The main results from a programme of theoretical work on various aspects of the pelletizing operation are presented. This paper is primarily concerned with the modelling of: (i) The balling drum operation. A model is outlined which clearly demonstrates the characteristic surging behaviour of the balling circuit. It is used first in a control analysis and, subsequently, in the design and testing of various control schemes. (ii)The grate-kiln-cooler induration process. Models describing each of the constituent processes are outlined and a composite model of the whole induration process presented. The main results from each of these models are discussed.

Noranda Mines, of Quebec, signed a contract for construction of a $20 million copper refinery at Gaspe, P.Q. The plant is expected to have a 65500-ton daily capacity for both concentrator and smelter. Extensive drilling. around Gaspe has revealed more than 65 million tons of 1 to 2 pct copper in several deposits. Cerro de Pasco Corp. has called a special stockholders meeting for August 19 to obtain permission to engage in the oil and natural. gas business, in addition to its present production of zinc, lead, copper, silver and other metals. St. Joseph Lead Co. recently entered the oil development field. The United States, Canada and Great Britain have agreed to establish a permanent organization to work on unification of engineering standards. General accord has been reached on drafting standards and practices, screw threads, fittings for gas cylinders, and fits and tolerances. Permanent committees will study these fields. Reconstruction Finance Corn approved the largest sum in its history. for a mining enterprise when it loaned $94 million to San Manuel Copper. Corp., of Pinal County, Ariz. The loan will be used to increase production of copper and molybdenum, in what was described as-the biggest copper deposits in the country. Three large gold mining concerns operating in the Philippines told the Philippine Wage Board that they would be forced to close if they had to boost miners' wages 500 to $2 per day. The companies are Mindanao Mother Lodes, Benguet Consolidated, and Balatoc Mining Co.

The Automatic Extraction System (AES) was designed and built under a US Department of Energy Contract by the National Mine Service Co. in cooperation with the Lee Engineering Division of Consolidation Coal Co. The Pennsylvania State University, Mining Engineering Section, was contracted as an independent auditor of the AES performance. The AES had a rotating cutter drum like a continuous mining machine. But two hydraulically powered roof supports, four roof-bolting drills, a dust scrubber, a ventilation fan and ducting in the roof supports, semi-automatic control, an extensible chain conveyor, and other innovations led to the distinction "extraction system" as opposed to "miner-bolter" or continuous mining" machine. After design and assembly, the AES was field tested experimentally in an underground coal mine. The in-mine performance audit was preceded by a computer simulation of the potential production for a later comparison with the actual tonnage mined by the AES. This paper describes the results of an in-mine trial and assesses the production potential of the AES.

THE characteristics and uses of thermocouples of platinum and the platinum alloys being so well known, this paper will be confined to base-metal couples. During the past decade, there has developed a strong demand for thermocouples made of metals cheaper than the platinum alloys, and suitable for industrial heat measurements. Much research has been clone but only a very limited number of alloys have been found to possess the necessary characteristics for general technical use. In the development of thermocouple alloys it is necessary to consider the following points: The electromotive force and temperature relations; permanency or constancy; reproducibility; manufacturing difficulties; durability; and accuracy in use. The electromotive force developed by the thermocouple should increase with the rise of temperature according to some definite law. It is desirable that the electromotive force should vary directly with the temperature difference of its junctions, in other words, giving a curve linear or nearly so. It is also desirable that the resulting electromotive force be as large as possible for any given range of temperature, thereby insuring greater accuracy of readings.

Seismic velocity determinations over Precambrian outcrops near Flin Flon, Manitoba, indicate that several different rock types have sufficient velocity contrast to make reflection mapping possible. Stratigraphic and fault contacts between metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks have been mapped at some depth. A mu1ti-fold reflection survey attempted to trace the depth extension of an ore-bearing (Pb-Zn) rhyolite horizon within the metavolcanic rocks. A synthetic seismogram has been produced from a 10,000-ft sonic log and provides means of comparing seismic records with the local geology. From this the optimum frequency spectrum and the maximum resolution of the seismic signals were estimated.

The Panhandle area of northwest Texas embraces the northern portion of the Permian Basin of Texas as well as a considerable portion of the western part of the Anadarko Basin of Oklahoma. For the purpose of this report it will include in addition to the 20 counties of the Panhandle proper the two tiers of counties lying to the south, a total area of about 32,000 square miles. Crossing the Texas Panhandle diagonally from northwest to southeast is the Amarillo Arch, related to which is all of the production discovered to date. Oil Production Up to Jan. 1, 1930, the Panhandle has produced about 125,000,000 bbl. of oil. The peak yearly production occurred in 1927, during which period 49,000,000 bbl. were produced. In 1928 the production fell to 25,000,000 bbl., but in 1929, on account of important discoveries in Gray County, the total increased to 31,000,000 bbl. To date Hutchinson County has produced 64 per cent. of the total. Table 1 shows the total yearly production by counties. The present production of the Panhandle is 100,500 bbl. from 1745 wells or an average of 57.6 bbl. per well compared to a production on Jan. 1, 1929, of 59,748 bbl. from 1468 wells or an average of 40.7 bbl. per well. THE development of a cement that will resist the destructive action of sea water and other corrosive waters is a problem that has occupied cement chemists for the past one hundred years. It has been found that of the various salts that commonly occur in corrosive waters, sodium sulphate, magnesium sulphate and magnesium chloride are most destruc-tive to cement. Many investigations have been carried out in the United States, in Canada, and in Europe to solve the problem of what constitutes a sulphate-resistant cement, and during the past 10 years some of the findings give definite information in this respect. COMPOSITION OF CEMENT Portland cement is composed of four major compounds: 1. Tricalcium silicate 3CaO.Si02 (C3S) 2. Dicalcium silicate 2CaO.Si02 (C2S) 3. Tricalcium aluminate 3CaO.Al203 (C3A) 4. Tetracalcium aluminoferrite 4CaO.Al203.Fe203 (C4AF) The two calcium silicates are the main contributors of strength. The tricalcium aluminate contributes some to the early strength of the cement but has the least resistance of the four compounds toward the attack of sulphate waters. The tetracalcium aluminoferrite does not contribute very much to the strength, but is far more resistant to sulphate waters than the tricalcium aluminate. When hardened cement is exposed to water containing sodium or magnesium sulphates, these salts will react with the hydrated tricalcium aluminate in the cement and form compounds that will cause a swelling, disruption and crumbling of the hardened cement.

The President of the United States signed Public Law 91-173 on December 30, 1969 and the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 became law. The Bureau of Mines was required to promulgate regulations to implement the law. Unfortunately, some stipulations of the Act were not technologically possible. The USBM employed many new inspectors and had to instruct both old and new personnel in the requirements of the law. Mine operators and mine workers also had to be informed. There was a fair measure of inconsistency during this period. Progress is being made, however, and it is becoming easier for mining personnel to know what needs to be done. There are some unresolved questions, however, and there still appears to be an appreciable lack of uniformity in the application of the law by the many federal inspectors.

Our young, technically oriented people today are entranced by the space program, by physics that unlocks the secrets of nature, by electronics, and by other new technologies. The mining industry seems to be their last choice. Enrollment in mining schools is dropping and so is the interest of our great universities in mining curricula. The image of the mining industry appears to be one of being conservative, nonprogressive, resistant to change, and lacking in excitement and challenge. I submit that this public image is wrong. While the initial development of mines is usually slow and seemingly plodding, the problem of solving the imponderables of nature-the ore emplacement, its structure and physical characteristics, its response to recovery processes, and its probable ultimate profitability-is stimulating to the most acute and searching of minds and requires careful application of a combination of many technologies. The paths to obtaining the desired results must be within the bounds of reasonable expenditures in the early stage of development when risks are still high, and this financial discipline is a further stimulus to the imaginative search for the right answers.

Each spring most secondary schools select their best student science exhibits, prepared during the preceding academic year, and send them to regional "Science Fairs", which now number over 220. Winner-finalists of these regional contests are then sent to the annual National Science Fair, conducted by Science Service, a non- profit institution for the popularization of science, for final judging. (The Fair is now known as the "National Science Fair-International" because of participation by finalists from Japan, Thailand, Germany, France, Sweden and Canada.) For the first time since the Fair was started in 1950, AIME participated in the awards presentation. Held this year in Baltimore, Md., from May 5 to 9, five members of AIME's Washington, D.C., Section consented to represent the Institute as judges. They were: Marlin J. Ankeny-Director, Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior. Kenneth N. Weaver-Director, Maryland Department of Geology, Mines, and Water Resources. William Harper-American Petroleum Institute. Plate loading tests which use surficial loading of a rock mass are employed quite extensively for the determination of in situ deformability characteristics of rock masses. The cable jacking method is essentially a surficial plate load test in which the test load is provided by reaction against a cable anchored at some depth below the rock surface. The results of the test are usually evaluated within the framework of the classical theory of elasticity to generate estimates for the bulk deformability properties of the rock mass. In the conventional evaluation of this test it is assumed that the test plate is rigid and that the embedded anchor load has no influence on the test plate settlement. The purpose of this paper is to examine the possible influences of the plate flexibility and the anchor load location on the effective settlement of the test plate. The variational estimates presented in the paper are valid for moderately flexible test plates which are characterized by a relative rigidity parameter Numerical results are developed in the form of correction factors that should be applied to the cable jacking results to arrive at the deformability characteristics of the tested rock mass.

Discussion of the paper of Herbert F.. Miller, Jr., presented at the New York meeting, February, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 75, March, 1913, pp. 409 to 413. HENRY D. HIBBARD, Plainfield, N. J.:-Looking at the illustrations, it seems to me that a furnace made with the width of port that is shown here would not be a good working furnace. The economy of brick and gas might be all right, but I do not think it would melt the steel properly. I should say that the flame would not spread out suitably to fill the whole hearth of the furnace, and there would be undue waste, and it seems to me that it would be an undesirable furnace to adopt. The question as to whether a producer-gas flame would lie down in the furnace, hugging the bottom better than the natural-gas flame, is settled, not so much by the specific gravity of the gases themselves, as by the relative temperatures at which they enter the laboratory of the furnace. We know in that case that producer gas would be lighter than a natural gas which had not been run through a regenerator and expanded four or five volumes in consequence. I would like to hear what Mr. Miller has to say about the action of the flame spreading properly over the charge to give good metallurgical results in the form of furnace which he presents.

MUCH information concerning pegmatites which was thought to be true a few years ago has been proved false, and what is now actually known about some pegmatites is not true of many others. The erratic and seemingly unpredictable structure and variable composition of this class of mineral deposits has been widely emphasized. Even parts of the same pegmatite body exhibit marked differences in texture, mineral composition, width, and attitude. Constructive geological thinking in respect to pegmatites now aims to establish general laws rather than to stress the confusing diversity of features having no special economic significance.

Approximately 33% of the silver in the Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag ore of Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited is lost to the tailings and an additional 11% to the zinc concentrate for which no payment is received. 38% to 44% of this lost silver is carried by tetrahedrite, 28% by galena and 28% to 34% by a third silver carrier. The silver minerals acanthite and pyrargyrite have been identified in mill products and hence these are suggested as the principal third silver carrier(s) accounting for 13 to 20% of the silver in Brunswick ore. About 24% of this third silver carrier assemblage is lost to the zinc concentrate and 52% to concentrator tailings.

Imports from Mexico and South America It would not be surprising if, by 1930, we should actually welcome the imports from Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Argentina and Trinidad. T IME studies and cost accounting were combined to increase the efficiency of the overall mining method and thereby reduce costs at the Titania mine of the National Lead Co. in southern Norway about 70 miles southeast of Stavanger. From these studies a more effective drilling system was developed, standards were adopted for setting base pay rates, shrinkage stoping was abandoned for open stoping, a new mechanical loading chute was adopted, and the loading and haulage system was changed. Ore minerals at the Titania mine are ilmenite and magnetite; gangue minerals are plagioclase and hyperstene with accessory minerals of biotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and spinel. The average content of the ore is 17 pct TiO2 and from 20 to 25 pct iron. The ilmenite crystals contain microscopic lamels of hematite, making it impossible to obtain a high TiO2 content in the concentrate. (New York Meeting, February, 1913.) THE Tigre Mining Co. of Mexico, owned by the Lucky Tiger Combination Gold Mining Co. of Kansas City, decided early in 1910 to enlarge its mill, which consisted of a concentrator milling 3,000 tons of ore per month. The enlarged plant was designed to crush and concentrate 6,000 of ore and to cyanide 7,500 tons per mouth. The extra tonnage cyanided was to be obtained from tailings which were stored below the old mill. Power was supplied to the old mill from four boilers; a 150-h-p.. Corliss engine and two Weber 60-h-p. gas-engines using producer-gas made from charcoal. The total horse-power required, including 60 h-p. used for machine-drills in the mine, was approximately 275. Cord-wood cost $4.32 per cord, 8 by 4 by 3 ft., and charcoal $15 per ton. The fuel supply in the surrounding country was approaching exhaustion; more than 150 mules and 50 men were engaged in cutting and transporting this fuel, and the unsettled political, conditions in Sonora were such that it would be practically impossible to keep an organization of this kind together. The price of fuel was steadily rising and at times it became almost impossible to get sufficient fuel to operate.

The following resolution was prepared, by the War Minerals Committee and was submitted by it to the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, asking that it be passed by the Board and used to the best advantage to secure the end desired. WHEREAS, the steel industry of the United States is almost entirely dependent on the importation of foreign manganese ores, the consumption of which for the year 1918, it is estimated, will exceed 850,000 tons; and WHEREAS, the ships now engaged in transportation, especially from Brazil, are needed with ever increasing urgency for supplying our Army and Navy forces abroad; and WHEREAS, much shipping may be spared from manganese transportation and the domestic sources of manganese may be utilized, provided the steel manufacturers of the United States will cooperate to this end by taking advantage of the possibility, in open-hearth and Bessemer practice, of so called "residual" manganese, and by using spiegeleisen instead of ferromanganese, thereby following the example already set by three large and prominent steel producers; BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers urges the steel manufacturers of America, for patriotic reasons, to give immediate consideration to the development and utilization of domestic manganese ores; to use no ferromanganese, except for the manufacture of grades of steel below 0.15 per cent. carbon, to use domestic ores whenever possible in place of the high-grade imported ores; and to urge their associates and colleagues in this and other possible ways, to vie with one another in releasing ships for importation of any materials that cannot be secured or produced in this country.

I feel sure that the apparent anomolies between his findings and ours arise as a result of the different experimental methods used. The modem oxygen electrode method he used is sensitive to nano moles of oxygen uptake whereas the method we used was only sensitive to micro moles at best. Furthermore, our experimental method did not permit measurements to be made in the first ten to fifteen minutes of reaction, the very time he is observing. Direct comparison of his data to ours is made difficult because of not knowing the specific area of the samples he used. However, we found that precipitation of PbS using sodium sulphide gave rise to samples of area approximately 30 m2 g - 1. Noticing the rapid decline in oxidation rate over ten minutes, as reported in Table 1, one can conclude that we could not measure the rate after ten minutes using our method. Taking the above area I estimate that at these rates only a small fraction of surface would be oxidised in a period of hours. I can only conclude that at some point a change in oxidation mechanisms occurs giving rise to a much faster rate such as we observed. Finally, I would like to comment on the apparent inertness of the homogeneously precipitated lead sulphide sample 11. This method of preparation we found to give specific areas of 20 to 30 times less than other methods and this would account for the very low oxidation rate.

For a nation whose mining industry has generally been floating through history in the shadows of major mining developments elsewhere in the world, Australia has in the decade of the Sixties made a convincing bid to be one of the world's great "store- houses" of minerals. In fact, at the rate things are developing Down Under and Out Back, what with professional prospecting teams crisscrossing the continent under the direction of professional exploration management, Australia may one day find itself as the world's greatest storehouse. Whereas Necessity may be the Mother of Invention, Consumption is surely the Mother of Exploration. At least this is true in Australia of today. First, the forecasted shortage of iron ore in the world led to the fabulous discoveries in the Pilbara district of Western Australia. Now, the demand for nickel has generated even more interest among mining companies in the vast, untapped potential of Australia.
