The Bureau of Mines prepared and investigated xanthated sawdust adsorbents to determine their effectiveness in removing heavy metal ions from dilute aqueous solutions, mine-drainage waters, and brines. Stripping of the metal values from the metal-laden adsorbent was also investigated. The treated sawdusts had an adsorption capacity of 0.3 to 0.4 meg/g dry adsorbent for Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Ag, Zn, Cd, Hg, or Pb from feed solutions with pH 5 to 6. The feed solutions tested included mine-drainage waters and geothermal brine. Effluent metal concentrations as low as 0.05 to 0.1 mg/l were obtained at effluent pH values of 6 to 9. The order of affinity of metals for the sawdust adsorbent is Na«Ca~Mg~Mn<Zn<Ni<Cd<Pb~Cu. The presence of Ca, Mg, or Na in concentrations as high as 2 g/l does not seriously impair the heavy-metal adsorption. Metals were desorbed from the metal-laden adsorbent by elution with dilute mineral acids, sodium cyanide, or salts of ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid.

A methane emission rate study was conducted in 1969 on a longwall section of a Lower Kittanning coalbed mine in central Pennsylvania. The longwall face was mined with a drum shearer between developed headings on the head end and headings on the tail end that were driven with a ripper-type continuous miner as needed. The study was conducted over 22 consecutive shifts (7-1/3 days). The average methane emission rate from the Lower Kittanning coalbed during mining at the face and developing the headings at the tail end of the face was 34 Am. Caving of the gassy overlying strata as the result of mining at the face increased the methane emission to rates ranging from 702 to 1,049 cfm.

The Bureau of Mines dried and carbonized two wood wastes, one softwood (redwood) and one hardwood (oak), using continuous, vertical entrainment techniques previously developed for use with coal. It was demonstrated that these techniques are readily applicable to wood waste and that appreciable changes in the yields of carbonization products can be obtained by varying operating conditions. A limited amount of experimental work was done on briquetting the charcoals. Firm briquets were formed with oak charcoal, although greater quantities of starch binder than used commercially for kiln-produced charcoal were required. Redwood charcoal did not briquet successfully under the test conditions employed.

Design a high-production coal mining machine with inherent low dust generation and low frictional ignition potential. Approach Constant depth linear cutting (CDLC) provides a longterm solution to excessive dust generation from shearers and continuous mining machines through new design of the rotary drum culling system. Problems with rotary drum systems, which must be eliminated to control the dust generation at the source, include the effect of a con¬stantly varying depth of cut using fixed bit spacing, secondary fragmentation of already broken coal and, frictional heating of bits and entrainment of dust by fanning action due to high drum rotational speed, Each bit on a rotary drum enters the coal face at zero depth of cut, goes to some maximum depth at the horizontal centerline during sump, and exits at zero depth.

Develop a means for estimating vertical stress conditions in or around an underground mine so that appropriate measures for ground control can be taken before hazardous conditions arise. Background High vertical stress in an underground mine could cause or enhance hazardous ground control conditions which might lead to accidents, fatalities, and loss of reserves. An understanding of the vertical stress conditions at the mining level would allow a mine operator to take precautions that will minimize the occurrence of ground control problems. A knowledge of the underground stress conditions prior to mining could be used as an aid in future mine plan development to avoid or minimize ground control problems. Approach The Bureau of Mines developed a computer program for calculating the vertical stress resulting from the pressure of overlying rock masses on a mine or geologic surface at various depths.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the precipitation strengthening of lead¬-base alloys containing 0.5 through 4 weight-percent combined Cd plus Sb. The Cd and Sb were alloyed in a 1-to-1 atomic ratio which maintained compositions along the quasi-binary section Pb-CdSb. Tensile properties, creep rates, and stress-rupture values were obtained on alloys in the aged condition. The highest tensile strength was observed in an alloy of Pb-3 CdSb, After aging for 6 months at 90°±3° F, this alloy had a mean tensile strength of 8,950 psi with 15-percent elongation. An aged alloy of Pb-1 CdSb exhibited a steady state creep rate of 1.2 X 10-3 percent per day at a stress of 500 psi and a temperature of 90°±3° F. Times to rupture at stresses up to 4,000 psi and at a temperature of 90°±3° F were obtained for some compositions.

Compare the fire endurance of paneled steel stoppings with that of traditional concrete block Stoppings. Background Permanent stoppings or partitions arc used in mines to separate ventilation airways. The ability of stoppings to retain their structural integrity for a minimum length of time under lire conditions and prevent the spread of flame and toxic combustion products to an adjacent airway is critical. The success of miners in reaching safety during a fire depends largely on the presence of uncontaminated airways. Traditionally, permanent stoppings for coal mines are constructed of concrete blocks. Recently, paneled steel stoppings that satisfy many of the requirements demanded of permanent stoppings, such as incombustibility and strength, have been introduced. Their use also introduced concerns such as the ability of a steel stopping to maintain its ventilation control function when exposed to a fire and the potential that the fire could transmit enough heat through the stopping to ignite combustible materials on the unexposed side. To address these concerns, the Bureau of Mines investigated the fire endurance of galvanized steel and concrete block stoppings.

Develop methods of enhancing and measuring the high-temperature softening and melting properties of iron oxide pellets reduced under simulated blast furnace smelting conditions. Approach Add dolomite and Limestone flux and a low-cost organic binder, such as starch, carboxyl methylcellose (CMC), or waste papermill sludge, to the iron oxide concentrate to produce hematite (ferric oxide) pellets with superior high-temperature metallurgical properties. Simultaneous increases in softening temperature, gas permeability, and enhanced metallization rates are sought to improve blast furnace productivity and energy efficiency. Background In the past, bentonite, an inorganic binder, was the only additive (binder) used in the production of pellets made from iron ore concentrate. Research has shown that the reducibility of conventional (acid) pellets can be increased by the addition of flux or an organic binder. The increase in pellet reducibility results in less wustite in the center of the pellet at high temperatures, such as those obtained in the cohesive zone of the blast furnace.

Table 55 and figure 19 show the number of fires and fire injuries for stone mills by state during 1990-2001. Table 55 also shows the injury risk rates, employees&apos; working hours, and lost workdays. In all, 118 fires occurred in 33 states. Seventy-six of the fires caused 82 injuries (including 8 fires and 6 injuries involving contractors). The yearly average was 9.8 fires and 6.8 injuries. The Ewhr value was 873 x 106 hr (In = 0.019), and the LWD value was 1,911. Missouri had the most fires (16 fires and 9 injuries), followed by Pennsylvania (15 fires and 14 injuries), Michigan (9 fires and 5 injuries), and Virginia (7 fires and 5 injuries). Of these states, Virginia had the highest injury risk rate value (In = 0.09 1). Table 56, partly illustrated in figure 20, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, risk rates, employees&apos; working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires and fire injuries decreased during most of the periods, with a sharp increase during the last period. The number of employees&apos; working hours increased throughout the periods. The In values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values. Tables 57-63 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 21 shows the major variables related to fires for 1990-2001. Table 63 shows the fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

Provide roof to floor closure rate measurements during underground mining, especially retreat mining of coal pillars, thereby helping the miners predict an imminent roof fall. Approach An electronic device and rugged potentiometric extensometer were developed to provide a means fur measuring total closure and the rate of closure. How It Works An intrinsically safe, battery operated instrument is enclosed in a rugged, hand carried field case. The unit is constructed using low-power, integrated circuits to provide minimal battery drain. Two digital Light Emitting Diode (LED) readouts are used; one displays the rate, the other displays the total closure. The unit will measure one extensometer continuously or two extensometers alternately. Two potentiometric extensometers with a closure measurement range of 6 inches are attached to the readout unit. Principal mineral products in the Dominion of Fiji were gold, silver, pit and quarry construction materials, and cement. In the years 1978-79, the combined total value of these commodities accounted for some $15 million,2 or 85% of the total mineral output. Production of cement, sand and gravel, and quarry products increased substantially, but gold and silver output from Fiji&apos;s only operating metal mine continued the down-ward trend of recent years. Mineral exploration by several international mining companies as well as by local prospectors was being carried out over much of Fiji, and a number of interesting prospects were discovered. One of these, a medium-size porphyry-copper prospect in the Namosi area of Viti Levu, W88 at a mining feasibility study stage. At Mount Kasi on Vanua Levu, an extensive program of geological sampling and mapping W88 being conducted, and surface sampling and drilling W88 taking place at some base metal prospects in the south-central parts of Viti Levu. Also, high gold values in surface samples were reported at Vuda in western Viti Levu.

To improve a miner&apos;s chance of survival during an emergency by providing immediately avail-able breathable air and protection from toxic gases until a longer-duration breathing apparatus, stored nearby, can be reached. Approach: A belt-carried apparatus which can provide a closed-circuit atmosphere for ten minutes breathing has been developed under a Bureau of Mines contract. How It Works: Water vapor and carbon dioxide in the user&apos;s exhaled breath are removed, and oxygen is supplied, by chemical reactions. When the user exhales into the mouthpiece, water vapor in his breath reacts with potassium superoxide (KO2) stored In the canister to produce oxygen. The other product of this reaction (KOH) reacts with carbon dioxide and removes it from the air. The oxygen-enriched air then flows from the canister into two breathing bags. When user inhales through the mouth, that air is drawn out of the bags, makes a second pass through the chemical-containing canister, and flows into the mouthpiece tube. A nose clip is worn to seal off the nasal passages.

To reduce the possibility of injury to operators and damage to equipment caused by collision of mining vehicles during coal loading. Approach An energy-absorbing bumper was developed and tested underground on a continuous miner. How It Works The bumper, a long box-like weldment backed by five energy absorbers, is attached to a continuous mining machine by a hinge behind the cab. See Figure 1. When a shuttle car collides with the bumper, or when it is otherwise struck, the energy absorbers are compressed. This absorbs and dissipates part of the kinetic energy of the colliding vehicle, thereby reducing or eliminating its destructive effects. Each energy absorber consists of two chambers separated by a freely-moving piston. One chamber (Figure 2) contains hydraulic fluid. The second chamber contains a gas. When a collision causes the absorber to compress, the hydraulic fluid in the first chamber is forced past a metering pin and through an orifice. The hydraulic fluid then pushes against the piston, compressing the gas in the second chamber.

An experiment is described in which hollow inclusion cells (HICells) were used to measure stress in a jointed rock mass during drift development at the Stillwater Mine, Nye, MT, USA. Two HICells were installed in the footwall approximately two drift widths ahead of the face. One HICell was over cored and then immediately tested in a biaxial chamber. The other HICell was left in place and monitored as the drift was excavated in three advances, each one-half the width of the drift. Strains were recorded hourly by a datalogger. Results show that there was little stress change during the first and second drift advances, but that a large stress change occurred after the third advance. The measurements also showed that the in situ principal stress directions lined up with regional geologic structures. Stress changes during face advance were likely caused by deformation along localized joint sets and inelastic deformation near the face.

Develop a dry dust collector suitable for working faces and belt transfer paints. Approach A filter cartridge with a reverse-pulse, self-cleaning system has been mounted in-to a low profile unit requiring electric power only. How It Works Dust-laden air entering the in-let end of the collector passes through the two inline filter elements. When the elements load to a pre-selected pres-sure drop, they are automatically pulse-cleaned by a "backflush" method using compressed air. When the elements are pulse-cleaned, caked dust material on the filter surface is released, and falls away as lumps. Dust is removed from the collector by an auger mechanism. Features of the collector are: (1) unit is completely self-contained, (2) built-in air compressor for pulse-cleaning, (3) cleaning cycle initiates automatically at a preset restriction, (4) automatic auger discharge of collected dust, (5) detachable extension auger for transporting collected dust, (6) "dust leak" indicator light, and (7) "change filter element II warning light. The collector has been designed as permissible although approval has not yet been granted.

5. General Escapeway Requirements 5.1 Escape Routes Present escapeway regulations state "Every mine shall have two separate properly maintained escapeways to the surface which are so positioned that damage to one shall not lessen the effectiveness of the other, or a method of refuge shall be provided when only one opening to the surface is possible." "Escape routes shall be a. Inspected at regular intervals and maintained in safe, travellable condition, b. Marked with conspicuous and easily read direction signs that clearly indicate the ways of escape." "Application. "Regular" intervals means at intervals no greater than monthly where conditions are stable and oftener where conditions may change." "Designated escapeways inclined more than 30* from the horizontal shall be equipped with stairways, ladders, cleated walkways, or emergency hoisting facilities." As can be noted in present and proposed regulations there must be two separate properly maintained escapeways. In most operations, the escapeways will consist of one route that is the normal travelway used in day to day operations. The second route is usually a return airway through old work areas. Based on this generally accepted practice, we will designate the two types as primary and secondary.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated recovery of manganese from basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking slags because the slags represent a large potential resource of a metal for which there is no domestic production. BOF slags were leached using fluosilicic acid, a byproduct of the fertilizer industry. Manganese and iron were extracted as soluble manganous and ferrous fluosilicates while the calcium and magnesium remained in the tailings as insoluble fluorides. Treating the pregnant liquor with sodium chloride, precipitated sodium fluosilicate (Na2Sif6) which was recovered as a byproduct. Manganese and iron were precipitated as hydroxide-carbonate salts with the addition of sodium carbonate to the treated liquor. Recoveries for manganese and iron were 73 to 83 and 67 to 70 pet, respectively.

Determine the site specific flow behavior of leachants and groundwater during development, production, and restoration phases of an in situ leaching operation. Approach A computer program has been developed which simulates the hydrologic activity associated with in situ mining. Various user options enable modeling of many of the site specific geologic conditions and well field specifications that affect the hydrology of solution mining. How It Works In situ hydrology is modeled, using a closed-form solution to the three-dimensional, partial differential equation that describes changes in hydraulic head as a result of pumping from leachant Injection and recovery wells. Cost System The cost system reported here is a suite of computer programs which incorporates the logic and information flow structure as outlined in earlier chapters. Specifically, computer programs have been devel¬oped to: 1. compute labor, operating, and capital costs, 2. summarize cost and production data, and 3. compute the minimum acceptable selling price for coal. While the cost system can be executed independently, it is de¬signed primarily for use with the Master Design Simulator and there¬fore must conform to the overall system hardware. The computer model is written in Fortran IV for use with the IBM System 360/370 computers as well as with compatible units such as the Univac 1110 and CDC-6600. For ease in error detection and program modification, the model was constructed with a main routine and eight subroutines. The main routine reads and stores the data necessary for the cost computations and calls the subroutines in logical sequence. The subroutines perform the cost computations and data adjustments for reporting purposes. Each subroutine performs the cost computations for its particular com¬ponent of the cost cycle. The program operations are described in the following narrative outline. Control Subsystem As previously described, the main routine is a passive element, reading and storing input data and directing execution to the active subroutines for cost calculations. The supply of arsenic trioxide in 1982 was adequate to meet domestic demand. Allocation of supply by major domestic and foreign producers that began in 1977 ended during the first quarter of 1982. Major demand was about evenly divided between industrial chemicals and agricultural chemicals. Domestic Data Coverage.-Commercial- grade arsenic trioxide and arsenic metal were produced by only one U.S. company. In order to prevent disclosure of proprietary data, arsenic production data have been withheld.
