The development of a simple method to predict the autogenous grinding possibilities of new ore deposits is attained. This method employs a 45-cm (18-in.) dry grinding Aerofall mill to grind small quantities of core or crushed samples in the top size range of 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2 in.). An extensive program has been carried out to correlate the data obtained in the 45-cm (18- in.) test mill with the actual results obtained in large commercial plants or autogenous test plants. Enough evidence now exists from these correlation programs that the 45-cm (18-in.) mill can be used to grind small samples from a new deposit and correctly predict the autogenous grinding mill requirements of a commercial plant to treat this ore.

More than 1.81 mt (2 million tons) of low grade ore have been heap leached at the Alligator Ridge mine. Since inception of leaching in 1980, several modifications have been made to ore agglomeration, heap construction, and leach operation practice. These modifications have improved the percolation rate of the ore and the rate of gold extraction from the ore. Changes made in each of these areas are described and the effects of the changes are discussed.

In 1968 the metal-mining industry of northern Idaho installed tailings ponds as a means of handling and treating mine wastes, metallurgical process wastes and domestic wastes. The installation of the ponds constituted a crash program to minimize pollution of the Coeur d'Alene River. The ponds provided an opportunity to investigate which combinations of wastes tailings ponds can be treated. The research data pertaining to tailings pond discharge lends insight into compliance with the recent EPA guideline for effluent quality.

The selective dissolution of pyrolusite (MnO2) in presence of goethite (FeO•OH) in aqueous ammoniacal ammonium carbamate solution has been investigated: various reducing agents were studied, in particular sodium sulfite (Na2SO3,) and hydrazine hydrate (N2H4•H2O). Sodium sulfite was found to be an unsatisfactory reducing agent for both goethite and pyrolusite, for the leaching rate decreased steadily with time to an impractical level because of the limited solubility of the reactions products. Hydrazine hydrate was an effective reducing agent for pyrolusite even at low temperature, whereas goethite required much higher temperatures for any appreciable dissolution. A 1-hr leach at 35°C dissolved 90% of the pyrolusite but only 0.1% of the goethite. An activation energy of 17.0 Kcal per mole was found for the dissolution of pyrolusite with hydrazine. A reaction mechanism for the leaching of pyrolusite with hydrazine is proposed in which a reduction reaction on the surface of the mineral is the rate-determining step. The application of ammonium carbamate to the beneficiation of ilmenite is briefly described.

REPRESENTED here are the ideas and varied experiences of many people in the Hanna Coal Co. who have helped develop, over a number of years, an efficient and flexible method for spraying con- trolled amounts of oil on coal. Since the George- town preparation plant began operations early in 1951, oil treatment of coal has received special attention. It is believed that oil treating will satisfy present customers and also attract new markets. The first step in developing the new method of oil spraying was the construction of a dust cabinet for testing 50-lb samples of treated coal with the available oil sprays on the market. Tests results were tabulated for both indoor and outdoor storage.

IN a recently reported investigation, J. B. Clark and F. N. Rhines1 used a diffusion couple technique to determine the number of intermetallic phases which should be present in the Al-Mg equilibrium phase diagram. Their method was an application of the following generally accepted principle. If a diffusion couple made up of two metals is annealed at a given temperature for a long time, all the phases of the binary system which exist under equilibrium conditions at the diffusion temperature will form intermetallic layers. It is important that the diffusion temperature be high enough and the diffusion time be long enough to permit the nuclea-tion of all thermodynamically stable phases at the interface of the couples and their growth to observable thicknesses. These simple time-temperature criteria are at times difficult to satisfy, and it is the purpose of this note to point out a situation in which this is the case. Traditional uranium exploration techniques were utilized and comparatively evaluated in the Front Range, Colorado uranium province. Intense surficial leaching and thick colluvial cover render traditional airborne and ground radioactivity reconnaissance prospecting useless. Radon gas emanometry and sulfur gas emanometry were slightly more effective but the long and short term variations In soil gas emanation rates make it extremely difficult to gain useful information from these systems. The technique judged most useful was Track Etch radon prospecting. The excellent definition of the technique, as well as its repeatability, indicate that it is an ideal prospecting tool for narrow vein-type deposits similar to those of the Front Range, Colorado.
