The Discrete Element Method is a numerical technique suitable for use in modeling the discontinuum behavior of jointed rock. The disadvantage of this method, in its application to analysis of underground excavations, is the necessity to discretize the complete problem domain. Since the far-field rock responds to the excavation as an elastic continuum, it may be appropriately represented by the Boundary Element Method. This exploits the inherent advantage of the Boundary Element Method in representing a quasi-infinite domain in terms of its internal surface geometry and associated boundary conditions. The procedures employed in developing a first-generation coupled Discrete Element-Boundary Element algorithm are described and the solution to a simple problem verifying the performance of the coupled code is presented. A procedure for numerical treatment of installed support systems is also presented.

George Hammell Cook was born at Hanover, Morris County, New Jersey, January 5, 1818. His early education was obtained in the country school, and he was, for a short time, a teacher in his native town. In 1836 he was engaged, as a civil engineer, in making surveys and locating the line of the Morris and Essex Railroad from Newark to Morristown, and the extension of the road to the Delaware River. Appreciating the advantages of a thorough education, and seeking a wider field of usefulness, he entered the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Troy in 1838, and, was graduated from that .school in 1839. In this institution he heard the lectares of Amos Eaton, the famous teacher, from whom so many of our older scientists caught their inspiration and love for the natural sciences. Some specific observations might be appropriate concerning the reporting of Research and Development results. Each report is usually directed towards a particular group, such as technical, operational financial, or marketing. The requirements and background of the group receiving the report must be considered, and the emphasis and coverage geared to the training of people concerned. For reports that might have large and varied distribution, it is often feasible to group, either as sections or appendixes, the special details and information of interest only to certain functions within the organization. (A check list prepared in conjunction with the various users of the report is sometimes useful to prevent omissions.) Typical points listed might be: Financial- (1) capital requirements, (2) timing of capital expenditures, (3) tax implications, including depreciation, depletion and investment credits, (4) changes in working capital.

ALL, strangers visiting this district are struck with the peculiar manner in which the pig-iron is graded. There are eleven regular grades, besides which, when gray forge is ordered, one-half of Nos. 1 and 2 Mill are shipped. Occasionally there is another grade Known as Silver Mill, which is made so seldom that I cannot describe it, and have no sample to exhibit. Most of you have found it difficult to grade properly and uniformly under the simpler system which obtains elsewhere, and can consequently readily imagine the increased difficulty with us. Each furnace employs an " expert," and even with this precaution, the system is not conducive, at all times, to amicable relations between buyers and sellers. I am told that it was adopted at the time Southern irons were seeking a market; but it still remains, although the time has come when our iron is sought for and has obtained for itself a place in the markets of the country. The grades are as follows:

Copper concentrates produced by many operations in the United States and South America contain chalcocite (79.9% Cu) as a major component, yet the grades of these concentrates rarely exceed 25 to 28% Cu. Mineralogical studies made by E.P. Cadwell indicated that the low grades were caused by dilution by pyrite rimmed with secondary chalcocite. Laboratory and plant tests proved that concentrates could be significantly upgraded by using a simple, low cost cyanide leaching technique to dissolve the rims and reject the pyrite. The many advantages of this new procedure are cited and the process steps and a typical flowsheet are described.

Chester Wells Purington was killed at Yokohama on Sept. 1, 1923, in the Japanese earthquake. Mr. Purington was born in Boston, Mass., Oct. 27, 1871. He prepared for his entrance to Harvard at the Boston Latin School and graduated from Harvard in the class of '93. He started out soon thereafter investigating gold deposits of the Appalachian system in the South and in 1895, made atrip to Alaska, investigating the gold deposits of that territory. The summer and fall of 1896 found him in the San Juan country of Colorado examining the gold and silver properties in the Telluride and Rico districts and in the La Plata Mountains. During the past twenty years, and especially in the last decade, hydraulic cyclones have found increasing application in metallurgical processing as classifiers and, under special circumstances, as thickeners. To a more limited extent cyclones have been used to extend heavy, or dense, medium separation into the finer size ranges, and several attempts have been made to separate dispersions of immiscible liquids with a view to use in the field of liquid- liquid extraction. Before considering several aspects of conventional application, less conventional applications and some potential uses of modified cyclones, the mechanism of separation within a cyclone and the effect of the, major variables will he summarized.

The environmental status of underground mining operations is critical to the health and safety of the miners; particularly in a large mine, the multitude of interacting parameters that can favorably or adversely affect the environmental status makes the manpower requirement of the routine checking of specific areas and conditions a formidable one. While the concept of environmental monitoring for miners has been considered for some time, until recently the availability of sensors to reliably measure the parameters of interest severely limited the utility of such systems. The status of sensors for mine use and the evaluation of enviornmental monitoring systems is reviewed.

This paper describes the results of a detailed study that was undertaken to define the spatial distribution of permeability within a five meter thick envelope around the CSM/ONWI room. Detailed fracture orientations and distribution were determined through mapping of the walls of the opening, logging of oriented core, and visual examination of borehole walls with a borescope and a T.V. camera. Over 3,500 measurements were made from which the three dimensional distribution of fractures was determined. Two principally different testing equipment designs and various methods of air injection tests were used in all boreholes to identify and characterize conductive fractures. Through analizing the distribution of permeability and fracture index around the room a zone of blast damage of approximately .5 m thickness was delineated. The effect of stress modification seems to extend farther into the host rock to approximately 3.5 m depth.

Abstract-Activated carbon is a strong adsorbent for amyl xanthate, capable of removing from solution up to a quarter of its own weight in xanthate. In selective flotation systems where depression is unstable, separation efficiency increases with activated carbon additions. The improvements observed are brought about by two mechanisms. First, by removing stripped and residual collector ions from solution, competition between depressant and xanthate is reduced and depression is stabilized. In addition, the texture of the froth phase at high pine oil concentrations is modified by activated carbon such that better drainage between the air bubbles takes place, alleviating the mechanical entrapment of depressed mineral particles. In treating a bulk copper/lead concentrate produced from GECO ore, selectively between galena and chalcopyrite is increased when activated carbon is used. Although the rate of flotation of galena is marginally lowered by activated carbon, a small extension in the duration of flotation allows the lead recovery to increase by 19% at the same recovery of copper. An addition rate of 0.75 kg/ton (1.5 lb/st) of bulk concentrate is suggested as optimum from this testwork. However, the actual level wed in the mill is dependent upon the residual concentrations of collector and frother in the bulk concentrate Pulp.

The amine flotation of feldspar from a magnetite concentrate produced at a domestic concentrator was investigated using zeta potential measurements, Hallimond tube flotation tests, and laboratory-scale flotation tests. The point of zero charge of six feldspars (microcline, orthoclase, albite, anorthite, anorthoclase, and oligoclase) range from pH 1.4 to 2.5. Hallimond tube flotation tests using amine flotation reagents were performed on these feldspars and on gangue material (quartz, albite, and microcline) from the magnetite concentrating plant. Laboratory-scale (623 g and 2500 g) flotation tests were performed on the magnetite concentrate to float the feldspar. The effects of three different collectors, two levels of collector concentration, three pH levels, starch, HF acid and regrind were investigated.

THERE are three chief production zones of tungsten ore in China. In the Province of Kiangsi mines are located at Kanchow, East River, and West River. Their combined production is understood to amount to 300 to 350 tons of ore per month, and their original exportation is made through the port of Kiukiang, largely to Shanghai. The second zone is in Kwangtung Province, the mines there being at Tayulin. Produc-tion reaches about 200 tons per month and cargo is gen-erally exported through the port of Hong Kong. In the Province of Hunan approximately 25 tons of ore are produced monthly in the mines at Ton-on. Tungsten ore from Kiangsi and Kwangtung Prov-inces is generally about 70 per cent WO, (tungstic acid), while that from Hunan is of lower quality, run-ning about 65 per cent WO3. Kiangsi ore is received from the mines in 100-1b. and Hunan in 224-lb. gunny sacks. No repacking is done except as it is made neces-sary by the condition of the sacks. Kiangsi Province contains the Chinese districts pro-ducing the largest amount of salable wolframite or tungsten. Many districts west and south of Kiangsi have been found to have wolframite deposits.-Com-merce Reports.

Two processes for agglomerating fine sized ores with low temperature coke are described. One process (Orcarb) agglomerates ores with limited amounts of carbon; the other (ore-carbon pellets) pelletizes fine sized ores, using low temperature cokes as the binder. Data are presented on the products obtained when taconite, magnetite, and hematite concentrates and several titanium oxide ores were used. Reduction of finely divided oxide ores has long been a major metallurgical problem. Various methods of agglomerating, notably briquetting, sintering, nodulizing, and pelletizing, have been developed and are in industrial use. Carbon is the usual reducing agent for oxide ores and attempts have been made to agglomerate fine ores with coking coal in order to get the metallurgical advantages of intimate contact and increased particle sizes suitable for subsequent smelting or reduction.
