"Des quartzites trés pars ont été découverts au cours de la cartographie de la region du lac des Martres, étape de l'étude géologique de la region de Charlevoix.On distingue quatre groupes métasédimentaires, tons con tenant des niveaux de quartzite dans an mains deux domaines géologique différents, c'est à l'ouest, clans le do¬maine gneisso-charnockitique que se situent les quartzites du groupe des Martres. Quartzite et gneiss à, grenat et sillimanite, en banes épais, constituent la formation de La Galette. A Pest, dans un environnement gneisso-granitique, les deux groupes métasédimentaires de Saint-Siméon, et de La Malbaie comprennent, par contraste, des bancs pen épais et de compositions variées. Les niveaux de quartzite dépassent rarement 50 m d'épaisseur. L'autre groupe métasédimentaires, celui de Saint-Tite des Caps, recoupé de nombreuses intrusions charnockitiques et granitiques, ne possède que de minces niveaux de quartzite.La pureté et la grande épaisseur des quartzites de La Galette suppose une histoire complexe qui se termine par des depots continentaux de climat aride, par opposition aux depots marins des autres groupes. D'autre part, la presence de ces quartzites an sein de roches Presque anhy¬dres et de haute temperature que sont les charnockites leur confére des caractéristiques de fusion sans decrepitation.Parmi la multitude de depots de quartzite qui existe clans le monde, peu sont de qualité supérieure. Or, de par sa composition chimique, le quartzite de La Galette se compare avantageusement à ceux des meilleurs gisements des Etats-Unis, de l'Europe de l'Ouest et de l'Afrique du Sud. D'accès facile pour l'exploitation, les gisements ne sont qu'à une trentaine de milles de Baie Saint-Paul ou de La Malbaie, sur le Saint-Laurent.L'utilisation en metallurgic prévue pour le quartzite de La Galette comprend la production de silicium, de ferro¬silicium et d'autres alliages de silicium. La composition du quartzite est en outre appropriée pour la production de carbure de silicium et de silicate de sodium. Les fines peuvent être utilisées pour la fabrication du verre et comme matiere de charge"

El siguiente estudio se basa en un trabajo anteriormente desarrollado en las minas de Quiruvilca por la compañía Northern, donde se efectuó un control radiográfico a sus trabajadores, obteniendo como resultado la enfermedad de silicosis en dicha zona minera. Por ello, el presente trabajo señala la importancia de las políticas de desarrollo y prevención de dicha anomalía, a partir de la información de la organización médica de Higiene industrial y de los demás ingenieros a cargo. La silicosis se produce a través de la inhalación del polvo que contiene sílice libre ( partículas menores de 5 micras) aproximadamente. Así, la primera medida a tomar es la reducción de dicho polvo en el yacimiento minero, manteniendo un porcentaje establecido en dicho polvo menor doscientos millones de partículas por metro cúbico de aire). Sin embago, si hay una mayor particularidad del elemento, mayor será la toxicidad a la superficie donde se encuentra. La segunda medida estriba en la protección a los trabajadores del polvo a través del equipo adecuado. La tercera medida, implica suministrar ventilación adecuada y obtener de la que se disponga el mayor rendimiento posible. Finalmente, la corporacion minera debe estar conciente de las medidas y garantías del control de dichos polvos, así como del examen médico previo, cambios de colocación, control periódico y de una compensación por enfernmedad profesional.

Si define la simulación digital y las técnicas de simulación son revisadas. La metodologia tipica conlleva la selección de modelos, el ajuste o reajuste de los datos primarios, la selección de una estrategia de acoplamiento, la valoración de la precisión del modelo en un sentido estadistico, y el desarrollo de estructura de simulación ejecutiva. La simulación sirve de ayuda para los ingenieros de procesos para evaluar la viabilidad de un esquema de flujo propuesto y el efecto de la modificación de un flujograma ya existente. Por otro lado, la simulación juega un papel importante en la optimación "off-line" y en la evaluación de estrategias de control de circuitos alternativos. Son presentados varios ejemplos para ilustrar estas utilizaciones para la simulación, incluyendo aplicaciones en los circuitos de trituración, circuitos de molienda y circuitos de flotación. Es de opinión de los autores que, dentro de la próxima década, las plantas de proceso de minerales serán estudiadas rutinariamente a través de una simulación digital durante las etapas preliminares de diseño. La simulación constituirá un importante componente en la toma de decisiones de un proceso.

El presente texto señala la situación del carbón en el valle del Santa, al tiempo que busca reivindicar su posición, producción y demanda del mismo. Para ello, el doctor Fraser describe las características del mineral, encontrando que el carbón del tipo "La Limeña" contiene una elevada gravedad y friabilidad, como un buen porcentaje de los "middlings". Posteriormente se realizaron pruebas como la del carbón R.O.M. en una planta Bradford improvisada, demostrando que el carbón y los "middlings", se trituran fácilmente gracias a la friabilidad del mismo y que el producto de tamaño mayor puede ser escogido a mano fácilmente para su disposición futura. Mientras que las pruebas de diversas clases de "middlings", evidencian dificultad en el tratamiento para la recuperación de carbón puro, pues el triturado a tamaños finos libera sólo pequeñas cantidades de carbón "float", manteniéndo su calidad inferior en comparación con los finonaturales, que se trituran fácilmente del R.O.M. y del producto de la planta Bradford. De otro lado, se describe el beneficio del carbón en las minas, la conservación de maquinaria, uso de briquetas, el empleo del ferrocarril como transporte y las instalaciones de las plantas lavadoras del banco minero en Chimbote y planta pallasca en Chimbote.

Así también se analiza y sintetiza las estrategias más resaltantes de las autoridades mineras en países como Chile, Colombia, Estados Unidos, Canadá y Australia, con respecto a las estadísticas de los accidentes mortales, el marco normativo en seguridad minera y el alcance de sus funciones en la supervisión minera.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed a series of lab tests to evaluate the respirable dust removal capacity of an industrial air-cleaning fan. Limestone and coal dust were tested separately in NIOSH’s full-scale drill table simulator at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD). Gravimetric samplers with Dorr-Oliver Cyclones and 37-mm filters were used at two upstream and four downstream locations inside and outside of the drill shroud chamber. There were six tests performed for both the limestone and coal dust experiments. In the limestone tests, an average respirable dust concentration of 98.86 mg/m3 was achieved upstream of the air-cleaning fan. The filter results show that the averaged respirable limestone dust reductions were 7.84%, 8.81%, 10.94%, and 18.02% at the four sampling locations downstream of the fan. In the coal tests, upstream samplers achieved an average of 129.03 mg/m3 of respirable coal dust. The averaged dust reductions were 9.54%, 9.83%, 18.54%, and 19.21% at the four downstream sampling points. The results indicate limited cost benefits of using this technology because of the relatively low dust reductions determined from this laboratory study.

One of the main issues regarding the use of charcoal in metallurgical processes is its mechanical strength, which is much lower than coke. There is no defined standard to determine charcoal compression strength, and the methods described in the literature consist in using a prepared specimen and applying compressing load in the same direction of the charcoal fibres. As charcoal is highly anisotropic, it is proposed a procedure that does not use a specimen and with load applied on a specific direction. Instead, it intends to simulate industrial conditions by randomly dumping charcoal inside a tube, without preferential directional arrangement. This is an attempt to determine charcoal mechanical strength and predict the behaviour of bulk charcoal under a static load, as in a blast furnace. Experiments with controlled loads have been carried out on randomly distributed bulk charcoal with controlled initial size and their effect on the size distribution has been analysed. After compression, charcoal is screened and each size is weighed, determining the particle size distribution of the experiment. This method can therefore be used to evaluate charcoal mechanical strength.

ANTHRACITE in 1943, in common with the coal industry as a whole, passed through a year of wage negotiations that seemed endless. In the early months discussion of the United Mine Workers' demands was taken up and carried on continuously until May, finally reaching an impasse when the Union refused to continue at work, while submitting their demands to the War Labor Board. Thus a strike threatened, averted by the Federal Government taking over the industry, effective May 1, by order of the President. An office of the Bureau of Mines was established in Wilkes-Barre under the direction of J. J. Forbes, Mineral Production Security Division, as regional manager, who conducted operations until September, 1943, when the collieries were turned back to the operators. But the miners did not agree with the War Labor Board's award rendered in the fall, resulting in a recurrence of the previously threatened strike. again averted by Government control. In addition to the major upsets, a number of individual suspensions occurred at various mines. In spite of these drawbacks, to which might be added the difficulty of obtaining equipment and the scarcity of man power, the industry by November was only little less than a million tons short of the previous year. and in all probability, finally produced but little less than in 1942. This little less. however, was greatly missed in the market.

Not many accounts of mining methods or labor conditions in the mines in early days can be found; all that have seemed to be authentic have been included in the preceding chapters. In practically every field opened before 18.10 the first coal was recovered by quarrying, or strip mining, the operations, of course, being by hand and on a very small scale; new places were opened as soon as mining became difficult or expensive. Where it became necessary to drift into the hillsides, the first coal was taken out by sleds, and later by small wagons, the power being supplied by the miner, often assisted by dogs. Wooden rails then came into use with small cars running on them. These cars were very small, usually holding only a few bushels; in the Belleville, Illinois field as late as 1863 cars having capacities of 10, 12, 14 and some as large as 30 bushels were in use. It was not until late in the 1830's that horses or mules came into use for haulage purposes in the Pittsburgh region, although some had been used in the Richmond, Virginia field at an earlier date. Coal was usually undercut by hand and wedged down, until explosives came into general use, and in nearly every field the coal was forked into the cars, the fine coal, or slack, being left in the mine. Hours worked were very long, but few records remain to show what they were at different places and times; there was undoubtedly a great variation between districts and mines. Roy stated a miner could often produce 5 or 6 tons in a day of 8 or 9 hours in a 5 or 6 foot seam, but in another seam possibly could mine only 3 1/2 to 4 tons. He estimated an average day's work in a four foot seam at about 3 1/2 tons.1 In a strike in the Belleville field in 1863 it was found that an average skilled miner in the field could probably produce 4 to 5 tons a day.2 This was only the coarse coal loaded and did not include slack. In 1873, a coal undercutting machine was tried at a mine about two miles from Brazil, Indiana, said to be the first coal machine ever invented in the United States. It was run by a 5 H.P. steam engine (later to be changed to compressed air), and consisted of an iron rim, four feet in diameter with movable steel teeth placed about one foot apart. The rim

ISSUES IN MINING LABOR The examination of mining labor issues is often confined to health, and safety. There are other issues, including the present state of mining manpower availability and utilization, and the nature of mineral industries' industrial relations, which are worthy of consideration. The state of the labor market for mining skills, the availability and utilization of mining engineers and related disciplines, the state of research and its employment of scientists and engineers, and the condition of mining industrial relations with all these groups, all have an important effect on the viability and economic health of the minerals production sector. PRODUCTION LABOR Why examine an industry's production labor market? People involved in an industry should be aware of what labor supplies will be relative to industry requirements. This advance information allows industry and government to plan ahead to alleviate problems by moving to affect labor supplies or to accommodate production to expected labor supplies. This is less costly and less painful than responding after the fact to labor market changes. Any industry requires some form of labor. Labor is especially important to the mining industry. Mining labor is well paid. Average annual earnings are higher than in manufacturing. Average hourly wages are also higher. Payroll costs form a high percentage of total cost in coal mining and nonmetallic minerals mining. In metal mining the percentage is comparable to the average for manufacturing. Payroll cost in oil and gas extraction is quite low, but a major proportion of cost is in the form of income to proprietors, i.e., unincorporated businesses. Mining labor is worthy of specific attention. The minerals extraction labor is unique in many ways. Mining labor and especially underground miners are differentiated from other "unskilled" labor. Miners cannot be considered as part of a larger labor pool. The mining labor market has exhibited a unique combination of characteristics. Mining is the only large sector of United States employment in which hourly wages are high and continuing to rise, yet employment declines. Although industry has introduced new labor-saving investments, and labor requirements continue to decline, there is evidence of a mining labor shortage. Specific problems have arisen in the mining labor market such as a present labor shortage in nonfuels mining. Understanding the causes and remedies for these specific problems is also important. These various problems and questions may be handled in a unified manner by examining the relationships of certain economic variables. FOR the use of workmen and employees, the company should establish a dispensary and a -hospital where workmen who suffer accidents or professional diseases may be taken care of; and at suitable places in the mine or metallurgical plant it should install first-aid stations. Workmen have a right to receive 75 per cent of their wages while they are unable to perform their work as result of a professional disease; but some companies pay full wages and in the case of natural disease, with the exception of venereal, alcoholism, injuries from fights, and chronic illnesses, 50 per cent of their wages up to a period of two months. The number of diseases the Law considers as professional is large and increases almost daily. Among the professional diseases, the one which has caused greatest harm to the miners and expense to the companies is silicosis. To avoid its propagation, companies should take every possible precaution that the working atmosphere is free from dust, abating this by frequent sprinkling of the workings using, wet drills and furnishing the workmen adequate protective apparatus such as respirators.

The history of labor relations in the coal industry of the United States is a study of its collective bargaining. This study of collective bargaining is largely the history of the United Mine Workers of America and its contractual relations with the various coal mining employers who have produced this country's coal over the years under a free enterprise system. There have been other unions in the picture from time to time and some coal miners have mined coal without representation by any union. Even today some 25% of the nation's coal is produced outside of the collective bargaining relationship with the UMWA. However, more than 100,000 coal mine wage employees - well over 75% of the total in the industry - are covered by labor agreements negotiated for them by the UMWA. Practically all of these work in bituminous mines.

The industries engaged in winning minerals from the earth, because of their widespread dissemination, are faced with perhaps as wide a variety of labor-management problems as may be found in any other broad sphere of productive activity. Those problems are continually increasing in volume and complexity, and management has become aware of their growing importance. For the past quarter century at least, labor-management problems have largely been union-management problems. During this period tremendous assistance has been given labor unions through legislation and administrative and political action. In the United States, legislation favorable to unions has come about in the form of the now defunct National Industrial Recovery Act; the Wagner Act, most of which has been carried forward in the Taft-Hartley Act; the Norris-La Guardia Act; the Wage and Hour Law; the Walsh-Healey Act; and others. The result has been to transfer from the hands of management to those who direct the affairs of the unions a large share of control over the industry and to hamper in many ways the remaining control left to management. In the United States there are many examples of the power of unions to injure whole industries seriously with- out regard to the interests of management, the employes, or the public. This chapter deals with the various phases of labor-management relations as they affect the principal segments of the mineral industry in North America. To the greatest extent possible available data is presented pertaining to the unions involved, their relative strengths, labor law, compensation and fringe benefits of employes, working conditions, and related matters. As background, the historical development of union-management relations in the respective segments is included where possible. (Canal Zone Meeting, November, 1910.) UNDER the title, Labor-Saving Appliances in the Works-Laboratory, I published a paper1 in which was described how multi-manipulations, in a works-laboratory, and in the furnace-room of an assay-laboratory, can be condensed into single manipulations by applying the proper mechanical devices. For example, I now deposit in, or withdraw from, a muffle a set of 48 cupels as one unit. The front row. (8) of these. are blanks or heaters; the other 40, when they have attained the proper temperature in the muffle, are charged simultaneously with the 40 lead-buttons. Three manipulations here accomplish an operation which by the generally customary method requires 136, and this number is only limited by the size of muffle and cupels. This operation is an enlargement of what I have already described in my former paper, and Fig. I shows the improved implements. In the paper referred to I described a gold-silver bead parting-bath, which is the last of the devices used in regular sequence in practice. This bath was designated as being convenient, but was not a labor-saver properly. Fig. 2 of the present paper shows a new device. Instead of the original tray, there are now sectional holders for the test-tubes, each having a wooden handle on either end, so that the holders may be removed from the boiling bath, and the acid or water poured off from each set of tubes (in this case, 7) without waiting to cool. The tubes, held in place by clutches, as shown in Fig. 3, rest in holes in the base-strip, having a smaller diameter than the tubes. Each holder is stamped at either end with a number, so that the bath becomes further useful by permitting several men to use it at the same time without interference. THE present ruling principle in shop and factory, induced by conditions of. keen competition, is to do the greatest amount of work in the shortest time, or in other words, to secure the greatest output at least cost, a condition which generally necessitated the substitution of machinery for manual labor. The chemical laboratory in our industrial establishments has remained a factor of minor importance, and, for this, reason, not only has progress been permitted to lag, but the methods of analytical work have been carried on along individual traditional lines. Some works-laboratories are equipped with such conveniences as Gooch filters, suction-pumps, compressed air, shaking-machines, centrifugal machines, crushers, etc., yet there is much room for improvement, particularly in laboratories of metal smelting and refining plants, in which long series of filtrations and stirrings are performed singly by hand in a slow and laborious manner. There are also many other instances in which collective handling appears rational. As a rule the chemist wastes much time by such manual labor, which, in a modern establishment and under up-to-date management, could be more advantageously applied to useful chemical work; and such higher chemical work is gradually and surely becoming recognized as an essential extension of old-time methods of assaying. While it maybe said that in some laboratories, boys and not chemists do the manual labor, it should be borne in mind that all chemical work requires care and accuracy and in these respects boys are naturally a source of concern to the responsible chemist. Moreover, the cheapness of child-labor is largely offset by the increase in the expense-account of laboratory materials, caused chiefly by breakages resulting from care¬lessness.
