A knowledge of the magnitude of the irreducible inter.;titial water in a porous medium is so important to petroleum engineering that its determination has become routine in core analyses. The method of determination, being a production problem, should encompass the basic requirements of simplicity in technique and calculations, with reproducible results obtainable in a short interval of time. The results of the evaluation tests outlined in this report indicate that the evaporation method for determining the irreducible water is a technique which meets the requirements. The procedure consists, as the name implies. of permitting the saturant in the pore spaces to evaporate until only an irreducible volume remains. The determination of this volume can be made either graphically or by a mathematical comparison of fluid flows; the time required for each determination being dependent on the fluid used. When fluids other than those having reservoir characteristics were used, a volume factor had to be calculated which was based on the relative volume of various liquids adsorbed on grain surfaces and retained in pores. This factor made possible the calculation of an irreducible water volume when more volatile fluids such as toluene and benzene were used as the saturants. Also presented is the theoretical discussion necessary for the calculation of the capillary pressure as determined from the evaporation curve. A comparison is made between the calculated values and those obtained by experimental means. INTRODUCTION In all geological formations there exists, in the pore spaces of the rock structure, water that is held in a state of equilibrium between capillary and hydrostatic forces. "Interstitial water" is the term given to this water and is defined as that water coexisting in the pore space with the oil prior to exploitation. The term ''connate water" has often been used synonymously with this term; however, this can be true only by a specific definition since, geologically, it means the water in place at the time the rock structure was formed. The quantity of the interstitial water is a variable factor in any formation, since it depends on the hydrostatic forces present in any multiple-phase system. These forces may become unbalanced by the introduction of an extraneous force such as the raising or lowering of the "water table" or the migration of oil into a water-filled formation. Any unbalanced force results in a change in the interstitial water. There exists, however, an irreducible interstitial water. for a particular sand, that is the fraction of the pore space occupied by water when the capillary pressure at the particular point in question is at an equilibrium with the hydrostatic head of the oil sand in the reservoir. For this discussion the term "irreducible water saturation" will be used in place of "irreducible interstitial water saturation" for the sake of brevity; however, they are understood to be identical. A great amount of work has been devoted to the theory and methods for studying the irreducible water saturation and its related capillary pressure. As a result of the publications of Leverett;' Hassler, Brunner and Deahl;2 Calhoun and Lewis;3 and others, the role of capillary pressure studies is being accepted by the industry as a tool for studying suhsurface phenomena. Many techniques have been developed and published for determining the capillary pressure and irreducible water. In general, these techniques may be grouped into three classifications. One of the first was the capillary pressure method described by Leverett1 and expanded by Bruce and Welge.4 The experimental results were compared with water saturation of cores obtained using oil-base mud. Thornton and Marshall compared the irreducible water saturation of core samples determined by the capillary pressure method and by salinity and reported good agreement between the two methods. The second classification for determining the irreducible water and capillary pressure may be referred to as the "centrifugal force method." The general technique is similar to the capillary pressure method except that the force driving the reservoir fluid from the sample is of a centrifugal nature. A complete description of this method was presented by J. J. . McCullough and F. W. Albaugh.6 A process, the reverse of the capillary pressure method, was presented by W. R. Purcell.7 Mercury under pressure is driven into the pores of the rock and the saturation of the core determined at each applied pressure. The resulting capillary pressure curve is used to evaluate the irreducible water saturation. The techniques mentioned are singular in their approach to the irreducible water saturation. In all cases. an external force was applied to the core. The forces employed in the evaporation method are the vapor pressure of the liquid causing evaporation, the kinetic diffusion forces. adsorptive forces and. to a lesser degree, the viscous forces resisting flow to the surface. The basic definition of irreducible water is that water held in a state of equilibrium between capillary and hydrostatic forces This water has been described by previous investigators as being held in the microcapillaries too small to support fluid flow. Actually, this fluid volume is made up of the water in the microcapillaries and as a film adhering to the surface of the crystals. All capillaries. therefore, possess some liquid as a film, the thickness of the film being dependent on the properties of the fluid and solid. A discussion of experiments with references pertaining to the measurement of this immobile layer next to the solid surface can be found in the text by J. J. Bikerman.8 Eversole and Lahr calculated the thickness of this layer to be in the order of 10 ' to 10' cm for aqueous solutions and glass. Between two quartz surfaces they found the thickness to be 2 x 10 cm. The work of Volkova, on the capillary movement of water and toluene in quartz grains, indicated the thickness of the Immobile layers to be near 10' cm. Since any measurement is an average value, it is easy to understand that an absolute value would depend on the roughness of the surfaces involved and the complexity of the system. A calculated effective pore radius of 2 x 10 cm is obtained at the, irreducible saturation of a porous media in a water-air system when a capillary pressure of 100 psi is applied. Since the separation of the sand grains is of the same approximate magnitude as the immobile layer.

In the systems Mo-Fe-C, Mo-Co-C, and Mo-Ni-C the phase boumdaries of the cubic Ij carbides were determined at 1000°C and the variation of the lattice parameter with composition was measured. In the system Mo-Fe-C a single ternary carbide, Mo3Fe3C, was observed. In Mo-Co-C and Mo-Ni-C two new n phases of the type M12C were found: Mo6C06C and Mo6Ni6C. At 1000°C they coexist with the M6C phases MO3-4,CO3-2C and Mo3-4Ni3-2C, respectively. Mo3C03C and Mo4C02C are not separate phases but parts of a single M6C phase region, and the same is true of Mo3Ni3C and Mo4Ni2C. THE n carbide structure type has been known since it was determined by westgren' in 1933, yet reliable information on phase compositions of this type is ap-parently scarce. The following selection of suggested formulas illustrates the extent of the confusion con-cerning compositions: W2-3Fe4-3C,1W6Fe6C,2 W2_4Fe4-2C,3 (W,Fe)6C,4 Tj.-W4Co2C and nz-W6Co6C,5 n1-W3Co3C and n2-w4Co2C,5 W3C03C and w6Co3C2,7 MO3Fe3C,8n2-M04Fe2C,9 (MO,Fe)6C,4 MO3CO3C,8 n2-MO4CO2C.9 Many of these compositions obviously overlap, some disagree in carbon content. The use of the designations 77, and n2 is not consistent. There is uncertainty whether two carbides M6C coexist or whether there is only one M6C with a wide range of substitution of one metal for the other. The existence of M12C seems questionable altogether if one ignores the results of a neutron diffraction study of W6Fe6C supporting that particular metal to carbon ratio.'' More reliable information is available for the iso-typic oxides studied by Nevitt,11 Nevitt, Downey, and orris," and Meussner and carpenter.l3 That n car-bides and oxides are structurally identical, particularly with respect to the location of the metalloid atom, has been demonstrated clearly by Stadelmaier and Meussner14 and also by Parthe, Jeitschko, and sadagopan.15 Therefore the present paper, which attempts to establish the phase boundaries of n defini-tively for three carbon systems, has implications for the whole family of filled Ti2Ni types. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The samples were prepared in two stages. Pellets weighing 3 g were compacted from powders of the elements and presintered in a closed tube of fused silica that had been evacuated to lO-4 mm Hg. This was fol- lowed by arc melting the sintered samples under argon. Remelting the button once was sufficient to produce homogeneous specimens. The metal powders had the following minimum purities in wt pct: molybdenum 99.5, iron 99.0, cobalt 99.7, nickel 99.9, graphite 99.94. Carbon determinations by the gas volumetric method were obtained from thirty-one of the one hundred samples in the annealed condition. They were limited to compositions that were critical to placing a boundary line in the isothermal sections. The carbon losses were comparatively low and averaged less than 1.5 at. pct. For annealing, the samples were sealed in tubes of fused silica evacuated to 10-4 mm Hg. The annealing schedule was 20 hr at 1250°C followed by 150 hr at 1000" ±10°C. For the water quench the silica glass tubes were broken mechanically to speed the quench. The specimens were examined in the as-cast and annealed condition by standard metallographic techniques. Some of the as-cast and all annealed samples were studied by X-ray diffraction using a 114.6-mm powder camera with filtered Co radiation. The lattice parameters of the n phases were determined by graphic extrapolation to 8 = 90 deg on a plot against sin2 8. It is estimated that the maximum error in the lattice parameters is ±0.002A.. The phase fields were determined by the disappearing phase method, relying on X-rays for phase identification and on microscopy to detect small amounts of a phase. RESULTS Pertinent information on the binary side diagrams has been summarized by Hansen and Anderko16 and Elliott17 and will not be discussed further. Photomicrographs documenting the equilibria at 1000°C have been selected to avoid redundancy due to the similarity of the three systems. Thus there will be only one picture showing an equilibrium with Mo2C, and so forth. Molybdenum-Iron-Carbon. An isothermal section of most of the Mo-Fe-C system at 1000°C is shown in Fig. 1. No attempt has been made to distinguish between a and y iron or to determine their phase boundaries. A conspicuous absence is the phase Fe2 1Mo2C6 with the Cr23C6 structure, supporting the suggestion by Krainer4 that it decomposes by annealing at high temperatures. The only ternary phase is found in a narrow range around Mo3Fe3C (MO43Fe43C14). A microstructure with a two-phase mixture of Mo + n is seen in Fig. 2. The variation of the lattice parameter of n with the estimated composition is shown in in Table IA. The phase diagram does not agree with the results of Kuo9 who reported n2-Mo4Fe2C. Our lattice parameter Varies from 11.095A at the iron-rich end to 11.140Å at the molybdenum-richoend of the phase field whereas Kuo9reported 11.26Å for Mo4Fe2C. The oxidation properties of Ni-Cr alloys with fine grains, coarse grains, and deformed surface layers have been studied at temperatures of 900" and 1100°C in 0.1 atm of oxygen. The oxidation rates of alloys containing between 10 and 30 wt pct Cr have been found to be dependent upon the grain size of the alloy. Finegrained alloys had smaller oxidation rates than coarsegvained alloys because of the selective oxidation of chromium at alloy grain boundaries. In this compositional range alloys with deformed surface layers behaved similar to fine-grained alloys due to recrys-tallization of the deformed surface layer. In the preceding paper1 it was found that during the oxidation of Ni-Cr alloys, the volume fraction of precipitated Cr2O3 could be greater at alloy grain boundaries than at other areas of the alloy surface. In the case of alloys with chromium concentrations equal to or greater than 30 pct,* the volume fraction of Cr2O3 *AIL compositions are given as weight percent unless specified otherwise. precipitated at grain boundaries and within grains on the alloy surface both exceeded the critical amount required for lateral growth of the Cr2O3 particles and the surfaces of these alloys were completely covered with a continuous, external layer of Cr203 during oxidation. However, in the case of alloys with chromium concentrations between approximately 5 to 30 pct, the volume fraction of precipitated Cr2O3 exceeded the critical value required for external scale formation only at grain boundaries.but not within the interior of the grains. Consequently, the surfaces of these alloys had external scales of Cr3O3 over the grain boundaries but internal Cr2O3 subscales with external scales of NiO away from the grain boundaries. Under these latter conditions, it was found that chromium could diffuse laterally in the alloy from those areas covered with an external layer of Cr2O3, i.e., grain boundaries, to areas where the Cr2O3 was present as a subscale. This diffusion of chromium resulted in an increase in the volume fraction of Cr2O3 precipitated in the sub-scale zone and continuous layers of Cr2O3 could be formed at the subscale front in these regions. For the alloys used in the previous studies,' continuous layers of Cr2O3 were formed on Ni-20Cr alloys in the subscale regions after approximately 30 hr of oxidation at 900°C. For shorter periods of oxidation, the Cr2O3 layer was semicontinuous with the continuous portion at the subscale front emanating from points where the Cr2O3 had been formed as an external scale over alloy grain boundaries. Some lateral growth of a Cr2O3 layer in the subscale region was observed on Ni-15Cr and even Ni-10Cr alloys but this layer was never continuous after 30 hr of oxidation. These results indicate that the selective oxidation of chromium in Ni-Cr alloys with chromium contents between 5 to 30 pct may be dependent upon the grain size of the alloy. Fine-grained specimens in this compositional range should have a larger fraction of the surface covered with external Cr2O3 than coarsegrained specimens and the subscale areas required to be sealed via lateral diffusion of chromium should be smaller. It is therefore to be expected that a continuous layer of Cr2O3 can be formed on alloys in this compositional range after short periods of oxidation providing the alloy grain-size is sufficiently small. bo studieS2,3 have established that the oxidation behavior of alloys can be significantly influenced by pretreatments which produce mechanically deformed surfaces. It has been found that deformed surfaces usually promote the selective oxidation of elements in alloys and it is believed that these effects are due to rapid diffusion of elements in the deformed layer. In view of the previous results,' which showed that alloy grain boundaries may play an important role in the selective oxidation of chromium in Ni-Cr alloys, deformed surfaces may promote the selective oxidation of elements in alloys as a result of the numerous grain boundaries formed on the alloy surfaces via recrys-tallization during heating to the oxidation temperature. The purpose of the present studies was to determine the effect of alloy grain size and surface deformation on the selective oxidation of chromium in Ni-Cr alloys at temperatures of 900" and 1100°C in 0.1 atm of oxygen. EXPERIMENTAL The average grain diameter of the alloys used in the previous studies1 was not less than 0.04 mm and alloys with compositions between 5 and 30 pct chromium had average grain diameters between 0.04 and 0.14 mm. Since the oxidation kinetics were already available for these relatively coarse-grained alloys, it was desirable to use these same alloys in the present studies. The surfaces of the alloys listed in Table I of the previous paper were deformed by using a Model F S.S. White Industrial Airbrasive Unit, which delivered a controlled mixture of 25 µ Al2O3 particles in a stream of dry air at high velocity against the surface of a specimen. The amount of surface deformation produced by this treatment was not determined but a re-crystallized layer about 15 µ thick was formed upon annealing deformed specimens. The grain size at the surface of the specimens was reduced to an average grain diameter of 0.01 mm by annealing the deformed specimens, i.e., grit-blasted,

Protective coatings based on the formation of a surface coating of nickel aluminide (NiAl) were applied to the nickel-base superalloys IN 100, SEL 15, and U-700. Coated specimens were exposed to an oxidizing environment at temperatures between 1600 and 2200 F for times up to 1000 hr. The oxidation resistance and stability of the coating were evaluated by weight gain measurements, metallographic examination, and X-ray diffraction study of surface oxides and coating. The composition of the coating and diffusion zone was determined by electron microprobe traverse of samples before and after high-temperature exposure. Intermediate phases formed in the coating and diffusion zone were identified by X-ray diffraction in situ and after electrolytic extraction. The outer coating was found to consist of the inter-metallic compound, NiAl, while the diffusion zone contained MC, M23C6 or M6C carbides, and a phase in a matrix of NiAl + Nidl. Oxidation resulted in formation of an A1203 n'ch scale containing some Tz02. Depletion of aluminum during oxidation resulted in degradation of the outer coating to Ni3Al and the nickel alloy matrix. Diffusion of aluminum into the base metal was found to be slight and did not influence coating life significantly. The o formed in the diffusion zone during coating decomposed during elevated-temperature exposure to form stable carbide phases characteristic of the base metal. Diffusion zone phase changes were found to have no effect on the life of the aluminide coating in the oxidizing envzron?nent. THE oxidation resistance of many high-strength nickel-base superalloys is inadequate for extended exposure at temperatures above about 1600°F. In addition, some applications for these materials require that they be exposed to environments containing sulfur compounds and sodium salts which can cause surface attalk known as sulfidation or hot corrosion. In order to provide the necessary corrosion resistance to the high-strength alloys, protective coatings based on an aluminizing process have been developed. These processes, usually based on a pack cementation technique, result in the formation of a NiAl-rich outer coating layer either during the coating process or by a subsequent diffusion treatment. The performance of the aluminide coatings is affected by interactions between the coating layer and the base metal both during the coating process and during subsequent exposure at elevated temperatures. Knowledge of these interactions is required to guide the development of coatings capable of longer life and improved reliability. Goward et al.' recently reported the metallurgical factors which influence coating per- formance on MAR-M200. The present work is concerned with correlating the interactions and performance of coating compositions on several representative materials. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials. Three cast nickel-base superalloys which are used for turbine buckets in air-breathing engines were studied: IN 100, U-700, and SEL 15. Their chemical compositions are given in Table I. The alloys were vacuum-induction-melted and cast to slabs approximately 0.3 in. thick from which rectangular specimens 0.25 by 0.5 by 1 in. were machined. Coating Procedures. The machined specimens were coated by CODEP processes which were developed at the author's laboratory. These are based on pack cementation in various media to deposit either aluminum or aluminum in combination with titanium. The coating process which deposits only aluminum is designated CODEP-C, while the CODEP-D process deposits titanium in combination with aluminum. The CODEP-D process was applied only to IN 100. Both CODEP processes are applied at 1950" or 2000°F for 4 hr without need for a subsequent diffusion treatment. An outer coating about 1 mil in thickness is produced by these processes. Test Procedures. Coated specimens were exposed to static oxidation for periods ranging from 24 to 1000 hr at temperatures of 1600" to 2200°F. Terminal weight gain measurements and visual examination were used to evaluate oxidation resistance. including oxide spalling and coating failure. Both as-coated and exposed specimens of each alloy were studied by metallographic examination, electron microprobe analysis (EMA), and X-ray diffraction analysis either of the exposed surfaces or of phases extracted from the coating and diffusion zone. RESULTS As-Coated Condition. The microstructures of as-coated conditions were generally similar, irrespective of base materials or the particular coating process. They are typified by IN 100 coated by CODEP-D as shown in Fig. 1. The predominately single-phase outer layer, area A, Fig. 1, was identified by X-ray diffraction as the intermetallic compound NiA1. The NiAl zone extended inward to the original base metal interface. The diffusion zone, area B, Fig. 1, included carbide phases, a lamellar phase oriented perpendicular to the base metal surface, and a matrix phase consisting of a mixture of NiAl and Ni3Al. The phases in the diffusion zone were electrolytically extracted using a 10 pct HCl in methanol solution at approximately 1.3 amp per sq cm. The extracted phases were found to be M6C, MC, or M=C6 carbides and o as shown in Table I1 for each of the alloys. The d spacings from a typical diffraction pattern are

IN August 1954 a low altitude test geophysical survey was made in the Green Pond area of Morris County, New Jersey, with a Gulf Research and Development Co. Model II total magnetic field variation magnetometer mounted in a Sikorsky S-55 helicopter. The test was made in this area to compare the results of a high precision, very low altitude magnetometer survey with an existing ground magnetic survey in this area having known magnetite concentrations, so that the method could be used in areas of difficult access for the detailing of airborne magnetometer anomalies of interest in place of ground surveys. The load capacity of the Sikorsky S-55 permitted installation of a recording scintillation counter so that a radioactivity survey would be made simultaneously with the magnetometer survey. The area surveyed is located at approximately 41°00'N and 74o28'W, just south and east of the town of Green Pond, N. J. The outstanding topographic feature of the region is Copperas Mountain, a well defined ridge, maximum elevation 1222 ft, which runs the entire length of the survey. The lowest point in the survey, 810 ft, is in the extreme eastern corner. Topography of the area is shown in Fig. 1. The three major rock units outcropping in the area are all metamorphic: the Pochuck gneiss, which has been divided into two metamorphic facies; the Byram gneiss; and the Green Pond conglomerate. The relative ages of the Pochuck and Byram formations, both pre-Cambrian, are in doubt, but it is believed that the Pochuck is the older of the two.' The Green Pond conglomerate is Silurian.' Distribution of the outcrops and mine locations is shown in Fig. 1. Two facies of the Pochuck gneiss can be distinguished locally—the Copperas Mountain and Kitchell members. The Copperas Mountain member is a hornblende gneiss, and all the mines and prospects in the area are in this unit. The Kitchell is a quartz-plagioclase feldspar gneiss. The Byram gneiss is a relatively nonresistant valley formation which is high in the potash feldspar. The Green Pond conglomerate is a well indurated quartzite-conglomerate which forms the Copperas Mountain and the Green Pond Mountain's ridge to the north. It overlies the gneisses with a strong angular discordance that may be a fault. The geologic structure of the Green Pond area is relatively uncomplicated. The foliation planes of the gneisses dip steeply to the southeast, and the Green Pond conglomerate dips steeply to the northwest. Additional faulting in the area is indicated at the contact between the Kitchell member of the Pochuck and the Byram along the base of the topographic spur extending to the southeast from Copperas Mountain. The magnetite mines of Pardee, Winter, Davenport, Green Pond, Copperas, and the Bancroft shaft are described by Bayleyl and Stampe2.' The ore is in the Copperas Mountain member of the Pochuck gneiss. The magnetite veins are 10 to 50 ft wide and up to 300 ft long, dipping to the southeast at angles ranging from 40" to 75". The locations of these mines are shown in Fig. 1. Dip Needle Survey: The dip needle survey shown in Fig. 2 was taken from a U. S. Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations." The figure numbers below the local, individual map area outlines refer to the figures in the aforementioned reports which were not contoured. The area of the dip needle survey was confined almost exclusively to the outcrops of the Pochuck gneiss. The separation between survey profiles was 100 ft and the distance between stations on the profiles was 25 ft in highly anomalous zones to 100 ft in magnetically flat areas. A total of 16 1/2 miles of traverse was surveyed over an area of approximately 1/2 sq mile with 2050 stations. The magnitude of the magnetic anomalies is difficult to determine due to the lack of information concerning the type of dip needle used and the procedure followed in making the dip needle survey. This latter would include the method of "zeroing" the dip needle and the procedure of reading at the stations, whether on the swing or statically. Calibrations made of the Gurley dip needle, Lake Superior type, show a static sensitivity of 385 gamma per degree in the range from —25" to +35o, corresponding to a variation in the total field of —9600 gamma to +13500 gamma in a total field of 57000 gamma, inclination 72". The sensitivity increases to 16 gamma per degree from a deflection of 60" to 76", and from 76" to 172" the sensitivity decreases continuously to a low of 260 gamma per degree. From the above it may be seen that it is difficult to assign an arbitrary sensitivity for the dip needle used on this survey. However, an estimated value of 100 gamma per degree may be assigned. On this basis, the majority of the magnetic anomalies, whose deviation is +20°, would be 2000 gamma. Locally, west and northwest of the Pardee mine the magnetic anomaly is +50°, or 5000 gamma; in the Green Pond mine area deviations of +75" are observed that would correspond to anomalies of 7500 gamma. The areal extent and width of the dip needle magnetic anomalies is comparable to profile and station spacing. Hence it is concluded that part of the detail may be due to control, and the probable cause of the magnetic anomalies is at or near surface exposures of magnetite concentrations in the form of veinlets and disseminations whose locations correspond to the local magnetic anomalies. weight obtained. Additives used in conjunction with salt in these slurries have included silica flour, calcium ligno-sulfonate and cellulose retarders, granular lost-circulation materials, bentonite and selected low-water-loss additives that are not significantly deteriorated by the presence of the chloride ion. In some other areas of South Texas, the salt-saturated slurries have been used quite extensively for improvement of the flow properties of slurries and attainment of better circulation characteristics at lower displacement rates. Concurrently with this property, the protection of shales and shaly sands is also realized, as well as useful retardation of the slurry. Resultant superior cementing jobs have been indicated by both communication tests and acoustic logs for bonding to pipe and formation.' In one section of Louisiana, a major oil company has been using salt-saturated API Class A cement with calcium lignosulfonate retarder for cementing through the Miocene at 9,000 to 10,000 ft. This is another of the situations where interbedding of sands and shales exists, creating difficulty in maintaining formation competency when a fresh-water slurry contacts the clay minerals of the formation. Further work has also been done in the shaly Miocene formation at 13,000 to 15,000 ft where fairly close water or gas contacts are encountered. Indications thus far are that better segregation of these various fluids is obtained by use of the saturated salt slurries because of their improved formation bonding characteristics. In addition to the properties of salt in this situation, attainment of turbulent flow at minimum displacement rates has also been accomplished by use of an additive to help provide exceptional dispersion and viscosity reduction of the slurry. Another oil company was encountering considerable expense in completing wells in Southwestern Louisiana due to extensive block squeeze requirements for effective separation of zones. A very effective mud program was being used to minimize washout in the shale sections and, apparently, a nearly gauge-size hole was being obtained. However, primary cementing results with fresh-water slurries were generally poor. On a few occasions when slurry was actually circulated to the surface, large pieces of shale formation were brought out of the hole with the slurry, indicating a severely water-sensitive, sloughing formation. Inhibition of shale heaving was being accomvlished in the drilling program, and immediately indone ipon circulation of the fresh-water slurry even though it contained a low-fluid-loss additive to reduce filtrate damage in the sands. The subsequent change to salt-saturated slurry yielded 11 successful primary cement jobs out of 12, compared to the previous success ratio of practically zero. Since these were deep, high-temperature wells in the range of 13,000 ft with high-pressure zones necessitating 17.5-lb/gal fluid densities, the slurry used was API Class E cement, silica flour, weight material, retarder, salt saturation (which also reduced the amount of weight material) and maintenance of low fluid loss by use of a salt-compatible additive. Other salt slurries have been used to a limited extent in this same general area for similar problems at depths ranging from 5,000 to 17,000 ft. In the shallower wells, the cement has usually been API Class A where the salt functions as a retarder, and in the deeper wells API Class E cement is used with the additional salt advantage being its increased slurry weight and inability to dissolve salt stringers. A considerable number of squeeze jobs have also been done on older wells using the salt-saturated slurries with very good results. MID-CONTINENT In North Texas, salt-water slurries have been used for cementing the Woodbine sand, Strawn sand, KMA sand and Pettit lime. Shales surrounding these formations have created the same difficulty in obtaining separation of producing zones that has been the problem in other areas. Depths in this area range from 3,400 ft for the Strawn to 7,400 ft for the Woodbine, and concentration of salt has varied accordingly. In the deeper wells, where retardation is desired, saturated salt-water cement is used; for the shallower wells, in order to provide shorter waiting-on-cement times, the amount of salt has been 18 per cent by weight of the mixing water. Results have been excellent with no reported failures on any of the salt cement jobs; where acoustic bond logs have indicated indifferent bonds previously, they are indicating very good bonding for the salt slurries. In Oklahoma various shales of Pennsylvanian age exhibit a high degree of sloughing in the presence of fresh water, causing severe washouts above and below sand formations which it is desired to isolate. This situation exists to some degree in practically all parts of Oklahoma and includes formations of other ages such as the Wood-ford shale. For the past few years, salt-saturated cements and displacement rates as high as practical have been used as a remedy for this problem, with very good results. The Layton and Bartlesville formations are two examples of shaly sands where saturated slurries have been helpful. In one area where five wells were drilled through this type of problem shale without obtaining a satisfactory primary cement job, a change was made to salt-saturated cement preceded by a suitable chemical wash for the drilling mud involved. Acoustic bond logging indicated excellent bonding, and final completion bore out this result by being trouble-free. This type of slurry has also been used extensively on squeeze jobs where shales have been heaving around the producing formations. Predominantly, the basic slurry has been either API Class A cement or a pozzolan cement—although, as deeper wells are being drilled, the use of salt in Class E cement is also increasing. Salt cement in West Texas has been used primarily to help prevent channeling through the shales around the Delaware sand, Queens dolomite and Hope lime. Many of the shaly and dirty sands of this area are sensitive to the filtrate from a fresh-water cement. Salt at 16 to 18 per cent by weight of mixing water has been added to centent, and has been effective in controlling formation damage and communication between zones in these formations. Use of these lower salt concentrations is dictated in this area by the relatively low formation temperatures where retardation of the slurry would create unduly long waiting-on-cement times. Also, quite a bit of cementing has been done in this area using salt concentrations in the accelerating range— that is, 2 to 5 per cent by weight of water. Specifically, these concentrations have been used in coiljunction with high percentages of gel to overcome the retarding effect of the calcium lignosulfonate dispersant, although there are probably several shales where these concentrations could provide some degree of formation stability. On several occasions, the salt has also been used to lower the critical velocity or rate for turbulence with the slurry, particularly in the pozzolan cements. On wells in the Hope lime, it has usually been necessary to squeeze the shale above and below the lime to get a water-free completion. Use of salt-saturated slurries has largely eliminated this

In 1957 research was initiated in the U.S. Bureau of Mines experimental coal mine near Pittsburgh, Pa., to study factors affecting foam generation and transport, to evaluate the effectiveness of high-expansion foam for controlling mine fires, and to develop techniques for applying the method under U.S. mining conditions. These investigations showed that high-expansion foam containing at least 0.2 oz of water per cu ft of foam is effective in controlling experimental underground fires burning coal, wood, and oil. Sometimes the fire was completely extinguished, but more often, it was brought under sufficient control to permit either a direct attack on the fire with a stream of water or loading of the hot material into cars. A progress report' prepared in July 1958 summarized the initial achievements of the USBM experiments. Since then other phases of the foam-plug method for attacking fires have been studied in the laboratory and in the mine. Previous studies by British engineers' of the foam-plug method for fighting mine fires indicated that high-expansion foam was effective in controlling experimental timber fires in an underground passageway. Their subsequent workx-1 pertained to the practical aspects of fighting large fires within a mining area with a foam-plug. CONTROLLING EXPERIMENTAL FIRES In the USBM tests foam was formed by spraying a dilute solution of a foaming agent on a metal or cotton net of 1/8 to 1/4-in. mesh. Air passing through the continuously wetted net forms bubbles of 1/2 to 11/2-in. diam and produces a honeycomb of foam that fills the passageway. Under the ventilating-air pressure, this light-weight plug moves forward through the passageways, around sharp corners, and over obstacles. as illustrated in Fig. 1. High-expansion foam was transported to a wood fire, an oil fire, and 13 coal fires. Figs. 3 and 4 show a typical coal fire before and after attack with foam. In 12 of the 15 experiments the fire was brought under control when the water content of foam was 0.2 oz or more per cu ft. A fire was considered controlled when the flames were quenched and observers could cross the area without wearing breathing apparatus or protective clothing. In the other three experiments, conducted when the water content was less than 0.2 oz per cu ft of foam, the flames were retarded but the fire was not controlled. Coal fires have been attacked successfully by foam introduced at points varying from 155 to 1010 ft from the fire. The time of burning in coal beds 10 in. thick ranged from 11/2 to 5 hrs or more. Most of the experimental fire beds were 15 ft in length. However, in one experiment a floor fire 25 ft long and 5 ft wide was constructed $5 upwind from another fire 15 ft in length; in another instance, the fire was 100 ft long and 5 ft wide. Foam was applied to the fires for periods ranging from 7 to 36 min. The time required for foam application depends on the extent of the fire, time of burning, water content of foam, foam velocity, and degree of fire control desired. In addition to the coal fires, foam was transported to a fire covering 45 sq ft, produced by 15 gal of oil burning in metal trays on the floor. The foam extinguished the oil fire in about 1 min. In one other test, the burning of 1100 lb of dry sawmill slabs stacked in open cribs 4 ft high and 16 ft long was brought under control by foam in 2 min. Composition of Gases in Return Air: In several of the experiments samples of the return air from fire zones were collected; composition of the atmosphere before, during, and after foam application was then determined. Because of condensation in the relatively cool sampling tube, the amount of water vapor was not determined. Analyses showed that concentration of carbon dioxide and combustible gases increased as the foam began passing over the fire. This resulted from the decrease in the volume of air when foam generation started and from the formation of gases when water reached the fire.* The quantity of gases generated would not be greater than that from an equivalent amount of water applied directly to the fire. The highest total concentration of combustibles (CO, CH1, and H2 mixture) obtained during the experiment was about 2 pct; this occurred 6 min after foam reached the fire. This atmosphere was nonex-plosive, but calculations show that if the air flow were reduced to about 5 fpm and if the rate of gas liberation from the fire remained constant, the mixture would be explosive. The use of foam on a fire in all probability would affect the normal ventilation of a mine. If the mine is gassy, this factor must be carefully considered before the foam is applied. APPLICATION OF THE FOAM-PLUG TECHNIQUE IN MINES Equipment and procedures for applying the foam-plug methods must be adapted to the prevailing conditions at a particular mine. Some factors to be considered in developing equipment are: size or extent of the mine, dimensions and number of entries, ventilation system, mining methods, haulage facilities, availability of water, amount of methane liberated, and existing fire-control apparatus. • In most experiments the initial air velocity of 200 fpm decreased to 50 to 100 fpm as the foam plug increased In length.

A knowledge of the magnitude of the irreducible inter.;titial water in a porous medium is so important to petroleum engineering that its determination has become routine in core analyses. The method of determination, being a production problem, should encompass the basic requirements of simplicity in technique and calculations, with reproducible results obtainable in a short interval of time. The results of the evaluation tests outlined in this report indicate that the evaporation method for determining the irreducible water is a technique which meets the requirements. The procedure consists, as the name implies. of permitting the saturant in the pore spaces to evaporate until only an irreducible volume remains. The determination of this volume can be made either graphically or by a mathematical comparison of fluid flows; the time required for each determination being dependent on the fluid used. When fluids other than those having reservoir characteristics were used, a volume factor had to be calculated which was based on the relative volume of various liquids adsorbed on grain surfaces and retained in pores. This factor made possible the calculation of an irreducible water volume when more volatile fluids such as toluene and benzene were used as the saturants. Also presented is the theoretical discussion necessary for the calculation of the capillary pressure as determined from the evaporation curve. A comparison is made between the calculated values and those obtained by experimental means. INTRODUCTION In all geological formations there exists, in the pore spaces of the rock structure, water that is held in a state of equilibrium between capillary and hydrostatic forces. "Interstitial water" is the term given to this water and is defined as that water coexisting in the pore space with the oil prior to exploitation. The term ''connate water" has often been used synonymously with this term; however, this can be true only by a specific definition since, geologically, it means the water in place at the time the rock structure was formed. The quantity of the interstitial water is a variable factor in any formation, since it depends on the hydrostatic forces present in any multiple-phase system. These forces may become unbalanced by the introduction of an extraneous force such as the raising or lowering of the "water table" or the migration of oil into a water-filled formation. Any unbalanced force results in a change in the interstitial water. There exists, however, an irreducible interstitial water. for a particular sand, that is the fraction of the pore space occupied by water when the capillary pressure at the particular point in question is at an equilibrium with the hydrostatic head of the oil sand in the reservoir. For this discussion the term "irreducible water saturation" will be used in place of "irreducible interstitial water saturation" for the sake of brevity; however, they are understood to be identical. A great amount of work has been devoted to the theory and methods for studying the irreducible water saturation and its related capillary pressure. As a result of the publications of Leverett;' Hassler, Brunner and Deahl;2 Calhoun and Lewis;3 and others, the role of capillary pressure studies is being accepted by the industry as a tool for studying suhsurface phenomena. Many techniques have been developed and published for determining the capillary pressure and irreducible water. In general, these techniques may be grouped into three classifications. One of the first was the capillary pressure method described by Leverett1 and expanded by Bruce and Welge.4 The experimental results were compared with water saturation of cores obtained using oil-base mud. Thornton and Marshall compared the irreducible water saturation of core samples determined by the capillary pressure method and by salinity and reported good agreement between the two methods. The second classification for determining the irreducible water and capillary pressure may be referred to as the "centrifugal force method." The general technique is similar to the capillary pressure method except that the force driving the reservoir fluid from the sample is of a centrifugal nature. A complete description of this method was presented by J. J. . McCullough and F. W. Albaugh.6 A process, the reverse of the capillary pressure method, was presented by W. R. Purcell.7 Mercury under pressure is driven into the pores of the rock and the saturation of the core determined at each applied pressure. The resulting capillary pressure curve is used to evaluate the irreducible water saturation. The techniques mentioned are singular in their approach to the irreducible water saturation. In all cases. an external force was applied to the core. The forces employed in the evaporation method are the vapor pressure of the liquid causing evaporation, the kinetic diffusion forces. adsorptive forces and. to a lesser degree, the viscous forces resisting flow to the surface. The basic definition of irreducible water is that water held in a state of equilibrium between capillary and hydrostatic forces This water has been described by previous investigators as being held in the microcapillaries too small to support fluid flow. Actually, this fluid volume is made up of the water in the microcapillaries and as a film adhering to the surface of the crystals. All capillaries. therefore, possess some liquid as a film, the thickness of the film being dependent on the properties of the fluid and solid. A discussion of experiments with references pertaining to the measurement of this immobile layer next to the solid surface can be found in the text by J. J. Bikerman.8 Eversole and Lahr calculated the thickness of this layer to be in the order of 10 ' to 10' cm for aqueous solutions and glass. Between two quartz surfaces they found the thickness to be 2 x 10 cm. The work of Volkova, on the capillary movement of water and toluene in quartz grains, indicated the thickness of the Immobile layers to be near 10' cm. Since any measurement is an average value, it is easy to understand that an absolute value would depend on the roughness of the surfaces involved and the complexity of the system. A calculated effective pore radius of 2 x 10 cm is obtained at the, irreducible saturation of a porous media in a water-air system when a capillary pressure of 100 psi is applied. Since the separation of the sand grains is of the same approximate magnitude as the immobile layer.

Binary iron alloys containing 1 pct of Al, Cr, Mn, Mo, Si, Ti, or V, and 0.4 pct C, 1 pct Cr steels with and without 1.2 pct A1 or 2.0 pct Ti additions, were ion-nilrided at 550° to 600° in N-H mixtures. Nitriding increased the inicrohardne ss of all the binary alloys except those containing manganese or molybdenutn, and also hardened the heat-treated steels if aluminum or titanium urns present. Transmission electron microscopy revealed particle formation in all casts where hardening occurred. Electron diffraction gare positive identifications for ALN, CrN, and a, Si3N4 in the binary alloys, and AlN and CrN in the aluminum- cold chromium-bearing steels, respectil&apos;uly. Cubic VN with a, = 4.13A was tentatively identified. Particles, apparently of CrN, also formed in the base steel but did not increase the hardness very much. Chromium and vanadium formed nitride platelets on {001}° matrix planes, while titanium gave clusters <15A diam. Aluminum nitride precipitated at grain and subgrain boundaries, and within the grains. Silicon gave profuse precipitates of several Morphologies at grain boundaries and cubical particles within the grains. No effect of the alloy carbides on nitride precipitation was observed in the heat-treated steels. THE nitriding of steel has been a well-established commercial process for about 40 years, but in spite of this comparatively long period of use there have been few studies aimed at understanding the process. Most studies, like the early but very competent work of Jones and organ&apos; and nones.&apos; were concerned with establishing the pertinent engineering variables of steel composition, gas composition, temperature, and time. As far as the present authors are aware, there have been no studies of the composition, size, shape, or distribution of the nitrides formed in the nitriding of steel. Noren and Kindbom3 did, however, examine a few nitrided steels by surface replica electron microscopy, and were able to show the presence of car-bonitrides and AlN and TiN nitrides. pitsch4,5 and Hrivnak6 examined nitrided pure iron by transmission electron microscopy. Baird7 found manganese nitrides in Fe-1.6 pct Mn when nitrided at 650°C, using the same technique. In the present work, emphasis was placed on transmission electron microscopy because of its inherently better resolution, using principally binary alloys of iron containing 1 pct of alloying element. In addition, a few simple 0.4 pct C steel compositions were examined to investigate possible carbonitride formation. It was not anticipated that all of the added elements would form nitrides under the conditions used, but it was considered desirable to obtain direct experimental evidence on this point. It would be considerably easier to ascertain the presence of alloy nitrides by examining appropriate binary alloys in preference to relatively complex steels. The work reported here could have been done using orthodox ammonia-nitriding procedures, but an operating ion-nitriding equipment was available, and was therefore used for specimen preparation. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS 1) Materials. Binary alloys were made up from vacuum-melted electrolytic iron with 1 wt pct additions of Cr, Ti, V, Al, Mn, Mo, and Si of about 99.9 pct purity. In addition, three steels were similarly made up—a basis steel with 1 wt pct Cr and 0.4 wt pct C and two steels with further additions of 1.2 wt pct A1 or 2.0 wt pct Ti, respectively. The materials were vacuum-melted and cast as 11-lb heats into tapered square molds of about 2 by 2 in. average cross section. The castings were forged and hot-rolled to 11/4 in. rounds. Discs of 4 in. thickness by about 1 in. diam were machined from the rods. Some of these discs were hot-forged and hot-rolled to about 0.020 in. thick, sand-blasted, and then cold-rolled to about 0.003 in. thick. At this point, the surface was cleaned by light etching with HC1, then washed, dried, and vapor-degreased prior to nitriding. 2) Ion-Nitriding Procedure. The type of ion-nitriding equipment used here is similar to that described by Jones and Martin.8 Briefly, a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen at 5 mm total pressure is placed in a vacuum chamber with a dc potential of 450 to 500 v applied between the work (cathode) and the grounded metal vacuum enclosure (anode). Nitrogen ions are accelerated to the work where a thin layer of Fe4N forms on the surface and thus sets up a nitrogen concentration gradient. This causes nitrogen atoms to diffuse into the surface layers of the alloy forming a finely divided dispersion of alloy nitrides, causing hardening of the surface. In the work to be reported here. the nitriding was carried out at 550° to 600°C to be consistent with commercial nitriding practice. The temperatures cited are those measured by a thermocouple located under a platform on which the work was sitting. Except where otherwise stated, the mixture used in nitriding the binary alloys contained -2.0 pct N, balance hydrogen. The nitrogen concentration in the nitriding gas mixture used for the binary alloys was purposely kept lower than normally used in nitriding steels. 10 to 20 pct, in order to minimize Fe4N formation. MAGNESIUM is an exceedingly strategic material but the importance of its production at the time this war started was not realized. Our Government then suddenly became much alive to the need of a tremendous increase in magnesium output, and became a participator in the industry. In this paper an attempt will be made to given an over-all picture of the industry as it has been, and is being, developed. The present war is giving a great acceleration to the use of lighter metals. Development of facilities for production of great tonnages of aluminum and magnesium is bound to bring about some interesting changes in later peace times because costs will be low and production capacities high. As our knowledge of the metallurgy of magnesium alloys increases, this metal will become of vital peacetime importance and will be used in ways we do not now imagine. Household refrigerators, furniture, automobiles, even houses will all be lightened through the use of magnesium.

JOHNSON, JR., Ashland, Wis. :-Is it true that titanium reduces the chill in chilling iron? If so, as I think Mr. Stoughton has stated elsewhere, then I do not see how titanium is beneficial in car-wheel mixtures. One of the most difficult things to do is to get a proper chill and a proper degree of toughness, and the goodness of an iron of the given composition for charcoal-iron purposes is denoted by the chill which it will take as compared with its composition. If titanium reduces that chill, then it does not seem to me as good for car-wheels as its absence would be, and I should like to have it explained what effect titanium has on the chill of a given iron. MR. STOUGHTON : It is true that titanium reduces the chill of iron quite noticeably, yet, at the same time, if I am correctly informed, 90 per cent. of all chilled-iron rolls are made to-day with the titanium treatment, and a great many car-wheels, but one has to make changes in the silicon added and also, if I am correctly informed, in the manganese. The advantage of titanium is that when the proper changes are made, so that we get the same depth of chill with the titanium as we otherwise would without, the chill is much harder than before, and also the body of the roll or wheel is tougher and somewhat stronger, especially under shock. WHEN gold was discovered in California, and San Francisco grew almost over night from a handful of people to many thousands, one of the first difficulties experienced was the lack of money. Gold dust in considerable quantities was rushed into the city from the various mining camps but there was no money. Purchases were paid for by weighing out dust in hand scales. We can appreciate&apos; the difficulty of paying for a drink or buying a postage stamp under these conditions. All this gold was in the form of dust from placer workings and the first metallurgists were the assayers&apos; who melted and refined this gold, casting it into bars which were weighed, assayed, stamped with fineness; value, and the name of the assayer. Many .of these plants were of considerable size, handling shipments that were accumulated by banks and express companies throughout the "Diggings" and sent to San Francisco to be shipped by water to the eastern states. This is the responsibility the United Nations, and particularly the United States, will incur the through limitation of the economic activities of nations that are now friendly to us, as well as of nations that are enemies or are under the control of enemies. After the war all nations, friends as well as enemies will be poor. Hunger and bankruptcy will, will like the sword of Damocles, hang over the heads of all of us on this blundering planet. When the actual fighting is over, there will be a universal attempt to squirm out from under the sword by resuming production of peacetime goods, for trade as well as immediate consumption.

THE Mining Methods sessions, one of which was run jointly with the Industrial Minerals Division, were fortunate in having a number of exceptionally fine papers. At the Tuesday session R. P. Smith presented the results of six years&apos; experience with prepaid medical care for the employees of the Hollinger mine. It was felt that this paper was a real contribution to the cross field of mining-medicine, and the presentation was exceptionally well done. Olof V. Lindqvist acquainted us with the consider- able progress made in blast-hole diamond drilling in recent times, especially in Canada. The opening of a mine is always a matter of considerable interest and the description of the procedure and problems encountered in opening the Mather mine of Cleveland Cliffs Iron was presented by L. C. Moore.

ENGINEERING educators have recently been discussing the advisability of extending the undergraduate curricula to five or six years, and a plan has also been proposed requiring a preliminary period of study in the liberal arts college before admission to the engineering college. Extension of the undergraduate curricula has been suggested as a means of more fully covering the subject matter in the major field of study. Interest in this proposed plan of requiring a preliminary period of study in the liberal arts college has been heightened through a bill recently introduced in the legislature of the State of New York. This plan intends to give a more professional status to engineering, and credit for these additional years of study would be allowed to those engineers applying for professional licensure. As a result of the interest in engineering curricula and due to the impetus given by these proposed plans a general reexamination of curricula has been conducted by a large number of schools with the stated purpose of determining if the present curricula are meeting the aims and scopes of engineering education.

THE growing dependence of our vast industrial civilization (:n mineral products demands today, as never before, the highest technical skill in those who produce these product-;. That the duty of training the engineers, whose responsibility it is to produce these mineral products efficiently and in sufficient amount, falls directly on the schools of mining is beginning to be more fully recognized. The Institute, realizing this fact and that its future membership depends largely on the annual accretion of young men, is showing a keen interest in the problems of the mining schools and in the work of its Committee on Engineering Education. The Committee has, during the past several years, considered the problems connected with the training of men for the mineral industry, whether these have been problems of college training, or placement of the young engineer in the industry, or personnel training after he enters the industry. The field of interest and discussion has been as broad and varied as the mineral industry itself. Coal mining, metal mining and metallurgy have been discussed and the papers on these subjects have been outstanding contributions to the literature on mineral education.

MINE safety is of the utmost importance to all operators and most operations have a safety organization, or safety inspector, whose job it is to be continually on the alert to detect and correct the hazards of mine operation. Reports from the Bureau of Mines show that next to roof falls, gas presents the greatest hazard in mining. The Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6680 shows that 162 explosions occurred in the United States during the five-year period ending June 30, 1932. Deaths resulting from these explosions amounted to 984, with a great many disabled and disfigured. A fatality rate of 6.07 persons shows the ex¬treme severity of this hazard to the industry. Various mine appliance companies have put on the market instruments for methane detection, which record in direct percentages the amount of methane present in the atmosphere. Unfortunately, few mining companies are using these instruments, however. Those available include the Burrell methane detector, the Wolf, the Martienssen, the Mine Safety Appliance detector, and the Union Carbide Company methane detector, which last I have used extensively in making mine inspections.
