TO determine the optimum inside dimension of an airshaft, it is necessary to strike the proper balance between the cost of power for air friction and turbulence losses within the airshaft, on the one hand, and the cost of sinking the airshaft, on the other. An airshaft larger than necessary is extravagant because the increased amortization rate exceeds the reduction in power cost. Conversely, an airshaft smaller than is needed wastes more power than can be justified by the corresponding reduction in amortization rate. The airshaft power is a function of the air volume Q cu. ft. per min. and the air-pressure drop p in. water gauge across the airshaft. † The airshaft pressure drop is calculated by the formula: R X l X O X Q2 P= 5-2 X A3 wherein R is the air-friction coefficient for the portion of the airshaft 1 ft. deep, 0 ft. in perimeter and A sq. ft. in area, when passing an air volume of Q cu. ft. per minute. The self-potential or spontaneous polarization method is one of the oldest in the field of electrical exploration. When applied in prospecting for ore bodies, it is one of the most rapid and inexpensive means of locating indications of ore bodies at shallow depth. Usually, the procedure is to survey the equipotential lines of the electrical field that is generated by the electrochemical activity of the ore near the ground-water level, and to localize the so-called negative centers or points of greatest negative anomaly. Another field procedure involves the measurement of potential differences along potential profiles, generally laid out at right angles to the assumed strike. Again, in such survey, the basis for establishing the presence of ore is the location of negative potential anomalies. The earlier writers on the subject, notably Schlumbergerl and R. C. Wells,2 did much to clarify the fundamental electrochemical phenomena involved. Interpretation of the field data, however, remained largely qualitative. In 1925, A. Petrovsky3 analyzed the relation between the shape of the potential anomaly curve and size and depth of an Ore body by assuming the subsurface body to be a polarized sphere.' Along similar lines of approach, Edge and Laby5 considered the ore body a dipping sheet with limited extent in the direction of strike, while Poldini6 based the theory on the assumption of a dipping bar. The following study endeavors to enlarge upon these earlier investigations and attempts, on the basis of the potential distribution of a polarized bar, to indicate certain characteristics of the anomaly curve that make possible the determination of depth, size and dip of a subsurface body. The Spontaneous Polarization Field Set Up by an Ore Body If a sulphide ore body is subjected to oxidation varying in degree in its upper and lower parts according to the difference in the concentration of oxygen within the surrounding medium, an electrical potential field is set up. The form and distribution of this field will be investigated herein with special reference to its components on the earth,s surface. Under the simplifying assumption that the ore body may be considered as a dipole with the point sources Q1 and Q2 situated at its upper and lower ends (Fig. I), the potential of the spontaneous polarization at point P is given by the following equation:

The chemical reaction occurring in collection of nonmetallic minerals with amine-type collectors was early postulated by students of flotation phenomena to be metathesis between the mineral and the collector, involving exchange between the amine-bearing (aminium) ion and the cation of the mineral, and formation at the mineral surface of an oriented film of the amine salt of the mineral anion. Qualitative evidence of exchange has been obtained on several occasions at Columbia. Thus 1000 C.C. of a solution containing 495 mg of laurylamine hydrochloride was shaken 17 min. with 100 grams of barite and ground in a porcelain mill to pass a 200-mesh screen; the mixture was then set aside for 48 hr. Filtrate therefrom analyzed 476 mg. per liter of laurylamine hydrochloride. There was no substantial loss of chloride ion (78.4 mg. per liter in the original; 74 in the filtrate). No successful analyses were concluded for barium ion. Earlier, confessedly rough work with scheelite indicated a solution gain in Ca++ equivalent to about one-half the aminium ion lost. Real quantitative roof of the exchange, in the form of an established stoichiometric balance, is unknown to the authors. The data of the present paper, however, obtained from experiments designed on the basis of the exchange hypothesis, constitute strong evidence of its truth, and at the same time point the way to economic utilization of the expensive nitrogen-bearing collectors in concentration of the low-priced nonmetallic minerals. The basic postulate underlying the experiments performed was that, if the collecting reaction is of the type R+ + Y- + MX = RX + M+ + Y- where R = aminium ion, Y = the anion of the amine salt, and M and X are, respectively, the cation and anion of the mineral, the reaction should obey qualitatively the implications of the mass-action and solubility-product laws. This is to say that coating and collection should be aided by the addition to the solution of either ion (R+ or X-) of the collector-coating compound, and hindered by the addition of either of the ions M+ or y-. Experimental work comprised determination of (,) the relative solubilities of the laurylammonium salts of a variety of nonmetallic-mineral anions; and (21 the contact angles' of various minerals in solutions containing different concentrations of the postulated controlling ions. A plausrsle method of drilling beyond the continental shelves is set forth with limitations of the method. The continental shelves comprise the water-covered portions of land masses out to 600 ft. of water, or roo fathoms. The problems and possibilities of drilling beyond this depth are discussed in this paper. Introduction Much attention is being given the problem of developing petroleum beneath the open sea. Geophysical surveys have been made 26 miles offshore1 from the continental United States, and onco offshore ownership is established it is likely that there will be drilling for oil on the continental shelves. More than two years ago the author presented the means for drilling in deep water.2 at the fall meeting of the Petroleum Division of the AIME at Los Angeles. His concepts then were based on the use of rigid foundations suitable for drilling in water up to 600 ft. deep. The present paper suggests a method for drilling in deeper water. Possibilities and Problems of Drilling beyond the continental shelves It being conceded that because restricted deep-water portions of the hydrosphere might contain oil in commercial quantities, and that at any rate it is pertinent to know more of the nature of the lithosphere beneath the hydrosphere, the possibilities and problems of drilling beyond the continental shelves should be set forth. Drilling in open water would offer few if any advantages over drilling on land. These are: 1. The ocean transportation is available to deep-water drilling sites, and extensive pipe lines and roads are unnecessary. 2. Refinery facilities and markets perhaps are established on the near-by shore where adjacent fields on land are nearing depletion. 3. There is freedom from jungle pests and tropical diseases. 4. Competitive drilling is less likely. 5. Extensive areas attractive for development arc not yet under lease or concession. Disadvantages are great and numerous: 1. Storm hazards from wind and wave. 2. Expensive foundations, either rigid or floating. 3. Shutdown times because of weather. 4. Marine Regulations of Federal Bureaus in addition to customary regulations on land. 5. Frequent difficulty in moving men and materials to and from drilling platforms. 6. Extra precautions required in open sea. For drilling in water more than 500 or 600 ft. deep, rigid foundations2 become too costly, and floating foundations must be used, and they must meet the following requirements:

The McGill smelter started operations in the year 1907. The smelter furnaces were fired with run-of-mine coal on grates until April 1911, when oil firing was introduced. Oil firing continued until April 1918, when the initial coal-pulverizing plant was started.' Early Pulverizing Plant Various alterations were made to that plant during its operation, one of the more important being in connection with the system for delivering pulverized coal. In order to minimize coal-dust explosions and fires, the return portion of the main delivery line was eliminated in the year 1928. Thereafter coal-dust explosions and fires were greatly reduced. Pulverized coal was prepared at this plant primarily for the reverberatory furnaces, but for several years it was also delivered to the converting plant, roasters and power-plant boilers by a system of auxiliary fans and delivery lines. During the period March 29 to April 8, 1929, one reverberatory furnace was fired with pulverized coal produced by an Aero, type J, unit coal pulverizer with a rated capacity of 5 tons per hour. This machine actually pulverized its rated capacity but the product was too coarse. After certain regulations, a her product was obtained but the pulverizer capacity decreased and this resulted in insufficient coal for efficient furnace operation. Table I gives a comparison of the average screen analyses of the pulverized-coal products from the impact-type unit pulverizer and the regular coal-plant installation. It was definitely proved that this size and type of unit pulverizer could not furnish sufficient coal of proper fineness to give smelting results comparable to that obtained with the regular coal-pulverizing plant. The coal from this unit pulverizer was so coarse that it did not ignite or burn properly and thus did not produce the proper heat for efficient smelting. During the latter part of 1929 and the early part of 1930, experimental work was conducted with a 7-ft. o-in. by 48-in. Hardinge conical ball-mill coal-grinding unit, which was installed alongside a furnace in the reverberatory building. Results obtained from the test run indicated that this unit would furnish sufficient coal of proper fineness for good smelting.

Because of the necessity for taking regularly occurring open-flow tests in prorated high-pressure oil fields, much gas is turned to atmosphere by way of vertical vent lines leading away from the oil and gas separator. In the past, measurement of such gas has been accomplished by several methods, usually by use of the open-flow Pitot tube. The use of the closed-flow Pitot tube has been avoided apparently chiefly because the ordinary vent-line hook-up makes it necessary to apply the instrument closer to a bend, valve, or obstruction in the pipe than is recommended by rules of good practice. The many advantages that would result from the application of the closed-flow Pitot tube prompted investigation of the actual effect upon quantity rate of flow measurements computed from data obtained with the tube in a normal working position, which is closer to the tee at the base of the vent riser than is usually considered as giving highly accurate results. An effort Was first made to compare the results thus obtained to those under ideal conditions and at high velocities To make this comparison, knowledge of the characteristics of gas flowing at very high velocities is essential. Research for such information indicated that little or no work had been done that would give data necessary for such a comparison, therefore the problem was changed to a test designed to determine the relationship between quantity rates of flow as measured by an orifice meter and a Pitot tube placed at the center of a pipe eight diameters from a tee or ell at the base of a vent riser, through which gas is flowing under low pressures at very high velocities. To determine this relationship, a series of tests was run on a number of 8-in. iron-pipe vent riser., in which the Pitot tube data were taken at the position as stated above. Gas from a wet-gas gathering system was passed through an orifice meter setting and thence to atmosphere by way of the vents. Data were taken simultaneously from the orifice meter and Pitot tube from which computations for comparisons were made. The actual method of comparison is discussed later in this paper. The time is no longer when a man can act as an independent unit; the appreciation of the interdependence of one man upon another has emphasized the importance of the social unit. Epidemics have made us recognize that even a man's health is not distinctly his own to control as he pleases. The physical examination of workmen previous to employment started with an effort to prevent the spread of tuberculosis, for tuberculosis may be detected in its early stages and cured. But it was soon found that many other diseases were detected and the saving of lives made possible. The physical examination does not mean the elimination of the unfit—on that basis it would utterly fail—but rather the measuring of a man's physical fitness and placing the man where he can do the best for himself, his fellow worker, and the company. Industry as a whole cannot expect to live up to the standard of physical examination set for the army, nor should it expect to do so, for in all branches of industry there are types of work that do not require the same amount of endurance as does army work, and the lacing of men with physical limitations in the work for which they are capable permits a higher average of physical fitness for the work requiring physical excellence. Objects of Physical Examination The objects of physical examination are: The early detection of illness, particularly at a time when a full restoration of health is possible; the protection of employees from infection caused by working in contact with contagious diseases; the discovery of a man's physical limitations, in so far as his possibility for rendering good service is concerned; assistance to the safety movement by eliminating association in hazardous occupations with men whose physical condition renders them likely to accident to themselves and others; and the lessening of time lost by sickness. Statistics issued by the United States Department of Labor show that 22.54 per cent. of idleness is caused by sickness, with an average number of 7.71 weeks idle; whereas only 1.66 per cent. is caused by acci-

IN presenting this paper to the Institute I beg to mention, first, the results which I have obtained and the apparatus which I have employed, and to follow this with a brief description of the steps by which I have perfected this process. My present mode of testing is as follows : I obtain, either from the furnace or from the finished product in any stage in which it may chance to be, a small test-piece, usually about 4 of an inch square by 3 1/2 inches in length. I place this test-piece upon the poles of an ordinary electro-magnet, for about one minute, and thus magnetize it to its extreme limit. I then place it upon an indicator (which I will shortly describe), on which indicator there is already placed a piece of steel of similar form which has been magnetized in the same manner, the percentage of carbon of this second piece being definitely known. I then, by means of a scale, which forms part of the indicator, marked in degrees of carbonization, read the exact percentage of carbon contained in the piece under examination. My apparatus consists of an ordinary electro-magnet, connected with a suitable battery of moderate power, by which I magnetize the pieces as before described, and of an indicator which consists of a magnetic needle suitably mounted or suspended, so that it is free to deviate a few degrees only from the zero point, and having a rest, which is used to check the vibrations when in use, and to support its weight when not in use. At a right angle to the natural position of the needle I have a scale about 3 feet long, the zero point of which coincides with the natural position of the needle. This scale is marked in each direction from the zero point in degrees of carbonization. The marking of the scale is in accordance with the following rule: Taking the carbonization of the steel as a basis, I maintain the same proportion between the squares of the distances on the scale as exists between the percentages of carbon in the steel, for instance, if .08 of

The generation and evaluation of solutions to body force problems is of extreme interest to the geotechnical profession, as all natural stress states must necessarily include some contribution from the weight of the material. In this chapter the elastic solution for the stress field around a circular, horizontal tunnel at an arbitrary depth beneath the surface of a half-space is reexamined. The influences of body force, initial stress, and free surface proximity are examined and related to in-situ cases. The solution as presented deals only with an isotropically elastic medium; this medium is further considered only in a half-space configuration. It is readily apparent that these restrictions impose severe limitations if analogies are attempted with in-situ cases where geologic discontinuities, inhomogeneities, and irregular boundaries exist. The question might be raised as to the propriety of geotechnically oriented researchers even considering such idealized conditions. There is, however, much to be gained from study of such solutions. The lack of geologic discontinuities and inhomogeneities allows the investigator to separate and leisurely examine such parameters as are included in the solution, without worry of interrelationships of a host of other parameters. Further, elastic solutions have had extensive usage prior to the development of such techniques as the finite-element solution. It is interesting to compare body force solutions with the external field solutions which in the past have been used for design purposes. Finally, the exact solution may be used to verify the accuracy of the finite-element type of solution. The mathematical solution on which this chapter is based was originally developed by R. D. Mindlin.l Because of the complexity and length of the solution, no attempt was made to determine the resultant stress fields until the advent of the present-day high-speed digital computer. How-

GEOTECHNICAL OBJECTIVES OF UCG PROGRAM Underground coal gasification (UCG) is one of several in situ extraction technologies for utilizing deep, otherwise unmineable coal. This technology involves the injection of air or oxygen into the target coal seam, ignition of the coal and recovery of product gases. Geotechnical characteristics of the coal and enclosing rock strata strongly influence the success of this Process. The flame front follows the coal cleats (Hill, 1979), and cleating and bedding control the manner in which coal collapses into the cavity, thereby affecting recovery efficiency (Ramirez and others, 1982). Moreover, coal seams typically behave as fracture dominated aquifers in which cleat orientations govern subsequent contaminant dispersal. For these reasons, the Anaconda Minerals Co. undertook a detailed study of fracturing within the Wyodak-Anderson Coal in the eastern Powder River Basin (PRB) near its Rocky Hill UCG test site (Fig. 1). STRESS HISTORY AND FRACTURING IN THE POWDER RIVER BASIN Vertical jointing, or cleating, in coals may arise from shrinkage shortly after deposition under low confining pressures, or later in time, soon after burial but after the coalification process is well advanced (Ting, 1977). There is much evidence to support the formation of cleating after coalification (e.g. Hawkes and Mellor, 1970; McCulloch and others, 1974), which suggests that the stress state existing at that time strongly influences cleat formation. McCulloch and others (1974) argue that the typically better developed face cleat forms parallel to the plane containing [ol] and [o2]. Where the relation between cleats and stess has been studied (McCulloch and others, 1974; Stone and Snoeberger, 1977; Ward, 1977; Kulander and Dean, 1978), the highly systematic face cleat strongly parallels the [o1] direction. Stone and Snoeberger (1977) report face and butt cleat measurements of N70E and N29W for the Felix Coals 220 m stratigraphically above the Wyodak at the Hoe Creek UCG site (Fig. 1). Structural trends also indicate the past state of stress in the PRB. Glaze and Keller (1963) suggest that the NE-SW regional compression during the late Permian formed major N-S fold lines and basement magnetic anomalies. Mapel (1959) describes folds having N60W and N30W rends in the northern PRB, as well as a large normal fault trending northeast. Glass (1976) also describes normal faults trending northeast. LAST fall, having a number of ore samples from mine-development work carried on in spite of the "Revolution," I was forced to do my own assaying again, after a lapse of many years. This gave me an opportunity to build a furnace for crucible assaying, using wood for fuel, along lines which had been developing in my mind since the time 20 years ago, when as general factotum at a little mining camp in western Chihuahua, Mexico, I had converted a crucible charcoal furnace into one using the reverberatory principle. Wood-burning furnaces have been described in technical literature, but I believe the present application will prove helpful to those of the profession who are working in out-of-the-way places. The furnace is shown in detail in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. Remembering the trouble caused by stoking my first charcoal furnace too heavily, I fired this one with but a few sticks of wood at a time. By this method I could run out a charge of 12 crucibles in 30 to 35 min., using 50 sticks of ordinary stove wood. Later I fill up the firebox, holding about 40 sticks, get everything ready, put the crucibles into the melting chamber and "fire up." Just as soon as the fire is well started the draft door is closed and the furnace allowed to heat up slowly for 5 min. Then the draft is opened (the door to the ash-pit) and the fire allowed to roar, which it does. In 20 min. from the time the fire is lighted the fire door is opened, the fire stirred along the grates, and 5 or 6 more sticks of wood thrown in. In 25 min. from the start, the draft is closed again, the cover of the melting chamber pushed back and the charges poured. The melts will be found to be perfect, and the crucibles to pour absolutely clean, if everything has gone right, as will usually be the case. A new charge may be put in, and fired with S to 10 sticks of wood at a tine, and be ready to pour within 20 min.; but it is just as well to leave the crucibles in the melting chamber a full 2.5 min. By using 10 sticks of wood to start the fire and adding 5 sticks as often as needed, which will be as soon as the last sticks fed in are in perfect combustion, the smelting can be completed in from 30 to 35 min., using from 35 to 40 sticks of wood. I consider this to be the best method of stoking.

Discussion of the paper of DORSEY A. LYON and ROBERT M. KEENEY, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1707 to 1730. LAWRENCE ADDICKS, Douglas, Ariz.-I think papers of this character, while general in, nature, are of particular value and interest, because when we figure on competing with the East in electrometallurgical industries, on account of the cheap power on the Pacific Coast, we have to take two or three things into account. In the first place, power very rarely amounts to more than 20 per cent. of the total cost of an operation, even .though it be electrometallurgical, and I think it is the common opinion among those who are not familiar with those particular industries, that it amounts to more than 50 or 60 per cent. Take copper refining; we may say that it is 15 per cent. of the total cost. In the second place, around New York City, with 100 per cent. load factor and a reasonably large load, say 10,000 kw., we can generate from a certain class of coal 1 kw.-hr. for about 0.3c. I might say, however, that 0.3c. does not include overhead charges, interest on the investment, etc. The third factor we have to consider out here is that any product to be salable, must command a retail market. It would be useless to produce wire bars here on the Pacific Coast because there is no place to roll them. If we were going to establish a copper refinery, that part of its output which goes into wire bars would have to be taken care of by building a rolling mill alongside of it to turn it into wire and finally make a product that is salable. I do not think, however, that Mr. Lyon need have excluded copper refining from his industries. There are perhaps 50,000,000 lb. of copper a month refined in this country on a custom basis. I think the smelting companies would be very glad to build refineries here if conditions warranted it. The recent extensions of the Great Falls refinery and of the Tacoma refinery in the last few months give evidence of that.

FLOTATION has been so closely allied with the sulfide minerals and their early and associated oily reagents that the term "oil flotation" has erroneously been applied to the entire flotation process. Today, the term "chemical flotation" might be used to advantage. Flotation literature has dealt primarily with the removal of sulfides. from non-sulfide gangues, and the separation of one sulfide from another.. Now, the application of the process to the separation of nonsulfide minerals is coming to the fore; and from the standpoint of the number of commercial minerals involved, the flotation of nonsulfides offers the larger field. Here, soap or soap-forming substances, such as the fatty acids and their derivatives, are used; hence there may well be a subdivision of the chemical flotation process called "soap flotation." Early experimenters learned that it was easy to form a froth or foam that would carry a part or all of the ore charge over the lip of the flotation machine; but this could not be regarded as flotation because of the lack of selectivity. Doubtless soap was one of the first reagents tried, and doubtless it was rejected on account of its gangue-carrying properties. Now this same gangue-carrying ability makes soap an acceptable reagent, for we are dealing with that, which among sulfides, is considered "gangue." As in the flotation of sulfides, so in the flotation of nonsulfides, the selective flocculation of the mineral and the dispersion of the gangue are the first objectives. In fact, these two phenomena epitomize flotation. They depend upon the unlike surface properties of the respective minerals; and, as long as the components of an ore have unlike surface properties, a separation is possible, at least in theory. Often in nonsulfide flotation it makes little difference which mineral floats and which is depressed; generally only a separation is sought.

MR. Theodore D. Rand has made some interesting observations on the serpentines of Chester and Delaware counties, Penna., in which he suggests that the outcrops of this rock are detached from each other, and that while a comparatively narrow belt, running nearly east and west, mill include them all, the strike of each outcrop differs considerably from the direction of this narrow belt; and that it results that these isolated exposures exist on the map, as it were, in echelon, the easternmost end of each lying northwest of the western extremity of its neighbor. As he elsewhere remarks, this is important, if established, and the writer spent a day or two recently on the ground in the study of this phenomenon. One thing would seem to follow from such a state of facts, viz., that this serpentine at least must have been of secondary origin, for it is difficult to conceive of a rock which occurs intercalated in numerous horizons of a different formation, and agreeing with the latter in bedding, unless the former were an altered product of the latter. It is true that one might account for it by the supposition of an original unconformable deposit, which had been broken by a number of faults and distorted by throws to the northwest; but this hypothesis would do violence to the observed facts relating to the measures along with which the serpentine occurs, and in which no such distortion has been observed. * Thus for determining, by evaporative test, the calorific power of a coal, the ultimate constitution of which is known, it is requisite, that, besides the quantity of coal consumed and the weight of the water evaporated, the temperature and chemical composition of the escaping gases, or gaseous residue, shall be quantitatively determined, the same as solid residues of ash and unconsumed fuel. In observance of such requirements, the Heizversuchstation of Munich has been in operation since 1879. This consists of a permanent boiler plant, constructed on the principle of the calorimeter, with special provision for avoiding errors from loss of heat—snch, namely, as arise from radiation and conduction, and from the varying proportions of water in steam.—Muck. The "New Austrian Tunneling Method" is one of the most significant developments in European tunneling in the last 15 years. I hope this report will show the significance of this tunneling method, which was developed in Austria exactly 18 years ago and which is now used in many European countries. In Austria from 1948 to 1953, the Moll tunnel with a length of 11.6 km (about 7.3 miles) was constructed as a part of the Kaprun power plant. Depth of overburden varied from 1000 to 1400 m, and there were many rock bursts in calcareous-schist formations. Here for the first time it was found that a thin concrete lining would help to prevent rock bursts if it was sprayed on the rock soon after blasting. During construction of the Prutz-Imst tunnel in Austria from 1953 to 1956, the shotcrete lining was sprayed on the phyllite surface a certain distance behind the blasting face to prevent rapid rock decomposition. This method was also tried in soft-rock sections of the tunnel where steel and wood supports usually were necessary. To prevent loosening of the rock, application of the sprayed concrete was tried immediately after blasting. This method made it possible to tunnel through very soft ground. Where necessary, the shotcrete was supplemented by steel arches and mesh reinforcement. At that time (1953-1956), the machines and equipment for guniting or spraying concrete were being improved rapidly and it became possible to spray aggregates up to 25 mm in diam. Hardening accelerators brought quicker strength and better adhesion of the shotcrete-this also made it possible to use the method in wet tunnels. If the tunnels are extremely wet or flowing with water, it is necessary to seal off the wet rock or drain the water, using, for instance, the Oberhasli method. After these first successful steps with the new Austrian method, large portions of the Schwarzach power plant in Austria were designed and built. At this operation, shotcrete was used almost exclusively for tunneling work. It was on this site where, for the first time, a tunnel 120 m long with a 45-sq- m section was driven through overburden without one piece of timber

THE mineral trona was discovered on Government land in 1938, about 18 miles west of the town of Green River, Wyo., in the core of the John Hay, Jr., well, a test well drilled for oil by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co. in sec. 2, T. 18 N., R. 110 W., sixth principal meridian. Although no oil or gas was reported, the drilling led to a discovery of great potential economic importance and exceptional scientific interest. Trona is a relatively rare mineral found at various places in playa deposits but not previously found at any great depth. It is composed of hydrous sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate (Na2CO3.NaHCO3.2H20). Pure trona contains the equivalent of 70.35 per cent of sodium carbonate. Total sodium computed to carbonate times 1.42 equals the percentage of trona in the absence of other sodium carbonate minerals in the sample. ANALYSES Two short pieces of core sent to the author a few days after the completion of the Hay well were analyzed by R. C. Wells[t] and found to be exceptionally pure trona. A brief article on this discovery has already been published.1 Arrangements were then made through W. T. Nightengale[$] for the author to inspect and sample the core. The company log of the well included notations of sodium salt crystals from a depth of 1190 to 1820 ft. Not being able to identify all the minerals present, the author selected several specimens of the core for petrographic examinations and sampled the sections of trona for analysis. J. J. Fahey, of the Geological Survey, examined the specimens and reported most of the crystals to be a new anhydrous sodium carbonate and calcium carbonate mineral (Na2CO3.2CaCO3), which he named shortite,2 after Maxwell N. Short.* He analyzed the samples of trona, with the results shown in Table I. [ ] In addition to the 10 ft. I in. of trona in the first section, it is reasonable to assume that the 9 ft. 8 in. for which no core was available for sampling is either mostly trona or some other soluble salt, but it should not be included in calculating reserves. In the part of the core between 1590 ft. 3 in. and I600 ft. 4 in. the material insoluble in cold water, amounting to about 5 per cent, was estimated petrographically to contain 70 per cent clay, 25 per cent shortite, and 5 per cent pyrite. The D'Arcy Exploration Company Ltd. has been granted prospecting licenses in Great Britain to explore four different types of prospect. In the south of England (Dorset, Hampshire and Sussex) the objective lies in Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous beds. In an area of approximately 4470 sq. miles, covering parts of Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, the search is directed to testing Carboniferous rocks. In northeastern Yorkshire a single license covers structures in which the Permian limestone will be explored. In Scotland, southeast of Edinburgh, the company holds another single license where Lower Carboniferous horizons are the objective. Southern England Among the more important "indications" that led D'Arcy Explora-tion Company Ltd. to undertake a testing program in southern England was the discovery of sands in the Wealden (Lower Cretaceous) series of Dorset, impregnated with oil residues. Traces of oil and bitumen were also found in limestones of the Portland and Purbeck beds of the same area. In addition, traces of petroleum had been recorded from Upper and Lower Jurassic beds in borings, more especially those drilled in the course of coal exploration in Kent and Sussex, and an outcropping oil sand was known to occur in Wealden beds near Pevensey in Sussex. Besides these tangible proofs that at least some oil has been generated in this area, _the Jurassic beds, as developed at outcrop in Dorset and elsewhere, include considerable thicknesses of strata that may well be considered as possible source rocks of petroleum. A regional view suggested that these possible source rocks extended, without great thinning, beneath at least the southerly parts of the Weald of Sussex, the South Downs and still farther south beneath the English Channel. It appeared, and still appears, a reasonable conclusion that, where suitable structural conditions occur in this tract of country, an oil accumulation of commercial value may be found. Of the several possible anticlinal structures, those at Portsdown (Hampshire) and between Henfield and Steyning (Sussex) were selected as sites for the first test wells. Over a long period of time considerable attention has been paid to the chemical properties of the materials entering the iron blast-furnace charge. Infinite care has been used in the selection of materials having the correct chemical composition. Little attention has been paid to the physical properties of either the ore, coke or limestone. Until comparatively recent times the coke as produced, as well as the ore, was charged into the furnace without any attempt to maintain uniformity in physical size. Recently some work has been done along the lines of sizing of coke and in some cases the sizing of ore has been applied. In each instance marked results in the efficiency of operation have been attained. The effect of changing the physical size of the materials entering the burden has been reflected directly in the coke consumption. From the experience of operators and the results of numerous investigations which have been conducted on blast-furnace materials, it may be stated definitely that the physical properties of the materials entering the charge have as much bearing on the efficiency of the process as the chemical properties of these materials. Structure of Sinter On the Continent and more recently in this country iron-ore sinter has been introduced in blast-furnace burdens. The effect of the use of sinter has resulted in a material reduction in the coke consumption and an increase in the capacity of the furnace. The effect of the use of sinter is due undoubtedly to its porosity and to its physical size and, incidentally, to the chemical condition of the iron in the sinter and to the absence of combined water. Compared with Mesabi ores, all sinters are generally larger in size than the ore particles, and the structure of the sinter differs considerably from the structure of the ore. In sinter the mass is porous and open and makes available a great deal of surface for gas contact during the process of reduction. Most ores are relatively dense and nonporous and when the particle size is large the time element required for reduction is materially increased. COAL-mine opera- tors face a difficul- ty in notifying men when there is no work. If the miners come to the shaft when there is no work, they must be paid, by agreement, two hours' wages. This involves a considerable loss since it is not uncommon to em- ploy two or three hun- dred men or more at a single shaft. Many mines have solved the problem by using an electric siren. This carries the "no work" message to all of the miners within a ra- dius of from one and one- half to two miles, so they do not trudge uselessly to work and the operator saves the two-hours wage payment. At the Valley Smokeless Coal Co., Johns- town, Pa., such a siren serves as a start and quit- work signal for three mines which previously re¬ quired three individual signal systems. Similar units are used by the Old Ben Coal Corp. mines, Dolly's Smokeless Coal Co., Rhonda Coal Co., Bird Coal Co., and hundreds of others. Many other applications of the electric siren have been found in mines. They are used on underground locomotives, to awaken miners in the morning, to tell them it is time to come to work, to sound the start and quit-work signal, and to warn of fire or accident. The sirens are most generally used to give a start and quit-work signal, fire, and general emergency alarms as well as no-work signals. They require 3 and 5 hp. to operate. The smaller unit has a sound radius of from three-quarters to one mile, while the larger siren can be heard over a distance of from one and one-half to two miles. The 5-hp. unit has been heard for as great a distance as 14 miles, and 10 miles is not at all uncommon. One of the outstanding features of the 3 and 5-hp. units, which is uncommon in the smaller sirens is that they may be adapted to sound code signals. When used to sound a fire or general emergency alarm the siren may tell at the same time where the fire or acci-dent is. When a remote control device is used with a siren it is possible to operate the siren from any number of distant points. Any number of "start" buttons may be placed at various places. By using one "start and stop" button where the remote control is mounted, and one or more "start" buttons at various places about the plant, it is necessary to run only two wires to the various "start" buttons. If "start" and "stop" buttons are used altogether, then three wires must be run.
