With the workable area of coal prospected and known as to workability and quantity and sampled and tested for desired quality comes the determination of the projection and method of working. The best method will be the one supplying the greatest degree of safety, the most merchantable product, the minimum average cost per ton with the largest yield of recoverable coal. Based on coal elevations, taken at the bottom of the seam on all known outcrop exposures, prospect openings or drill holes, coal contours are made on the map to be used in developing the mining plan. The contour interval should be as close as available information will permit. For general utility in layout of mining, haulage, drainage and ventilation, a map scale of 400 ft. per in. is preferable. In mountainous sections, location of the main out- crop opening or hoisting shaft is often limited by the available railroad route and amount of land level enough for a plant site. In level country, where a tipple and hoisting shaft may be placed at will, choice of the plant site should depend on the minimum average underground haul for the total coal to be worked to the new

THE aluminum oxide known as corundum has several varieties that have been used as gem materials since ancient times. These include the red variety called ruby, the blue variety sapphire, and the asteriated types of ruby and sapphire. Asteriated sapphire was known to the ancients under the name of astrios, and descriptions of this gem were given by Pliny and other early writers. The relation of these gem materials to each other as varieties of a single species, corundum, was first clearly established by Haüy in 1805 and J. M. Güthe1 in 1809. Natural gem corundum is obtained principally in Ceylon, Siam, Burma, India, and Australia. Star sapphires and rubies always have been highly prized and in recent years have become particularly popular in the United States. Natural star rubies of large size and fine quality are extremely rare and rank with large and fine emeralds and diamonds as the most valuable of gem stones. Interest thus attaches to the recent success in commercially synthesizing star sapphires and rubies of a size and perfection unmatched by nature.

The pH control system at Kennecott Copper Corporation's Nevada Mines Division concentrator consists of two independent systems, lime dilution and lime addition. Lime dilution is accomplished in a mixing tank where slaked lime and water are introduced proportionately. The desired dilution of the milk of lime is determined by the electrical inputs provided by eight pH probes, one per grinding section. The inputs are averaged and applied to a time base generator. The summation output of the time base generator determines the proportion of lime and water that are to be mixed and applies this input to a voltage sensitive switching device. The switching device provides a signal to one of two relays which will add either slaked lime or water, dependent upon the summation output. The entire cycle is based on a 2-min repetition rate to allow for sufficient mix time. Responsivity is controlled by maintaing a limited maximum solution level in the mix tank. Lime addition is controlled independently within each grinding section. The electrical input from the pH probe in a given section controls the solenoid valves which provide lime to each of the ball mills. The valves remain open within a time range capable of maintaining the pH of flotation feed at a given set point.

The rheological properties of aqueous solutions of several commercial flocculants were investigated using a rotating coaxial cylinder viscometer. Similarities between the pH-apparent viscosity relationship and the flocculating properties of the reagents are discussed here. Synthetic neutral polymers and polyelectrolytes are used extensively as flocculants in mining and chemical engineering operations. The action of these reagents has been interpreted as adsorption of the polymer flocculant to the mineral surface, followed by the formation of physical polymer bridges between the particles.4,5 A consequence of the bridging model is that the efficiency of a polymer flocculant depends on the degree with which the polymer is adsorbed to the mineral surface, and the extent to which the polymer molecule forms a bridge between colliding particles. The length of the polymer molecule and its orientation at the mineral surface are important in the bridging mechanism since the further the polymer segments can protrude from the mineral surface the greater the probability may be of these segments contacting another mineral particle. Linke and Booth7 have shown that, for a silica suspension, both the settling rate at a given polymer addition and the maximum settling rate obtainable increase with increasing molecular weight. THE inorganic non-metallic minerals, that is, the non-metallics exclusive of coal, oil, gas and related minerals, constitute the basic raw materials for a number of essential industries. It is estimated that the value of the raw materials in this group produced in 1919, together with certain of the primary products ordinarily manufactured at the mine, exceeded $800,000,000. They are employed chiefly in the building, agricultural, and chemical industries. It has been estimated, by the Bureau of Mines, that approximately 00,000,000 worth of non-metallic minerals and their products were used in the building trades during 1918; with the great increase in building since that date and the increased cost of materials, the value of non-metals used in such industries during 1920 probably exceeded $500,000,000. The chief of these materials are cement, building stone, crushed stone, sand and gravel, clay products, lime, gypsum, glass materials, slate, talc and soapstone. In many of the producing industries of this great group, the waste is so great that the expense of handling it is an important item in the production cost. The utilization of waste is receiving unusual attention in many of the non-metallic industries at present. The most obvious advantages of such utilization are: (1) Conservation of mineral resources, (2) the removal of waste heaps that in many places obstruct development, (3) manufacture of new and useful products, (4) reduced production costs through elimination of a large part of the item of waste-disposal expense. In many industries there is keen competition between producers of various products used for the same purpose, so that advantage will accrue to the manufacturer who is able to reduce his production costs.

All ore reserve estimates are based on some system for assigning an area of influence to each drill hole. Commonly used methods of calculation are the polygonal, triangular, statistical analysis, and cross-sectional. Each of these methods is based on different volumetric considerations and the weighting of grade with tonnage varies with each method. Because the characteristics of each mineral deposit are different, a preliminary survey of these characteristics should be made for each individual deposit to determine which method or methods should be used. In this project the several methods were not only compared with one another, but also against actual production records. Basic data was derived from a mined out portion of the Silver Bell pit near Tucson, Ariz. All calculation was carried out on a digital computer, and the first step was development of computer programs which would yield the desired information. The second step was the coding of input data into punched card form. Cost and speed of computer operation were measured, and these results are given with the computer program summaries on page 38.

THE eastern section of the Park City dis-trict is drained to an elevation of 6300 ft. by means of the Ontario drain tunnel owned and maintained by Park Utah Consolidated Mines Co. This elevation represents a depth of 920 ft. in Park City Consolidated Mines Company's property. When development below the goo-ft. level was commenced, sinking was at-tempted through an incline winze in the fissure. The intensely fractured quartzite forming the walls of the vein could not be held after water was encountered, so it was decided that further sinking should be done in a vertical winze far enough in the foot-wall to be in the more solid quartzite out-side the fractured zone containing the vein. Progress was good until a depth of 200 ft. below water table was reached, where the flow of water became serious. Sinking pro-gressed 300 ft., to the 1200-ft. level, and there approximately 750 gal. of water per minute was being pumped. The last 20 ft, of sinking cost more than $200 per foot direct charges, whereas the over-all cost for the 300 ft. was $100 per foot. This high last cost was caused by excessive lost time in pumping. Crosscutting to the vein disclosed the fact that the 1050-ft. level had been devel-oped only after drainage had been effected from the 1200-ft. level, but that the 1200-ft. level could not be opened because of the

WHEN a hole is made in a stressed solid, such as rock pierced by mine openings, equilibrium of the solid is destroyed. To re-establish that equilibrium the stress condition in the rock surrounding the opening becomes rearranged. This rearrangement may or may not develop local stresses in the vicinity of the opening which exceed the elastic strength of the rock. Since stability of the opening depends, therefore, on the strength of the naturally occurring rock surrounding the opening, this rock is an engineering material of construction, and all rock affected by the associated opening or system of open- ings may be considered a structure. The term invert is chosen to describe the formation of the structure —built from the inside, as it were, and a consequence of mining rather than an entity built for a purpose. By definition, an invert structure is formed when openings are made underground and is composed of that material on the solid side of a rock-air interface wherein the stress condition is affected by the associated opening or system of openings. The shape of an invert structure is never clearly defined; the skin of the structure may be mapped, and even described, but the boundary of the structure within the solid rock mass must be arbitrarily set. The name geomechanics is proposed to describe a branch of scientific knowledge which will encompass principles and working hypotheses for behavior and design of invert structures. While this device is not new in its inception, its peculiar advantages failed to be of practical utility until furnace-builders instituted the mechanical reform of supporting the upper and lower water-jackets by hanging them from an I-beam frame, independently upheld by iron columns, instead of resting the entire weight of structure on the bottom, as practice formerly prescribed. The Colorado Iron Works were among the first to build copper-furnaces of this description, and the device, illustrated herewith, has been installed by them in three recent plants,—two furnaces for the Westinghouse interests near Ely, Vermont, and one for the Grand Prize Copper Company, of Gila county, Arizona. The jack-screw supports (Figs. 1 and 2) and the familiar iron bottom of former practice are retained as integral parts of this new furnace-bottom. And, instead of resting inert on the tapfloor of the furnace-room, the jack-screws are supported on and bolted to two I-beams the length of the furnace, placed immediately beneath, and parallel to, its sides. These I-beams are bolted to, and supported by, three steel axles equipped with small flanged wheels, the whole constituting a carriage, which runs freely on a track. The entire apparatus is movable or rigid at will, for the wheels are easily braced, if the tension of the tightened jack-screws does not serve to hold the whole in position. The advantages of this design will be at once apparent to those who have had practical experience in barring furnaces provided with stationary iron bottoms. It is a well-known fact that the larger part of the time occupied in cleaning and preparing a frozen furnace for active service is necessitated by working in a confined place where the temperature is uncomfortable, and that in such case the débris must be removed from

While working upon the processes which have been descaribed from time to time in the Transactions of the Institute for the estimation of these elements, I discovered that certain reactions take place under certain conditions which if overlooked, give erroneous results. Some of these reactions are new, to me at least. Estimation of Manganese. A weighed sample is dissolved in nitric acid and the manganese precipitated by potassium chlorate in the usual manner, care being taken to add some strong nitric acid at the last, and boil, to completely destroy the chlorate. Filter through purified asbestos, suck the filter dry with an aspirator; then wash with HNO3(1.40sp). gr.) until the acid comes through clear, and again suck dry with the aspirator. The nitric acid used for washing must be free from nitrous acid, for this acid reduces the peroxide of manganese; the lower oxide thus formed is dissolved by the strong nitric acid and is carried through the filter; some manganese also will nearly always be dissolved if the precipitate is washed with water. In view of the current interest in magnetic materials having rectangular hysteresis loops, as for example those obtained with the grain oriented 50 nickel 50 iron alloys,t we wish to call attention again to the results obtainable with the perminvar (Co-Ni-Fe) alloys heat treated in a magnetic field. Data taken from direct current measurements made prior to and during World War II give the typical values shown below for two of the perrninvar alloys. Fig 1 and 2 show- the hysteresis loops for these samples. The first sample above consisted of small rings punched from 0.014 in. sheet stock. These rings were heat treated at 1000°C for one hour in a hydrogen atmosphere and then cooled with the furnace to 750°C at which point they were subjected to a magnetic field of 15 oersteds maintained during cooling to room telmperature. The molybdenum perminvar sample consisted of a spirally wound core of 0.001 in. tape. The heat treatment was the same except that box annealing methods were used and no hydrogen atmosphere was employed. Even better properties might be expected using hydrogen. The heat treating temperatures and cooling rates are not critical. Rectangular hysteresis loops produced in other perminvar alloys by heat treatment in a magnetic field were described earlier.',? Properties similar to those described above are realized in perminvars manufactured by conventional methods. Drastic cold working which in practice limits the final thickness and is gen- erally expensive may thus be avoided. This information may be of interest to those concerned with magnetic alloys and the development of contact rectifiers, magnetic amplifiers and so on.

TRANSIENT potentials obtained in resistivity prospecting can be separated into two classes. The first is electromagnetic, has a comparatively short time constant, and increases in relative amplitude as the electrode separation is increased. These electromagnetic transient potentials, of which an excellent theoretical treatment is given by Yost: are the result of changes in the current and can be classed as differentiated signals. The second class is electrochemical, has a comparatively long time constant, and decreases in relative amplitude as the electrode separation is increased. The electrochemical signals are generated by the current flow itself and can be classed as integrated signals. The transient potentials due to electrochemical factors are the subject of this article. The phenomenon is referred to as induced polarization. Schlumberger" was the first worker to observe induced polarization, but he was unsuccessful in attempts to apply the principles of induced polarization in electrochemical prospecting. Other workers, notably Bleil; have studied polarization and in some cases pointed out its possibilities, but no theory has been presented that describes polarization and its time dependence adequately. It is the purpose of this discussion to present the essence of a theory to geo-physicists and to show that it leads to results consistent with experimental evidence. The theory on which this analysis is based has existed in electrochemical circles since 1910."

Recent experimental data on the methane-n-butane-water system have been combined with data in literature to present: (I) the water-vapor content of natural gases, (2) the solubility of water in hydrocarbon liquids, and (3) the solubility of natural gases in water. Since water is present in petroleum reservoirs, experimental data regarding the behavior of water in hydrocarbon-water systems is of increasing engineering importance. A survey of literature (Table I) shows that data of these types are fragmen-tary at temperatures above the hydrate region. Experimental data taken from the authors' recent investigation of the meth-ape-n-butane-water system are presented.17

Resource and coal quality estimates of three coal deposits in the Western United States were estimated by kriging, a geostatistical method that yields unbiased estimates with maximum achievable precision. Derived geostatistical models were used in kriging to estimate the tonnages of the deposits and to derive contour maps of thickness, structure, and sulfur content. Where data were available on quarter-mile spacing, kriging was used to obtain detailed information applicable to mine planning and design. Where data were sparse, kriging was used to do a preliminary evaluation of total resources. Geologic studies were required to correlate the individual coal beds and to identify complicating conditions such as the presence of faults, burnt zones, channels, and regional changes in thickness and elevation. Where these conditions were identified, they were explicitly integrated into the estimation procedure.

The design of storage space or deep mining in rock salt should take into account not only time dependency of the rock salt behavior but also temperature effects. For deep mining of potassium salt the natural increase of temperature with depth may no longer be negligible. For the storage of cryogenic liquid gas in salt caverns more knowledge is nezded about the propagation of deep temperatures and their effects on the stress-strain-creep behavior of the surrounding salt. High temperature problems arise for nuclear waste storages in caverns or drill holes emitting radiation. A numerical model is proposed for the analysis of displacements and stresses including their time and temperature induced change. For the material behavior of salt constitutive equations are chosen composed of a combination of Hooke-Kelvin-Bingham-Newton-model based on experimental results (excluding at present deep cooling), Langer 1980. The parameters involved are depending on the stress level and the temperature. The finite-element-method is applied to rotationally symmetrical three-dimensional problems. The non-linear calculation method is based on an implicit method with respect to time. A modified Newton-Raphson-method and the initial strain approach are employed. Along with some experiences on suitable numerical procedures, examples are shown for the characteristical effects of time-temperature dependency. Having achieved convergency and reliability a method is now available for practical design and parametric sensibility studies.

That the single charging-bell, properly proportioned, is a good all-around device for distributing material in a blast-furnace can scarcely be questioned; yet it is equally true that, in some cases, it has not given perfect satisfaction; as has been demonstrated by the substitution of double bells, at furnaces under the beat management—generally in cases where anthracite, either alone, or with a portion of coke, was used as fuel. The defect of the single bell seems to be that it does not permit, beyond very narrow limits, such changes in charging as may be required by the temporary conditioil of the furnace. Modern furnaces using Connellsville or other good coke and Lake Superior ores seem to be well served with a single bell. At least, up to a certain size, somewhere about 18 by 85 ft. to 19 by 90 feet, these furnaces make low-silicon pig-iron with about 1,800 lb. of fuel, or in some cases very much less. The following instances occur to me, in which other forms of charging-apparatus have been employed with advantage: 1. The validity of the concept of mine resistance in ventilation systems is examined. Mine resistance is the proportionality constant relating the head generated by a fan and the quantity flowing through it when the fan is connected to a mine circuit. It is the total effect of all branches in the mine ventilation circuit. Its importance lies in the fact that for new mine projections, and in the extensions of existing mines, ventilation calculations are usually based upon adjustments of the mine resistance. In ventilation circuits with regulation, and/or with multi-fans, simple adjustments of the mine resistance curve do not lead to correct solution. A ventilation system consists of several interconnected subsystems where one subsystem behavior affects that of the others, and the total system. Through a series of simple but realistic examples, the authors demonstrate the importance of the systems concept in mine ventilation, and its practical application to coal mine ventilation planning. Starting from an initial system with no leakage and one fan, more complex ventilation networks with several leakages, sections and fans, are analyzed to show that ventilation system design on the basis of total systems approach is the correct procedure.

A GLANCE at the list of papers1 that have been published since 1920 on the general subject of flotation suggests the variety of ideas that exist regarding the underlying cause of the phenomenon. Among these ideas, we find several coherent theories, but none that adequately and completely explain the phenomenon. Ralston2 and Bains3 suggested an electrical theory which has to do with the attachment of mineral particles to a bubble by the attraction of unlike electrical charges. This theory has its root in the fact that a bubble of air in pure water is electrified in such a way that the surface is negatively charged while the body of the water is positively charged. This result, which was first discussed by Helmholtz, also obtains when the water contains anything except a high concentration of hydrogen ions, or ions which are trivalent or tetravalent. The theory also holds that the mineral particles have positive charges on their surfaces, and so there is attachment between bubble surface and mineral particles by the old law of electrostatics, which states that unlike charges attract.

Effects of heavy metal ions on the growth and the activities of iron and sulfur oxidation of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were investigated. Mercuric, silver, and stannous ions inhibited both of the growth and the iron- oxidizing enzyme system of the bacterium. On the other hand, uranyl ion inhibited the growth, but it gave almost no effect on the iron-oxidizing enzyme system. The inhibitory effect of uranyl sulfate on the growth of the bacterium is intensified on lowering the cultivating ' temperature from 28 ºC to 7 ºC. In the concentration of 10-3M, cadmium and copper ions inhibited colloidal sulfur-oxidizing activity of the cells 69 and 52 %, respectively, though they did not inhibit the iron-oxidizing activity at all in the concentration. On the contrary, stannous chloride did not givr any effect on the sulfur-oxidizing activity of the cells, though it inhibited the iron-oxidizing activity 55 % in the concentration of 10-3M. Several differences were observed among the cytochrome systems of cell-free extracts of the cells grown on iron and on sulfur.
