Historically, most of the gold produced from Kalgoorlie has been derived from the gold and gold telluride Golden Mile lode systems dominantly hosted within the Golden Mile Doler-ite and to a lesser extent, Paringa Basalt. In more recent times the gold-quartz stockwork ore bodies within Unit 8 of the Golden Mile Dolerite at Mt Charlotte have become increasingly imp-ortant.Extensive low grade gold mineralisation has now been defined to the north and east of Kalgoorlie within rock units of the Golden Mile sequence not generally considered to be highly prospective.Two main types of mineralisation have been defined. The first comprises variably mineralised and altered quartz-albite porphyr-ies emplaced within talc-carbonated Hannans Lake Serpentinite (Mystery deposit). There is intense fuchsitic, pyritic and carbonate alter-ation of the serpentinite adjacent to the porphyry bodies. Gold mineralisation is assoc-iated with fine-grained disseminations and veinlets of pyrite and narrow quartz and quartz-tourmaline veining within the porphyry and adjacent fuchsite-carbonate rock. The Yallourn North Extension (YNX) open cut mine ceased mining operations in early 1989. YNX may be used again for coal supply at the discretion of the Coal Corporation Of Victoria (CCV); this has resulted in the need for interim rehabilitation of the site which may last many years, or indeed, permanently.The site has suffered substantial surface erosion over the years with large areas of bare clay and coal batters remaining exposed. The first priority is to reduce the quantity and improve the quality of stormwater runoff from the site. This is best achieved by appropriate revegetation and the use of existing landform depressions as silt trap/wetland areas. Proposed rehabilitation needed to take into account the sensitive fire safety of the open cut and the option to re-open the mine if CCV deems appropriate.The authors detail the factors involved in the rehabilitation proposal and the multi-disciplinary approach to planning including engineers, scientists, a forester, landscape architects and community input. The rehabilitation design included early consideration of land use and ongoing maintenance issues linked to water quality improvement factors including vegetation. Engineering input was required for reshaping and clay covering exposed coal batters and the design of silt traps which will revert to wetlands in future. The integration of each discipline has produced a rehabilitation design pleasing to both the SECV and community alike.

Biomineralisation is the process by which microorganisms mediate and catalyse inorganic reactions so as to form new mineral assemblages. The goal of biomineralisation as a remediation tool is to control microbial processes and their environment so as to sequester and immobilise specific toxic metals within exceptionally strong bonds of neo-formed mineral assemblages. In this way, the bound metals are no longer mobile within a geological time-scale. Applied biomineralisation uses microorganisms, which are isolated from a metal waste environment and are selected for their ability to rapidly catalyse neo-mineral development from dissolved or leachable metals. A typical waste environment will contain microbes that contribute to the mobilisation of metal contaminants as well as microbes that possess the potential for remineralising available metals. Selection and augmenting the correct combination of bacteria and eliminating the competing mineral degrading reactions are the key to applying biomineralisation as an in situ remediation process. Applied biomineralisation harnesses the microbesÆ ability to stabilise toxic soluble metals into non-mobile mineralassemblages. This paper will discuss and demonstrate the biomineralisation process through several case studies including the Summitville mine site in Colorado, the McCoy-Cove mine in Nevada, the Argonaut mine in California, and an historic lead site in Crooksville, Ohio.

Favona is a blind low-sulfidation epithermal vein deposit in the Waihi Vein System approximately two kilometres east of the world class Martha Hill deposit that has produced nearly 6.8 M oz Au to date. The Favona epithermal system has surface expression in variously altered and mineralised hydrothermal eruption breccias forming a series of low hills that are windows through post mineral dacites and ignimbrites. The tip line of the Favona vein is about 50 û 100 m below surface with a steeply east dipping principal vein structure carrying numerous hanging wall splays in the upper flatter section and thickening down dip where the vein steepens. Host rocks comprise feldspar phyric andesite flows with minor pyroclastics. Although Favona has a strike length in excess of 1000 m and vein widths up to 25 m over a vertical range in excess of 400 m it was only recently discovered after nearly thirty years of exploration by various companies involved in the Martha Hill joint venture that operates the Martha Mine. Since discovery in 2001 a feasibility study based on 27.5 km of diamond drilling in 83 holes has been completed reporting a reserve of 1 Mt @ 10 g/t Au against a resource of 1.8 Mt @ 10.3 g/t Au. Exploration is continuing with a further 20.5km of diamond drilling completed to date on nearby prospects.

The heavy media cyclones at Argyle Diamonds are subjected to extremely abrasive service conditions and have been the subject of a development program from the time the first ore was treated in the AKl processing plant. In the past ten years the cyclones have been re-engineered from a standard DSM design, in which some components would only last four days, to the current Argyle design in which the minimum component life is 175 days. Development has focused upon the elimination of turbulence in the cyclone and combating unavoidable abrasion through the use of appropriate wear materials.

Examination of the geology and support performance at two site leads to development of an under tanding of the influence of caving on powered support rating. The two site represent the current extremes in support rating, i.e. 6/260 tonne supports operating in the Hirst seam at Solsgirth Colliery, Scotland, and 4/900 tonne supports operating in the Bulli seam, West Cliff Colliery, Australia.A conceptual model considers the coal ahead of the face, the powered support, and the caved waste to be three yielding foundations which interact to control the subsidence of the roof strata.The caving mechanisms identified for the strata of the Hirst and Bulli seams, are different. These mechanisms being related to rock properties - the palaegeography and depositional conditions at each site-produce caved wastes with different yield characteristics.An analysis of the results obtained for convergence and support reaction during production cycles at both sites shows the manner in which support reaction is developed, indicating the importance of higher setting load densities in the Bulli seam.Evaluation of the work done on the subsiding roof strata during typical production cycles by two of the yielding foundations the powered support and the caved waste immediately behind the powered support - further demonstrates the influence of caving mechanisms on support rating.

This paper describes the use of a wavefront reinforcement model which has been developed to supplement established charge mass scaling methods. The model allows for the time taken for blast vibration wavefronts to travel from each blasthole, and has been successfully used to explain the reason for directional increases in both air and ground vibration in certain situations. The model has been used to identify wavefront reinforcement due to the propagation of air vibration and ground vibrations in certain situations. The paper includes a throw (or cast) blasting case history which provides multi-station evidence of the strong directional nature of wavefront reinforcement.

Control of complex machinery through the internet is investigated through the construction of a vehicle prototype developed using off-the- shelf hardware. The vehicle was able to be controlled remotely through the use of a client side interface connected to a steering wheel and foot pedals. By attaching sensors to the vehicle, data could be collected from which one could infer the effectiveness of such a control system. The effect of latency on control was monitored by the introduction of an artificial latency, simulating a wide variety of internet-related issues, such as unstable connections and dropouts. Sensor data could then be used to gain an understanding of how the system could be improved though either control or interface design. A path tracking experiment was conducted to gather controllability data and it was found that such a system is plausible within a reasonable range of latencies. It is expected an area of future research would be an extension of this current project, applying the information gained to real world control systems.

Records of ex-solution intergrowths with tetrahedrite as a component are rare. Intergrowths of this nature of tetrahedrite with galena have been described by Guild (1917) and Schneiderhohn (1922), and in Broken Hill ore by Stillwell (1926), but both Schneiderhohn (1922) and Gruner (1929) have commented specifically on the apparent absence of exsolution intergrowths of tetrahedrite and chalcopyrite, despite their frequent association in ores, and their related atomic structures. Schwartz (1942), reviewing the literaturerelating to ex-solution among ore minerals, lists only two instances of such intergrowths, one an occurrence of lamellae of chalcopyrite oriented along the octahedral planes of tentantite (the arsenical isomorph of tetrahedrite), the other of blebs of tetrahedrite in stannite. Geologists use large data sets and spend many hours and much computing time modelling the distribution of minerals throughout a rock mass. Significant investments in drilling, assaying and quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) are made before sophisticated geostatistical techniques are applied to the collected data. A large amount of research has been done in this field such that the ore control model is a reasonably accurate reflection of the mineral that is actually in the ground. However, after all this effort, the mining engineers then work just as diligently to blast the in situ rock mass to a particle size that can be efficiently handled and further reduced by downstream comminution processes. In open cut mines, this invariably requires large amounts of explosive energy that displaces the ore boundaries from where the geologists originally defined them. Failure to accurately account for blast movement will result in misclassification, whether that is ore to waste; low grade to high grade; sulfide to oxide; or other contaminates û collectively referred to as ore loss and dilution. The financial consequence of getting this wrong is substantial and not well quantified. This diminishes all of the good geological QA/QC done in defining the ore. This paper discusses various technologies used to physically measure blast-induced orebody movement and the difficulties in modelling this with a purely theoretical approach. Rock mass structure, blast energy, design and timing contours all have significant and interrelated effects on blast movement vectors. Measured blast movement has a large variance due to the uncertainly of many of the controlling parameters û arguably dominated by the heterogeneous nature of the rock mass. Although there have been significant advances in blast movement modelling capability in recent years, this unpredictable blast movement limits their use in the context of production ore control. The central Taupo Volcanic Zone is a region of intense Quaternary silicic volcanism accompanying rapid crustal extension. Modem central TVZ is the most frequently active and productive silicic volcanic system on Earth, erupting rhyolite at c. 0.28 m' s'. The rhyolites show no major compositional changes with time, but the total extent of magma chamber zonation has changed with the advent of rifting and crustal extension at c.0.7 Ma. At least 34 caldera-forming ignimbrite eruptions have formed a complex sequence of relatively short-lived, nested and/or overlapping volcanic centres in central TVZ. Taupo contrasts with other large silicic magmatic systems in the exceptionally high frequency, but small size, of caldera- forming eruptions. This contrast reflects the thin, rifted nature of the TVZ crust, that precludes the development of long- term magmatic cycles at Taupo.Within central TVZ, non-rhyolitic compositions have been erupted apparently irregularly in time and space; in particular there is no evidence for a geographic separation of basalts from andesites. TVZ is a rifted arc, but its segmented nature, high thermal flux and voluminous rhyolitic volcanism make it unique on Earth.

The Kyaukpahto gold deposit is located at latitude 23¦ 47Æ 55" N and longitude 95¦ 56Æ 35" E in the Kawlin-Wuntho district, Sagaing Division, Myanmar. Gold mineralisation is hosted in sandstone of the Male Formation (Eocene) and occurs as stockworks and disseminations. The high-grade gold mineralisation is locally concentrated in a breccia zone. The gold deposit is closely associated with a NNE-SSW trending fracture system that forms tensional open fractures. These tensional zones are thought to be directly related to the Sagiang transfer fault system that experienced several hundred kilometres of northward dextral movement during the post-Upper Miocene. Major sulfide minerals are pyrite and arsenopyrite with minor galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Gold mineralisation is associated with intense silicification, sericitisation and argillic alteration. Primary Type I fluid inclusions in the quartz from the mineralised zone are 5 to 15 ¦m across and yield homogenisation temperatures of 239¦ - 310¦C and salinities of 1.2 - 10.9 wt per cent NaCl equivalent. Laser Raman spectroscopic analysis indicates the presence of CO2 and CH4 in Type II fluid inclusions. Sulfur isotope analysis of disseminated pyrite in the ore zone by the laser ablation method indicates d34S values from -5.48ë to +5.53ë. The geology, alteration, ore mineralogy, fluid inclusion microthermometry and sulfur isotope data of the Kyaukpahto deposit are consistent with an epithermal ore deposit model for the deposit. However, the presence of CO2-liquid bearing fluids and the detectable CH4 in the gaseous phase of the fluid inclusions conflict with a typical epithermal origin for the Kyaukpahto deposit. The host siltstone and mudstone sequence, trace element geochemistry, and the disseminated nature of sulfide and gold mineralisation are also common characteristics of a sedimentary rock-hosted gold deposit, and these features may indicate a Carlin-like affinity. The Northwest Territories (NWT) of Canada has emerged as a major new province for diamond mineralisation in less than three years. This is primarily the product of a diligent search in the form of a scientifically based exploration effort. However other factors, including positive aspects of the business and the legal environment have also been identified as assisting the exploration process. In my view these have increased the likelihood of diamond mining becoming a major new industry for Canada. The supportive role of various government agencies has been important. In addition, the character of many of the joint venture deals that have been done has provided an attractive setting for the capital intensive evaluation and development work that is now required to bring the diamond discoveries into production. Perhaps of equal importance is that with the recognition that is being given to the success of the NWT diamond ventures, Canadian explorers are continuing to attract new risk capital for further exploration. This paper attempts to model and quantify the probability of exploration success translating into successful mine development.

There are a number of methods available for the determination of the fracture toughness of rock. Some of the most recognised methods include the hollow pressured cylinder, the short-rod, the chevron - edge-notched round bar in bending and the disc-shaped compact specimen. Most of these tests are difficult and expensive to conduct. In this paper the simple Brazilian testing of discs for tensile strength has been used to determine their fracture toughness. Tests were conducted on six different rock types and the values of the fracture toughness obtained for each type are in close agreement with the results of the well recognised the chevron edged types. The Rio Tinto (Mount Bruce Mining Pty Ltd) Koodaideri Iron Ore Project is located approximately 110 km north-west of Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. During detailed ecological studies of the project area, a significant maternity roost (containing around 430 individuals) of the Orange Leaf-nosed Bat (OLNB) (Rhinonicteris aurantius) was discovered within the boundaries of the proposed mining area. The OLNB is listed as Vulnerable under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and is listed as a Schedule 1 species under the Western Australian Wildlife Conservation Act 1950.With a good understanding of blast vibration attenuation in the Pilbara’s different geologies and in the absence of other known studies, it was considered that appropriate buffer distances between mining and bat colonies were not scientifically determined. Therefore, to inform the environmental approvals process that was underway, a series of seismic blasts was planned to assess and measure the sensitivity of the OLNB to trial-sized seismic blasting activities to develop a more scientifically based buffer zone for the protection of the OLNB. This was to be achieved by testing ground attenuation of the site and measuring any response from the OLNB to the firing of seismic charges. Rio Tinto sought the independent expertise of ecological consultants to evaluate and participate in the work to quantify the level of sensitivity of the bat colony and to outline the proposal to government authorities.After detailed risk assessment and project mapping, the seismic blasts were implemented, with the aim of firing individual charged and measured vector peak particle velocity (VPPV) at the OLNB roost cave, combined with monitoring OLNB disturbance activity within the roost that was invoked by the blasts. A series of six charges were fired with the VPPV ranging from 0.66 mms-1 to 18.70 mms-1. The OLNB activity was monitored using high frequency microphones, which detect bat calls emitted during flight. Under daytime conditions, the bats would normally be dormant, so the null hypothesis was for no calls to be detected if the bats displayed no disturbance behaviour. This work has improved understanding of mining activities (blasting) on the OLNB species, assisting in establishing mining exclusion zones that are based on scientific data, contributing to a sustainable future for both the environment and the mining industry.CITATION:Martin, D, 2015. Mining companies are increasingly faced with the challenge of reducing operating costs while maximising throughput and profitability. At the same time, the grade and quality of treated ores are becoming poorer and more variable, resulting in suboptimal process performance.It is now widely accepted that strategies to drive operational goals must revolve around improving plant availability, reliability and process efficiency. In particular, progress in plant automation and control systems has seen a trend towards unified frameworks for control and optimisation of mineral processing plants. These frameworks seek to seamlessly integrate different roles and tasks involved in process operations - IT, automation, plant maintenance and operations. An integrated solution framework for reducing process variability, increasing process efficiencies and maximising plant availability and reliability is discussed within the context of a typical milling circuit. The framework exploits a real-time analysis ægapÆ evident in production operations that prevents timeous identification of equipment and process failures. This is achieved by leveraging predictive analytics for equipment health monitoring, control loop monitoring and advanced regulatory control solutions towards enhanced process performance, improved asset management and regulatory compliance. The framework provides for early and actionable warnings on equipment and process degradation using real-time operational data.Resolving these problems can potentially avoid unplanned downtimes, process instabilities and other operational surprises, thus ensuring optimal plant throughput and optimal process behaviour for improved recoveries. Integrating control systems and plant automation with advanced analytics to analyse and optimise processes enables operations to achieve reductions in the variability of key process parameters. In addition, early detection of equipment malfunction or suboptimal process conditions leads to improved equipment availability and reliability. Ultimately, these operational gains reflect in profitability because of plant throughput and recovery gains. "Ore is the economic portion of a mineral deposit that can be extracted economically. Hence an ore type is a classification of the ore based on one or more dominant characteristics in order to enable communication between unit operations and/or technical disciplines.In project evaluation, ore types are often defined early based on geological observations by geologists and initial metallurgical testing is based around this classification even though a number of processing options can be under evaluation. However, the geological drivers of performance for each of these processes can be very different and the ore type classification for one process may not be relevant for another. In operations an ore type, as either defined in the project evaluation phase or those that evolve with additional knowledge, is unlikely to provide the knowledge required across all the unit operations. The ore type has a meaning to someone but does not necessarily for all unit operations across the value chain.Geometallurgical or orebody knowledge has evolved through the consideration of multiple processes within the value chain, the improved understanding of variability of process performance within ore types and the effect on the complexity of the mineral extraction processes. Furthermore orebody knowledge has been moving from personal based knowledge and understanding to a more process oriented approach where measurement and spatial and process performance modelling is playing a greater role. Advances in mine planning and scheduling allow for both detailed analysis of the block model and the expected extraction processing attributes across various time scales. This capability of analysing and describing the complexity still requires to be communicated to the various unit operations, which may be beyond the traditional classification of an ore type.The limitations of an ore type and potential alternatives to enable the relevant information to be communicated to the relevant groups are outlined through a number of case examples across the value chain.CITATION:Jackson, J and Young, M F, 2016. Although rock strength anisotropy is a well-known phenomenon in rock mechanics, its impact on geotechnical design is often ignored. No widely accepted guideline currently exists for its characterisation. Anisotropy can significantly control the failure mechanism and progression of damage into the rock mass, particularly in high-stress conditions. As such, it can play a key role in the stability of underground excavations and subsequent geotechnical design.This paper introduces the concept of anisotropy at both intact and rock mass scales. It then presents guidelines for measuring anisotropy and assigning rock mass strength properties. An improved unified constitutive model (IUCM), which can account for more complex failure mechanisms, is then briefly described. This IUCM is used to better understand the typical responses of anisotropic rocks to underground mining and to develop an improved damage classification scheme for these conditions.The application of conventional design methods in anisotropic conditions is shown to lead to significant errors. Downhole Assay tools are a geophysical method to collect an instigated response from the material surrounding a drill hole and deliver a multielement proxy-assay. They were first tested in the Pilbara at the turn of this century, however since 2011 they have seen a more focused testing and implementation regime with multiple companies across multiple Pilbara mine sites. The increase in the volume of data has led to advances in the measurements and significant improvements to the efficiency of the calibration process. Pulsed Fast and Thermal Neutron Activation Analysis (PFTNA) downhole assay tools collect gamma photon spectra which are characteristic of elemental signatures. One of the key components of the technique is calibrating the spectral signatures to lab assays. Each tool is slightly different due to the organic nature of the crystal detector and therefore responds slightly differently. Environment and hole conditions as well as ore characteristics are among other external influencing factors. Thus, a unique calibration is required for each tool. In addition, not all elements are measured directly, but some are actually characterised by proxy, meaning that if the signal-to-noise ratio for an element is small, it may be easier to identify the mineral or geology in which that element is found and thus infer the concentration of the element. These proxies may differ for each site or geology type within a site. There is a large advantage to build a unique calibration per tool at each site rather than a universal one to be used across the whole province. This then delivers the accuracy and precision of measurements that mining companies require for modern operations. Early work with the tool required several thousand metres of calibration data and several weeks of analysis to build each calibration. This process has now been streamlined to significantly reduce the amount of data required and the analysis time to make it much easier to introduce new tools to a site with an existing model or to create new models. This paper details the calibration process, illustrating the increasing accuracy of the models as training data are acquired as well as the methods for transferring a calibration from one tool to another.
