An experimental and theoretical study has been made of the drainage behaviour of two-dimensional packed beds drained from an outlet in the sidewall of the bed in order to identify the fundamental me- chanisms involved. Under these conditions a grad- ient develops in the air-liquid interface in the direction of flow with the interface tilting towards the outlet. This results in a significant volume of liquid being retained in the packing on completion of draining when the interface first reaches the bed outlet. Residual liquid volume and the shape of the air-liquid interface as a function of time were det- ermined experimentally in a two-dimensional packed bed where the packing consisted of glass spheres ranging in size from 0.6 to 10 mm dia. and the bed was drained at superficial liquid velocities rang- ing from 0.007 to 0.32cm/s. The test liquids used were water, glycerine/water solutions and kerosene resulting in a viscosity range of 1 to 10 mPa.s and a surface tension range of 0.0243 to 0.072 N/m. Assuming laminar flow within the bed, a compu- tational model was developed to predict both the liquid residual ratio and the temporal evolution of the drainage profile within the bed. The computed results were in good agreement with the experimental data over the entire range of conditions invest- igated. the computational model was used to estimate the relative importance of the effects of changes in hearth conditions on residual slag volume for typ- ical blast furnace operating conditions. On the basis of the computed results it is concluded that coke quality is a major parameter affecting hearth drainage performance.

Theoretical and experimental studies have been made-to clarify the physical and chemical behavior of the tuyere combustion zone of blast furnace. Gas streamlines around this zone were visualized by the use of the two-dimensional equip- ment. Close agreement between the observed stream- lines and the calculated ones is found. The three- dimensional experimental studies have revealed that there exists a so-called dry zone in the neighbor- hood of the raceway and the trickling liquid be- haves approximately like a continuum. A kinetic model is develdped to describe the behavior of coke combustion in the tuyere zone. The model is based on the reaction kinetics, the differential balances of heat and mass, and the mechanics of gas flows. Regarding-the-axial distribution of gas composition in the tuyere zone, good agreement is obtained be- tween the model prediction and the data observed in a working furnace by the other investigators. Cal- culated results-show that the maximum consumption of coke occurs at the intermediate region of the raceway. For the blowing of oxygen-enriched or high -humidity blast, the position at which the maximum consumption of coke occurs is shifted toward the tuyere nose. Similar effect is found when the par- ticle diameter of coke in the tuyere zone is de- creased. The paper describes a new process for filtration which combines the continuous operation of conventional vacuum filters with the low final moisture contents hitherto only achievable with plate and frame presses. The increasingly high portion of fine particles causes several problems in the filtration of copper concentrates. One drawback is that remarkable quantities of liquid are attached to the very fine particles because of their specific surface area. Furthermore, fine particles also reduce the size of the capillaries in the filter cake, thus increasing the critical pressure which any filtration system has to exceed to achieve the desired final cake moisture. The maximum filtration pressure of conventional vacuum filters is limited by nature itself and by practical aspects to approximately 0.75 bar. The hyperbaric filter combines the continuous operating principle with an increase in filtration pressure of up to 6 bar simply by placing the entire disc or drum filter inside a pressure vessel. The major machine components and process features are explained in the details of the paper. After extensive research and field testing, 23 ANDRITZ hyperbaric filters, with a total filtration area of 1968 m2 have now been sold. Seventeen of these units (1440 m2) are in commercial use and more units are, on order. Performance data on copper concentrates from plants in Australia, South America, Poland, Africa and North America are outlined in detail. One of the most difficult places to ventil ate in any mine is the working face area of an advancing mine heading. With an ever changing configuration, continual modification and extension to the ventilation system is necess- ary to maintain an adequate supply of fresh air and to control mixing and recirculation. Methane emissions and high dust levels as coal is broken and removed from the face area can produce unhealthy and dangerous conditions if ventilat- ion is not adequately monitored. An understanding of the air flow patterns which develop through use of different face ven- tilation systems can be reached by undertaking underground measurements or through observations using physical models. Tests undertaken by the author to determine the adequacy of different system-configurations are discussed together with approaches adopted by others working in the United States. Various new methods have been proposed for improving face ventilation beyond that sustained using conventional brattice curtain or tubing systems. The adequacy of some advances adopted by mining companies to improve ventilation while maintaining output efficiency is discussed.

Since its commercial in Australia at Broken Hill in the early part of the 20th century, the flotation process has grown to become the single most important minerals separation method available to mineral processing engineers. Statistics on flotation are impressive both in terms of growth of tonnages treated and in terms of the variety of separations accomplished. Because of the steady decline in the grade of ores and because many of the ores remaining are finely disseminated mixtures of minerals (many of them in a highly oxidized state) mineral processing scientists and engineers are now con- fronted with the problem of improving and modifying conventional flotation techniques so as to be able to effic- iently process these more refractory types of-ores. The flotation process did not come into being as the result of an intensive fundamental research effort but, in a similar way to so many other methods used in the processing of raw materials, it was developed over the years by the continued application of empirical methods. As a result, most of the basic research in this field has long been concerned with the problem of explaining why the existing process works so well. We are now at the stage where any further substan- tial extension of the flotation process will demand a more profound understanding of its fundamental principles. The western Cordillera of North America, including more than 99% of Alaska, is made up of an agglomeration of litho-tectonic terranes, some of which have undergone large rotations and (or) translations. The larger terranes can be broadly grouped into a small number of composite terranes based on affinities in their lithology, structure, and tectonic evolution. The terranes reflect repeated episodes of marginal rifting as well as formation of marginal arcs, island arc chains, back-arc basins, and oceanic plateaus since late Proterozoic time. Accretion to the continental margin occurred mainly from Middle Triassic through Early Cretaceous time. Major northward dispersal of terranes was largely during the existence of the Kula plate from about 85-55 Ma. Major rotations are the mid-Cretaceous opening of the Arctic Ocean basin with counterclockwise rotation of Arctic Alaska and Laramide oroclinal bending of western Alaska. The present complex Cordilleran geology along the northeast Pacific rim is a sum of these earlier accretionary processes together with continued Cenozoic faulting and deformation that has been superimposed upon the agglomerated displaced terranes over a broad segment of the continental margin.

The CIP process for gold recovery has enjoyed widespread application in most gold-producing countries. The development of a mathematical model of the CIP process has value for use in process design, process optimisation, and process control. Mathematical model development through laboratory experimentation is an important step in the design and optimisation of the CIP process. For this purpose, data has been generated through small scale laboratory leaching and adsorption tests both in batch and continuous mode. This test program has been carried out on specific ores of various types prior to the application of the models to production CIP plants utilising these ores. The applicability of leaching models derived from batch experiments was tested in a continuous five stage CIP pilot plant. The models were then adapted to scale-up the batch to the small scale continuous operation.

The need to solve the problems associated with spontaneous combustion, system of ventil- ation and methane drainage in gassy coal mines has brought about the development of mining and degassing methods which has made possible up to 80% gas recovery in retreating longwalls. Beneficial results also were obtained mostly in the double or multiple-entry systems, but for single-entry systems and for a seam thickness exceeding 3 m, gas recovery rate is still very low. With some single-heading systems, such as those where a return roadway is not maintained in the goaf behind the face line, a new methane drainage technology is practiced. Attempts were made to extract methane from roof holes drilled from offsets in the ribside of the longwall block. The inclinations and lengths of the boreholes were planned and designed on the basis of the geological and mining condit- ions encountered at the time and every second hole was terminated precisely at the point where the previous hole intersected the immed- iate roof goaf area above the face. There are mathematical relations approp- riate to the design of the above drainage systems to give optimum methane recovery under the given conditions. Some examples of drainage have reached 87% recovery and have attained 94% CH4 purity.

The aim of these analyses was to utilise the latest available production information for the Wandoo operation to determine the optimal blasting parameters, costing information and predicted results (fragmentation, muckpile shape and vibration). Much of the data used as input was made available from the information gathered during the excavation of the test pits during 1995. As with any æplanning stageÆ analyses, many assumptions were required to fill gaps in the available data. The calibration of computer blasting models was conducted using data from the last of the test pit blasts (this blast was carried out in material that closely resembled rock expected to constitute the bulk of the base case design pit). This calibration was refined using observation and experience based judgements to extend the accuracy of the predictions as far as possible. All the simulations were performed assuming that the blastholes will be wet (as instructed by BGM). This has consequently determined that the appropriate explosive for the simulations and the actual blasting will be a pumped emulsion/ANFO blend. The following blast design parameters were derived by determining a likely range of powder factor (from other similar scale gold mines) with a median value of 0.62 kg/m 3 being the powder factor arrived at through the field optimisation process conducted during the test pit excavation. The total swell/displacement percentage (volume after blast/volume before blast) largely determines the diggability of a well fragmented muckpile. Consequently where fragmentation is good any reduction of total swell will probably reduce diggabilty. Any reduction of diggability can and should be traded off against increased gold recovery. In most gold mines, diggabilty will be substantially compromised at the balance which produces the most profit. When these considerations are combined with the cost to drill and blast material, processing costs and the achievement of æacceptableÆ diggibility, the analysis becomes extremely complex and qualitative. Many trends are evident including:the relationship between powder factor (for each blast design) and maximum forward displacement (throw), see Figure 1; and the relationship between powder factor (for each blast design) and drill and blast cost per BCM, see Figure 2. The following blast designs are matched to each of three ore-tonnage alternatives (as supplied by BGM) (Table 1). They are all based on powder factor of 0.62 kg/BCM and are considered optimum from a mining æpoint of viewÆ. The costing of each design includes drilling, explosives and labour cost to load, stem and tie-in holes. Using the available rock data and relying heavily on the wall exposures in the test pit(s), it is the opinion of the author that between 20 per cent to 40 per cent of the final walls excavated in the Wandoo pit would be likely to have the angle between the dominant foliation and the wall plane that is well suited to presplitting and be cost-effectively served by presplit technique. The drilling cost for 125 mm blasthole is about $11.40 per drilled metre and the cost of 40 mm presplit explosive is about $140 per 25 kg (17 metre) case. This implies that the cost to drill and blast presplit on the above parameters would be about $10.90 per square metre of presplit face. The remaining wall area would be most cost-effectively delineated using modified production blasting techniques. This requires the use of modified parameters such as smaller hole diameters, smaller spacing/ burden, higher powder factor, free face firing, less rows per blast and longer delays. These altered blast parameters would usually be applied uniformly across the entire blast fired adjacent to the wall and this ætrimÆ blast would relieve burden away from the wall, into the pit. In simplest terms, this method relies upon maximised burden relief to minimise blast energy applied to the wall. It is only applicable where the material to be blasted is waste since the throw achieved is inconsistent with ore dilution control. The largest charge weight per hole for these analyses is 360 kg and the nearest domestic structure to the proposed Wandoo pit is about 6100 metres distant. From these parameters and assuming a worst case example of rock controlled site factor, the predicted ground vibration is 0.5 mm/sec that is about five per cent of the lower limit set down in AS 2187 part two (1993). This suggests that for the current location of neighbours, ground vibration will not be an issue for the Wandoo operation.

The crystal chemistry of carbonate in Ca apatites, including Na-free and Na-bearing hydroxylapatite (CHAP) and Na-bearing fluorapatite (CFAP) and chlorapatite (CCLAP), has been investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray structure, using crystals synthesised from carbonate-rich melts at 1 GPa, 1400 - 1000¦C. The carbonate ion substitutes for both the X (OH, F, Cl) anion species in the apatite channel (type A carbonate) and the phosphate group (type B carbonate). The type A carbonate ion is oriented in the channel with two oxygen atoms close to the c-axis, and the type B carbonate ion is located close to the sloping faces of the substituted phosphate tetrahedron, with details varying with composition series. Sodium promotes the uptake of type B carbonate and also has a profound effect on FTIR spectra. Crystal compositions correspond approximately to the substitution formula Ca10-(y+z)Nay z[(PO4)6-(y+2z)(CO3)y+2z][X2-2x(CO3)x], with x + y up to 1.0 and z + 0.0 for CHAP, x + y + 4z + 0.4 for CCLAP, and x + y + 2z + 0.1 for CFAP, for equivalent conditions of synthesis. The sodium cation and A and B carbonate ion defects are locally coupled in all three composition series to facilitate charge compensation and minimise the effects of spatial accommodation. Synthetic Na-bearing type A-B CHAP with x + y + 0.5 has a similar chemical composition and FTIR spectrum to biological apatite.

Resources added to the global metal inventory through exploration over the past 15 years have been generally of poor quality (declining grades, recoveries and lack of acceptable financial return). Similarly, companies opting for an acquisitions-based strategy have had to pick from a group of poorer quality resources left from previous exploration booms, and will struggle to deliver this metal to market economically. Increasing difficulty in obtaining sufficient social and community acceptance of mining projects and potentially an energy-constrained future may exacerbate this problem, redefining what is considered ‘ore’. There will need to be more focus on deposit quality, defined as sustainable margin in the future business environment.Traditionally there has been a lack of translation of ‘mineralisation quality’ back to mineral project design and mineral exploration. This disconnect is due to two main factors: the first is technical – inherent deposit variability; and the second is organisational and socio-psychological –the mindset of explorers and project managers themselves.There are four elements to value realisation for a mineral deposit: (1) social licence to operate; (2) geological factors (depth, geometry, water and geotechnical, and geometallurgy – influenced by texture, mineralogy, chemistry and grades); (3) financial engineering (capex, opex, future commodity prices, future energy prices), and (4) operating factors (production rate, recovery, energy consumption). These elements are strongly interdependent, and geology underpins and drives linkages between them. A quality deposit addresses all of these elements and thus can be developed in a time frame that allows acceptable returns to the owners of the invested capital.Geological drivers of the above elements can be measured and mapped throughout a deposit. Moreover, when viewed in the context of mineral systems, a predictive understanding of the common causative processes of quality (despite deposit-scale variability) is emerging, and with it the ability to target quality of mineralisation, not just quantity of mineralisation.The second factor is a ‘heuristic software problem’. Current lines of education (and consequently organisational and professional structures) are discipline-based, producing ‘silos’ that do not speak each other’s language and work with different ‘mental models’. People who effectively recognise systemic links between these silos are called ‘boundary spanners’, of which we propose two distinct types: outside-insiders and inside-outsiders. Outside-insiders are people who are within a community, but recognise advances in outside fields and effectively integrate them into the community. Inside-outsiders start outside of a community, and successfully bring new ideas into it. Common traits in boundary spanners are: they seek exposure to (and embrace) key ideas that are outside of the framework of their own specialisation; they have high mental processing ability (MPA) – the ability to connect systems that are currently not perceived to be connected; and they introduce ideas from outside a field into a new context in a way that re-frames the field.The challenge is to identify and nurture potential boundary spanners that can build critical links, in particular between the (largely geoscientific) mineral exploration mindset and the (largely non-geoscientific) project development mindset. To increase the efficiency and improve the quality of diamond drilling at Olympic Dam, mine geologists have adapted and modified common practices in order to overcome the challenges imposed by such a unique environment. Mine geologists have to take into account both the complex geology during the diamond drill hole design phase, as well as incorporating diamond drilling into the larger-scale scheduling process already employed at Olympic Dam. This study seeks to explore how such modifications have evolved over time.The geology of Olympic Dam influences the design process of diamond drill holes, particularly due to the variation of lithology and alteration, as well as the presence of magnetite and major structures within the orebody. Exclusion zones are used to manage interactions with existing and planned mining activities, and their size is dependent upon the geology of the area. Specific deviation checks are used to monitor the deviation of diamond drill holes with respect to these?zones.The highly interactive environment of Olympic Dam requires unique planning for diamond drilling, resulting in the production and implementation of both long- and short-term schedules. Long-term schedules are targeted at determining drilling locations and ensuring drilling is completed prior to stope planning, while short-term schedules aid in enabling access to ensure timely set-up of drill sites. Estimated drilling rates, determined by expected lithologies and historical data, feed into the short-term schedule to assist in managing the operation and minimising the downtime of diamond drill rigs. A mine geologist is appointed as a diamond drill coordinator to organise and manage diamond drilling at a scheduling and operational level, streamlining the entire process.Analysis of historical data shows a strong correlation between implementation of the aforementioned practices and improved drilling rates. This study shows the importance of adapting universal tasks to particular environments and circumstances. Mine geologists at Olympic Dam continue to acquire knowledge to further improve the modified drilling practices as operational requirements, production pressures and economic factors change.CITATION:Taylor, J and Dubowik, A, 2014. "A new approach to mineral project evaluation is described called Scenario-Based Project Evaluation (SBPE). SBPE incorporates well established æscenario planningÆ and æscenario thinkingÆ approaches, which are used extensively in other industries,?most notably the?petroleum industry. While most scenario planning is qualitative and non-probabilistic, the approach described here includes both quantitative and qualitative aspects. SBPE is complementary to optimisation approaches and allows mining firms to build and operate projects that are more robust in the face of adverse changes as well as proactively respond and exploit the upside offered by a realistic assessment of variability. The approach has potential to improve project performance and decrease operational risk. It also has important applications for currently operating mines.Conventional evaluation of metalliferous mineral deposits uses estimates of metal grades and deleterious attributes in singular æorebody modelsÆ, usually 3D block models, which fail to capture two critical aspects that underpin the realised value of mining projects: the inherent uncertainty of the estimated attributes the spatial variability of attributes, at the scale of mining selection, which impact on downstream processing steps and fundamentally drive realised value. While singular models are appropriate for estimating block averages, conditional simulation (CS) models of the relevant attributes are needed to represent uncertainty and capture spatial variability. Any attributes that can be either built into CS models and/or modelled in the envisaged mining/processing steps, can be evaluated fully through to highly ægranularÆ (ie detailed and un-smoothed) cash flows. A complete view of SBPE relies on selected strategies being tested against plausible æscenariosÆ of factors external to the project and thus outside management control. æExternalitiesÆ captured in such scenarios include market prices, costs and taxes. Via SBPE, project managers may demonstrate that there is material value in preserving or purchasing options that provide future flexibility to respond to the changing externalities or changes in orebody performance. Such flexibility generally comes at a cost but is very difficult to value. It is argued that full value chain evaluation using SBPE can help to value these options for a mining company. The metallurgical has been discussed sufficiently for the reader to follow the course of the experiments but the actual plant has only been described in so far as it effected metallurgical treatment, since the arrangement of such a smelter is a matter of common knowledge.The lead-roasting plant consisted of Godfrey roaster, Dwight-Lloyd maehines and Huntingdon-Heberlein pots. The usual treatment was in the Godfrey furnaces, followed by sintering in the Huntingdon- Heberlein pots. The paper is divided into two parts in the Godfrey furnaces and Huntingdon-Heberlein pots. The Lanfranchi Nickel mine is located approximately 48 km south of Kambalda in Western Australia. Mining first commenced in the mid-1970s under the previous owner, Western Mining Corporation Ltd. After two years on care and maintenance, Panoramic Resources (previously known as Sally Malay Mining Ltd) purchased the operation in November 2004. The site currently produces approximately 10?000 tonnes of nickel metal annually from approximately 430?000 tonnes of ore. The Ore is mined from four main orebodies; Deacon, Helmut South, Lanfranchi and Schmitz. The Helmut South orebody is situated approximately 790 m below surface and extends to a resource depth of 940 m. Horizontal thickness of the orebody ranges from 10 m to 45 m in width, with the average being 30 m. Previous mining at the Lanfranchi operations specifically the Helmut orebody, had a history of seismic activity. When Panoramic Resources acquired the operation it was decided that seismicity was going to be an issue and therefore a mining method needed to be selected that could effectively manage this potential risk. The dip of the orebody is quite shallow at 45º, with a 30º plunge to the south . The hanging-wall comprises of very weak ultramafics. Due to these factors the orebody posed several mining challenges. To safely and effectively mine the Helmut South orebody in the Lanfranchi Nickel mine, underhand cut and fill mining was selected as the most appropriate mining method. Paste fill comprising of cemented gold tailings was the backfill of choice. This paper is intended to convey some of the key learnings from the use of a mining method that has not been commonly practiced in Australia.

Australia’s ageing population means that by 2050 there will be 2.7 people of working age to support each Australian aged 65 years and over compared with five working people per retiree today and compared with 7.5 in 1970 (Swan, 2010). This means that there is going to be a greater demand on social services – for medical and aged care – from a smaller private income base. How will this gap be met? Australia is fortunate in that it has vast resources of mineral wealth; from iron ore, nickel and gas in Western Australia to the giant copper and uranium deposits at Olympic Dam in South Australia.The prospect of a meaningful profit based tax on this vast mineral wealth has been lost through Australian government’s handling of the issue in 2010 and with an industry fiercely opposed to the prospect of a mining tax. Hence, new ways of thinking are required. This paper looks at the issues facing the implementation of a novel scheme whereby Australia leases the mineral resources it extracts and thus derives income over the decades the metals are in-use in pipes, wires and structures with a premium paid for unreturned material or that used in dissipative applications. Applicable minerals could include copper, aluminium, nickel and rare earths. If Australia simply digs up and sells the metals once, the buyer becomes custodian of that resource and they benefit from controlling the future ‘above-ground’ resource stock.A complementary driver for a leasing scheme is the increasing importance of chain-of-custody following initiatives of the Responsible Jewellery Council with gold and diamonds, now with the potential to extend across commodities. The Australian minerals sector could thus position itself as a premium supplier with high social and environmental credentials.Recognising the implementation challenges, this paper includes a review of how such a system could be enforced to ensure that the metal is tracked throughout its life. It concludes with a discussion of the rates and terms should such agreements hold and suggestions for institutional arrangements for enforcing compliance.

A description is given of a detailed examination of a coal bore core and of attempts to predict properties of equivalent "as-mined" coal using the bore core data so obtained. The accuracy of the prediction was measured by testing independently a large sample of coal which was produced under near mining conditions from a site adjacent to the bore core. Very encouraging results were obtained particularly in the prediction of size and ash distributions and washability characteristics of run-of-mine Coal.

The Macraes mine is producing 175 000 ounces Au/year from a mesothermal deposit with total resource of at least five million ounces. The deposit is hosted in greenschist facies Otago Schist, a widespread Mesozoic metasedimentary sequence that forms the basement of the South Island of New Zealand. Mineralisation was controlled by a late metamorphic shear zone which had both brittle and ductile structures accompanying mineralisation. The shear zone dips shallowly (about 15¦), subparallel to the shallow-dipping regional foliation, and mineralization occurred during southwesterly-directed thrust motion. Mineralisation occurred under greenschist facies conditions (about 350¦C) during uplift of the Otago Schist in the late Jurassic. No syn- or late-metamorphic igneous bodies occur within the schist belt. The hosting shear zone is up to 120 m thick, and is traceable for more than 30 km along strike. The shear zone is truncated by an underlying low angle normal fault that juxtaposes mineralised lower greenschist facies rocks on to unmineralised upper greenschist facies rocks.

Mining operations require detailed and precise methods and procedures for the optimum selection of ore from waste. A fundamental procedure applied to achieve this selection is accurate sampling. The key parameter to accurate sampling is an understanding of the degree of heterogeneity of the key element contained within a sampling mass. This paper will describe the methods applied for the calculation of the fundamental sampling error and the techniques used to achieve a representative sample in the Fimiston Open Pit, Kalgoorlie.The utilisation of Pierre Gy's sampling theory has optimised the blast hole sample quality and quantity for submission to the assay laboratory. This has resulted in reduced cost and optimised assay reliability in statistical terms. Similarly the analysis of exploration drill holes for resource definition has optimised drilling procedures in terms of the drilling method, sample length and sample quantity.

Development in the theory and practice of hearth drainage is reviewed. Difficulties in the hearth drainage were re- newed during late sixties and early seventies when the size of a blast furnace and the top pressure were increased to result in the increase in tapping rate. Hearth drainage was improved first by in- creased number of tapping and then decreased tapping rate as it was predicted by theoretical studies. State of the coke bed in the hearth, e.g., 'floating' or 'sitting-on' the hearth bottom, is discussed in relation with influential factors on it and its influence on the furnace operation. The 'sitting-on' coke bed is to be aimed at for the consistent furnace working and for the lower rate of erosion of the hearth refractory. As the continuous tapping became standard prac- tice in large blast furnaces, the interest in the basic research renewed. Prospect of the further research including mathematical modelling of the hearth drainage is discussed.
