Three new transfer functions relating the time response of the amount of floatable mineral in the under flow to time-dependent changes in the amount of floatable mineral in the feed to the cell are presented. Using experimental stimulus-response data obtained from the flotation of -200+325-mesh glass spheres in a rotor-stator-type cell, the new transfer functions are compared to the only transfer function to be presently found in the literature by nonlinear least-squares fitting in the frequency domain. The new mathematical model based on the amount of available bubble surface area and its rate of introduction is quite promising. The transfer function which allows for a distributed first-order flotation rate constant also gives good results. Simultaneous sodium chloride tracer and glass bead stimulus-response tests show that the mixing conditions in the cell were nearly ideal. It is felt that the new transfer functions presented offer excellent alternatives for use in the design of automatic process control equipment for the continuous mechanical froth flotation cell.

In the first big blast at Climax, a "loop back" (three-wire system) was used (Fig, I), with the idea of securing a wiring system that would give to all series the same amount of current. Single-phase, 60-cycle, 13,800-volt power was furnished to the blasting transformers, each of which has a rated capacity of 600 amp. at 480 volts. Two blasting leads were taken from these transformers, giving a blasting current of single phase, 60 cycle, 480 volts, with an instantaneous capacity of more than 600 amp. The blasting switch was on the secondary leads from the transformers, to avoid lag in energizing them.

This chapter covers certain aspects of open pit production planning based on experience, pointing out approaches to planning that may help produce a realistic picture for evaluation and operation The subjects discussed are roads, preproduction stripping, dump planning, dewatering, the relationship of production planning to equipment selection, and computer methods for the short-range or operational pit planning process Actual determination of ore limits, pit design, and production schedules are covered in other chapters This discussion is somewhat general. Specific problems that occur in mine planning are extremely varied, and it is not possible to cover many of them in a chapter, therefore, only some of the principles that are important in the approach to open pit production planning problems will be discussed.

During the past decade the genesis of the lead- and zincdeposits of the Mississippi valley has received special attention from many distinguished observers. But their united egorts, instead of settling all disputed questions, have, in many respects, involl-ed the general problem in greater uncertainty than would be thought possible under the circumstances. In place of the harmony of opinion that might be expected, there is unexpected disagreement, largely due to the fact that, instead of giving attention to a possible multiplicity of ore-producing conditions among the different deposits, the attempt has been made to bring all deposits under a single genetic head. To a new observer of the lead- and zinc-deposits of the Mississippi valley, it appears at the outset that all the deposits cannot possibly have had the same genesis. In fact, different modes of origin have been often asserted for the ore-bodies, but the difficulty has been that each writer has referred them either all to one category or all to another, and no intermediate ground has been considered possible. Such a position now appears to be clearly untenable. The opinion that, in the deposits of the region under consideration, the ore-materials represent original depositions, made at the time the rocks themselves were formed, is no longer held by any authority, and therefore need not be considered here. Hydrogeological techniques were used to solve problems of slope stability in open-pit mines of the Eufaula bauxite district, Ala. Geologic and hydrologic data were evaluated and used to design a system of dewatering wells to enable the operators to mine bauxite more efficiently and economically. Walls of open-pit mines in the district were subsequently stabilized by the operation of the dewatering system. Three open- pit mines, each at varying stages of the mining process, of the A.P. Green Refractories Co., were used to develop a sequential series of guidelines that indicate how to effectively remove ground water from the formations surrounding the ore bodies in the district. The use of sound engineering principles in well design, in combination with the correct interpretation of the pit hydrology provided the basis for solutions of the slope-stabilization problem and aided in the economical removal of bauxite from mines of the district.

The problems and limitations encountered in the Physical beneficiation of the Appalachian Red Iron Ores are discussed. Two major problems are identified - the high phosphorus content and the fine dissemination or encapsulation of mineral impurities in the iron-bearing minerals. A process that combined extreme fine grinding techniques with magnetizing roasting or flotation-separation methods is suggested. By these methods, concentrates assaying 60-61 % Fe, exceeding the widely accepted upper limit of 56% Fe set for these ores, were produced with 75-90% iron recovery. Moreover, it was shown that the phosphorus content of these concentrates could be reduced from 0.25% to 0.03% phosphorus by acid leaching. A brief discussion on production costs based on current and future developments in iron ore processing is given.

The White Pine mine site lies five miles south of Lake Superior in Ontonagon County, Mich. Copper sulfide, mixed with some native copper, is mined by a room-and-pillar system from gently dipping Upper Kewee-nawan sediments. Depth of mining now varies from 700 to 1800 ft and the ore body continues to a depth of at least 3400 ft. An area roughly 21/2 miles square has already been mined. Mining height has varied from 61/2 to 22 ft. A rock mechanics program was set up in late 1963 to promote safety and mining efficiency. This note reports some of the findings. Rock Strength Compressive strength of small, dry specimens of sandstones, siltstones, and shales from the ore zone varies from 20,000 to 30,000 psi. This is intermediate between the softer coal mine sediments and the meta-morphic and igneous rocks of hard rock mines. Annual Cycle of Rock Failure Since 1963, every roof and pillar failure involving more than a few tons of rock has been examined and documented. A linear programming model has been developed to solve a production planning problem for a multi-plant stone operation serving several customers. The factors considered are production capacities, inventory restrictions, demand requirements, and available stone reserves. The objective function to be optimized is the total annual net returns from the quarry operations. For the purposes of model testing, annual stone sales from each plant were divided monthwise, productwise, and assigned to a market. The concept of assigning demands to market sectors and not to any particular plant creates the self-correcting interplay between the plants and the markets. Along with the inventory restrictions, and ending inventory requirements, this interaction enables the model to minimize the external diseconomics. The model was tested against an operating prototype and a number of alternative problems were also considered. Finally, the basic linear programming model has been enlarged by the addition of another dimension and the problem has been derived in a decomposition format.

Three, major suites of igneous rocks were erupted in the Great Basin in middle and late Cenozoic time. The first resulted in eruption of andesitic rocks in the northern Great Basin between 42 and 34 m.y. ago. Between 34 and 17 m.y. ago this igneous activity migrated to the southwest, ending about 17 m.y. ago with the onset of crustal extension and north-south- trending Basin and Range (rift) faulting. The second volcanic suite erupted between 17 and 8 m.y. ago in the northern Great Basin. The third volcanic suite consists of andesitic and rhyolitic lavas and some basalt erupted between 22 to 7 m.y. ago in the western Great Basin along the northwest transcurrent Walker Lane fault zone. Hydrothermal ore deposits are associated with all suites of igneous rocks.

A detailed breakdown of mining costs, available to management on monthly and year-to-date bases, is mandatory for a controlled and efficient mining operation. A simple lump sum reporting of costs may indicate a profit or loss differential, but it does not allow an effective search for areas of possible cost reduction. Moreover, functional reporting is necessary on a timely basis so as to note trends of increasing costs In specific areas, which in turn allow possible preventive action by management. Definitive cost information helps to eliminate the tendency to overlook areas where cost Improvements can be made. A good cost control system points out salient operational weaknesses by: ( 1 ) allowing comparison of functional costs with similar costs of other mines and (2) pinpointing sudden increases over unit empirical costs within the organization. In general, the cost accounting structure is relatively uniform within large open pit mines, but surprisingly some systems will overlook the need for detailed breakout in comparatively high cost areas. In some other systems, unrelated costs will be lumped together, preventing careful analysis of cost accrual.

Cyprus Pima Mining Co.'s open pit operation was started in 1957 with the normal assumption that the ore reserve estimate was accurate within an acceptable range of values. Over the years, a number of attempts have been made to refine and polish the ore reserve figures using a variety of established standard procedures. None of these attempts have produced results which are totally satisfactory, particularly when comparisons are made between ore reserve estimates and short to medium range production figures. Statistical studies of operations data revealed relationships which could be used to subdivide ore blocks in much the same way as they are actually mined. Comparisons between these newly developed ore blocks and production data show that the new method of evaluation yields excellent results.

AS methods for measuring fiber textures become more exact, it becomes justifiable to scrutinize an observed pole-density curve for evidence of minor texture components. These are disclosed by minor maxima or abnormally broad major maxima. One possible source of these minor components is twinning of the main component. In cubic metals and alloys, there are two kinds of twins: 1) Annealing twins in face-centered cubic metals. These are reflection twins on {Ill), and they can be expected to be present in recrystallization textures. 2) Deformation twins in body-centered cubic metals. These are shear twins on (112). Although usually formed only by impact, they might conceivably be present in the deformation texture of severely cold-drawn wire. Fortunately, both kinds of twinning lead to the same orientation relationships. It thus becomes possible to prepare a single list of angles between various planes in parent crystal and twin, which is helpful in examining pole-density curves for evidence of twinning in any cubic metal or alloy. Such a list of interplanar angles is given in Table I. This table consists of three parts, corresponding to the three major texture components—<100>, <110>, and <111>-most commonly found in the fiber textures of cubic metals. THE ores now milled at the Midvale concentrator of the United States Smelting, Refining & Mining Co. come mostly from ;the company&apos;s mine in the Bingham district, about 18 miles west of Midvale. Custom ores from this same district and from other western mining districts are also milled at times. The Bingham ores consist of galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite in a gangue of quartz, quartzite, limestone, and porphyry. The percentage of chalcopyrite is small, usually about 0.5 per cent., while the galena, pyrite, and sphalerite combined constitute about 60 per cent. of the total ore. These three minerals vary considerably&apos; in amount and, at times, all three are somewhat oxidized. The ores also contain gold and silver, the former being mostly in the pyrite while the latter is generally with the galena. The crystallization of the economic minerals varies from fairly coarse to extremely fine. The ores are carried to Midvale by the Bingham & Garfield and the Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroads or by the Denver h Rio Grande Western railroad, in 50-ton, steel, full dump cars. The milling problem is to recover the silver-bearing galena, the gold-bearing pyrite, and the chalcopyrite in a product suitable for the lead smelter and containing the least possible amount of gangue and sphalerite and then recover the sphalerite in a product suitable for a zinc smelter. The minerals are recovered partly by water concentration and partly by water concentration combined with electrostatic treatment.

The goal of this study is to evaluate the coal flotation process and the interaction of the chemical (reagent) and hydrodynamic (machine, operational) variables as they affect yield, flotation of various sized particles, and sulfur and ash rejection. Coal flotation is found to follow a first order process with the coal floating much faster than either pyrite or ash. This circumstance may be used to achieve gangue rejection during flotation. When floated with MZBC, cresol, or pine oil frothers, coal floats in the size sequence: 108 pm ( - 65 mesh), 589 x 808 pm (88 x 65 mesh), and 1.17 mm x: 589 pm (14 x 18 mesh). However with a substantial amount of fuel oil collector, all particles tend to float roughly in proportion to their content in the feed. An increasing aeration rate was found to be the most important variable in increasing the coal flotation rate. This increase in flotation rate, unfortunately, is also accompanied by an increase in the flotation rate of the pyrite. The rejection of pyrite during coal flotation is best accomplished at low aeration rates, low frother concentrations, and low impeller speeds.
