The presence of dust and fume suspended in the freeboard region is a common feature of the operation of direct current (DC) plasma smelting furnaces. This occurs primarily as a result of the use of fine feed materials together with the open-arc, open-bath operation of such smelters, and is exacerbated by the high velocities and turbulent mixing of the gas in the vicinity of the arc jet. Dust and fume losses into the furnace off-gas system can be significant in some cases and may have economic, operational, and environmental impacts on the process. A computational modelling study is presented in which the concentration of dust material was considered as a continuous field subject to a governing partial differential equation. Settling behaviour was calculated as a function of particle size, local gas/plasma temperature, and other physical properties. Development of the coupling between the concentration field and a magneto-hydrodynamic description of the arc is shown, and the resulting models were used to compute various aspects of the behaviour of the concentration field in the arc region for a variety of furnace conditions. Time-averaged as well as transient models of the arc were used to generate the results presented. Qualitative case studies produced several practical suggestions for furnace operation, including increased dust capture by the bath when feed ports are located closer to the electrode, and the possible effects of feed segregation in the furnace freeboard based on dust particle size and density.

A detailed study was undertaken on the effect of Fe+3 in combination with LIX64N during copper electrowinning from sulphate electrolytes. The results show that the presence of Fe+3 not only affects the current efficiency during copper electrowinning but also affects the cathode quality. The effect is enhanced by electrolysis parameters like temperature, circulation rate, current density, etc. No significant effect was found from the presence of Fe+2. The presence of Fe+3 along with LIX64N causes a synergistic effect and results in a drastic fall in current efficiency. Moreover, cathode quality is also affected. A pyramidal structure is favoured in the presence of Fe+3 but the presence of LIX64N along with Fe+3 promotes a ridge structure. Addition of thiourea not only causes modification of cathode deposits, but also a rise in current Efficiency.

Introduction Gold Quarry is one of the largest gold deposits in Nevada, located along the Carlin Trend, approximately seven miles north of Carlin, NV. Owned and operated by Newmont Mining Corporation, as of December 31, 2005, Gold Quarry had produced over 13 million ounces of gold. Multiple simulations were constructed for gold and metallurgical variables using the Stepwise Conditional Transformation method. Analyses of these simulations have been used for a variety of purposes, including an assessment of uncertainty with various ore types. This assessment provides insight for improved modeling and reconciliation. Geological Framework Gold Quarry is a large, low-grade disseminated gold deposit hosted in Silurian-Devonian aged sediments at the Chukar/Alunite-Good Hope fault intersection. Gold bearing hydrothermal fluids appear to have migrated upwards along the Chukar/Alunite and Deep Sulfide Feeder faults and then moved outward along favorable stratigraphic horizons and structural intersections.

Graphite blocks are currently used in the concentrate - slag zone in primary PGM smelters, and can possibly be extended to the matte zone. This project evaluates the interaction between synthetic matte and graphite blocks on a laboratory scale. Static crucible tests were performed where graphite crucibles (prepared from standard and high-grade graphite) were filled with synthetic matte (27.7 per cent S ? 46.1 per cent Fe ? 17.0 per cent Ni ? 9.2 per cent Cu) and heated to 1550°C for different time periods (1?5 days). Matte penetration was evaluated using a SEM, while graphite dissolution was evaluated by measuring the carbon content of the matte with a LECO carbon analyser. Matte penetrated into standard grade graphite up to approximately 2 mm, while matte infiltration into the high grade graphite was limited to the immediate hot face. The saturation solubility of graphite in the synthetic matte at 1550°C was 0.43 per cent. Copper, iron, nickel, and sulphur were detected in an accretion that formed in the water-cooled part of the furnace. This accretion consists of mainly Cu-S and Cu-Fe-S based phases.

The three-dimensional, finite-element technique combined with a progressive failure approach was utilized to simulate interaction between shields and surrounding strata and determine various loading conditions. In addition, a separate finite-element model of the shield structure was made to study responses of each longwall shield to the different loading conditions. Shield responses under various loading conditions and the shield characteristics, such as shield stiffness, the ability of resisting horizontal forces, and the effect of shield height, were studied based on the results from finite-element analyses. The results can provide the basis of effective shield design and be used for evaluation of the shield performance. It is suggested that a technique incorporating the finite-element method be developed to evaluate real-time shield performance for the purpose of effective ground control.

Reactive components of algal cell walls include uronic and alginic acids: In addition, many marine species have half ester sulfate groups which function as fixed anions. Associated metals vary with the media, eg., Ca and Mg in fresh water (FV) and Na, Ca, Mg in seawater. . These metals readily exchange with aqueous phase protons or metal cations. A plot of the total amount of metal cations displaced by protons vs .. pH shows one inflection at pH 4 for FV algae and' in addition a second inflection at pH 2, 3 for marine algae. The first inflection is interpreted as. Indicating the cations associated with carboxyl groups ,and the ,second with half ester ?Sulfate groups. The exchange capacities of various aigal ,species vary widely. When FV algae is placed in a Pb2+ solution,- the amount of Pb2"' deposited on the algae is. Equivalent to the. Total Ca2?, Mg2, and H+ displaced? thereby confirming the ion exchange mechanism. Ion exchange equilibrium constants are reported for the displacement of ca2+ from Vaucheria. With Mg2+, sr2+, Cd2+, Pb2+_ and Na+ as well as the reverse reactions. Cd2+ can .be removed partially from algae by precipitating it as CdS or Cd(OH) 2 Pb2+ and Cu2+ are also partially removed as the hydroxides. Rates of reaction for various alkali hydroxides decrease with increasing .unhydrated cation radius. It is concluded that theory is useful in predicting viable applications for algae in pollution abatement.

Keywords: MgO-MgR2O3 refractory, SO2-containing gases, chemical attack The reaction mechanisms occurring when MgO-MgR2O3 refractories are exposed to SO2-containing gas atmospheres were examined. The study examined the characteristic structures of magnesite-chrome, chrome-magnesite and magnesite refractories exposed to SO2-O2 gas mixture at temperatures of 700°C to 1350°C. The phase characterization was conducted with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results show that the physical characteristics of the refractory matrix along the grain boundaries are important refractory features during chemical attack from SO2-containing gas. Upon heating in SO2-containing gas, the changes in phase-chemical compositions and accompanying grain growth causes loosening of the structure and the pore volume promotes gas diffusion. The chemical reactions that occur form stable sulfate compounds identified as MgSO4, CaSO4 and CaMg3(SO4)4, and lead to disintegration of various phase structures and consequently erosion of the refractory. In conclusion, the reaction mechanisms in MgO-MgR2O3 refractories exposed to SO2-containing gases progress through a combination of structural disintegration and chemical attack.

This report deals with the creation of an efficient method to determine if command, control, communication and monitoring (3cm) equipment in coal, metal and non-metal mines is susceptible to Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) from the Medium Frequency (MF) radio communications system. A qualitative and quantitative RFT test plan was developed for in-mine and laboratory evaluation of the equipment. The laboratory testing was accomplished using the TEM Test Chamber. Detailed information on the Test Plan and the TEM Test Chamber is included. During in-mine testing of the MF System some underground equipment malfunctioned when the transmitter's radiating antenna was in close proximity. Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing was done on three levels; Component (circuit or box), subsystems and system. Nine tables are included which show the results of testing various equipment for RFI.

Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-6 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity,7-9 catalysis,10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated-have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8N0), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by IR spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples17 have used transmission IR spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties, In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18,19 Moreover, according to a recent paper,20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. The paper addresses pipe flows of aqueous medium-sand slurries at velocities lower than the deposition-limit velocity. Laboratory test results including measurements of particle concentration distributions are used in order to describe a flow with a (pseudo-) linear concentration gradient above a stationary bed. Particle dispersion within the flow is evaluated and a stratification-ratio equation is formulated, estimating a portion of contact load in the flow. The formula is incorporated in the proposed predictive model for the hydraulic gradient for a medium-sand flow above a stationary bed.

Introduction Gold mining on an industrial scale is becoming increasingly dependent on low-grade refractory sulfide ores that contain large amounts of pyrite (FeS2) and arsenopyrite (FeAsS). Gold is usually present as sub-microscopic particles dispersed evenly throughout the sulfide matrix. Without some form of preoxidation, efficient recovery of this finely disseminated gold through cyanide leaching is hampered because the surface of the sulfide particle becomes passivated and impervious to penetration of the cyanide. Traditional methods for recovery of refractory gold from arsenopyrite ores include roasting and autoclave leaching. A modem alternative method is to preoxidize the mineral using the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans prior to attempting to re- cover the gold through cyanidation. The bioleaching of arsenopyrite ores presents a problem in the mobilization of large quantities of arsenic, present both in the +5 and +3 ionic states. Dissolved arsenic species pose a dual problem: they are -1 to the bioleaching process itself through inhibition of bacterial activity, and they also pose an environmental threat. The arsenate anion (AsO2) has been shown to be more toxic to living organisms, including Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, than the arsenate anion (AsO43) (Collinet and Morin, 1989). There is some disagreement as to the fate of arsenite in bioleaching solution. Mandl, Matulova, and Docekalova (1992) reported that dissolved arsenite concentration was constant during a long-term bioleaching study of chalcopyrite using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Torma and Oolman (1992) report that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been found capable of oxidizing As3+ to As5+. The solid products of arsenopyrite/pyrite bioleaching include jarosite (MFe3(SO4)2(OH)6 where M can be K+, Na+, NH4+ or H3O+), scorodite (FeAsO4.2H2O), ferric hydroxides, and ferric hydroxysufites (Carlson et. al., 1992; Van Breemen, 1982; Lazaroff et. al., 1982). The particular species formed is a function mainly of pH. Little study has been performed on the effect of solid products on bioleaching. Pesic and Kim (1993) showed that Thiobacillus ferrooridans cells served as a nucleation sites for jarosite particles, which grew rapidly and eventually killed the cell. Most bioleaching studies are performed at low pH&apos;s (<2.0) under uncontrolled conditions. By studying bioleaching of arsenopyrite under controlled pH conditions and at higher pH&apos;s (2.0 to 3.0), the distribution of iron and arsenic between the solid and liquid phases can be controlled, and their effects studied. The objective is to develop a bioleaching process that operates at high efficiency while keeping amounts of dissolved heavy metals low. Pesic, Stohok, and Torma (1993) demonstrated the usefulness of this approach in the leaching of cobaltite (CoAsS) concentrates. Materials and Methods The focus of this study was the bioleaching of arsenopyrite ore by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The parameters studied included the effects of pH, and the effects of arsenate (AsO43 and arsenite (AsO2). pH studies included pH set initially but not controlled, and pH controlled continuously with NaOH or LiOH. Bioleaching results from two strains of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans with different adaptation histories were compared. Bioleaching experiments were conducted in 150 ml stirred glass reactors using a strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans adapted to arsenopyrite ore, supplied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. These bioreactors were innoculated with stock cells grown on arsenopyrite ore for 14-16 days. Typical elemental breakdown for this ore was: As, 9.90%; Fe, 18.60%, Stot, 9.26%; Suifide, 7.50%; SiO2, 25.90%. Mineralogically, the ore contained both arsenopyrite and pyrite. Bioleaching efficiency was measured by withdrawing bioleach solution samples at selected intervals, filtering, and measuring the amount of dissolved cobalt, iron, and arsenic by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Because the precipitation of iron and arsenic at higher pH&apos;s would lead to unreliable results, a 100 mg tracer of cobaltite concentrate from the Blackbird mine in southern Idaho was added to solution. Dissolution of the cobaltite tracer was used to indicate bioleaching of the bulk arsenopyrite ore. The adsorption of dialkyl di-and mono-thio-phosphinates on gold, silver and gold-silver alloys has been studied in the present work. These reagents, which are selective collectors for sulfide flotation, have been found to improve precious metals recovery from ores. Voltammetric studies have indicated that dithiophosphinate adsorbs on gold at much higher potentials than on silver, while monothiophosphinate adsorbs only on silver. However, both adsorb on gold-silver alloys with the adsorption potential decreasing with increasing silver content. Using FTIR spectroscopic measurements, the surface species formed during the interactions of these collectors have been identified. The results of the electrochemical and spectroscopic measurements have been compared with the contact angle data obtained at controlled potential conditions.

The paper presents previously unpublished results derived from an unique interaction moitoring program conducted in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia. An abandoned, sealed longwall gateroad was re-entered and instrumented prior to extracting a longwall face 140 m below it. Instrumentation included piezometers connected to a constant head tank to monitor subsidence, and horizontally mounted extensometers to measure strains associated with subsidence. Survey levelling data was also collected. The monitoring results have allowed a number of significant conclusions to be drawn, all of which were either unanticipated or contradict current mainstream thinking. Firstly, interaction subsidence was less than anticipated. Secondly, the effects of rate of face advance on the development of the subsidence profile are evident. Thirdly, compressive strains are shown to remain in the subsided strata. Finally, strata response to undermining was almost immediate. The impact of these findings on the extraction of longwall panels beneath flooded workings in the Sydney Coalfield are discussed.

Face ventilation and water sprays are the primary controls used on continuous miner sections to protect workers from respirable coal and silica (quartz) dust. Laboratory tests were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the impact on respirable dust concentrations when increasing airflow from 3000 to 9000 cfm (1.42 to 4.25 m3/sec), water flow from 15 to 35 gpm (0.057 to 0.132 m3/min) , and water pressure from 80 to 200 psi (5.52 x105 to 1.38 x106 pa). The effective limits for each control and interactions between these controls were of particular interest. Initial analysis concentrated on defining the impact of the control parameters on the respirable fraction of the feed dust, which was a blend containing 90% coal and 10% quartz. Gravimetric sampling indicated that airflow had the most significant individual impact on respirable dust levels and resulted in reductions of 99% at the operator and 57% in the return. Regression modeling was used to predict dust concentrations at the operator and in the return. Significant interactions were observed between control parameters and often, defined the level for a control parameter where increases above that level did not significantly benefit dust control. Increasing airflow to 8400 cfm (3.96 m3/sec), water flow to 25 gpm (0.095 m3/min), and water pressure to 140 psi (9.65 x105 Pa) typically provided respirable dust reductions at both sampling locations, while optimizing use of control resources. After determining these relationships for the total respirable fraction, selected filters were analyzed for quartz content to define the impact on the quartz component of the feed dust. For the individual control parameters, airflow again had the most significant impact and resulted in reductions of 98% at the operator and 26% in the return. Regression modeling of the quartz concentrations indicated that no significant interactions between control parameters were present. At the operators location, airflow was the only parameter identified as having a statistically significant reduction for quartz dust. A reduction in quartz approaching 95% was observed for increasing airflow to 6000 cfm (2.83 m3/sec). Increases above 6000 cfm had little additional impact. In the return, a linear relationship between control parameters and quartz levels was observed with reductions of approximately 27% predicted for increasing any one control parameter to its maximum level. The synergistic impact of increasing all control parameters to maximum levels resulted in a maximum predicted reduction of 81%.

Using K-oleate as a collector and alizarin red S (ARS) as a modifying agent, selective depression of dolomite from francolite was achieved in alkaline medium (pH> 9.0). Interestingly. ARS was also found to depress igneous apatite in alkaline medium in oleate flotation of apatite and calcite. Adsorption of ARS alone on dolomite was found to be higher than that on francolite. Complimentary adsorption experiments of ARS and K-oleate showed that oleate adsorption was increased in the presence of ARS on francolite but not on dolomite. K-oleate adsorbs on both francolite and dolomite and causes precipitation of calcium and magnesium oleate. Such precipitates can be pre-vented when ARS is present. The results are explained in terms of competitive adsorption for the active sites on francolite and dolomite by oleate and ARS, and their interactions with dis-solved mineral species in solution.

In this paper the main subsidence- ground-structure interactions and an overview of the response of surface structures to subsidence ground movements are presented. The purpose of the paper is to augment our understanding for more effective application of available data as well as to highlight the essential site conditions in building response. The data presented general1 y applies to houses to structures up to 2-3 stories high and no more than several hundred feet in length. Superstructures of these buildings are supported by exterior (wood-frame or masonry) bearing walls with the interior floor loads carried by essentially one row of interior columns. This paper is not directed towards the response of tall buildings, steel-framed structures, or building types commonly associated with schools, churches, libraries, etc.
