"The use of soil improvement to utilize areas, which are not suitable for foundation purpose, has a long tradition. Due to the increasing demand of foundation works in areas of unsuitable soils, the improvement of the existing soils becomes even more important in the future.Various applications and systems for various demands exist around the world. Either it is a “simple” improvement for settlement reduction or a more important aim as liquefaction mitigation. However, each system has its advantages, limits and needs.Furthermore to the soil improvement, using various tools, soil mixing can also be used for applications like cut off and/or retaining wall.The paper will describe some basics of various techniques and different applications of the systems all over the world where the systems provided solutions for different purposes, e.g. simple foundation or liquefaction mitigation.It will describe also the main equipment which will be needed to execute these works under the various conditionsINTRODUCTIONSoil mixing is a methodology where the soil is improved by mixing it with cement, lime or other binders in situ by using a mixing tool. This methodology can be used either as wet mixing or as dry mixing. In the more frequently used wet mixing process, usually a mixture of binder and water, maybe with additives, is injected and mixed with the soil. Depending on the type of soil and binder, by the end of the mixing process, a mortar like mixture is created which hardens during the hydration process. In the dry mixing process, the binder is directly mixed with the soil and reacts directly with the existing soil and water.Mixing tools show several versions, so that they are mixing around either a vertical or horizontal axis, mixing in a trench and maybe are jet assisted. Figure 1 shows a classification done by Bruce 2010. Depending on the technique, improvement depth of up to 80 m can be achieved."

In recent investigations of the microstructure and crystallographic features of martensite by electgon microscopy,', '9 thin films (about 50 to l000A in thickness) have been used as specimens. It was found by W. Pitschl ,2 that the lattice relationships between the supefiaturated fcc matrix and the martensite formed in thin films were different from those observed after transformation in bulk material. Corresponding differences are to be expected in nucleation and in reaction kinetics in the formation of martensite in thin films, but have not yet been reported. In the course of the preparation of thin films of iron-base alloys for investigation by electron microscopy it was observed that films of alloys, whose martensite formation temperature (Ms) was below room temperature, formed martensite during the electrochemical thinning process conducted at or above room temperature. The chemical compositions and approximate bulkM,-temperatures of the three materials on which this observation was made are listed in Table I. The alloys were vacuum-melted from high-purity metals. It can be seen that the effect occurred in alloys that contain only sub-stitutional components as well as in alloys that contain carbon as an interstitial solute. The appearance of martensite formed in this manner is illustrated in Fig. 1, which represents a polished film of alloy No. 1 at XI0 magnification. The martensite plates can be recognized by their surface relief effects. In addition, heavily strained (owrinkledo) austenite can be seen near the edges of the film where it is thinnest and transformation stresses or strains can be accommodated by plastic deformation most easily. The nonuniform distribution of transformed regions is probably due to the varying thickness of the film. These observations were common to all materials listed in Table I. "Automatic flotation control in varying degrees of sophistication is practiced at a number of concentrators throughout the world. Practically, the variable conditions in the flotation circuit and the difficulty in maintaining accurate instrumentation information all add to the complexity of automatic control.Further development at the Kidd Creek concentrator has resulted in a 3075 mtpd copper flotation circuit capable of running twenty-four hours a day under the direct control of an optimizing supervisory computer.Three main streams, continuously monitored by an XRF analyser, supply circuit information to the optimizing computer. Circuit efficiency calculations (from smelter contract terms) and target setpoints allow the computer to determine the economic optimum direction to move the circuit based on the grade/recovery relationship. Circuit manipulation is accomplished by precise pumping of collector and frother reaqents together with accurate control of flotation bank pulp levels. The former uses computer controlled diaphragm pumps and the latter is achieved by control loops utilizing a float type level transmitter, variable position dart plugs and a process computer working to setpoints determined by the optimizing computer.The development of a fully automated flotation circuit is by no means complete, but increased knowledge and major hardware improvements have allowed its progression to a higher level of sophistication."

Gold in the stibnite veins of Costerfield, Victoria, was described in 1922 1, prior to any mineragraphic examination, as (a) free yellow gold (b) free rusty gold and (c) combined gold. The free yellow gold occurs in quartz and will amalgamate with mercury. The free gold of dull, rusty or copper-red colour occurs in massive stibnite and has been stated to resist amalgamation with mercury. The dull colour is only skin deep and the colour is bright when the rusty gold is scratched. The appearance of the rusty gold is spongy or cellular and it generally occurs near small cavities in the stibnite. The suggestion that the cellular character indicated the removal of a certain amount of stibnite leaving a residue of se.condary gold cannot be sustained.It now appears probable that the rusty gold is formed by the primary dissociation of a gold antimonide and is distinct in origin from the normal yellow gold which is deposited with quartz or stibnite from auriferous mineral solutions.The combined gold referred to in the earlier paper was the gold contained in the stibnite as revealed by assay. Such gold was at first thought to be either dissolved in the stibnite or else present as free interstitial particles too minute for observation in transmitted light in thin sections.Subsequent examination of numerous polished,surfaces disclosed the small particles of gold occurring in the grain boundaries in aggregates of fine grained stibnite 2. The assumption that all the gold in the stibnite, as revealed by assay, occurred in this way is now known to be incorrect, because limited amounts of a gold antimonide have been found in the veins.

Open cut mining of the Black Rock chalcocite ore started in 1963. A ground movement monitoring programme was commencing in the early stages of mining when signs of instabilityof the western wall became apparent. Eventually 100.000 cu vd, of overburden Were removed beyond the rim of the western wall in an attempt to stabilize the slope. Subsequent decpenlug and mining till the final batter angle of 45 resulted in deterioration and mining was stopped 38 ft short in the ulltimte design deplh of 520 ft.Investigations showed that the geology of the western wall , was a major factor in the instability of this wall. A block jointed model was made 10 illustrate some of the pehomena observed. "IntroductionThe combined library facilities of the five universities in the Generic Technology Center for Respirable Dust, The Pennsylvania State University, West Virginia University, University of Minnesota, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Michigan Technological University, represent one of the most extensive and comprehensive collections of information on respirable dust research which is available in the United States. The Center encompasses two major medical schools, the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at The Pennsylvania State University and .West Virginia University Hospital at West Virginia University, and includes national and international experts from such diverse disciplines as geology, geomechanics, mining engineering, mineral processing, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, material science, physics and several areas of medicine. In order to maximize achievements in research and facilitate early results application in the private industry, university, government and public sectors, a geographically dispersed Reference Center on Respirable Dust has been established at each of the affiliated universities. This network serves to encourage unity between the universities in the Center and coordination and communication with other entities who benefit from their research.Description of the Reference CenterIn this light, the goal of the Reference Center network is to identify at what location Information is available and to provide a means for others to access this information. It is especially necessary to have both ease of input and maximum retrieval capabilities available to all the research personnel in the Reference Center. At the same time, the service provided to the inquiring public must be complete and cost-effective. The Center's approach to realizing this goal incorporates advances in computerized and electronic searching of individual library holdings and the networking of major library and commercial search systems.The Reference Center uses the following means to achieve this goal. At each participating university, a hard copy collection ls maintained of the current respirable dust research in progress by that institution's personnel. Also, available. at each university ls a review of their past and present research on respirable dust. At each participating university a hard copy collection of annual status reports and of all publications produced by Center personnel for symposiums, national and international conferences ls maintained. A key word computer search capability ls available to participating universities. This computer search, by title, author and location, allows researchers to determine at which facility information is available, thus avoiding the tremendous expense and effort of housing all the information on respirable dust research under one roof. The method used to assess the reactivity of lime was evaluated to gauge it usefulness as a quality control tool. The effect of particle sizes, different lime and water masses for a fixed s:l ratio and the same for various s:l ratios on the reactivity values obtained, were investigated. An attempt to introduce the amount of grit produced during the slaking reaction as an additional measure of limeís quality and reactivity, proved to be unsuccessful. It was also found that the relative amount of lime slaked during the different tests was independent of the reactivity value of the lime. The investigation confirmed the usefulness of the accepted test procedure as are liable method to measure the reactivity of lime, despite various reservations expressed from a theoretical point of view.

Bi was electrorefined from alloys containing 10-90 wt% Pb, together with Cu and Ag as minor impurities, in a basic cell and in a recessed-channel cell with 27.5:72.5 NaCl-PbCl electrolyte at 450-470 degrees C and 10 000-20 000 A/m2. The voltage in the basic cell was as high as 9 V, with some carryover of Bi to the cathode observed, whereas in the recessed-channel cell it was as low as 285-635 mV. Flow patterns observed in a room-temperature model indicated that the recesses provide both static liquid hold-up and good mixing of the alloy, enhancing cell performance in combination with the reduced anode-cathode distance of 0.90 mm. The purity of the resulting anode product is as high as 99.9%

The corrosion behaviour of 304L stainless steel laser-cladded with various amounts of ruthenium (Ru) was evaluated in solutions of sulphuric acid and sulphuric acid plus sodium chloride at 25°C and 45°C by open-circuit potential and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization tests. In general, the addition of Ru to the stainless steel increased its corrosion resistance in 1 M H2SO4, as well as in 1 M H2SO4 plus 1 wt% NaCl. This was observed for a number of parameters such as corrosion rate, corrosion potential, open-circuit potential, and current density. However, increasing the amount of Ru added beyond a certain level did not result in further improvement in corrosion protection. For each environment there is an optimal Ru concentration for the best corrosion protection. For example, in 1 M H2SO4 at 25°C, 2.44 wt% Ru shows the least active surface in terms of corrosion. Further research into ruthenium coatings on stainless steels is recommended.

Five wells have been drilled in the Basker/Manta Block of VIC/P19, Gippsland Basin, resulting in sub-economic Intra-Latrobe Group oil and gas discoveries at Basker-1 and Manta-1. A total of 21 individual hydrocarbon bearing sandstones were intersected by the two wells. These reservoir sand bodies were deposited by fluvial processes in a lower coastal plain environment. The modelling of sand body orientation and geometry is a critical component in the evaluation of the two accumulations. Seismic resolution of the thin (average 2 m to 5 m) sand bodies is inadequate for mapping their orientation and distribution. Dipmeter data has been successfully applied to the problem of orienting the sand bodies using FMS images acquired during the drilling of Gummy-1 and reprocessed HDT data from Basker-1 and Manta-1. Prediction of lateral extensiveness (geometry) of individual sand bodies has also been attempted. Interpreted palaeocurrent direction from all three wells is dominantly from the NW to the SE. Reservoirs in the Manta-1/Gummy-1 area are interpreted to be predominantly channel sands, deposited by relatively low sinuosity streams. As such they would tend to have a laterally extensive, elongate geometry. Sand bodies deposited in the Basker-1 area show a predominance of laterally accreted cycles deposited by meandering streams. Channel geometry may then be limited in the downstream/upstream direction by internal permeability barriers such as clay plugs.

Precision surface mining is increasingly occupying a significant role in open pit mining. Improvements in technology now allow continuous surface mining of material well above 140 MPa (20 300 psi) efficiently and cost effectively when compared to drilling and blasting/primary crushing methods. These include the elimination of the use explosives and primary crushing, the ability to precisely extract the ore from the waste, or separate ores of varying chemistry and mine thin seams and non-homogenous orebodies cost effectively. In addition, precision surface mining extends the useful life of a mine by extending the mine boundaries. It can expand production capacity in existing mines and is particularly cost effective in greenfield start-up mines. Precision mining techniques result in higher percentage recoveries. This paper reviews several of these techniques for the Terrain Leveler« surface excavation machine (SEM), and shows their impact. Vermeer's current approach to precision surface mining is utilisation of the T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM. Several units have been proven in round-the-clock, seven day operations throughout the world. Among other innovations are design simplicity, stability, maneuverability, rear-mounted tilting drum and top-down cutting. The impact of these items are discussed in more detail in the paper. After a detailed analysis of the importance of machine availability on overall mine performance, Vermeer has extended its equipment line to include a direct-drive option for its T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM. In addition, improvements in dust suppression are presented. While the T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM is of optimum size and cost in small and medium sized mines, Vermeer has recognised that larger mines require larger machines with increased capacities. Vermeer will prototype the T1655 Terrain Leveler SEM later this year. Specifications of this machine and up-to-date preliminary results are presented. A discussion of the role of each machine size and driving mechanisms are included. Finally, the next stage in Vermeer's providing solutions to the surface mining community will be described - a continuous loader. The impact on current mine planning is presented using a detailed computer program developed for studying the impact of loading techniques and higher production rates on mine plan optimisation.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the performance characteristics of a 30-day around-the-clock gasification-pelletizing test conducted in October and November of 1980 with North Dakota Indianhead lignite. Gasification was conducted in a commercial-size, 6.5-it-diam, Single-stage, fixed-bed, atmospheric pressure producer with a rated capacity of about 30 million Btu/hr. Iron oxide pellets made from a commercial hematite concentrate were fired with the low-Btu gas in a 2.8-ft-diam by 35-ft-long pilot plant rotary kiln at a rate of 900 lb of pellets per hour. Gasifier operations at fuel feed rates up to 3 tons of lignite per hour and hematite pellet induration with raw 160-Btu/std ft3 lignite gas are described.

The application of a method for analyzing pressure build-up curves to determine the effective permeability in the Spraberry is presented. Sixteen upper Spraberry wells of the Driver area arc analyzed and show variations in the in-place effective permeability of 2 to 183 md. Since these value- are much larger than the .5 md. or less reported for the matrix rock. a large part of the vertical fractures noted in Spraberry cores- must be considered native to the formation. The effectiveness of the well fracture treatment in connecting the well bore to the native fracture system is analyzed by comparison of the effective permeability as determined from the PI test to that obtained from a pressure build-up curve. These results show that the fracture treatment is sufficiently effective in connecting tile well bore to the native fractrure system to yield a flow capacity within about 50 per cent of that dictated by the native fracture system About two-thirds of the wells show some degree of local blockage. INTRODUCTION Fractured reservoirs have been known in the past.' However, during the past two years the Spraberry formation has directed the attention of the petroleum industry to a study of the performance of a fractured reservoir. The large variation in the number of fractures noted in Spraberry cores rile large variation in the producing ability of offset well.. the dramatic effect of well treatment on well ,productivity. the unknown quantity of oil stored in the fractures and matrix rock. and the unknown oil to be recovered were part of the initial Spraberry puzzle. In this type reservoir where the well treatment is an important factor in determining the productivity. it i- particularly desirable to determine the in-place flow capacity of the drainage area at distance* far removed from the well bore. This value. when compared to the flow capacity obtained from a PI measurement, will show the effectiveness of the well treatment (completion. fracture treatment, acidization. etc. in establishing a flow capacity in the vicinity of the well bore equal to that in the more remote region. The object of this paper i.; to show the application of a method of pressure build-up analysis for this purpose in studying the Upper Spraberry formation in the Driver area. STATEMENT OF THEORY The theoretical basis for the application of a pressure buildup curve to show the effective permeability of the rock at distances far removed from the well bore has been presented in detail in earlier publications.', in the previous development it was shown that pressure build-up behavior of all wells could be reduced to the same dimensionless build-up curve of Fig. 1. Traditionally gold producers had built up hedge books to protect themselves against adverse changes in the commodity price, but diversified mining groups were staunchly opposed to hedging in any shape or form. The situation has evolved over the past few years. Gold miners have been reducing the size of their hedge books in line with the rising gold price. Commentators have talked about ædouble-digit dehedgingÆ and have suggested that this is the final countdown for gold hedge books. It sounded as if the era of hedging by mining companies was drawing to a close. But as appearances can sometimes be misleading, we decided to find out what mining companies were actually doing. Companies listed on stock exchanges are now obliged to give details of their derivatives holdings in their annual reports. Two or three years ago there was no such obligation. Our reality check was based on the latest annual report issued by three multinational mining groups; two with diametrically opposed views on hedging (Rio Tinto and Barrick) and the third (BHP Billiton) with an intermediate position. This snapshot of their derivative positions at a point in time revealed that Barrick and BHP Billiton have substantial derivatives positions (worth billions of dollars) to protect against adverse changes in foreign exchange rates and interest rates. Moreover Barrick has recently started hedging against increases in fuel prices. Despite its opposition to hedging, Rio Tinto has derivative positions worth several hundred million dollars, but these are primarily a legacy from various mergers and acquisitions over recent years or were entered into as a condition of project financing. Lastly we were surprised to discover that Barrick was holding asset-backed commercial paper (ABCP). So the idea that mining companies donÆt hedge their risks is just another urban myth.

A new heuristic sublevel mining stope optimizer is presented. The optimizer seeks the best locations and lengths of a series of vertical raises that, together with the blocks linked to each raise, define a mining stope. Five design constraints ? the footwall angle, the hangingwall angle, the number of raises, the maximum distance of a block from a raise, and the minimum width required to move the farthest block towards the raise ? allow the shape of the sub-stopes associated with each raise to be controlled. The optimization is done on the locations and lengths of raises using a genetic algorithm to efficiently sample the parameters? space. For each raise, a local network is defined in cylindrical coordinates around the raise such as to impose the design constraints. A maxflow algorithm on the local network is used to determine the optimal sub-stope for each raise. All substopes are combined to define the global stope for the entire deposit. The best global stope is obtained using a genetic algorithm to find the raise parameters providing the best profit over the entire deposit. Two synthetic cases and one real deposit are used to evaluate the new algorithm and compare the results with the single-raise optimizer. The multiple raises approach leads to significantly improved economics compared with the single-raise stope optimizer, and the dilution is also substantially reduced compared to the single-raise case.

The Phosphate Recovery Corporation operates three flotation plants, Nos. 1 and 2 concentrators about three miles northeast of Mulberry, Florida, and No. 3 plant at Wales, Tennessee. These plants represent the first commercial phosphate flotation operation and are also believed to be the largest nonmetallic flotation operation in the world at the present time. The details of this paper will be confined to plant No. 2, this being the newest and largest concentrator in Florida, and the flow sheet being practically the same as at plant No. 1. The No. 3 plant has been operated but a short time and has been shut down since December, 1932, on account of the decrease in phosphate rock production. The phosphate washers usually are located centrally on a known deposit so that about two hundred acres of ground can be mined economically to each washer location. The washers are moved to new areas when the distance becomes too great for economical pumping. The flotation plants are built either adjacent to a washer, so that current debris may be utilized, or on the site of a former washer where there is sufficient accumulated debris available for mining, and the flotation plants must also be moved from time to time. Most of the water used in the Florida flotation plants is recovered after passing through a circulating system where most of the fine suspended matter is settled out, but some make-up water is obtained from deep wells near the plant. Power is obtained from the Tampa Electric Co. through the distribution facilities of the International Agricultural Corporation. Flotation concentrate is hauled from the plant by trolley over the International Agricultural Corporation's trolley system, to the drying plant at Prairie, one mile northwest of Mulberry. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research at a Pittsburgh Coalbed longwall mine to evaluate and optimize bleeder ventilation and gob gas venthole longwall methane control systems. Gas flow into these two methane control systems was investigated using a combination of Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas studies and gob venthole pressure monitoring experiments. The insights gained from this research has facilitated the development of along wall subsided strata methane control system conceptual model. This model provides the basis for design suggestions to increase the efficiency of the gob gas venthole system to permit the bleeder ventilation system to become a "safety net" for methane control.

"Mill feed materials that are not run-of-mine ore are often a challenge for mineral processors and tend to accumulate in stockpiles, where they remain unprocessed for many years and become “slow moving inventories”. During a complete re-evaluation of the Clarabelle Mill operation (38,000 ton/day capacity) in 2000, it was concluded that there was an opportunity to assemble a 5,000 ton/day custom circuit to treat such stockpiles in the equipment that remained available during regularly scheduled maintenance shut-downs.This project was part of the larger Mill Redesign Project and involved testing the intended flowsheet under a number of operating scenarios for the first material to be treated: spent refractory bricks. The laboratory focus was on how to maximize returns using the available equipment and reagents.The circuit was successfully commissioned in the fall of 2000. As the brick stockpile was depleted, other potential feeds were evaluated at the laboratory, as well as in the new custom circuit itself. Processing of the spent refractory brick has yielded a significant contribution to the profitability of INCO. Significant opportunities lie ahead for generating more value from other slow moving inventories.INTRODUCTIONIntegrated mining operations tend to have slow moving inventories along the path from the mines to the finished products. Spent refractory bricks from furnaces and converters and furnace bottoms are materials that often end up in long-tern stockpiles. Such stockpiles are a challenge, although they represent small tonnages on an annual basis, because they are unique materials, which cannot be readily brought into the process at a rate anywhere near that at which they are produced, due to the high contents of deleterious components such as chromite or magnesia. Accumulation over years will eventually yield a metal inventory worthy of consideration given the right opportunity, such as availability of spare equipment or peak metal prices."

Large reserves of feldspar ore exist in the Aegean region of Turkey. The main colored impurities in these ores are iron- and titanium-bearing minerals such as anatase, rutile, sphene and ilmenite. In this study, a potassium feldspar ore containing mainly quartz and coloring impurities was subjected to beneficiation tests involving magnetic separation and flotation, which were applied either separately or in combination. Bench-scale flotation experiments using cationic collectors G-TAP and Flotigam V-4343 and using HF and H2SO4 as modifiers were employed to separate feldspar from quartz and to remove part of the titanium impurities. The best results were achieved with a combination of high-intensity wet magnetic separation and flotation. A feldspar concentrate containing 16.28% Al2O3, 10.75% K2O, 2.84% Na2O, 69.97% SiO2 and 0.16% Fe2O3 was produced. A quartz concentrate containing 2.30% Al2O3, 0.48% K2O, 0.42% Na2O, 0.07% Fe2O3 and 96.20% SiO2 was also obtained
