Contract required excavating 2,000 If of 14' horseshoe tunnel in rock, a 95' deep work shaft on shore, and a 50' deep intake shaft located in the middle of the Niagara River just above Niagara Falls. Large quantities of H2S were encountered in the range of 20 PPM with ventilation. Peak levels of 40 PPM were recorded. The original designed ventilation system required only a volume of 10,000 CFM to meet OSHA requirements. The volume of air was increased to 50,000 CFM to dilute the H2S to al- low workmen to work and comply with OSHA H2S action levels. The second phase of the tunnel consisted of placing 72" ID X 20 foot long concrete reinforced pipe in the tunnel. When the tunnel was holed through and both shafts were open, a substantial amount of work was required to take place in the shafts which eliminated the possibility of placing a bulkhead to secure proper ventilation. The ventilation team designed a jet system airlock. The design of this system was to bring fresh air down the work shaft in two duct systems; one 30" diameter and one 24" diameter. Following the excellent work of Jan Wolski (7th Mine Ventilation Symposium chapter 58) our design incorporated nozzles located approximately 100' in by the work shaft. The velocity of the 24" diameter duct was 6,365 FPMD2.2 MPH. The velocity of the 30" diameter duct was 6,117 FPMl69.5 MPH. Both systems were on blow and being that air expands at 3112 degrees per side this high velocity of air expanded and created an air bulk head through which men and the large sections of concrete pipe could be passed without any delay or additional cost to the project.

Nonspecific airway hyperresponsiveness is a central feature of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and has been associated with atopy in the presence of environmental exposures such as smoking. Coal miners may develop emphysema and lung function decrements related to their dust exposure. To investigate the roles of airway responsiveness and atopy in these effects, we evaluated the relationships among smoking, a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis, and airway responsiveness (AR) in a group of underground bituminous coal miners and nonmining controls. All subjects had a normal baseline percent predicted FEV1. Increased airway responsiveness was defined as a 15% or greater decrease in FEV1 following methacholine inhalation. 85 miners (45%) and 99 controls (46%) were current smokers, 59 miners (31%) and 55 controls (26%) were lifetime nonsmokers; former smokers were excluded from further analysis. Overall, 25% of 144 miners included in this analysis had increased AR, as opposed to 29% of 155 controls. Thirty-seven percent of both miners and controls had a history of seasonal rhinitis. Significantly fewer miners (15%) had a history of hay fever compared to controls (25%, p< 0.05). Figure 1 shows the prevalence of increased airway responsiveness in miners and controls in association with hay fever. In both smoking and non smoking miners the presence of a hay fever history was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with a higher prevalence of increased AR. Little effect was seen in smoking (p = 0.827) and nonsmoking (p = 0.940) controls. Figure 2 shows a similar higher prevalence of increased AR associated with symptoms of seasonal rhinitis in the mining group. This was significant (p < 0.01) only in the smoking miners. No effect was noted in the controls. These data suggest that the association of a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis symptoms with increased airway responsiveness may be more common in coal mining, compared to non-dusty occupations. Although the implication of these data are unclear, further study of miners with a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis is warranted. In the early 1960&apos;s the feasibility of mathematical modeling was demonstrated in Northern Rhodesia and southwestern United States, where techniques were developed to use these models in a new approach to aid engineers in the estimation of ore reserves, mine designs, and financial evaluations. These rudimentary models closely followed the manual methods, producing ore reserves and production schedule estimates that were as accurate as the manual methods, yet were many times faster. Mines evaluated and designed using these new tools gradually came into operation during the 1970&apos;s and entered the phase at which production scheduling and ore-grade control became day-to-day problems. Management expected the number of operational engineers to be small because small planning engineering staffs had produced the original designs and operated the smaller high-grade pits. Unfortunately, the tools needed by the mine engineer to perform short-term production scheduling and ore-grade control were labor intensive; they had not yet been generally computerized. Several attempts to use the original or exploration model for these two functions were futile. While an exploration model based on data from exploration work proved sufficiently precise for overall mine design and long-term production scheduling, the model lacked the precision required for short-term scheduling and grade control.

Data is now appearing in literature that indicates many current paste fill systems in Canada suffer from plugged lines and severe wear rates. Both of these conditions suggest: design problems with the pipe distribution system, backfill composed of poorly graded material and/or possibly poor operator practices. Problems that can be prevented in the design stage, but still may be readily solvable with current technology. However, if left untreated will lead to an increasing frequency of down time. The compatibility of the distribution system with the paste fill rheology is fundamental and essential for the reliable delivery of fill. Either many mine operators are not familiar enough with the technology to provide a critical review that could foresee problems down the road, prior to construction and or North American designers are not clarifying their designs to their customers. The objective of this paper is to highlight key concepts to mine operators with the purpose of better enabling a critical review of contractor&apos;s/consultant&apos;s designs. There is a great deal of understanding about the rheology of backfill over a range of pulp densities from hydraulic slurry to dense to paste. However, outside of deep mines (especially in South Africa) neither hydraulic or dense fill distribution systems have suffered the problems of paste fill. Paste fill is fundamentally different from hydraulic fill principally in its transportation characteristics. These differences have a direct impact on the design of the distribution system. By understanding the practical implications of these differences the operator can play a more active role in their design while better appreciating how to best operate their own system.

Tunnel Boring Machine Instrumentation A 9.17 m. diameter tunnel boring machine presently in operation in Chicago, Illinois, has been instrumented to continuously monitor and record machine thrust, torque and penetration rate during boring. A micro-processor-based data logger capable of monitoring up to 60 channels of data digitizes and converts into appropriate engineering units the signals from various transducers mounted on the machine. The output from the data logger is sent to a teleprinter, providing a permanent record of measured data. The program control enables the data logger to scan all data channels at desired time intervals. Data obtained to date have been analyzed to determine the interrelationships of the parameters measured. Penetration rate was found to increase linearly with machine thrust with a unit increase in thrust causing more than a unit increase in penetration rate. For low thrust levels corresponding to the initial stages of a boring cycle, the penetration rate was observed to behave erratically until the thrust pressure was sufficiently high for the cutters to establish full contact with the tunnel face. Torque showed a curvilinear increase with machine thrust, reaching the design rating at about 70% of maximum available thrust. No-load torque was approximately 20% of the machine&apos;s rated torque capacity. Overall, the trends observed in measured machine parameters correlated closely with those predicted from experimental and theoretical boreability studies. In summary, the instrumentation system has mett two basic goals. First, it provided extensive and accurate boring data and secondly, it has proven that an automatic data acquisition system can be installed on a TBM and can function under adverse environment.

The Sumich (Victorine) gold mine is located in the Toiyabe Mountain Range on the east side of Victorine Canyon, a north-trending branch off Kingston Canyon in the northwest quarter of Section 27 and southwest quarter of Section 22, T16N, R43E, in the southern end of Lander County, Nevada (Fig. 1). HISTORY Discovered in 1862, the Victorine reached a peak of development between 1872 and 1887. The "Victorine" and "Morning Star" lode mining claims, located on the outcrop of a prominent auriferous quartz vein, were patented in 1869 and 1891, respectively. 1, respectively. Gold ore was mined underground in adits driven, on the level, directly into the side of the mountain. Ore brought to the surface was trammed about 457 m (1500 ft) south on a track constructed along the contour to ore bins. From this transfer point, the ore was moved by aerial tram to the bottom of the canyon then hauled by horse-drawn wagon to the mill located about 3.2 km (2 miles) east down Kingston Canyon. Exact details of the milling process used on the Victorine are lacking, but old reports mention water-driven stamp mills, amalgamation, chlorination, and cyanidation. Gold and silver mill products are reported to have been sent to England for final refining. High-grade gold values of 103 g/t (3 oz per ton) remaining in mine walls and on outcrops, attest to the lack of success in treating the Victorine ore in the early mills. The Victorine mine may have been worked sporadically after 1887 with little success. In 1934, control of the property was acquired by William P. Moloney, an attorney from Marion, OH, who also control- 1 led an interest in the successful Goldacres mine in Lander County, NV. This property was studied, sampled, and metallurgical tests were done in 1934, but no development resulted from this work.

Several types of tunnel supports are being investigated experimentally and analytically at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign under the sponsorship of the Federal Railroad Administration, Department of Transportation. The results of work on two types will be discussed here. These are steel sets and continuous, monolithic steel-fiber-reinforced concrete liners. The latter is a model of a short length of liner that might result from a continuous slip-forming operation in a tunnel excavated with a boring machine. Tests have been performed on both types of support and analyses are being developed which will greatly broaden the scope of the test program. The objective of these studies is to improve the understanding of basic behavior of these supports, and to develop techniques for their analysis. The analyses will then be used to perform parameter studies that will lead to more rational procedures for structural design. The tests provide a check on the accuracy of the analysis and demonstrate the overall behavior and modes of failure. Another part of the project is concerned with the interaction of support and medium, and thus prediction of loads for the supports. These studies are presented in greater detail in a recent report (1). A brief outline of results obtained to date are presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION The following papers describe the extraction of nickel in the form of ferronickel from the Dominican laterites. The Falconbridge process was developed initially in the Falconbridge Metallurgical Laboratories and subsequently in several successive stages of pilot plant operation in the Dominican Republic. In the course of this work we came to believe that there is advantage in piloting on site. Mining, metallurgical and geo-political considerations all have major impact and that belief has been borne out by commercial plant experience. Lateritic nickel ores differ substantially, even within the same orebody, in their amenability to extraction methods. The Falconbridge process takes account of the heterogeneous nature of the deposit. Three years of geological field exploration led to ten years of process development after it was realised that the then known metallurgical processes would not give economical extraction from the Dominican ores. In addition to establishing the viability of a novel pyrometallurgical approach, it was necessary to verify design parameters for a very considerable scale-up to prototype commercial operation. The plant was eventually constructed within the original estimates of time and cost. Unique features contributing to the technical and commercial success of the project are described. Additionally, some bold extrapolation based on pilot plant work, eventually proved to be quite conservative. The mine is not a conventional open pit operation, but is perhaps better characterised as an earth moving job. Novel application of mobile equipment led to great flexibility in the mine, where operation of several mining fronts is essential to maintaining uniformity of ore feed to the plant. Unwanted impurities, present in raw materials, are often coextracted along with desired constituents during leaching. Due to its abundance and ease of extraction, the presence of ferric iron in leach solutions, solvent extraction circuits, and subsequently in electrowinning circuits, has always been a problem. In the case of zinc hydrometallurgical processing, iron is frequently an impurity in leach solutions. Purification of such solutions by solvent extraction, using di (2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) in a kerosene diluent, results in ferric ions being readily extracted along with zinc into the organic phase. Ferric iron has proven difficult to strip from the organic phase, but it is known that ferrous iron may be easily stripped from D2EHPA, and hence a process to effect reduction of iron present in the organic would have great potential. This research investigated a process to directly reduce ferric to ferrous iron in the organic phase, and to strip the ferrous iron using a dilute acid solution. The process utilized metallic zinc as the reductant and a low concentration sulfuric acid stripping solution. The results of the laboratory tests illustrated that iron could be readily removed from the organic phase by simultaneous direct reduction and acid stripping. The reductive stripping process was subsequently utilized in industry at the laboratory and pilot plant levels. The results of the industrial tests were encouraging and demonstrated the potential of this novel concept.

During the past decade, approximately 5 billion pounds of explosives were used annually in the United States. Most of this quantity of explosives was used by the mining industry, with coalmining being the dominant application for explosives. Considering the large amount of explosives used, the accident safety record for the mining industry has improved significantly over the past several decades. Although blasting accidents usually represent a small percentage of the total number of mining accidents, they continue to occur and the severity of these accidents is disproportionately high compared to the other mining accidents. This paper is an analysis and summary of mine blasting accidents over the past several decades as they relate to surface coal mine operations. A compilation and review of surface mine blasting accidents from1978 through 2001 was made. The accident data was examined to identify the trends and primary causes, which continue to be blast area security, fly rock, premature blast, and misfires. Approximately 46percent of the causes of surface coal mine blasting accidents are attributed to blast area security, while fly rock, premature blast, and misfires represented an additional 50 percent of the causes. Accident categories were established based on the cause of the accident or the activity that was taking place when the accident happened. A discussion of the accident data is presented to increase hazard awareness and to emphasize safe blasting practices and MSHA requirements concerning mine blasting operations.

The solving of complex metallurgical flowsheet calculations by hand is, at best, a tedious job which often proves that engineers, too, make mistakes. The high cost and long lead time associated with manual flowsheet solutions have led several organizations involved in research, development and construction of extractive metallurgical processes to search for computerized systems which will solve flowsheet calculations. Although design flowsheet programs have been developed by the chemical industry, the ability to solve flowsheets involving particulate solids is usually overlooked. A new computer applications system has been developed at Fluor Mining and Metals which has been designed to accommodate the type of design flowsheets required by the minerals industry. By employing the sequential modular computation technique, a library of metallurgical pro- cessing routines may&apos; be accumulated which are used by a universal executive system. This technique enables rapid solution of new process) .flow- sheets with only a minimum of additional programming effort. The implementation of the FLEXMET flowsheet solution system is the subject of this paper. Some of the major features of the system which are examined include interactive input data handling, automated flowsheet calculation order arrangement, flexible accomodation of unit operations models and advanced management of recycle and specification control calculations.

The Coal, characterized by coal quality parameters as for example, ash content (Ad), moisture (Wrt), heat content (Qr1), sulphur content (Sd) and other parameters is still in many countries the basic source of energy. Energy is life, especially in modern society, where the demand for ecologically clean energy is very high; and therefore, there is great importance in effective coal utilization Direct utilization - burning of coal for energy generation, is still one of the most effective methods. In most cases, it is one of the cheapest energy transformation methods in spite of the fact that this energy transformation is connected with the deterioration of our surroundings. Deterioration can be substantially reduced if the burning of coal at power stations, heat power stations and other coal consumers is optimized. That means the burning is done in steam boilers, the technical state of which is very good; the coal has minimimum .variations with respect to the projected values; and the burning process is controlled and checked not only from a regulation point-of-view but also from an ecological point-of-view. The instrumentation capable of measuring the characteristic coal quality parameters in real time exists and it forms the basic assumption for the work our research team has made. The proper application of this instrumentation is able to provide information for burning process optimalization. It is the main topic of this paper, which is the compilation of the information on our work -made during the last five years. Sweden is beginning to reap the rewards of a process that has transformed a country with a history of metal mining into one of Europe&apos;s most vibrant exploration regions. Exploration and mining companies from North America, Europe and Australia have joined local firms in the search of gold, base metals and diamonds. This has been due to changes in Sweden&apos;s mining laws in the early 1990s. These changes opened the way for unhindered private sector investment in the country&apos;s mineral industry. More than 20,000 km2 (4.9 million acres), mainly in northern Sweden, is now held under granted or applied exploration claims. Exploration permits diamonds, applied or granted covers more than half of Sweden&apos;s surface. This is a greater proportion of the country than ever before. Major mining companies and junior explorationists are evaluating a geological potential that bears favorable comparison to other major mining centers. Historically, Sweden&apos;s gold re- sources occur in greenstone belts in northernmost Sweden and in association with massive sulfide deposits in the Skellefte district. These are receiving particular attention by exploration companies. In addition, new areas in Sweden are also being explored for gold. This increases the probability that Swedish gold production - already the highest in Europe - will increase in the future (Table 1). Sweden&apos;s recorded mining history goes back for much of the last large pool of expertise in exploration, mining, equipment manufacturing and minerals industry research. In addition, the Geological Survey of Sweden provides sup- port for exploration in terms of data archives, processing and publications. Other benefits for exploration companies are Sweden&apos;s communications infrastructure, its member- ship in the European Union, bringing access to one of the world&apos;s major markets and the high level of educational, technical and language skills held by the country&apos;s work- force. And deregulation of the economy and the introduction of competitive corporate tax rates have made Sweden a favorable destination for investment in Europe.

A number of important international events took place in 2001 in the development and evolution of mineral valuation standards internationally. In Canada, the CIMVal Committee released a draft discussion paper for public and industry comment on principles to guide the development of the planned Canadian mineral-property valuation standard. The International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) received comments on its Extractive Industries Issues Paper. IASB will decide whether the financial statements of public mining and petroleum companies will be allowed to provide the value of mineral and petroleum assets on a current value basis instead of an historic cost basis. The author led the Extractive Industries Task Force of the International Valuation Standards Committee (IVSC) in developing its submission to IASB. IVSC intends to develop an extractive-industries valuation section for its International Valuation Standards, which could support the planned IASB standard. In Australia, AusIMM has carried out an in-depth review of its highly regarded VALMIN Code. The AusIMM&apos;s MICA subdivision organized the VALMIN `01 Conference in Sydney, Australia, with a range of international and current issues papers published in the VALMIN &apos;01 book. Considerable support for the IVSC initiative was evident at this conference. The results of the review of the extractive industries submissions to the IASB were expected to be released in early 2002. The CMMI Congress in Cairns, Australia in May 2002 is likely to prove to be an important forum for continued discussion of the development and implementation of international standards and qualifications for mineral valuation. The outcomes and implications of these events are discussed.

Precambien in age, the phospate deposit under study which outcrops to the south forms a synclinal consisting of only one mineralized horizon. The synclinal strikes SSW/NNE, dips from 30 to 60 NNE and is about 5 km wide. The deposit has been explored by : - trenches and pits about 50 m apart in the outcropping area ; - core drill holes forming lines perpendicular to the outcrop. These lines are about 100 m apart. On each line, the drill holes are about 50 m apart The phosphate layer is clearly visible and has then been defined from the geologicia1 description of drill hole logs. The layer has been divided into two parts : a very rich, altered part at the hanging wall and a poor part displaying opposite physical characteristics, i.e. a fresh and hard rock. With open pit mining in view, the deposit has been divided into a 3-dimension network of blocks, each block measuring 50 X 50 X 100 m. The tonnages of rich and poor ore, PO25, MgO, Si02, CaO and R2O3 grades and the tonnages of barren waste at the hanging wall and the footwall have been calculated for each block. Given the dip of the phosphate layer ranging from 30 to 60° and its relative thickness (between 10 and 15 m), it was impossible or inappropriate to carry out direct calculation by 3-dimension kriging : too many neighboring blocks to obtain sufficient date and impossibility to draw up the morphology of the layer.

Before you begin mining aggregates in Oklahoma, you must first look at the market and ask these questions: (1) Is there a need for additional aggregate production? (2) Can we produce the aggregate efficiently enough to compete? (3) Is the deposit close enough to the market? If you can answer "yes" to each of these three questions, then you are ready to start the process for mining aggregates in Oklahoma. The first consideration to be made is whether the aggregates produced will need to meet state specifications. If you do not want to meet state durability standards, there are numerous formations you can mine and produce aggregates. We will deal only with the formations that will meet state durability standards. These formations are located in the southern half of Oklahoma and in the Tulsa area. Some of the formations that contain limestone, dolomite, and sandstone that will meet state durability tests are West Springs Creek, Kindblade, McKenzie Hill, Butterly-Royer, and Rush Springs Formations. Granite and rhyolite also are found in Oklahoma and can be used as construction aggregates. Once an area has been identified as having durable material, and drilling has verified its properties, a permit must be secured from the Oklahoma Department of Mines, Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, and any other applicable agency before construction of a plant occurs. There are many different brands of crushers available, but all work on one of two crushing principles-either compression breakage or impact breakage. Each type has its application in different industrial-mineral types and the desired end product. A typical small crushing plant would start with a jaw crusher for primary reduction, and then employ one standard cone and one shorthead cone for secondary reduction. One grizzly would be in the circuit with one finished-product screen and three to four finished-product stackers. Natural sands and gravels are found in rivers and old river channels. These too need to be tested to see if spec product can be produced. All of our sand operations have very little gravel; thus, we do not process the gravel. The sand is processed through classifying tanks for gradation.

By-products from mining and processing plants and coal-fired power plants are being utilized more as valuable resources in Virginia. Mining-related by- products are divided into two categories: those generated from mineral extraction and beneficiation, and those generated from mineral processing or from industrial plants. Materials from both categories are produced in Virginia, where by-products have been exploited for various uses in the past and/or present. These materials include coal- combustion products (fly ash and bottom ash), lime-kiln dust, flue-gas-desulfurization residue, rock fines, magnetite, Cold Spring clay (kaolin), Austinville tailings, soapstone rock, and calcium-carbonate paste. Some of these by-products have never been utilized, although several ideas have been investigated over the years.

The Galore Creek copper deposits lie in the Stikine River district of northwest British Columbia, a largely undeveloped region which possesses rugged mountain terrain with deeply incised valleys which support dense undergrowth. Timberline is normally at about 1300 m (4265 ft) and the higher levels contain glacial systems and large ice fields with peaks rising to 3500 m (I 1,483 ft). A location map of the Galore Creek area is given in Fig. 1. In the late 1920s, field parties under the direction of F.A. Kerr (1948) of the Geological Survey of Canada completed geological surveys of the district. Primary access for this work was provided by riverboats on the Stikine and Iskut Rivers. Kerr&apos;s party had to contend with extremely difficult travel conditions that required considerable backpacking, augmented by pack dogs in certain cases. Absence of ground control led Kerr to establish his own topographic maps. Among the geological data established was the recognition [ ] that small bodies of orthoclase porphyry in the district are often well mineralized with base metal sulfides. Copper mineralization in the upper Galore Creek valley, a tributary of Scud River which flows into the Stikine River some 80 km (50 miles) south of the small settlement of Telegraph Creek, was originally discovered during aerial reconnaissance by M. Morrison and W. Buckholz while prospecting for Hudson Bay Exploration and Development Co. Ltd. in 1955. Malachite- and azurite-stained out- crops in several parts of the Galore Creek watershed are clearly visible from distances of 500 m ( 1640 ft) or more. Claims were staked in 1956 and the copper showings were partly mapped, trenched, and investigated by shallow diamond drilling. Because of the remoteness of the area and higher priorities for expenditures elsewhere, no further work was undertaken and most of the claims were allowed to expire.

INTRODUCTION A two-dimensional approach for modeling narrow-vein deposits using the TECHBASE® software was implemented at Sunshine Mining for its use in the evaluation of mineral properties. This 2-D approach prevents the overestimation of high-grade tons typically associated with the use of fixed 3-D blocks and reduces the size of the model in computer memory. The method consists of constructing a two-dimensional model oriented along the average plane of the mineralized structure. This approach works well for single, multiple and intersecting veins with the condition that each vein is roughly planar with variation in dip or strike less than 30" in order to maintain a reasonable resolution in the process of projecting data onto a plane (Figure 1). Also, a precise identification of the hanging-wall and foot-wall location is critical in ensuring an accurate representation of the vein. By using various modeling techniques, the two-dimensional model estimates metal content, thickness, tonnage, economic and dilution parameters which will be ultimately used in the identification of minable reserves. The following is a generic description of the steps involved in modeling a steeply dipping vein. DATA ENTRY A typical project database consists of drillhole coordinates, survey information, assay data and any other quantitative or qualitative data. This database can be created inside the software or imported from any spreadsheet. TECHBASE® utilizes the concept of "fields" and "records" (columns and rows) for storing data. The use of "calculated fields" enables the user to expand on the manipulation of the database with minimum memory requirements. Another important feature of TECHBASE® is the ability to replicate the structure and format of the "tables" for its use in another project and the capability of running a series of repetitive tasks by means of batch and "runlog" files.

Considerable amounts of Fe3+ ions are released into solution when coal is exposed to 1-3 M acid solutions. These ions superficially oxidize the coal surface, and are reduced to Fe2+ ions. When provisions are made to generate the Fe3+ ions in solution, e.g., by inserting an anode whose potential is above the reversible potential for the Fe3+/Fe2+ couple, considerable amounts of mineral matter are liberated from the coal matrix. With many eastern U.S. bituminous coals, this mineral liberation is achieved selectively without significant breakage of the coal. It is believed that this process is induced by the osmotic pressure set-up in the crevices between the mineral matter and coal that are exposed to the solution. A theoretical model predicting the osmotic pressure is presented in this work, along with some results obtained with different coal samples.
