Primary lead production using the lead blast furnace in conventional practice is carried out using sinter feed. At YMG, China, the sinter plant has been replaced with a lead ISASMELT furnace. The ISASMELT furnace produces lead bullion plus a high-lead slag, which is cast into lumps to provide a suitable feed for the blast furnace. In the present study the relative microstructures and reduction characteristics of industrial lead sinters and synthetic ISASMELT slag in CO/CO2 gas mixtures have been measured and compared. The microstructure and property changes, and the mechanisms of reduction in each case are examined and discussed. The results of the study are used to explain the successful implementation of cast slag feed in commercial ISASMELT- lead blast furnace practice. Comminution and flotation circuits are frequently perturbed by disturbances, such as feed particle size variations, ore hardness and varying mineral liberation, which can have a significant impact on the recoveries and grades. Although advanced control strategies can neutralize many of these disturbances, few such systems have been implemented at present. One reason is that it is only recently that the requisite sensor systems have been developed and used to control froth flotation systems. Another is owed to the complexity of these non-linear interactive systems. In this paper, a plant-wide control strategy is considered, wherein both unit operations have a single overall control objective. The automated design of the controller is based on an advanced evolutionary algorithm viz., Symbiotic, Memetic Neuro-Evolution (SMNE), for developing neural network controllers in a reinforcement learning framework. A rigorous phenomenological comminution and flotation model was used to develop suitable neurocontrollers, which used all possible sensor inputs and available manipulated variables. The neurocontroller managed to identify optimal or near-optimal operating conditions consistently and showed robust performance in the presence of significant disturbances. The results suggest that evolutionary reinforcement learning offers a very competitive approach towards the development of integrated non-linear controllers for mineral processing plants. Reference materials have always been important for validating and controlling analytical methods. They have recently become even more important as quality requirements have become more stringent and customer demands for properly verified and controlled results increase. Clients, especially from the resource exploration industry, demand critical validation of all results reported. Mintek has been producing geological and semi-processed ore references since the early 1970s and recently, due to increase in demand, other manufactures have entered the South African market. This paper describes analytical challenges from the customers? perspective, the customers being metallurgists, mine geologists, environmental scientists and geologists from resource companies. Reference materials with their appropriate use and a good understanding, can aid greatly in building confidence in the results, choosing the right laboratory for a project, deciding which set of results is correct and providing evidence to the customers? clients that the best possible results have been obtained

The bulk of high carbon ferromanganese produced in India continue to have more than 0.35% phosphorus since they are produced by carbothermic reduction process. The low phosphorus manganese ores are depleting fast and ferromanganese manufacturers will have no option but to use medium and low grade ores having high phosphorus content resulting in high phosphorus in the product. A systematic study was taken up at NML to solve this problem. Initially, a thermodynamic analysis was carried out for which Ba-P-O ternary predominance diagrams were constructed at several temperatures to predict the most suitable conditions for selective removal of phosphorus from high carbon ferromanganese. These conditions required a usage of a flux having a high level of basicity, moderate oxygen potential as well as low melting temperature. The experimental results showed that it was possible to remove phosphorus from high carbon liquid ferromanganese from 0.56%to 0.18% using BaCO3 based fluxes at the rate of 16-wt% of the ferromanganese charged. However, the Mn loss varied in the range of 2-5%. The objective of the subsequent study carried out at the laboratory scale was to optimize the flux consumption as well as minimize the Mn loss with effective dephosphorization by using BaO based calcined pellets instead of BaCO3 based powders. It was felt that the handling of pellets under plant conditions would be easier and also eliminate the loss of flux as a dust, which occurs when powder is added. These pellets were forced towards the bottom of the melt for better efficiency. For this purpose, a plunging system was designed and fabricated in-house that helped in reducing the flux consumption to less than 5% and also improved the kinetics of the process. The desired results were achieved within 10 minutes of the addition of the flux. The know-how is ready for transfer to interested parties and authors are willing to conduct large scale trials with them.

"SynopsisCalcined basic nickel carbonate (BNC) concentrate was smelted in a pilotscale DC arc furnace to produce a nickel metal. The furnace was continuously operated for 12 days (24 hour/day), during which twelve different smelting conditions were investigated, with the major variables being reductant type and feed rate, flux composition and addition, and BNC feed rate.The 200 kW DC arc furnace was operated at power levels between 110 and 165 kW and at a total feed rate of 78 to 96 kg/h, resulting in an average slag and metal tapping temperature of about 1650°C. A total of 7.2 t of BNC were smelted, producing about 5.44 t of nickel metal and 2.94 t of slag. Nickel recoveries of 96.4% and higher were achieved, and the slag nickel content was as low as 0.1%. The major impurities in the metal were iron (mostly from oxygen lancing) and carbon. The calculated feed carry-over was less than 0.85% and the graphite electrode consumption was between 2.8–3.3 kg/MWh.IntroductionOne of the most distinctive advantages of DC open-arc smelting is the ability to process fine raw materials without any major issues with regard to the operability of the furnace, metal recovery, and metal quality. This has been demonstrated in Mintek’s DC arc pilot plant facilities over a period of about three decades (Curr et al., 1983). The materials that have been processed include laterite (Kotze, 2002), chromite fines (Curr et al., 1983), manganese fines (Lagendijk et al., 2010), PGM concentrates (Shaw et al., 2013), electric arc furnace (EAF) dust (Denton et al., 2005; Abdellatif, 2002a) and stainless steel (SS) dust (Denton et al., 2005; Abdellatif, 2002a; Goff and Denton, 2004), and petroleum fly ash (Abdellatif, 2002b). The top particle size of such materials can vary from a few millimetres (e.g. laterite) to micrometres (EAF and SS dust). Dusting, whether due to physical carryover of feed or to the arc side reactions, has been proven to be a non-issue. As such, the applications of DC open-arc furnaces have the potential to be extended to other raw materials such as particulate nickel oxide, which has a particle size much less than 100 µm.Nickel oxide is typically produced from laterite ore by sulphuric acid leaching, purification, and precipitation as basic nickel carbonate (BNC) (Rhamdhani, Jak, and Hayes, 2008) or as mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) (Mackenzie, Virnig, and Feather, 2006), and finally calcining at moderate temperatures (800–1200°C). The NiO product is very fine, with an average particle size in the range of 10–20 µm and a NiO content of more than 99%."

Mr K.R. Beard was born on 19th December, 1958. He attended Marist Brothers College, Observatory, and Marist Brothers College, Linmeyer. He was awarded a bursary by SEIFSA (Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of South Africa) and gained the degree of B.Sc. Eng. metallurgy at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1982. He is a member of the Engineers' Society of South Africa. Mr G.A. Brown was born on 27th June, 1934, and matriculated at St John's College. He obtained the degrees of RSc. Eng. (Met.) at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1957, and M. Met. at Sheffield University in 1959. He is a member of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy (UK) and the Society of Mining Engineers (USA). Or LA. Cramer was born in the USA and, having received a B.Sc. degree in metallurgical engineering from the Colorado School of Mines, he emigrated to South Africa in 1971. He enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Natal and successfully completed both an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering.

An original concept of JRC-diagram that can evaluate JRC and its size-effect by using a fractal model was proposed. In order to confirm the applicability of the JRC-diagram, first, JRC of the tensile fracture surfaces of a granite and a sandstone were evaluated by both the JRC-diagram and Barton's JRC-profiles, and then, it was compared with the JRC inversely calculated from the peak shear strength that is obtained from the shear test for each fracture using Barton's empirical equation. As a result, JRC evaluated by the JRC-profiles was much smaller than the inversely calculated JRC. On the other hand, it became clear that JRC evaluated by the JRC-diagram is almost the same with the inversely calculated JRC, if the size of interlocking is evaluated correctly. Therefore, for the JRC evaluation, it is thought that the JRC-diagram is more applicable than the JRC-profiles. Als ein neues Verfahren zur Bewertung des Rauheitsindexes JRC für die Bruchfläche von Felsenschichten anhand eines fraktalen Modells, wobei auch der Maßeffekt berücksichtigt wird, wird ein JRC-Diagramm vorgeschlagen. Um die Angemessenheit der Bewertung vom JRC mit diesem JRC-Diagramm festzustellen, wurden die JRC-Werte an einer Bruchfläche zwischen Granit und Sandstein sowohl mit dem JRC-Diagramm als auch mit dem herkömmlichen JRC-Profilverfahren bewertet. Anschließend wurden die durch die beiden Verfahren ermittelten Werten mit den JRC-Werten verglichen, die von den Schertestergebnissen mit Hilfe von Bartonschen Erfahrungsformel zurückgerechnet werden können. Daraus ergab sich, daß das JRC-Profilverfahren ziemlich kleinere JRC-Werte gibt als bei der Zurückrechnung, während die JRC-Werte durch das JRC-Diagramm unter entsprechender Bewertung des Ineinandergreifungsmaßes an der Bruchfläche beinahe gleich sind wie die zurückgerechneten Werte. Diese Tatsache weist darauf hin, daß das JRC-Diagramm eine bessere JRC-Bewertungsmethode als das JRC-Profilverfahren darstellt. Nous avons proposé le diagramme JRC, nouvelle méthode d'évaluer JRC qui est un indice de rugosité superficielle d'une fracture de roche à l'aide du modèle de fracturation, compte tenu de son effet d'échelle. Pour vérifier la validité de JRC évalué au moyen de ce diagramme, nous avons évalué JRC d'une fracture de roche, granite et grès, par le diagramme JRC et le profil JRC, méthode conventionnelle, et les résultats ainsi obtenus ont été comparés avec la valeur de JRC calculée en sens inverse à l'aide de la formule empirique Barton sur la base des résultats de l'essai de cisaillement des fractures. Il en résulte que la valeur de JRC obtenue par le profil JRC était assez faible en comparaison avec la valeur calculée en sens inverse alors que celle de JRC obtenue par le diagramme JRC correspondait approximativement à la valeur calculée en sens inverse à condition d'évaluer l'échelle d'endentement d'une fracture. Par conséquent, nous considérons que le diagramme JRC est une meilleure méthode d'évaluation de JRC par rapport au profil JRC.

In an underground mine the ingress of heat can generally be attributed to two sources (Rock exposure and artificial mechanisms). The heat load relating rock exposure is subdivided into stoping [~40%] and haulages [~20%]. Rock is exposed to the ambient air and as a mine increases in depth the VRT (Virgin Rock Temperature) increases which leads to more heat ingress underground. To counter the heat ingress, especially in low-seam stoping areas of a deep level mine, air is, a) cooled artificially, b) the amount of rock exposed is reduced in the back areas of a stope by backfill applications, and c) ventilation air is used more efficiently. The heat reduction within a stope due to placed backfill could amount to ~50% for operations mining at a mean rock breaking depth of about 4500 mbc (metres below collar). Unfortunately, due to backfill transport methods, the physical fluid properties and application methods adopted, additional heat is induced into the air. The heat ingress due to backfill application could amount to as much as 25% of the overall in-stope heat load. This heat influx, seen as a negative aspect of backfill operations, is nevertheless overshadowed by the overall in-mine heat load reduction capability of about 20% attainable. The in-stope benefit [~50%] attainable from backfill operations could be increased with the incorporation of a heat exchange (cooling) methodology to offset the additional heat ingress into the surrounding air of a deep underground mine.

Zincor uses a Roast-Leach-Electrowinning circuit to process zinc sulphide concentrates. It also processes zinc oxide fume, originating from a slag smelting operation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Zincor achieved an average zinc recovery of 90.3% during the period January 2006 to May 2007. The bulk of the losses occurred in the iron and lead silver residues, both as soluble and un-dissolved losses. The un-dissolved losses in the iron residue constituted around 33% of the total zinc lost from the circuit, and were largely attributed to the presence of zinc-ferrite in the calcine used for neutralization during iron removal. As part of Zincor?s continuous improvement programme, the un-dissolved zinc losses in the iron residue were targeted by: the partial replacement of calcine with zinc oxide fume (from the DRC); and the preferential use of ?low-ferrite content calcine? as neutralizing agents in the iron removal circuit. These initiatives, coupled with other operational factors, resulted in a marked improvement in recovery to 92.6% during June to December 2007. The zinc oxide fume, directly fed to the circuit, required investigation of the halide rejection capacity of the Zincor circuit. Rejection of chloride via the magnesium bleed operation was considered adequate. Fluoride was mainly rejected via the iron (~70%) and lead silver (~27%) residues. Fluoride rejection via the lead silver residue varied significantly, probably as a result of variations in the sparingly soluble CaF2 content in the feed. The mechanism for fluoride rejection in the iron residues is uncertain. The fluoride rejection capacity of the Zincor iron residue (comprising of mainly jarosites, schwertmannite and ferrihydrite) at 2 ? 4 mg/L F in solution, was estimated at 0.14 ? 0.19 kgF/tFe residue.

Mineral resource evaluation and estimation process is not an exact science; however it depends on the knowledge and experience of the competent person and his ability to apply his mind, make reasonable assumptions, interpretations and exercise sound judgment in the mineral resource estimation process. The mineral resource evaluation results in a mineral resource statement are disclosed to investors. The minerals industry is presently undergoing rapid changes in legislation governing the public reporting of mineral assets. It has gone through different phases of development with respect to the reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves (mineral assets). In the past no reporting was done and currently mineral assets are reported as a supplementary section that briefly describes the mineral asset termed ?the mineral reserve and mineral resource statement?. The current industry trend appears to be going towards recognition and disclosure of the mineral assets on to the balance sheet. This paper explores the salient issues behind the mineral resources and mineral reserve statement of vein and reef deposits published in the public domain. It also highlights the potential misleading consequences of these issues and which filter through to the valuation of these particular mineral assets. The creation of reporting standards in the minerals industry has made significant inroads in standardizing and consolidating the interpretation and understanding of the different classification categories in the industry in an effort to promote common interpretation towards these salient issues.

INFACON conjures up many things for many people. For the fortunate few who have been actively involved with this event since its inception, it brings back memories of far places, stimulating debates and above all, the people who have over the years contributed to the outstanding success of the Congress and who have added to the wealth of knowledge on all aspects of ferroalloys. The International Ferroalloy Congress (INFACON) has been held every three years since 1974. INFACON X will be held in Cape Town in February 2004. Simple arithmetic shows that next year?s Congress should in fact be INFACON XI. Thus, one Congress was skipped. INFACON 74, as the name implies, was held in 1974, in Johannesburg, South Africa. The event was sponsored by the Ferro Alloy Producers? Association of South Africa (FAPA), the National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM - Mintek as it is known today) and the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM). You will see some of the same sponsors involved in INFACON X. Dr. Robbie Robinson, renowned academic and past president of the SAIMM, was the Chairman of the Organising Committee. The editor was Dr. Helen Glen. Anyone fortunate enough to possess a copy of the proceedings of this first Congress will agree that from a literary and technical perspective, it is still the benchmark for subsequent events. A unique feature of INFACON 74 was the use of rapporteurs (my first duty) to ensure that the discussions following the presentations were recorded (in direct speech) as accurately as possible. This involved time-consuming correspondence (can you imagine life before e-mail?) to all parts of the world between the author and the person posing the question, with the rapporteurs acting as go-betweens. It is understandable that the much-awaited proceedings only saw the light in 1975. The names recorded in the proceedings as the members of all six committees read like the who?s-who of the South African ferroalloy industry at the time: Dr. Peter Jochens, Mr. Harvey Reid, Mr. Piet Streicher, Prof David Howat, Mr. Sigurd Selmer-Olsen - to name but a few. The Congress was held in the new, very fashionable and upmarket Carlton Hotel in the CBD. In the Foreword of the proceedings, Dr. Robinson provides an insight into the event. Three hundred and thirty six delegates from twenty two countries attended the Congress, which was opened by the Honourable P.G.J. Koornhof, Minister of Mines. Again, the opening address makes fascinating reading. During the Congress an ad hoc committee was convened as the first International Committee on the Organisation of Ferroalloys Congresses, with representation from the main ferroalloy associations of the world. The following decisions were recorded: ? The Congress would be continued at three-yearly intervals under the name of INFACON ? Every third Congress would be held in South Africa ? NIM (Mintek) would provide the permanent secretariat. Six technical sessions were held, each preceded by a plenary address with a closing address by the session chairman. In all, thirty technical papers were presented. Prior to the closing address, a panel discussion on factors affecting the future of the ferrochromium industry provided stimulating debate in the form of a question-and-answer session. The hosting country for the next INFACON would be announced. Eventually, word got round that the next INFACON would be held in Japan. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the event was cancelled ? thus no INFACON 77. INFACON 80 was subsequently held in Lausanne, Switzerland from 12th to 16th October 1980. The event was organised by IFPEO, Institut des Producteurs de Ferro-Alliages d?Europe Occidentale. The Congress was officially opened by the President of IPFEO, Mr. R. Björklund, who was also President of the Organising Committee. The technical sessions were held in the Palais de Beaulieu. The Congress was well attended by 400 participants from 28 countries as well as 100 accompanying ladies. A total of four plenary addresses and 18 technical papers were presented. As with the first event, an international panel discussion (questions and answers) preceded the closing address. In his closing address, Dr. Louw Alberts, Chairman of the International Committee on Ferroalloys and President of NIM, presented an insight into the factors affecting growth in the industry and where growth was likely to take place. Twelve exhibitors had stands at the Congress. Attendees could choose from four post-event tours to Belguim/France (SADACEM/Compagnie Universelle d?Acetylene et d?Electro-Metallurgie), France (CUAEM), Finland (Outokumpu Oy) and Norway (Elkem Fiskaa plant).

Residual stresses observed in rocks often result from non-compatible initial strains. These stresses can be determined when the incompatibility tensor associated with the initial strain tensor is known. The residual stresses in a cylindrical rock sample can be computed the sample is considered small enough for its incompatibility tensor to be constant. Les contraintes résiduelles, dont on observe couramment les manifestations dans les roches, résultent souvent de l’existence de déformations initiales non-compatibles. Ces contraintes peuvent être calculées lorsque le tenseur d’incompatibilité associé aux déformations initiales est connu. Les contraintes résiduelles dans une éprouvette cylindrique sont données dans le cas où le tenseur d’incompatibilité est constant. Eigenspannungen, die man haeufig in Steinen beobachtet, sind oft Ergebnis einer inkompatiblen Deformation des Anfangszustandes. Diese Spannungen koennen berechnet werden, wenn der Inkompatibilitaets-Tensor der Anfangsdeformation bekannt ist. Die Eigenspannungen einer zylindrischen Probe werden fuer Fall eines konstanten Inkompatibilitaets-Tensor bestimmt.

Solvent extraction of Cu from acidic leach, using an oxime extractant, e.g. LIX 984 or Acorga is a well known and established process. As the process advances, Cu is extracted to the solvent and is replaced by H+ in the aqueous phase. At high acidity the distribution coefficient of Cu between the solvent and the aqueous phase decreases, and eventually relatively high concentration of Cu remains in the raffinate, regardless of the number of equilibrium stages. In many processes this phenomenon is immaterial, as the raffinate returns to the leaching and no copper is lost. But when the copper raffinate is used for processing of additional metals, minimal concentration of Cu in the raffinate is essential for an effective process. The recommended process includes three steps: 1. SX-1: Standard extraction of Cu with oxime. The resulting raffinate contains about 6-8 g/L Cu and 50 g/L H2SO4. 2. SX-N: Extraction of most of the acid into an amine-based solvent, and stripping it with a base, e.g. aqueous ammonia, caustic, Na2CO3 etc. The extraction removes no metals, but decreases the concentration of acid from 50 to 10 g/L. 3. SX-2: Extraction of the neutralized solution once more with oxime, to remove the residual copper. Such a process enables one to get down to 100-150 ppm Cu in the final raffinate. This process was developed and tested in the R&D facility in Chambishi Metals plc, by a joint team of Chambishi & Bateman, using Cognis LIX 984N and real solutions from the plant. In the laboratory scale, the equilibrium isotherms for SX-1, SX-2 and the neutralization were developed. Computer simulation of the results showed that the optimal configuration is two stages for both extraction and stripping for SX-1. For SX-2 2-3 stages of extraction and two stages of stripping are needed. The stripping stages may be common to both SX-1 and SX-2. The neutralization of SX1 raffinate was tested both by conventional precipitation with lime and by extraction with Alamine based solvent extraction and stripping with a solution of 10% NaOH. For the SX-N only one stage was needed for both the extraction and stripping. The bench scale pilot plant was run for both SX-1 & SX-2. The results were very similar to the simulated ones, and the configuration of 2E2S for SX-1 and 3E=2S for SX-2 delivered the required raffinate with less than 150 ppm Cu.

The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy hosted a School on 'The Practical Design of Comminution Processes' at Megawatt Park (near Johannesburg) on 14th to 16th May, 1991 Derek Barratt, a Senior Consultant of Wright Engineers, Canada, and the main speaker, provided a good insight into how Wright Engineers design milling circuits, particularly large semi-autogenous mills. He was ably assisted by Jens Lichterof Allis Mineral Systems, who described some interesting examples of pilot-plant testwork and summarized South African milling practice. Mike Moys of the Witwatersrand University spoke on the influence of pulp viscosity on mill performance, and Johan Engelbrecht and Jeremy Bosman of Multotech

Anglo Coal South Africa mines coal for both the domestic and export market using open cast and strip mining methods. To establish a mine, a process is set in place to gather ever increasing amounts of geological and metallurgical data to confirm a proven reserve. Increasingly, geotechnical data are also included in this process to confirm that reserve is easily and safely mineable. The mine design process is an iterative one using a combination of numerical modelling and empirical data to arrive at a mining layout that is both, practical, productive and safe. In South Africa it is a legal requirement to compile a code of practice to combat rock fall and slope instability accidents and these have to be revised annually, reinforcing the iterative process of continual improvement. To ensure best practise occurs, all Anglo Coal operations are subjected to annual 2nd party audits and ad hoc 3rd party audit by independent consultants. This paper attempts to explain the process described above in a concise, but understandable manner. 1.0 GEOLOGICAL SETTING The Ecca sediments date from the Permian period and the coal deposits were formed in glaciated valleys on a basement of Dolomite, Ryolite or Granophyre rock types. The sediments overlying the coal deposits are typically flat lying and multiple bedded. The sediments consist of mudstones, shales and sandstones and are generally capable of forming stable highwalls given the time that they must stand up for. Anglo Coal extracts coal from the Witbank, Highveld and Vereeniging coalfields. The Witbank coalfields contain five seams numbered from the base upwards, 1 to 5 Seam; Highveld coalfield the 2 and 4 Seam and the Vereening area the seams are described as Top, Middle and Bottom seams. Coal deposited over the basement Dolomite formation display very erratic dips, as contemporaneous subsidence occurred in some instances over sinkholes that were forming, resulting in local thickening of the coal deposit and resulting in strata that dips toward the centre of the sinkhole.

Many large caverns are being constructed in great depths in Korea mainly for the storage of oil and LPG. These caverns are mostly located near the port where rock conditions are reasonably good. In some instances, the horizontal stress is very high and endangers the stability of the cavern. The purpose of this study is to assess the stability of large caverns excavated in a rock mass with high horizontal stress where Ko value is close to 3. Result shows that stress exerted in the shotcrete at crown exceeds allowable value when the 3rd bench is excavated. Also found is the tensile failure of shotcrete near the boundaries between benches. In Korea werden viele grosse Kaverne fuer Aufbewahrung vom Oel und Fluessiggas in grosser Tiefe gebaut. Am Meisten befinden sich diese Kaverne in der Naehe von Haefen, wo der Fels gute Verhaeltnisse zum Bauen einer Kaverne besitzt. In einigen Faellen ist die Horizontalspannung sehr gross und dadurch wird die Stabilitaet vom Kaverne gefaerdet. Der Zweck dieser Arbeit ist die Stabilitaet des im Fels gebauten grossen Kavernes mit hoher Horiaontalspannung zu schuetzen, wo Ko-Wert sich auf 3 naehrt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Spannung im Spritzbeton an der Krone den zulaessigen Wert ueberschreitet, wenn das dritte Bank ausgegraben wird. Im Bereich des Spritzbetons zwischen Baenke wurde das Zugversagen festgestellt. Des larges cavités nombreuses sont en train d’être construites en grand profondeur en Corée prin-cipalement pour le stocage du pétrole et LPG. Ces cavités sont pour la plupart situées près de la porte oú les conditions des roches sont résonablement bons. En quelques cas, la contrainte hori-zontale est trés haute et met en danger la stabilité de la cavité. L’objet de cet étude est d’estimer la stabilité des large cavités excavées dans une masse de roche ayant une haute contrainte horizontale oú la valeur de Ko est proche à 3. Le résultat montre que la contrainte exercée dans le shotcrete à la couronne dépasse la valeur admissible quand le troisième banc est excavé. En plus une faillite en tension du shotcrete près de la frontière entre des bancs est trouvée.

Ticor South Africa is currently involved in the mining and processing of a heavy mineral oredeposit at Hillendale Mine on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast. The orebody is characterized by a high ultra fine fraction (-45µm) that has a variable rheological behaviour when subjected to shear and hydration. Experience at Hillendale has shown that the ultra fine mineral tailings are sensitive to shear history in terms of shear intensity and shear duration as well as hydration history. This phenomenon expresses itself right through the primary beneficiation process influencing the mineral separation, but is especially prevalent on the residue disposal i.e. slurry transport and deposition on the tailings impoundment. Tube viscometer test work was conducted on the flocculated fine tailings that indicated that there was a change in rheology as a result of shear. This paper presents the results of the on-site test work conducted at the mine to measure the rheology at various stages in the process.

This paper describes developments in ferro-nickel furnace technology, specifically improvements to cooling methods, furnace controls, and high voltage furnace operating regime. The evolution of these technologies is briefly presented, as context for describing the current state of the art that has enabled ferro-nickel furnace operation at over 75 MW and specific energy consumption of less than 400 kWh/t dry ore. Examples from existing operations are used to illustrate present best practices, and potential future trends are discussed. The paper begins with an overview of the fundamental aspects of pyrometallurgical treatment of lateritic ores that drive ferro-nickel furnace design. Furnace wall cooling methods are related to the requirements resulting from specific furnace process conditions, including slag and metal compositions, as well as arc and bath power. The benefits of high productivity and low specific energy consumption resulting from high voltage (shielded-arc) operating practice are discussed, along with the furnace controls and electrical power train that enable such operation even with captive power generation.

A computer program was developed to simulate transient strains and stresses during an overcoring in the situ stress measurement. The solution is based on superpositioning of elastic stresses. The measured strains can be compared with the calculated ones to check if the measured transient behaviour is accordant with the interpreted in situ state of stress. If not, the in situ state of stress can be calculated based on any transient or final strain values. The transient stresses can be compared with the strength envelope of intact rock and thereby estimate the core damage potential. Technically, the developed code fulfilled all the objectives, and the numerical error was found to be less than 5%. The basic idea can be applied also for different overcoring probes with minor modifications and recalculation of stress tensors. The analysed case studies showed clearly the advance of having an objective and practical quality control method to study the reliability of the in situ stress measurement data. The study was set up and funded by the nuclear waste management companies Posiva Oy ( Finland ) and Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB ( Sweden ). Un programme informatique a été développé pour simuler des tensions et des contraintes passagères pendant la mesure in situ de contrainte de surcarottage. La solution se fonde sur une superposition de contraintes élastiques. Les contraintes mesurées peuvent être comparées avec celles calculées pour vérifier si le comportement passager mesuré correspond à l'état de contrainte in situ interprété. Sinon, l'état de contrainte in situ peut être calculé à partir de n'importe quelle valeur de contrainte passagère ou finale. Les contraintes passagères peuvent être comparées avec l'enveloppe de force de roche intacte et ainsi il est possible d'évaluer le potentiel de dégâts au noyau. Techniquement le code développé a rempli tous les objectifs, et le taux d'erreur s'est révélé être inférieur à 5 %. L'idée de base peut être appliquée aussi pour différentes expériences de surcarottage avec des modifications mineures et le recalcul de tenseurs de contrainte. Les études de cas analysées ont montré clairement l'avantage d'avoir une méthode de contrôle de qualité objective et pratique pour étudier la fiabilité de données de mesure de contrainte in situ. L'étude a été fondée et financée par les sociétés de gestion de déchets nucléaires Posiva Oy (Finlande) et Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB (Suède). Es wurde ein Computerprogramm entwickelt, um Transient-Beanspruchungen und Spannungen während eines Überentkernens in situ-Spannung-Messung zu simulieren. Die Lösung beruht auf Superpositionierung von elastischen Spannungen. Die gemessenen Beanspruchungen können mit den berechneten Daten verglichen werden, um nachzuprüfen, ob das abgemessene Transient-Verhalten mit dem interpretierten in situ-Zustand der Spannung übereinstimmt. Wenn nicht, kann der situ-Zustand der Spannung auf irgendwelchen Transient- oder endgültigen Beanspruchungswerten berechnet werden. Die Transiet-Spannungen können mit dem Stärke-Umschlag des intakten Felsens verglichen werden und dadurch ein Kernbeschädigungspotential kalkulieren. Technisch erkannte der entwickelte Code alle Ziele und hat gefunden, dass die numerische Fehler weniger als 5 % waren. Grundsätzlich können auch verschiedene Überentkernen-Untersuchungen mit kleineren Modifizierungen und Wiederberechnung des Spannung-Tensors angewandt werden. Die analysierten Fallstudien zeigten deutlich den Fortschritt, objektive und praktische Qualitätskontrollmethode zu haben, die Zuverlässigkeit in Situ-Spannung-Messung-Daten zu studieren. Die Studie wurde aufgestellt und durch Atommüll-Management-Firmen Posiva Oy (Finnland) und Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB (Schweden) finanziert.
