This second progress report of grinding presents comments regarding ball consumption and data pertaining to the hydroscillator, which is closed circuited with the tricone mill. A study and postulate of how balls function is presented. The paper summarizes cost reduction obtained by the method of "grinding for the tail race" rather than for "mesh tons." AT the Regional meeting in Columbus, Ohio, in September 1949, the authors presented a progress report of the first year's operation with a Hardinge tricone mill in closed circuit with a Dorr hydroscillator. The present report covers our findings on this grinding circuit to January, 1950. In order to clarify our position, the authors wish to state that no invention or discovery is claimed. The Tennessee grinding circuit is simply an engineered arrangement of known equipment arranged to incorporate all of the recognized efficiency factors of comminution as they are known today. As we concluded our first report, it was not clear how effective the Tennessee mode of operation would be on harder ores. The only information we had at that time was that the Bond grindability test at 48-mesh gave 6.04 g of undersize per revolution. A later test on the same sample at 100-mesh reduced this to 2.04 g, which is definitely in the harder ore class, and which makes the reported 8.80 kw-hr per ton of —200-mesh produced a very creditable figure. Hydroscillator Operation The machine as now developed has proved dependable and easy to operate. It starts easily under full load and responds quickly to operating adjustments. The hydraulic holes in the oscillating plate do not plug when shut down under full load. Absolutely clean hydraulic water is essential. An Elliott water screen or similar device should be an essential part of the machine to keep all scale and trash of all kinds from the hydraulic compartment. The shift operators have expressed approval of the machine. In table I we show a typical screen analysis of the hydroscillator rake sand as compared to conventional classifier rake sand on our ore. We have previously reported that of the 28.7 pct reduction in power, the hydroscillator contributed 6 pct, on a —200-mesh basis. This is a conservative figure. Some of our test runs indicated that the saving was as high as 10 pct. Laboratory studies by the Dorr Co. engineers indicate that still greater efficiency is possible. IN the production of alloys by powder metallurgical processes it is often necessary or desirable to include one or more components that tend to form very stable oxides Included in this group of metals are aluminum, manganese, magnesium, silicon, and a few others In many cases it is not necessary for the sintered compact to have full density and the other physical characteristics of a cast alloy and in that event no undue precautions need be taken If, however, it s required that the sintered part be entirely homogeneous, and have maximum density and physical properties, some method must be found to reduce the surface films of oxide, which are always present on the metals, and for the metals mentioned above this is always extremely difficult, if not impossible Since the production of high-density alloys is of particular interest to powder metallurgists, some experiments were undertaken to devise methods of reducing the refractory oxides For this work, alloys of iron, nickel, and aluminum were chosen because aluminum oxide is one of the most stable oxides and because these alloys in the right compositions form excellent permanent magnets All of the pertinent properties of the magnets could be accurately and delicately measured by density measurements and magnetic tests of sufficient scope to give a complete demagnetization curve From such a curve the maximum coercive force, residual magnetism, and energy products could be obtained and compared with the same properties for a cast material Any lack of homogeneity, density, or solid diffusion would be immediately apparent as a decrease in the magnetic properties NATURE AND REMOVAL OF SURFACE BARRIERS The early work of the present investigation was based upon published processes In the published information it was claimed that by intimately mixing iron, nickel, and iron-aluminum alloy (50 per cent Fe, 50 per cent Al) powders, compressing such a mixture into the desired shape and size, and then sintering (heating to a temperature below the melting point of the component metals) in hydrogen at 1200ºC or higher, a sound, homogeneous article could be made having the desired physical size, shape, and strength, and good magnetic characteristics However, this early work showed clearly that something in the powder compress was inhibiting diffusion and the process was almost entirely unworkable In the initial phase of the investigation samples of iron powder, nickel powder, and iron-aluminum alloy powder were pressed into separate bars and sintered in hydrogen Both the iron and nickel powders sintered

AS a matter of the most widespread interest to lead-refining metallurgists, the process of desilverizing lead originated by Parkes is the most fundamental step in lead refining. While this basic operation, in addition to effecting a practically complete recovery of gold and silver, is also a great purifying operation and a governor on the purity and uniformity of the final refined lead, it has the important deficiency that no bismuth is removed in the operation. The problem of finding a satisfactory, inexpensive method for removal of bismuth that would fit in with the basic desilverization step has been one of enticing interest for lead-refinery metallurgists for many years. Of late it has become one of imperative interest, and while many attempts and much progress have been made, it is probably fair to say that metallurgical progress thus far is only catching up with commercial requirements. The Pattinson process, an original competitor of the Parkes process for desilverization, has received much attention for its possibilities for bismuth removal. Bismuth concentrations in the Pattinson process fall far short of the silver concentrations and as a result too many operations are required and a crawl in grade in the kettle units is experienced which requires periodic correction. Altogether, it has proved too expensive a remedy, from the cost standpoint of both installation and operation. The Betts electrolytic process is a fully satisfactory remedy but its present status in the field of lead refining is more a matter of bismuth removal than preference as a refining system, except, of course, in instances particularly favorable to the basic requirements of the process. The Betts process, of course, is essentially different from the Parkes process, and very difficult to associate therewith to any economy except in minor ways. Accordingly, where economy dictates the Parkes process, and this is true of far the greater portion of the world's tonnage, the adoption of the Betts process primarily for bismuth removal is apt to prove an expensive remedy on account of its normally higher cost of operation, inelasticity of the equipment for variable tonnages, and high per ton cost of installation.

Fully a decade ago, demand for ground mica began to exceed supplies of scrap mica from manufacturing operations and of waste block from feldspar and sheet mica mining in the United States, with the result that in recent years the market has absorbed larger and larger quantities of mica recovered as a by-product from clay washing,1 as a joint product with kyanite12 and by grinding schists. So far, only schists that contain a large percentage of mica have been utilized for making ground mica, but already there has been a good deal of wishful thinking with regard to recovering mica as an aid to the prospective working of low-grade gold ores and ores of certain base metals. With wet-ground mica selling at $60 to $100 a ton and even dry-ground mica worth over $20 a ton, many ores that could not be considered as otherwise workable under present conditions will show commercial possibilities if they can be made to yield even a relatively small percentage of salable mica. An interesting paper might be written on the coming role of industrial minerals as joint products of metal mines. It is largely a matter of markets. Many years ago I watched the mess left behind the gold dredges in the mountains of Colorado and thought of the Denver sand and gravel operators who prided themselves upon their canniness in providing devices for catching gold merely as an incident to their regular business of selling what we miners classed as "tailings." Nowadays almost every milling or mining operation near settled communities finds use for at least part of its waste for road material or concrete aggregate and several eastern iron mines have gone into the crushed-stone business. Promoters now mention fertilizer "filler" as potentially salable at all the way from $1 to $10 a ton, or whatever is needed to cover costs of mining and treating the "ore" and leave the metal values as "clear profit." RECENTLY it has been shown that aggregates of small liquid droplets of tin,' mercury' or gallium' kept from intercommunicating by suitable films do not solidify at an appreciable rate unless the supercooling is very much greater than that usually necessary to cause a large continuous mass of the metal to solidify. For example oxide-coated tin droplets1 (1 to 10 micron diam) must be supercooled 100" to 110°C before their rate of solidification becomes rapid, although large continuous masses of liquid tin usually begin to solidify when supercooled 30" or less." These experiments have been interpreted' on the hypothesis that nucleation of crystals in large continuous metal samples is almost always catalyzed by accidental inclusions. Therefore, if the metal is dispersed into a number of isolated droplets large in comparison with the number of inclusions, most of the droplets should not crystallize until a temperature sufficiently below the thermodynamic melt- ing point, T0, has been reached to permit an ap-preciable rate of homogeneous (noncatalyzed) nu-cleation. In general this temperature is very much less than the temperature at which the rate of heterogeneous (catalyzed) nucleation is appreciable. If this interpretation is correct then investigation of the kinetics of crystallization of small droplet aggregates should be one of the most fruitful methods of obtaining information about the homogeneous formation of crystal nuclei in liquids. In this paper the results obtained on gallium and mercury are reported more fully. In addition, results on the supercooling of aggregates of liquid bismuth and lead droplets are included. Experimental Procedure Some care must be exercised in the choice of a barrier to prevent the liquid droplets from coalescing lest the barrier itself catalyze the formation of crystal nuclei. From this standpoint, the most desirable barrier is vacuum or inert gas, but, because of the difficulty of experimental arrangement, solid compounds and adsorbed films have been selected. There are two guiding principles in the selection of compounds as barriers in addition to the requirement that they prevent coalescence of liquid droplets. First, the compound should be almost insoluble in the liquid metal and second, its lattice structure should be quite unlike that of the forming metal crystal. Even so, there is no a priori assurance that the solid compound film will not catalyze to some extent the formation of metal crystal nuclei. An adsorbed protective monolayer is less likely to be catalytic than a crystal compound film, but it is not often possible to find a monolayer that is stable under the experimental conditions. Also, it is desirable, though not generally essential, that the aggregate of droplets be prepared by breaking up the massive metal rather than from a powdered compound of the metal.

THE thermal processes for the production of metallic magnesium can be divided into two general classifications, the direct reduction of magnesia with carbon and the indirect reduction of compounds of magnesium by reducing agents that are themselves products of carbon reduction. The latter are so chosen as to cause reduction of magnesium compounds wherein only the magnesium is liberated in the vapor phase. Reducing agents used are: calcium carbide, silicon carbide, silicon, aluminum, various silicides or combinations of calcium, aluminum, silicon in iron. All of these are products of highly endothermic reactions and, with the exception of scrap aluminum, can be produced in an open, submerged arc furnace; that is, the arc is covered only by the charge itself. The more investment in energy required to prepare such a reducing agent, the less is the energy required in the subsequent step to reduce the magnesium compound to the metal. It is impossible, however, to avoid the laws of thermodynamics, no matter how much circumambulation is resorted to in the preparation of successively more powerful reducing agents. Since each such step carries forward its own inefficiencies, it appears evident that the ultimate status of such processes is dependent upon the development of by-products. EARLY EXPERIMENTS IN DIRECT REDUCTION The direct reduction of magnesium oxide by carbon has a decided appeal to both the scientist and the industrialist. The successful production of the carbothermic plant at Permanente is a significant fact in the substantiation of this concept. Like most developments, however, the history of carbon reduction of magnesia is not one of triumph after triumph, or immediate heady success to the investigators. It is understood that one of the early investigators conducted an experiment wherein he placed carbon and magnesia in one end of an evacuated tube and managed to heat this end to a temperature high enough that magnesia and carbon deposited at the other end of the tube. The charge, unreduced, appeared to have been completely transported from the hot to the cold end of the tube. This raised doubt for some time as to whether magnesia could be reduced at all with carbon. It was correctly suspected, however, that the magnesia was in fact reduced and the resultant magnesium vapor and carbon monoxide reacted upon one another upon reduction in temperature to reform the starting ingredients. Attempts were then made to dilute the two vapors by passing a considerable stream of hydrogen through an arc furnace charged with magnesia and carbon. FLOTATION may be defined as a process whereby mineral particles are concentrated by selective adhesion to air-liquid interfaces. The process involves attachment of desired mineral particles to air bubbles, and removal of the mineralized air bubbles from the surface of the pulp as a mineral concentrate. PROBLEM Although great strides have been made in understanding the principles of flotation, one part of the process which has not been adequately explained is the mechanism by which selected mineral particles become attached to air bubbles. A glance at the froth of an operating flotation cell demonstrates adequately that use of proper reagents and conditions will result in such attachments; but how such attachment takes place is not definitely known. A better knowledge of this factor might lead to improved flotation practice either through altered machine design or the application of scientific innovations. Direct observation of the behavior of mineral particles and bubbles in an operating cell does not appear promising because of the complexity of the system. For this reason, conclusions concerning the problem must be deduced from theoretical considerations or from observation of simplified systems designed to reproduce conditions thought to exist in an operating cell. PRESENT THEORIES Two mechanisms have been recognized as fundamental in particle-bubble attachment: gas precipitation and direct encounter. It is a simple matter to demonstrate in the laboratory that attachment can be brought about by either mechanism. As to the relative importance of the two in a particular flotation system, however, there is a divergence of views. Taggart1 states, Under exceptional circumstances sufficient force and time to effect attachment may conjoin in an ore pulp undergoing agitation, and a preformed bubble adhere to a collector-coated mineral particle, but the occurrence is rare. . . . Pulp-body froth flotation effects selection in the body of a conditioned pulp by causing gas bubbles to precipitate from solution in the liquid phase preferentially at the surfaces of collector-coated particles, and to cling to these particles. Gaudin2 states that, within the pulp body of an agitation machine, attachment of mineral particles to air bubbles occurs as a consequence of contact between the two. This theory has been supported by theoretical reasoning and much circumstantial evidence. The year 1940 saw an increase of 20 per cent in oil production over the previous year—compared with a 16 per cent increase the previous year. In all, 25,790,380 bbl. were produced, an increase of 4,414,150 bbl, over 1939 and the largest production figure for south Arkansas since 1928. The older settled production continued to decline. Magnolia accounted for most of the increase, with aid from the other recent deep fields. During the year, 169 wells were drilled, 79 fewer than in the previous year. Of 131 wells drilled in proven fields, 18 were dry. Three of the 38 wildcats were pool openers. The drilling depth record was increased from 9028 to 9550 feet. Trend of Prospecting For the first time since 1936, the search for oil in the deep Smackover limestone slackened perceptibly; g dry wildcats ended in Smackover, 2 in. the underlying Eagle Mills; 7 penetrated Paleozoic beds, while 9 ended in Hosston, 2 in Glen Rose, 2 in Paluxy and 4 in Gulf. Geology The wells listed in Table 2 either resulted in the discovery of new oil pools or, because of their depth or location, afforded impor-tant stratigraphic or structural informa-tion. Fig. I is a general columnar and stratigraphic section showing the relation-ship of the strata within the Comanche series. The nomenclature shown was ac-cepted by the Shreveport Geological Society. It was subsequently published by Imlay,l who indicated probable correlations with other areas and presented evidence for the possible Jurassic age of the under-lying Cotton Valley and Smackover formations. New Fields Pouke.—On June 10, 1940, the Louark Producing Co. completed its No. I Sturgis, sec. I, T. 17 S., R. 27 W., in central Miller County, producing between 3583 and 3607 ft. in the upper part of the Paluxy forma-tion. The well flowed I00 bbl. of 3r.4' gravity oil per day through Ns-in. tubing choke. This discovery resulted from seismograph work. Six other wells were drilled in the area, none of which found production in the original sand. One of these wells is producing from a sand 50 ft. deeper in the section. The others were abandoned. No further development is in prospect. Production is from lenticular sands of the upper Paluxy; 45,556 bbl. had been pro-duced by the end of 1940. There is structural closure against a fault to the northwest. McKanzie.—The Atlantic Refining Com-pany's No. I Bodcaw Lumber Co., sec. 29, T. 17 S., R. 23 W., eastern central La-fayette County, was completed June 8, 1940, as the eighth and farthest west of the Smackover (Reynolds o6lite) limestone pools. The well flowed 10 bbl. an hour of 58.6' gravity distillate through an 1 1/64 Ma-in. tubing choke, with a gas-oil ratio of 8400:I.

The great Bingham Canyon mine and mill complex of Magna, Arthur, and Bonneville had their beginning in a 300 ton per day operation which was commenced by Daniel C. Jackling and his associates in 1904 as the Utah Copper Company. This small plant was quickly expanded to 500 tons per day and eventually Kennecott, the Utah Copper successor, was processing about 45,000 tons per day of ore in each of its mills, Magna and Arthur. Finally, in 1966, the Bonneville crushing and grinding plant was added to produce a slurry of ground ore for flotation concentration at the expanded Magna and Arthur mills. Bonneville is one of the few railroad dump primary gyratory crushing plants constructed in recent years; another which is described in this Monograph is Cuajone in Peru, started in 1976. Two others are the Climax Henderson unit and the Phelps Dodge Tyrone crusher, which has been fed by trucks since it commenced operation. The Bonneville, Henderson, and Cuajone crushers are all located considerable distances from their mines, hence the use of rail haulage. Shovels in the Bingham pit are 8 to 15 yd capacity; and ore is sent to the Bonneville crusher in 100 ton rail cars, where they are dumped, two at a time, by a hydraulically driven rotary dumper. Ahead of the 54 in. by 74 in. Allis-Chalmers gyratory are two grizzlies, each 27 ft 9 in. (8.46 m) long with bar spacings of 4 ½ in. (114 mm) at the feed end and 6 in. (152 mm) at the discharge end. Grizzlies are sloped at 38. Oversize rocks are re- moved from the crusher pocket by an overhead crane, and the crusher produces a nominal 6 in. (152 mm) product. Rail cars are dumped in the direction away from the crusher, and water sprays at the dumper level and in the rock boxes are used for dust suppression. There are two 72 in. by 19 ft (1.83 m by 5. 8 m) apron feeders under the 500 st cr'ushed ore pocket and two more under the grizzly undersize pocket. Feeder speeds are variable up to 72 fpm. Grizzly undersize is dropped to the feeder pocket by three shelves forming a rock ladder attached to the pocket walls. Each pair of apron feeders, one for crushed ore and one for grizzly undersize, discharge to a 72 in. (1. 83 m) picking belt for tramp removal; this belt feeds one of two 54 in. (1.37 m) feeder conveyors which in turn discharge to a 60 in. (1. 52 m) takeaway belt operating at 175-300 fpm (53.3 - 97.4 mpm). Both picking belts are equipped with metal detectors and tramp iron magnets, and a separate 30 in. (760 mm) conveyor is used to remove tramp material.

Review of difficulties experienced in drilling directional wells in the offshore Grand Isle Block 43 field showed most failures of drill pipe, drill collars and casing to have been associated with excessive dog-legs. Alleviation of difficulties was approached by synthesizing theoretical and practical concepts in a planned dog-leg control program. Preventive measures necessary to control dog-leg severity and corrective measures used to reduce unacceptable doglegs are discussed. When other measures fail, deliberative measures as outlined can be employed after the probable cumulative fatigue damage to be sustained by the drill pipe has been determined. Results of a program successful in virtually eliminating problems stemming from excessive dog-legs indicate that control of dog-leg severity in directional wells is feasible and will cause no decrease in the over-all drilling rate. INTRODUCTION Prompted by an increasing frequency of drill pipe, drill collar and casing failures, a study of 50 directional wells representing 592,000 ft of hole, including 444,000 ft of deviated hole, drilled in the offshore Grand Isle Block 43 field was conducted in early 1965. A number of drill pipe washouts and six keyseating problems were recorded and a detailed review was made of 16 failures which had required fishing effort in 10 of the 50 directional wells drilled prior to June, 1965. These problem wells are exemplified by Wells G and F for which pertinent data are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Data pertaining to all of the 16 failures are summarized in Table 1. Inspection of these data shows most of the problems to have been associated with dog-legs in excess of theoretical limits suggested by Lubinski' and excessive dog-legging is indicated to have been concomitant with whipstocking in several of the problem wells. Results of the investigation agreed with those reported by Schenck2 who had concluded that problems could be expected when dog-leg severity exceeded limits proposed by Lubinski. Since Schenck had demonstrated the desirability and feasibility of drilling directional wells without excessive dog-legging, a dog-leg control program was established in June, 1965 for wells drilled in the Grand Isle Block 43 field. This paper reviews the methods by which theoretical and practical concepts were synthesized to develop a program of preventive, corrective and deliberative measures which virtually eliminated problems stemming from excessive dog-legs in directional wells. Placer dredging as we know it today, especially gold dredging, is an industry about 40 years old, dating from the beginning of this century, when a few mining men in California saw the possibilities in adapting earlier dredging methods to California placer fields in and immediately adjacent to streams. At first it was thought that dredges must be operated in existing stream beds, but experience soon pointed the way to dredging alluvial deposits of old stream beds, operating on landlocked dredging ponds. Within the first five or six years of modern dredging, experience was gained so rapidly that dredges to dig 60 ft. below water level were *designed and built. This depth was believed by many operators to be the maximum at which successful dredging could be carried on. Alluvial deposits of gold, suitable for dredging, were readily handled by equipment available and developed early in the industry's history. Much of the gravel was easily dug and if deposits were cemented, contained large boulders, or for some other reason could not be handled by a dredge, the ground was abandoned in favor of other deposits that could be handled easily. Many failures, adversely affecting the dredging industry, resulted from attempts at that time to extend the scope of placer dredging with equipment not suited to the formation being dredged. Dredging ground suited to early equipment was exhausted eventually, but many supposedly undredgeable alluvial fields containing gold in commercial quantities were found and became known to dredgemen. Improved equipment was needed to work deposits known to exist at great depths or associated with unusual obstructions. Operating companies looked to dredge manufacturers and metallurgists, particularly manganese-steel foundries, for improved designs and materials. Experience developed in California has spread throughout the world, and dredges of improved types have been adapted to the mining of platinum and tin as well as gold. Space will not permit a description of all the improvements in dredging since the early days, but a few of the recent developments are worthy of note, because they make possible the dredging of placer deposits of great depth, those having hard, irregular bedrock or containing large boulders in great quantities, and compacted or cemented gravel deposits. Deep Dredging At Hammonton, calif., yuba consolidated Gold Fields has, within= the past two years, built its dredge No. 20. The company has operated continuously in that field since 1904, digging successively at maximum depths of 60 ft., 80 ft., 112 ft., and now 124 ft. below water level. The first dredges were equipped with buckets of 6 and 7½-cu. ft. capacity; six dredges operating in the field today have 18-cu. ft. buckets, digging now 65 to 124 ft. below water level. Boiler-Room Economy "Establishing and Maintaining Boiler-room Economy" is the title of a paper presented before the Ohio Society of Mechanical Electrical and Steam Engineers by Geo. H. Gibson, of which the following is an excerpt: Boiler-room economy depends less upon equipment than upon operation, i.e., it depends largely upon the condition in which the apparatus is maintained and how it is used. A given boiler may operate this week with an efficiency of 78 per cent., and next week with an efficiency of 65 per cent., while using the same fuel and developing the same rating. If there are variations ii; character of fuel and in load and other factors, the falling-off may be even greater, possibly to less than 60 per cent. The steam produced may cost twice as much per 1,000 lb. at one time as at another. Most steam plant managers know from their own experience that these statements are not exaggerated. It does not take much of a plant to run up a coal bill of $5,000 per year, many "spend $10,000 for coal, and fuel bills of $50,000, $100,000, or $200,000 per annum are not uncommon. As it call be shown in the majority of these plants that 10 per cent. of this amount may be saved, and in large numbers of them 25 per cent., while in some the expenditure can be cut in half, there is no disputing that we have here a subject worthy of attention. In the production of steam the greatest variable is the human factor. Before we can pass judgment, however, we must first have standards. This implies accurate quantitative knowledge of fuel consumption and steam production. We must measure the output and know how much the steam costs per thousand pounds, and how many pounds of steam are obtained from a pound of coal. We can then begin to analyze the problem, and find where and how methods and conditions can be improved, and how much. Many favor buying coal on a B. t. u. basis. This is advisable where the amount purchased warrants the considerable expense involved in systematically gathering samples that: are. truly representative and in having analyses made, of every carload. Coal analyses, combined with. an honest endeavor on the part of the miner to ship good coal, should insure the receipt of the heat units paid for. , It often happens, however, that the coal which is cheapest on a B.t.u. basis is not the cheapest or most suitable for producing steam, because of peculiarities of the plant in which it is to be burned, or conversely, the fuel which furnishes cheap B.t.u. may require special methods or equipment for its economic utilization.

It is a well-known fact that magnesium-alloy castings are apt to be coarse grained if the melt is not superheated several hundred degrees above the melting point before casting. (The casting temperature varies according to the shape of the mold. A typical casting temperature is perhaps 1400°F.) British practice is to heat to 900°C. (1650°F.) for 15 min., cool rapidly to casting temperature, and cast.' In Germany superheating is carried out at 850' to 900°C. (1560° to I650°F.) depending on the amount of scrap used. It is stated that further refinement will be obtained by prolonging the period of superheating or by increasing the superheat temperature to 950°C. (I740°F.).2 In the United States superheating is carried out at 1600' to 1700°F. (871' to 927°C.), perhaps even higher in some places. It is stated that superheating effects are found as low as 1500°F. (816°C.), but several hours are required.3 These commercial treatments lead to grain sizes in sand castings that may vary from 4 to 8 grains per sq. mm.! in heavy sections and from 60 to IOO in 1/2-in. sections to perhaps 380 in thin sections. It is also generally known that the refining effect of superheating is lost if the melt is held for some time at lower temperatures before casting. Aside from these very qualitative statements, there is little to be found in the literature as to the effect of temperature and time of superheat on the final grain size. Because of the uncertainty of these factors, the Office of Production Research and Development of the War Production Board placed a research contract with the University of California, supervised by the War Metallurgy Committee. This research, which was done under the "Restricted" Project NRC-550, is the basis of this paper, which has been released for publication by the O.P.R.D. The material studied was an alloy prepared from carbothermic magnesium. The temperatures required for grain refinement proved to be widely different from those used in practice, as described in the statements in the first paragraph. This difference is attributed to the fact that the magnesium in the specimens was of carbothermic origin instead of the electrolytic magnesium in common use. Materials and Methods The magnesium alloy studied was one of the most popular sand-casting alloys, with a nominal composition of 9 Per cent aluminum, 2 per cent zinc, and 0.1 per cent (minimum) manganese and the balance magnesium. The paper describes the use of the Electric Pilot in the Permian Basin for making permeability surveys of wells and for the selective acidization of wells. A general summary of the information obtained from the many permeability surveys run in this area is given, and the possible application of this information to reservoir control problems is discussed. The application of the Electric Pilot on specific wells, involving well completion, acidizing and workover operations is also included. Introduction The Electric pilot is a comparatively new tool in oil-producing areas. From the beginning, the possibilities of this new service caught the imagination of many of the oil operators and acidizing engineers. Through the continued and ever increasing use of the pilot during the past year, and the close cooperation of the oil operators who have used this service, the efficiency and utility of the Electric Pilot service has been increased to a point where it is now a well established and recognized service. There are two major uses for the Electric Pilot: (I) permeability survey; (2) selective acid treatments. Permeability surveys are made to determine the thickness of the various permeable sections at the borehole, the vertical position of these zones at the bore hole, and the relative capacities of the various zones. Nomenclature Data obtained from the permeability survey are used to calculate three different indexes that pertain to the volume of fluid injected into the various permeable zones. A nomenclature for these various indexes has been set up, which correspond with the various productivity indexes, except that they are a measure of injected fluid rather than produced fluid. The nomenclature and definition of the indexes used in connection with a permeability survey by the Electric Pilot are as follows: 1. Capacity.—The volume of water injected into an individual permeable zone, in gallons Per minute. 2. Capacity Index.—The volume of water injected into an individual permeable Zone, in gallons Per minute Per pound Per Square inch differential Pressure. 3. Specific Capacity Index.—The volume of water injected into an individual permable zone in gallons Per minute Per pound per square inch differential per foot of thickness of the zone at the borehole. ROLE OF GASES IN FERROUS -METALLURGICAL PROCESSES IN every process for making steel there are one or more stages where the metal is exposed to gas of one kind or another. Thus, in the open-hearth furnace, the carbon dioxide and water vapor in the products of combustion are oxidizing toward the ferrous and manganous oxides in the slag, tending to convert these to higher oxides; the higher oxides then oxidize the steel, so that indirectly the products of combustion are oxidizing toward the steel. In the Bessemer process, there is direct contact of air and steel; also, the water vapor in the air blown into the converter is continually decomposed by the molten steel, yielding hydrogen and ferrous oxide, both of which are in part taken up by the metal. In the electric-furnace processes, there is always more or less air in contact with the slag covering the metal, and this air and the gaseous reaction products from it are dissolved in the slag to some extent and thus transmitted in part to the steel. In the crucible processes, there is always entrapped air in the charges and the crucibles are more or less permeable to the gaseous products of combustion from the furnace. In all the processes of manufacture, the molten metal is exposed to air while tapping into ladles and ingot molds and has an opportunity to saturate itself with air or with gaseous or solid products generated by chemical reactions between air and steel. Sieverts1 has shown that molten metals require but a few seconds to saturate themselves with a surrounding gas. No one familiar with the operations at a steel plant needs to be reminded of the important role that gases play at all stages. Tars paper reviews the industrial trends and changes in educational concepts that have led to the development of the modern petroleum engineering curriculum. A trend toward emphasis on engineering fundamentals is noted. While most universities are committed to the traditional four-year engineering program, it is agreed that more than four years is necessary for academic preparation of the petroleum engineer in all phases of his profession. The author proposes a coordinated program of undergraduate and graduate training that will permit of adherence to the general pattern of the present four-year engineering course, with provision for extension of the program into specialized graduate courses of professional character. In the latter, emphasis may vary with the interests and objectives of the individual student. A specific undergraduate curriculum is proposed in which upward of 80 per cent of the available time is devoted to engineering fundamentals. A broad survey of the professional field is afforded in courses grouped in the third and fourth undergraduate years, but detailed treatment of the professional aspects of petroleum engineering is reserved for the graduate program. INTRODUCTION Of necessity, engineering curricula must ever be changing to reflect the new techniques, the changing concepts that are presented as the engineering industries develop and unfold. Particularly is this true of the younger engineering curricula representing comparatively new and rapidly changing industries such as the petroleum industry. Institutions that planned their petroleum engineering curricula a decade or two ago now find that the petroleum industry has become vastly more technical in its requirements. En¬tirely new methods and techniques have come into vogue and must be given place in the curriculum, and some of these are of a character that demands changing emphasis in the fundamental preparatory subjects. College and university faculties cannot complacently assume that curricula in this field that were considered appropriate 10 or 20 years ago still reflect the needs of the industry that they are designed to serve. If they do, their graduates will be poorly equipped to meet the requirements imposed upon them by a rapidly changing industry. Perhaps it is not too much to expect academic authorities to anticipate the trends of industry and equip their graduates with what they will need to attain leadership 10 or 20 years after graduation. Whether or not this desirable objective is possible, there is no excuse for allowing curricula to fall behind the current needs of industry. DURATION OF CURRICULUM The majority of our engineering schools and colleges still adhere to the four-year curricula and there appears to be a definite sentiment among many engineers engaged in industry that work should be so planned that the engineering student may secure the essential academic preparation for his profession in a terminal four-year program. The accompanying map, which does not claim to be more than a careful sketch, is based on the position of a few mines obtained from Mr. F. Lewis, at Calico, and the plats in the Land Office with the patented claims. Only a few claims are shown by their boundary lines: as usual in mining districts, there is an enormous number of them, often conflicting or overlapping, the correct mapping of which would be useless for the present purpose. The rest of the topography and the drainage are mapped from sketches, aided by compass and aneroid. The elevations are taken from Daggett as base, the altitude of this station being determined by the railroad to be 2000 feet.] Until a few years ago the product of silver in California was of little importance, compared with that of gold, and often fell short of $1,000,000, the only noteworthy counties being Mono, Inyo and San Bernardino. The lattice parameters of zirconium and zirconium-oxygen solid solutions (hcp) were determined from measurements of back-reflection X-ray photograms obtained at 29°C using a symmetrical focussing camera. The following linear equations between parameters (c,a) in angstrom units (10-8 cm) and atom ratio (m) of oxygen to zirconium were obtained: c = 5.14764 + 0.2077m a =3.23168 + 0.1099m. The linear equations given are valid over the range 0 to 5 at. Pct 0. The accuracy of individual parameter measurements approaches the limiting accuracy determined by the spectral broadening of the incident characteristic radiation, and exceeds the accuracy of previously reported values. THE present work was undertaken in order to determine the lattice parameters of zirconium-oxygen solid solutions with an accuracy that allows quantitative determination of oxygen in zirconium. The results indicate that this is possible if very careful measurements are made, since the parameter change is only a few hundredths of a percent per at. pct 0.1, 2 In the present investigation the desired accuracy was achieved with large-grained samples using a back-reflection focussing camera and maintaining good temperature control during exposure. In addition a digital computer was used for calculation of the parameters by means of an analytical extrapolation.37 Suitable diffraction photograms were obtained from large-grained samples by using a modification of the technique described by Graf and Monteil.5 This consists of simultaneous rotation and oscillation of the specimen about two mutually perpendicular axes during exposure. Whereas, normally the upper limit of grain size is about 50 µ for useable diffraction photograms, this technique allows extending the upper limit of grain-size to exposure of a single crystal. EXPERIMENTAL Preparation of Alloys for X-ray Diffraction—Zir-conium, designated as hafnium-free, Westinghouse "Grade 1," was swaged from l/2-in.-diam crystal bar to 3/8-in.-diam rods. Substantially all of the hydrogen was removed from the zirconium by annealing at 1200°C in a high dynamic vacuum. The rods were then swaged to 0.2 in. diam without intermediate annealing, and 2 in. lengths were cut for alloying with oxygen. Samples for chemical analysis were taken from portions of the rods between each 2 in. length. Chemical analysis of the dehydroge-nated zirconium is given in Table I. Commercial tank oxygen (99.5 pct 0) was condensed in a liquid nitrogen-cooled trap, and part of the condensate was slowly reevaporated into 5-liter storage flasks. Nitrogen remained as a reactive impurity, and the calculated maximum increase in nitrogen content after a 5 at. pct 0 addition to zirconium was 50 ppm by weight. However, chemical analyses of several of the prepared alloys indicated that the maximum increase in nitrogen content was 10 ppm. The storage flasks, a Sieverts-type gas burette and manometer, and associated traps, pumps, and pressure gauges were connected through a glass high-vacuum manifold to comprise the gas addition system. This investigation was undertaken to determine the quality of different iron blast-furnace slags as desulfurizing agents, and the possibility of using, in the blast furnace, materials of higher sulfur content than is now common. The solution of the problem would render possible the use of higher sulfur iron ores for pig iron and cokes containing more sulfur than now employed, and the economic manufacture of irons and steels of lower sulfur content. It is generally assumed that the sulfur that reaches the lower part of the iron blast furnace is removed from the pig iron by combining with lime to form calcium sulfide. Most of the sulfur introduced with the charge is in combination with iron or manganese or, perhaps in the coke, as a carbon compound.1 The iron and manganese sulfides are more soluble in the iron than is calcium sulfide, and as the latter is generally said to to be more soluble in the slag than the iron and manganese sulfides, this greater solubility of calcium sulfide in the slag tends to free the metal from sulfur. This greater solubility of the calcium sulfide is used not only to reduce the sulfur contents of the pig iron in the blast furnace, but by this means also low-sulfur steels are produced in the open-hearth and electric furnaces. The reaction2 FeS + CaO + CO = Fe + CaS + CO2 requires a high temperature and strongly reducing conditions in the presence of lime. During the past ten or twelve years, the average reader of newspaper and magazine articles has been led to believe that enormous deposits of high-grade coal exist in the northland and that these can be mined for practically nothing. But much of the reputed glitter and attractiveness of Alaskan coals disappears when viewed at close range. Many areas of coal-bearing rocks are widely distributed geographically from Cape Lisburne, on Bering Sea, to Admiralty Island, south of Juneau. Bituminous coal is found at Cape Lisburne, on the Bering Sea, at Five Finger Rapids on the upper Yukon, and at Herendeen Bay and Chignik Bay; lignite is found on the Kobuck River, along the Yukon River from points near the mouth to Tonakat, near Rampart, at Dawson, on the east shore of Cook Inlet, and in the Tanana Valley, 50 mi. south of Nenana. The Susitna and Matanuska Valleys contain coal ranging from lignite to anthracite, and in the Bering Lake district, there are coals ranging from semi-bituminous to anthracite. No effort will be made to describe all of these fields, but the writer will confine himself to the four principal fields, namely, the Nenana field! in the interior of Alaska, tributary to the Fairbanks district; the Matanuska field, in the Matanuska Valley; the Kachemak Bay field on the east shore of Cook Inlet; and the Bering River field, east of the mouth of Copper River. Nenana Coal Field The Nenana field occupies an area east of the Nenana River 70 mi. (112 km.) southwest of Fairbanks and approximately 50 mi, from the town of Nenana, which is located at the junction of the Alaskan Railway and the Tanana River. It is on the northern flank of the Alaskan Range and occurs within the foothills of that district. The elevations range from 1000 to 4000 ft. (304 to 1219 m.). Future developments may prove the field to extend from a considerable distance west of the Nenana River to the headwaters of the Tanana River. The coal measures are of Tertiary age and are probably Eocene. They are not badly deformed by folding, but portions of the field show
