There was a time, not too long ago, when the most daunting challenges facing those in the mining and mineral processing industries could be solved through better technologies and better practices. But now the challenges that come from the actual acts of mining and processing are just part of the bigger picture. SME?s Colorado Section of the Mineral Processing Division (MPD) hosted its 63rd annual meeting at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, April 25-27 and, while the conference had its fair share or mineralolgy and processing presentations that were heavy on the technical side of things, this year?s conference was also focused on the issues of permitting, regulation compliance and legislative issues. The so-called ?softer? issues, that, if not addressed, can lead to very real and very hard challenges. Under the theme ?Mine your own business - permits, startups, expansions and resources,? even the most dedicated metallurgists were drawn into the discussions of politics and legislation, and how those issues affect their business. Fittingly, Colorado Mining Association (CMA) president Stuart Sanderson was honored with the Arthur C. Daman Lifetime Achievement Award. Sanderson, an outspoken proponent for the mining industry in Colorado and beyond, also presented the keynote address to the lunch crowd where he spoke about framing public opinion toward mining and the efforts of the CMA to move the public opinion dial in a direction more favorable to mining. Sanderson explained that Colorado, once a Republican stronghold, turned after 2002 and now is controlled by Democrats who are traditionally less supportive of the mining industry. Sanderson said the deciding factor in the power shift was money, as supporters of Democrats outspent Republicans in the most recent election cycles. CMA has done its part to keep mining going in the state with a broad marketing campaign that was outlined by Sanderson.

At the operations level, productivity is a principle key to profitability. If you are competing with other mines that are paying roughly the same wage rate and the same prices for capital, materials, and energy, the only way your profit can be greater is by producing more output per unit of input. Mines with higher productivity have higher profit margins. Higher profit margins lead to greater operating cash flow, and cash flow is what distinguishes a dog from a cash cow. The turnaround in U.S. metals during the 1980s was in large part due to incredible improvements in productivity. According to statistics compiled by Kaufmann, 1991, labor productivity, measured as tonnes of primary production/manhour, increased 64% in steel, 94% in copper, 75% in lead, 143% in zinc, 132% in molybdenum, and 75% in gold. These improvements were hard won. However, with most modernization programs now complete, measuring and monitoring productivity becomes even more important as producers strive to maintain the gains they have achieved.

The quality of mineral additives used 1n a drilling fluid (mud) can dramatically affect the fluid's properties and the overall cost of drilling an oil or gas well. The principally used minerals are bentonite, barite, barite/hematite blends and hematite alone. The high specific gravity minerals, barite and hematite, are used to increase drilling fluid density. Bentonite clay is used to increase drilling fluid viscosity, gel strength and to provide a low permeability filter cake. A multi-million dollar investment in a well and the safety of the personnel on the drilling rig can depend on how effectively these mud additives perform with other constituents in the mud. This paper points out effects caused by small amounts of certain carbonate and sulfide mineral impurities in barite or hematite and how polymeric extender additives in bentonites contribute to unpredictable behavior of a mud. Effects like these are the reason why oil companies who use these materials sometimes set their own quality standards beyond those already specified in API Spec. 13A. Also discussed in this paper are the current standardization activities in API Committee 13 on these minerals.

The effect of pulping reagents on the flotation de-inking of laser printed wastepaper was investigated with regard to the removal efficiency of toner and mineral filler particles for different pH values. These results show that caustic pulping causes the toner to be released from the fibers at larger particles sizes. On the other hand, acid pulping not only causes the toner to be released at smaller particles sizes but also increases the concurrent flotation removal of mineral filler particles. It was experimentally observed that the froth generation and stability during flotation were improved for acidic pH values.

Sulfides present in the troctolitic and footwall rocks are placed into one of three major zones (hornfels, cloud, and basal) on the basis of their stratigraphic position and mineralogy. Hornfels sulfides, enriched in Fe, represent remobilized sedimentary sulfide. Sulfides from the Cloud Zone are probably magmatic and are enriched in PGE, Cu, Ni, and Ag. The basal sulfides, composing most of the ore, resulted from contamination of the magma by remobilized sedimentary sulfide. The basal sulfides exhibit a differentiation trend in their mineralogy and chemistry. PGE, Cu, and Ag are enriched with increasing differentiation which is attributed to fractionation within an immiscible sulfide liquid.

INTRODUCTION The two unit operations in cut-and-fill stoping that would benefit most from increased mechanization are drilling blastholes and moving broken ore to the ore¬passes. Drilling in current practice is done with hand¬held jackleg and stoper drills. Broken ore is commonly moved from the face to the orepass by a small slusher. This type of equipment can be easily moved through the raises. Hand-held drills have a slow drilling rate and require one operator for each machine. Drilling can be done much faster by small jumbo-mounted machines as two or more drills can be operated by one miner. Load-haul-dump (LHD) units move broken ore from the face to one or more orepasses at a much faster rate with less loss and dilution than slushers. These units are mobile and may be used at more than one place during a shift. The problem which must be overcome in applying this higher degree of mechanization is the restricted means of access inherent in current practices. Cut-and¬fill methods are usually applied to mining veins that are narrow, irregular in dip and strike, or where ground con¬ditions require the support of sand fill. The mechanized equipment which is needed to accomplish high produc¬tion cannot be raised or lowered through raises without being disassembled. A jumbo which will give the desired performance would be mounted on a rubber-tired carriage with a diesel engine for propulsion. Twin hydraulic booms run by a small air motor would carry pneumatic drills. Over¬all dimensions of the unit would be about 8 m (26 ft) in length, 1.6 m (5'/z ft) in width, and 1.6 m (5'/z ft) in height. An LHD of the desired capacity would be rubber¬tired and either diesel or electric-powered. The overall dimensions of a 2.3-m (3-cu yd) unit will be about 8 m (26 ft) in length, 1.8 m (6 ft) in width, and 1.5 m (5 ft) in height. It will weigh about 12 700 kg (28,000 1b). It can readily be seen that conventional raises can¬not handle this size equipment. The most desirable means of access enables equipment to be driven into the stoping areas. Ramps can enter the stope by being driven upward in the vein walls or by being developed in the vein on top of the fill as the stope advances. This ramp system not only permits the use of rubber-tired equipment in multiple working places but also enables its removal for repairs without component breakdown. In the proposed method, as in conventional cut-and¬fill stoping, sand fill will replace the mined-out ore. By constructing an inclined timber floor at one end of the stope, a ramp can be maintained on top of the fill and advanced as the stope is advanced cut by cut (Fig. 1). The ramp is, therefore, developed during the stoping process and is only driven as a tunnel when rising over and around the sill and crown pillars. A stoping section consists of three blocks of different geometric shapes. The first and last blocks to be mined will be triangular in the plane of the vein, and the blocks between will have the shape of parallelograms (Fig. 1). The first block will develop the initial ramp by breast stoping and filling to the ramp floor (Fig. 2). The ramp will need to be completed through to the next level be¬fore stoping of the subsequent block can begin. The subsequent blocks are mined by back stoping with the next ramp being developed at the other end of that block (Fig. 3). The length of each subsequent block can be varied without changing the slope of the ramp. As the new ramp is developed, the previous ramp is filled along with the stope cut. Access up and down is maintained through the stope. The final block is again breast stoped as no new ramp will be developed at the end line for jumbo egress. Boreholes provide ventilation between levels as well as utility access. They can also provide a secondary escapeway for personnel during periods of development. These boreholes would be located about 3 to 4.5 m (10 to 15 ft) in the footwall and spaced about 183 m (600 ft) apart along the vein. The orepasses are spaced about 61 m (200 ft) apart in the vein. This spacing allows not only a short tram for the LHD unit but also provides surge capacity for the ore between haulage trains. These passes are raised from the haulage levels. As development progresses, the raises are driven through the sill pillar, and then car¬ried in the fill as stoping progresses. Ventilation and utilities can be maintained through an orepass when it is not needed for ore. The end line orepasses are intended for this purpose as well as for personnel emergency egress. Overall dimensions and criteria assumed to illustrate the ramp method of access in a highly mechanized cut¬and-fill stope are: haulage level spacing of 61 m (200 ft); ramp gradient of 17%; average dip of approximately 1.57 rad (90°); initial stope length of 358 m (1177 ft); subsequent stope length of 179 m (588 ft); average stoping width of 3 m (10 ft) ; sill pillar thickness of 3.6 m (12 ft); crown pillar thickness of 1.8 m (6 ft); bored raises of 1.5-m (5-ft) diam; and cribbed orepasses of 1.2 x 1.2 m (4 x 4 ft) through the sill pillar and 1.2 m (4 ft) square inside the cribbed portion. DEVELOPMENT The ramp access system lends itself well to conduct¬ing the several phases of development concurrently. Cost reduction programs can focus on total cost or unit cost, but unit cost is usually the principal objective. The production cost per unit is: [Unit cost = Total cost Production volume] Consequently, any activity that reduces the total cost or increases the production volume will reduce the unit cost. Production volume is increased by (1) maximizing the availability of the production equipment and (2) maximizing equipment performance during periods of operation. Most operations managers routinely focus on volume because the factors influencing volume are generally well understood and congruent with the managers' technical skills. In fact, production volume (as a percentage of maximum achievable capacity) is widely recognized as one of the most significant measures of operational performance.

"In 2015, 40 longwall mines provided nearly 60% of the US coal production from underground mining methods. This represents a substantial, yet gradual increase from just under 50% over the last 5 years. As a result of this increased production share, the percentage of ground fall related fatalities in longwall mines has also increased when compared to all US underground coal mines. Additionally, about 80% of ground fall related fatalities have occurred in areas where the roof was supported. In an attempt to better understand the status quo of current US longwall support practices, a sample of 21 longwall mines were visited, representing about 40% of the currently active longwall mines in 4 of the 5 major US longwall producing regions. The resulting data was obtained from a wide variety of overburden depths, geologic conditions, mining heights, ground conditions, support practices, and gateroad configurations. The data collected is reported using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The results from the research update previous efforts in classifying mining accidents and injuries as well as current support practices. This data provides a necessary background for future research aimed at further reduction of ground fall accidents and injuries. INTRODUCTION Maintaining ground stability in gateroad entries is essential for longwall productivity and safety (Campoli, 2015). In 2015, 148 unintentional roof falls were reported in US longwall mines. About 34% of these resulted in mineworker injuries. Safety considerations not only include injury from roof and rib falls but also egress from the longwall face during an emergency (Mucho et al., 1999). Over the past 30 years, a number of researchers have studied longwall tailgate support performance (Mirabile, 2015). This research aims to take a snapshot of the ground support installed in modern US longwall mines and provide a supplement and update to the overview provided by Barczak (2005). This will provide a framework for future research into improving gateroad support systems. BACKGROUND Large unplanned roof falls at or above the primary support or those impeding travel and/or ventilation must be reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Reportable roof falls, normalized based on production in million metric tons, generally relate to the amount of roof exposed during the mining process (Pappas and Mark, 2012) and provide an evidence-based statistical background for this review of current support practices. Figure 1 shows the reportable roof fall rate in US underground longwall mines for the period 2006-2015 (MSHA, 2016). Over the past decade, roof fall rates have shown a gradual decrease with numbers now at a rate nearly half of what was observed just five years ago. However, over the past few years, roof fall rates in US longwall mines appear to have stagnated at levels just over 1 per 2,000,000 tonnes mined."

Loss of visibility due to the occurrence of atmospheric fogging in underground mine airways can lead to a reduction in travel times and loss of production efficiency, an increase in the frequency of vehicular and foot traffic accidents and difficulty in checking rock surfaces for instability and loose material. Where hot and humid surface air meets colder underground air, conditions for fog formation nay be present. Further, suspended particulate matter from diesel exhausts or stoping operations together with slow movement of air along passageways nay contribute to formation. The study describes an investigation being undertaken with the cooperation of Kennecott's Ozark Lead Company to identify causes of the problem.

Ceramics are usually used to line chutes, pipes, dust collectors, separators, cyclones or bins where abrasive or corrosive material is moving. Improvements in ceramic manufacturing methods and quality, use of other abrasion resistant materials in combination with Alumina ceramic, improved adhesives and installation methods allow the use of Alumina ceramic tile in applications with impact. This paper discusses the criteria to determine if ceramics can provide a cost effective alternative to other liners for abrasive material handling applications, design parameters for liner systems, system costs, and case histories. The goal will be to provide a practical guide for improving the performance of existing ceramic lined systems or determining if ceramics is a cost effective solution for your abrasive material handling applications.

Virtually all structures show some signs of distress due to deterioration of the building components, to changed loads, or to changed support conditions. Changed support conditions result from ground movements. In mining regions many cases of structural distress are attributed to mining without considering alternative causes. This is particularly true of coal mining since it occurs under extensive areas. Coal mining is estimated to have already undermined more than eight million acres and may eventually undermine 40 million acres in the United States (HRB Singer, Inc., 1977). Other nonmetal and metal underground mines impact much smaller areas. Although it is sometimes difficult, even with careful study, to identify the actual cause of damage, persons responsible for underground coal mining should at least be aware of possible causes of building stress other than mine subsidence. This paper presents information on distress to structures and briefly reviews a number of causes of ground movements other than subsidence: Mass movements, dissolution, erosion, frost action, shrinking and swelling, yield into excavations and compressibility

We in Kennecott are well aware that Alaskans are interested in the progress of our project at Ruby Creek. We would very much like to be able to present you with a final report at this time and tell you about a new mine. I'm afraid, however, that it will be several years at best before such a report can be made. This, then, is an interim report to describe briefly some of our findings to date, and to acquaint you with some of the problems, both geologic and economic, which must 5e resolved favorably before we can talk about a mine. There are several things about this project which make it unusual and interesting to those of us who have been connected with it. Firstly, there is the fundamental importance to Alaska, in the present stage of its economic history, of any undertaking which offers promise of turning a natural resource into a competitive export product. I am sure all of us would get a lot more satisfaction out of having a part in bringing in a new mine in Alaska than we would out of adding another one to the long list in, say, Arizona.

This paper presents a vision system capable of providing an accurate estimate for the volume of stockpiles using 2D images. By imaging a stockpile from multiple viewpoints with a two-camera system, a 3D point cloud of known scale is generated using image-based 3D reconstructions. With a small amount of user interaction, the points that correspond to the surface of the stockpile are extracted and used to measure the volume. The hardware required for the two-camera system is light enough to be carried by a small unmanned aircraft and is a cheaper alternative to LiDAR while still being competitive in terms of accuracy. When testing the volume measurement algorithm on a stockpile of known volume, the measured output was found to have less than a 3% error from the ground truth.

Novel compounds of hydroxycarbamoyl carboxylic acids, including 2-hydroxycarbamoyl -3-methlcyclohexane carboxylic acid (HCMC), 2-hydroxycarbamoylmethyl decylen-4-yl carboxylic acid (HCDC) and 2-hydroxycar-bamoylmethyl tridecylen-4-yl carboxylic acid (HCTC) were synthesized. The flotation behaviors of diaspore, kaolinite and illite using these compounds as collectors were investigated. The flotation results revealed that the floatability of the minerals was, in descending order, diaspore and kaolinite, followed by illite, and the ability to collect the minerals was, in ascending order, HCMC and HCDC, followed by HCTC. At a dosage of 2×10-4 mol/L, both HCDC and HCTC show a strong ability to collect diaspore and a weak ability to float kaolinite and illite. The flotation recovery of diaspore is over 90% and that of kaolinite and illite less than 30%. Moreover, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectrum and zeta potential, as well as the adsorption amount, indicated that the adsorption interaction between HCTC and diaspore was primarily a kind of chemisorption in the form of chelate rings, while the interaction between the collector and aluminosilicate mineral was dominated by physisorption. It was concluded that the novel hydroxycarbamoyl carboxylic acid compounds are highly selective collectors for the flotation of diaspore vs. aluminosilicate minerals.

With the sharp decrease of sulfide nickel resources, the nickel laterite is becoming more attractive as nickel oxide, nickel matte, and nickel-iron. This study investigated the mineral phase structure, chemical analysis, thermal properties, and element distribution characteristics of the rotten rock layer deposited in the Southeast Sulawesi Ophiolite Belt. The results show that the nickel laterite deposited in Southeast Sulawesi Island, Indonesia, belongs to the typical high-nickel and low-iron garnierite-type laterite. The concentrations of nickel and iron of the nickel laterite are 1.99 wt% and 17.55 wt%, respectively. The serpentine, olivine, clay, chlorite, hematite, and magnetite are the major minerals, and the pyroxene, actinolite, limonite, and chromite are the minor minerals in the nickel laterite in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. Serpentine and olivine are the main nickel minerals with an average nickel concentration of 3.65 wt% and 1.73 wt%, respectively. The Fe and Ni have homogeneity and symbiosis in the serpentine and olivine, and their concentrations are often positively correlated.

Similar to modern day petro-chemical processes, the flotation column is a complete break from the conventional manner of floating on a batch basis in cells. The column has a reputation of being only suited for cleaning applications, particularly that of molybdenum cleaning. The original column, invented and developed by Column Flotation Co. of Canada, Ltd., was developed as a Rougher-Scavenger. Only after proving its capability in this field was cleaning allowed. One rougher-scavenger column in closed circuit with a cleaner column produced better grade and recovery than a conventional cell plant consisting of one stage of roughing, two scavenging and four stages of cell cleaning. Three cleaner columns replaced 13 stages of conventional cell cleaning and resulted in higher grades and recoveries. The gentle countercurrent action of the column itself together with complete automatic control enable this machine to produce such results.

A study was carried out to process a sulfide mineral concentrate from Norwest of Mexico containing 97 g/t Au, 0.15% Cu, and 15% Fe. An oxidative acid pretreatment was investigated using ferric sulfate as oxidant, followed by leaching of gold with sodium cyanide. Scanning electron microscopy, SEM-EDS, and X-ray diffraction, XRD, the analysis confirms the presence of quartz and pyrite species. First, a leaching was carried out without pretreatment, at ambient conditions, T = 25 °C and P = 1 atm, obtaining only a 45.2% gold extraction. Once the presence of Fe and Cu sulfides had been confirmed, the Eh-pH diagrams were constructed for the Fe-S-H2O and Cu-S-H2O systems, where it is appreciated that pyrite and chalcocite can dissolve with high oxidation potentials and forming sulfur, oxidizing to sulfate at highly acidic conditions. The oxidized concentrate was neutralized and adjusted to pH > 10.5; it was leached at ambient conditions, at different particle sizes, 44, 37, and 26.5μm, achieving an Au extraction of 75% using a concentration of 0.5% NaCN, 26.5μm particle size, 20% solids, and P = 1atm. Then the oxidized material was subjected to different temperatures, 25, 50, and 70 °C, under the same conditions and obtaining Au extractions up to 92% at 70°C. Additionally, the leaching process was compared using an autoclave reactor at moderate pressures, obtaining an increase in the extraction of Au up to 98% in 2 h, at T = 70 °C and P = 0.62 MPa.

We studied yttrium extraction from untreated zircon sand processing waste tailings. Xenotime mineral as the rare earth element source with an abundance of yttrium (REY) was detected in sufficient grade for extraction. As much as 9.03% yttrium exists in zircon tailings (analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry). The presence of yttrium was confirmed by X-ray diffractometry in xenotime minerals, which are yttrium carriers (Y-PO4). The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of leaching conditions on yttrium recovery from zircon sand after alkaline fusion treatment. Alkaline fusion was chosen to decompose phosphate into hydroxide in the xenotimemineral,which will reduce further required hydrometallurgical processing.Alkaline fusionwas carried out for 3 h at 450 °C, with a ratio of sodium hydroxide to zircon tailings sand of ~ 1:1. The alkaline fusion product was leached with water, followed by hydrochloric acid treatment to leach the yttrium. Yttrium recovery reached 87% under optimum conditions (60 °C, 1MHCl, and solid-to-liquid ratio = 1/10 for 7.5 min). A suitable model for yttrium dissolution with hydrochloric acid was diffusion through a solid particle ash layer. The calculated activation energy (EA) for this model was 20.21 kJ/mol.

Successful implementation of computer systems deals with meeting final systems objectives and cost and schedule requirements, but the final success is dependent upon personal inter- action. This is a case history of the installation of responsibility reporting at The Anaconda Co.'s Twin Buttes operation, later to become Anamax. The study has been documented as it occurred in hopes that it will illuminate the "people" side of computer systems implementation. Systems implementation involves negotiating with people. "The cooperative approach to negotiation (Nierenberg, 1968) the approach which vostulates that all varties must come away having gained something is based on a simple but important premise. Negotiation takes place between human beings. You cannot negotiate with a computer." This is a look at the human side of a major system installation. An attempt is made to show how a reporting system enabled a company to take a new look at itself. It is also an example of statements made by Toffler (1970) in Future Shock. "As machines take over routine tasks and the accelerative thrust increases the amount of novelty in the environment, more and more of the energy of society (and its organizations) must turn toward the solution of non-routine problems. This requires a degree of imagination and creativity that bureaucracy, with its man-in-a-slot organization, its permanent structures, and its hierarchies, is not well-equipped to provide."

The Kings Mountain area of North Carolina is the lithium pegmatite center of the U.S., if not of the whole world. We have two spodumene and by-product mineral producing companies, Lithium Corp. of America, and Foote Mineral Company. We also have Kings Mountain Mica and Kings Mountain Silica Companies producing mica. feldspar, quartz and clay from weathered pegmatites in that area. Figure 1 gives the location of the spodumene pegmatite area in North Carolina. The two spodumene producers mine typical pegmatite ore in open pits after removing amphibolite or mica schist overburden which is sold to aggregate producers. The ore reserves are discussed elsewhere in this session. They are in the order of plus 50 million tons but not unlimited. 1.2 The major minerals found and concentrated from the North Carolina spodumene pegmatite ores are tabulated on Table 1.
