Critical decisions in iron ore project evaluation and production are based on global and local spatial estimates of primary mineral deposit properties (such as in situ geochemical grades) and geometallurgical responses (such as screened, washed or concentrated product yields and grades), which are derived from limited sample data. These spatial estimates are typically made using classical geostatistical techniques, which fundamentally assume that the attributes of interest behave additively. This assumption is generally appropriate for æprimaryÆ variables but æresponseÆ variables may behave non-additively and therefore their direct linear estimates may be biased.In this paper an existing additivity testing mechanism is used to quantify the bias resulting from direct linear estimation of a non-additive iron ore attribute. Data from a magnetite project are used to determine the circumstances under which such biases may be of material impact. This paper details the approach adopted to upgrade the current metallurgical facilities at both the Driefontein and Kloof Gold Mines in the Republic of South Africa. Goldfields Ltd operates eight metallurgical plants within South Africa of which three have recently been upgraded to replace the older technology previously installed, with modern equipment. This upgrade was undertaken with a view to improving extraction efficiencies and to reduce operating costs. The upgrade was undertaken in a phased approach with the first phase focused on the replacement of the filtration/zinc precipitation processes with modern pumpcell carbon-in-pulp technology. Included in this upgrade phase was the installation of an automated hands-free electrowinning cell, which represents the first commercial application of its kind in the industry. The second phase of the upgrade entailed replacement of the multiple comminution stages previously installed with large SAG and SAG/Ball mill combinations. Due to the rapid return on these projects, a fast-track approach was adopted which necessitated the purchase of available good conditioned second-hand mills from both within South Africa as well as in Australia. Goldfields Ltd is a large mining house with gold mining operations in South Africa, Australia and Ghana. A well advanced PGM exploration project is underway in Finland- Arctic Platinum.

LKAB operates two underground iron ore mines located in the northern part of Sweden, both using sublevel caving (SLC) as the mining method. Knowledge of the mechanisms of gravity flow is important since it affects both ore recovery and waste dilution. This paper describes results from a large-scale field test carried out at the Kiruna mine with a focus on gravity flow. It is part of Work Package 2 in the I2Mine project financed by the EU. A total of ten rings were blasted. Smart Markers based on radio frequency identification technology were used to monitor the gravity flow. An accurate delineation of the isolated extraction zone requires reliable detection of all recovered Smart Markers and precise knowledge of the 3D position of the markers within the burden. It was therefore necessary to carry out borehole deviation measurements (collar, alignment and trajectory). The blast performance was monitored by high-speed filming, near-field vibration monitoring and velocity of detonation measurements. Three-dimensional stereo images were taken from the drawpoint and the loaded bucket after each mucking cycle. Based upon that, fragmentation was assessed both in 2D and 3D. Furthermore, volumetric differences were determined at the drawpoint, which reflects the mobility of loaded material. For draw control, the Fe content is estimated by measuring weight and assuming a full bucket. The measured volume of rock in each bucket further improves this estimate. Possible flow disturbances occurring at the drawpoint were revealed by video recording. Two-dimensional laser scanning was carried out during mucking to track the position of the bucket and estimate the position and slope of the muck pile.The results from this test clearly show that the gravity flow in the large-scale sublevel cave in Kiruna mine is often of disturbed character. Standard draw occurred only in three rings and shallow draw in the remaining seven rings. In five cases, shallow draw developed towards standard draw, but occurred at rather late stages during extraction (70–125 per cent). The maximum width of the draw varied between 10 m and 13 m except for one ring (6 m). The draw reaches the cave rather early (5–25 per cent extraction) in shallow draw situations and much later (about 50 per cent) during standard draw. Waste originates from above in most cases, while more significant portions often occur at about 20–45 per cent extraction.All the results from this extensive field test are not yet fully analysed, and further field tests are planned. The Goodall gold mine is located 30 km east of Adelaide River, within the Pine Creek 1:250 000 map sheet, at 8 525 000 mN: 750 000 mE, on the AMG grid. The first gold was poured in April 1988 and the mine closed in September 1993, having produced 228 400 ounces of gold from 4.095 million tons of ore, at a head grade of 1.99 g/t. Oxide and primary ore was mined from one large open cut and low grade oxide ore from three smaller pits. The gold mineralisation was discovered in 1981 by means of a helicopter borne rock chip sampling survey, which delineated 13 discrete anomalies. Systematic grid sampling of rock chips outlined an area of 1300 m by 300 m within the 2.0 g/t contour. Over 7500 m of costeaning was used to delineate the A and B-Pod mineralised areas. Geochemical soil sampling played only a minor role in the discovery and geophysics none at all. By the end of 1984, 40 diamond drill holes had been completed and a resource of 3.63 million tonnes at 3.0 g/t calculated. In January 1985, Western Mining Corporation Ltd became a joint venture partner and funded exploration to cam a 60 per cent interest. Additional drilling led to a feasibility study in 1987, based on a Measured and Indicated resource of 4.25 million tonnes at a grade of 2.35 g/t. The host rocks are quartzo-feldspathic wacke and interbedded phyllitic siltstone, of the Proterozoic Burrell Creek formation. The main zone of gold mineralisation, A-Pod, occurs in a sub-vertical vein array, up to 50 m wide and 800 m in length, of quartz and sulphide veins (5-20 mm wide), It is parallel to and on the east limb of an upright, north plunging anticline. Five types of veining have been recognised, with the bulk of the gold mineralisation associated with quartz-pyrite-arsenopyrite and chlorite-quartz-pyrite veins. The gold occurs as particles, from 1-20 micron, as inclusions and along fractures in pyrite and arsenopyrite and to a limited extent in chlorite. The mineralisation is epigenetic and structurally controlled by fractures developed during an earlier folding event. The gold is assumed to have been derived from the underlying sediments of the Koolpin Formation by hydrothermal fluids emanating from the deep seated northern margin of the Cullen Batholith. Precipitation of gold may have been controlled by variations in temperature and pressure.

Despite the recognised importance of tailings management, there remain little data on the potential benefits of biological treatments compared with physical and chemical treatments. The operation of the majority of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) continues to employ mainly physical solutions, such as sub-aerial tailings slurry deposition, with increasing adoption of thickening, paste and filtration to dewater the tailings involving the addition of chemicals such as flocculants and coagulants. However, with tailings production continuing to escalate rapidly due to the increasing demand for commodities and reducing ore grades, available technologies have not demonstrated cost-effective performance at high tailings production rates. This paper examines the emerging role of bacteria to better manage tailings, reducing risks and optimising storage capacity. Bacteria have the potential to enhance tailings dewatering, maintain their permeability, delay the onset of desiccation cracking, and improve their shear strength. Bacteria-treated tailings may be suitable for use as construction materials. Bacteria also have potential in limiting the dusting of tailings and facilitating rehabilitation on closure. The paper describes a series of laboratory involving the addition of harmless bacteria to a range of tailings. The bacteria form a compact material called calcite (a common and stable form of calcium carbonate), which immobilises the tailings particles, releases water, and cements the tailings in a stable and natural matrix. The water released can be recovered or evaporated, depending on site objectives. The bacterial reactions are linked to physical and chemical processes, providing the potential for an optimal mix of technologies for particular tailings and site conditions.CITATION:Cifuentes, H and Williams, D J, 2018. The Rocklands copper project is a multilode, iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) + cobalt mineralised system located in the Eastern Fold Belt of the Mt Isa Inlier. Rocklands orebodies cover a range of oxidation zones from oxide, to supergene and primary. Each zone contains different economic minerals of interest. The supergene zones contain significant amounts of native copper and the primary zones are dominated by chalcopyrite. The juxtaposition of these oxidation zones and minerals make it an interesting mineralisation system.Current mine production sampling collects a nominal 3 kg drill chip sample from a 1 m composite, RC drilled interval. A site specific sampling procedure was needed to quantify introduced sampling error when taking grade control samples. Due to oxidation and mineralogical variation in ore zones we needed to develop a practically achievable sampling methodology that ensures minimum sample mass and sample error requirements are achieved to ensure ‘representative’ samples for all ore types.These issues are planned to be resolved using an experimentally derived method using principles from the Theory of Sampling. This method uses an experimental calibration of parameters K and a for Gy’s fundamental sampling error formula using a modified 32-piece sampling tree experiment to compile sampling nomograms for the primary and supergene ores. This paper demonstrates the process undertaken to improve the quality and standard of existing mine production sampling procedures at the Rocklands operation.Results indicate a sample mass of 5 kg for RC drill chips is appropriate for both the primary and supergene ores to achieve a fundamental error below 0.01 or 10 per cent relative error, which is slightly higher than the existing sampling protocol of 3 kg. An additional experiment is recommended to compile sampling nomograms using the exact laboratory comminution and mass reduction stage information to assess the use of a 3 kg sample. The results also indicate no changes are required to existing sampling protocols when sampling RC drill chips in primary and supergene ore at Rocklands.Sampling nomogram results also provide a useful ‘rule of thumb’ reference guide to other mining and exploration companies to help understand minimum sample mass requirements and sampling error during exploration drilling, resource evaluation and mining production stages when targeting similar IOCG mineralised systems. A sample mass of 5 kg is recommended when RC drilling similarly IOCG mineralised prospects and deposits in the Cloncurry area. Future test work is recommended when additional open cuts become active as well as including resource drilling drill core to provide better three-dimensional sample representivity.CITATION:Hawtin, M G, 2017. In January 2008 Chirano Gold Mines Limited committed to expansion of the Chirano Gold Project from its existing design capacity of 2 Mtpa ROM ore to a new design value of 3.5 Mtpa. In addition to increased throughput, the design had to contend with increasing ore hardness and competency, while at the same time make cost effective use of existing equipment with minimum disruption to existing production. The solution adopted involved some novel approaches including tertiary crushing and operation of the SABC circuit in overflow ball mill mode and parallel elution with a common acid wash column. This paper describes the approach taken to the design of these elements to achieve a cost effective and safe capacity expansion.

NASA’s Artemis III mission is expected to return astronauts to the surface to explore and sample the lunar volatiles by 2026. These volatiles are anticipated to provide scientific insights as to how the Moon was created and economic value to off-Earth operations. These same volatiles can pose health implications to astronauts and Earth based personnel handling lunar regolith samples. Using Australian, USA and NASA airborne contaminant exposure limits and the Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) measurements of lunar volatiles in the Cabeus crater ejecta, the minimum mass of lunar regolith that can be safely handled by humans on Earth and in spacecraft can be calculated. This analysis determined a 0.15 grams pure sample of Cabeus crater regolith within a cubic metre of air has enough volatiles to exceed safe working conditions, and 14.9 grams of pure Cabeus crater regolith per cubic metre of air can impact human life. The intent of this analysis is to assist safe handling and exposure calculations for the safe handling procedures of lunar regolith containing volatiles.

Over the past three decades, mining operations have seen a significant increase in the use of contractors for mining, camp management and catering, recruitment, maintenance, power management, and commissioning. More recently contractors have been engaged for stores and logistics, OH&S, environmental, exploration, training etc. In some countries, such as South Africa, the trend is towards total outsourcing of all aspects of a mining operation which is coordinated by the owners’ management team.During the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) more Australian companies considered and/or took on this approach to recruiting for both projects and operations as mining companies were forced to rethink their corporate strategies as commodity prices plummeted to low levels, pushing operations and projects into potentially financially unviable territory.This paper discusses the labour recruitment, commissioning and operating strategy of Western Areas NL (WSA), with the assistance of Independent Metallurgical Operations Pty Ltd (IMO), as it progressed construction, commissioning and operation of the Cosmic Boy nickel concentrator at the Forrestania Nickel Project during and post GFC. The use of IMO contractors allowed Western Areas to mitigate labour cost risk during the uncertainty caused by the GFC and let their management team focus on the task of bringing a new operation into viable and profitable production.

Geological reconciliation is an indispensable part of BHP Billiton’s Western Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) operations. Since 2009 our reconciliations have been calculated in a single, centralised sequel-server database. This system draws data from across our operations and calculates a hierarchical sequence of reconciliation factors that span the company from the smallest grade control (GC) block to the whole of WAIO. It then presents the results using sophisticated graphical reporting tools.The initial motive for developing WAIO’s reconciliation system was to meet corporate compliance and public reporting requirements. The ability to validate our resource and reserve models by comparing their estimates of tonnes and grade with production figures remains the system’s principal function; however, as the system has matured, we have significantly developed its ability to support the improvement of various technical activities within the business. For example, the system can now calculate and report reconciliation factors for different resource classifications, short-term planning models and geometallurgical estimates.More recently, great emphasis has fallen on the system’s ability to detect and warn of possible geological issues that may pose a risk to either production schedules or product quality. We envisage a future where automated analysis of our large historical data set will enable high-risk conditions within future mine plans to be detected and highlighted.In all of these ways geological reconciliation plays an important role in contributing to this company’s financial and operational resilience.CITATION:Loach, S J, 2017. Successful development of coal seam gas (CSG) resources in low-rank coalfields such as the Powder River Basin has raised interest in CSG from low rank coal in New Zealand. Kenham Holdings Limited holds 12 Petroleum Exploration Permits (PEP) covering some of New ZealandÆs low-rank coal and lignite resources and has engaged CRL Energy Limited to assist in the systematic evaluation of the CSG potential of the permits. To date, exploration results from seven New Zealand coalfields reflect differences in coal type, rank, depositional environment and depth of burial between coalfields. Several of the explored coalfields are considered prospective for CSG. One of the most advanced Kenham exploration programmes is in the Hawkdun Coalfield, Central Otago.   The Hawkdun Coalfield contains a single, thick lignite seam with properties that are similar to the Powder River Basin. Preliminary results indicate the Hawkdun Coalfield is prospective for CSG with the potential to contain between 25 and 60 PJ of gas; enough to supply a 30MW power station for ten to 25 years. Further drilling is planned to investigate the economic viability of the Hawkdun Coalfield. The in situ permeability of the lignite, the amount and availability of free gas, gas saturation at depth and market opportunities will determine its economic viability. If initial pumping and production results in the planned exploration programme are promising, the Hawkdun Coalfield will be further developed with additional production drillholes to form a trial production pod.

Over recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of miners in the Pilbara region of Western Australia targeting channel iron deposits (CID) located in valleys, intersected by ephemeral creeks and below the groundwater table. The falling iron ore price has triggered a drive to reduce cost and maximise yield. Creek diversions provide an opportunity to maximise the utilisation of orebodies and extend the life-of-mine.Creek diversions that are required during mining operations to access ore and provide flood protection have historically been constructed as uniform engineered channels designed primarily for flow conveyance while minimising earthworks costs; however, the design of diversions becomes more complex when they are required to function in a similar way to the existing creek system during operations and remain stable during more extreme events than would typically occur following mine closure, in accordance with current regulatory guidance. The design specifications for closure are often more rigorous than the operational phase, and could incur significant additional cost to implement retrospectively if not planned and designed upfront.The complexity of diversion design depends on site specific factors such as: the size of the creek to be diverted; hydrology; corridor restrictions; geomorphology; hydrogeology; geology; environmental and heritage values; potential impacts and the risk to operations and environment. The complex interactions of these factors must be well understood and hydraulic modelling undertaken to characterise the existing creek system, demonstrate the diversions, provide adequate flood protection during operations, and can function in a similar way to the existing system following mine closure. The design of the settling pond for the Malvern Hills opencast coal project was based on a primary requirement to control runoff and sediment generated from the immediate 6 ha mine catchment, which included two seepages from old underground workings. The pond has been particularly effective in controlling turbidity in the outflow water, with the consent limit of 50 NTU being met on all but one occasion and normal levels of discharge less than 10 NTU. Water quality testing carried out at the time of consenting indicated that there were no acid-generation issues with the proposed mine site in dominant mudstone strata of the Broken River Formation, and that water from the old mine workings was near-neutral in terms of pH and well-buffered. However, it became apparent over the very dry summer of 2003 - 2004 that slaking of the exposed mudrocks in the mine batters was resulting in significant acidity generation, and outflow pH levels were well below the consent limit of 6.5 during and following periods of rainfall. Although these acidity problems have been remediated in the short-term by the use of lime products, it is clear that a programme of lithotype characterisation for AMD should have been undertaken and this has now been implemented. Design of long-term acid drainage control measures is being carried out, and will probably be based around the use of hydrated lime for pH control with enhancement of natural wetlands.

The importance of goethite to Australian iron ore production is steadily increasing as the proportion of goethite-rich, martite-goethite bedded and channel iron deposits increases at the expense of declining production from high-grade microplaty hematite deposits. For this reason, an improved understanding of goethite in iron deposits, its genesis, goethite types and their physical and metallurgical properties is vital to maintaining optimum sintering and blast furnace performance in Asian steel mills.The terminology used to describe goethite in Australian iron deposits is currently highly variable. The discredited mineral name ‘limonite’ is still in widespread use as a field term for goethite and there are many misconceptions concerning goethite chemical grade and downstream physical and metallurgical properties. The goethite classification proposed here is based on geological and physical properties from which three types are recognised including brown goethite, dark brown-black vitreous goethite and highly microporous, friable yellow ochreous goethite.In practice, typical vitreous goethite with highly reflective surfaces and conchoidal fracturing, characteristic of the hard cap zone appears from X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and electron microprobe analysis to be significantly higher in Si (up to 18.7 wt per cent), Al (up to 3.5 wt per cent) and S (up to 0.14 wt per cent) compared to the generally very low (<1 wt per cent for Si and Al) levels of these elements in ochreous goethite and brown goethite. The data dispels the common misconception that friable earthy or yellow ochreous goethite is high in Al and Si and other chemical impurities. However, P was found to be consistently higher (mean of 0.112 wt per cent and up to 0.296 wt per cent) in ochreous goethite than brown goethite (mean of 0.011 wt per cent) or vitreous goethite (mean of 0.031 wt per cent). The highly porous microstructure of ochreous goethite is thought to have a much higher surface area, which may aid in preferential adsorption of P onto the ochreous goethite mineral surface.CITATION:Manuel, J R and Clout, J M F, 2017.
