Static-Load Piledriving systems utilize hydraulic push to advance piles into the ground. Dynamic systems (ie. hammers and vibratory equipment) utilize impact, or vibration, to advance the piles. Static-Load systems are most commonly utilized in situations where noise or vibration would adversely affect the people, structures or equipment located near the site. Static-Load technology is most advantageous in situations where vibration, noise or access constraints make it difficult, risky or disruptive to utilize conventional piledriving systems.

The deposition of calcium carbonate scale on surface and subsurface production equipment creates an operation problem in many oil fields. The formation water in which the carbonate-scale-forming components are initially dissolved becomes supersaturated with calcium carbonate as a result of the drop in pressure during production. The continuous flow of a supersaturated solution through the production equipment results in the growth of a dense layer of calcium-carbonate crystals. For a scale layer to be built up, the supersaturated formation water should contact the walls of the production equipment. The tendency for scale to be deposited, therefore, will be low, if the crude has a low water cut and if the water is finely dispersed in the oil. A scale problem will occur, if at a high water cut part of the water is present as free water. The rate of scale deposition will then be approximately proportional to the rate of free water production. Depending upon where the formation water becomes supersaturated, scale may be deposited in the flow line only, in both flow line and tubing, and in some cases even in the perforations and in the formation near the wellbore. In the South Sumatran fields (Indonesia) the main difficulties encountered due to the deposition of calcium-carbonate scale have been restriction of flow through tubings and flow lines, wear and abrasion of plungers and liners, and stuck plungers or wellhead valves. So far, the only methods of combating the *Presently associated with Brunei Shell Petroleum Co., Ltd.. Seria. scale problem have been routine acidizing and additional well pulling. As for the pumping wells, it was estimated that some 50 percent of the total well-pulling effort was directly attributable to scale deposition. The most promising alternative was to prevent the deposition of calcium carbonate scale by means of chemicals. Inorganic polyphosphates such as sodium hexametaphosphate and trisodium polyphosphate are known to retard the formation of scale by the "threshold action". They are adsorbed on specific faces of the crystal nuclei and thus prevent crystal growth, thereby stabilizing supersaturation. Polyphosphates are effective at very low concentrations ( a few ppm), and far less than stoichiometric quantities are required to keep the scaling ions in solution. Recent investigations on barium sulfate scale1 have confirmed this mechanism. The types of polyphosphate mentioned can be applied as concentrated aqueous solutions either squeezed into the formation, lubricated down the annulus or injected via macaroni string. Several squeeze jobs with polyphosphate solutions have been carried out in the South Sumatran fields, however, with disappointing results. Lubrication down the annulus and injection through a macaroni string were not considered attractive in this area because of the kind of equipment and the degree of supervision these techniques require. Polyphosphates are also available in a granular, glassy form, which, in contrast with the readily soluble types already mentioned, show an extremely low

Emphasis is on the loading of small diameter (2 1/4" or less) explosives. Test results ire evaluated for operational and economic feasibility. Details are described of an explosives loading method which involves placing cardboard tubes with external couplings through the hollow drill steel and then Loading explosives into the tube casings after the drill rig has moved off. This method eliminates the hazards peculiar to loading explosives Through the kelly bar. The alternative method can be performed by existing drill rigs with or without minor modification. With modification, improvement in yield per blasthole and/or primary crushing rate provides opportunity so offset some or all of the additional cost.

Lime is of tremendous importance to modern industries. In agriculture it is regarded as essential to the continued fertility of many important regions; in building it is indispensable, and in the many ramifications of the chemical industries it is so necessary and so widely employed that it has been designated "the king of all the bases." Figure 1 shows a general view of a modern lime plant producing more than 500 tons of lime daily. In 1924 the production of lime was reported from nearly every State in the Union and amounted to more than 4,000,000 tons, valued at, nearly $40,000,000. For a production of that magnitude between 8,000,000 and 9,000,000 tons of limestone are required. The many problems involved in winning this great quantity of raw material from the natural rock and preparing it for the kilns have in the past received little attention from any governmental agency. Therefore, in compliance with a request from representatives of the National Lime Association in 1922, the Bureau of Mines began a study of problems in limestone quarrying in an effort to advance more economical methods of operation and the utilization of waste material. Field studies were made at many quarries, and the information thus compiled, besides data already at hand from work in other branches of the stone industries, were disseminated to operators in the form of mimeographed Reports of Investigations, eight of which were issued at intervals during 1922, 1923, and 1924. A questionnaire was appended to each report, and quarry operators were invited to contribute additional information obtained as a result of their actual experience and observation. Operators of lime plants have been cordial in their responses and have supplied the bureau with much valuable information. From the data thus obtained, supplemented by later field studies, the revised reports have been combined to form the major part of this bulletin, which is believed fairly to represent present knowledge on the subject of quarrying limestone for lime manufacture.

The biggest Port of Latin America - the Santos Port in São Paulo, Brazil - has been drilled and blasted by controlled underwater techniques in order to remove around 40,000 m3 (52,318 cubic yard) of rock divided in two outcrop rocks: Teffé and Itapema. Underwater pumped explosive, in combination with small cartridges areas, was successfully used in order to reach a target depth of -15m (-49 ft) and a width of 220m (722 ft) in the navigation channel. It was the first time that a pumped explosive was used in underwater blasting in Brazil and it represents a historic benchmark for projects of this kind in this country. The main challenges faced in this project include the control of the ground vibration, due to the necessity to carry out detonations 40m (131 ft) away from the quay wall - where the passenger terminal and the 80 year-old warehouse were located – and the rush schedule available, in order to finish the underwater drilling and blasting phase before the coming cruise season. Therefore, the perfect combination of an ideal pumped product with an effective pumping system has permitted to carry out the project in a record of less time than 3 months (against to the original expected time of 18 months), with all vibration events under control as result of the special ground vibration program carried out.

Its average daily production is nearly 4300 t of ore, for an annual production of 200 000 t of copper concentrate (28% Cu) and 33 000 t of zinc concentrate (57% Zn). This Bureau of Mines report discusses the principles of using computers to draw maps and plot geologic data of mining areas. The types of maps that can be drawn by a computer are reviewed, using as examples two separate areas where poor roof and gas emissions caused mining problems. Such maps can be used not only to help identify problem areas, but also to predict areas where problems could occur, thus giving mine operators time to work out solutions prior to mining. The average cost of a computer-drawn map for a mine property is less than $100, including computer time and man-hours for data preparation.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH/PRL) conducted a series of large-scale experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of optical flame detectors, photoelectric smoke detectors, and combined ionization and photo­electric smoke detectors for rapidly detecting mining equipment cab fires. The detec­tor alarm times were then used to trigger the discharge of a fire inerting system inside the cab to suppress cab material fires. This paper discusses the types of fire detectors tested, the experiments that Were conducted, and the results that were obtained. Con-" elusions are that rapid detection of equipment cab fires can be achieved to trigger the discharge of a fire inerting system inside the cab to protect the operator in the cab.

Slope monitoring has been an important issue in static terrestrial lidar for some time. Several solutions for monitoring the progress of a slide have been devised over the years. All of these solutions have required users to be in the field operating the lidar equipment. This paper presents a new system developed using the Optech ILRIS-HD or ILRIS-LR lidar and the scripting language of PolyWorks to produce an autonomous slope monitoring system. This system has proven invaluable in detecting and alerting mine workers to potential danger within their mine sites. It has already been deployed in two mine sites and is scheduled to be installed at a third.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unpre- cedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 400,00 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country's oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the be- ginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million bar- rels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but pro- duced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation's petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. ce World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum prod- ucts has become the order of the day every day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has been increased enough to meet domestic require- ments by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the over-all daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 50 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields - having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly or perhaps more rapidly than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each, were discovered and proved - an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year's supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the num- ber of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. WHEN dry chlorine gas is made to act in the cold upon finely¬divided gold,' it converts the latter with evolution of heat into auro-auric chloride, Au2CI4, a hard, dark-red, hygroscopic salt. Moisture splits this salt into aurous and aerie chloride, Au2C14 = AuCI + AuCI3; treatment with water converts it into auric chloride and gold, 3 Au2CI4 = 4 AuC13 + Au,. Aurous chloride, when stirred with water, undergoes a similar decomposition, 3 AuCI = AuCI3 + Au,. These decompositions of auro-auric chloride and of aurous chloride furnish the explanation for the practice of moistening an ore before it is treated by the Plattner chlorination-process; practical experience having shown that gaseous chlorine gave an unsatisfactory extraction with dry ore. According to Rose,' fine gold is acted upon more slowly by chlorine than gold containing some base metal, e.g., copper. He also states that small quantities of silver increase the rate of solution, but adds that the coating of silver chloride formed checks, and finally stops, further action, if the percentage of silver be increased beyond a certain undetermined amount. Bromine' acts upon finely-divided gold in a manner similar to chlorine; the auro-auric bromide, Au2Br4, however, is not hygroscopic. Upon treatment with water it is decomposed as is the corresponding chlorine salt. It is generally believed that bromine does not act as energetically upon gold as does chlorine. Over the years, predictive techniques for Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) and the natural processes affecting acid generation have received considerable attention. Less emphasis has been placed on the sampling strategy and the integration of testwork results with the geological data base. The sampling strategy employed and the development of a geological model to determine the spatial distribution and volume of acid producing material are often crucial for developing cost-effective containment and mitigation measures. The geological model provides a link between the occurrence, timing, destination and placement of mined waste rock. Careful and accurate interrogation of a comprehensive geological database provides this linkage. The AMD testwork program at Cadia in NSW has been designed to identify the temporal selective handling requirements that will be required during operation. Sampling involved collection of representative combinations of all waste rock types identified within an extensive geological database. These samples were subjected to static, kinetic and accelerated weathering predictive tests. Preliminary results have been used to construct a waste block model for the deposit that identifies the quantity and distribution of acid producing material. Integration of the block model with the mine scheduling determines when the material will be mined.

The Crinum mine has recently completed workings in the southern area of the mine. Over the 10 years of longwall production 40 million tonnes have been extracted and the mine has experienced over 40 longwall face, 3 main gateend, and 2 tail gateend roof falls as well as 5 roadway roof falls away from the longwall. Weak roof (less than 10MPa (1450psi) in the bolted horizon) has been the principal roof control issue at the mine. However, weak, highly cleated coal, water inflow from overlying aquifers, some minor structure and a diatreme in the main headings have also contributed to the challenges at the mine. This paper describes the geotechnical experience over the 10 years, the mine?s approach to addressing the issues and the relative success of these approaches.

From Sept. 22-24, the Las Vegas Convention Center will be home to MinExpo 2008, the world?s largest mining equipment show that comes along once every four years. Sponsored by the National Mining Association (NMA), this year?s show is on pace to be the largest ever. Nearly 1,300 exhibitors have purchased nearly 55,700 hm2 (600,000 sq ft) of booth space. At the center of it all will be some of the most impressive mining equipment that the industry has to offer. And in the shadows of the massive haul trucks, drill rigs and bulldozers, attendees will be able to see the latest and greatest products including hand tools; the latest in automation and robotics; safety and communications equipment; longwall mining equipment; engines and parts; materials handling and processing equipment and services; pollution control equipment; reclamation equipment and services; computer applications; consulting and financial services and more. While many companies will be on hand to display the tried and true, there will also be plenty of new things to see. ?We anticipate that a whole range of new products will be introduced at the show,? the NMA said of the show that has been called the world?s richest deposit of mining technology, services and products. In addition to the show that will take place in Center Hall and North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, MinExpo 2008 includes a conference program with 20 educational sessions that will tackle the most timely and pressing issues affecting the mining industry. The Bureau of Mines study described in this report was conducted in the Denver, Colo., area (1) to summarize existing conservation practices as related to the most beneficial utilization of deposits of sand and gravel; (2) to identify the conflicting positions of the aggregate producer, the mineral owner, nearby residents, and local government officials responsible for determining land status and for issuing operating permits; and (3) to show the need for planning in Denver and in other expanding communities toward obtaining the benefits of conservation of our rapidly dwindling mineral resources. In order to determine the effects of urbanization on the Denver aggregate industry, interviews were held with owners of sand and gravel operations, with producers of concrete and bituminous pavement, with city and county planning and zoning personnel, and with representatives of various interested organizations. The conservation and ultimate utilization of deposits of construction raw materials near expanding urban areas can best be accomplished by long-range land-use projection and the requesite cooperation of technically advised planning and zoning administrators, government officials, mineral producers, and land developers.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY An approach borrowed from the petroleum industry was applied to the gas development evaluation for the Bulga underground coal mine in New South Wales, Australia. The results enabled the coal mine operator, Xstrata Coal, to systematically plan the extraction of gas in harmony with mine production planning of multiple coal seams. This has allowed for a more proactive approach in preparing the resources and infrastructure needed to capture the gas and accelerate coal mining while maintaining their high level of commitment to safety. Norwest has for decades used gas recovery simulation models to assist the petroleum industry and the coal bed methane (CBM) industry in understanding and forecasting fluid saturations and flow behavior. Norwest developed a similar process with Xstrata to migrate existing mine data at Bulga into reservoir simulation models to study various drainage alternatives. An interesting feature to the evaluation was also developing an understanding of test procedures and nomenclature from the mining industry to properly translate the data for input in simulators developed for the petroleum and CBM industries. The model was then calibrated to actual field data collected from drainage pilot tests that Norwest helped design and monitor at Bulga. The resulting calibrated predictions were then used to develop budgets, schedules, resource requirements, and alternatives for capturing the gas and delivering it to market ahead of mining. Increasing revenue, reducing emissions, improving schedules and cutting costs for the mining operations have all contributed to justifying this advanced approach at Bulga. It has also allowed Xstrata to expand their focus to the sizable gas reserves in seams not currently planned for mining. Several of these seams would be economic gas development targets once the gas recovery infrastructure is installed for the mine. The evaluation process was refined throughout this project and the resulting approach will benefit Xstrata with their broader strategic development of resources in the Hunter Valley and beyond to their worldwide operations.

The annual reports of the research and technologic investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines on the occurrence, properties, mining preparation, and uses of coal, of which the present report is the seventh,4/ are intended to be brief summaries of progress. They are guides to the current work and publications of the Bureau but do not replace the more complete reports published by individuals and groups of workers on specific problems. The annual reports present the results of tests, often in advance of publication in other forms, but original contributions in research are reserved for initial publication by their authors. A survey of the accomplishments of the Bureau in research and technologic work on coal during the 5 year period 1935-40 has been made available in the form of a bibliography.5/ This supplements a similar bibliography on this subject that covers the first 25 years of the Bureau, 1910-35.6/

The trapezoidal tapered ring method has made significant progress in recent years for shielded-TBM projects, excavating tunnels with high overburden, strict water tightness criteria, and multiple curve alignments. The selection of compatible tapered rings is critical for successful advancement of the tunnel, assuring efficient installation of rings, as well as prevention of ring damage and excessive leakage. Using experience from the Arrowhead Tunnels Project, this paper describes guidelines for ring selection in tunnel curves, geometric analyses that comply with criteria principals, and provides techniques developed to determine the appropriate relative key position.

Occupational health and safety is regulated by statute and common law. South Africa has, like many other countries, legislated extensively on occupational health and safety. Despite the body of legislation, the common law continues to play an important role as far as it concerns contractual, delictual and criminal liability. Two major Acts regulate occupational health and safety viz. the Occupational Health and Safety Act, No. 85 of 1993 (?OHASA?) and the Mine Health and Safety Act, No. 29 of 1996 (?MHSA?). The MHSA applies to mines and works as defined and related aspects. OHASA applies to other industries but does not apply to employers and workplaces to which the MHSA and certain matters covered by the Merchant Shipping Act, No. 57 of 1951 apply. See section 1(3) of OHASA. 2 The employer?s health and safety obligations in terms of the MHSA 2.1 Section 2(1) of the MHSA provides amongst others, as follows: ?The employer of every mine that is being worked must: (a) ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, that the mine is designed, constructed and equipped: (i) to provide conditions for safe operation and a healthy working environment (ii) ... (b) ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, that the mine is commissioned, operated, maintained and decommissioned in such away that employees can perform their work without endangering the health and safety of themselves or of any other person?.
