"Platinum Australia Limited (“PLA”) is currently undertaking a Feasibility Study into the development of the Panton Platinum Palladium Project located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The Panton Intrusive is a layered, differentiated mafic to ultramafic structurally complex body that has undergone numerous folding and faulting events. This has resulted in a southwesterly plunging synclinal structure some 10 kilometres in length and 3 kilometres wide.High grade PGM mineralisation is hosted within a number of stratiform chromitite reefs within the ultramafic sequence. The focus of the Feasibility Study is on the Top Reef which is situated approximately 150 metres below the mafic/ultramafic interface. The average true width of this reef is approximately 1.2 metres and the reef has a defined resource is 10.1 million tonnes at an average grade of 6.1 g/t PGM + Au.The Palladium to Platinum ratio of the Top Reef is approximately 1.15:1 and the reef also contains an average of 0.4 g/t Au and 0.3 g/t other PGM’s. The Panton ore is considered refractory in nature and standard flotation techniques achieve a PGM + Au recovery of less than 65% with a concentrate grade of less than 100 g/t PGM + Au. As part of the Feasibility Study Platinum Australia in conjunction with their major shareholder Lonmin Plc developed a new metallurgical process which has achieved an overall PGM + Au recovery of approximately 80% into a high grade PGM concentrate which is suitable for feeding direct to a PGM refinery.THE PANTON PROCESSThe Panton Process incorporates a two-stage Milling and Flotation circuit with no cleaning stages to produce a low grade, high recovery flotation concentrate. Typically the concentrate mass constitutes 25% of the feed and has a PGM + Au grade of 25 g/t.This low-grade concentrate is subjected to calcination in a rotary kiln or fluid bed at a temperature of approximately 400 0C for a period of 60 minutes. This step is designed to render the platinum minerals soluble in cyanide and both the temperature and the duration of calcination are critical to the efficiency of the leaching process."

"Coal-fired electrical power generation plants produce 56% of all the electricity in the U. S., burning approximately 860 million tons of coal annually. This results in production of 58 million tons of fly ash; 19 million tons of bottom ash and boiler slag, and 23 million tons of desulfurization sludges. These are a considerable disposal problem, and it would therefore be very valuable to be able to sell these residues and byproducts as useful materials, rather than paying to dispose of them in landfills. However, utilization rates are currently very low, below 32% even for the most thoroughly commercialized combustion byproduct (fly-ash). This poor utilization rate is a result of the high impurity content of combustion byproducts, which make them unsuitable for existing markets. The experiments described in this paper were therefore carried out to study the application of mineral processing techniques to upgrading combustion byproducts.Experiments were conducted to upgrade and purify low-grade combustion products to produce highgrade, readily saleable materials. A process was developed for removing unburned carbon from coal fly-ash by froth flotation, using reagents originally developed for flotation of oxidized coals. This technique could reduce the carbon content of fly-ashes containing up to 11.1% carbon to less than 2%. The froth product was sufficiently carbon-rich that the recovered carbon has value as fuel, or as low-grade activated charcoal.Fly ash was also examined as a binder for producing iron ore pellets, primarily as a substitute for bentonite. It was found that Class F fly ash in combination with an activator (calcium hydroxide) was an effective pellet binder at dosages comparable to the currently-used dosages of bentonite clay. While the flyash worked very well alone, tests in combination with bentonite showed that fly-ash/bentonite mixtures had significantly worse binding performance than either pure bentonite or pure fly-ash-based binder. This was determined to be due to the fact that bentonite and fly ash have profoundly different binding mechanisms, with fly-ash undergoing a pozzolanic chemical reaction while bentonite binds through a physical attachment process."

Column flotation is being widely adopted for fine particle treatment by the mineral processing industry due to its simplicity of structure, high efficiency and good separation performance. Cyclonic static micro-bubble column flotation (FCSMC) is an innovative column separation technology that has been successfully applied in the coal preparation industry in China. Recently, the application of this equipment has been further expanded to the separation of several minerals such as fluorite, copper, iron, etc. The bottom of the FCSMC is a cone in which cyclonic field is generated when circulating pump is injected tangentially into the column. The unique cyclonic structure is believed to help enhance the column separation performance. Since the FCSMC is a new flotation device, little work has been done to understand the fundamentals of this technology. In this research, a computational fluid dynamics software, ANSYS/ FLOTRAN, was employed to simulate the flow field of a lab FCSMC system (F0.2 m, F3.0 m by length.) The distribution patterns for velocity field and flow field were investigated under single phase condition. It has been found that axial velocity of the slurry decreases and becomes stable along the height of the column from bottom to top, and the slurry performs as a descending flow pattern. Another observation is the velocity fluctuates vigorously near the wall due to wall effect. Compared to axial velocity, the radial velocity distribution is smaller and more complicated. The basic pattern is that on a given cross section of the column radial velocity increases from the wall to the center and it the velocity changes greatly around the center. Under the condition of column height less than 0.8 m, the axial velocity is negative and it directs from the wall to the column axis. When column height is higher than 0.8 m a reverse pattern is obtained, i.e., axial velocity is positive while directing from column axis to the wall. Special efforts were directed to investigate the tangential velocity pattern. Results indicate that the tangential velocity patterns of different cross sections are similar and showed a symmetrical distribution. Tangential velocity distribution concluded two zones: outer whirlpool and inner whirl-pool. And, interestingly, it has been found that on different cross sections the highest tangential velocity always occurs at the same position of the cross sections.

"The Talnakh Concentrator was put into operation in 1981 using a direct selective process to produce copper, nickel and pyrrhotite concentrates.In 2001, a novel selective-bulk-selective (SBS) technology for the concentration of massive sulfide ore was implemented, that allowed to increase the valuable components recovery into target concentrates with feedstock grinding coarser than before. In 2003-2005, the process upgrading included the differentiated processing of nickelpyrrhotite products recovered at the different concentration stages and made it possible to significantly enhance the contrast of the pentlandite and pyrrhotite flotation properties and to simultaneously increase separation of polymineral intergrowths.The next stage of the PD concentration complex development is the Project ""Talnakh Concentrator Reconstruction and Technical Upgrading"" to raise its capacity by half. The project has three Phases.• Phase 1. Pilot startup was carried out in January 2015 following the installation of new OK-100 TC flotation machines, manufactured by Outotec.• Phase 2. The introduction of a new technology developed by the Polar Division specialists launched in mid-2016. The new technology is based on maximization of iron and sulfur removal into tailings and maintenance of non-ferrous and precious metals losses at the same level.After the realization of Phase 3, the annual capacity of the Talnakh Concentrator will raise by another ~ 40% at the expense of processing cuprous and disseminated ores currently being processed by the Norilsk Concentrator.By 2023, due to upgrading of the PD production facilities the emissions to the atmosphere will reduce by 75%.Polar Division of PJSC MMC Norilsk Nickel (PD) searches for the ways to solve its environmental issues. Thus, in 2016, the Nickel Plant was shutdown and a new flowsheet was introduced at Talnakh Concentrator. It resulted in the reduction of sulfur specific amount sent to pyrometallurgical processing as a component of the concentrates.The Talnakh Concentrator was put into operation in 1981 using a direct selective process to produce copper, nickel and pyrrhotite concentrates.In 1981, its design capacity for processing of Cu-Ni ores from Oktyabrsky and Taimyrsky Mines did not exceed 3 million tons per year.In 2001, a novel selective-bulk-selective (SBS) technology for the concentration of massive sulfide ore was implemented at the Talnakh Concentrator, that allowed to increase the valuable components recovery into target concentrates with feedstock grinding coarser than before."

"The extent and nature of the damage to diamonds at processing plant is largely determined by the design features of the equipment, the characteristics of the feed ore and the parameters of the ore disintegration process (change in the rotational speed of the autogenous mills, variations of the water supply to comminution process, choice of the optimum charge, etc.). To monitor the intactness of diamonds, an instrumental method using the X-ray tomography system and colored synthetic indicator diamonds was developed for identifying the process-related damage. The X-ray tomography system consists of a CT-Portable X-ray tomographic scanner, a crystal positioning device and customized software (developed by the Fraunhofer Institute and Aliud GmbH, Germany). The developed method enables improvement of the accuracy of the results, exclusion of the subjectivity of the mineralogical assessment, acceleration of data processing and promptly planning of the activities aimed at reducing the process-related damage to diamonds. INTRODUCTION Industrial tests of ore processing technology at the enterprises of ALROSA PJSC are accompanied by assessment of the process-related damage to diamonds. The assessment of the process-related damage to crystals is carried out for prompt elimination of factors contributing to the increase of impact forces in the process flow sheet of ore treatment plant. For this purpose a specially selected parcel of -4.0 + 2.0 mm sized natural indicator diamonds is used. The diamonds are exposed to ionizing radiation in order to turn them green and thus to create a distinctive feature. Colored natural indicator diamonds are described, photographed in several views and introduced into the process flow sheet of the processing plant, then extracted from the process flow, described and photographed again. The comparison of diamonds before and after their passing through the process flow sheet of the plant allows to find evidence of process-related impact on the crystal and to calculate the factor of process-related damage (the number of crystals damaged during liberation and recovery), the loss of crystal weight and the degree of damage to the crystals. The method of colored indicator diamonds is used to select processing methods, equipment or regime which would be the safest for diamonds based on the analysis of the factors of process-related damage. "Flotation of metal-organic precipitate in column is sensible to the hydrodynamic conditions determined by the diameter and dispersion of rising bubbles. Thus, the dissipation energy in the system resulting of ratio between superficial fluid velocities (gas and feed) in the column is main parameter for precipitate flotation in pilot or industrial scales. The knowledge of aggregate structure can lead to better understanding and control of many solid-liquid separation processes (sedimentation, filtration, thickening and flotation). Many authors highlight the importance of structural properties (i.e. floc density) for different industrial applications.This approach was applied to achieve the flotation of molybdenum precipitate obtained with organic collector a- benzoin oxime for molar ratio 1:2. Flotation tests were carried out at lab and pilot scale with rigorous control of the size distribution of bubbles and the values of dissipation energy in the systems.Structural evolution of Mo precipitate and the destruction phenomenon were described by using of the various fractal dimensions, which were deduced from experimental data of laser sizer devices and optic microscopy pictures of precipitate. The boundary fractal dimensions Df of large aggregates allows the detection of a structural scaled organisation of the precipitate flocs (elementary germs-microflocs-flocs). The fractal dimension of the particle mass distribution Dm=1.94+/-0.15 suggests, for the floc structure, a cluster-cluster aggregation process either with structuration or breakage phases.The destruction process characterised by a fractal dimension Dg controls the final size distribution. The floc destruction occurs for the lowest values of the dissipation energy (0.02 – 0.05 W/kg). The relation between Dg and the system dissipation energy Et (for various energy E dissipated in the agitation cell) involves the different breakage mechanisms of aggregates in function of the aggregation bonds (Fig. 1).Besides, the destruction of floc produces very fine particles (elementary germs or/and microfloc according to E), and thus induces the difficulties of bubble-particle attachment during the precipitate flotation in column. Yet, very small bubbles, which increase the collision probability, would make the flotation feed rate decrease. The optima ratio between superficial gas and feed velocities are determined for bubble size and flotation results control at pilot scale. Thus, it is possible to providing the catastrophically changes of precipitate column flotation by using the following established experimental relation: the mean diameter d of the flocs under the action of dissipated energy Et follows a power like law (d~Et -0.5). This allows estimating the size distribution of flocs for the E values which can appear in column."

"Hydrodynamics and mixing are fundamental to the operation of mineral process systems such as flotation cells and metal precipitation reactors. Hydrodynamic conditions influence phase mixing and mass transfer in a multiphase system, and these affect the overall performance of such a system. Detailed information on the effects of the hydrodynamics on the performance of agitated systems is still required for the design and optimal operation of hydrometallurgical systems, which are always multiphase. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques have been employed to study the hydrodynamics and mixing, most of which have focussed on the performance of axial and radial pumping impellers in agitated tanks. However, very little has been reported on the influence of a draft tube on the flow profile in such systems.CFD simulation of a stirred vessel centres on the way the impeller is modelled. Some of the most recent approaches to modelling an impeller are impeller boundary condition (IBC), snap shot, sliding grid (SG), multiple frame of reference (MFR) and inner outer (IO). The accuracy, with which these models predict experimental results and the corresponding computational demands, form the basis upon which the choice of an approach is made. Most of these approaches (IO, SG and MFR) address the key problem of the stirred tank modelling, namely, the simultaneous meshing of the rotating impellers and the stationary baffles. The MFR is computationally cheap and has been found to give predictions that compare well with experimental data.The CFD technique (code CFX4.4) has been employed in the present work to study the hydrodynamics in a mixing vessel stirred with either a Rushton turbine or a pitched blade impeller. The multiple frame of reference (MFR) approach has been used to model both impellers. A draft tube was used only in the Rushton turbine stirred vessel. The flow profiles for the impellers have been studied in three regions; below the impeller tip, at the middle of the tank, and near the liquid surface. The simulation results were compared with literature data obtained using a laser Doppler velocimetry in the three regions of the vessel, and it was found that the model predictions were better in the impeller region. There was a poor prediction of the experimental results in the region closer to the liquid surface; however, this was improved when the turbulence parameter (C2) in the k-e model was set to a higher value. The value of the impeller clearance at which the Rushton turbine generates an axial impeller type flow has been determined and it has been shown that, at this clearance, a draft tube can be used to enhance axial flow in a Rushton turbine stirred reactor."

"In Kazakhstan, there is a unique sulphide copper deposit, in the ores containing the natural isotope of osmium-187 (more than 90 %). In the pyrometallurgical processing of concentrates for the target metal, osmium is mainly sublimated, with wet cleaning of metallurgical gases (dust and gas mixture) 40 % of it together with rhenium passes into washing solutions (wash acid). On the basis of this acid, the production of ammonium perrhenate was organized at the enterprise of the RSE ""Zhezkazganredmet"" and for the first time in the world practice - the isotope of osmium-187. However, the degree of its recovery from solutions does not exceed 8 % of the amount supplied with the charge or 25 % of the amount that was received for extraction. But the bulk of it (~ 75 %) remains in the raffinate, discharged to sewage treatment plants (wastewater). The studies presented in this work are aimed at solving the problem of osmium isotope-187 extracting from wastewater, which are a potential source of increasing metal production in Kazakhstan. The aim of this work is the development and scientific justification of osmium deposition regimes from wastewater using such reagents as thiosulfate and sodium sulphide. The influence of various physicochemical factors on the precipitation of the osmium was studied and optimal conditions for its maximum transition to sediment were chosen. An original method for obtaining osmium concentrate in the presence of sodium thiosulfate with the addition of potassium iodide from a new type of wastewater - man-made ammonia solutions has been developed. These solutions were combined mother liquors of solid-phase stripping operations and dissolution of pulp of crude ammonium perrhenate. On the basis of the obtained results, a settling technology for extraction of the osmium from man-made ammonia rhenium-containing solutions was introduced at RSE ""Zhezkazganredmet"". It should be noted that the degree of extraction of osmium, depending on its concentration in solutions entering on the settlement, and taking into account the addition of sulfuric acid, will vary from 60 to 90 %. The kinetics of oxidative dissolution of lead sulfide in solutions of nitric acid and sodium hypochlorite was studied using the rotating disk method and the factor experiment design. The dependences of the PbS dissolution rate on concentration of oxidant (HNO3 or NaOCl), temperature, disk rotation frequency, and duration of interaction were determined. The adequate kinetic models allowing calculating the specific dissolution rate at any combination of values of the influencing factors were obtained. As a result of the complex analysis of kinetic parameters, the modes of the each process proceeding were established, their macromechanisms were determined, and the limiting stages of the oxidative dissolution processes were revealed. The dissolution kinetics of lead sulfide in solutions of nitric acid was found to have several regimes. At HNO3 concentrations below 0.5 mol/L, the process proceeds in a mixed mode close to a diffusion-controlled. It is caused by low oxidative activity of HNO3 and considerable diffusional diffuculties at this acid concentration range. At the nitric acid concentrations more than 0.5 mol/L and less than 6.0 mol/L, the process was found to be kinetically controlled. The limiting stage of the interaction is the surface chemical reaction. The observed relatively high order of the dissolution rate with respect to the concentration of HNO3 was explained by the autocatalytic action of the acid reduction products. At nitric acid concentrations exceeding 6 mol/L, the process proceeds in a mixed mode close to a diffusion-controlled, and the dissolution rate sharply decreased that was explained by a decrease in the solubility of reaction products. When lead sulfide is dissolved in sodium hypochlorite solutions, at first time the amount of PbS transferred into solution remains close to zero. Gradually, as time goes, this amount begins to increase sharply. The dissolution rate rises and reaches the maximum value, further remaining constant. At the steady-state regime, the dissolution rate is independent of the duration of interaction and disk rotation frequency. The process was found to be kinetically controlled. The limiting stage is likely to be chemical reaction on the surface of solid lead sulfide. The obtained kinetic characteristics enlarge the database on hydrochemical oxidation kinetics of sulfides and can be used for the elaboration of the recommendations for the effective comprehensive exploitation of lead-bearing ores and concentrates. The use of the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to simulate the interaction of particles in dynamic environments is growing rapidly. This technique is also being applied in the study of milling extensively. However, to date more focus has been on the validation of the model. In spite of the advantages of the detailed information that is available from the simulator, appropriate application of this information remains a daunting task. In this paper a technique that combines particle breakage probability data with the energy spectra generated from the DEM is discussed.

"The recovery of base metal sulfides has been emphasized in the study of the flotation of platinum group minerals (PGMs). However, in some ore bodies such as the Platreef of the Bushveld Complex, sulfide minerals do not make up the majority of the more significant PGM mineralization. It is therefore important to develop a fundamental understanding of how non-sulfide and sulfide PGMs respond respectively to the current reagents being used in the flotation of these minerals. The interactions between platinum and palladium sulfides and tellurides with the thiol collectors, ethyl xanthate and diethyl dithiophosphate, have been studied using the electrochemical techniques of mineral rest potential and voltammetry measurements. The differences in the interaction between the two types of minerals with these reagents were of key interest. Rest potential measurements indicated stronger electrochemical interactions of the minerals with ethyl xanthate than diethyl dithiophosphate. These measurements also indicated that there are different forms of oxidized collector present on the mineral surfaces after interaction with ethyl xanthates. Voltammetry measurements support these observations and suggest differences of adsorption on Pt and Pd sulfides than on Pt and Pd tellurides. Voltammetry also showed that there was minimal electrochemical interaction between the Pt and Pd minerals and diethyl dithiophosphate."

In the selection of copper ? molybdenum concentrates with the use of reagents containing sulfide ion ? sodium sulfide, sodium hydrosulfide etc for depression of copper minerals and pyrites, big part of depressor is oxidized by oxygen, which is dissolving in pulp during aeration with air in flotation machines and it is expended unproductively. This is the main reason for the big expenditures of depressor, reaching up 15~20 kg/t collective concentrate and the high exploitation expenditures for the copper ? molybdenum selection. Effective direction for lowering expenditure of depressor and increasing of the technical ? economical effectiveness of moly production is the conducting of the selection in nitrogen medium. In the paper are shown the results, obtained by applying of this direction in selection of collective copper ? molybdenum concentrate from the porphyry copper deposit ?Ellatzite? ? Bulgaria, in which the ratio Mo:Cu is over 1:120. In laboratory conditions, through comparative experiments in medium of air and nitrogen are defined: expenditure and initial concentration of NaHS in pulp for effective depression of copper minerals and pyrites; kinetics of flotation process of molybdenite; influence of pulp density; emf (negative milivolts) of pulp and the expenditure of nitrogen on tech-nological indexes of molybdenum flotation. When working in nitrogen medium decrease of NaHS in rougher molybdenum flotation from 40% to 45% is settled. When nitrogen is also fed in cleaner stages, the total expenditure of depressor is lowered by 64%. The quality of end molybdenum con-centrate is raised with over 5%. On the ground of the results of laboratory studies and of world practice data, an industrial installation for selection of copper ? molybdenum concentrate in nitrogen medium in Wemco inert ? gas machines.

In this study, the effect of different regrinding conditions on the depression of fine pyrite at the cleaner stage was investigated. The regrinding condition was manipulated by different grinding media (stainless steel and mild steel). It was found that, after regrinding with mild steel grinding media, the flotation recovery of pyrite is much lower than with stainless steel grinding media, and it is more difficult to restore by adding more collector. This means, regrinding with mild steel grinding media may depress the pyrite flotation more strongly. The copper activation of pyrite during regrinding was also studied. It was found, that the mild steel grinding media is more beneficial to copper activation than stainless steel media. Additionally, the analysis of pyrite recovery based on the particle size indicated, that the fine particles are more susceptible to different grinding environments than intermediate and coarse particles and therefore are more easily depressed with a much lower flotation recovery.

"The thiosulfate leaching process developed by Barrick to treat sulfidic high preg-robbing gold ores uses calcium thiosulfate as the leaching reagent for ores pre-treated by pressure oxidation, resin for gold recovery with sulfite/trithionate elution and reverse osmosis as a means of reagent recovery. A large portion of the research that led to the development of the technology was based on previous studies completed by different groups over the years, mainly focused on the ammonium thiosulfate system. Operational limitations in the use of the ammonia-containing recycled water in the pressure oxidation circuit were some of the main drivers for the change from ammonium to calcium thiosulfate for the development of the industrial scale process. One of the main aspects for successful gold extraction and recovery in the thiosulfate system is the pseudo-equilibrium reactions that drive distribution of the different gold species (in solids, solution and on resin) in the system. Previous studies have been focused on the thiosulfate reactions and equilibrium constants for the oxysulfur ions (thiosulfate, trithionate, tetrathionate). However, the literature around the effects of the different metal-oxysulfur complexes (Cu and Hg complexes) that form when the ore is in contact with the leaching reagents, and the related effects on stability of the gold complex is limited. The main changes in the gold complex chemistry and stability in the calcium thiosulfate system as compared to the ammonium and sodium equivalents, as well as related effects on gold recoveries, were investigated in the presence of different types of double refractory ores. INTRODUCTION Barrick has developed a thiosulfate leaching process to treat double refractory gold ores, by combining the use of acidic and alkaline autoclave pre-treatment with thiosulfate resin-in-leach (RIL). The process currently in operation at the Goldstrike mine (the TCM process), uses calcium thiosulfate as the leaching reagent, resin for gold recovery with sulfite/trithionate elution and reverse osmosis as a mean of reagent recycle. The main feed to the process plant is highly preg-robbing sulfidic ore from Goldstrike’s open pit. Prior to feeding the pressure oxidation circuit, the ore is processed through the crushing and grinding circuits and treated in preparation for acid or alkaline autoclave processing (POX)."

The influence of supergene oxidation on physicochemical and technological properties of polysulfide ores was studied. Modeling and analysis of oxidation pyrite copper-zinc ore samples from the Valentorskoye deposit show that sulfide floatability is decreased by the longer-term oxidation. The treatment of oxidized samples by sulfuric acid in oxidative conditions and its impact on the elemental sulfur composition on the surface of sulfides was discussed. It is shown that an enhancement of the floatability of sulfides of oxidized polysulfide ores after leaching by sulfuric acid could be perspective for the developing of combining floatation-hydrometallurgical technology of the nonferrous metals recovery.

This paper is concerned with the drainage behaviour of gangue mineral in the froth phase. Experiments were carried out in a continuous laboratory flotation cell in which froth depth and bubble size could be changed independently. The fraction of solids returning from the froth to the pulp zone was expressed using a rate constant. A mixture of hydrophilic solids (silica) and floatable particles (glass ballotini) was used as a flotation feed. Samples of glass ballotini of different hydrophobicities were obtained, using controlled silanation. Three samples, with contact angles of 50, 66, 82 degrees, were used. The effect of the initial bubble size (pulp bubble size), concentration of gangue mineral in the froth zone, and froth depth on the drainage of silica, were investigated. The drainage rate of the entrained solids increases with an increase in the degree of hydrophobicity of the floatable particles. Concerning the effect of pulp bubble size on the drainage rate of entrained solids, larger bubbles always give higher drainage rates due to formation of relatively loose froth structures which allow gangue particles to easily move down to the pulp zone. Conversely, smaller bubbles exhibit lower drainage rate constants, in particular at shallow froth depths.

Flotation practice usually uses the Sheridan-Grizvold selection method, where zinc minerals are activated by addition of copper sulphate and depressed by addition of sodium cyanide, ferrous sulphate, zinc sulphate or various mixtures of these reagents. The method is suitable for the flotation of sulphide ores, which, do not bear precious metals, such as silver and gold. When classical technology with cyanide is applied to depress zinc minerals, the precious metals, which are contained mainly into lead minerals, are dissolved into the solution, which represents a technological loss. In order to avoid this process, we have made use from the knowledge on the semiconducting properties of lead and zinc sulphide minerals. We have changed the surface charge of minerals by means of an electrochemical impact realized by direct current application and specially designed set of insoluble or semi-soluble electrodes. Thus, flotation separation of lead and zinc sulphide minerals was achieved, at increased recovery of lead, zinc and silver. The technology proposed was implemented in a Bulgarian flotation factory; it worked over 5 years providing significant, positive economic, technological and environmental impact. Silver recovery was increased by 0.8-1.0 %, and lead and zinc recovery was increased by 0.8-1.0 %. The technology is easily controllable and adaptable to raw materials and parameters of the technological process. It can be paid back for 6-8 months after the implementation. "Large volumes of mine tailings accumulated in surroundings of porphyry copper deposits represent a growing threat to environment. They contain significant concentrations of toxic metal and metalloids which can contaminate river runoff, ground waters or can be transported by wind. Both extreme pH of fluids in tailings impoundments and high surface areas of processed mineral grains provide their increased reactivity. As a result, during only a few decades, As, Cu, and Mo can be mobilized, redistributed through the tailing column and accumulated through post-deposition leaching, evaporation and contamination with natural fluids. Those processes are reflected in the forming of secondary minerals. Gypsum, Fe oxides/hydroxides, efflorescent salts and clay minerals are typical alteration products in tailings. Here we present the results of reactive transport simulations implemented on the base of PHREEQC and SUTRA codes. The one-dimension model emulates the mass balance between rainfall, evaporation and subsurface runoff, the kinetically- and thermodynamically-driven dissolution of tailing minerals, advective and diffusive transport of tailing fluids, and precipitation of secondary phases. A typical tailing column is composed of four unequal layers with predominance of (i) evaporation, (ii) secondary mineralization above, (iii) below water table, and (iv) near the bottom of dump. Those horizons are characterized by contrasting pH, chemical composition and bulk mineralization of pore fluids, distinct accessibility of atmospheric oxygen and, as a consequence, distinct intensity of sulfide oxidation. The modeling and its verification on Chilean tailings impoundments reveal the complexity and high rates of secondary mineralization. The accumulation of toxic alteration products is controlled by fluid transport through the tailing column induced by both rainfall/evaporation and exchange with subsurface runoff. The geochemical modeling is a powerful approach which allows comparing the processes in tailing deposits produced by distinct flotation regimes and providing the long-term predictions of their environmental impact as well as identifying sectors of tailings for possible re-processing."

Coals occurring in nature are characterized by various properties. According to Polish norms, the classification of coals taking into consideration their calorific value contains coals from type 31 (flaming coal) until type 43 (meta-anthracite). The samples of coal of type 31 were taken for investigation. To this purpose, the approximations of ash contents and density distribution functions were done for this coal type (determination of marginal distribution functions). They were the basis for application of so-called Morgenstern distribution functions to approximate the function Z=L (?), where Z is ash contents and ? - coal density. Then, the comparison between obtained results was performed and the results were statistically evaluated. They are the basis for the further research of other types of coals.

This project was specifically aimed at using increased acceleration separation, as a method to optimize the recovery of gold in an ore body mainly consisting of hematite where the specific gravity of gold is much higher in comparison to the carrying material, making it possible to separate gold from other materials like silica, base metals and their oxides, usually associated with gravitation-gold-recovery-processes. The ore body investigated in this project originated from a gold reef containing a large portion of gold locked inside the gold pyrite complexes, which was mined and treated in a conventional way. After gold extraction, the material was pumped to a tailings dump and the gold extraction of this dump was investigated. In order to assemble a concentration plant setup, the head grade and size distribution of the dump and bulk sample were determined accurately. Chemical analysis and mineralogical examination were done on a representative sample of the bulk sample, to determine the chemical composition of the material. The results obtained thereof were evaluated and a pilot plant was configured. A bulk sample was processed in the pilot plant and the results were evaluated. The results at optimum acceleration forces applied, resulted in a recovery of 5% of the mass, with a gold concentrate of 90 g/t Au, which represented 58% recovery of the gold. The hematite with high specific gravity as main phase positively influenced the high acceleration separation process. It proved that if the specific gravity of particles in a suspension were increased, high acceleration separation could be applied effectively to separate much smaller particle sizes.
