The coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) has been considered as the most serious health problem in the coal mining industry. The development of CWP in a worker lung depends on the average concentration and toxic components of the coal dust and the exposure length. Toxicity studies on coal dust shows the bio-available iron (BAI) in the coal dust plays an adverse role in the CWP development. It is also found that presence of calcite in the coal seams can significantly reduce the CWP cases as evidenced by the significant difference between the coal miners in the western and Appalachian coal regions. Based on this finding, it is proposed to artificially introduce calcite to BAI -containing coals in the effort to mitigate the CWP disease in coal industry. This paper introduces the scientific bases, the main geological factor that makes the differences, the proposed methods to introduce calcite to coal dust or to coal seams. Feasibility for the proposed methods is also discussed.

Federally owned mineral deposits generally fall into one of three categories: (1) minerals locatable under the General Mining Law of 1872; (2) minerals leasable under the Mineral Leasing kt of 1920; and (3) minerals salable under the Materials Act of 1947. Unlike valuable deposits of gold, silver, copper, iron, lead, etc., which may be locatable, industrial minerals are acquired through a variety of methods depending on use, composition, and date of acquisition. Table 1 may be used to establish the method of acquisition for most industrial minerals.

The West Side CSO Tunnel, Pump Station & Pipeline Project is currently beginning construction along the downtown waterfront of Portland, Oregon. This4.3 meter diameter, 5,500 meter-long soft ground tunnel will be driven along the westbank of the Willamette River adjacent to buildings and utilities and several major pile-supported bridges. High groundwater pressure, extended lengths of gravel to cobble-size alluvium, and the need to control ground loss and surface settlements were key considerations in the selection of slurry tunnel boring machines for the project This paper presents an overview of the numerical modeling that was performed during design to estimate the strains and additional loads in the pile-supported structures and to assess the efficiency of proposed mitigation measures.

Mining is a very important economical activity in Peru which has been recently developed without considering environmental aspects. Here, we show an experience at the Milpo mine, situated 4,200 meters above sea level; a mining company that has the value of being one of few from the last decade that is engaged in consolidating a model of environmental protection. The model includes aspects of contamination prevention and control, with bioindicators such as pasture cultivation, vegetables, forests, and hydrobiological species breeding. Socially, through means of development programs in natural areas, forestation and support to rural agriculture, together with environmental education, it is being demonstrated that it is possible to ensure tangible results in environmental conservation and the well-being of the populations around the mine.

The Barneys Canyon orebody is a sediment-hosted disseminated gold deposit located 8 km (5 miles) north of the Bingham Canyon porphyry copper mine. Mineable oxide reserves are 8.6 million tonnes (9.5 million short tons) grading 1.64 g/tonne (0.048 oz/ton) gold. Host lithologies are carbonates and siliciclastics of the Park City and Kirkman-Diamond Creek Formations of Lower Permian age. Gold distributions are controlled by favorable stratigraphic units and associated alteration, and structures. Dominant alteration is decalcification and bleaching of carbonates, and argillization and bleaching of sandstones. Gold to silver ratios are greater than 1:1. Anomalous trace metals include arsenic, antimony, mercury and thallium. The Melco deposit lies 2.4 km (1.5 miles) southwest of the Barneys Canyon deposit. It is spatially associated with a steeply northwest-dipping siliciclastic breccia in the Kirkman-Diamond Creek Formation at the contact with underlying orthoquartzites of the Freeman Peak Formation. Both gold-bearing oxidized and sulfide lithologies are present, often in sharp contact. Mineable oxide reserves are 2.8 million tonnes (3.1 million short tons) grading 2.40 g/tonne (0.07 oz/ton) gold. Anomolous trace metals include arsenic, antimony, mercury and thallium, which are generally present in concentrations greater than those at Barneys Canyon, particularly in sulfide-bearing material. A spatial, temporal and genetic relationship is proposed between the Melco deposit and late-stage gold mineralization at Bingham Canyon, although both the Melco and Barneys Canyon deposits have many similarities to Carlin-type gold deposits.

A historical background of the development of automated material balance packages is presented including a summary of currently available packages and a description of the present work at the Mineral Resources Research Center of the University of Minnesota. A brief mathematical statement of the problem is given and solution techniques discussed. The problems and difficulties normally associated with material balances, both hand calculated and computer calculated are described. Several aspects of the available material balance packages as related to the "user/computer" interface are evaluated in detail. Elements of the material balance packages that affect the solutions are examined and the relative performance of the main packages on specialized problems presented. Finally, areas associated with automated material balances that require further work before computer packages can be widely used in industry are outlined.

A chartered bus with about 30 attendees of the just completed 1998 SME Annual Meeting headed toward Green Cove Springs, FL, which the author had been told was located somewhere south of Jacksonville, FL. In conjunction with the meeting in Orlando, RGC (USA) Mineral Sands provided a tour of its facility. The author had worked with heavy minerals on a laboratory scale, performing the usual gravity and magnetic separations, but had never been to a heavy mineral mine and processing facility. Years ago as a metallurgist, the author once applied for a job in a heavy mineral operation in Florida -it may have been the same operation. After turning north on to Highway 95, the endless billboards promoting beach-front retirement communities proved the Atlantic ocean was just a few miles away (although the author never caught a glimpse of it). After another hour, the bus suddenly turned west and continued inland for about 65 km (40 miles). The thought occurred, "We are talking about beach sands, what are we doing heading away from the ocean?" As the bus continued inland, the author was struck by the flatness of the land and by the lakes, rivers and wetlands. He was also impressed by the many fine stands of pine and hardwoods. The office of RGC (USA) Mineral Sands is located about 16 km (10 miles) south of Green Cove Springs. Upon leaving the bus, members of the tour were greeted by Graeme Sloan, general manager, and Elliot Mallard, manager of mining. They provided some general information about the operation, including a slide show. RGC's Florida operation produces four concentrates: zircon (ZrSiO,), rutile (TiO,), ilmenite (FeTiO,) and leucoxene (an alteration product of ilmenite containing 67% to 70% TiO,). With a work force of about 170, the annual production of the above products is about 23,27, 45 and 14 kt (25,000 30,000 50,000 and 15,000 st), respectively. RGC also has other mineral sand operations, in addition to gold and base metal mines, mostly in Australia.

In May, 1966, the General Services Administration (GSA) announced a program to encourage additional domestic production of copper in the interest of national security. Upon learning of the copper production expansion program, Duval Corporation entered into negotiations with GSA for development of the Sierrita copper-molybdenum property under the program. Agreements between the GSA and Duval Sierrita Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Duval Corporation, were concluded in 1967, with the Sierrita Concentrator beginning operation in 1970 at a designed capacity of 72,000 STPD. Subsequent additions and modifications have expanded capacity to 90,000 STPD. This property, located approximately 20 miles south of Tucson, Arizona, represents an investment including working capital of about $200 million. These funds were provided from an $83 million loan from GSA, repayable in copper valued at 38 cents per pound, $48.75 million of bank loans subject to U. S. Government V- loan guarantees, and Company capital contributions. Current general operating statistics for the concentrator are listed below: Ore Grade 0.32% Cu., 0.030% Mo. Kwanyin Tunnel is presently the longest (7.7 km) railway tunnel in Taiwan. Due to heavy railway traffic, a pass-by station will be built inside the tunnel to increase the traffic flow. Since the concentration of toxic gases released by the locomotives may reach dangerous levels, a research program was conducted for the purpose of designing a ventilation system which could dilute and/or remove the toxic gases to maintain an acceptable pollutant level. The program consisted of two parts. The first part was field measurement during which the concentrations of pollutants and wind velocities were measured at various points inside the tunnel to acquire basic data regarding ambient air quality, piston effects for the different types of trains, and existing ventilation conditions. Weather data (temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind direction and velocity) were gathered at many stations, both on the surface and inside the tunnel. The amount of pollutants released by each type of locomotive for various conditions were also measured. The second part of this study involved establishing mathematical models for predicting the air quality of the various proposed ventilation systems. Three different models were used for this work. The first one is a piston effect model which assumes that the gases and air undergo immediate mixing inside the tunnel. The second one is also a piston effect model which assumes that the diffusion ability of the gases is zero. The third one is a conventional ventilation model which was used for natural and mechanical ventilation conditions. From the result of field measurement and mathematical model studies, a ventilation system was chosen with consideration of both ventilation effects and construction costs.

Silicon oxynitride, Si2N20, has many of the intrinsic properties of a potential high temperature engineering ceramic material. Some of these properties are similar to those of silicon nitride, which has been more intensively studied. However, although silicon nitride ceramics are approaching a state of microstructural refinement for various engineering applications, silicon oxynitride has received little attention. This has been mainly due to a lack of an economical and reproducible method of producing pure crystalline Si2N2O. Several reports exist on the preparation of crystalline Si2N2O from SiO2 and Si3N4, yet very little kinetic data exist. Even less is known about the carbothermic reduction of SiO2 in a nitrogen atmosphere to produce Si2N2O. In this paper, a review of the properties and methods of preparing silicon oxynitride will be presented. In addition, results obtained by reactively sintering SiO2 and Si3N4 will be discussed. Today, approximately 31% of underground coal mining operations have designated occupations or areas with more stringent (below 2.0 mg/m3) respirable dust standards in place. Many U.S. coal mines have been able to maintain compliance with very low dust levels, and the Bureau of Mines, in an effort to identify those factors contributing to low dust levels, completed a survey of twelve continuous miner sections which were able to maintain their dust levels at or below 0.5 mg/m3. The quantity and quality of face ventilation appeared to be the most important factor in controlling dust exposure. The results directed Bureau research towards identifying improved face ventilation techniques for reducing quartz dust levels on continuous mining operations. This research has involved the evaluation of a half-curtain face ventilation technique which reduces the cross-sectional area of the entry, thus increasing the air velocity over the operator. The Bureau has also conducted extensive laboratory studies to compare tubing versus brattice, including an evaluation of both systems in a crosscut turn. In an effort to improve ventilation and reduce dust exposures of roof bolter operators working downwind of the continuous mining machine, the Bureau has evaluated two novel face ventilation systems. The first system consists of a fan discharge tubing technique which routes dusty air away from the return entry being bolted. In a technique similar to the fan/tubing concept, exhaust air from the upwind continuous miner face can be scrubbed using a dust collector to capture a portion of the dusty air, clean it, and supply it to the bolter operators as a split of clean intake air. A better understanding of face ventilation techniques should lead to solutions to the problem of more stringent dust standards due to quartz.

Intensive ventilation is required during the excavation of a mine opening and the subsequent exploitation of the mineral resources. The exchange of heat between the ventilation air and the rock mass has a major influence on the thermal regime of a mine, especially in the initial segment of the airway. In frozen ground, heat flow into the rock mass from the ventilation air can result in the eventual thawing of the permafrost, which can result in roof-rock instability. This paper presents a mathematical analysis of the dispersion process of ventilation-induced heat by thermosyphons placed on the surface of the mine. The principal uses of thermosyphons in the Arctic are to reduce the ground temperature to prevent potentially unstable permafrost from thawing and to increase the bearing strength of the material. The mathematical model of the physical problem, generally known as "the Stephan problem," takes into account the varying thermo-physical properties of air and the frozen and thawed rock mass, the thermal properties of the freeing fluid in the thermosyphons and the phase change of water. Finite-difference techniques were employed to determine the temperature isotherms around the thermosyphons. It was found that two rows of thermosyphons on a 10- x 10-m grid provide an acceptable design spacing for reducing the ground temperature around the mine airway.

Considerable movement is afoot internationally to rationalize standards and regulations relating to valuations and the qualifications for valuation professionals. In July 2000 the International Valuation Standards Committee released expanded standards, and additional important improvements are planned by 2003. Possible updates to the International Accounting Standards (IAS) and potential adoption of IAS by the United States could significantly impact minerals appraisers. Standards designed specifically for mineral asset valuation are under development in Canada and the United States, with Australia's internationally respected VALMIN Code providing the benchmark. In the United States, the all-encompassing Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) is annually modified and continues to gain deeper acceptance, while the SEC holds fast to its 1981 rule prohibiting reporting of a quantitative estimate and value for non-reserve mineralization. Some important international trade agreements are driving actions to free the trade in professional services. In July 2000, an international workshop was held to initiate discussion on minimum qualifications for appraisers to work internationally. Pressure for uniform minimum qualifications and rules for professionals internationally will continue to build. The United States is historically among the slowest countries to implement such initiatives, with its state level licensure barriers having the potential to cause some of its professionals to be stranded in an international backwater. Structural change is needed in Australia's VALMIN Code to remove conflict with the latest International Valuation Standards. The mineral valuation standards developers of Australia, Canada and the United States should work jointly on updating VALMIN for global use.

Results of an electrochemical study using carbon paste electrodes of pyrite and pyrrhotite samples suggest that the mineralogical impurities associated with these minerals are the determinant factor on their reactivity under alteration systems. These results were supported by mineralogical and leachate chemistry data from leach cell tests run on these samples. Pyrite reactivity decreases in the presence of associated impurities due to a galvanic effect whereas pyrrhotite reactivity appears to be controlled by the formation of a passivating layer, which overcome impurities effect. Electrochemical responses of sulfide-bearing samples provided valuable information on the prediction of ARD generation.

Acid rock drainage (ARD) resulting from the natural oxidation of sulfide mineral wastes has become a major concern to the mining industry, both during the operational period and after mine closure. ARD is generally characterized by high acidity and high concentrations of dissolved metals and sulfates. If the generation of acid cannot be prevented or controlled, it must be treated to eliminate acidity and to reduce the concentration of heavy metals and suspended solids before release to the environment. Microorganisms play an important catalytic role in the generation of ARD. Several prevention, control and treatment technologies that are based on microbiological activities have been developed. The role of microorganisms and biotechnology in the generation of ARD and their role in the methods used for prevention, control and treatment are discussed in this paper. Recently developed passive and biological treatment processes that have been implemented at mine sites are emphasized in this paper. Benefits, limitations and design criteria for passive biological processes are also presented.

Introduction Tailings disposal methods used by the mining industry include the use of on-land impoundments, surface and underground mine backfill and marine disposal. The latter method, where applicable and under certain circumstances, can be the most economical and best environmental option. The term marine disposal is used to describe deposition of tailings in the open ocean, coastal waters, fjords and inland lakes. A major element in planning and designing a marine outfall is the assessment of its potential environmental impacts. The nature of the disposed tailings, and the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the receiving water body must be carefully assessed prior to deciding whether marine disposal is an acceptable option for a particular project. During the last decade, the North American mining industry has demonstrated a commitment to studying potential adverse environmental impacts of marine tailings disposal and to continue monitoring of the receiving waters. Extensive monitoring programs have been undertaken by Canadian mines. Marine tailings disposal is not used in the United States today. One of the largest U.S. mines proposing to use this option is the Quartz Hill mine of U.S. Borax in Southeastern Alaska. To assure the regulatory agencies and the public of the viability and acceptability of this option, U.S. Borax undertook an extensive program of environmental studies aimed at assessing the impact of marine tailings disposal. This program was part of the feasibility and environmental permitting studies conducted by Bechtel Civil & Minerals, Inc, on behalf of U.S. Borax. Due to the unique nature of the proposed tailings disposal system, a Board of Consultants was established. The Board assisted in planning the modeling and field program and reviewed ongoing work. This paper outlines the basic elements of the marine tailings disposal study program which can be viewed as a prototype for similar studies elsewhere. Background The Quartz Hill molybdenum deposit is located on a knoll in an elevated valley in a mountainous region of southeast Alaska, about 45 miles east of Ketchikan (Figure 1).

Large-scale use of CCBs in mine environments involves filling surface and underground coal mines with ash to address hydraulic problems, AMD, backfilling and subsidence. The environmental risk of land filling CCBs is generally evaluated by the Toxic Characteristics Leaching Procedure (TCLP) or the Synthetic Precipitation Leaching Procedure (SPLP). However, there is doubt regarding the applicability of these tests to long-term CCBs leaching behavior in groundwater associated with coal mines. The Mine Water Leaching Procedure (MWLP) was developed to provide a site specific risk assessment tool. The MWL Pprocedure is presented in this paper and compared with TCLP as a study.

INTRODUCTION Deformation measurements are some of the simplest and most useful measurements that can be made by the mining/rock mechanics engineer in assessing the sta¬bility of openings in rock. A number of tools and tech¬niques are presently available. This chapter will de¬scribe the most common instruments, their application, and present the equations needed for data reduction. MECHANICAL STRAIN GAGE Description of Instrument A mechanical strain gage of the Whittemore type shown in Fig. I is a useful instrument for measuring deformations of pillars, sidewalls, and roofs of under¬ground mines. Measurement gage lengths typically range from 51 to 254 mm (2 to 10 in.), and the dial indicator reads to 0.0025 mm (0.0001 in.). The instru¬ment measures the deformation between precision gage points which are anchored in the rock. The anchor points are typically grouted in small holes drilled 12.5 mm (1/2 in.) or so deep into the rock. Strain a is calculated from the measured deformation AL with the equation [ ] where L is gage length. A necessary accessory for the instrument is a master bar normally made from invar steel having a low co¬efficient of thermal expansion. This bar allows one to check the instrument for changes in the mechanical zero point and to correct for temperature effects on the measuring instrument. The instrument is available from Soiltest, Inc. for a cost of approximately $340; the cost of the master bar is approximately $55; and nonreusable brass inserts which are anchored in the rock are nominally priced at $0.27 each. All prices are for 1978. Applications Two classes of applications may be considered, one where only one measurement direction is involved and the second where three measurement directions are em¬ployed. Applications where only one measurement di¬rection is necessary include: monitoring crack or frac¬ture separation or shear movement with anchor points on opposite sides of the discontinuity; measurement of vertical strain in a pillar or sidewall; and measurement of steel support deformations with anchors in the steel members. The more general application involves a strain ro¬sette consisting of three measurement directions which for convenience are oriented 1.04 rad (60°) apart to form an equilateral triangle as shown in Fig. 2. The next 13 years gave me an education that anyone, then or now, would well envy. W.T. Reid had founded Belmont School along the lines of Groton and, as at Groton, he sent many graduates to Harvard. He obtained excellent teachers and maintained as strict a discipline as the independent nature of the western students would stand. With a beautiful location in an unspoiled little valley in the foot- hills of the Coast Range there was every chance for walks and expeditions. The years at Belmont were good ones. My closest friends were Harold Jordan and Lewis Hackett. Lewis was son of the military director at the school. With half a dozen other very young inmates we early won the sobriquet of "The Dirty Dozen." Sliding down a steep muddy hill on barrel staves helped us earn the name. An inherited shyness exaggerated my sensitivity at being a "teacher's boy" and this prevented a close association with the wilder western boys who made up most of the schoolmates. Trapping wildcats and coyotes in the brush-covered hills and taking long walks gave me plenty to do. I had grown too fast and when I went to college was 6 ft 3 in. tall and weighed only 145 lb-hardly a respectable bean pole. I was only two months past 16 when I left for Harvard. The long summer vacations were happy ones. Most of them were spent in the high mountains, and even when I was ten years old I could keep up with anyone on long steep climbs. I learned to handle a rowboat during our stays at Lakeside, a rustic resort at the south- east corner of Lake Tahoe that could then be reached only by the steamer that made a dally trip around the Lake. The Lucerne Valley limestone mining district is in the San Bernardino Mountains, one of the major ranges in the Transverse Range Province of southern California. Several large limestone mining operations are present along the north range front in Lucerne Valley, and the area is one of the premier limestone mining districts in the country. Resources are contained in Paleozoic carbonate rocks that are part of a thick late Precambrian and Paleozoic sequence that uncomformably overlies crystalline basement. The district has been affected by multiple episodes of metamorphism and deformation, as well as by a complex sequence of late Cenozoic structural events. Detailed studies, however, have demonstrated that these rocks can be divided into formations correlatable with late Precambrian to Permian strata of the Cordilleran miogeocline. The district is the leading producer of white, high-purity calcium-carbonate products in western North America. Pluess-Staufer (California) Inc. mines and processes high-purity white limestone from extensive deposits, and is one of the largest producers of high-quality limestone fillers and extenders in the western United States. Major factors influencing the genesis of economic carbonate deposits in the district include depositional environment, post-depositional processes such as diagenesis, dolomitization and/or silicification, regional and/or contact metamorphism and associated intrusive activity, faulting, folding, uplift and erosion, and preservation from erosion. Regional geologic studies, detailed geologic mapping, intimate knowledge of stratigraphy, and recognition of complex structural relationships have proven to be invaluable tools in the discovery of high quality calcium carbonate deposits in the district.
