Rare earth compounds, such as samarium-cobalt compounds and neodymium-icon compounds, are being used more often for the manufacture of permanent magnets, because these materials permit the production of permanent magnets with higher magnetic energy potential than the conventional ferrite magnets. Especially, the recent rapid developments in the field of electronics and electro-technology have demanded an increased production of rare earth magnets. Unlike ferrite, which is typically produced by a wet process, rare earths can be ground and classified either in a wet or dry process. In the past, batch ball mills, through-pass ball mills in circuit with air classifiers, and conventional jet mills were primarily employed for the dry processing. These methods, however, have suffered from the problems, for example, wear and contamination, low product quality In particle size distribution, difficult to adopt inert-gas operation, and high specific energy consumption. In this report, dry processing of rare earth powders will be presented, especially ultrafine grinding with fluidized bed jet mill.

Phillips Coal Company (PCC) submitted the first surface mine permit application under the Office of Surface &lining approved regulatory program of the State of Louisiana. This application for the Oxbow Lignite Surface Mine which is located approximately 64 kilometers (40 miles) southeast of Shreveport, Louisiana was submitted in March 1981. The State of Louisiana Office of Conservation, Surface Mining Division, assigned this application number LSM-1, indicating it is the first one submitted in Louisiana history. The permit area for the Oxbow Mine encompasses 6,251 hectares (15,627 acres). Of this total permit area, 5,862 hectares (14,656 acres) were classified by soil type as prime farmland by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service (SCS). Prime farmland acreage in the permit area became a major central issue in our early planning stages and throughout the permitting process of the Oxbow Mine, due to the magnitude of acreage involved.

A risk analysis on mine fires for all U.S. underground coal mines from 2000–2012 was completed to identify locations that have a high risk for fire incidents. The data for this analysis was extracted from the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA) mine fire accident reports database. After identifying fire incidents from this database, a risk matrix was developed for underground locations that showed a significant propensity for fire incidents. This matrix associates the hazards and risks with the severity and frequency of their consequences at each location. These significant mine areas will be the concentration of future studies in fire behavior, suppression techniques, and simulation methodologies. INTRODUCTION Fires in underground mines pose significant hazards to personnel because of inherent restrictions to movement and limitations to egress routes. Despite improvements, mine fires remain serious hazards in underground coal mine. In order to better mitigate the risks from fire hazards in the modern underground mining environment, a better understanding of where fire events occur must be gained. The following paper presents an investigation on the number of fatal and non-fatal incidents in underground coal mines fires from 2000 to 2012. Three phases of risk assessment (i.e., risk identification, estimation, and evaluation) were applied to the recorded fire events from the MSHA incident database that occurred during this time period. Using this process, a fire hazard was first defined. This definition was then used to identify any incidents that had occurred as a result of the defined hazards. The seriousness of the injuries and damages were finally quantified for each incident though an estimate of severity and frequency and then aggregated according to underground location (ISO, 1999; Van Duijne, 2008). Using this approach, locations prone to incidents resulting from fire hazards were first identified. The risk for the occurrence a fire incident in general was then estimated for each of the identified locations. The results of this assessment will be used to improve fire simulation techniques for the identified, high risk underground locations. RISK IDENTIFICATION A risk for this assessment was defined as any single occurrence of a fire initiated by the ignition of gas, dust, or electricity. Each recorded occurrence of such an event in the MSHA incident database was counted as a single fire incident. Both non-fatal incidents that were reportable but did not result in a fatality and fatal incidents that fell into the aforementioned criteria were counted. Incidents in the MSHA database that were already classified as “generic” were not considered. The remaining incidents were then totaled and aggregated according to the underground location in which they occurred. In previous studies, a number of locations, which are listed in Table 1, were highlighted as high fire hazard areas (McDonald et al, 1980; Pomroy et al, 1995; De Rosa, 2004). These locations were used to group the fire incidents extracted from the MSHA incident database. The compiled numbers of non-fatal and fatal underground coal fire incidents from 2000 to 2012 are displayed in Table 1.

The use of radioactive gages in beneficiation plants is relatively new However, enough applications have been made so that it is now possible to positively state that these gages have definitely progressed from a laboratory device to a very rugged and reliable on stream process measuring instrument. Gamma Ray Gages of the type presently being used in the beneficiation industry consist of three basic components: (1) A source of radiation (2) A radiation detector (3) An electronic amplifier The source is usually a radioisotope such as cesium-137, or cobalt-60. This source, adequately protected and ruggedly mounted, is most commonly placed on one side of a pipe or vessel. The radiation detector is then mounted on the opposite side, Since the absorption of gamma radiation as it passes through various materials is a function of the density of the material, the change in radiation measured by the detector is proportional to the change in specific gravity of the product in the pipe or vessel. One popular type of detector in use today is a cell which converts radioactive energy directly into electrical energy1. This electrical energy, when amplified, presents a usable output for metering and control devices. There are, of course, many other components which are part of a working gamma gage installation, such as zero compensators, lead shielding, mounting brackets, equivalent absorbers, etc.

Yesterday, air pollution was somebody else's problem -- today, it is everybody's problem. The coal industry with thermal coal drying, is aware of their problem and the necessity of doing an acceptable job; however, there is much to be said as to how good a job is required and what performance limits should be set up. American Air Filter Company has been one of the pioneers in the solution of the thermal coal dryer dust problems, Because of high moisture content, products of combustion and occasional temperature surges, only wet collection has been considered as the practical approach. Our first installation goes back some 12 years with a total to date of 29 Individual wet collectors, each, fabricated of suitable corrosion-resistant material, at 14 operating plants. To eliminate a potential air pollution problem, a performance requirement of not more than approximately one-quarter (1/4) grains per cubic foot in the dust collector discharge was used. In nearly all installations, operating performance surpassed requirements, but discharge stacks were not entirely free of discoloration. However, plant nuisance and air pollution complaints were eliminated. This satisfactory performance was accomplished by medium priced wet dust collectors operating at a 4-6" W.G. pressure drop with cater drain requirements of about 1 gallon of drain water per 1000 cubic feet of air exhausted.

The gold ores in the Jerritt Canyon district have been recognized as refractory since they were first encountered by FMC geologists in 1976. Upon obtaining managing rights as joint venture partner, Freeport McMoRan Inc. developed an operating plan featuring carbon-in-leach gold recovery techniques for the oxide portion of the ores and a patented sulphide oxidation step followed by chlorination for treating the organic carbon constituents of the refractory ores prior to CIL gold recovery. The plant was successfully started up in 1981 with the first gold poured on July 4, 1981. Initial plant throughput was designed to be 2495 MTPD (2750 STPD) total through the dual processing trains.

An ongoing research program at the Spokane Research Center of the U.S. Bureau of Mines is directed toward investigating drilling parameters (thrust, torque, penetration rate, and drill revolutions) during the drilling of roof bolt holes. A system that measures these drilling parameters calculates the specific energy of drilling, and determines drill bit position has been developed by the Bureau and mounted on a roof bolting/drilling machine, through the use of a microcomputer, critical drilling parameters can be immediately interpreted and analyzed. This makes it possible to inform the operator of hazardous roof conditions. Initial results of this program are presented here.

The flocculation and dispersion behaviors of microsize wolframite and quartz are systematically studied in this paper. For synthetic mixtures, the floc separatory method on gravity units--electromagnetic vibration table (EVT) and lifting column (LC), have been approached. Satisfactory results can be obtained with a weak shearing. A better metallurgical performance can also be achieved for natural ore slimes through the combined technique. The efficiency is better than that of single gravity separation. Finally, the mechanism has been investigated.

Miami Copper Company has used conveyor belts underground since 1947, At that time, the draw level for a portion of the orebody was only 25 feet above the haulage level To get the main haulage drifts as far away as practical from under the stoping area, 301, belt conveyors were used for lateral transfer, If the haulage drift was kept in good ground., a satisfactory draw of these stopes could be effected in that repairs to the conveyor drifts could be accomplished while drawing ore from the stopes. Some 7,400,000 tons of ore were mined with the 301d belt conveyor at a belt cost of approximately $0,004 per ton of ore. When the mining plan for a new section of the mine was laid. out in 1953, it was decided to use belts to collect the ore from the higher draw levels, and. move the ore laterally to centrally located concrete ore passes for transfer to the main haulage level (See Cut #1), The final plans used belt conveyors too collect from 3 stopes: on the 570 level, 2 stopes on the 720 level, and one stope on the 900 level. The six stopes to be mined in this manner would produce about 8 million tons of ore, and the sequence of mining was such that not more than four 400 feet conveyors would be in use at one time, Four conveyors using 36 inch, 4 ply belting were designed by the mine engineering office and fabricated at the mine shop, so that no piece was longer than 10 feet, and. the heaviest piece was the 25 horsepower motor, The head drive section, and the tail-pulley-takeup section were of bolted construction so they could be broken down for easing moving, Due to the size of the mine openings, the belt had to be transported into the mine in 400 feet rolls, requiring two splices for an installed belt. A torque arm speed reducer was used with a V -belt drive which made it possible to change the speed of the conveyor by changing the diameter of the V-belt pulley (See Cut #2).

"Steel members of the ground support systems in underground mines are routinely exposed to corrosive environment that may range from acidic to alkaline. Corrosion of steel bolts leads to metal loss and thereby, reduction in strength and useful life. Protective coatings are commonly applied to the steel bolts to combat corrosion. However, coatings are expensive and often cumbersome in practical applications. Instead, Minova has developed an innovative technology based on sacrificial anodes. The anodes were designed from non-ferritic alloys that are inferior to steel on the Galvanic Series. This paper will present data from field testing to show significant benefit of the technology. Potential applications in current products will be discussed. INTRODUCTION Corrosion is a physical alteration of a steel material from electrochemical reaction with its environment that often results in reduction of the mechanical and physical properties of that material. Mine roof bolts, the subject of this investigation, are particularly susceptible to corrosion as they can be exposed in their working environment to ground water and air with high humidity. As other researchers have determined, corrosion increases markedly in sulfide ore bodies due to acid runoff. There are several types of corrosion that a rock bolt is likely to undergo when used for ground reinforcement in underground mines (Aziz et al., 2013). Of all the types of corrosion, pitting is particularly dangerous as it can remove capacity for the bolt to deform with subsequent strata movements. Sudden failure of a bolt is likely to occur when severe pitting corrosion is experienced. The type and nature of corrosion depend on the nature of the ground condition and bolt encapsulation. Generally, the type of corrosion and severity of the corrosion varies along the axis of bolt. Almost all of the mine roof bolts used in mines, with the exception of fiber reinforced polymers, are made from steel. At the outset, I believe reference should be made to comparatively recent world developments in copper which have an important bearing upon the Canadian position. COPPER SITUATION No one can doubt the marked change for the better compared with not so long ago when less than adequate attention was paid to marketing and to uses of the metal. I need not show you graphs of world copper prices, which except for relatively brief periods and war conditions were, until about three years ago, not unlike the topography of the Canadian Rockies. There remain, of course, some non-industry factors who yearn for the old days of "roller-coaster" copper prices.

This paper is concerned principally with the competition between fuels for industrial use in the United States. Total energy consumption in the U. "INTRODUCTION Drill and blast (DnB) represents the most important, and sometimes the most costly processes in a mine.. The cost of drilling and blasting operations greatly contributes to the “high cost trends of the overall mining operations” (Afum B. O. and Temeng V. A. 2015). The use of available information to improve the DnB processes can be the difference between a highly expensive process and an optimized one. Mining operations have access to several types of data sets and key information from a wide variety of different systems. This information is normally used to improve, evaluate and apply processes for drilling and blasting. This may include different types of data from the different stages of the process (before, during, and after the drilling and blasting operations), such as hole locations (planned and actual), penetration rates, drill operators, fragmentation (expected and resulting), explosive (design and usage), geology, vibration, and others. This information can be used on its own or combined for further analysis to reduce costs, improve safety, and evaluate results. Fortunately, due to advances in mining software, drill and blast engineers can exploit this data and create reports to evaluate results and improve the DnB process. However, as users start combining information from multiple datasets and establishing standard operating procedures for reporting this data across multiple sites, it becomes valuable to create auditable, automated, and sustainable processes for handling the information. In many cases the task of aggregating and standardizing the data formats has already been completed and is available to consumers via the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). A data warehouse team extracts data from the source systems and transforms it so that it is meaningful for decision support (Barbara H. Wixom, Hugh J. Watson, 2007). Our initial implementation plan for the DnB solution included using data stored at the sites; however we learned early on in the process that much of the work for aggregating and supplying the required data was already completed. The goal for this case study is two-fold: to show how information can be used to make decisions and improve processes, highlighting the value of using an EDW for managing Drill&Blast information; and to discuss how technical challenges encountered during the implementations were resolved. This paper is targeted at users that want to better manage their DnB data or try to set up standardized workflows for using this information. This case study will discuss the process of implementing a DnB workflow at multiple sites within Freeport McMoRan Inc (FMI) using both data at the sites and information available using the EDW. The paper will begin with an overview of the project. The discussion will then describe how DnB processes were used to set up daily workflows in order to provide information for evaluating process and making decisions. The final section will discuss some of the technical challenges and how they were solved, as well as possible next steps for further improving the workflow."

In the United States hydraulic cyclones have been used for thickening, classification and cleaning in coal preparation plants for many years. The cleaning cyclones presently in use are based on using a "heavy medium", such as a fine magnetite and water pulp. The latest addition to cleaning cyclones is the one which uses ?water only?, or simply called "Hydrocyclone". Just as was the heavy medium cyclone, the hydrocyclones were originated in the Netherlands (1, 2). Plants using hydrocyclones were built in Europe (3) and test plants were erected in Canada (4, 5, 6) and India (7). Roberts and Schaefer Company has built four plants using hydrocyclone circuits. One additional plant is in the process of construction.

There are several alternating terminological combinations such as "in situ mining", "borehole mining", "shaftless mining", "mineless mining", "geotechnology" etc.; specific terms denote particular method of unconventional mining technology: "underground coal gasification in situ", "underground coal combustion in situ", "borehole hydraulic coal mining" and others. This paper presents the results of a study conducted on a slope failure that occurred in the Q7 mining cut at Rio Tinto's Bingham Canyon Mine. The slope failure occurred in a weak rock mass with an estimated rock mass rating of 25%. The failure mechanism was of the circular type, involving ten 15-m (50-ft) benches and covered a total width of 152 m (500 ft). The analysis used Adam Technology's photogrammetric method with a two-dimensional rock fall simulation program (RocFall software) to design a 3-m- (1 0-ft-) high berm located 7 m (24 ft) from the toe of the failed mass. Back and predictive analyses were performed on a cross-section through the slide using Slope/W software, resulting in flattening the interramp angle (IRA) from 44° to 38°. This design modification produced a factor of safety (FOS) of 1.14. Sensitivity analysis involving FOS vs. pore water pressure showed that FOS is sensitive to water saturation. A dewatering system using a series of horizontal holes drilled below the slide and dewatering holes drilled from a drainage gallery has since been established to improve the stability of the slope. Throughout the one-year period since this investigation, no significant slope movement has been detected by the slope stability radar, and mining is in progress below the failure.
