Falkie summarized the following formal contribution prepared jointly with Dr R. V. Ramani, describing the work that has been done at the Pennsylvania State University in the development of simulation programs for mine planning over the past 15 years:During the late 50's and early 60's, Monte Carlo simulators were developed to model continuous miner-shuttle car transport systems, track haulage systems, belt conveyor networks, etc. In the mid-60's attention was directed towards deterministic simulation of equipment performance, given the equipment characteristics and the system profile. In the late (10's all these systems (miners, shuttle cars, belts and trains) were integrated together to form a complete coal mine simulator and the program could predict the output potential of the system, given the mining dimensions, method and equipment employed. The actual sequence of coal-cutting operations is entered into the computer through the use of a special programming language which permits any type of mining configuration to be simulated. The simulator is hybrid in nature in that the shuttle cars, trains and belts are simulated deterministically, whereas rate functions with delay frequencies are entered for the continuous mining operations of sumping, shearing, fleeting, cleaning, etc. With suitable manipulation of the data, the program may be applied to all belt or conventional mining sections. Most of these simulators were developed through the assistance of grants from the Department of Mines and Mineral Industries of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and are available from the Coal Research Board of the Commonwealth,"

Heavy mineral deposits have been known from Liberia since the1950s from both river and beach placers. The heavy mineral content of beach sands ranges between 28?62% and the suite includes ilmenite, rutile, zircon and magnetite. These occur together with kyanite, sillimanite, staurolite and garnet. The average ilmenite content is 82% with minor zircon (11%), rutile (6%) and monazite (1%). The ilmenite is, however, of poor quality with haematite intergrowths and a titanium content ranging from10?42.4% (average ±25% TiO2). The amounts of rutile and zircon, while of suitable quality, have also previously been deemed too low for economic exploitation.

Sishen Iron Ore Mine previously used only A-grade material (>60% Fe in situ value) from the pit for beneficiating in the DMS plant to a final product grade of 66% Fe in lump and 65% Fe fine ore. The B-grade (between 50% and 60% Fe) and C-grade material (between 35% and 50% Fe) were stockpiled separately, owing to the inability of the existing DMS plant to beneficiate material at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3. The ability to beneficiate the B-grade material at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3 was evaluated, and air-pulsed jigs were found to be techno-economically feasible and value maximizing. The beneficiation of B-grade material would add to the existing DMS production of 28 Mt/a, with no additional mining cost and only limited costs for the handling of waste and B-material. The objective of the Sishen Expansion Project (SEP), i.e. the jig plant, was to produce 10 Mt/a of saleable product with six modules to the set physical and chemical specifications by 2009. During the start of construction, it was decided to add another two jig modules to the plant to increase production to 13 Mt/a. During commissioning and ramp-up the shortcomings and advantages of the jigs were fully experienced and understood, resulting in many changes to optimize jigging performance..

Mintek developed the MinataurTM leach-solvent extraction-precipitation technology as a cost effective, easily operated alternative to conventional gold refining processes. The technology was first commercialized at the Harmony Gold Refinery in 1997 to produce 99.99 per cent gold product and has subsequently led to development of various value-addition steps including the casting of various investment bars, gold wire drawing and gold potassium cyanide powder production. In addition to refining gold to high purity, if an appreciable amount of silver is present in the feed material it is also refined to 99.99 per cent purity. The major advantage that the Minataur? technology has over other gold refining processes is the relatively low gold lock-up and reduced operating costs. The operating cost1as at April 2001 for the expanded Harmony refinery (24-ton per annum gold production) was approximately half that of conventional smelting and toll refining. The extractant employed for solvent extraction is relatively cheap and highly selective for gold, making the technology attractive in situations where significant quantities of platinum group metals or base metals are present.

Block caving methods, when operated under favourable rock mass conditions, can achieve higher production rates and lower operating costs than other various existing underground mining applications. For this reason, it has been considered the preferred method for the mining of deep and large orebodies in current and future operations around the world. One of the key aspects in the design of block caves is the selection of the production level layout, which, among other parameters, is based on the gravity flow characteristics of the caved rock. This is because gravity flow has a large impact on total ore recovery and the amount of dilution in a caving operation. Today, there are a number of computer based methods which aim to emulate the gravity flow pattern of the caved rock. In this paper, the authors present the development of FlowSiman improved model of gravity flow based on the cellular automaton approach, to estimate dilution entry, mixing and ore recovery. As part of the model development, flow simulations were conducted and subsequently compared to full-scale data collected at two mine sectors operated by Codelco Chile. The results indicate that by using proper calibrated parameters, good correlations between simulated and measured grades as well as dilution entry are obtained. The potential use of the numerical tool to evaluate drawpoint spacing in terms of recovery and dilution for block/panel caving operations is also presented.

"Mining companies globally are currently facing severe economic and financial challenges. In addition to global challenges, the South African mining industry has to face other operational challenges that are unique to the country and which threaten the survival and competitiveness of the industry. Profit margins are being squeezed by rising costs and decreasing commodity prices, while labour productivity is greatly affected by intermittent labour unrest. This paper analyses how the South African gold mining industry has performed pre-, during, and post the global financial crisis of 2008. The competitiveness of the industry in terms of labour productivity and industry cost curve position is analysed for the period 2006–2013 to assess the impacts of both the global financial crisis and labour unrest. An analysis of the South African gold mining industry is presented at company as well as mine level. Productivity measure in this paper is limited to labour productivity, in line with limited reporting on productivity. All the data analysed was obtained from the public domain. IntroductionSouth Africa dominated the world as the number one gold producer until 2009 when China took that position, and today South Africa ranks fifth after China, Australia, Russia, and the USA. According to Statistics South Africa (2009), South Africa still had about 30 years of production in the gold sector, a forecast that fluctuates based on the day’s modifying factors. Although South Africa has a comparative advantage in terms of minerals endowment, there are challenges faced by the mining industry that hinder translation of the comparative advantage into a competitive advantage. The industry continually seeks to address these challenges to remain competitive in global markets while addressing national and community needs.Neingo and Cawood (2014) argued that stakeholders in mining are continually concerned with mine management’s ability to translate use inputs effectively into quality outputs. They further suggested close monitoring of effective utilization of people, materials, and money to obtain maximum production of commodities under given conditions. This paper outlines a simple methodology for mineral characterisation, developed as part of the Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) managed research project P777 ?The Development of Heavy Suspension Techniques for High Density Separations (Replacement of Clerici?s Solution)?. The project was sponsored by De Beers, Rio Tinto and Iluka Resources. Heavy mineral characterisation of samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes is frequently conducted using laboratory heavy liquid analysis. Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of high density (?heavy?) liquids and these tend to be more toxic as their density increases. Low-toxicity inorganic solutions, based on tungsten compounds, have been developed that can be utilised at relative densities (RD) up to 3.0. Beyond this value organic liquids can be used, however this presents significant health and safety hazards. Diiodomethane (methylene iodide) having a relative density of 3.31 is commonly used. Mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate were found in the early 1900?s by Clerici to provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0. For the characterisation of the heavy components of mineral sand deposits (e.g. anatase RD 3.9, rutile RD 4.2, ilmenite RD 4.4 ? 4.7 and zircon RD 4.6 ? 4.8) there is currently no heavy liquid alternative to Clerici?s solution. Clerici?s solution is highly toxic and testing is now conducted by few laboratories worldwide with costs reflecting the chemical costs, infrastructure costs and health and safety regimes (e.g. blood testing of exposed staff). A simple laboratory technique of density fractionation has been developed, employing suspensions of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstates solutions, that can replace Clerici?s solution in the evaluation of fine mineral sands samples (e.g. -250 +150 microns). The developing methodology that can achieve low-cost, low toxic separations at relative densities above 4.0 is outlined and the comparison of results with Clerici?s solution presented. In addition, preliminary work on density fractionation of zircon samples is presented. Zircon fractionation relates to their inclusion, radionuclide content and metamictization.

Knowledge of the physical and chemical properties as well as the behaviour of the mould fluxes during melting, important in order to improve continuous casting operations. Lubrication and control of heat transfer in the mould are the more relevant functions of these materials. Values of physical properties like viscosity and surface tension at melting range temperatures are required, as much as the thermal behaviour under process conditions. The heat extraction from the liquid steel has an important effect in the final quality of products. Mould fluxes are constituted by different oxides, and may form glasses and crystal phases during cooling. The solidification rate and the chemical composition determine the proportion, type and crystalline morphology, which are responsible of the thermal transfer processes. In this paper, viscosity values are reported in the melting range temperatures calculated by means of the Riboud model and compared with fluidity results obtained by the inclined plane technique. Also the linear expansion of the mould fluxes at high temperatures was determined by dilatometry. The crystallization in two different fluxes was determined by DTA tests and correlated with the basicity index. Crystal phases were evaluated by scanning electronic microscopy on quenched samples at 1300°C. This information is relevant to increase the knowledge on the peritectic steel grades casting process in order to improve its quality. The aqueous chemistry of niobium and tantalum compounds with hydrofluoric acid is a mature field of investigation. In contrast, very little attention has been paid to reactions of these compounds in non-aqueous environments. Similarly, reactions of elemental fluorine with niobium and tantalum compounds have received little more than cursory attention in literature. This work discusses the isothermal reaction kinetics derived from thermogravimetry, using a less redundant approach than is currently the standard. We also discuss the most likely kinetic models for this reaction.

A number of countries have introduced codes governing the valuation of mineral assets and securities. The African continent will follow suit in due course considering the importance of the global minerals industry as it relates to the attraction of foreign investment. South Africa is to introduce the Petroleum and Minerals Development Bill legislating the involvement of previously disadvantaged individuals and communities in the country?s minerals industry. One of the challenges facing the successful implementation of such codes and bills lies with the abilities of independent valuators to value mineral properties and projects on a consistent basis. Certain valuation principles and methodologies are applicable in all jurisdictions in the minerals industry. These valuation tools and principles are considered and developed in this report. They have been discussed and developed to encourage minerals valuators to consider and consistently apply the most applicable valuation methodologies.

Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The purpose of this project was to identify constraints that could occur in the current sub-decline shaft at Turffontein Shaft should an increase in production take place. Particular attention was to be paid to the transportation of men and materials and to the broken rock and ventilation capacity of the shaft. This project is an in-depth evaluation of the logistic capacity of the sub-decline system at Turffontein Shaft in order to determine by how much production can be increased in this area to replace tonnages from the vertical shaft area, where ore reserves are rapidly becoming depleted.

Stirred milling technologies have firmly established themselves in concentrator circuits as energy-efficient alternatives to tumbling ball mills. High and continued increases in electricity costs, coupled with the ever-increasing power consumption by primary grinding circuits due to declining head grades of ore-bodies, provides a compelling case for these technologies. Additionally, the ability to successfully deploy stirred milling in coarse grinding applications extends the range of use in concentrators, thus increasing the opportunity matrix for energy optimization in a flowsheet. This paper therefore details methodologies and strategies that can be applied to evaluate the optimum stirred milling solution for different concentrator applications. These methods and strategies will focus specifically on the two major stirred mill machine types; namely, gravity-induced (VERTIMILL? grinding mill and Nippion-Eirich tower mill) and fluidized (SMD, Isamill?, Knelson-Deswik mill, etc. ). Finally, case studies from circuits across industry and laboratory tests will be used to illustrate the energy benefit from the use of stirred mills.

Premature coating failures of new and refurbished structural steelwork of clarifiers have been a common occurrence at power generation plant in recent years. Several of these failures have ended in disputes regarding which party was actually to blame for the early degradation of the coating system, i.e. quality of the power station?s water, poor application, substandard materials, outdated corrosion protection specifications, etc. Having investigated several of these premature failures, it is clear that the corrosion protection of clarifier steelwork is a highly complicated process and that the painting work needs to be closely monitored in order to ensure long-term protection by whichever product that is applied. The need for quality control inspections during the painting of the plant is often underrated during the project planning stage, also the importance of detailed corrosion protection specifications that consider not only the practical application of the materials, but also the quality control responsibilities of the Contractor, End User and Third Party Inspectorates that may be involved. This paper considers the application constraints of coatings to clarifier structural steelwork and importance of stringent quality control procedures in order to ensure the long-term performance of the corrosion protection systems.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, Namakwa Sands, ilmenite, DC arc furnace, titania slag, pig iron Namakwa Sands is a heavy minerals mining and beneficiation business in the Anglo Base Metals Division, and operates along the West Coast of South Africa. The business encompasses mining, mineral concentration, separation, and smelting operations. The smelting process comprises the carbonaceous reduction of ilmenite to produce titania slag with a TiO2 content of 86%, and iron with a carbon content of 2.5%. The Namakwa Sands smelter, situated near the Saldanha Bay harbour, commenced smelting operations in 1994, when a 25 MW DC arc furnace was commissioned. The smelting operations were expanded in 1999, with the commissioning of a second 35 MW DC arc furnace. Despite the fact that ilmenite smelting poses a technical challenge in terms of the high temperatures required, the physical characteristics of the slag, the constraints placed on the feedstock, and the tight product specifications, Namakwa Sands has continually increased slag production since 1995. High furnace feed-on utilisation and furnace stability, complemented by continuous improvement drives, will be the vehicle to drive performance in the short term, with longer-term performance enhancements due to strategic process development.

The key aspects of process metallurgy that distinguish platinum group metal (PGM) concentrate smelting from that of other base metal sulphide concentrates are presented. These differences include considerably higher input chrome and magnesia contents that directly raise the slag liquidus temperature and have the potential to increase accumulations of refractory spinels. Most importantly, the higher processing temperature required for PGM smelting, and the resulting very high matte superheat lead to considerably more onerous smelting conditions than those typical of other smelting operations. This has presented challenges to furnace design and integrity, especially when coupled with the progressive intensification of smelting, involving doubling, and then redoubling, of furnace power input over the past 20 years. These power increases have been enabled by increasingly more advanced furnace cooling and structural technologies. Key technologies include strong constant-force spring-loaded bindings acting in three dimensions to minimize infiltration of superheated matte into brick joints, and robust well-cooled tapholes for reliably tapping the superheated matte. The result has been substantially improved productivity, and reduced smelting capital cost outlay per unit of production. A significant challenge that was not anticipated, presented itself in the form of insidious corrosion of the furnace lining, and especially high-intensity copper cooling elements. Investigation of corrosion in related industries eventually identified 'chloride-accelerated sulphidation', and this term has been retained as it generically describes the most pertinent aspects of the accelerated low-temperature wear of copper coolers observed in PGM smelting. In addition to discussing the corrosion mechanism, this paper describes a number of solutions that were developed jointly by Anglo American Platinum and Hatch to address the copper corrosion problem. First, new monitoring technologies allowed furnaces to be operated more safely for a longer period of time. Second, a system for replacing corroded coolers from outside the furnace during a fast 'hot' shutdown minimized the impact on furnace operating factor and hearth life. Finally, a corrosion-resistant graphite-protected cooler design significantly improved furnace campaign life, and heralds a more lasting solution to cooler corrosion in PGM furnaces.

Rock engineering is concerned with the design of rock structures generated by mining activities. Therefore, rock engineering designs have major implications for the safe recovery of mineral deposits and operating costs. The paper deals with a few challenges facing rock mechanics engineers operating in the hard rock underground mining environment in South Africa. Finally, examples are included, which may assist rock mechanics engineers in providing better designs, which could ultimately lead to further improvement in safety and lower operating costs.

The separation performance of a raw coal sample from South Africa based on the dense gas-solid fluidized bed beneficiation technique was investigated. Analysis showed that the raw coal sample distributes mainly in the -50+6 mm size range with the -1.6 g/cm3 density fraction accounting for 78.20% of the cumulative mass distribution. A flow sheet of the sequential coal beneficiation technique was introduced. The experimental and simulation results of the hydromechanical and density distribution stability indicate that the dense gas-solid fluidized bed could provide a stable separation environment with uniform density fluctuations under suitable operating conditions. With the application of this technique on the raw coal sample, the separation results show that three products, consisting of 73.25% clean coal with an ash content of 9.59%, 11.31% middlings, and 15.44% gangue were effectively separated at two different densities of 1.82 g/cm3 and 1.57 g/cm3. This study provides an effective flow sheet for achieving the high-efficiency separation performance on raw coal from arid areas.
