INTRODUCTION The phenomenon of heat-weakening of rock with 10.6 micron radiation from a continuous-wave C02 gas laser has been investigated in detail at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for over 5 years. The programs at MIT have explored the basic nature of the heat-weakening phenomena and rock fracture caused by heating (e.g., Refs. 1 and 2), and have resulted in quantitative estimates of the relationship between the amount and parer level of heating and the resulting decrease in the modulus of rupture of a rock beam in a three-point bend test (Ref. 3). Results of the tests reported in Ref. 3 indicate a greater than 90% reduction in the modulus of rupture for granite beams heat-weakened by a laser. These results prompted the U. S. Department of Transportation to seek an assessment of the expected feasibility of employing the heat- weakening concept in a full-scale tunnel boring operation. Present- day continuous rock-tunneling machines have demonstrated tunneling time and cost savings over drill-and-blast methods, when used in rock types that are easily broken by the cutters. No one mill attribute it to the partiality of friendship if I claim for Thomas Sterry Hunt the right to a place among that little band of men whom nature has endowed with what seems an almost magical power of insight into her mysteries. But those of us who knew him well, while me never ceased to wonder at the breadth of his genius, the fertility of his imagination, and the wonderful capacity of his memory, learned that these native powers would have availed little to win him his rank in science, had they not been stimulated by ceaseless mental activity, indomitable perseverance, and unflagging industry. Thomas Sterry Hunt was born in Norwich, Connecticut, on September 5, 1826. He came on his mother's side from that good old stock which gave to Puritan England the gentle mystic Peter Sterry and that uncompromising preacher Thomas Sterry, who wrote the notable tract, " The Rot among the Bishops " in 1667, and that gave to New England Consider and John Sterry, the mathematicians. While lie was a child the family moved to Poughkeepsie on the Hudson. There the father died when Thomas, the oldest son, was twelve. The mother and her family of six young children returned to the old home in Connecticut. For a short time Thomas attended the public school; but it was for a short time only, as he, thus early, was required to share the burden of the family support and to seek employment. WHEN ore was discovered on the Tintic Standard property in the spring of 1916, new developments were immediately started both north and south of that property, on the supposition that in East Tintic the ore would be found to occur in northerly trending channels, similar to those so characteristic of the older camp. But 9 years of developments have failed to establish the existence of such a channel. This is due undoubtedly to important differences in the geology of the two camps, that were not recognized, and is indicative of the danger in the general tendency toward interpreting the geology of East Tintic too strictly in terms of that of the older camp. It should not be forgotten that while the two sections have had practically the same geological history, the net results of a long series of geologic processes have developed in them conditions that differ so widely and in so many particulars that the necessity of regarding them as essentially different districts seems apparent. In an effort to emphasize this fact, this paper is devoted chiefly to a comparison of the geological conditions as found in the two camps and is addressed more particularly to those familiar with the geology of the Tintic district. Following a short description of the several ore discoveries and of the Tintic Standard mine is a brief discussion of the evidence of ore channels in East Tintic. ComMercial steel sheet is prepared by a combination of hot and cold rolling and annealing. This treatment usually results in more or less pronounced anisotropy. The anisotropy may manifest itself both as preferred orientation and in the manner in which impurities, segregations, and the like, are aligned in the sheet. The type of preferred orientation and the organization of impurities or segregations may affect the elastic moduli, the yield strength, the tensile strength, and almost always the amount of ductility in different directions. In any case, the most important directions concerned in the anisotropy are along the rolling direction, along the width direction, and along the thickness direction. Considerable data exist on the anisot-ropy of sheet steel as demonstrated by conventional tensile tests; however, few attempts have been made to measure the constants of plastic anisotropy and use them to describe the flow of anisotropic sheet under combined stresses. In this paper, evidence is presented indicating that plastic flow in anisotropic sheet can be described by the shear-strain energy flow theory provided that the anisotropy is properly taken into account. Materials Used in the Investigation Table I lists the sheet materials used in this investigation and describes the condition in which materials were tested. Direction, of Tests and Test Methods Two types of tests were run—tensile tests and hydraulic-bulge tests. Characteristic parameters of anisotropy were determined from the tension tests by methods which will be described later. Dimitri Konstantinovitch Tschernoff, was horn in Petrograd, Russia, on Nov. 1, 1839, and died in Yalta (Crimea) in the south of Russia, on Jan. 2, 1921. He obtained his early education in the Russian Gymnasium, corresponding to the American high school, and in the Technologic Institute. On graduation from this Institute in 1858, he was engaged as a professor of geometry and algebra and later became a librarian and superintendent of the museum in the same Institute. He also attended lectures in the mathematical physics section at the Univrrsity of Petrograd from 1859 to 1862. In 1866, Professor Tschernoff left the Technologic Institute and entered the employ of the Obouchoff steel plant, founded in 1863 for the manufacture of guns. Here he did his most important work on the heat treatment of steel, its crystallization and metallography. In 1880, he left the Obouchoff plant and went to the south of European Russia, where he discovered and developed some rock-salt mines. This enterprise brought him a rather large fortune. In 1884, he returned to Petrograd and during the next four years held several prominent positions in government departments. In 1899, he became professor of metallurgy in the Michael Artillery Academy, and retained that position until the time of the Russian Revolution. In 1902, Professor Tschernoff was elected an honorary member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. In September, 1917, Professor Tschernoff was sponding his vacation, as usual, in the city of Yalta (Crimea) in the south of Russia, with his wife and one of his daughters. The revolution progressed so rapidly that they were unable to return to Petrograd, and were compelled to stay in Yalta without provision for the winter season. Suffering from hunger. and lack of sufficient clothing, and deprived of his books, Tschernoff nevertheless continued his studies and gave a number of lectures on steel at the Polytechnic Institute. At the same time he worked hard on some. mathematical problems. His health broke down through long-continued under-nourishment. His works in the metallurgical field are well known to the students of metallurgy; good abstracts of his most important papers were published in Revue de Metallurgie (1915, pp. 829-882) in commemoration of his 75th birthday.

Since the exposition of the behavior of certain iron alloys by Sykesl involving the existence of an austenite loop and the discovery of such a loop in the chrome-iron system by Bain,2 there has been much conjecture both on his part and on the part of metallurgists in general as to the exact shape and location of this loop. In previous work commercial steel has been used and the microscope has been employed to locate the critical points so that the position of the loop has been quite approximate. Numerous attempts have been made to measure the critical points of the carbon-free alloys but all of these for one reason or another have failed. A satisfactory method for studying these phenomena is presented here. MateRial The first difficulty in this study was to obtain pure chromium-iron alloys. This has been overcome by melting in a vacuum electrolytic iron and chromium analyzing 99.84 Cr, Fe and C. A pure magnesite crucible was used and the melt allowed to solidify in the crucible. A typical analysis is chromium, 10.10 per cent., carbon, 0.006 per cent., silicon and manganese nil. To overcome the problem presented by segregation, ingots were made into wire 0.04 in. in diameter. This was accomplished by hand-forging the ingots into rods, using an oxyhydrogen flame for heating, in order to avoid carbon. Subsequently the rods were swaged to wire, the heating being carried out in hydrogen. Thus local segregation was eliminated although differences in analysis between portions 50 ft. apart were noted. An electric-resistance method was first tried to determine the critical points, but due to the physical defects in the wire this failed. Bain had previously shown the presence or absence of critical points in a qualitative way by observing the sag in a catenary. The author has devised the following method which gives an accurate determination of the critical points from expansion-temperature curves of suspended wire, a special telescopic dilatometer being used for the purpose.

Knowledge of the basic properties of rocks-strength, structure, and permeability-is prerequisite for the success of foundation work for masonry dams, large bridge piers, and tunneling as well as for excavation in rock and special underground construction. Strength of engineering materials depends upon texture and structure as well as the environmental conditions to which they have been subjected. Failure in its widest sense implies the transition of a material from elastic to plastic state (yield strength), from continuous to discontinuous state (rupture strength). The compressive strength of a material such as rock is the stress at which a sample, loaded and unconfined at the sides, fails by rupture. Some of the external factors that control strength of rocks are the nature and type of stress, whether uniaxial or triaxial, compression, tension, or torsion. Another important factor is the rate of stressing-whether constant, impact, or gradually increasing. Of the internal factors, the effect of texture upon strength is obvious. Generally, fine-grained rocks have higher compressive strength than coarse-grained prototypes. Among metamorphic and igneous rocks those with better and higher degree of interlocking of their crystals are generally stronger than the ones with poor or lower degree of interlocking. In sedimentary rocks, the degree and type of cementation has a great influence upon their strength. Structurally, the existence of fissures, cracks, and seams of argillaceous or organic materials in a rock specimen will greatly reduce its strength. The present war in Europe seems to have stimulated the demand for quicksilver. In July last, the price ranged around $35 per flask of 75 Ib., while to-day it seems to fluctuate between $47.50 and $50. The use of quicksilver in the form of fulminate, containing 70 per cent., and as corrosive sublimate, containing 73.8 per cent., must be extensive and a further market advance may be expected. With such an advance, some revival in quicksilver mining may be looked for, particularly in California, where many abandoned properties exist. What can be done with low-grade quicksilver ores under favorable conditions, particularly with low mining cost, may be seen from the following description of the Oceanic mine, near San Luis Obispo, Cal. Its operations date back to 1876, when rich sand ores were discovered. In three years 7,400 flasks of quicksilver were produced, but since then the deposit has been worked only sporadically . Until two years ago various attempts had been made by the Oceanic Quicksilver Co. to mine the more refractory "mud rock," which was encountered lying beyond the " sand rock." Mud and sand rock in varying quantities were treated together, with poor results, but operations were successful with sand rock of fair percentage. About two years ago, when all the sand rock had been exhausted, Murray Innes purchased the Oceanic mine. He found large quantities of low-grade mud rock, varying from 6 to 8 Ib. of quicksilver per ton, which at the prevailing low price of quicksilver demanded very cheap mining costs, in conjunction with high but cheap metallurgical extraction. At that time the extraction of quicksilver from mud rock ranged between 40 and 50 per cent., as far as I am able to learn. During the past few years, the Mineral Point Zinc Co. has had under consideration the improvement of various types of gas-filtering apparatus used in the removal of dust from crushing and milling plants, in the manufacture of oxide, and on blast-furnace fume and sintering furnaces. The original equipment of the various plants of the company was, of course, along lines of the standard stationary bag house. These houses required large surfaces, hand shaking, and varied only in the manner of the collection of solids and in the distribution of the gas. , Early in 1908, the first trial of a mechanical bag house was made at Nassau Plant at Depue, Ill. The duty of this installation was on dust-laden gas from a fine-crushing mill. The Printz and Rau bag machine was finally adopted and put into operation. This ingenious machine embodied what were then to us two novel features in bag-house practice: 1. An intermittent crinkling and snapping of the filtering fabric to free the meshes of solids. 2. A reversal of gas flow for a short period by a temporary connection with the suction trunk. This equipment worked fairly well except in cold weather, when we ran into condensation troubles. Had we at that time understood more fully some of the limitations of fabric filtering work, these might well have been remedied. We were impressed by this experience, however, with the efficiency of sudden tension on the fabric under suction. After a study had been made of some of the western blast-furnace houses using the reversal-of-flow feature, experiments were started early in 3 914 with a view to developing an automatic equipment along the best lines of our past experience. The objects sought were: 1. Keeping labor out of the houses for hygienic reasons. 2. Reduction of labor costs. 3. Reduction in size of bag houses. 4. Accessibility. 5. Ability to handle relatively hot gases where required.

The subject of this paper is one to which there are many references in the literature but on which few actual data have been published. Such data are here presented showing the absorption of sulfur from producer gas in two open-hearth heats. This absorption occurs during the melting-down stage. Results of analyses of slag and metal samples taken simultaneously from the bath are given. THE subject of this paper is one to which there are many references in the literature on the manufacture of steel in the open-hearth furnace, but few actual experimental data have been published. For that reason, the presentation of results obtained from two open-hearth heats where attempts were made to measure the sulfur absorption will be of considerable interest and value. The two heats on which the experiments were made were Armco ingot-iron heats and differ from the usual open-hearth heat of medium- or mild-carbon steel in that the refining is carried further; in this product the carbon and manganese are reduced practically to traces. Inmost other respects, and especially in respect to the absorption of sulfur from the producer gas, the two heats are typical of usual open-hearth practice. The object of the experiments made on the first Armco iron heat was to determine the fluctuation of the composition of the metal bath and the slag throughout the course of the heat, with especial reference to the variations in sulfur. It was hoped to, determine whether there was an increase in sulfur in the bath from the producer gas and if so at what stage in the process the increase occurred. The experimental method consisted of charging analyzed scrap and pig iron, so that the sulfur in the charge could be calculated. Then, throughout the duration of the heat, metal and slag samples were taken every half hour, beginning as soon as there was enough molten metal to take a sample. In a gold standard world which possesses insufficient metal to meet the every-day needs of all, confidence becomes the vital factor, the very foundation upon which the machinery for the expansion of gold into currency, and credit, rests. The gold supply, affected by many influences, moves constantly from one point to another, but not always to that point where it is most needed. In the period 1928-1930, the combined gold holdings of the United States and France increased $1,370,936,-000, and this with new gold adding only $600,000,000 to the monetary gold stock.Theref ore, the gold stocks of other countries must have been depleted during the period by $770,936,000. This uncontrolled shifting throws the delicately adjusted instrumentalities of both credit and commerce out of equilibrium. If a given nation's gold stock shifts so as to bring it substantially below the legal reserve ratio set up against it for currency issues, the effect can easily extend to the currency issues and banking credit volume of one or more nations which may have based their gold exchange standards upon the gold stock of such nation. Thus the substitution of paper based on gold in place of the actual gold is an inflation of the currency, which carries through into an uncontrolled pyramiding upon the entire machinery of credit based on gold. In 1929 Europe, South America, Africa and Asia had overissued currency based on gold. America, Oceanica and Japan, which have not overissued their gold currencies, would in normal times require their entire present gold stocks and, as Continental Asia is largely upon a silver credit basis, from a domestic standpoint, it would appear that the gold problem is not so much one of maldistribution, as it is one of inadequate supply. It is the purpose of this paper to attempt to establish three theses which may be stated in advance as follows: 1. The crude oil potential is the accumulation of surplus initial production. 2. The crude oil potential is a semi-inventory and therefore is a causal factor in the price of crude petroleum. 3. The price of crude petroleum no longer correlates with above-ground inventories but does correlate with corrected inventories (i. e., above-ground storage plus the inventory equivalent of the crude oil potential). The factors and principles set forth in this study are thought to yield an approximate answer to a number of questions of active interest in the petroleum industry today, to wit: (a) How long would be required to eliminate the potential if all drilling ceased? (b) What would be the indicated crude oil production of the United States in 1931 if proration were abandoned? (c) What economic change would be necessary to warrant a higher price for crude oil? Definitions For the purposes of this study the following definitions may be stated: The crude oil potential in the United States is the quantity of oil that all the oil wells would make the first 24 hr. if permitted to flow unrestricted. The surplus potential is the above-mentioned quantity minus the volume currently produced. Initial production is the first day's unrestricted flow of an oil well. Aggregate initial production is the sum of the initials of all wells completed during a year. Surplus initial is the initial not needed to bring production into balance with demand. The surplus initial is equal to the crude oil potential minus the current rate of production. The annual production-equivalent of the crude oil potential is the volume of oil that would be produced in one year if all wells were permitted

The oil-producing districts of Kansas comprise the northern portion of the so-called Mid-Continent field. As shown in the accompanying map, these districts are located chiefly in the southeastern and south central parts of the state. A considerable area in southeastern Kansas, extending northward nearly to Kansas City, has long been known as oil territory, the productive wells being distributed in patches or spots of irregular size and shape, the location of which is controlled by conditions of rock structure, and by the texture and porosity of the "sands" beneath the surface. In south central Kansas, there are a number of producing fields, the location of which appears to be controlled chiefly by well-defined structure. The most important districts are those in Butler County, especially that in the vicinity of El Dorado, which was for a time the most productive district in the entire Mid-Continent field. Recently new production of importance has been brought in the vicinity of Peabody and present development is active to the north across Marion County. Tests in the western parts of Kansas have not been successful in finding new petroleum fields. Histoby The first well drilled for petroleum, in Kansas, was near the town of Paola, Miami Co., about 40 mi. southwest of Kansas City, in the summer of 1860, only a few months after the completion of the famous "Colonel" Drake discovery well in Pennsylvania. Kansas appears to be the second state to engage in a serious attempt to find oil by drilling. The Civil War caused the temporary abandonment of attempts at oil development in the state. It was in the vicinity of Paola, where numerous oil seepages had been observed, that the first well producing oil in commercial quantities was drilled,' where also gas was first piped to the city for commercial use. This review covers the northern 32 counties of the Texas Panhandle, an area 180 miles square. The westerly three-fourths of the district lies wholly within that great area known as the Llano Estacado or "staked plains." Six of the counties produce oil and gas and three produce gas alone. All of the production is associated with the Amarillo arch, a huge anticline superimposed upon a buried mountain range which is undoubtedly a continuation of the Wichitas of southwestern Oklahoma. Oil Production The production of the Texas Panhandle up to Jan. 1,1930, was slightly over 157 million barrels, 90 per cent. of which came from Hutchinson and Gray counties. About 33,000,000 bbl. was produced during 1930. Though this was about 9 per cent. above the 1929 production, it was over 8,000,000 bbl. less than was produced during the peak year, 1928. The present daily production is slightly over 40,000 bbl., which is the allowable production under state-wide proration. The assumed potential for the purpose of proration is 124,500 bbl. and the actual capacity of the wells probably would be in the neighborhood of 100,000 barrels. The total initial production of the oil wells completed in 1930 was 157,289 bbl. from 308 wells, or 511 bbl. per well, as compared to a 734-bbl. average from the 350 oil wells drilled during the preceding year. The completions in Gray County numbered 232, with an average initial of 614 barrels. Completions During 1930, 526 wells were completed in the Panhandle as compared to a total of 503 during 1929. Of the year's completions, 308 were oil wells, 169 produced gas and 49 were dry holes. Of the 3027 wells drilled in the Panhandle to date, 2780 have produced oil, gas or both, making the ratio of dry holes to producers about 1:11.3. Ignoring the 63 dry holes drilled in nonproductive counties, the ratio becomes 184:2780 or 1:15.1 which is slightly less favorable than that which obtained at the end of 1929.

GEORGIA, since 1829, has produced nearly $18,000,000 from her gold mines, but in late years the output has dwindled to insignificance. In view of present universal efforts to increase gold production, it seems pertinent to record some recent observations in that field, briefly review its past and weigh probabilities of reviving gold mining there. Little in this paper can be claimed as new or original, and it does not present results of a detailed or profound investigation of the whole region. The Allatoona gold mine was reopened in January, 1932, and explored at greater depth during the period from January to June of that year. A number of other abandoned mines were visited, but since the workings, in common with most such mines in Georgia, were flooded or caved, underground conditions could not be examined. For a wider knowl-edge of the subject, a search was made through available pertinent literature and statistics, a bibliography of which is appended hereto. To all the sources obligations are gratefully acknowledged.

In recent years an important function of the mining engineer has been the appraisal of the value of mining-properties required by those planning consolidations of a number of' individual operations. In no field of productive industry have the economic results attainable by consolidation been more clearly shown than in the mining-regions of the United States. In many important mining-centers unification of ownership of the most valuable properties has already partially or completely been attained, and, in other districts, projected absorptions and consolidations await only favorable financial conditions for their consummation. The iron-ore districts of the Lake Superior region, the coal-mines of Colorado, of Wyoming and of Utah, the anthracite mines of Pennsylvania, the Connellsville coking-coal mines, and large areas of bituminous coal-land in Pennsylvania, in Ohio, in the Indian Territory and in other portions of the United States, are now largely controlled by a few corporations operating on a large scale, or by a number of corporations working in harmony because of an affiliation and interleaving of interests. The tact of keen financiers and the diplomacy of men of great administrative ability are the chief operative forces in conceiving and accomplishing such consolidations, but in formulating and maturing them, the services of the mining engineer are often required to supply the facts upon which they must be based. For this purpose the expert is expected to furnish full and complete reports covering the quantity of ore, coal or other mineral available, its value per ton, cost of mining and treatment, etc. In reporting upon gold-, silver-, lead-, zinc-, copper- or iron-

The old do not love to see the young pass away from the light of the sun before them. Fathers would fain keep their sons by their side to the. end of life ; but the old Greeks, who loved the old gods, were wont to moderate their grief with the sweet superstition that only those whom their gods especially loved died early. The Christian church found consolation in that superstition applied in a new form to its new sorrows, and paid its most enthusiastic devotion to the memories of its young and beautiful martyrs. The natural science of our century is robbing us fast of this and all other superstitions, sweet as well as bitter, and leaving us for consolation to the teaching—colder, yet kinder—of personal fortitude and that optimism Which intelligently translates the Cosmos of Humboldt back into its old name of the Harmonia of Pythagoras. The Homeric Kataclothes, the three fates, are dead and gone for us, with that old world which comprehended none of the laws of cause and effect, and sorrowed for those who were cut off from the land of the living without hope of more than a shadowy existence beyond the river of death. All the more the ancients cherished the memory of their dead and lavished their choicest art upon their monuments. We moderns have lost the monumental arts, but we better keep the monuments which our dead leave behind them. No one of us who has done good work can fail to be remembered; and in an Institute like this, which keeps the press at work, an immortality in the memory of men is more possible, more certain, for every one of its members than the greatest heroes of antiquity could anticipate for themselves. In old apocalyptic times the works of men followed them through death to the throne of God to be their advocates in judgment, but in these modern times our works remain this side the grave, to follow the name of the departed one as it takes its course along the history of his peculiar art or science advancing slowly to perfection. NEARLY everyone who has not had the benefit of study in the field of metallurgy subscribes to a persistent and enthusiastic belief in the legendary lost art of hardening copper. This of course supplies a perfect introduction to a chapter of information on copper and its alloys, since the dissipation of fallacies and superstitions affecting an art probably constitutes the best method of getting at its real substance. Metals are hardened, but also embrittled, by a plurality of impurities. In the modern technology of copper-base metal products, we are familiar with a great host of materials, passing from one extreme of dead soft copper better than 99.9 pct pure, which in the form of wire about as thick as a match will stand hundreds of full twists in a 12-in. length, to an alloy containing less than 3 pct of alloyed substance possessing the strength of pretty good steel and capable of manufacture into razor blades, should we suddenly be deprived of steel; certainly a much better material for this purpose. The desirable high strength and hardness of the heat-treated strong aluminum alloys result from two distinct structural changes: (1) the formation of a solid, solution by heating at the required temperature for a sufficient period, and the substantial retention of this solid solution by rapidly quenching; (2) precipitation of particles of constituent and coalescence to a critical size to produce maximum strength and hardness. In alloys of the duralumin type, that is, alloys containing both copper and magnesium silicide precipitation takes place at normal atmospheric temperature, whereas in alloys containing copper without magnesium silicide or magnesium silicide without copper, maximum properties are obtained only after an accelerated aging treatment consisting of heating for 15 to 20 hr. at temperatures of about 150" C. The mechanical properties of these alloys subsequent to quenching but prior to aging are ideal for forming operations. Unfortunately, however, the alloys of the duralumin type age very rapidly during the first 24 hr. and aging is substantially complete after four days. For severe forming, such as the heading of rivets, it is desirable that this be accomplished within ½ hr. or at the most 2 hr. after quenching. Alloys containing magnesium silicide without copper also age at normal temperatures but the aging is less rapid and the material can be satisfactorily worked within several weeks after quenching. Some slight aging of alloys containing copper alone also takes place at room temperature but it is unimportant from the standpoint of workability. Any method of retarding the aging at room temperature of the duralumin type of alloys would be of considerable advantage in that the period during which the material could be worked successfully would be lengthened. For instance, in aircraft plants it is customary to supply the workmen with small lots of rivets that should be used within ½ hr . after heat treatment. Such procedure has the obvious disadvantage of being uneconomical, and furthermore there is always the possibility that the workmen would use the rivets after the time limit had expired, or the supply being depleted might use some that had not been heat-

TO those engaged in the purchase and sale of gold- and silverores, mattes and bullion, the frequent differences in the gold- and silver-contents, as reported by different assayers, is a source of much annoyance and expense. The desirability of uniform methods of assay has long been recognized by certain refiners who specify in their bullion-contracts the method to be adopted in assaying the bullion. One large producer of base bullion employs at each refining-works with whom it has a bullion contract an assayer whose duty it is to see that the bullion is sampled and assayed according to contract-specifications. For the assay of gold- and silver-bullion, standard methods are now generally adopted; the reeult being that differences seldom occur. While we cannot hope for anything near perfection from fireassay methods for ores, mattes and base bullion, as carried out cornmercially, such methods may be made to yield results which answer all commercial requirements, and they will probably be retained for obvious reasons. The object of the present paper is to point out some of the sources of error and to show the importance of more uniform methods of assay and close attention to the details of the work. The sources of error in the assay of ores and mattes are: improper sampling; losses of the precious metals during fusion, scorification and cupellation; imperfect elimination of the base metals on the cupel and imperfect extraction of the silver during the parting in nitric acid. It is not the object of the present paper to enter upon the subject of sampling; but a few remarks may be of value. There has been considerable discussion recently in Colorado upon the frequent differences which occur in the assays of Cripple Creek gold-ores, and these differences have been attributed to various causes.
