An industrial mineral, says the Glossary of Geologic Terms, is "any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metallic ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones; one of the nonmetallics." Probably most geologists and engineers would accept this simple and straightforward definition, at least as a general statement. On analysis, however, certain anomalies crop up. For example, it may be considered arbitrary to include industrial diamond and corundum, but to exclude their precious varieties, gem diamond and sapphire. So the present volume has a section on gems and gem materials, in spite of the definition. Another problem arises when we try to define precisely what is metallic and what is nonmetallic. Bauxite and ilmenite certainly qualify as metallic ores, but both are also raw materials of important nonmetallic substances; hence they are included in the book. A third anomaly is that, by common consent of geologists, engineers, mineral economists, and others concerned, the term industrial minerals may include not only rocks and minerals but also certain manufactured products like cement and lime, and even mixed groups of natural and artificial products, such as abrasives and refractories. Thus the central realm of the industrial minerals is clear enough, but its boundaries tend to be indefinable. Since a definition that allowed for every irregularity in the outer fringes would be excessively un- wieldy, the one quoted above may be considered satisfactory. The expression industrial minerals is commonly equated with nonmetallics, and with the somewhat more precise phrase industrial minerals and rocks as in the title of this book.

Characteristics of the Field The industrial minerals as broadly interpreted are a highly diverse group of materials; indeed, we may say paradoxically that diversity is about all they have in common. At one end of the spectrum are ordinary earth materials such as gravel and crushed stone, with a value of perhaps $3 per st; at the opposite end are industrial diamonds, which sell (by the carat) at the rate of roughly $18,000,000 per st. Neither the metals nor the fuels, and few if any categories of manufactured products, include items that differ in value by more than six orders of magnitude. Most gravel and stone are of no value unless close to a market; diamonds and other exotic substances possess such unique and desirable properties that their occurrence in remote corners of the earth is no deterrent to their use. The broad range of industrial minerals falls between these extremes of unit value and place value. The industrial minerals penetrate the entire fabric of modern industrialized society, from such fundamental operations as drilling for oil and smelting iron ore to the manufacture of virtually the whole array of consumer products. There is no industrial-minerals industry; there are many industries. The simple term field is convenient as an all-inclusive expression. An industry is considered to belong in the industrial-minerals field if its operations consist of extraction and processing, but not manufacturing. Thus the mining and beneficiation of feldspar is a mineral industry, but the manufacture of ceramic products is not. In the cement and lime industries, processing merges into manufacture, and the line is less distinct. It disappears altogether in a plant that extracts salt as artificial brines, and makes sodium and chlorine chemicals, all under the same roof. The United States is richly endowed with mineral resources. However, mineral recovery by its very nature, involves a destructive process, Figures 1 and 2. In the past, mining practices were all too often conducted with the purpose of removing minerals by the simplest and cheapest method possible, without plans for the preservation of land, water, and air, and with too little consideration for the rights of others. A mining company is in business to make a profit, but every company, regardless of the nature of its business, has moral obligations to reduce its undesirable effects on the environment and to safeguard the rights of others. The problem of environmental degradation caused by surface mining is widespread and serious. Minerals in some form occur in each of the 50 States and several States are extensively mined. Data on the acreage disturbed in the United States, by commodity and State are presented in Table 1. Thirty-one States have laws regulating surface mining, (Table 2). Briefly reviewed in Appendix A-1 are the basic provisions of State laws governing surface mining. It can be seen that these laws vary considerably from State to State owing largely to the mining conditions within that State. Of the 24 coal-producing States, only three (Alaska, Arizona, and Utah) do not regulate strip mining. Even the states that are often cited as models of comprehensive regulations still have problems minimizing environmental damages. Uncontrolled surface mining presents a situation as critical to the well-being of the society as any it has ever faced. Many mining activities have imposed huge social costs on the public at large. These costs are long-range and are in the form of stream pollution, floods, landslides, loss of fish and wildlife habitats, unreclaimed land, erosion, and the impairment of natural beauty. In a 1965 Department of Interior study,(1)it was estimated that of the 25,000 miles (1+0,225 kilometers) of contour bench in Appalachia, approximately 1,700 miles (2735 kilometers) are affected by massive landslides. Additionally, 1+800 miles (7723 kilometers) of streams and 29,000 surface acres (11,716 hectares) of impoundments and reservoirs have been seriously affected by coal strip mining operations in the United States.

Although not immune from the problems affecting the U.S. economy generally, the mineral industry in 1991 contributed nearly $300 billion in the value of processed materials of mineral origin. Supporting this contribution, the Bureau of Mines continued the research and analytical programs highlighted in this annual review. Featured in 1991 were such relatively new programs as minewide monitoring applications in ground control and advances in processing of ceramics and composites, along with more traditional research into health, safety, and mining technology, minerals and materials science, and environmental technology. Under Bureau sponsorship, a National Minerals Policy Forum brought together some 200 executives from industry and Government concerned with minerals policy to begin a dialogue on developipng a policy statement on current minerals issues. A major feature of the forum was the keynote address by Secretary of the Interior Manuel Lujan, Jr.

Mine ventilation can be broadly defined as the branch of mining engineering primarily concerned with the controlled flow of air through mine airways to maintain an acceptable atmospheric environment wherever men work or travel underground. Martinson (1976) has defined three elements of mine ventilation, 1) an engineering element concerned with establishing quality control (removal of dust and gases), quantity control (regula¬tion of air direction and magnitude) and climatic conditioning (temperature-humidity control), 2) a biological element in which an understanding of biological response is used in assessing the mine environment, and 3) a philosophical element requiring judgements as to the degree of risk or worker discomfort that is socially acceptable. Most texts on ventilation, such as Hartman (1961), limit themselves to a discussion of the engineering element. Although also limiting his text to engineering control, Weeks (1928) thoughtfully addresses the other elements in the preface of his book where he states: "Life is brief and happiness elusive under the best of conditions; so beside the commercial aspect must be placed the humanitarian. Is it not reasonable that the operator should give his men a chance to spend their working hours in a comfortable environment, with the danger of sudden death or disability reduced as much as possible?" The statutory requirements of ventilation are, in most countries, established on the basis of biological response as determined by basic research or are dictated by social awareness, often touched off by major disasters, resulting in demands on regulatory bodies for more stringent requirements. 1. THE SCIENCE OF MINERALOGY treats of those inorganic species called minerals, which together in rock masses or in isolated form make up the material of the crust of the earth, and of other bodies in the universe so far as it is possible to study them in the form of meteorites. 2. Definition of a Mineral. - A Mineral is a body produced by the proc¬esses of inorganic nature, having a definite chemical composition and, if formed under favorable conditions, a certain characteristic molecular structure which is exhibited in its crystalline form and other physical properties. This definition calls for some further explanation. First of all, a mineral must be a homogeneous substance, even when minutely examined by the microscope; further, it must have a definite chemical composition, capable of being expressed by a chemical formula. Thus, much basalt appears to be homogeneous to the eye, but when examined under the microscope . in thin sections it is seen to be made up of different substances, each having characters of its own. Again, obsidian, or volcanic glass, though it may be essentially homogeneous, has not a definite composition corresponding to a specific chemical formula, and is hence classed as a rock, not as a mineral species. Further, several substances, as tachylyte, hyalome¬lane, etc., which at one time passed as minerals, have been relegated to petrology, because it has been shown that they are only local forms of basalt, retaining an apparently homogeneous form due to rapid cooling. Again, a mineral has in all cases a definite molecular structure, unless the conditions of formation have been such as to prevent this, which is rarely true. This molecular structure, as will be shown later, manifests itself in the physical characters and especially in the external crystalline form.

The purpose of this work was to Investigate the rate at which coal is delivered from the underground working face by gathering arm type loaders as employed on continuous mining machines, to identify the factors - geometrical , geological, mechanical, or procedural - which affect the delivery rate, and to develop quantitative rate-descriptive equations for the loading function. The mathematical techniques employed were factor analysis and multiple linear regression. It was determined that the coal-cutting function of the continuous mining machine is the factor that primarily Influences the loading function The geometrical factors -the dimensions of the work area In relation to the dimensions of the mining machine -were the factors of secondary influence. Fifty-five percent of the experimental variation in the loading function was explained in terms of the six most prominent Independent variables. It is expected that this work will be useful In operations-research studies as applied to underground coal mining, and with refinement will enable mine planners to select equipment based on the operating characteristics of the equipment and the mining conditions.

Acid pollution from abandoned mines causes serious contamination of major streams in coal mining areas. In Pennsylvania alone it is estimated that 3000 miles of streams are devoid of fish and plant life because of coal mine effluent.1 The pollution arises because water and oxygen react with iron sulfide in the mine cavity to produce sulfuric acid and iron sulfate, which later find their way back into surface streams. Two general approaches to the problem are possible: (1) prevent the acid-forming reaction from taking place, (2) treat the acid mine water after it is formed so that it will not be harmful to the ecology when discharged into streams and other surface waters. The work described in this report belongs in the first category - it was based on the assumption that acid formation in the mine cavity can be prevented by keeping water (one of the reactants) out of the mine. This was to be accomplished by-forming a waterproof seal over the mine cavity which would prevent the seepage of surface water into the mine. It was planned to form such a seal at or near the surface of the ground by applying latex to the soil. Ideally a dilute latex would be applied to the soil and would penetrate to a depth of two to three feet below the surface where it would be coagulated by reacting with a constituent of the soil or by other means., A seal below the surface of the soil would have several advantages over a surface seal - it would not be subject to destruction by traffic, frost or vegetation and, more important, it would allow the use of the top soil for many agricultural purposes. A preliminary feasibility experiment was performed prior to application for the present grant. It showed that it was indeed possible to form a sub-surface seal by means of latex. A core of soil was obtained locally (Wayne, N. J.) by driving a 6.5 cm inside diameter steel pipe about 100 cm long into subsoil for a distance of 71 cm. The soil was retained within the pipe for this experiment. A part of the free space above the soil in the pipe was charged with water, and the seepage rate of the soil after it had become saturated was 15 ml/min under a total head (wet soil plus supernatant column of water) of 92 cm. After the supernatant water had drained completely, 100 ml of 5% rubber latex was added and allowed to seep into the soil. This was followed by additional water and the seepage rate was found to be 2 ml/min under the same head. This seepage rate remained unchanged when remeasured on the following day. Since there was no visible evidence of the latex in the collected drain water it is presumed to have been retained by the soil.

Purification of solutions can involve various treatment methods. In the normal sequence of metals recovery by hydrometallurgy, the ore is initially prepared for leaching by grinding to the desired optimum mesh size as dictated by the leaching parameters. Following leaching and liquids- solids separation, the resultant solution is ready for purification. The use, or introduction of solvent extraction into a plant, can be either a major or a minor part of the metal recovery process as shown by the following list where solvent extraction is normally considered: a) recovery of a metal by a simple leaching of the broken ore, e.g., copper from dump leaching where there are only the three main steps of leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning (1);

At periodic intervals-typically at the end of each month, quarter, and year- the accounting department in each division of a company distributes a set of reports to the division's managers. These reports describe the financial performance of the division and its major departments over the time period. They identify the revenues generated from the division's products and the costs incurred in their production. The results from individual departments are combined to determine divisional results, and the results from individual divisions are in turn consolidated to determine the results for the overall corporation. Cost reports for each of these activities show actual amounts, budgeted amounts, and the differences between the two. This reporting is carried out for the individual period and for the year to date.

This is the final report on Project CR-102 under the auspices of the Department of Environmental Resources, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania .1 The project was activated on January 5, 1970, with financial support from Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., the Pennsylvania Coal Research Board, and the Water Quality Office of the Environmental Protection Agency (WQO-EPA)2 through Grant 14010 EST to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Work on the project was conducted according to the procedures outlined in BCR Research Program Proposal RPP-164R, dated April 24, 1969, and a subsequent Revulsion of Scope, dated February 25, 1970. General The underground mining environment has traditionally been hostile and as early mines were developed, coal seams with particularly difficult natural conditions were bypassed in favor of those more easily exploited. Barring the discovery of new and novel sources of energy, the depletion of petroleum and natural gas reserves will eventually force the United States back to the use of coal as its primary energy source. Figure 1 illustrates the trend away from coal which has taken place over the past half century. Today, the demand for coal requires a re-evaluation of all coal seams to meet the needs of the energy market. Difficult mining conditions may result in an increase in the consumption of roof control materials, require greater investment in pumping and ventilation systems, and increase the need for in-depth engineering of far greater safety in production plans. They may also cause delays in mine development and curtail production, all of which combine to drive up the unit production cost. It is reasonable to expect that conditions will continue to deteriorate as current reserves are depleted, thus bringing this factor into greater prominence in the future. For several years now, it has become apparent that in addition to economic objectives, coal companies must set and achieve several concomitant objectives to accomodate society's interest in the conservation of natural resources. Government action to meet this interest has taken the form of two categories of Federal legislation, environmental protection and employee health and safety. The effects of both of these have not been fully evaluated with respect to the total economic picture, although preliminary evidence indicates that an immediate increase in

The Bureau of Mines is the engineering arm of the Government for mineral resources. Its mission is to carry out laboratory and field studies that will assure the wise and effective development and use of our Nation's minerals, fuels, and underground domain in order to preserve the security and enhance the welfare of our people. Specifically, studies are directed to the means by which current and emerging demands may be met, the real cost of such achievements, and the assessment of related social and economic factors. Ways are sought to fulfill our material needs in a manner that minimizes occupational hazards to workers in the industry, reduces waste, and ensures that mineral raw materials are supplied and mineral-based products are used and are disposed of efficiently, without objectionable social and environmental costs. The headquarters of the Bureau of Mines is located in Washington, D.C. The Bureau's research and development program, however, is conducted at 19 research centers and laboratories located throughout the United States.

THE Bergbüchlein and Probierbüchlein occupy a unique position in the literature of mining and metallurgy, for, they are the first printed books on any aspect of the two related professions. The first printed book on any subject has an allure that may not be entirely warranted by the strict historical significance of its contents. Among the books of the first century of printing there are very few that contain information that was new at the time of publication. Much' of what they recorded had been previously circulated in manuscript form. Printed books are nevertheless of great value because they mark the time when the author's words, free from errors-or at least with the same errors-became available to large numbers, of readers, who thus could easily and cheaply acquire a common background for their future work. Moreover, though there is occasionally some doubt as to the exact year of publication'(as in the case of the present works), it is generally easier to date a printed work than a manuscript, and thus to provide a fixed coördinate in history. The Bergbüchlein, "The Little Book on Ores," is the first printed work in the field of mining. It is an introduction to mining geology, which means that it was not addressed to the practicing expert but was intended to rouse the interest of beginners in the various aspects of a future vocation. It touches on the theories of the generation of ores, introduces and defines some of the most frequently encountered technical terms of the profession, and indicates what knowledge and tools are required for successful prospecting and mining. It also describes the ores of the seven most important metals. For those parts that deal with theory the author accepted uncritically the traditional teachings of the alchemists and the astrologers; his hints on where to find promising ores are based partly on superstition; but, there is enough factual,
