The hydroelectric project "El Cajón" is currently under construction in the state of Nayarit, on the Santiago River, in western Mexico. This project is comprised of a Concrete Face Rockfill Dam (CFRD) with a rockfill necessity of 10,5 million cubic meters and it reaches a height of 188 m. The generation equipment includes two turbines with a total installed capacity of 750 MW.

The Avalauncher has been an integral tool for avalanche mitigation work for close to 50 years. With their ability to place a kilogram of high explosives up to two thousand meters away, they routinely serve as a short range alternative to military artillery. The Avalauncher’s roots can be traced to a pneumatic baseball pitching machine used by Major League Baseball teams in the United States in the late 1950s. Throughout the decades, many modifications have been made to both the launcher and its projectiles. Current technology has allowed the Avalauncher to attain greater accuracies and operational range. In this paper I plan to cover not only the history of the Avalauncher but also explore its potential future.

Blasting techniques and protective measures exist that can mitigate risks associated with flyrock and the nuisance of vibration, and overpressure. However, these are often misused or not used because there are no prescriptive regulatory requirements and typically urban blasting guidelines do not exist. The relationship between the increasingly negative publicity that the urban blasting industry receives and the existing state of regulatory control on blasting in urban environments is presented.

Prairie Mines & Royalty Ltd. produces over 12 million tonnes annually of thermal coal for TransAlta’s Sundance and Keephills power stations from the Highvale Mine. This opencast mine is next to a lake and is surrounded by cottages and farms, which means that blast vibrations and air overpressure have to be kept to a minimum.

A series of small-scale crater tests were performed in concrete and sand in an effort to understand the cratering process in large-scale field blasts. The surface orientation of these tests varied from flat to a 30° slope. In comparison to previous crater experiments in competent oil shale, the crater tests in concrete produced craters similar to those in oil shale after scaling the measurements for differences in the mass of explosives among the experiments. Material strengths and the degree of brittleness had a significant effect on the size and shape of the crater. The small-scale sand tests resulted in some crater features that were similar to large explosive tests in alluvium and soil.

Production blasting is a process of destruction of rock masses in order that ore may be extracted. Many open pit operations are faced with the apparently conflicting requirements of providing large quantities of fragmented rock for the processing plant and of minimizing the amount of damage inflicted upon the surrounding pit slopes. A reasonable compromise between these two conflicting demands may often be found by means of simple engineering of production blasts.

A blast monitoring program conducted at Chemical Lime Companys new lime calcining facility near Ste. Genevieve, Missouri is discussed. The purpose was to develop blasting criteria for the construction and operation of the lime plant within the quarry operated by Tower Rock Stone. Further, it was imperative to accommodate production requirements into the blasting criteria. The major concern was the effect of blasting on the curing of green concrete during the construction of the storage silos and kiln stacks. In addition to discussing the susceptibility of curing concrete to blast vibrations, the paper also details how this varies with time.

Developers and blasters are faced with increasing public demand and regulatory restrictions to maintain the lowest possible levels of noise and vibration from blasting operations in populated urban areas. Pyrotechnic products have proven to be a low noise, low vibration alternative to conventional blasting for close-in rock excavation and concrete demolition applications. Pyrotechnic breaking charges often yield 1/10th the vibration and noise compared to traditional explosives, and have been demonstrated to increase public confidence and decreased damage potential where they have replaced explosives, thus allowing new opportunities for work and greater job profitability. This paper presents a practical approach to utilizing pyrotechnic products in various applications including trenching, mass excavation, demolition, and dimension stone production, providing methodology for pattern design, vibration probability and loading calculations. Field research data is reviewed and compared to conventional explosives.

This study is based on a six month study performed for Lee County, Florida. The study was based on blasting for land development and how this type of blasting affects structures. The study is investigates peak particle velocities and the relationship to other environmental and manmade forces that affect structures. The study also explores the effect of geology on blast vibration. After completion in Lee County, the study was then continued in the quarry environment in Vermont and extremely tight blasting environment of New York City. Charge diameters were 127mm (5 inches) or less.

Recently promulgated regulations governing blast induced ground vibrations in the mining industry contain a frequency criterion as one option for verifying compliance. This criterion is based upon an oversimplified method which assigns the entire peak particle velocity amplitude to one frequency. Depending upon the nature of the vibration time history, it is possible that this frequency may not even be one of the predominant frequencies of the signal. In addition, the criterion does not specifically define the data analysis approach to be used by the industry for obtaining either the amplitudes or the frequencies of the vibration components. And because personnel in this industry generally have little understanding of vibration phenomena, a number of different approaches are currently being used for satisfying the criterion. This paper presents a method for obtaining both the Fourier amplitude-frequency spectrum and the integrated predominant amplitude-frequency components for the vibration record. The method is both physically and mathematically correct and is in common use in a number of other industries. Therefore, it should be of help to regulators, blasters, and consultants charged with developing, enforcing, or implementing ground vibration criteria.

It is widely recognised that complaints from members of the public relating to blasting operations are related to both ground vibration and air overpressure. It is also known that a complaint is more likely to be generated if the person is inside of a structure at the time of the blast. Reports relating to such complaints often refer to ‘noise’ inside the structure with terms like ‘rattling’ commonly being employed. Such acoustic response is widely perceived within the blasting industry to be directly related to high levels of air overpressure although there appears to have been very little research carried out specifically related to this effect.

The drill and blast process is a critical function within the production cycle which significantly impacts the ability of an operation to effectively meet its safety and production targets. Acknowledging that D&B design and reconciliation practices were conducted inconsistently across operations, a Group wide initiative was launched to embed a standardized design and reconciliation platform in line with the company’s Operating Model principles. A technical system was selected to deliver the digitalization of critical D&B information and enable ‘analyze and improve’ routines for design compliance monitoring and downstream productivity optimization.

An automated, centralized, image-based rock fragmentation analysis system provides blast engineers with the benefit of minimizing tedious and mundane work, and allows them to focus on their expertise of blast optimization. In typical manually-operated image-based rock fragmentation analysis, much time is spent on collecting proper images, handling and transferring data, and processing for fragmentation.

Drill and Blast (D & B) is one of the main operations in the mining production cycle, which aims to fragment rock according to a pre-defined plan for proper loading, haulage and processing specifications. In this sense, data from a Brazilian iron ore mine was analyzed, given emphasis on blasthole length, subdrilling and stemming. The D & B report, including mining data such as number of blastholes, length, and diameter and stemming aspects, was analyzed in order to be able to compare these results with the blast design. The study showed significant differences between the designed blasting pattern and that one obtained by the operation. As a consequence, problems such as inadequate fragmentation, incorrect size distribution and loss of energy, were identified. For example, when stemming has a different length than it should have, noise and flyrock can occur, including inadequate fragmentation and vibration in both situations. Therefore, a comparison between the usual D & B procedures and recommended D & B design based on literature reveals the most important deviations and their consequences. The study intends to identify solutions for simple problems, improving D & B operations and safety practices.

The DMC_BLAST (Distinct Motion Code) has been developed to model rock motion and displacement during the gas expansion phase after the detonation of an explosive in a borehole. Recently, a designated delay firing order algorithm was written into the DMC_BLAST code. The model can now be used to analyze rock mass displacement for a V-cut, center opening, or sinking cut initiation sequences. This new feature allows the investigation of the effects of delay firing order on rock displacement when blasting complex inter-bedded and ore-waste structures. The model provides important ground movement and mixing indicators for dilution control in surface gold mining relative to the initiation sequences employed. Echelon blasts as compared to center opening type blasts show differences in their internal muckpile displacement. These displacement differences can be important to operations that mine narrow strike driven ore bodies. The model also has applications to through coal seam blasting and demonstrates that down-dip blasting is a better alternative than up-dip blasting. There is less disturbance to the dipping coal seam and less mixing of the rock and the coal.

The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SD Mines), located in Rapid City, South Dakota, is one of only a few universities in the United States that offer a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering. The Department of Mining Engineering and Management (MEM) at SD Mines teaches courses that introduce students to concepts related to mining, including a course covering explosives engineering. Students are taught the basics of explosives theory and application in the mining and construction industry through a series of lectures and assignments. With limited field experience, many students find some topics difficult; these include: flyrock, ground vibration, timing, and others. Some US mining schools have an experimental mine in which they can simulate field conditions and conduct hands-on training, but not all universities have such facilities. For those without, teaching certain concepts can be more challenging in a pure classroom environment. To counteract the lack of an experimental mine, the mining department at SD Mines implemented Paradigm (Version 18.4.4984.0; McKenzie, 2017) a computerbased blast modeling software to improve the learning environment.

Photos 1 - 4 – Chris Elliott is a rock slope supervisor on a construction project east of Seattle, Washington. His job is to look after a “two man” scaling crew working on the rock bluffs some 300 feet in height along the I-90 interstate just east of the town Hyak. The Washington State Rock Engineers noticed a very large mass of unstable rock along the upper rock face and asked us to take it out. Chris is loading explosives in 1½" ” holes that are 8 to 10 feet deep by 40 feet long with 1¼” x 8” power primer on the unstable rock mass that is about 300 feet above the new road construction. I-90 runs east and west longside the new construction note the containment fence and the ship containers along the highway for protection and Lake Keechelus in the background.

The restrictions imposed by the Brazilian environmental legislation regarding natural caves lead to a block of substantial amount of mineral reserves. Mining activities can released caves, as long as the company ensures that the activities will not cause any damage to them, requiring profound and time-consuming studies. Since the use of explosives in the mine are potential sources of some damage to any structures, it leads to a deep need for controlling the rock blasting activities. In this context, the maximum charge per delay used in operations close to cave regions must follow some internal blasting assumptions that have been developed during specific tests and mining activities. By the seed wave technique, it is possible to determine the behavior of a seismic wave, which travels through a rock mass and it is generated by blasting a known explosive charge. This technique has proved to be an effective tool because it is able to accurately include the physical characteristics of the rock and different lithologies. This paper discusses about modelling blasting induced vibrations in order to improve caves protection, which surround the mining operations.
