The Sales Comparison Approach to estimating the value of a mineral property must always be attempted1 . In addition to other parameters, the approach depends heavily on the availability of transaction data. The consideration for the mineral property must be in form of cash, cash equivalent or other consideration. In other words, “What dollar amount did the property sell for?” Mineral properties are generally real estate, albeit frequently buried deeply under the overlying surface real estate, unless the property may be a quarry. In some states, transactions must be recorded in county courthouses, and the sale consideration must be included. In such cases, the appraiser’s job is made easy. In other locations, the sale considerations are withheld in the courthouse data; but occasionally a local transfer tax is collected and recorded. Again, the appraiser’s job is made easy by back calculation with knowledge of the legislated transfer tax percentage. The worst problem occurs when the consideration for a mineral real estate sale is totally withheld. That may occur in so-called nondisclosure states. Spray drying is the principal drying method used in the production of over six million tons annually of beneficiated kaolin in Georgia. Thirty-three dryers in the Georgia Kaolin belt comprise the highest concentration of large tonnage spray dryers in the world. The steady growth of spray drying in the U.S. kaolin industry is paced by advances in design and development of large spray dryers which have led to large scale new applications in mining and related industries.

State and federal regulations require that surface mine overburden be investigated in advance of mining for naturally occurring earth materials that are detrimental to animal and plant life or to uses of water. Proper identification of these toxic materials is necessary to permit development of environmentally sound reclamation programs. Intensified use of present laboratory methods to meet anticipated testing demands would be both costly and time consuming. This paper discusses the desirability of and general requirements for a geophysical system capable of locating toxic zones in the overburden of surface mineable lands of the Northern Great Plains Coal Province. The paper (1) identifies the types and character of naturally occurring overburden substances that must be investigated in advance of mining, (2) discusses the economic justification for development of a geophysical system to replace or to complement conventional laboratory test methods, and (3) discusses the potential applicability of downhole geophysical methods to overburden analysis.

This work was completed in a 440 KW pilot-scale combustor in preparation for a 50,000 Kg/hr industrial steam boiler limestone injection test program. The main objectives of the work were to: (1) identify the variables which affect sulfur capture, (2) determine the maximum sulfur removal, and (3) determine the effect of limestone addition on furnace operability and heat transfer. The variables which were identified as being important in sulfur capture were: Ca/S molar ratio, flue gas temperature at the limestone injection location, and limestone particle residence time. The maximum sulfur dioxide removal was 72%. The addition of limestone increased the particle deposition rate in the combustor; however, all deposits were easily removed by an air lance.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), a bureau within the U.S. Department of the Interior, has responsibility over both energy and non-energy mineral development on the United States Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) under the OCS Lands Act (“OCSLA”). BOEM’s Marine Minerals Program (MMP) manages federal offshore mineral deposits through non-competitive, negotiated agreements for sand and gravel (“sand”) used in coastal restoration efforts and the competitive leasing of critical and hard economic minerals (“critical minerals”). As the steward of OCS critical minerals, BOEM MMP is responsible for understanding where critical minerals are located, identifying and understanding their environments, managing activities that affect these resources, and implementing pertinent federal policies. Fulfilling these responsibilities involves the collection and analysis of environmental, geological, and geophysical data; supporting the science needed to understand the impacts of resourcerelated authorized activities on the biological, physical, and sociocultural environments; encouraging emerging technologies that can reduce the environmental impact of activities; and communicating with stakeholders to foster an understanding of existing federal regulations and potential needs to revise the legal framework. Four U.S. federal rules in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) currently inform MMP’s procedures: 30 CFR 580 (prospecting for minerals), 30 CFR 581 (leasing of minerals), 30 CFR 582 (operations in the OCS related to minerals), and 30 CFR 583 (negotiated noncompetitive agreements for sand). Other federal laws and regulations are also pertinent, particularly those supporting the National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, National Historic Preservation Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act, Coastal Zone Management Act, Clean Air Act, Federal Water Pollution Control Act, and Magnuson Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.

The design of the predriven recovery room is not an easy task, because the stress distribution in the barrier pillar, standing supports, fender pillar and the immediate roof is changing as the longwall face approaches the predriven recovery room. An analytical approach is proposed to determine the stress distribution in the barrier pillars, fender pillars, standing supports and immediate roof of the recovery room based on the fracture mechanics approach. Based on the developed mathematical model, a stand-alone computer program has been developed to facilitate the required computations. The parameters such as overburden depth, recovery room width, mining height, shield and standing support capacities are incorporated into this program to access the feasibilities of predriven recovery room designs. Compared to the finite element method previously employed, this analytical approach offers the same, if not better, accuracy without requiring expensive computer hardware and software or specialized expertise.

Since the late 19701s, the use of microcomputers in the minerals industry has grown to the point where today they can be found in virtually every plant within the industry. Their use in every aspect of instrumentation and control has increased the ease of operation and control of every phase of mineral processing. Their incorporation in sensors, transmitters, indicators, and controllers in addition to their use in distributed control and computer systems has provided operators with more timely accurate information than they have ever had before. This has led to an increase in the operator's effectiveness and an improvement in overall productivity. The ultimate aim of plant control is to maximize recovery in the mineral processing operation, and the microcomputer has spawned many tools that are now making this goal attainable. This paper discusses individual use of microcomputers in the areas previously mentioned as well as their collective use in overall control systems. The incorporation of local control systems in total plant control including the communication of information throughout all levels of plant management is also discussed. Finally the role the microcomputer is playing in today's plants is illustrated with numerous references to current examples.

The Langmuir model has been widely used for the coal-methane sorption process through an isothermal test. However, even though the temperature-dependent Langmuir model was recognized theoretically and experimentally, the quantitative relationships between the Langmuir constants a and b and temperature have not been clarified and confirmed by laboratory test data. This paper collects 158 methane-coal sorption data under different temperatures that apply the Langmuir model to the relationships between the Langmuir constants a and b and temperature. Even though the Langmuir model cannot be used to show the physical state of methane adsorption on coal, it is widely used because of its simplicity and the reasonable explanation of its parameters a and b. The results from these published isothermal tests indicate that (1) there is no consistent relationship between Langmuir constant a and temperature, (2) the Langmuir model is a temperature-dependent model whose temperature-dependent feature is mainly shown by the relationship between the Langmuir constant b and temperature, and (3) the relationship between the Langmuir constant b and temperature can be described by both exponential and linear relationships with dried coal. This paper provides a database for the temperature-dependent Langmuir model that can be used for the reservoir simulation of coalbed methane reservoirs and for the coal seam degasification modeling of underground coal mines, considering the heating effects induced by geothermal and heat injection through factors such as hot water, hot steam and ultrasonics.

In the past, Newmont Gold Company relied on cement for their ore agglomeration process. With assistance from Betz Industrial, Newmont began Investigating the use of polymers for ore agglomeration. If gold recovery would not be jeopardized, then polymers could replace cement and possibly reduce operational costs associated with cement agglomeration. The following outlines the preliminary testing conducted to determine the feasibility of polymer agglomeration with Newmont's ore and the results of the test heap, which was constructed so the program could be examined under actual operating conditions. Similar polymer agglomeration testing has been successfully performed in other Nevada gold operations. By eliminating the need for cement, a polymeric agglomeration program could improve material handling operations, as well as offer the following additional savings. First, the polymer application uses only lime for adjusting basicity, the polymer does not contribute any alkalinity to the heap. Because lime is more soluble than cement, detoxification of the heap becomes much faster and less costly for the mine relative to rinsing cement alkalinity. The following graph compares the detoxification rate of cement and polymer over a 33 day cycle.

Acid consumption in copper heap leaching is determined by the minerals present in the ore. Gangue minerals such as biotite and chlorite consume acid together with copper-bearing minerals such as chrysocolla and malachite. Acid consumption is affected by the rate of acid application and the particle size. Some gangue minerals undergo alterations and cause precipitate formation during acid leaching. Other minerals form due to precipitation as dissolved ion concentrations from a variety of mineral sources combine to exceed saturation levels. Copper recovery is related to all of these events. This study presents information on acid consumption of various gangue minerals as well as data for copper recovery from an associated copper ore.

ABSTRACT This study analyzed the publicly available health and safety policies of 26 mining companies to determine the quantity of health and safety (H&S) practices that mining companies encourage in relation to the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. A thematic content analysis of the policies identified elements and practices within the text. On average, companies communicated information on about 7 elements (range 1–14, standard deviation = 3.49) and discussed 15 practices (range 2–34, standard deviation = 9.13). The elements in which companies highlighted the most practices were risk management, emergency management, leadership development, and occupational health. A discussion of the policy trends shows areas that mine sites can improve upon within their Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, in addition to encouraging the use of both leading and lagging indicators to manage health and safety performance. INTRODUCTION Mining companies and their employees are expected to identify and manage risks at their worksites to ensure the health and safety (H&S) of everyone at the site. The primary mechanism in place to control these risks is a company’s health and safety management system (HSMS) (Boyle, 2012). Broadly, an HSMS is a set of standard, interrelated, and interacting elements used to promote and achieve occupational H&S goals (ANSI/AIHA Z-10, 2012; BS OHSAS 18001, 2007). The practices conveyed within an HSMS are expected to minimize incidents, injuries, illnesses, and even save worker lives (Alsop and LeCouteur, 1999; Arocena and Núñez, 2010). In the United States, both the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulate and encourage aspects of an HSMS (US Federal Register, 2011, 2010). Many HSMS documents (i.e., Chemical Industries Association, 1995; Health and Safety Executive [HSE], 1995; International Labour Office [ILO], 2001) attribute the source of their basic management system to Deming’s Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) model of continuous quality improvement and organize their practices within this cycle (Johnson, 2002). The PDCA cycle is a well-adopted approach in health and safety management and promotes continuous learning and adaptability (Robson et al., 2007)."

High-purity quartz (SiO2) is an important material widely used in many industries, including semiconductor technology, telecommunication, and optics. The content and distribution of impurities in quartz significantly affect the processing methods. This paper provides an insightful review on the processing of high-purity quartz, covering the analytical techniques, separation methods, and the critical procedures used to assess the quality of quartz ore. More importantly, the critical review of the thermal phase transition separation method for fine-grained mineral inclusions, micron-grade fluid inclusions, and lattice-bound trace elements is notably opened for the first time. It is proposed that the research field as a monopolized industry would benefit by expounding the critical problems that occur during the preparation of high-purity quartz.

Tailings (flotation waste) that is formed during copper production may be considered in the class of valuable wastes due to the amount of copper it contains. Owing to the decreasing grade values in copper ores, utilization of wastes such as tailings that carry certain amounts of copper as secondary sources has become a necessity in both the economic and environmental sense. This study investigated the usage conditions of five different ammonia salts as leaching reactants for the purpose of selective extraction of copper from tailings. For this purpose, the effects of parameters such as leaching temperature and leaching time were examined at different concentrations of ammonium hydroxide, ammonium carbonate, ammonium nitrate, ammonium chloride, and ammonium persulfate. The copper extraction efficiency in the case of using the aforementioned salts by themselves were listed as (NH4)2CO3 (73%) > (NH4)2S2O8 (69%) > NH4OH (64%) > NH4Cl (42%) > NH4NO3 (40%). The highest copper extraction efficiency was obtained in the leaching process that was conducted with the solutions obtained by mixing ammonia salts in the best conditions. The Los Angeles County Transportation Authority’s Purple Line Extension Phase 1 is a $3.12 billion (USD) design-build, underground heavy rail project, connecting an existing station at Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue and extending west 3.92 miles under Wilshire Boulevard and terminating approximately 550 feet west of Wilshire/La Cienega Station. The project alignment runs through the heart of the world famous La Brea Tar Pits and one of the world’s largest urban oil elds. This paper presents a case history of the planning, design, and construction efforts to achieve successful construction of the bored tunnels through Reach 3 of the alignment. Further, this paper outlines the proactive partnership between the owner, Los Angeles County Metro (Metro), the Design Builder, Skanska-Traylor-Shea oint enture (STS), and Southwest Geophysics who provided the geophysical services. Specically, the project included background review of historic site data (e.g., oil eld maps, building foundation plans, historic aerial photographs, etc.), geophysical demonstration testing to ascertain the capability of borehole magnetics to detect oil wells, directional drilling of thousands of feet of horizontal and vertical boreholes, collection of high resolution magnetic gradiometer data along vertically and horizontally cased boreholes as well as the collection of surface magnetometer data, discovery (“ground truthing”) of detected geophysical anomalies, and abatement of potential obstructions within the tunnel alignment.

In room and pillar mining a large number of working points are arranged to follow a mining pattern. Geological and roof control problems can be overcome or their effect minimized by varying this pattern. Longwall mining on the other hand, fixes the mining pattern for anyone panel. This aspect of longwall mining leads to constancy, so that a well-conceived organization, ventilation, dust and roof control systems lead to daily repetition and subsequent simplicity of control. All the same, a fixed mining pattern calls for a very careful consideration and selection of design parameters. (Ref. 1.)

[A great number of papers have been presented at various Engineering Society meetings on the Unit Train subject. Moat are descriptions of facilities that have been constructed or are abort to be built. Many describe the facility as being the World's fastest, newest, largest, incorporating the latest technology and so forth, Many are duplications of installations that have been recently constructed, sort of carbon copies but perhaps arranged differently. The trend has been to incorporate loop tracks, rotary dumpers, indexers and, of course, the snivel coupler equipped unit train. How that the energy crisis has increased the use of coal, there has been a tremendous Increase in applications for permits to construct rail to river coal loading facilities. This paper is different. It does not describe any single existing facility, but is given to alert prospective terminal owners and engineers that there are items that require considerable study and evaluation beside merely selecting an indexer, car dumper, stacker, ship or berg loader and so on. An important item is the selection of the railway car which in turn can affect the selection of the method of loading and unloading. Let us list a few of the items that should be considered and discuss the areas that require examination:]

With the rapid development of renewable energy technology, such as electricity reserves, to store energy for electric or electric vehicles, environmentally friendly energy sources are expected to continue to be fulfilled according to mobility and stationary energy needs. Lithium is the most attractive candidate for energy storage development. The presence of lithium in Indonesia in the Sidoarjo mud content is interesting to be used as an alternative source of raw materials. During the research, sulfuric acid acted as a solvent, and hydrogen peroxide acted as an oxidation agent. Lithium recovery will be studied using a leaching process at various temperatures (30, 45, and 60 °C) and sulfuric acid concentrations (0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 mol/L). The increasing temperature, sulfuric acid concentration, and hydrogen peroxide concentration will directly affect the lithium recovery. An increase in sulfuric acid concentration will be directly proportional to the recovery of lithium in the solution. Optimum conditions were obtained at varying 6 mol/L sulfuric acid concentrations and 60 °C temperature variations. The shrinking core model (SCM) studied leaching kinetics, and ash layer diffusion acted as a rate-controlling process. The activation energy of the leaching process was obtained at 38.90 kJ/mol.

The permeability in the blast furnace shaft is adversely affected by low temperature reduction degradation of sinters. The fundamental cause is an expansion of the iron oxide phase resulting from reduction of hematite to magnetite. The present study showed that expansion behavior during the hematite / magnetite reduction step and the resulting microstructure are strongly influenced by the reduction temperature (viz. partial oxygen pressure), the reducing agent and the nature of the hematite. The reduction rate is of minor importance. A reduction mechanism is proposed, explaining the dilation behavior and the magnetite microstructure. The results can provide better insight into reduction degradation behavior.
