"The Red Chris Cu-Au deposit (522.7 Mt at 0.35% Cu and 0.27 g/t Au), northwestern British Columbia, is one of several pre-accretionary porphyry systems in the Cordillera of westernCanada. It is hosted by an Early Jurassic hornblende monzonite to quartz monzodiorite porphyry which forms part of a suite of dikes and stocks that intrude Late Triassic volcanic strata. Major and trace element chemical data suggest that these Early Jurassic intrusions have compositions which fall on the boundary between alkalic and calc-alkalic compositions. Alteration and mineralization in the Red Chris deposit are more typical of calc-alkaline porphyry systems with abundant potassic, sericitic and argillic assemblages and quartz-rich stockworks. It lacks Na- and Ca-bearing silicate assemblages which characterize the alkalic porphyry deposits of British Columbia. One of the more unusual features of the deposit is the abundance of carbonate alteration and veins which occur throughout the hydrothermal history of the deposit. This type of alteration and veining is more typical of alkalic porphyry deposits.The composition of the carbonates vary both temporally and spatially with different alteration zones. Potassic zones, which are characterized by orthoclase±albite±quartz±chalcopyrite±bor-nite±magnetite±hematite and Au/Cu ratios of 1:1 (g/t Au:% Cu), contain minor siderite veins and alteration. Quartz-sericite-carbonate (QSC) zones overprint earlier potassic alteration and comprisequartz+ankerite+sericite+pyrite+chalcopyrite with Au/Cu ratios of 0.5:1 (g/t Au:% Cu). Ankerite isthe main carbonate in this stage but has a variable composition with a more Fe-rich variety associated with mineralized veins. Localized chlorite-carbonate alteration zones, characterized by chlorite+carbonate+quartz±kaolinite±pyrite±gypsum and high Au/Cu ratios [2 to 3.5:1; (g/t Au:% Cu)],contain predominantly calcite. Late stage carbonate-gypsum veins have an ankerite to dolomite com-position which is very similar to the regional carbonate alteration and veins."

"Les unités volcano-sédimentaires de la ceinture de l'Abitibi à l’est de Val-d' Or ont été regroupées en quatre domaines litho tectoniques. Du nord vers le sud, nous reconnaissons les domaines d'Assup, de Garden lsland de Val-d' Or, de Trivio et de Villebon. Deux de ces domaines (Garden Island et Trivio) correspondent à des couloirs de déformation, d’envergure régionale et d’orientation approximative E-W. Les trois autres domaines sont caractérises par des volcanites defond océanique de type MORB (tholéiites et komatiites) qui sont en position inferieure; ces volcanites sont surmontées par des sédiments marins de type turbidite (domaine de Ville bon) ou évoluent dans le temps, soit vers un volcanisme bimodal d'affinités tholéiitique et calco-alcaline ( domaine d'Assup), soit vers un volcanisme d'arc insulaire (domaine de Val-d'Or). Il n'existe aucune certitude de corrélation litho stratigraphique entre les différents domaines et l'on doit considérer la possibilité que ceux-ci représentent l'accolage tectonique de terranes de nature et d'origine différente.Les principales caractéristiques structurales de la région sont regroupées en quatre étapes de déformation dont trois sont archéennes et la quatrième attribuée à l'orogenèse grenvillienne. Au moins cinq facies métamorphiques ont été reconnus: I) un facies régional faible propre à la province du Supérieur, 2) un facies de cornéennes a amphibole en périphérie du pluton de Pershing, 3) un facies hydrothermal dans la zone tectonique de Cadillac, 4) un facies régional moyen dans la zone de bordure de la province de Grenville, et 5) un facies régional élevé a l'intérieur de la zone structurale du front de Grenville.Le front de Grenville est défini dans la région par l’apparition subite des ortho gneiss au faciès métamorphique élevé et par la disparition du grain tectonique E-W. Le contact brusque entre les deux provinces pourrait correspondre à une zone de chevauchement de la province de Grenville sur la province du Supérieur. La région étudiée est l’hôte d’un gite majeur de sulfures massifs et de plusieurs gites et indices aurifères; elle présente des cibles favorables pour l’exploration minière dans le contexte tectonométa-morphique de l'influence grenvillienne. L'intérêt de la Formation de Val-d' Or pour les métaux de base et le potentiel aurifère des couloirs de déformation d'orientation approximative E-W, sont bien connus. Les structures grenvilliennes NE-SW, qui se développent vers l'est, représentent aussi des cibles intéressantes, en particulier dans les secteurs ou elles intersectent des cisaillements E-W kénoriens."

"Abstract - The Halfmile Lake South Deep zone, Bathurst Mining Camp, New Brunswick, was discovered by Noranda Inc. (Exploration) as a result of a 3-D seismic survey in 1998 and the subsequent drilling of ten diamond-drill cores. The deposit consists of massive, breccia, and stockwork Pb-Zn-Cu sulfide minerals, and is hosted by a volcano-sedimentary sequence belonging to the overturned Ordovician Tetagouche Group. Epiclastic rocks and interbedded fine-grained felsic pyroclastic rocks dominate the stratigraphic footwall. Locally, crystal-rich felsic tuffs and subordinate epiclastic rocks comprise the immediate stratigraphic hanging wall. The entire stratigraphic sequence was intruded by quartz-feldspar porphyritic intrusions, and cut by intermediate and basic dikes. The volcanic and sedimentary rocks can be discriminated geochemically using trace element ratios such as Zr/TiO2 and Nb/TiO2, despite intensive alteration and cleavage development. These ratios indicate that four protolith volcanic compositions exist: rhyolite, dacite, andesite, and basalt. The aphyric and feldspar- and quartz-phyric volcanic rocks are dacitic and rhyolitic in composition; epiclastic rocks have trace element ratios consistent with dacitic compositions. Pearce element ratio diagrams, general element ratio diagrams, and petrographic observations demonstrate that the rhyolitic volcanic rocks exhibit evidence of albite, potassium feldspar, and quartz fractionation, dacitic volcanic rocks exhibit little evidence of any fractionation, and epiclastic sedimentary rocks exhibit evidence of quartz sorting only. Hydrothermal alteration is best represented by the presence of phengitic muscovite and daphnitic chlorite. Minor calcite occurs in the stratigraphic hanging wall, deep in the stratigraphic footwall, and in post-mineralization dikes, and thus is not interpreted to be part of the causative hydrothermal event. Element additions and losses during alteration have been used to determine net alteration reactions, and these have been used to identify alteration parameters that are independent of other forms of alteration and fractionation/sorting, and which can be used to guide exploration. These parameters include: a bulk hydrolysis measure, (2Ca+Na+K-2CO2)/Al; a muscovite alteration measure, K/Al; an albite destruction measure, Na/Al; a chlorite alteration measure, (Fe+Mg-S/2)/Al; a chlorite composition measure, (Fe-S/2)/Mg; a sulfidization measure, S/Ti; and a carbonatization measure, CO2/Ti. With the exception of the carbonatization measure, these alteration parameters define a distinct lateral and vertical zone of intense hydrothermal alteration in the stratigraphic footwall of the deposit, and demonstrate that the epiclastic rocks are predominantly chlorite altered, and the volcanic rocks are predominantly muscovite altered. Within the alteration halo, element additions of Fe and H, and element losses of Na are characteristic. Potassium was added to muscovite-altered rocks, but subsequently removed from chlorite-altered rocks. The results from this study demonstrate that metamorphism and deformation have not significantly obscured hydrothermal alteration signatures."

This paper shows an approach that a gondola-typed robot recognizes walls on building facades. It is applicable for autonomous or teleoperated building façade painting robots. The robot may react based on the wall classification data. This approach is based on 2D LRF(two-dimensional Laser Range Finder). The robot acquires relative distances to walls, and a Kalman filter decides correspondence of walls. An ARS(Attribute Reference System) sensor helps convert LRF coordinate to global coordinate. The experimental results demonstrate the conversion of LRF data.

"Methane emission and the desorption characteristics of vertical borehole coal samples of Greenhills multiple seams in the vicinity of Elkford, British Columbia were investigated. Three vertical boreholes at depths of 335 m, 380 m and 395 m were drilled along the west wall of an active open pit mine and 44 core samples from various coal seams were obtained for desorption studies.The results are presented in three tables and illustrated with six figures. The methane content was found to increase significantly at depths greater than 200 m. The adsorption equation by Kim and the properties of the coal have been used to predict the methane content and these were compared with the measured values by the direct method.IntroductionThe coalification of plant material in the sedimentary rock produces different ranks of co al and gases of various composition. The gas mixtures are retained in coal beds and rock strata under pressure. The gas content in a coal bed varies considerably depending on the rank of coal and the depth of overburden. The gas content is defined as the volume of gases adsorbed in a unit weight of coal materials. The net amount of gases remaining in a coal seam depends on the difference in the rate of generation of methane by geo-thermal heat and the rate of diffusion of the gases out of the coal bed through sedimentary cover. The major factor that causes the change in rank and the liberation of gases is the temperature, which is governed by the thermal conductivity of sedimentary cover and the heat flux through the underlying rocks. The rate of diffusion of the gases out of the coal is governed by the porosity of the overlying rocks and the degree of fracture. The measured values of gas content in major North American coal beds are from zero up to 24 cm3 per gram of coal(1,2). A gas content of 2.5 to 9 cm3/g is considered ""gassy"" and that of 9 cm3/g or higher is considered ""very gassy"" for underground mining(3). Normally, the gas mixtures released from bituminous coal in Canada contain 90 to 98% methane and the remainder is made up of CO2, N2, 02, H2, He and other hydrocarbons(4)."

The primary limiting factor for hoisting capacity from great depths is the self-weight of the typical steel wire ropes used for mine hoisting. Steel wire ropes possess properties making them very suitable for mine hoisting including high strength and durability, but have the negative characteristic of being relatively heavy in comparison with their strength. Also, as hoisting depths increase, the service life of steel wire ropes decreases due to the higher stresses and physical effects on the ropes. The significantly higher strength-to-weight ratio of synthetic ropes compared with steel ropes offers the primary advantage of hoisting a larger payload with a similar size rope and hoisting plant. The beneficial properties of synthetic ropes could be used to improve the overall economics of deep underground mining both for new deep shaft projects and for existing mining operations expanding to deeper orebodies. A research and development program has been initiated to evaluate the suitability of a fully synthetic rope for the mine hoisting application, including rope discard methodology and NDT testing. The three phases/projects are: 1) proof of concept with focus on coilability under load (successfully completed in 2012); 2) high speed and load durability optimization & NDT Development; and 3) in-situ mine trial.

Under conditions of stable crack propagation at room temperature, the elastic energy stored in ceramic materials is converted mainly to surface energy. However, at high temperatures, creep may also occur in such materials, in which case it will present a ductile behavior. This paper discusses the brittle-ductile transition of a refractory material. Stable crack propagation and creep tests were carried out under a three-point bending device. A commercial ceramic containing 63 wt-% of SiO2 and 31 wt-% of Al2O3 was used as testing material. The results revealed that the change in behavior from brittle to ductile was caused by softening of a vitreous phase present in the material's microstructure.

"PT International Nickel Indonesia, a subsidiary of Inco Limited, mines and processes nickel laterite ores for the supply of nickel matte, primarily to the Japanese market. It has large ore reserves and a substantial portion of its energy requirement is supplied from its own hydro-electric plant. Since the early 1980s, the company has increased its production level and has dramatically reduced its unit costs. Projects are in progress to further decrease costs and recently a major expansion - 31% increase in nominal capacity - has been undertaken, consistent with marketing opportunity in Japan. The expansion project, which has a low capital cost per unit of production, is outlined in this paper.IntroductionPT Inco is a fully integrated mining and smelting facility located in Indonesia on the island of Sulawesi, and is based on a very large, world class nickel laterite orebody located 60 km inland from the Gulf of Bone. Construction of a single furnace line plant started in 1973. Complete supporting infrastructure of townsite, hospital, schools, shopping centres, road systems, and an airport, all had to be built. Prior to completing the first phase, the decision to expand the plant to a three kiln-furnace line was made. A major factor in the decision was the ability to develop the hydroelectric potential of the nearby Larona River. This involved construction of a 30 m high dam, and a 7 km surface canal to the generating station. The penstocks drop 150m to three 55 Mw turbines. The power generated is sufficient to supply the entire electrical load for the complete smelting complex and town site. The unique capability to supply the high smelting energy requirements for a lateritic nickel ore by fully captive hydro power, has, over the past decade insulated PT Inco from the large upward swings in oil prices suffered by other lateritic nickel producers.Wet ore is first partially dried to 20% moisture in two co-currently fired rotary driers, screened on an internal trommel, and delivered to two dry ore storage buildings. The partially dried ore is calcined at 750°C and partially reduced in three large 100 m by 5.5 m kilns. Reduction is accomplished by lancing bunker C oil onto the ore bed at the discharge end of the kiln. The kilns are equipped with five air pipes with onboard blowers to gradually bum the combustible gases generated by the lance oil. The kilns were also originally equipped with two side burners to supply additional heat close to the feed end of the kiln. Calcined ore is transferred by 20 ton refractory lined containers to the furnace feed bins at the top of the smelter. Smelting is carried out in three 18 m diameter furnaces powered by 45 Mw transformers. Slag is skimmed at 1550°C through water cooled breast plates and removed to the slag dump by Haulmaster Carriers. Matte of 25% Ni, 1O% S, 65% Fe is tapped at 1350°C into the converter aisle. The iron is slagged in converters to produce a nickel sulphide matte at 80% Ni. Three rotary Kaldo converters were initially installed. The product matte is granulated, dried, and shipped in returnable rubber bags to Japan. Most of the matte is fluid-bed roasted to nickel oxide and then directly reduced in a second reducing fluid bed reactor at our facilities in Japan.The smelting complex was designed to smelt two million tonnes of dry ore per year, equivalent to 34 000 tonne nickel production at an ore grade of 2% Ni. The cost of the entire project including working capital was $900 million."

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an increasingly popular method for generating and managing facility information during the life cycle of a building, ranging from facility conceptualization, through design, construction and its operational life. Organizations involved in Facility Management (FM) have the opportunity to use BIM as a knowledge repository to document evolving facility information and to support decisions made by the facility managers during the operational life of a facility. This paper demonstrates the potential of using BIM to develop algorithms that automate decision making for FM applications. The potential of utilizing BIM as an analysis tool is demonstrated through the scenario of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system failure in an operating facility. In case of a typical HVAC malfunction today, facility occupants record complaints in a ticketing database maintained by the FM organization. Upon receiving notification of HVAC system failure, facility inspectors visit the location to confirm the reported failure. Upon confirmation, facility managers review building plans and specifications to develop a detailed plan of action to repair any HVAC components suspected of damage. Based on the plan of action, inspectors visit the facility to inspect and, in case of damage, repair the appropriate HVAC system components. These FM practices ? as currently implemented across the industry ? are labor intensive, time consuming, and often rely on unreliable and outdated information. To address these shortcomings, the authors propose an alternative methodology of HVAC fault detection in operational buildings. The authors implement an algorithm that leverages complaint ticket data and automates BIM to determine potentially damaged HVAC system components. Based on the list of HVAC components suspected of damage, the algorithm develops a plan of action for the facility inspectors. Finally, the authors discuss the advantages of the proposed method as well as the challenges of implementing automated BIM-enabled decision making processes in the FM industry.

"The Malartic gold camp includes the Malartic Gold Fields, Barnat, East-Malartic, Canadian Malartic and Sladen mines. From 1935 to 1984, these mines have yielded 212 403 kg of gold. They occur within a 900 m wide belt of highly sheared, dislocated and faulted volcanic and sedimentary rocks (Piché and part of the Pontiac groups) herein named the Malartic Tectonic Znne (MTZ). The zone trends WNW-ESE and separates two lithotectonic sedimentary domains, the Cadillac to the north and the Pontiac to the south. The sedimentary domains are characterized by their coherent fold generations consisting of open to tight reclined and recumbent F1 folds that have been refolded into series of asymmetric upright F2 folds. A flat-lying schistosity (S1 ) and a vertical pressure-solution cleavage (S2) are ubiquitous throughout. Discrete sets of brittle and brittleductile faults are synchronous and parallel to each of these two fabrics.The MTZ trends N320° in the northwestern sector of the town of Malartie, changing to N2800 at its easternmost extremity. The Malartie and Sladen faults constitute its northern and southern boundaries respectively. These two faults also bound another set of faults oriented N305°. Throughout the MTZ, the faults at N280° and N320° and those at N305° outline a series of anastomosed motifs that constitute the principal structural feature of the Malartic district. Locally, a fourth set of minor faults at N065° combines with the other three prominent sets. All these faults have disrupted the gold-bearing volcanic, sedimentary and intrusive rocks encountered throughout the MTZ.The MTZ comprises numerous lozenge-shaped blocks of komatiites and basalts or greywackes and black shales which are cut by disjointed dikes, sills and small intrusions of felsic and mafic rocks. The latter includes gabbro, diorite, lamprophyre, monzonite and pegmatite. They frequently fill conjugate sets of fractures. In some areas, they are clustered into coalescent intrusions. The present morphology of these intrusive bodies( cube, chocolate-tablet boudin, parallel epiped and cigar) is not representative of their primary forms but the result of late shearing and faulting indicative of a major tectonic event subsequent to their emplacement. The intrusions were injected during a brittle stage of deformation related to the F1 folding but prior to the development of the F2 folds and subsequent tearing and shearing by late brittle and brittle-ductile faults . The ultramafic and mafic rocks are intensely altered to serpentine, tremolite, actinolite, carbonate, biotite, hematite and pyrite according to the nature of their proto/it h. In the vicinity of the MTZ, all lithologies exhibit mineral assemblages indicative of the upper greenschist or lower amphibolite facies of metamorphism.The structural evolution of the MTZ involved superimposed folding, shearing, transposition, mylonitization, brittle and brittle-ductile faulting. Each lenticular motif results from the combined effect of conjugate sets of shear zones that outline lozenge-shaped blocks where strain markers indicate different strain states from cores to margins. Bedding in ultramafic flows and/or sedimentary rocks is either NW-SE or NE-SW within the blocks but, in the vicinity of the Malartie and S laden faults, it has been rotated to become subparallel to the faults.Ore shoots are most commonly associated with altered and deformed bodies of diorite and monzonite, or some mafic and ultramafic schists and, at the Canadian Malartic, Sladen and East Malartic mines, with metasedimentary rocks. The shoots occur in close proximity to the various faults of the MTZ but the gold itself is intimately associated with pyrite, biotite and carbonate in halos bordering fractures crisscrossing the different host rocks. Blasthole stoping methods were introduced at Birchtree Mine as an alternative to the original cut-and-fill and shrinkage stoping methods. The object was to take advantage of the ore structure and conditions, and achieve increased productivity. This paper outlines the design, operation and economics of three areas which utilized blasthole stoping. The 108areafrom 2300 level to 1500level was converted from cut-and-fill to sublevel blasthole stoping based on a block mining-and-filling sequence. The second area, the crown pillar of 110 mechanized cut-and-fill stope below 500 level, was recovered using horizontal rings drilled from raises within the ore zone. The third area, the 83 orebody from 1300 level to 1100 level, used the vertical crater retreat (VCR) method with large-diameter blastholes. Blasthole stoping has increased productivity and improved operating conditions.

A process scheme has been devised to improve the silver recovery and the grade of concentrates from the scavenger concentrate of a silver ore flotation circuit. Based on modal analysis studies it was found that silver sulfide minerals in the scavenger concentrate were associated as simple binary particles and finely disseminated in sulfide and non-sulfide gangues. Fine grinding of the concentrate improved the grade-recovery curve of silver to a very limited extent owing to heterocoagulation between liberated fine silver sulfides and coarse particles of gangue. This heterocoagulation phenomenon was prevented by grinding the concentrate in the presence of the dispersing reagent sodium hexametaphosphate. The silver grade-recovery curve was improved by practicing. before the conventional flotation step, a selective aggregation step for the fine silver sulfide particles using the non-polar oil kerosene, the sulthydryl collector Aerophine 3418 and conditioning the pulp under strong agitation conditions.

"The deportment of gold in residue samples of cyanide leach tests of David Bell ore from level 6A block 13 was established using a comprehensive quantitative mineralogical approach. In every test the feed was first pre-aerated for 4 hours, followed by 48h cyanidation. Test no. 2 was done without lead nitrate and yielded a residue assaying 3.03g Au/t. In test nos. 4 and 9 lead nitrate was added before pre-aeration at 0.03kg/t and 0.3kg/t respectively yielding residues of 1.04 and 0.81 g Au/t.The mineralogical approach employed to establish the deportment of gold involved superpanning, to preconcentrate the free gold and assaying of the tailing fraction to determine the gold associated with quartz. It was thus determined that without lead nitrate added 47.2% of the lost gold is in the form of residual free gold particles less than 20 µm in size. It is this form of gold which is under represented in the residues of leach tests with lead nitrate added.Having eliminated coarseness of gold particles as a factor for lower recovery, it was determined that the residual gold particles have extensively contaminated surfaces. Amongst the deleterious surface contaminants identified: S, As, Ag, Sb and Hg, the two most harmful are S and Hg because of their concentration on the surface and rate of accumulation.Mercury and Ag are minor constituents of native gold at David Bell (average composition Au: 78.9 wt%, Hg: 18.5 wt% and Ag: 2.6 wt%) and they become enriched on the surface of residual gold particles because of their slower rate of dissolution in cyanide. The other elements absorb onto the gold particles from solution.The beneficial effect of lead nitrate was documented by comparative surface analysis of gold from residue samples of 48 hour leach testing with and without lead nitrate added and from time dependent (0-2 hour) leach tests in the presence and absence of lead nitrate. Lead nitrate accelerates the dissolution of gold by performing the following functions: (i) catalytic effect on the cyanidation of gold by accepting electrons; (ii) reaction with surface sulphur to form PbS which is then removed by oxidation; (iii) catalytic reaction on amalgam and Ag facilitating the cyanidation of Hg and Ag thus slowing down their build up onto the dissolving gold particles and (iv) the precipitation of sulphide sulphur from solution thus minimizing its build up on the surface of dissolving gold particles which is believed to facilitate the access of cyanide ions."

A good understanding of the behavior of broken rock helps to make more informed decisions regarding slope stability and waste dump issues in mines. The cohesion coefficient of rock has little influence on the strength of broken rock; therefore, a criterion based on friction and cohesion of intact materials does not provide an accurate analysis for the strength of broken rock. This paper illustrates the effective strength of broken rock through a brief literature review about failure of intact rock and rock masses. The complete stress- strain curve and some important points of residual strength of rock are summarized in this paper.

Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell has increasingly become the potential choice of zero-emission power source for portable, mobile and stationary co¬generation applications. However, technical barriers need to be overcome before its widespread commercialization; cost reduction and performance improvement including reliability are the two key areas, that can be realized through better cell/stack design and improved understanding of the transport processes occurring inside the individual cells and stacks. In this presentation, we will provide an overview of various cell/stack models that are available in the literature, their strength and weakness, and then present a comprehensive multi-species, multi-phase and multi-dimensional formulation of a single PEM fuel cell, with consistent and systematic formulation for all the regions involved, including the solid bipolar plates, gas flow channels, the electrode backing layers, the catalyst layers and the electrolyte membrane. Such a detailed approach allows us to extract sufficient information to the analysis of a stack of PEM fuel cells. Stack model will be presented that investigates the various stack designs and flow configurations, and the optimal stack design based on the present study will be described. Also some innovative cell/stack designs will be featured.

Suncor Energy Inc. is an integrated producer and refiner of oil and gas headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. The bulk of revenue comes from the Oil Sands Group (OSG) operating in the McMurray formation of the Athabasca Oil Sands. Located some 25 kilometers north of Fort McMurray, Suncor OSG began life in 1967 as Great Canadian Oil Sands, the first operator to successfully enter commercial production of synthetic crude oils from the area. For most of the last decade, dramatic growth has been the standard mode of operation for Suncor OSG. Production of synthetic crude first reached 100,000 barrels per day in 1997 and less than five years later is averaging in excess of 200,000 barrels per day. Within this dynamic organization, Suncor Extraction is the business unit that processes run-of-mine ore into clean diluted bitumen for Upgrader feedstock. Extraction also delivers and places the barren sand and process affected water into tailings storage in one of several ponds from which water is recycled to support the various processes. For reference purposes, Extraction on a typical day currently receives more than 400,000 metric tons of oilsand ore, which is all processed to water based slurry for separation in one of two extraction plants. Separated tailings are disposed of as a slurry and the cleaned bitumen froth is diluted with naphtha and sent to tankage for storage until required by the Upgrading Unit. As a consequence, on a typical day Suncor Extraction pumps more than 1,000,000 tonnes of aggressive slurry into and out of the two extraction plants.

"These standards were developed by the CIM for use with the value or worth of a Mineral Property as opposed to “evaluation” where the key objective is an economic assessment or determination of the economic merit of a propertyP1 .0 BACKGROUNDPl.1 There are at present no comprehensive standards for valuation of Mineral Properties in the Canadian mining industry. In the late 1990s, a chemical process to remove mercury and selenium from weak sulphuric acid solutions was patented and implemented in the CEZinc refinery in Valleyfield, Quebec. The CEZinc process comprises two stages. In the first one, sodium sulphide is added to the weak acid solution in order to precipitate the soluble mercury. The solution is then treated with sodium dithionite in order to reduce the selenium to elemental form. Because of recent changes in the composition of the industrial solution, a project to study the background chemical reactions was started. In this paper, a review of the background chemistry is presented on the basis of several eh-pH diagrams on one hand, while on the other experimental results are reported dealing with the reaction of selenium (IV) species with either dithionite, sulphide or a combination of the two. According to this work, elemental selenium enjoys a wide pH-eh range stability with selenium sulphide being metastable. Selenium (IV) in single metal synthetic solutions was found to be reduced - to elemental state - at ambient temperature down to ppb range with dithionite as long as the stoichiometric ratio (dithionite/selenium) was in excess of two and the pH < 1.7. Under these conditions the reaction was very fast reaching completion within one minute. Sodium sulphide proved equally effective in reducing selenium (this time as selenium sulphide) to ppb range from single metal solutions. However, in mixed Se-Hg solutions deviations from this "ideal" behaviour was observed resulting in higher levels of residual soluble selenium left in solution.
