The Colorado Geological Survey completed an inventory of environmental degradation associated with abandoned and inactive mines on National Forest System lands in Colorado. In the course of the inventory, areas with naturally occurring acid rock drainage were also noted. Approximately 18,000 abandoned mine- related features were inventoried, including about 900 features that are considered significant enough environmental problems to warrant further investigation. Water quality data, such as pH and conductivity were gathered at all features where water was present, such as draining adits, seepage at the toe of dumps and tailings, and standing water in shafts. Samples were taken where field tests indicated low pH andlor high conductivity, including several areas with naturally occurring acid rock drainage. Samples were analyzed for dissolved and total metals, and for selected anions. All mine locations and data collected by the field geologists were entered on field forms and, subsequently, into a computer database and GIS format. With the information provided by the inventory, the Forest Service, in cooperation with other agencies, has been able to prioritize abandoned mines for reclamation. In most cases, cleanup is approached on a watershed basis. Mines in priority watersheds have been selected for reclamation first. Watersheds where studies prerequisite to cleanup are occurring include the upper Anirnas River, Willow Creek (tributary to the upper Rio Grande), Chalk Creek (tributary to the upper Arkansas River), the Uncompahgre River, and the Alamosa River. During the inventory, evidence of naturally occurring water quality degradation was found in areas where little or no evidence of mining activity exists. These areas include the upper Alamosa River, the Middle Fork of Mineral Creek, Peekaboo Gulch, and Handcart Gulch. Water from these natural sources has been found to significantly exceed Colorado water quality standards for several metals.

A Mineração da Trindade (Samitri) is a major Brazilian iron ore producer. Founded in 1939, privately owned Samitri operates six mines with a total production capacity of 14.5 Mt/a (16 million stpy). The mines are located in southeastern Brazil in the state of Minas Gerais. They are operating in the iron ore quadrangle, Brazil's primary iron ore-producing region. In addition to iron ore production, Samitri has the capability to produce 350 kt/a (386,000 stpy) of ferruginous manganese ore from two mines, also located in the iron ore quadrangle. Historically, about 70% of Samitri's production of lump ore, sinter feed and pellet feed is exported. Destinations include Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Trinidad and Tobago, China, Turkey and the United States. Alegria Mine In September 1989, Samitri started a new processing plant to treat itabirite, a low-grade iron ore. The goal of the plant was to produce sinter feed (coarse fraction) and pellet feed (fine fraction). Primary separation of sinter feed from pellet feed was accomplished with conventional vibrating screens making a 0.4-mm (40-mesh) cut. The screen oversize was stockpiled as sinter feed. The undersize was deslimed with hydrocyclones and upgraded by conventional froth flotation. Resulting pellet feed grades ranged from 3% to 3.5% Si02. A change in pellet feed requirements by Samarco Mineração SA, a Samitri subsidiary, called for Si02 levels below 1 % and increased production levels. Moreover, market demands called for a change in sinter feed size distributions. Unfortunately, lower pellet feed Si02 levels could not be achieved with the existing process. This was because of the presence of 35% +0.15 mm (+100 mesh) in flotation feed. Flowsheet development. Laboratory and pilot-plant studies conducted at Samitri's research facility found that to achieve lower Si02 levels, the +0.15 mm (+100 mesh) in flotation feed must be kept below 5% to 10%.

The emission of methane in the coal mine working faces has two immediate impacts with regard to coal mine planning. Firstly, at the planning stage, the coal mine ventilation system must be designed such that airflows in the faces keep the concentrations of the gas in faces areas to below one percent. If the concentrations were greater than one percent, the production machine has to be shut down resulting in a loss of productive time. In an extreme case, concentration can reach explosibility limits which may lead to ignitions and explosions. Secondly, in excessively gassy coal seams, several alternatives can be applied to the mine layout configuration, and the mining method to be predicted for the extraction of coal, so as to insure a productive and safe operation. In this study a two-phase, two-dimensional finite-difference model was used to predict the methane emission rates into active mine working area under several methane drainage schemes. The numerical model utilizes a recently developed multi-mechanistic flow theory which describes the flow of methane in an heterogeneous and anisotropic coal seam. Transport of methane in the micropore structure of the coal is described by the Fick's law of dif- fusion under the influence of existing concentration gradient, while flow in the more permeable butt and face cleats (macropore spaces) is formulated by Dar- cy's law under the influence of existing pressure gradient. The desorption of the methane is accounted with the aid of a quasi-steady kinetic sorption model. A series of simulation studies were conducted in a systematic manner by sifting through the parameters associated with the coal seam characteristics and the degasification strategies in order to understand those which most significantly affect the methane emission rates in the face areas during mining. Along these lines, the effects of coal seam properties such as thickness, porosity, permeability, sorption characteristics and scheduling of drainage process against the mining operation have been isolated to understand the role of each individual parameter on the methane emission rates.

INTRODUCTION Due to the current depressed state of the mining industry, many mining companies have been forced to operate at less than maximum capacity. This paper will describe how the AMAX Henderson Molybdenum Mine and Mill near Empire and Parshall, Colorado respectively have utilized operations scheduling and budgeting to achieve production targets at minimum operating costs The AMAX Henderson Molybdenum Mine and Mill have been operating most recently at approximately sixty percent of maximum capacity. OPERATIONS SCHEDULING Production Targets. The production targets are tons, operating days, tons per opera- ting day, head grade, recovery, and pounds of molybdenum. One specific objective of operations scheduling is to meet the production target for pounds of molybdenum. Present market conditions dictate that production be adjusted to match sales of molybdenum. Over-production and creation of molybdenum inventories is unacceptable. In summary, the product ion target for pounds of molybdenum must be met, but not exceeded. Capacity. The AMAX Henderson Mill single stage open crushing circuit capacity is 48,000 dry short tons per day. The AMAX Henderson Mill single stage semi-autogenous primary grinding mill circuit capacity is 38,000 dry short tons per day. All other AMAX Henderson Mi 11 circuits such as rougher flotation, regrind, cleaner flotation, lead leach, filtering, drying and concentrate handling are sized to accommodate the 38,000 dry short tons per day and pro- ducts from same. The tailing delivery system is designed to accommodate tailing from a 38,000 dry short tons per day operation. Constraints. One mill production scheduling constraint is that the mill operating schedule must be the same as mine production, ore haulage and crushing. There is a total crushed ore stockpi1e storage capacity of 240,000 dry short tons. This breaks down to 60,000 dry short tons of crushed ore over the three reclaim pan feeders for each of the four primary grinding mill circuits. However, there is only approximately 10,000 dry short tons of live crushed ore available over the three reclaim pan feeders for each of the four primary grinding mill circuits. Recovery performance may be measured in absolute terms or in relative ones that relate the actual mining outcome to what was expected. Consideration is possible in terms of the control exercised by the operator. The eventual mineral output is the only figure known with complete certainty. The paradox is that, while performance is judged against the sampling, the reverse also applies. The R/Efactor and its four component factors are the best overall measures of performance. The choice of equipment for sampling and mining is very important. The sampling process may introduce errors and the sample density may lead to poor mining block selection. The resulting recovery performance is most visible on a regression curve. Changes in the cutoff grade must also be taken into account to avoid unrealistic production targets. Estimation methods incorporating different mathematical assumptions and techniques may cause over-or underestimation of the grade and volume. If the selective ability of the mining equipment does not match the size of the reserve blocks, the performance will be compromised. The treatment plant efficiency, the throughput rate and the degree of bedrock clean-up also affect performance. The maximization of throughput does not yield the optimum results. Marine conditions, which are outside the operator's control, affect not only operational availability but also performance. Examples are provided from actual operations for various commodities, showing the relative magnitude of the different effects upon performance.

The expansion of surface mining has led to the development of very large off-highway trucks currently capable of hauling payloads in excess of 290t. Mine haul roads have historically been designed empirically, relying heavily on local experience; the trend in increasing truck size will thus render the current pavement systems inadequate. Since truck haulage costs can account for 10%-50% of the total costs incurred by a surface mine, not only would the maintenance costs of existing roads of inadequate design increase, vehicle operating and maintenance costs would also increase prohibitively. There is thus a need for improved design technologies encompassing the construction and management techniques of mine haul roads, appropriate for the wheel loads of vehicles now in use. The aim of the paper is to present the different components of a mine haul road design and management system and to demonstrate the value of its application through case studies. The system has been applied at several South-African surface mines and distinct benefits have been derived. The improved structural design of a new road resulted in a 29% saving in construction costs and also provided better service, whilst the optimal selection and management of wearing-course materials provided better functionality at lower total transportation operating costs.

Crushing and grinding activity in 1989 followed the rapid pace of the mineral industry. Use of existing installations, demand for expanded capacity, and implementation of entirely new operations contributed to a high level of activity. At the 1989 SME-AIME Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, NV, the crushing and grinding session focused on wear materials in crushers and mills. Another session joined the process control group in its simulation-modeling and control of crushing and grinding circuits. Both sessions addressed the optimization in operating effectiveness. Specific subjects covered grinding media wear of forged and cast grinding balls and rubber lined mill liner wear. Also, the Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAG) Mill Conference in Vancouver in September 1989 provided a valuable update on the progress of SAG operations in recent years. Operationally, gold grinding and roasting circuits were implemented in 1989. Freeport McMoRan Gold started up two operations in Nevada. Two other circuits, both using SAG mills, are scheduled to start in 1990. These will be in Nevada and British Columbia. Elsewhere in gold, additional capacity continues to be brought onstream, both domestically and worldwide. In copper, expansions continue to call on additional crushing and grinding units. The unrest at Bougainville in Papua New Guinea has fueled a continued, strong demand for comminution in the copper sector. Specific equipment installed or started in 1989 included the ac variable frequency drive SAG mills in Australia, Alaska, and Papua New Guinea. Also, the gearless drive SAG mill in Chile provides tremendous flexibility in terms of mill speed. The trend toward moveable in-pit crushers continues -even at established operations.

There is currently some pessimism over mixing of net-acid-neutralizing (NAN) and net-acid-generating (NAG) rock to obtain indefinite near-neutral seepage from mined-rock piles. This is due in large part to the lack of well- documented, successful cases of blending and layering, and to the knowledge of unsuccessful attempts. Past work often defined a potentially successful mix in terms of the ratio of net-acid-neutralizing rock to net-acid-generating rock. For example, one case study indicated the bulk pile-wide ratio was approximately 3: 1. Since this exceeded a common ratio used in acid-base accounting, no acidic drainage was predicted. However, acidic drainage appeared within two years. A large part of the ambiguity in mixing arises from attempts to predict success based on a ratio. This paper looks in detail at simple discrete-zone mixing, where at least one truckload of NAG rock is placed in a particular location with no further rehandling or dozing. The lack of acidic drainage in this scenario is dependent on the intervening distance between the discrete NAG zones, along flowpaths occupied by NAN rock. Calculations show that the bulk mixing ratio of a mined-rock pile is not an accurate indication of whether near-neutral drainage can be maintained. For example, a pile with a bulk ratio around 300: 1 could still release some acidic drainage. Calculations also show that the minimum separation distance of the NAG zones (L) can be so great, even with typical NAG and NAN rock, that the mixed pile could safely contain only a few percent of NAG rock, which would not be sufficient for many minesites with NAG rock. The comparison to a more elaborate, computer-based statistical model shows that the simple discrete-zone approach will provide a reliable yes-no indication of whether any acidic drainage will leave a pile. However, predictions of whether combined downstream drainages will be acidic depend on numerous site-specific physical and geochemical factors within and below a pile that cannot be modelled in a general way, like the number of flowpaths and the nature of their intersections.

Traditionally, only the large mining companies have maintained specialist departments in such areas as Rock Mechanics, Ventilation and Safety. To the small companies this has been a luxury that they could ill afford. Any work required by such companies in these areas, more complex than could be handled by the existing staff, was done by consultants. This situation is changing though and there is a need arising for many specialist departments. These changes are partly being brought about by the effects of inflation as the ever increasing costs are causing more and more operators to increase the size of their operations in search of economies of scale. In addition though the plethora of new laws and regulations are creating a need for many more specialists in all areas of mining in order to ensure compliance. The abovementioned factors, added to the existing Pattern of mines endeavoring to improve the working environment for their labor force, both for reasons of practical labor relations and also due to further legislative pressures, have thus created a climate where, in the near future, departments such as Rock Mechanics, Safety, Ventilation, Environmental Engineering and Subsidence Control will be commonplace in mining companies. It will no longer be practical to function without such services. Many mining companies already maintain such departments and this has particularly been true of the big mining groups of South Africa. From the experience gained by many of these large companies with specialist departments, it is clear that the maintenance of a cadre of experienced, competent professionals in such a department has not always been easy. It would seem from the experience gained that one can generalise and state that graduate mining engineers tend not to view specilisation as an optimum direction for their career development. It is of course true that many professionals, especially those with higher than a bachelors degree, do view these areas as valid career options, but even here experience shows that wastage is high. The time therefore seems to be ripe to take a look at this area in some detail to see whether reasons for the problems can be isolated. Working from that some suggestions can be made as to directions in which improvements might be made. If the challenge of the demands of the new regulations are to be met then such improvements must be made.

INTRODUCTION A current need of the phosphate industry is the development of process technology for treatment of high carbonate content ore. About 75 to 80 percent of the world phosphate reserves (1) are associated with carbonate gangue, which is not amenable to treatment by the existing techniques. Numerous laboratory and pilot plant studies have been devoted to carbonate-phosphate separation. Different techniques were involved (washing, sieving, attrition, flotation, calcination, and leaching). For technical and economical considerations, flotation appears to be an efficient process for this problem. Separation of carbonates (calcite and dolomite) from igneous phosphate is applied in industrial plants in Brazil, Finland, and South Africa. But, for sedimentary phosphate, no industrial realization exists at this time, with the possible exception of some plants in China. The main problems with sedimentary phosphates are: • high substitution by CO3-2 and F- for P04 -3 in the apatite lattice. • larger surface area of the phosphate particles because their surface is porous and irregular. • tendency of sedimentary minerals to produce more slimes in conditioning than the crystalline minerals, hence, larger dosages of collectors are required for sedimentary minerals. Investigations reported in the literature indicate that most processes developed for sedimentary carbonate-phosphate separation involved inverse flotation of carbonates using fatty acids as collectors (2), (3) associated with phosphoric acid (4), monosodium phosphate (5), F- (6), or SiF6 -2 (7) as phosphate depressants. Later investigations, conducted by A. Henchiri and G. Baudet (8), (9), (10), (11), (12), (13) in the BRGM technology department, of phosphoric esters revealed that these reagents are selective collectors for carbonate-phosphate separation. The above investigators developed a process which used phosphoric esters to collect carbonate minerals and sulfuric acid or sodium fluorosilicate as depressants for phosphate. Extensive comparative tests for different processes on the same phosphate sample show that the process developed at BRGM is one of the most promising methods proposed for sedimentary phosphate-carbonate separation. It should be pointed out, however, that phosphoric esters make abundant froths. The handling of these excessive froths will be a problem in an industrial-scale plant. This paper outlines test work performed in order to optimize and to improve the efficiency of the flotation process on a sedimentary phosphate ore selected from the Sra Ouertane orebody. The Sra Ouertane flotation process, illustrated on Figure 1, first removes carbonate minerals by inverse flotation and then recovers phosphate as a froth product, leaving quartz as a cell product.

Froth flotation is one of the most actively pursued research and development areas in the coal preparation industry today. Many new types of flotation machines and processes are being developed and compared in an effort to handle the increased quantity of coal fines produced by finer grinding for greater liberation of ash- forming and sulfur-bearing mineral matter. Of the many new machines and processes under development for deep cleaning ultrafine coals, it is quite likely that many will not reach industrial use in the near future; in fact, it is quite likely that some never will. Therefore, it is the objective of this paper to select and describe a few of the new flotation machines and processes that appear to have reached a level of development that would suggest their eventual use on an industrial scale. It is probable, and doubtless will be argued, that some of the selections given in this paper should not have been included, while others should have, but the reader must understand that the author is restricted by the information available. And because most of the information available comes from those who are developing the equipment and/ or processes, it is often confusing and conflicting. Thus with a somewhat moderated plan, the author proposes to point out some in- congruities in the literature in the hope that such information might promote more independent study and perhaps explain the abundant promise versus the scant use of the new equipment and processes described.

Cyclic voltammetry and surface potential (photovoltage) measurements have been carried out on galena electrodes in sodium tetraborate solutions with added HC1 and NaOH to adjust the pH over the range 2 to 13. The first technique shows that the surface species formed on moderate anodic polarization and reduced on subsequent cathodic polarization are the same over the entire pH range. At anodic potentials, a soluble metal species and excess sulfur are formed; at cathodic potentials, sulfur is reduced to a soluble species. More importantly, excess surface sulfur is formed spontaneously under zero current conditions in alkaline solutions. This has been shown to occur on both polished surfaces and on virgin surfaces produced by in situ cleavage under the electrolyte. The photovoltage gives some insight into the charge and potential distribution at the galena surface. This is found to depend on past electrochemical history and the n- or p-type semiconducting character of the electrode and is interpreted in terms of changes in the surface stoichiometry that occur during reduction or oxidation. The effect of surface stoichiometry on subsequent xanthate interactions is discussed.

In 1962, while investigating the tungsten potential in the Thompson Creek area for Union Carbide Corp., Henry T. Eyrich obtained anomalous concentrations of molybdenum (up to 19 ppm Mo) from stream sediment samples collected along Pat Hughes Creek, a tributary to Thompson Creek. Follow-up investigations by Eyrich during the same year disclosed the presence of a hydrothermally altered and molybdenite-bearing granitic exposure in the headwaters of Pat Hughes Creek about 2.4 km (1.5 miles) upstream from the sample point. The altered outcrop measured about 549 by 305 m (1800 by 1000 ft), contained abundant northwest-trending quartz veins locally with molybdenite, and was overlain and surrounded by the Challis volcanic extrusive sequence of mid-Tertiary age. Eyrich's subsequent soil and rock chip geochemical sampling program over the altered outcrop area showed a general increase in the molybdenum content to the northwest toward the postmineral Challis volcanic cover. Over a distance of about 305 m (1000 ft), values in the altered intrusive rock increased from less than 5 ppm Mo to over 600 ppm Mo, with aconcomitant intensity of the hydrothermal alteration pattern. Based on these geochemical results and on preliminar; megascopic hydrothermal alteration studies, Eyrich correctly concluded that the altered outcrop is an erosional window and that molybdenum mineralization of sufficient grade could exist beneath the Challis volcanic cover some distance further to the northwest. His recommendation to test the area of potential molybdenum mineralization with several drill holes was, however, declined by Union Carbide in 1962. The property remained unclaimed until 1967, when Eyrich joined Cyprus Mines Corp. Acting on Eyrich's recommendation, Cyprus immediately staked 26 lode mining claims to cover not only the altered intrusive outcrop, but also the northwest trend of mineralization where it projected beneath Challis volcanic rocks. Eleven of these claims are now patented.

INTRODUCTION In a discussion of South American exploration, it is difficult to know how much area to cover, as there has been such intense exploration for many years in all of the South American countries. Therefore, I have decided to discuss only Argentina, Bolivia and Peru in this paper, since I am most familiar with these three countries. This familiarity has been gained during my last 12 years of nearly continual exploration and mine development. Furthermore, these three countries form a contiguous block straddling the Andes Mountain chain for 2,200 miles in length N-S. Although Chile is part of this block, I excluded that country because it has had the longest recent history in South American exploration, and it is now in a mature stage where new important mines are being placed in production every year. Exploration must progress a lot for the other three countries to attain the stature of Chile. However, major exploration successes such as Yavacocha and Pieriva in Peru, Kori Khollu in Bolivia and Bajo Alumbrera, Agua Rica and Cerro Vanguardia in Argentina certainly indicates that these countries are rapidly accelerating in exploration successes and the resulting new mine developments. Also, by concentrating on three countries, I have avoided making this paper too lengthy. This paper will cover activities of both junior and senior mining companies, both of whom are making significant contributions to exploration. The junior companies often make the initial discovery, develop it further and then bring in a major company when large capital is required. Since most exploration is for gold and copper or combinations of these, most descriptions will cover these types. However, there are significant new exploration successes for zinc and for silver-lead-zinc, and they will be covered, as well. After descriptions of the various properties, there is included a discussion of the governmental policies of Argentina, Bolivia and Peru, as to how they are affecting exploration activities and budgets. Some of these problems could have a major negative affect on the future exploration plans of many companies. I have intended to cover what I think are significant exploration developments in each country, and if a company project is omitted, there was no intention to slight anyone. INTRODUCTION Coal workers' pneumoconiosis and sili- cosis are only two of several diseases which are rlassed as pneumoconiosis. These are respiratory diseases caused by dusts which are inhaled and accumulated in the lungs. The individual particles of dust cannot be seen by the human eye. They are so small that they escape the natural cleansing mechanism of the nose and air passages and make their way down to the terminal air sacs of the lung where they injure the cells and cause the formation of scar tissue. Consequently, if there is exposure to high concentrations of dust over a period of time - usually, a number of years - the amount of scar tissue increases and begins to impair breathing. As a result, the miner develops shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing ad-if exposure continues - this progresses to permanent disability and frequently to death. Death is often due to pulmonary heart disease, the effect of stress on the heart 2s it tries to compensate for the weakened lungs. Specifically, silicosis is an occupational lung disease caused by the accumulation of free silica (quartz) in the lungs. Silicosis is considered the most important form of pneumoconiosis, not only because of its seriousness as a respiratory crippler, but also because of the large number of workers who risk contracting it in a variety of occupations. Quartz is one of the most common substances of the earth's crust, estimated at about 60 percent. Silicosis has been found in coal, metal and granite miners, as well as in other workers, such as sandblasters and pottery makers. Silicosis is also known to predispose the lung to tuberculosis and to increase the chances that a worker will contract chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The seriousness of silicosis was tragically brought to public attention about 50 years ago. During 1932-34, workers were involved in digging a tunnel through rock at Gauley Bridge, West Virginia. While their exposure time was relatively short, they developed silicosis because of the high concentrations of quartz. By 1936, 476 workers had died of silicosis and about 1500 were believed to have the disease (Washington Post, 1982). It is difficult to tell how many coal miners have silicosis. Because x-rays and breathing function tests do not show the difference the type of pneumoconiosis is generally diagnosed by the miner's work history. For example, if a worker

INTRODUCTION Historical mining activities in the Robinson Mining District, in the Egan Range of east-central Nevada (White Pine County), resulted in five open pits (Veteran, Tripp, Liberty, Ruth, and Kimbley Pits), several large mine-waste dumps, and numerous underground workings developed for copper, zinc, gold, lead-silver, and manganese (Figure 1). Groundwater percolating downward through the copper sulfide ores produced a blanket-like supergene zone enriched in copper, which has been one of the primary objectives of mining since the early part of this century. To obtain permits for future operation, an EIS was conducted that evaluated future pit- lake chemistry, groundwater quantity and quality issues, transport of water and solutes subjacent to a proposed tailings impoundment, and the potential for waste dump acidification. AREA HYDROGEOLOGY The mine area is on a ridgeline draining to the Steptoe Valley to the east and to the White River Valley to the West. Precipitation in the Robinson Mining District ranges from a low of 15 cm (6 in.) per year in the valley to more than 50 cm (20 in.) per year in the surrounding mountains. Evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation, leading to a net loss of water from the basin as either surface flow or underflow to the north at Currie, Nevada (Eakin et al. 1967). The White River Valley, which lies to the south and west of the mine area, includes approximately 4,200 km2 (1,620 mi2) of the upper part of the Colorado River Basin. This valley is 112 km (70 mi) long, 32-48 km (20-30 mi) wide, and like Steptoe Valley, evaporation and transpiration exceed precipitation (Maxey and Eakin 1949). The local groundwater flow system in the Robinson Mining District and the proposed mine area is dominated by two main components: (1) a groundwater mound or high between the Ruth Pit and Murry Springs, and (2) a shallow groundwater flow divide that follows the ridge crest south of Ruth, which contains the Veteran and Tripp pits. Besides the alluvium, the main hydrostratigraphic units controlling groundwater flow are limestones, shales, and sandstones, along with the intrusive quartz monzonite stocks. Introduction Ring roller mills are efficient size reduction machines embodying the following machine functions: 1) Size Reduction: from a feed size of 2 in. to various size products as fine as 400 mesh, or granulation from 2 in. to 6 mesh containing a minimum of fines. 2) Drying: fluid bed drying of wet feed materials. 3) Conveying: negative pressure air system results in dust-free conveying. 4) Beneficiation: liberation and removal of foreign materials from the auxiliary bottom discharge simultaneously while grinding. Operation Operation of the roller mill system, Figs. 78 and 79, is completely automatic. A feeder introduces raw material into the grinding chamber in the base of the roller mill at a rate determined by pressure variations within the roller mill as material is ground and air conveyed away. The feeder will be activated by the reduced static pressure and introduce unground material into the system, thereby maintaining a constant differential pressure. Plows located ahead of each grinding roll direct the material upward and between the grinding rolls and the bull ring where it is ground to size. The grinding rolls are free to swing out centrifugally, which forces them to bear upon and grind the raw material. Being free to pivot axially, the rolls automatically assume the proper position for grinding and need no adjustment to compensate for wear. Rotation of the rolls is by rolling contact. Once ground to size, material is swept out of the mill by the controlled air flow from the centrifugal main mill fan. Air suspended, the ground material passing through the adjustable spinner separator. In the separator, an accurate size classification is made which allows product-size material to be conveyed away from the roller mill while oversize material is returned internally for additional grinding. By varying the speed of the separator drive, more or less cyclonic action is achieved at this location, effectively controlling product size. Product sized material is removed from the airstream by the cyclone collector. Typically, a conveyor or product storage bin will be located to accept the product as it exits from the bottom of the cyclone collector.

The Archean ores of Western Australia are in total the largest producers of gold in Australia. In addition to numerous small and medium sized deposits, the province also contains the giant Kalgoorlie Golden Mile deposits. A variety of different gold ore mineralogical associations has lead to the development of a number of different processing routes for both refractory and non-refractory ore types. Intense weathering and lateritization of Archean greenstones in the semi-arid Yilgarn region have resulted in the development of a deeply oxidized profile (60-100m) above most sulphide orebodies. Residual and re-deposited supergene gold within iron oxide/silica gangue of this zone responds well to CIP, CIL, heap and vat leaching techniques. Although gold is easily liberated in principal from oxidized gangue, in practice recoveries are sometimes affected by iron oxide coatings on gold grains, and by clay minerals which can interfere with plant performance. Refractory ore types in the Eastern Goldfields fall into three main categories - pyritic, arsenopyritic and telluride-bearing. Pyritic ores may be either free milling or require roasting. The difference appears to depend largely on whether gold occurs along grain boundaries or fractures, which can be liberated by grinding, or whether gold occurs as inclusions within pyrite grains and therefore cannot be satisfactorily liberated by grinding. Arsenopyrite bearing ores are not well understood and are complicated by what appears to be a variable degree of gold solid solution, in addition to included gold. Gold occurring in complex gold-silver telluride assemblages has traditionally been recovered by roasting in the Eastern Goldfields.

In 1987, the International Agency for Research on Cancer designated crystalline silica as a 2A probable carcinogen. As a result, crystalline silica is regulated under the Hazard Communication Standard as a probable carcinogen at a concentration of 0.1% or greater in the workplace. Crystalline silica will be listed as "reasonably anticipated to be a carcinogen" by the National Toxicological Program. This designation of crystalline silica as a probable carcinogen has created major issues for the mineral and chemical producer, including labeling, hazard communications, marketing a material with potential hazard exposure, and potential liability. The State of California also regulates crystalline silica under Proposition 65 in products as a carcinogen, based upon the IARC determination that it is a probable carcinogen. More federal and state regulations are anticipated as a result of the IARC classification of crystalline silica and its subsequent federal regulation. Respirable crystalline silica has been regulated as a hazardous dust for many years by OSHA. This regulation was initiated to prevent silicosis, another occupational disease. OSHA has established monitoring devices for determining the concentration of airborne respirable silica in order to measure exposure to this substance. The accurate determination of the crystalline silica content is critical to dealing with these health risks and regulations. In the past, crystalline silica was considered to be safe and, because of its ubiquitous nature, little effort was made to determine or quantify its presence in most materials. The Hazard Communication Standard requires that a1l products containing 0.1% or greater crystalline silica must be properly labeled for this material and its hazard. Unfortunately, the 0.1% threshold was not chosen on the basis of established analytical capabilities for crystalline silica, but results from general limits for potentially carcinogenic chemicals and substances. Numerous methods have been developed for the determination of crystalline silica in a variety of products. However, these methods are not generally applicable since they must be specific for silica in any of its crystalline states and not just for total silica content. Chemical tests for silica are not difficult and quite accurate at the 0.1% level; however, in addition to its crystalline phases, it occurs in amorphous phases and in a wide variety of crystalline and amorphous silicates. In general, there is little correlation between total silica content and crystalline silica.

The article presents the concept of the application of the Finite Element Method (FEM) and ABAQUS software in the global monitoring of changes in the rock mass and on the surface of the area, as a result of backfilling the workings. Waste materials applied for stabilizing old mining workings can have a strong influence on the rock mass and surface. According to the regulations, this process should be carefully monitored, especially in terms of the safety of surface structures and rock mass stability. The article presents the concept of an analytic and graphic presentation of the results of the measurements of old workings, applying the Finite Element Method and ABAQUS software in model studies. The main purpose of such interpretation of the geodetic observations results is the application of methods providing wide possibilities to present the geometry of workings, their changes and the influence of the rock mass and surface.
