The Black Star and Racecourse orebodies below 15 level contain a major portion of the primary silver-lead-zinc ore reserves of 56 million tonnes at 150 g/t Ag, 6.4% Pb and 6.5% Zn at Isa Mine. Extraction from this area is scheduled to begin in the early 1980's. Mining in this block will be quite com- plicated as the ore is contained in a dozen separate orebodies varying in width from 3 m to 20 m with only narrow barren pillars between them in some cases. Mining objectives which consider metal recovery, costs, environmental and safety factors, operating requirements and rock mechanics are used to compare proposals. The planning work involved in formulating mining proposals considers disposition of reserves, scheduling factors, sequence of extraction, extraction methods, haulage set-up and ventilation requirements.

At Yucca Mountain, USA, a tunnel is being built according to nuclear quality standards. It has proved possible to meet very high quality demands while at the same time achieving high advance rates. To be able to do this, routines on how to record and store quality related information have been established. This has meant that a new philosophy has entered the tunnelling industry. Especially for nuclear waste projects, of which Yucca Mountain is one of the first ones to be built, the experiences made and the quality assurance program established will be of great importance for future projects. The paper gives examples of what the Nuclear Quality Assurance system has meant in practice for the tunnelling at Yucca Mountain. And, it also explains why a non-grouted bolt, Super Swellex-, was chosen for long-term reinforcement in the tunnels which might host nuclear waste for thousands of years.

A novel approach is suggested for the solution of planning and development problems in the coal, mining industry. The formation of coal measures depends to a significant extent on sequential geological processes and events which are probably best defined in a "system of processes and responses." The great number of variables in such a system is a characteristic feature of geological environments. Research work over the past two decades, in particular, has successfully established analytical procedures for the identification and definition of relevant and irrelevant variables for mining developments in specific geological situations. Such situations are typifiable within the regional geological setting of coal deposits. Scale gaps can be bridged by reliance on common symmetrical attributes and pervasive geometric features. Depositional processes and their resulting attributes are responsible for the development of mechanically significant rockmass "defects" and anisotropies; such features have to be identified and assessed for the selection of colliery design criteria. It is suggested that the procedural frame- work of systems engineering analysis is a most appropriate tool for the assessment of those geological features that can influence the mechanical behaviour of the "floor-seam-roof" system in "high technology" mining operations of the future. Many epithermal gold-silver deposits areknown to occur in the Neogene-Quaternary volcanic complex of the central Andean region of southern Peru, northern Chile, western Bolivia, and north-western Argentina, an area of about 300,000 km2 where these volcanic rocks constitute the dominant cover. Some of the gold-silver deposits were mined during Spanish colonial times, as early as the 16th century,- whereas others were not discovered until the 19th and 20th centuries. The extraordinary gold-silver potential of this young volcanic complex, however, was not recognized until the 1970's when the phenomenal increase in gold and silver prices stimulated new exploration. New discoveries were made, chiefly in southern Peru and northern Chile, of high-grade ores in old mining districts and large low-grade ore bodies, both in old districts and in new areas having no history of mining activity. Many additional gold and silver deposits remain to be discovered within and beneath the young volcanic complex of this region.

Exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres has long posed a serious hazard to miners. The control of these hazards, some of which can have sudden and catastrophic effects and some others, slow and long enduring consequences, has been a major concern for labor, management and government alike. This concern has manifested itself in four primary mechanisms of control -- (1) regulatory control through minimum standard setting by the passage of mine health and safety laws, (2) engineering control through design and operation of mines according to the best recommended practices, (3) medical control through periodic physical examinations, wearing personal protection devices, etc., and (4) legal and social control through workmen's compensation laws for occupation related health rleterinratinn_

Late in 2005 it became apparent that cave propagation at the Northparkes Mine was not progressing as planned. By mid-2006 sufficient Reserves were identified to warrant an extensive drill and blast program to assist in cave propagation. This program began late in 2006 and concluded early 2007. A significant challenge faced was the drilling and blasting of holes between 75 - 240 m in length in the South Wedge in Lift 2 at Northparkes Mines E26 orebody. The project set new benchmarks in production drilling and charging in underground metalliferous mining. This paper discusses the drill and blast designs, the challenges and the operational issues encountered with this project. Also highlighted are ways in which these were overcome.

A new high tensile strength, steel cable, that may be grouted into boreholes has been developed for use as rode reinforcement. The manufacturing technique produces a birdcage pattern in which the cross section varies along the length of the cable. The load transfer from cement grouts to birdcage cables has been demonstrated in laboratory tests to be better than that of standard 15.2 mm diameter seven wire cables. The manufacturing process also allows for a wide range of capacities which may be specified by design engineers. The various birdcage cable configurations have been applied as rock reinforcement in a number of Australian underground and surface mines.

"In some lode-style gold deposits the geological (lithological) uncertainty may have similar economic significance as the grade uncertainty. In the absence of precise knowledge of the deposit geology, geological models of these types of deposits that are used to constrain spatially the estimated (or simulated) grade values may influence significantly the contained metal. Methods for assessing geological uncertainty quantitatively are rarely considered due to their perceived inability to consider exhaustive geological interpretations, and resulting models that often appear geologically unrealistic. Furthermore, should the lodes have been subjected to folding, or where the mineralisation continuity does not follow a planar orientation along strike or down dip, standard methods of variography and interpolation using linear vectors in space often do not provide a good representation of continuity. An alternative approach is to relate spatial samples from adjacent drill holes using an unfolding plane.The paper demonstrates conditional simulation of the geometry and gold grades of a folded lode-style deposit where:simulation of lode geometry considers explicitly the geologistÆs interpretation, andsimulation of gold grade values that consider explicitly the folded nature of the lodes.The results are contrasted to the traditional approach of linear vectors in real space for a single lode interpretation.CITATION:Richmond, A, 2012. The efficient operation of any modern metallurgical facility depends on the accurate measurement and estimation of flow rates, inventories, and composition of their intermediate and final products. All of this information is subject to both statistical errors and gross errors, which can lead to poor estimation of efficiency, yields and specific energy consumption. The detection and the elimination of these errors require not only plant data, but also product transactions and the operational events. Once the gross errors have been eliminated, it is possible to estimate validated performance indicators, such as grade recovery or yields. This paper describes the methodology to implement a unification and gross error detection system using the available infrastructure of both information and data reconciliation system. It covers the different infrastructure layers, from the data collection layer to the data validation and reconciliation layer. In addition, the impact of these methodologies on the decision-making process is presented.

The Murray Basin is known to contain major deposits of heavy mineral sands and intensive exploration for new deposits is being conducted in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales. The western Basin was well served in the Pliocene and Early Pleistocene by a variety of appropriate sediment sources, and potential coastal traps. Immature, fluvially-sourced sediments forming the Pliocene coastal complex of the Marmon-Jabuk Range in South Australia are part of a marginal marine assemblage containing a suite of economically important heavy minerals that include ihnenite, zircon, rutile and tourmaline. From a consideration of Pliocene palaeogeography and coastal dynamics, specific targets where concentrating processes are likely to have operated are identified in the South Australian portion of the Murray Basin. Such palaeo-environments include the down-drift, littoral zone of discrete foredunes or coastal barriers, the source area for transgressive dune complexes, tombolo facies, and intertidal shoals and sandbanks. Similar coastal processes are recognised for a preserved Early Pleistocene barrier complex.

Mining of copper ore at Mount Lyell has been continuous since 1893. The operation has always been marginal and the depressed copper Market over the last decade has seen mining continue on the basis of a series of short term plans. In 1985 it was determined that the mine would close in 1989 on completion of the 40 Series mining block. Significant changes in the value of the Australian dollar in 1986 and the subsequent effect on profitability dictated a review of the Company's operations. Lower level ore reserves, mining methods and ore handling systems were re-examined and a plan proposed for mining of the 50 and 60 Series mining blocks. The improved economics of this plan, together with workforce and State Government initiatives resulted in an extension of mine life to 1994.

A review of the various methods of degrad- ing cyanide either from gold processing liquors or electroplating baths is presented with some discussion on their relative merits or problems. Whilst alkaline chlorination is common practice in many U.S. and Canadian plants it poses particular problems for certain plants. Alter- native methods include electrolysis, hydrolysis and air oxidation with activated carbon as catalyst which are also integral steps in the carbon-in-pulp process. A basic study of the degradation of cyanide ion has been carried out therefore to determine the effect of temperature, oxygen and carbon. It is shown that carbon is an excellent catalyst for degradation by air and likely to lead to higher losses of cyanide in a C.I.L. circuit. Degradation by hydrolysis is important at high temperatures and high pH such as employed in the Pressure Zadra or Anglo elution processes. Carbon catalysed degradation of cyanide by oxygen in effluent streams may be an environmentally acceptable alternative to conventional chlorine degradation.

For the mechanisation or automation of mining, recognition of the shape of mined cavities is basic information. A three dimensional shape measuring system, developed and tested, includes an ultrasonic range finder which is attached to the tip of a serial link manipulator. The range finder can be moved to any position and direction in the operational space of the manipulator. The position of a point on the surface of the object is obtained from the position of the range finder, the direction of the beam of the ultrasonic waves and the measuring distance of the range finder.To avoid collision between the sensor and the object, the manipulator is controlled to trace the surface of the object For the tracing control, another ultrasonic range finder is employed. The test results show that the developed system has high performance.

How aqueous fluids move through rocks and minerals is a question of possible pathways and mechanisms. Existing pathways such as fractures and grain or mineral boundaries provide obvious channels for fluid movement. We show how minerals reactive in the presence of an interfacial fluid can be replaced by new product phases through a process of interface-coupled dissolution-reprecipitation. A resulting porosity in the new phase provides a new pathway for fluid movement and therefore mass transport through the mineral, which progressively reacts at a moving interface. Eventually fluids of new and changing composition can pass through originally solid minerals and move on further, taking remobilised elements with them, to be reprecipitated whenever the chemical and/or physical conditions allow. One such example is albitisation of rocks associated with mineralisation.

The Hedong Gold Mine is located in the Yantai area, Shandong province, China. It is an underground mine with an annual gold output of some 700 000 grams. The orebody is located on the edge of the Wanger Shan metamorphism zone, and the hangingwall of orebodies is thus defined by a prominent set of fractures. The proximity of the metamorphism zone and the inclusion of the fracture set ensure that both the orebody and the country rocks are unstable. The main orebodies dip at an angle of between 40 to 45¦, with a strike length of 160 metres and a horizontal width of 50 metres. Surface subsidence in the area is not permitted. Cut and fill mining is usually practiced. As the mining operation proceeds to greater depths, the ore grade is diminishing and it is necessary to find a more efficient stoping method. Sublevel open stoping with sequential extraction and filling of each sublevel has been designed and applied in situ. This new mining method is called æsublevel open and fill stoping methodÆ in the mine. Experience to-date is that new mining method is satisfactory.

Gold-bearing polymetallic sulfide deposits are common in Serbia, and mostly occur in the Karpato-Balkan and, to a lesser extent, the Serbo-Macedonian metallogenic province. These deposits û Coka Marin (Majdanpek), Grabova Reka (Blagojev Kamen), Lece (Medvedja) and Veliki Cip (Boranja) û are dominated by Cu and/or Pb-Zn mineralisation that contains a variety of Pb, Zn, Cu and Fe (¦ Sb, As, Bi) sulfides and sulfosalts, as well as native elements. Gangue minerals are composed of quartz, carbonates and rare silicates and barite. Based on their gold content these deposits can be divided in three groups:1. Polymetallic deposits with a high gold content (>1 g/t).2. Polymetallic deposits with an intermediate gold content (0.1 to 1 g/t), and3. Polymetallic deposits with a low gold content (<0.1 g/t). Gold occurs as native gold or as an alloy with silver. Native gold ranges in size from 5 to 20 ¦m, with a few rare grains over 100 ¦m, as isolated grains or as microveins (in the first group of deposits). Its distribution within the deposit in uneven. Native gold in the second group is smaller in size (1 - 5 ¦m, rarely 20 ¦m), where it is uniformly distributed in a quartz-silicate matrix. The third group is of no economical importance. The subject of research has been the first group of polymetallic deposits.

The physical properties of monazite and the minerals with which it is associated in east coast beach sands are studied and discussed. Possible means for improving recovery are examined. In particular, it is suggested that the practice of splitting the heavy mineral concentrate into two parts as a preliminary to treatment in separate "rutile" and "zircon" mills can be modified in a simple fashion by the addition of an extra magnetic separation stage so as to aid monazite recovery.INTRODUCTIONBeach sand deposits on the east coast of Australia are a major source of rutile and zircon, and supply 80 per cent or more of world requirements. The deposits also contain a small amount of monazite, averaging about 0.5 per cent of the total heavy minerals. Yet despite a steady price in recent years of £150-160 per ton, monazite production has remained relatively small.On the basis of rutiIe production, potential monazite production on the east coast was about 1,500 tons in 1956, but only 102 tons of high-grade concentrate was produced. The main deterrent to increased production has probably been the capital cost of the necessary equipment. Separate electrostatic and magnetic equipment and separate table concentration and drying constitute a considerable outlay for a by-product contributing 4 to 5 per cent of the revenue from rutiIe.It is the purpose of this paper to discuss monazite concentration generally and to suggest modifications to flowsheets, which may facilitate monazite production while maintaining the main objective, simple and cheap means for maximum rutile production.

With the rapid development of the Chinese steel industry, the strong demand for iron ores has led to huge imports of various iron ores from all over the world. As a relatively new force in the iron ore world and an important raw material supplier, Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) has achieved an annualised production rate of 100 Mt of iron ore fines. Typical blends were designed to simulate sinter blends employed in Chinese steel mills, and to determine sintering properties and metallurgical performance of blends comprising FMG Rocket fines in pilot sinter pot. It is shown that the sinter of typical blends comprising 15 - 20 per cent rocket fines possesses excellent sintering properties and metallurgical performance. With Rocket fines substitution for competitor ores in a typical customer mill blend comprising fully imported fines, the sinter productivity and tumble index increased from 1.45 t/m2h and 62.0 per cent to 1.54 t/m2h and 64.0 per cent, respectively, while attaining similar reducibility index and reduction degradation index at lower solid fuel consumption.CITATION:Zhu, D, Guo, Z, Ooi, T C, Chun, T, Pan, J and Young, J M, 2013. Pellets were produced from carefully sized iron ore and silica sand fractions, under controlled moisture conditions, using a sealed balling drum. The strength of these pellets was measured as a function of moisture content and particle size. The results showed that the strength of the pellets could be adequately described by a model which equates the strength of the pellets with the negative pressure developed within the porous mass, provided that the particle size distribution was narrow and the mean particle size relatively large. IN the present paper it is the writer's intention to largely confine the subject-matter to details relating to the metallurgical practice in connection W,ith the blast roasting of lead ores at the Port PiJ;ie works of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. rather than to elaborate on mechanical plant details which are more or less standard equipment of the average Dwight and Lloyd or Huntington-Heberlein blast roasting installations (hereinafter referred to in the text as D. & L. and I.I. & H. respectively). The present blast roasting plant is a combination ot D. & L. straight line machines and IQ-ton H. & H. pots. The latter installation was an operating unit prior to the introduction of the D. & L. machines, the pre-roasting then being accomplished in Ropp roasting furnaces.On the introduction of the D. & L. machines the use of the Ropp roasting furnaces as a pre-roasting unit was discontinued, and this step of the process was then carried out on one section of the D. & L. installation.Consequently, then, the present plant consists of (1) A section of D. & L. machines, which operate solely as a pre-roastiIig unit. (2) A section of D. & L. machines which operate to their full capacity as 3, final roasting unit and treat the main portion of the pre-roasted material.
