From 1993 through 1999, Cyprus Amax Minerals successfully completed eight major construction projects around the world. Six greenfield mines were brought into production, an ongoing operation was completely modernized and an environmental issue was appropriately remediated. The projects stretched over three continents: from arctic Russia to the Atacama Desert, from sea level to an elevation of 4,900 m (16,00Oft), from city suburbs to remote wilderness and from a low of US$130 million to more than US$ 1billion. The operations included open-pit and underground mines, mill and leach facilities and involved gold, copper, molybdenum and coal. The diversity of these projects inspired Cyprus Amax to create a "best-practices” project-management protocol to steer corporate expansion in the new millennium. This paper summarizes these best practices, while highlighting the project-management pirfalls to avoid.

The research laboratory of B.U.S Engitec has identified and patented a new process for electrolytic production of lead from lead sulphide concentrates with simultaneous production of elementary sulphur. The process occurs in an aqueous solution, at atmospheric pressure, utilizing a solution of ferric fluoroborate in fluoroboric acid as the oxidizing and solubilizing medium for lead sulphide. After the filtration and separation of a residue composed of elementary sulphur and the gangue which accompanied the concentrate, the solution containing lead as fluoroborate and iron reduced to a ferrous state is sent to a diaphragm electrolytic cell where, in the cathode compartment, the lead is deposited in a compact form on the stainless steel permanent blank. The exhaust solution stripped of lead is sent to the anode compartment where the oxidation of ferrous fluoroborate into ferric fluoroboratetakes place, reproducing the oxidizing solution for new leaching. Depending on operating conditions, it is possible to selectively solubilize the lead from the other metal values present in the concentrate. The sulphur produced from the reaction may be separated from the gangue by extraction with solvent or by flotation.

The ability of various fungal species isolated from gold mines to uptake gold and base metals such as zinc, copper, iron and lead from gold-process cyanide effluents was investigated. Under identical treatment conditions, different strains showed wide variations in their ability to take up gold and other base metals. Aspergillus terreus exhibited as high as a 60% gold uptake. Almost complete removal of zinc was possible with various fungi and with the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Studies at various metal concentrations showed a higher gold uptake from dilute solutions, and studies with Aspergillus niger showed that gold uptake by living cells increased gradually as the contact time increased. Metal uptake capacities between living and nonliving cells were also compared. A waste biomass (ABM- I), obtained from a fermentation industry, wasalso identified as having a high gold uptake capacity. At 5% (W/v) solids, ABM-I could efficiently remove up to 83% of the gold contained in an effluent solution within 24 hrs.

Is the Brazilian gold rush over? Judging from the situation in Brazil over the past few decades, the answer is almost certainly yes. The picture of swarms of Brazilian prospectors or "Garimpeiros" crowding or, more correctly, overcrowding the gold regions of the Amazon jungle using the time-aged empirical approach to gold exploration has finally run its course. There are two fallacies that have lead to a reduction in the discovery of new gold fields in Brazil. The first fallacy is that "Brazil's geology is largely unknown." The extreme depth of weathering and the general lack of understanding of the shield deposits are at the origin of this misconception. The second fallacy is that "Brazilian prospectors ("garimpeiros") are very naive, have very little technical knowledge and can only produce gold at very low recovery rates." This is more of a result of wishful thinking for the purpose of justifying limiting exploration programs than it is a real consideration. In this paper, the author takes a methodical heuristic approach to gold exploration in Brazil and offers this as an alternative to the empirical approach of the garimpeiros.

Over the past few years, the School of Mines of Paris has carried out a program of research* on the grade-tonnage relationships in the border zones of porphyry copper deposits. The initial problem was quite difficult : how does the grade vary at the border of the known orebodies? Does it decrease regularly, or do some thresholds exist, where the grade diminishes abruptly? The answer to these questions have important repercussions on the prediction of the future reserves in the fringe of the orebodies. If the grade decreases regularly, very important reserves could exist; if not, there would be strong limitations to the possible recoverable reserves. The first step of our study was a critical study of previous work done on the subject. It appeared that, following Lasky's pioneering paper (Lasky, 1950), most of the authors used what we can call an historical approach to the problem. In this, the grade-tonnage relationships are calculated from the available figures for production and reserves and the results are then extrapolated to the future. The strong limitation of this model are brought out in this article.

The reaction mechanism for the cathodic decomposition of pyrrhotite in deoxygenated solutions at natural, near neutral pH levels was studied using potential and cyclic voltammetric measurements. Reaction products on the pyrrhotite surfaces were examined by Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES), by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and by analyzing the voltammograms for the electron balance of the reactions. Surface properties of the pyrrhotite/solution interface were characterized using an ac impedance technique. The parameters of an equivalent circuit were determined by the nonlinear least-squares fit (NLLSF) technique. The effect of cathodic polarization on floatability was investigated by performing microflotation tests. Possible implications to the flotation separation of chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite ores are discussed.

Imaging is a fundamental requirement when characterizing minerals, ores and related products. Images are used for presentation, texture analysis, characterization, image analysis, identification, etc. The image mode that is utilized is dependent on the application, mineral properties and available instruments. Different instruments produce images that display different features. In order of increasing complexity they are: hand specimens, a non-polarizing microscope, polarizing optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), low vacuum SEM, microprobe, secondary ion mass spectrometer, staining, cathodoluminescence, tomography and others. Image analysis uses images produced with either an optical microscope or a SEM, but the SEM images are superior in this application. The copper segregation process is designed to concentrate oxidized copper ores or mixed sulfide-oxide copper ores which are refractory to normal and cheaper mineral dressing or leaching processes. Such ores contain copper silicates or highly disseminated copper minerals in a gangue not entirely free from limestone or dolomite. Concentra¬tion by flotation is, under these circumstances, not possible and the acid-consuming constituents do not permit acid leaching. A high temperature treatment at 700-800°C, in the presence of a small amount of sodium chloride and of finely divided carbon, concentrates the copper into easily floated metal by a kind of reducing chloridizing roast. The sulfides, if present, are either oxidized in the heating stage and react like oxides or float with the metallic copper in the flotation step. The ores which have the aforementioned characteristics and which are high grade enough to pay for the treatment are scarce, so that the process has only a limited application. Theory of Copper Segregation Sodium chloride, reacting with water vapor and the acid gangue constituents, produces hydrogen chloride which reacts with the copper minerals. The River Vormbäcken is the recipient of treated AMD from the Kristineberg mine site, northern Sweden, where mining of a complex sulfidic ore has taken place since 1940. Parts of the river flow through different kinds of wetlands. The changes in metal concentrations and water chemistry that occur upon passing these wetlands have been studied by analysis of water chemistry data from a number of stations along the river collected during 11 years of monthly sampling. It is concluded that the impact and functioning of wetlands cannot be elucidated from chemistry data alone. Future studies including e.g. reconstructed water flow are needed.

An important issue in the use of high pressure grinding rolls when grinding ores is wear of the rolls. Due to the abrasive nature of the ores, significant wear rates have typically occurred. Attempts to address the wear problem require a better understanding of the wear mechanisms. A probable wear mechanism is the abrasion of the rolls surface due to extrusion of the compacted material as it leaves the rolls. This paper presents the results of a study on a number of ores to examine the extent of extrusion that occurs. The study involved laboratory, pilot and full-scale high pressure grinding rolls. The effect of variations in parameters such as grinding pressure, rolls speed, initial gap settings, feed topsize and moisture was investigated. The results indicate that extrusion increases with increasing grinding pressure and rolls diameter, while the use of studded or profiled rolls significantly reduces the extrusion effect compared to smooth rolls. It was also found that rolls speed and feed moisture can have significant effect on extrusion, depending on the material.

The Nordhalde is a waste rock pile resulting from uranium mining near Ronneburg, Germany. The pile contains over 27 million m3 of waste rock. Typical seepage water has a pH of 2.7 and a sulfate concentration of 10,000 mg/L. Geochemical investigations of the Nordhalde from 1993 to 1996 included drillholes, test pits, ABA and metals analyses, column tests, and a detailed review of the construction history of the pile. In 1996, eight drillholes were instrumented for monitoring oxygen and temperature. Monitoring continued for a fill year. Hourly temperature and pressure readings were taken by automated data recorder. Oxygen concentrations were measured three times per week, and periodic gas samples were obtained for complete analysis. The resulting data set is believed to be one of the most comprehensive of its kind. Effects noted elsewhere, such as thermal convection, are evident. However, unlike other data in the literature, the NordhaIde data shows a strong seasonal effect, with convection dominating oxygen transport only in the winter months. Analysis of the data allowed the amount of contaminants associated with ongoing and historical oxidation to be compared, and results were used to assess the potential effectiveness of proposed remediation measures.

During the past 12 years, use of longwall methods to mine coal in the United States has continually in- creased. Although these methods offer several advantages, health hazards often exist because of unique and difficult problems in the control of respirable dust. This paper discusses the results of respirable dust studies conducted on United States longwall mining operations in 1972and 1978. Current engineering control methods (ventilation, water application and use of machine cutting parameters) and administrative controls for minimizing employees' respirable dust exposures are discussed.

A detailed study of ponding phenomenon relative to surface subsidence due to longwall mining was conducted for various surface stream conditions. Based on field monitoring, the stream-ponding process and three forms of stream water are described. Also discussed are the criteria of stream ponding and the influences on the ponding process by two key factors: the angle of stream flow and the change in the stream-bed gradient. A numerical (mathematical) model, which combines trend surface technique that describe the topographical features in the vicinity of a stream and the modified influence function, which represents the profile of the surface subsidence trough (or basin), is constructed to predict the formation characteristics of stream ponding in terms of location, boundary and accumulated water volume of migratory and stationary ponds produced by the stream-ponding process. Three cases are analyzed using the model to predict the interaction of the underground operations and the environmental impact due to stream ponding. The feasibility of various mitigative measures are assessed.

Performance assessments are carried out to monitor operations, to evaluate performance and to identify processing problems. The assessment involves collecting and analyzing representative samples from critical points in a flowsheet and interpreting the data. Sample analysis techniques include chemical analyses, mineralogical investigations, mineralogical analyses, and materials balancing. Chemical analyses provide the lowest cost assessment and should be used liberally, particularly in monitoring a process. Materials balances performed on chemical assays for a suite of samples are used as a first step in evaluating a process. Mineralogical investigations are more expensive than chemical analyses but need to be used only at the beginning of mining and metallurgical operations and as a second step in assessing processing problems. Quantitative mineralogical analyses combined with materials balancing provide the most complete performance assessment, but the procedure is expensive. On the other hand, the assessment has the potential of a large payback when carried out where warranted.

INTRODUCTION Fluorspar is the common term used for the mineral fluorite, which is naturally occurring calcium fluoride (CaF2). It is the principal source of fluorine, the most reactive of the chemical elements, from which a great variety of unique and strategically important chemicals are produced. Commercial deposits of fluorspar are widespread throughout the world, and its availability is essential to the industrial progress of all nations. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY In its pure form fluorspar, CaF2, contains 51.1% calcium and 48.9% fluorine, and has a sp gr of 3.18 and a hardness of 4. It is commonly a glassy mineral. colorless, white, or grayish. but may also be various shades of purple, pink, blue, green, yellow, or tan. It belongs to the cubic system mineralogically, and commonly crystallizes into cubic shapes in vugs and cavities, although most of it is massive, with interlocking crystals. This paper reviews the development of the David Bell Mine, from early exploration, through discovery, construction, start-up, underground development, and production. Details are provided regarding the mine development, the mechanized cut and fill stope production, the proposed long-hole stoping with delayed backfilling mining method for the lower levels and the cyanide leach carbon-in- pulp concentrating process. The mine development remains on schedule and under budget with results very much as predicted in the feasibility study.

As part of its research program on column flotation, the Bureau of Mines, Salt Lake City Research Center has performed studies on (1) column flotation amenability and comparison with conventional flotation results for over 15 mineral systems, (2) alternative methods for improving column bubble generation systems, (3) mineral behavior within a column, and (4) the effect of changes in column operating parameters on flotation grade and recovery. Based on results from these studies, flotation columns (1) are capable of producing higher grade concentrates in fewer stages than conventional flotation cells at equivalent or increased recoveries, (2) require less retention time than conventional flotation cells, and (3) can be divided into cleaning and collection zones that have characteristic mineral-upgrading-per-foot values. Attempts to improve the column air sparger have led to the development of a superior external bubble generation system, which can (1) achieve increased air holdups. (2) produce bubbles from 400 Um to 4,000 Um average bubble diameter with minimal frother addition, (3) provide superior bubble size control, and (4) be maintained without column shutdown. Efforts are continuing to improve column flotation and transfer successful technology to industry.

INTRODUCTION Underground gold mining operations are found in South Africa, U.S.S.R., Canada, the United States, Zimbabwe, Ghana , Brazil. Australia, China and many other countries. The methods used for extraction differ from highly mechanized trackless mining in the developed countries to the labour intensive systems of the third world nations. The climatic conditions in which mines are situated vary from equatorial to arctic. The rock temperatures and the depth of workings also vary significantly from shallow to extreme depth. The Western Deep Levels mine in South Africa is the deepest and exceeds 4.000 metres in depth with strata temperatures above 55°C. These major differences between mining fields result in significantly different ventilation problems in underground gold mines. The ore types also vary and some deposits have high silica contents while other mines extract sulphide ores. Methane may also be encountered in underground gold mines and can have a large influence on the ventilation practice. Preparation for flotation begins with dragline mining, pumping, washing, screening, and desliming. Slimes, nominally -150 mesh material, constitute large quantities of phosphate and water which are a disposal problem. Older techniques involve sizing at about 35 mesh for separate coarse and fine treatment. The plus 14 mesh fraction does not require concentration. Coarse treatment includes agglomerate spiralling, belt flotation, thickening, scrubbing with sulfuric acid, de-oiling for reagent removal, and cationic flotation of fine quartz. A recent trend is to screen at coarser than 35 mesh size and eliminate coarse particle treatment, sacrificing some grade of this product. Techniques for flotation concentration of the fine size fraction are discussed.

In this paper, the authors outline the deficiencies of PERT/CPM as a method for scheduling complex projects such as mine development. In particular, PERT/CPM networks cannot accommodate logical nodes (events) or stochastic branches (activities). The Graphical Evaluation and Review Technique (GERT), developed by Pritsker and. co-workers, is introduced as an alternative to PERT/CPM that overcomes many of the deficiencies of the latter and enables a more realistic analysis of complex projects that are subject to significant uncertainties. A brief overview of GERT network structures and network analysis is given and a PC implementation of the method is described. The technique is illustrated by application to the development of an open-pit gold mine in Saudi Arabia.
