Recently, characterized by fast development high- and nano-technology, demand for rare and trace metals has increased. One of such metals is gallium. Gallium compounds, mainly GaAs, are used in medicine, to manufacture optoelectronic devices, microwave techniques, devices of solar power and infrared optics, etc. The basic gallium industrial deposits are known only on land. There are bauxites (50 ppm), nepheline rocks and ores (36-38 ppm, minerals concentrators are nepheline and sodalite), Zn-Pb-Cu ores (5000-12000 ppm, minerals concentrators are gallite, germanite, sphalerite, bornite), sulphide-polymetallic and Pb-Zn ores (10-32 ppm, minerals concentrators sphalerite, chalcopyrite) (Vershkovskya et al., 1998). High concentration of gallium are observed in hydrothermal massive sulphides of a Mid-Okinawa Trough (The South Chinese Sea) and Sujo seamount (The Philippine Sea) (Noguchi et al., 2007). As it is known, deep-sea massive sulphides and associated Fe-Mn crusts are products of hydrothermal fluid discharge. High-temperature massive sulphides precipitation are the first, and low-temperature Fe-Mn crusts deposition is the last process of hydrothermal mineralization (Cronan, 1982). Hydrogenic crusts and nodules of the World ocean are characterized by low concentration of Ga, close to clarke (19 ppm) (Kobaltbogatye.., 2002). Hydrogenic crusts from the Sea of Okhotsk are exception, because Ga concentrations are exceeded clarke in 3,5 times (Mikhailik, et al., 2009). Complex studying of Fe-Mn crusts from deep-sea basins volcanic seamounts of the Sea of Japan has shown their hydrothermal-sedimentary genesis (Mikhailik, 2009). High gallium concentration (up to 850 ppm) was established in these crusts by ICP-MS (Agilent 7500C). Microprobe research (JXA-8100) of samples Fe-Mn crusts has not revealed the gallium minerals concentrators. It suggests that, gallium in Fe-Mn crusts of the Sea of Japan is sorb substance.

INTRODUCTION Starting in February 2014, 19 partners from EU industry, research institutions and academia joined forces and formed the Blue Mining consortium. In the following four years, they have set out to work on the development of deep sea mining technology, looking into exploration, identification, economic assessment and vertical transport systems for the mining of seafloor massive sulphides and polymetallic nodules. In the beginning 2018 this research & development project has come to an end. The Blue Mining project was one of the first EU subsidised projects embracing the TRL system. This system describes a method of de-risking technology using a simple 9-step approach. This method requires experimental testing in laboratory and relevant environments to be able to reach the higher levels (TRL>5) This paper will discuss the progress in development of the vertical transport system, with a focus on the performed experimental work. This paper will discuss three topics: • Booster station technology • Riser dynamics • Vertical hydraulic transport process. BOOSTER STATION TECHNOLOGY Deep knowledge of transport processes is a prerequisite for a clog free vertical transport One of the key technologies in the VTS is the booster station. The centrifugal pump booster station concept is developed in Blue Mining, it consists of two centrifugal pumps and multiple valves, assembled in member-type frame. Deep sea conditions pose special requirements on all components due to the extreme pressures at large water depths. In the Blue Mining project a Deep Sea Special Motor has been developed and tested in laboratory and in the field. The motor is completely filled, lubricated and cooled using seawater due to its unique open structure, furthermore it does not require any lubricants minimizing the environmental pressure of the motor. The motor is first extensively tested in a laboratory, after these tests have been concluded successfully, the motor is shipped to Norway where it has been successfully tested for more than 100 hours at 425 meter water depth.

"Seafloor mining provides significant potential economic benefits for many Pacific nations that may be “land poor” but “coastline rich,” meaning they have the potential to utilize and profit from the mineral wealth within their Exclusive Economic Zones that extend 200 nautical miles (360 km) out from their coastlines. Within international waters, mineral wealth is the “Common Heritage of Mankind” with additional benefits for sponsoring states and their people.The Solwara 1 Project build continues with significant progress over the last twelve months. The Seafloor Production Tools (SPTs), Subsea Slurry Lift Pump, riser pipe, launch and recovery systems and winches are now complete with delivery to test facilities and the vessel ongoing. Recent focus has been on submerged trials for the SPTs, but the vessel build continues to progress to schedule. Nautilus appreciates the great support thus far from our all our stakeholders.Our focus is to develop the world's first commercial high grade seafloor copper-gold project in an environmentally and socially responsible manner and to launch the deepwater seafloor resource production industry.Nautilus’s marine research continues, including a 3.5-month series of exploration cruises for Seafloor Massive Sulphides in the Bismarck Sea, as well as fabrication of purpose designed exploration equipment."

In June of 2013, Odyssey Marine Exploration conducted sea trials of the newly installed SeaBat 7150 full-ocean multibeam sonar system on the M/V Dorado Discovery over the Fierberling Guyot in the northeast Pacific Ocean. Fieberling Guyot is located approximately 990 kilometers west of San Diego, California and it rises abruptly from the deep ocean floor (~4300 meters) to a minimum depth of approximately 438 meters. The SeaBat 7150 operates at two distinct frequencies, 24 kHz (shallow to 3000 meters) and 12 kHz (full-ocean depth greater than 2000 meters). Onboard operational data are managed by a suite of state-of-the-art software. A SQL Server 2012 database provides the highly specific management and visualization tools as ArcGIS 10, Micromine 2013, and Geobank 2013 database. The 7150 is mounted on a gondola one meter lower than on previous system and greatly reduces bubble interference. The 7150 generates 880 beams

"SeaTech Solutions International (S) Pte Ltd, Singapore are the designers of world’s first seabed mining ship. The ship is now under construction and expected to be delivered next year. The Deep Sea Mining industry is eagerly awaiting commencement of her seabed mining operations and the success of this story will go a far way in accelerating investment in Deep Sea Mining and hopefully we should see many such projects take off and many such ships launched in the near future.Based on own experiences SeaTech discusses in this paper, various important issues that need to be considered for design of such Deep Sea Mining ships, the challenges faced and possible solutions to address them.From a ship designers’ perspective, there are not many direct previous references available, the seabed mining methods and associated equipment are also a new technology & products are still developing, there is no standard method and equipment for processing of mineral ore onboard, and above all there is the huge challenge of loading, storage and discharge of ore cargo efficiently in the confines spaces. Associated with the uncertainties of such issues is the uncertainty of weight, space, power, services and maintenance requirements, which can vary through the design and construction period and put the initial ship design at huge risk. Sufficient design margins need to be provided and a constant & strict control is absolutely necessary to ensure that the budget on each technical aspect is not exceeded. The local strength of the vessel particularly needs to be robust to take ultra-large loads due to huge equipment and their lifting /handling equipment/winches and tall mining process modules."

One of the primary responsibilities of the International Seabed Authority?s Secretariat (the Secretariat) is to assess the quantities of metals present in seabed polymetallic nodules in the International Seabed Area under the Authority?s jurisdiction. To carry out this responsibility, the Secretariat periodically undertakes an assessment of the reserved areas in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the northeastern Pacific (CCZ) using the data submitted by the registered Contractors and maintained in the Authority?s POLYDAT database. The results of its most recent assessment demonstrated that the information submitted by the Contractors, though satisfactory for some purposes, does not permit the in situ quantities of metals in these areas to be estimated with a degree of confidence that is comparable to many land-based mineral resource estimates. Our strategy is to divide the work into two distinct but closely related efforts; one to draft a Prospector?s Guide that provides a narrative description of the key geological and oceanographic data that may be related to deposit abundance and metal content, and another that we call the Geological Model, that summarizes and documents the quantitative resource assessments accomplished in the project.

"REVIEW OF ISA's DRAFT EXPLOITATION REGULATIONS – HAVE KEY STAKEHOLDERS' CONCERNS BEEN ADDRESSED ADEQUATELY?In early August 2017, the ISA published a revised draft of the exploitation regulations. My presentation will focus on the extent to which key State and Contractor issues raised in formal submissions in November 2016 have been addressed in the revised draft and any additional key issues in the revised draft which are likely to cause significant concern for Contractors.ABSTRACTFollowing the ISA's call for submissions in response to draft zero of the exploitation regulations in July 2016, 43 responses from stakeholders were received by the ISA in November 2016. My presentation will start by briefly looking at how the ISA has continued to engage with stakeholders following the publication of draft zero of the exploitation regulations, including at payment regime workshops in London (November 2016) and Singapore (April 2017) and at the environmental workshop held in Berlin in March 2017. It will also touch on the publication in February 2017 of what was in effect a very preliminary draft of the environmental regulations before moving on to consider in detail the extent to which key State and Contractor issues have been addressed in the ISA revised draft exploitation regulations which were published in August 2017. My review of the formal submissions will include, amongst other things, commentary on:(i) the level of Stakeholder response (State Parties to UNCLOS, Sponsoring States, Privately owned Contractors, State Owned Contractors and NGOs);(ii) the quality of the submissions (particularly by States and Contractors); (iii) the key concerns raised by State and Contractor stakeholders and how those issues have been addressed in the revised draft exploitation regulations; and(iv) how all stakeholders need to further engage with the ISA to ensure that the exploitation code adequately addresses the legitimate and reasonable concerns of each Stakeholder group (e.g. Contractors, Sponsoring States, Developing States and NGOs)."

A chemical and geological study of beach samples from the Mexican North Pacific was undertaken in order to evaluate the chemical composition of the beach sediments and it s association to lithology, climate, topography and weathering. The North Pacific Mexican littoral is characterized by arid weather with wide coastal plains and three geological provinces. The sands from the area are mainly finer, well sorted and show high maturity because of the high wave regime and the high energy conditions produced by the California Current in the coastline. The provenance index reflects that the region has a source of deep seated rocks, now exposed and dissected. Factor analysis made using the chemical composition showed the samples can be differentiated by five factors: 1) SiO2, 2) Al2O3; 3) Cu; 4) Sr and P2O2 and 5) Na content. Samples located in the northof the study area showed the highest values of Fe2O3 (17.72%), TiO2 (2.43%), V (576 ppm) and Zn (141 ppm) associated to methamorphic rocks present in the area.

What is known about manganese nodules and their potential commercial recovery is outlined in terms of economics, legal rights, environmental impacts, and mineral genesis. As a result of 20 years of accomplishments it is clear that nodules comprise a real resource, and that they can be collected in water depths up to 5000 m, for brief periods, and raised to a surface vessel at rates of production appropriate for scale model systems. Based upon information in the public domain at present there is more confidence in the nature and magnitude of the resource than in the ability to recover nodules commercially. A review of the literature suggests that the metallurgical processing of manganese nodules is technically feasible and that the associated costs are well predictable. What is less clear is the market outlook for the products. All "overlapping claim" conflicts have been resolved. Therefore, parties with a historic interest in nodule mining appear now to have the right to mine in the future, assuming they properly complete whatever exploration license obligations they may have.

"With the expansion of “green” energy technologies, the demand for the critical raw materials required to sustain this growth is increasing. Many E-tech elements, including tellurium (Te) and rare earth elements (REEs), suffer from high supply shortage risk and the need for more diversified metal supply routes is driving research into alternative resources. Hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts, seafloor deposits of Fe- and Mnoxyhydroxides that form from the direct precipitation from seawater, present a potentially important future source of E-tech elements. With growing interest in the potential wealth of these deposits and the issuing of permits for deep-sea mining and exploration, more work is underway to understand the nature of ferromanganese crust deposits, their elemental concentrations and distributions, and the potential impacts of mining activities.This research focusses on the formation of ferromanganese crust deposits and processes that control the extreme enrichment of elements such as Te, Co and REEs. The crusts were systematically sampled and mapped between ~ 1000 – 4000 m depths using ROV ISIS, from a range of environments, substrates and morphologies from Tropic Seamount (NE Atlantic) in order to determine the seamount-scale factors that control major and trace elemental concentration variations. These factors include depth, surface roughness and micro-bathymetry, location relative to long-term mean current direction and energy, influence of tidal energy dispersion across the seamount, sediment supply, substrate lithology, biological productivity and phosphatisation. The study analyses trace-element characteristics of 100 ferromanganese crust samples alongside standard reference materials NOD-A-1 and NOD-P-1 (US Geological Survey manganese nodules). At this initial stage, we report results from whole rock acid digestion and ICP-MS analyses."

Recently high-resolution paleomagnetic age determination of ferromanganese crust in less than millimeter scale has been successfully carried out using a superconducting quantum interference device microscopy magnetometer (SMM). However, it has not been clearly identified how the crust is keeping ancient geomagnetic field records. Here we try to identify magnetic mineralogy of the crust obtained in the Magellan Seamounts, the West Pacific (~20 °N). As a record, age of the crust used in this study is extended to ~10 Ma at ~40 mm depth and ~28 Ma at ~100 mm depth, respectively, based on the combination approach of SMM measurements, Be-isotope and Co-chronology. Thermal demagnetization revealed a Curie temperature of ~560oC, corresponding to (titano)magnetite. Component analysis of isothermal remanent magnetization identified a presence of two types of magnetite. Measurements of first order reverse curve showed a dominance of non-interacting single-domain magnetite, which is one of the intrinsic feature of biogenic magnetite. Although most of the magnetic particles on transmitted electron microscopy are covered by amorphous Fe-Mn minerals, some are observed as a prototype of biogenic magnetite showing a chain of ~10 nm sized magnetite cubes. However, a magnetite signal (i.e., Verway transition at ~ –120 oC) was not detected in low-temperature treatment probably due to surface oxidation of magnetite. Contribution of interacting magnetite of detrital origin is <30% throughout a crust. Interestingly, contribution of detrital magnetite is almost three times higher since ~10 Ma. At this boundary, a growth rate of the crust is double up and flux of other detrital signals, including Al, Mg, Ti and Zr, are also increased.

An unusual combination of ten new, deep (-100 m) coreholes and an extensive high-resolution seismic reflection network enables us to produce a detailed study of the phosphorite resources in the Tertiary strata of the Georgia continental shelf. These strata are mixtures of a terrigenous facies, notably quartz and clay along with minor amounts of other aluminosilicate minerals, and of a marine facies, notably phosphorite and carbonate. Phosphatic sediments occur throughout the cores, however the richest phosphorite beds are in the middle Miocene (Serravallian) sediment, where they constitute up to 70 percent of the sediment mass. Major zones of phosphate enrichment occur chiefly at major unconformity boundaries (tops of Oligocene, lower and middle Miocene, upper Miocene, and lower and upper Pliocene) and at prominent intrastratal reflectors representing minor unconformities within units. Phosphorite co-occurs with the clay minerals, especially palygorskite, but correlates inversely with carbonate and detrital quartz, indicating a low-energy depositional environment. The clay minerals present in these strata, which have an environmental consequence on recovery of the phosphorite, are varying concentrations of smectite, kaolinite, mica, palygorskite, and sepiolite. Phosphatic resources have been determined within only the Miocene strata. Sediment volume for this unit to the 100 m isobath on the continental shelf has been established using the high-resolution seismic reflection network that has been calibrated using the deep coreholes. Phosphorite grains larger than 0.1 mm average about 40% of the sediment. In turn, most of the remainder of the sediment in this size range is quartz, which is separable from phosphate grains using conventional flotation techniques. Our estimate is that 300 Gt of phosphorite lie within the Miocene strata of the Georgia continental shelf.

Geothermal Energy has a great potential for meeting the electrical and thermal energy requirements of many countries and territories lying along tectonically active zones within and surrounding the Pacific Basin. Energy requirements for many of these small, scattered volcanic island nations preclude development of conventional generating facilities large enough to incorporate any economies of scale. However, by attempting to discover and develop shallow, relatively low temperature, geothermal reservoirs associated with recent vulcanism on many of the volcanic islands, exploration expenditures and risks, and problems associated with the development of high temperature resources can be reduced. Exploration and development drilling for these resources can be accomplished with truck mounted rotary drilling rigs that are less costly and more suitable for operations within the island infrastructures than the conventional rigs normally used in the drilling of deep, high temperature geothermal resources. Experience over the past decade with small, modular, binary (Rankine) cycle generating units indicates that geothermal energy can provide a reliable source of baseload electricity in the amounts required and at a cost that is competitive with other alternative and conventional energy sources. Development of shall, moderate temperature, geothermal resources with small, modular binary cycle generating units can provide ideal additions to the energy sources of many of the Pacific volcanic island nations within the framework of their island economies.

Since industry is progressing into the deep sea, marine scientists have expressed their concern about environmental disturbances which will be introduced by using the deep seafloor for mining metalliferous resources or as a repository for wastes. Environmental studies have been conducted on national levels and in bilateral or multilateral cooperation in the development of manganese nodule mining, as this is generally achieved in marine research. These investigations were partly large-scale and experimental approaches aiming at the assessment of the impacts expected to occur in commercial mining. The results elaborated till today and expected to be acquired in the foreseeable future may remain limited. Reliable impact evaluation will result from monitoring a Pilot Mining Operation (PMO). The lecture will present the broad outlines of a possible program and a preliminary calculation of approximate costs for such a combined industrial test and environmental monitoring event. Although the extent of necessary efforts for the environmental risks evaluation can only be estimated rather vaguely, it will become evident that the required human, technical, logistical, and financial resources to be mobilized will exceed industrial capacities and go beyond national funds. Therefore, such assessment of environmental risks is calling for broad international cooperation. While industrial developments for mining the deep sea will be ruled by competition or probably by restricted joint ventures, environmental care ranges outside competition and falls within the interest of all parties involved. Environmental studies, unlike technologies for the same function, do not primarily need duplication. International cooperation in PMO monitoring would equally well support all mining companies or consortia, it would minimize the efforts for all engaged in this challenging venture of deep-sea mining and it would maximize the precautionary discussion on and the care for the deep-sea environment.

Radiometric surveys of the beach and nearshore zone of the Dutch Frisian Islands have identified sands enriched in heavy minerals. The areas of heavy mineral concentration have been mapped in detail using a state of the art towed gamma-ray detector, which gives improved sensitivity through the use of new detector materials and improved data processing techniques. The detector provides continuous measurement of sea floor radioactivity (and of a number of other parameters) and can be used simultaneously with other survey techniques, such as echo sounding, sidescan sonar and shallow seismic profiling. It enables a rapid, and cost effective, assessment of the surface distribution of heavy minerals to be made. The heavy mineral suite includes magnetite, ilmenite, garnet, rutile and zircon. These minerals contain 1-3 orders of magnitude more U and Th, in terms of their activity concentrations, than the accompanying light minerals (mainly quartz). Since the heavy mineral composition of the sands appears to be relatively constant along the Dutch Frisian Island chain, the U and Th concentrations can be used to provide a quick estimate of the heavy mineral content. The sea floor radiometric measurements allow sediment sampling for more detailed analysis to be highly targetted. The zones of heavy mineral enrichment are generally sub-parallel to the coast and are usually confined to water depths of 5-10 m. There is a close correlation with sand bars on the shoreface, the highest radioactivity typically occurring just seaward of the crest of these features. As well as being used for heavy mineral exploration, similar radiometric methods can be applied to mineral processing. Gamma-ray detection systems can be used to provide rapid analysis in the process stream enabling on-line grade control and optimisation of processing, from excavation of mineral sands to the final products.

Alaska&apos;s expansive continental shelf represents future opportunities for marine mineral development. Although today&apos;s metal prices and subsidized foreign mineral production continue to discourage industry investment in marine exploration worldwide, the longer term outlook is one of increasing costs on-shore with a dwindling land-base available on which to search for and extract minerals. Likely, the generations of the 21st century will increasingly recover their minerals from the sea-floor. Though largely unexplored, Alaska potentially represents a major port ion of the U.S. marine resources. Several factors demonstrate this. First, the Alaskan OCS is huge; 74% of the entire United States&apos; continental shelf lies off of Alaska, and 54% of the U.S. coastline is Alaskan. Combined with the jurisdiction waters of the Soviet Far East, the Bering-Chukchi shelf is one of the world&apos;s largest tracts of shallow water. Second, Alaska is situated at the northwestern terminus of the mineral-rich American cordillera. From Chile to Alaska, major on-shore deposits of precious and base metals, ferroalloys, and industrial minerals are found in the tectonically disturbed belts of the cordillera. In 1988, the western U.S. cordilleran states produced 70% of this country&apos;s mineral output (excluding construction materials). Throughout the cordillera&apos;s entire 10,000 mile length, the rock units strike largely parallel to the coastline, but in Alaska they extend directly offshore and onto the continental shelf. The recovery of most minerals, which are amenable to gravity concentration, is standardly determined by accurate sampling and assaying. .With respect to particulate - gold ores, sampling and assaying are still the convention, but the accuracy and reproducibility of these operations are much discussed and debated points. Evaluation of gravity concentrators by conventional sampling and assaying techniques is very time consuming, costly and may introduce a large amount of uncertainty into the results due to the particulate nature of placer gold. These problems are not unique to placer gold ores and apply to any low grade ore with particulate values. A gravity concentrator evaluation process developed by MIRL employs the use of neutron activated gold (198Au) and radiation detection circuits which monitor the concentrator&apos;s product pulp streams. Concentrator recovery is determined from the ratio of the number of gold particles detected as passing into the concentrate to the total number of gold particles detected over all monitored pulp streams. This system eliminates the experimental errors introduced by sampling, sample reduction, and assaying and allows recovery to be evaluated for gold particles of specific sizes, shapes, and flatness. This system enjoys its greatest utility where a large number of tests are to be run in order to evaluate a concentrator over a variety of operational settings, i.e. factorial designs, and allows accurate testing of concentrators operated in closed circuit systems. Beginning in 1984, MIRL conducted radiotracer studies of unit processes, which included jigging, static wedge wire screening, elutriation, and concentration with compound water cyclones.

INTRODUCTION Work by Humphris et al., (2002); Ondréas et al., (2009); Barreyre et al., (2012); and Escartín et al., (2015) has identified active and inactive hydrothermal sites along the Lucky Strike segment. The sites that contain the largest accumulation of known sulfides are located between the north and the southern zones (Figure 1), a vent site area that is referred to as the Main Lucky Strike hydrothermal field (Escartín et al., 2015). Hydrothermal fluid outflow has been linked to a shallow fault network (Barreyre et al., 2012). However, specific constraints on fault geometries have not been determined. Other off-axis sites at Lucky Strike, such as Capelinhos (high temperature vent), and Grunnus (inactive?), as well as a low temperature vent field (on-axis), Ewan, have been described by (Escartín et al., 2015). Given the spatial relationship between the Main Lucky Strike hydrothermal field (MLSHF), and the intersection of northern rift faults with the southern rift faults, a structural analysis of this area can provide insight into the fault controls on fluid flow that leads to hydrothermal venting and sulfide precipitation. METHODOLOGY Structural data (dip direction and dip) was determined using Leapfrog Geo 4.0 software. Bathymetric data was obtained from Escartín et al., (2015) and references therein. The bathymetry was imported into Leapfrog Geo (in UTM format) and, using the structural modelling tool, individual measurements with dip direction and dip data were collected with a focus on the northern volcanic rift and the southern central volcano (Figure 2a). All measurements were taken from what the authors consider as normal faults, and to aid the determination of individual measurements a “face dip” map was constructed, where the bathymetry is colored by slope angle (Figure 2b). All measurements are simultaneously plotted on a stereonet generated by the Leapfrog Geo Software. Data were divided into northern and southern, and western and eastern zones to determine the relationship between hydrothermal venting and the structural geometries at Lucky Strike (Figure 2c). Slip measurements for individual faults were determined along the dip of the fault with a measuring tool. Net slip, heave (horizontal displacement), and throw (vertical displacement) was calculated for each of the zones.

Scientists show that polymetallic nodules and massive sulfides from deep sea mining contain valuable metals. These metals have the potential to overcome future shortages of supply. Hence, companies, government agencies and industrial associations increasingly evaluate deep sea mining as a promising supplement of land mining. Technologies to extract, exploit, transport and smelt polymetallic nodules and massive sulfides industrially are still in conceptual stage and not sufficiently advanced for operation. According to the International Seabed Authority, large scale exploitation would require a successful pilot mining test in order to demonstrate e.g. the technological feasibility but also the conservation of environmental systems services. At the same time, NGO´s and a some scientists point out that large scale extraction of polymetallic nodules and massive sulfides could disturb the habitat of benthic organisms, with unknown long-term effects. Aside from the direct impacts of mining, indirect consequences about leakage are likely. In the oral presentation I will show how companies, government agencies, scientists and association/interest groups perceive and assess economical/technological, social and environmental risks and opportunities of deep sea mining. In order to analyze the perspectives of each stakeholder group on deep sea mining, we conducted 15 interviews with four stakeholder groups and a large scale survey (n = 500, return rate = 13 %) in Germany. We used the concept of sustainability with its economical/technological, ecological and social dimensions for the interpretation of the results.
