical power consumption per unit ton produced. To counter this increase in power consumption, more energy-efficient systems and advantageous transient strategies such as thermal storage and the use of ice-on surface and possibly even underground-are being considered. This paper describes work currently undertaken and planned by Anglo Platinum operations to reduce power consumption by main fans during off-shift periods, the associated efforts currently introduced to reduce underground air leakage, the possibility of introducing more efficient auxiliary ventilation systems, the feasibility of thermal storage, and a brief look at energy recovery system as a means of countering the anticipated power demand associated with underground cooling. The Surface Mining Control & Reclamation Act is a complex piece of legislation signed into law on August 3, 1977. It is the culmination of more than six years of debate by the Congress over the need for a national regulation of surface mining as opposed to the prior concept of regulation by each concerned state. It departs from the more normal type of law in that it includes very specific requirements, limitations and performance standards. In its procedural aspects, it is somewhat similar to the Clean Air Act and the Water Pollution Control Act in that it places primary responsibility at the state level, provided the state meets minimum national requirements. At the time of writing this paper, in late December 1978, the Interim Regulatory Program has been in effect for seven months. The proposed regulations for the Permanent Program, the draft Environmental Impact Statement, and the draft Regulatory (Economic) Analysis ware available for eight weeks before the close of the comment period on November 27. We are now awaiting issuance of the final versions of these documents. The states in which coal is mined, for the most part, have made sere revision to their state laws and are in the process of revising their regulations, or have just completed the revision, to comply with the Initial Regulatory Procedures. They are now faced with another new major effort to analyze and plan for compliance with the Permanent Regulatory Program, which is expected to be promulgated by the Office of Surface Mining of the Department of Interior by the time this paper is presented.

With annual production of almost 3.5 million metric tonnes of K20, former East Germany (GDR) was the world?s third-largest producer of potash, ranking behind only the Soviet Union and Canada. More than 80 % of production was intended for export to earn urgently needed hard currency. For this reason, beginning in the 1970s, East Germany began to mine unprofitable hard-salt sources and carnallitite fields, which are geomechanically problematic. In the course of restructuring from a centrally planned to a market economy after German reunification, only two of the nine existing potash mines were classified as economically viable for privatization. All six potash mines in the South Harz Region were closed between 1991 and 1993. The orderly safekeeping of these potash and other decommissioned ore mines and the rededication of mining areas were assigned in 1992 to a German state-owned company GVV founded especially for this purpose. Elaboration in the present documentation covers the local necessity of the type and extent of filling and safeguarding measures. As a result of the remedial measures taken, it was possible to prevent the collapse of cavities and damage to surface facilities. This documentation describes the safeguarding successes to date, with appreciable reduction and stabilization of surface settlement and with significant lessening of seismic events. Also presented are concepts updated to the state of the art for safeguarding of numerous potash mining shafts for long-term effectiveness in separation of the workings and watercourse levels in the cap rock. In the course of 100 years of production, six mining dumps resulted with a total volume of approximately 170 million m3. They consist of up to 95 % of water-soluble salts. Every year, precipitation dissolves up to 500,000 tonnes of this salt, which enters as a highly concentrated solution into watercourses and ground water. Explanation follows of measures for minimization of environmental pollution by covering of dumps and controlled drainage of alkaline solutions from the dumps. Finally, presentation is made of the results of the successful work until now by GVV for reuse of decommissioned mining sites with settlement of new companies for creation of additional jobs and for revitalization of the monostructured South Harz Potash Mining Region.

"INTRODUCTIONPine Point Mines, operated by Cominco Ltd., is located approximately 65 miles east of Hay River, N.W.T. on the south shore of Great Slave Lake.The milling operation started in the fall of 1965 with a capacity of 5,000 tpd. An addition was put into operation late in 1968 to bring the nominal capacity up to 8,000 tpd. The present milling rate is 11,000 tpd.With a feed grade of approximately 2.9% Pb and 6.0% Zn the annual concentrate production amounts to roughly 130,000 SDT of lead concentrate and 370,000 SDT of zinc concentrate for a total of 1/2 million tons of product.This tonnage is moved by railroad. Pine Point is served by the Great Slave Lake Division (G.S.L.) of the Canadian National Railways which connects to the Northern Alberta Railway System (N.A.R.) at Roma Junction, at Peace River, Alberta. The system in turn connects to the CNR and the CPR in Edmonton, Alberta. From here the concentrates move inland chiefly to Trail, B.C., with some shipment to other Canadian and U.S. smelters, and to the port facilities of Pacific Coast Terminals at New Westminster, B.C. for offshore export.This paper will focus on the problems associated with the movement of lead and zinc concentrates from Pine Point to port facilities on the west coast."

?Energy-related systems: wind, solar, electric are typically materials intensive. As new technologies are widely deployed, significant quantities of the elements required to manufacture them will be needed. However, many of these unfamiliar elements are not presently mined, refined or traded in large quantities, and, as a result, their availability might be constrained by many complex factors. A shortage of these ?energy-critical elements? could significantly inhibit the adoption of otherwise game-changing energy technologies. "Since early 2015, the price of nickel has dropped from the region of US$6/pound to current levels of around US$4.60/pound (March 2017), reflecting several market factors, but principally due to lower demand from China. Under such conditions, nickel companies have been under pressure to contain operating costs. In addition, labor and energy costs will continue to rise, while nickel ore grades will likely continue to drop. All major companies now accept the need for climate change action and consequently efforts are being made towards lowering carbon-based emissions. Nevertheless, meeting these challenges can also contribute to higher operating costs without parallel innovative developments - which at the same time, under current conditions, major companies are tending to curtail. In this paper, several productivity improvement opportunities to reduce unit operating costs at nickel sulphide and nickel laterite plants are reviewed. Opportunities include: (a) process technology and energy-type selection, production capability, optimization of process intensity and implementation of newer technologies; (b) improved productivity, equipment availability including maintenance best practice; (c) energy savings and recovery opportunities and use of energy surveys and, (d) process modeling and improved scheduling. Such improvements along with an uptick seen in nickel demand going forward should better position the world nickel industry.INTRODUCTION Nickel is an essential metal to modern society, primarily through its use as an important ingredient in stainless steel. Thus, stainless steel finds vital applications in food preparation facilities, as well as important uses in transportation and industrial applications. Canada has always played an important role in nickel production and nickel metallurgy. In the 1940s and 1950s, Canada supplied over 90% of the world’s nickel. However, this proportion has declined considerably to around 10% of the world nickel supply today. Still, Canada remains an important nickel supplier and contributor to nickel extractive technology. Due to the importance of nickel to society, nickel demand is expected to continually rise. On the other hand, nickel companies have been under pressure to contain production costs amid languishing nickel prices. While demand projections show nickel growth, there are uncertainties in actual levels of future market growth. Ore grades are dropping, while labour and energy costs, which are key cost contributors are rising, hence efforts to lower production costs will generally require innovative approaches."

With a focus on safe productive tonnes, there has been an ongoing drive to increase the productivity of the mining fleet across BHP Billiton. In response, a team from the Iron Ore business was formed to review all aspects of the end-to-end drill and blast process and to challenge conventional practices that limit production efficiency. As a result of the outcomes of this work, a number of initiatives were identified to improve operational practices that have also delivered significant cost savings.One such initiative was to increase pattern size to a minimum of 1 Mt where practicable, thereby creating ‘megablast’ as a new standard across all mines. To achieve blasts of this size, the team had to overcome the complex problem of integrating wall control into the megablasts.With traditional blasting techniques, the key strategy, which is also historically inefficient but was thought to be integral to having stable, safe walls, was to utilise the trim blasting/modified production blasts technique (ie narrow blasts along the pit wall designed to ‘peel off’ the material while minimising the effects of vibration and charge confinement on wall integrity).Small traditional trim patterns comprise three to four rows of production holes and one or two rows of batter/buffer holes of reduced diameter that require the firing face to be completely exposed before blasting. This is an extremely slow process that requires a lot of resources for very little tonnage while adding additional expense to the final cost per tonne.This paper will show how the megablast approach was developed to control damaging vibration and confinement effects, flyrock and fragmentation while having the largest possible blast that includes wall control. The new practice is based on a theory that involves the initiation point and control row being the second row of holes from the pit wall itself. Adjusted charges in vented batter and buffer holes help to achieve an optimal toe design, and at the same time create a zone of broken ground that absorbs damaging vibrations formed by the attached production blast of any size, whether it is a straight wall or a multi-angled complex pit shell design.Using the new style of blasting has allowed an increase in the size of the patterns from an average of 300 kt to over 1 Mt whilst maintaining pit wall integrity. Case studies will be presented showing drill, charge and tie-in designs with the presentation having additional blast videos, including overall shots of blasts and in-close footage of what happens behind the blast at the crest of the planned catchment berm.The paper will also demonstrate the flow-on effect of using this style of blasting to reduce operational costs associated with other downstream processes, such as the reduced requirements for pattern preparation, an increase in productive digging, reduced maintenance costs and a decrease in fuel burn for equipment.CITATION:Green, B, 2015. "INTRODUCTION Successful management of megaprojects, meaning delivery within budget, on time and according to expectations, is a fundamental requirement. Many projects have been successful, some have not. This paper reviews megaprojects1, drawn from the author’s projects over the last 50 years, with “lessons-learned” and a summary of recommendations that, if implemented, would improve megaproject management and delivery. Characteristics of these projects are summarized – including outcomes related to key factors such as politics, management, organizational structure, contracting methods, cost estimates, risk and other elements. The projects include the Washington D.C. Metro, Boston Southwest Corridor, LA Metro, Toronto Rapid Transit Expansion Program, BART San Francisco, MARTA Atlanta, London Underground and the Washington State Highway megaprojects – including the SR520 Floating Bridge and the Alaskan Way tunnel. Other projects that illustrate successful, innovative management and contracting methods include the Madrid Metro (low-cost delivery), the Sydney Northside Storage tunnel (outturn cost, alliancing) and the Lake Mead tunnel (working in partnership, risk management). KEY ISSUES A characteristic of megaprojects is that their complexity increases exponentially with size (Reilly 2010, Galloway et al. 2012). These projects are very visible politically, have many stakeholders who must be satisfied and generally span many years and political election cycles. To be successful they must meet expectations, function efficiently, and be delivered under, at or close to budget and schedule. There is a widely-based perception that large, complex projects are always delivered late, over budget and with problems. Specific examples include projects such as Tren Urbano in Puerto Rico – $1.28 billion over initial budget (+133%), the Silver Line Transitway Project in Boston – $286 million over budget (+90%), the London Jubilee Line Transit Project – 2 years late and £1.4 billion (+67%) over budget, the Channel Tunnel Rail Project – £3.7 billion (+80%) over budget, Denmark’s Great Belt Link rail and road link (54% over budget), the 2003 Woodrow Wilson bridge tender in Virginia (72% over estimate) and Boston’s Central Artery Project – several billion (perhaps 100%) over what would have been a realistic initial budget and years late (Reilly 2001c, 2004a; Salvucci 2003)."

Magmatic and/or hydrothermal fluid systems in island or mountain arcs self-organise to critical states subject to perturbation by changes in the regional stress, which plays a controlling role in the containment of overpressured fluids. Whether the magmatic arc is under compression (eg Andes, northern Honshu) or extension (eg Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand) is a key factor controlling the ease of magmatic or hydrothermal fluid ascent. Abrupt changes in the stress regime have the potential to induce major episodes of fluid redistribution. Large earthquake ruptures along plate boundaries may induce such changes over broad areas, also contributing to fluid redistribution by renewing fault permeability along the causative rupture zone or reactivating distant fault-fracture permeability by shaking from radiated waves. High-resolution geophysical investigations of active arc systems and the subduction thrust interface underlying their fore-arcs reveal repositories of overpressured hydrothermal fluids. In active magmatic arcs under compression such as NE Honshu or Cascadia, there is evidence for a heterogeneous distribution of overpressured hydrothermal fluids in the middle-to-lower crust trapped around the base of the upper crustal seismogenic zone. Investigations of the subduction thrust interface responsible for great (Mw = 8.0) ‘megathrust’ earthquake ruptures has revealed in some instances (Cascadia, SW Japan) the existence of a belt of non-volcanic tremor (NVT) with accompanying slow slip episodes defining the base of the megathrust interface at 40 ± 5 km and 350°C??-??550°C. Aqueous fluid at these depths is likely derived from dehydration reactions accompanying the basalt-eclogite transition in subducted oceanic crust. NVT sequences in the hanging-wall above the interface may be defining migration pathways into the overlying crust.The potential for eruptive episodes in magmatic arcs and redistribution of hydrothermal fluids is assessed in the light of the stress changes that followed the 2011 Mw9.0 Tohoku subduction thrust rupture which extended along strike for over 500 km and down-dip for over 150 km, with maximum slip of c 50 m.

The Meikle Mine uses long-hole open stoping and cut-and-fill methods with backfill as the primary ground support technique. The mine operates at 2,858 tonnes per day (3,150 tpd) and has sustained operation in excess of 3,175 tonnes per day (3,500 tpd). Consistent backfill production is critical in achieving these mining rates. The heart of the system is a 7.65 cubic meter (10-cyd) horizontal shaft ribbon mixer located 328 m (1,075 ft) underground. System control is through several PLC's, allowing for a high degree of automation and process flexibility. Aggregate feed is routed 257 m (842 A) through vertical drop pipes in the ventilation shaft, a rockbox, transfer raises, and then into either of two raisebored storage silos. The aggregate is crushed mine waste, nominally 70% 3.8 cm x 1.0 cm (1-1/2"x 3/8") and 30% -1.0 cm (- 3/8"). The binder is routed through a vertical borehole, surge bins, and transfer raises. The binder is a mixture of Type II cement and fly ash. Two primary manufactured fill designs are produced: a high strength mix for stopes which will be undercut; and a low strength mix for stopes with only rib exposure. The high strength target is 5.5 Mpa (800psi) unconfined compressive strength in test cylinders. The low strength target is 2.8 Mpa (400 psi). The systim has allowed consistent achievement of these targets, while experience has allowed reduced costs and increased efficiencies. Fill placement is through 6.1 cubic meter (8 cyd) LHD's dumping into stopes. Specific sills and cut-and-fill drifts are jammed to the back. System enhancements have included colloidal mixers for cemented waste slurry placement and transfer raises for sending manufactured fill to the lower levels of the mine.

Con el objetivo de lograr mejoras en los resultados de los indicadores operativos, reducir costos e incrementar la rentabilidad, la unidad minera Tambomayo estableció planes de acción de corto y mediano plazo, alineados a la metodología PHVA (planificar, hacer, verificar y actuar). El presente trabajo describe la mejora continua en los procesos de dicha unidad minera, bajo una gestión de indicadores. Se planteó la implementación de un centro de control de operaciones (CCO) en el interior de la mina y se implementaron planes de mejora en los procesos de la cadena de valor del negocio minero (exploración, minado y beneficio). Se obtuvieron resultados positivos en productividad y rentabilidad, evidenciados a través de las mejoras en el desempeño de los indicadores operativos, tales como sostenibilidad de la producción y costos.

El logro de los requerimientos granulométricos del material con mineral aplicando la energía química está en función de dos aspectos el primero la competencia del macizo rocoso tanto en dureza, elasticidad y nivel de fracturamiento del macizo rocoso y el segundo la cantidad, distribución y liberación de la energía de los explosivos. Por esta razón, el objetivo principal de este trabajo es presentar los resultados con el diseño de carguío que permitió realizar trabajo de esfuerzos en el sector con menos influencia de energía para la reducción de sobre tamaños y a la par que sea sostenible operativamente manteniendo el nivel de productividad en el proceso de carguío con camiones fabrica.

En este trabajo se describe el sistema de controles automáticos desarrollados (in house) e implementados en el circuito de molienda de Compañía Minera Antamina, el mismo que abarca molinos SAG, de bolas y los hidrociclones respectivos. Los mecanismos implementados están basados en el control por lógica Fuzzy y las bandas de Bollinger. En el artículo, se indican los criterios empleados para el diseño de los controladores y las variables del proceso, en el caso de indicadores de distancia del centro de masa de la carga respecto al centro del molino de bolas. Finalmente, se informa el impacto positivo logrado con la estabilización del circuito.

Por ello, los esfuerzos en la optimización de esta repercutirán en los resultados financieros de la empresa. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la optimización el efecto del collar de bolas como elemento importante de la molienda donde a través de una metodología de caracterización se puede determinar la función selección específica para cada collar de bolas y así establecer, en base a los parámetros de las funciones selección y fractura y las simulaciones, el collar óptimo de bolas a emplear. Así también, se presentan los beneficios obtenidos en el proceso producto de la optimización del collar de bolas."
