Following on from many years of research aimed at improving the effectiveness of truck haulage operations in mines operated by BHP Minerals, BHP Research developed a concept for an Innovative Large Mining Truck, (ILMT) which has the potential to significantly improve the cost effectiveness of rear dump mining trucks. The ILMT concept reduces the empty vehicle weight dramatically, greatly reduces unequal rear tyre loading and improves ride and handling characteristics. The concept has been taken to the "proof of concept" prototype truck stage with the cooperative efforts of BHP Coal, BHP Research. Liebherr Mining Truck, Inc., Liebherr-Australia and Birrana Engineering. Testing of the prototype truck commenced at a coal mine in Queensland, Australia during May, 1996. Preliminary results from the testing program are very encouraging. Expectations are being met and in some cases exceeded.

The recent mine disasters in Australian coal mines have initiated an introduction of Self-Contained Self-Rescuer (SCSR) as component in the development of new escape strategies for miners. These self-contained self-rescuers are closed circuit, demand sensitive breathing apparatus that make oxygen available to the wearer for a nominal period of time. Their operation is completely independent of the surrounding atmosphere. Once properly donned, the SCSR can assist a miner to escape from an area containing smoke, toxic gases or an oxygen deficient atmosphere. The duration of a typical SCSR is usually taken at the point of complete collapse of the breathing bag which is accompanied by an increase in breathing resistance and inhaled levels of carbon dioxide. Because the oxygen consumption (V02) and the heart rate are correlated, a prediction of V02 and consequently the duration of an SCSR can be made by monitoring the heart rate. Thirty-seven volunteers participated in field simulated escape trials at four underground coal mines. The results from the field trials suggested that oxygen consumption depends on the heart rate, the body weight and exercise rating of the miner. All the volunteers were asked to fill out the questionnaires to evaluate the performance of the units. The miners indicated that they could tolerate the inhaled temperature without any difficulty to breathing resistance. A complete statistical analysis of the field results is also presented.

West Virginia's basic coal mining regulatory programs are not unique when compared to Federally approved programs implemented by other coal producing states. In fact, the language in The West Virginia Energy Act governing subsidence mirrors that written in the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act as well as other states' statutes. Certain legal and administrative issues, how¬ever, combine to make West Virginia's regulation of surface subsidence a singular approach.

Increasing pressure from State and Federal agencies to mitigate mining-induced subsidence damage to overlying structures has presented a unique problem to the coal industry in the western United States. Because sandstone escarpments are an environmental issue, millions of tons of coal reserves that underlie these escarpments risk being classified as unminable by regulatory agencies. At this time, the effect of subsidence on escarpments has not been well documented or characterized. The Bureau of Mines is using numerical modeling techniques to analyze escarpment response to longwall mining. Two- and three-dimensional finite element models have been constructed for a study area near Price, Utah, where longwall panels were mined near an escarpment. This status report includes preliminary results showing that the pattern of subsidence surrounding the escarpment can be simulated through numerical modeling. Models that include such structural details as joint and fracture patterns will better simulate subsidence patterns .and magnitude. By locating longwall panels strategically in relation to the escarpment, stability may be preserved throughout the mining process. Numerical modeling provides a method to analyze relatively quickly the effects of longwall panel location and resulting subsidence on escarpment stability. The goal is to provide a relatively accurate predictive tool for mine planning to determine if escarpment stability can be maintained while maximizing extraction of the coal reserves.

Have technological advancements in underground coal mining driven people's skills to new highs or have the expanded skills of mining people driven the industry's technological advancements. Who knows? What we do know is that both our technology and our people have made meaningful and significant advancements. Overall, longwall systems continue to increase productivity and retreat faster. Globally, gate road development is the primary bottleneck in a longwall mine. The primary bottleneck in gate road development is roofbolting. Generally, roofbolting is the bottleneck in room and pillar operations as well. This paper will present an integrated manufacturer's (Joy Mining Machinery) vision of the future in comparison to current equipment performance. Particular emphasis will be placed on roofbolter technologies.

An Automated People Mover (APM) transit system is planned for the growing Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The APM will improve passenger movements between the terminals, and provide a link to parking facilities, a new rental car facility, and the planned metro Light Rail. The underground works will include shallow twin bored tunnels, taxiway crossings, and underground stations constructed beneath critical airport facilities. Challenging soft ground conditions will require extensive underpinning and ground improvements. Design is underway, and construction is scheduled to begin in 2007 with project completion in 2015. The owner’s planned delivery method for the APM Project will be Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) with a Guaranteed Maximum Price.

8.1 INTRODUCTION Under room and pillar mining if the extraction ratio is low, (i.e., < 50%) a pillar can support the overburden without collapse and there will be no surface subsidence whatsoever. In other words, if the pillar sizes are properly determined to support the overburden weight, the roof strata cannot cave and there will be no surface subsidence, provided the entry width is small and properly reinforced so that a continuous roof fall leading to piping or the total collapse of the roof does not occur. Under the prevailing mining conditions in the US if only development mining is em¬ployed in room and pillar mining (i.e., no pillar extraction), the extraction ratio is usually less than 50% and generally no surface subsidence will occur. If pillar mining is employed, surface subsidence may occur, depending on the extraction ratio and the size of the remnant pillars (or stumps) left in the gob. The higher the extraction ratio, the smaller the stump pillars left behind in the gob. As the size of the stump pillars becomes smaller, the possibility of their support¬ing the roof without collapse is smaller. If all stumps are crushed completely, the roof will collapse and surface subsidence will occur. Again, whether surface subsidence occurs, it depends on whether the remaining stumps can support the overburden or not. Therefore, since the weight of the overburden which the stump pillars have to support is proportional to the mining depth, a fixed¬size stump pillar can support the overburden at a shallow depth, but will collapse under greater depths. In this context extraction ratio is not the only parameter for determining whether surface subsidence will occur. Furthermore, during pillar mining a pillar can be cut away in many ways to finally reach the same extraction ratio. Therefore, the safest way to determine whether or not sur¬face subsidence will occur in room and pillar mining is to compare the strength of all stump pillars in the panel of interest with the weight of the overburden that the pillars have to support. If they are too small to support the overburden, surface subsidence will occur. Under normal mining practices the characteristics of surface subsidence profiles vary with methods of mining. In the US there are two types of coal mining methods, i.e., longwall and room and pillar mining. Longwall mining is indisputably a total extraction method, but different percentages of coal recovery are achieved in room and pillar mining. Recovery is much higher for sections with pillar extraction than those without pillar extraction. For those without pillar extraction, coal recovery increases with increasing entry width or decreasing pillar size. For those with pillar extrac¬tion, the total coal recovery depends on the amount of coal ex¬tracted from each pillar which is in turn dependent on the roof conditions and methods of pillar extraction. Bauer and Hunt (1981) analyzed the characteristics of the subsidence profiles due to the three types of mining methods in Illinois. Fig. 8.1 shows the range of locations associated with the following profile features: profile edge, maximum tensile curvature, maximum slope, maxi¬mum compressive curvature, and maximum subsidence. The scat¬ter of the data increases with decreasing percentages of extraction. The profile is much sharper for longwall mining and becomes milder as percentage of extraction decreases; for longwall mining the profile edge is always beyond the opening, while in room and pillar mining it may fall within. The location of maximum tensile strain moves outward, while that of the maximum compressive strain moves inward as the percentage of extraction decreases and the maximum subsidence decreases with decreasing extraction ra¬tio. The general concepts discussed in this chapter may not apply to the entry development sections between two longwall panels where roof caving in both panels are very severe and overlap each other. Consequently, it must be treated differently. 8.2 CASE STUDIES Kohli et al. (1982) described several case studies on surface subsidence due to room and pillar mining with pillar extraction. In one case, the seam was 6 ft thick and ranged from 650 to 800 ft deep. The panel was 720 ft wide (Fig. 8.2) and was developed with seven entries. Each entry was 18 ft wide and the pillars were driven at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Dur¬ing retreating, two additional pillars (pillars J and K) were devel¬oped, two blocks ahead of the pillar line, to take the barrier pillar, 160 ft wide, between panel No. I and No. 2. Pillar extraction began by taking a central slice across the whole panel, beginning from pillar 0 through J. After that, each pillar was sliced by 6 wing-slices, 3 on each side, leaving 4 stumps, 2 on each side. One of each pair was triangular shaped approximately 6 ft wide by 26 ft long. The other was trapezoidal, 26 ft long by 16 ft and 10 ft wide at the upper and lower bases, respectively. This resulted in a total extraction ratio of 85% within the panel. Obviously the stump pillars were not large enough to support the overburden and col¬lapsed completely. The final subsidence profiles were rather smooth, just like those under total extraction (Fig. 8.3). The max¬imum subsidence on Lines A and B was about 3 ft for an average mining height of 6 ft, but the locations of the maximum subsidence were skewed toward panel No. 1. Along Line D, the central por¬tion was flat-bottomed, but the maximum subsidence was only 2 ft, mainly because Line D was only two blocks from the right-side edge. Notice in every profile there was heaving of as much as 0.3 ft, beyond the edges above the solid coal. In another case (Fig. 8.4), the seam was 6 ft thick under 650 to 850 ft cover. Three panels, 710, 400, and 350 ft wide, respec¬tively, were extracted side by side. The entries were 18 ft wide and the pillars at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Pillar extraction was practiced the same way as described previ¬ously. According to the mine maps, there was no barrier pillar left between the adjacent panels. Thus after extraction the three panels formed a common gob of more than 1460 ft wide. This was re¬flected in the development of the subsidence profile along the county road. After Panel No. I was mined, the maximum subsi¬dence of 1.2 ft occurred at Monument No. 1. This was increased to 1.6 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 2 and went to a further 1.8 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 3. The final maximum subsidence of 4.3 ft occurred at Monuments No. 6 through No. 8, while the remaining portion of the county road showed rebound. However it must be noted that the subsidence profiles were rather bumpy and fluctuated, perhaps an indication of the irregular stump pillars that were left and crushed at various time after mining. This paper describes some of the results of a project for the design and demonstration of subsidence monitoring systems for underground coal mines. The project was designed to test monitoring systems described in an earlier feasibility report (O&apos;Rourke and others, 1979). General objectives of the project were to develop reliable cost- effective monitoring systems for use above caving- type mining operations, over supported mines, and in urban undermined areas. Topics selected for discussion in this paper include a description of the instrumentation systems, the site conditions, problems of installation, resulting recommendations and an over- view of subsidence performance data obtained. There were some particularly difficult problems of installation to overcome at this site. Some of these could be experienced at any surface or under- ground project, others are probably more directly related to Western coal fields. Almost any subsidence monitoring program may face the following difficulties:

Recent advances in GPS, machine guidance technology and telemetry allow an unprecedented level of control of surface mining operations. GPS technology can now locate the bucket of a shovel or the blade of a dozer within 50mm (2 inches).Some of the outcomes possible are: precise selective mining – even when the ore is visually indistinguishable from waste: tracking grade and tonnage of every ore parcel through the mine: real time productivity monitoring: detailed post accident safety analysis: tracking the movements of every piece of equipment. This paper will consider the contribution that GPS based machine control systems can make to ensuring that surface mining projects deliver the outcomes promised in the feasibility studies. Case studies of installations are presented.

Thiourea is a reagent capable of complexing gold and silver. With the proper oxidant, thiourea can effectively dissolve metallic gold and silver. A thiourea leaching system possesses potential advantages over conventional cyanidation including acidic solutions instead of alkaline, cationic complexes in contrast to metal-cyanide anoionic complexes, and faster leaching rates with acidic solutions of thiourea. Generally, the rate of metal dissolution in thiourea solution is fastest when ferric ion is employed as an oxidant. Acidic thiourea solutions for certain applications could offer a nontoxic and noncorrosive option for processing gold and silver. This paper provides information regarding the fundamental chemistry of the acidic thiourea system, and reviews the dissolution of both silver and gold in acidic solutions of thiourea. The recovery of gold and silver from acidic thiourea solution is discussed.

The East Bay Municipal Utility District is undertaking seismic upgrades of the Claremont Tunnel in the San Francisco Bay area. The tunnel carries treated water across the active Hayward Fault to supply a major metropolitan area. Studies indicate the tunnel could be severed by fault offset during a major seismic event. A design approach to achieve limited operation of the tunnel following fault displacement has been established and design details are currently being evaluated. This paper describes the project, the design approach, and summarizes significant construction constraints.

The Queens Bored Tunnels consist of 11,000 feet of 19&apos;-6" inside diameter tunnels mined through rock, mixed face and dense glacial till, constructed with bolted gasketed one pass reinforced concrete liner. The tunnels are to be excavated with a pressurized face TBM, either EPB or slurry. The construction of the tunnels will require ground stabilization in the mixed face area, instrumentation and monitoring of railway infrastructure, underpinning of bridges, relocation and protection of utilities, demolition of some industrial buildings, construction of open-cut approach tunnels and emergency exits and vent plants. The purpose of this paper is to describe the scope of work, the suggested methodology and the proposed construction schedule.

Conventional ground support in accordance with latest state-of-the-art considers proper preparation of geotechnical investigation, structural design, observation during construction and fair risk sharing documents. Depending on the ground, there are different means and methods, reflecting different experiences. The paper is presenting ground support concepts, as mostly used in Europe during the past three decades. It discusses the use of anchors as well as the use of steel arches respectively combinations. It also discusses different applications of plain shotcrete, respectively fibre reinforced shotcrete. As excavation sequence is a major input to create the ground arch, the paper discusses also criteria to create closed ring conditions. Finally deformation criteria will be presented with case histories in order to control stability of the structure.

The South East Transit Project is a $520 million project in Brisbane, Australia which includes the construction of a 32 km Busway to access the south-eastern suburbs. Close to the centre of Brisbane, tunneling techniques have been used to minimise surface disruption. This paper describes some of the features of the longest driven tunnel on the project, the Vulture Street Tunnel. The Busway is a two lane expressway for buses which requires a 10.2 m finished width and a 12.6 m excavated span of driven tunnel. The Vulture Street Tunnel carries the Busway at minimal cover beneath the operating Vulture Street Railway Station, beneath a three storey office building and beneath the roadway to the Mater Hill Busway station. Halfway along the route, a Y-junction has been constructed to enable future connection with a light rail route. Key features in the design and construction of the Vulture Street Tunnel include: Use of canopy tubes to drive a 12 m wide tunnel beneath operating railway tracks with less than two metres of cover in highly weathered rock. Underpinning the office building in the route of the tunnel construction from within the building carpark. Construction of a 24 m span Y-junction with 7 metres cover of weathered and faulted rock. Use of predictive analysis as an adjunct to traditional back analysis to estimate the tunnel settlements from pressuremeter test results. This paper describes the design methodology with particular reference to settlement prediction, as well as construction innovations used to complete the tunnel. This paper will be of interest to all designers who have to create large spans in minimal cover in weak rock in urban areas and who have to predict the settlement

The three thousand foot long 66-inch diameter Folsom East Interceptor Section2B was completed accident free, on time and under budget with no measurable surface settlement. The tunnel passed through nested cobbles, highly abrasive sands and gravels, and abandoned mine workings with less than five-feet of cover at times. Preventing settlement was critical since the tunnel passed under a heavily traveled state highway. A pilot project to test microtunneling and pipejacking methods in the same ground conditions abandoned both drives before completing the planned drive lengths. This paper discusses performance of the conventional tunneling method selected to excavate the ground and the effectiveness of the ground modification techniques employed.

The St. Cloud Mining Company extracts clinoptilolite about 6.5 km south of Winston, Sierra County, New Mexico. Production is about 18,000 mt/year. Natural zeolites are good adsorbents for positively charged solutes such as ammonium. St. Cloud’s production is used in animal hygiene, animal feed, environmental mitigation, air and water filtration, and other applications. By a simple chemical treatment with a surfactant, zeolites can also be modified to adsorb negatively charged solutes such as nitrate and arsentate, and neutral organics such as solvents and fuel components. These surfactant-modified zeolites are used in treating groundwater contamination, stormwater runoff, and solvent vapors from painting operations.

The feasibility of developing the Underground Science City below the Kent Ridge Park has been investigated. The primary aim of the study has been to explore the possibility of creating underground space to house a new community of research laboratories and offices. The investigation represents the first such study undertaken in Singapore for a non-military underground facility. The paper describes the geology of the Underground Science City site and illustrates the layout and plan of the Underground Science City. The geology and rock mass below the Kent Ridge Park is generally favorable for the development of an underground cavern complex. Underground Science City can be potentially developed housed in a cavern complex. Several potential development schemes are studied; with various combination of deep/shallow mined caverns of different span sizes and access options. The preferred scheme is shallow, mined room-and-pillar caverns with large spans and shaft accesses at both existing surface Science Park 1 and Science Park 2. The scheme can be potentially expanded laterally to create more underground space for new Underground Science Cities at Kent Ridge area.

Since the dawn of cyanidation leaching techniques for precious metals, certain manganese-bearing silver ores have been a problem due to low silver extraction. Since simultaneous occurrence of silver and manganese is common in nature, this situation has made many otherwise attractive silver deposits uneconomic in the past. Several older techniques have been useful but at $1.29 per ounce of silver, the economics were unfavorable. With the new look in silver prices and some improvements in processing technology, neglected silver districts offer new promise.

Vast improvement in methods of design and analysis of the long- term stability of overburden above room and pillar mines is needed. Improved methods are vital for planning and land development and for prediction above existing, presently stable, room and pillar mines. As shown on the flow chart in [Figure 1], the assessment of the long-term stability is an integral part of the site investigation process regarding mitigation of surface damage effects. In Illinois, flat farmlands with subjacent coal reserves cover vast areas. In some of these areas high extraction of the underlying coal layer(s) may not be possible since the resulting surf ace subsidence combined with a pre-existing shallow water table would make the land too wet. Thus recovery of this coal might only be accomplished by room and pillar mining where the ground surface does not subside and the hydraulics of the overburden are not significantly affected.

Minor subsidence damage to the Burgettstown Junior-Senior High School building and grounds near Burgettstown, Washington County, Pennsylvania, prompted an investigation of the site in early 1985 by the Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources. The investigation determined that subsidence over an abandoned coal mine was occurring and that additional damaging subsidence would occur if reclamation measures were not taken. A Pittsburgh Coal Seam Mine which was abandoned in the 1920&apos;s underlies the school at a depth of sixty-five (65) feet. This sixty-five foot section is comprised of five (5) feet of unconsolidated overburden and sixty (60) feet of thinly bedded, highly fractured shale. Approximately five and one-half (5-1/2) feet of Pittsburgh Coal was extracted at the school site. A thin shale binder and one (1) to one and one-half (1-1/2) feet of roof coal were left in place. Within the Contractor&apos;s Underground Working Area (See Figure 1) approximately thirty (30) percent of the coal was extracted. It appears that the mine was just being developed in the vicinity of the school when it was abandoned for no known reason. Other nearby portions of the mine show extraction approaching sixty-five (65) percent.
