It is the author's opinion, based on many field experiences over several years, that it is usually better to design a rougher flotation circuit with long rows of rougher cells for high tonnage capacity for maximum recovery and better operating efficiency than the alternative of a greater number of shorter rows with proportionately less tonnage of feed per row. Recent plant studies and tests in the 12,000 ton per day flotation plant of the Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corp., Cebu, P. I., have given further substantial support to this opinion. There are two flotation sections in this concentrator: 1) Section 1, treating half the tonnage to the total mill, has eight rows of rougher cells, each row containing 360 cu ft of cell volume. CARNEGIE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY On May 27, twenty-five of the leading representatives of the coal mining industry of Western Pennsylvania met with President A. A. Hamerschlag, of the Carnegie Institute of Technology, with a view to bringing about closer relations between the Institute and the mining interests. It was felt that the advice of the men in the field was necessary for the proper training of young men for mining work. A resolution adopted at this conference, among other things, called for a board of mine operators and engineers to serve in an advisory capacity with the Carnegie Institute of Technology. As a result of the counsel and recommendations of the Advisory Board, the Carnegie Institute of Technology, in cooperation with the U. S. Bureau of Mines, has recast its four year course in Mining Engineering and has also established a two-year course in Coal Mining. To carry out this new program, there has been organized the "Cooperative Department of Mining Engineering" in the Division of Science and Engineering of the Carnegie Institute of Technology.

Hazardous methane gas in coal mining is receiving increased attention due to the increased US demand for coal which has resulted in the exploitation of deeper seams and the utilization of more productive equipment. Problems posed by methane emission has the Mining Research Division of Continental Oil Co. (Conoco) accelerating efforts that began in the early 1950's with Consolidation Coal Co. (Consol).1 The program's focus is on finding new techniques for degasification of virgin areas as well as control of methane in gob areas.

IIT Research Institute has investigated the potential of high pressure water jets for rapid rock excavation. During this study, an attempt was made to correlate the extent of breakage effected to the mechanical properties of rocks. Six rock types were used in these experiments and nine properties were determined for each rock variety. A regression equation using the two most significant rock properties and one jet parameter (pressure) was established. Although tests were conducted to specific pressures of 35, no minimum in the specific energy consumption was noted.

The use in the iron blast-furnace of slags high in magnesia has been generally condemned, not only on the ground that magnesia renders the slag less fusible, but also because it is said to have less power to remove sulphur from the iron. Percy? says the use of dolomite as a flux should obviously he avoided, because magnesia " tends to induce infusibility," but says nothing of its relation to sulphur in the charge. Bell suggests the absorption of SO2, by lime and magnesia in the blast-furnace, but leads the reader to suppose that the really active agent is lime. Earnings of engineers in the period 1956 to 1958 continued the upward trend observed in the previous survey interval, 1953 to 1956. The overall median (all graduates) was $6500 in 1953, $7750 in 1956 (a 19 pct upstep or about 6.5 pct annually), and $8750 in 1958 (up 13 pct from 1956 or 6.5 pct average yearly). The latter represents an increase from mid-1956 to mid-1958. For this same two-year span the Consumer Price Index rose 1.5 pct and the Average Gross Weekly Earnings for Production (Manufacturing) climbed close to 10 pct. Median earnings for the major classifications studied are presented in Table I. The increase in engineering earnings are not distributed equally among the various activity classifications or among the experience levels of the survey. Summary results of the changes of the median lines for the major divisions are presented in Table 11. Data in this table are approximations- dollars are rounded to the nearest $50 unit and percentages to the nearest full percentage.

IN recognition of thirty-one years' service as professor of mining in McGill University the friends of Dr. Porter gave him a complimentary dinner at Montreal, on Jan. 24. The affair was appropriately held under the auspices of the Montreal Branch of the Canadian Insti-tute of Mining and Metallurgy, George C. Riley presid-ing, and was made the occasion of presentation to him of a Canadian landscape painted by Maurice Cullen, and of a silver plate to Mrs. Porter. Among those speaking were Messrs. George E. Cole, F. D. Adams, Sir Arthur Currie, W. C. McBride, and J. G. Ross. Mr. Cole spoke of the large part Professor, Porter had played in the development of mining in Canada through training the men who had become the leaders in the work. More than 200 mining engineers graduated from the University during Dr. Porter's tenure of office and while not all of them had continued to practise their profession, as a body they had had an immense influence.

THE CHAIRMAN (EDWIN LUDLOW, Lansford; Pa.).-Mr. Wang's paper reminded me that some years ago I was asked if I would not go into the Tien Tsin district and take charge of Americanizing a Chinese mine. They said the trouble was that, while wages were only 9 c. a day, the coke cost $2 a ton delivered to the cars. Reading Mr: Wang's paper would indicate the need of a little Americanization in the Manchurian field. Wages are only 40 c: a day, yet the cost is $3.60 a ton. An efficiency engineer would have an excellent opportunity in that field. T. T. READ, New York, N. Y.-It is always true that low-priced labor is inefficient, wherever we find it; for example, in Japan, where wages are low, but not so low as in Manchuria, working costs are not relatively much lower than ours. NUMEROUS ore deposits remain to be discovered. Many exposures of favorable host rock bodies within mineral provinces have not been adequately scrutinized geologically-the ore potential in buried portions of such rock bodies is enormous. Inasmuch as the more obvious deposits have been found, exploration has become more scientific and more expensive. Yet discovery continues to be very rewarding if exploration is intelligently approached. Although a number of exceptions can be cited, systematic geological exploration for ore on a significant scale has developed during the last two decades. So rapid has been the development of systematic exploration that a comparison of modern programs with those as recent as 1940, would suggest that many large mining companies and various Government agencies were hardly in the exploration business at that time. The technology involved in the Sherritt process for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from sulphide concentrates and mattes is presented in a manner which emphasises the chemistry of the process. The hydrometallurgical process takes advantage of the differing stabilities of the various oxy-acids of sulphur from thionates through thiosulphates to sulphate. Some separations are based upon stability differences, some upon kinetic differences and some upon valence state differences and similarities The engineering and economic factors involved in hydrometallurgy are not discussed in either detail or depth.

The basic aims of the drilling and blasting program at the Mission mine are fourfold: 1. To provide 100,000+ tpd of broken alluvium and rock material for shovel excavation; 2. To obtain fragmentation that will permit the most efficient digging of the broken material and provide an acceptable crusher feed; 3. To conduct the drilling and blasting program in accordance with approved safety procedures; 4. To obtain these objectives at the lowest possible cost. The material that is mined from the pit is divided into four different rock types and the overlying alluvium. Each of these materials is broken by using procedures tailored to its individual characteristics.

A NEW preparation plant has been put in operation to treat coal from the recently opened Concord mine, located about 15 miles west of Birmingham, Ala., by the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co., a U. S. Steel subsidiary. The mine produces metallurgical grade coking coal from the American seam for use as coke in the company's blast furnaces at the Fairfield and Enseley works. The capacity of the operation is 1000 tons of run-of-mine per hr, approximately half of which is delivered to the by-product coke plant at Fairfield after beneficiation to metallurgical grade. The remaining portion of the mine run is rock and refuse removed during preparation. No boiler coal or other fuels are produced by this mine.

THE bellows are important and necessary agents in most melting processes. In addition to seeing that these have sufficient soft cloth, extend far and wide, and are of good design, including good valves and good long tubes, and that they cannot break and lose the air received, it is very important to give attention to their installation so that they may easily effect their purpose. Therefore I now wish to proceed by noting some common devices for moving them, both with water and with man power, so that you may make use of them as the need arises.

Dwight and Julius Kruttschnitt, Jr., and while the plans of this Committee are not complete, it may he announced that 'the train will be run with the requisite number of Pullman, dining and baggage cars to accommodate those who desire to go, which will accompany the party during the entire week of the Arizona Meeting as per the following program, including, of course, the visit to the Grand Canyon. It is especially desirable that the Committee should know, at as early a date as possible, the number of those who desire to make the trip; and those who desire special accommodations such as drawing rooms, state rooms, etc., are especially requested to communicate as soon as possible with the Secretary of the Institute, stating the number in their party.

IT was recently shown1 that slip bands can be observed in bent germanium crystals after deformation, by means of etch pits along the slip traces. It is the purpose of this note to show how chemical etch pits can also be usedto examine the appear- ance of slip bands in silicon, as well as other deformation markings. A 30 ohm-cm, p-type single crystal bar, 2x1/4x1/8 in., was plastically bent at approximately 1200°C in a vacuum of 1x10-5 mm Hg. The axis of the crystal was coincident with a <III> direction, and the surface normal to the axis of bending was within 4" of a (110) plane.
