"The feasibility study determines the technical and economic viability of a project at the level of accuracy required by the owner to make an investment decision. The economic analysis usually includes calculation of the discounted cash flow. Key components of the cash flow include the project capital cost, the operating costs, construction schedule, production rate, product prices and financial details.This paper examines the feasibility study for a typical mining project. The paper discusses acceptable methods for the determination of the geological and mineable are reserves. The prerequisites for the development of suitable designs, and the calculation of capital and operating costs for the mine, processing plant, and infrastructure are reviewed. Important features of the cash flow analysis and its interpretation are presented.IntroductionThe commercial development of a mineral deposit invariably requires the investment of capital in preparing the deposit for production. It has always been necessary, therefore, to demonstrate to the investor of capital that production of a saleable commodity is both technically feasible and economically viable. The instrument typically used to make these determinations is the feasibility study .Traditionally, mining companies have been rather conservative in their approach to financial management. Until about thirty years ago, the capital required to develop a new mine was most frequently provided by internal corporate cash now and virtually all of the necessary technical and economic studies were performed 'in house'. Under these circumstances, there was little standardization as to what constituted an acceptable feasibility study, and even less as to what constituted an acceptable measure of economic viability."

Reducing SAG Mill feed size has been a major trend in recent years. ?Mine to mill? strategies have reduced blasted-rock size, and in a growing number of operations reducing the primary crusher CSS and/or adding additional crushing upstream of the SAG mill have reduced rock feed size. While reducing feed size will increase SAG mill throughput, issues arise in terms of retaining charge in the mill, exposing the shell lining to impact damage, and maintaining milling performance should the pre-crush system shut down. This paper reviews the past experience on pre-crushing for SAG mills and provides an analysis of liner design (in particular grates and shell liners) for pre-crushed feed.

Cigar Lake is one of the world’s largest high-grade uranium mines. The ore mined at Cigar Lake is milled at Orano Canada Inc’s (Orano) McClean Lake mill. The average Cigar Lake ore uranium grade since the start of mining activities in 2014 is 17.8% U (range 8– 28%). To achieve budgeted production of 18 M lbs U3O8/yr the required average feed tonnage to the mill is about 45 kt/yr. Arsenic, occurring as arsenides and sulpharsenides, is one of the major elements of concern associated with Cigar Lake ore. The leaching process is a sulphuric acid leach under oxidizing conditions at near atmospheric pressure. The presence of arsenic in the ore consumes oxidant in leaching as well as ferric sulphate in tailings preparation for arsenic sequestration. The average arsenic grade since the start of mining at Cigar Lake is 0.57% As. Further, the ore is hosted in a matrix of sandstone and clay, which results in poor settling in CCD. The average uranium grade for the balance of Cigar Lake Phase 1 ore is expected to drop to 12.5% U and the average arsenic grade is expected to increase to 1.6 % As, with an annual average peak of 2.5%. Therefore the tonnage throughput required to sustainably meet the production target will increase to 55 kt per year. Orano partnered with Hatch Ltd. (Hatch) to perform a gap analysis study to identify key circuits and equipment in the mill that would require debottlenecking. A METSIM mass balance model of the McClean Lake mill was generated and validated with actual mill operating data. Various feed scenarios were then studied, and the outcome was a traffic light table, which highlighted feed scenarios that exceeded installed capacity of major equipment and circuits. The results provided the basis for the PDC for the pre-feasibility study. This paper will outline the results of the gap analysis, the mass balance model, the feed scenarios and the study undertaken to prepare the McClean Lake mill for the change in ore quality from Cigar Lake.

Since the time when Canada's East and West were joined by the railway, and communication was established into the interior, settlements grew on the southern fringe of the great Precambrian area that formed the northern protaxis of the continent during its vicissitudes of growth. They clung precariously to the fringe of that ancient land, for the Precambrian is not generous to those who wish to live by the fruits of the soil, except in those limited areas where the Pleistocene ice-sheet has been profuse in its gifts of clay to cover the hard surface of the Precambrian rock. Later settlements spread westwards over the expanse of Cretacean plains that now form the wheatfields of the Canadian West; but there still remained in northern and western Ontario, in eastern and northern Manitoba, a pioneer race, to whom agriculture had attractions only in so far that it provided the wherewithal to lay siege to the riches of the Precambrian. And they had a vision beyond their time. More than they knew, they had seized the fact that for the complete rounding out of Canadian national life, a8 well as for the establishing of the necessary contributions towards the economic stability of Canada and its provinces, an industry in mining sh01.dd be well and truly built in the hinterland of the central provinces. Failing the winning of mineral from the rocks, and timber from the forests, there would remain between the East and the West an enormous barrier of unproductive country which would not only be an incubus to the agricultural people in their struggle for economic liberty, but would effectively, and for all time, remain an un-populated void across which the aspirations of East and West would be unable to unite.

"The QEMSCAN system is the third generation of automated mineral analysis systems that began with the QEM*SEM at CSIRO 30 years ago (Butcher et al. 2000). It is now a successful commercial instrument with 39 instruments in operation around the world. Back Scattered Electrons (BSE) and Energy Dispersive (EDS) X-Ray spectra are used to create digital mineral images with mineral identification occurring online. Low-count EDS spectra are used preferentially to BSE brightness, allowing minerals to be accurately identified by chemical composition. Individual minerals or groups of similar compositions are identified by comparison to a comprehensive mineral database incorporated into the QEMSCAN software. Optical mineralogy and Scanning Electron Microscopy is a metallurgists’ tool for determining the ore process mineralogy and delivering a better flowsheet. These techniques have limitations, provide limited information and sometimes fail to provide representative information. In contrast, QEMSCAN provides information on the nature and occurrence of all mineral species present plus the liberation characteristics, looking at thousands of particles in the sample presented. Some of the data presented includes:• Particle and grain sizes• Dominant mineral species• Particle shape• Calculated metal content• Density• Deportment of elements of interest between the mineral phases• Quantitative mineralogy• Mineral associations, locking and liberation• Textural relationships (particle images)It can also be used on concentrates, polished sections or drill core. This is a significant improvement in ore characterisation providing lithology, mineralogy, liberation, ore grade and porosity from a sample. Theoretical grade-recovery curves can be created to be mineralogically limited from QEMSCAN analysis which, when compared with metallurgical results, are valuable in evaluating whether liberation or chemical selectivity is driving flotation performance. A number of case study examples are given where the QEMSCAN had a significant bearing on future project development at an early stage of exploration and mine development."

"A description is given of a series of tests performed to determine the comparative effects which dynamic and static straining, in compression, have on the physical strength properties of mild steel and an aluminum alloy. The dynamic deformation was imposed during the passage of single stress pulses of about 100 micro-second duration. These pulses were recorded with strain gauges mounted near both ends of the specimen. The resulting records were analysed using a simple wave theory; there from the dynamic stress-strain curves for the respective metals were deter-mined and were then compared with the static stress-strain relation. The respective hardnesses of the metals after deformation are evaluates by means of static stress-strain curves in compression. The micro-structures of the metals before and after deformation are also shown. It is observed that dynamic de-formation considerably modifies the rate of strain hardening. This modified hardening appears to be persistent. The observed differences in physical strength properties and micro-structures are discussed in the light of the accepted dislocation theory for metals."

In a recent paper [1], the present authors discussed calculated energy consumption numbers in copper sulphide concentrate smelting for four different smelting technologies. For the present study, from among these technologies, they selected the Noranda/Teniente continuous bath smelting followed by Peirce Smith (PS) converting route to investigate the impact on total energy requirement of some key process variations, such as tuyere injection of dry concentrate vs. slingering of wet concentrate over the molten bath, continuous converting vs. conventional batch PS converting and commercially proven slag cleaning alternatives. In their calculations, the authors used the same thermochemical model and methodology used in their earlier paper. This approach to explore plant design options provides an interesting basis for evaluating flowsheet modifications that could lead to significant copper smelting energy savings. The METSIM software was used in the present paper to carry out heat and mass balance computations for 8 different flowsheet configurations. The results are presented and discussed in the paper with respect to copper recoveries, energy requirements and CO2 emissions.

The choice of tool for the first well of an oilfield or gasfield is an important factor, given that we will be drilling with the same type of tool for the entire phase and explains why we need to have another type for comparison based on the efficiency of the tool and its ability to crush the rock, and the wear of different types of tools. Development of theoretical and practical tests to determine the optimal regime for drilling is required to take into account the characteristics of rock layers crossed. Classification of boring tools is based on the geometry of the teeth and depends on the hardness, the abrasiveness of rocks as well as their hydraulic system, but it is better to classify them according to the working conditions with a coefficient designating a discriminant. This is called physical characteristic of the drilling tool. The goal is to designate each element of the tool by a coefficient. Results were obtained from laboratory tests. Modeling the initial rate of progress by different types of tools allowed us to determine an adequate mathematical model of the speed initial progress in clean conditions. Using experimental data and statistics we have established the mathematical model of the average speed of progress as a function of time. With these equations we can determine the wear evaluation and analysis of these factors as an approach to classification according to their characteristics. The main equations for the selection of drilling tools will be based on the optimization of drilling parameters for each type of tool. After analysis, we choose the tool that gives a better forward speed with an optimal load and axial rotation.

"IntroductionUNTIL the recent discovery and development of deposits at Allard Lake, on the Lower Romaine river, practically the whole of Quebec's - and indeed of Canada's - production of ilmenite had come from deposits in the vicinity of St. Urbain, Charlevoix •county, a village about eight miles north of Bay St. Paul on the north shore of the St. Lawrence, some sixty miles below the city of Quebec (see Figure l) . Although these deposits were known nearly three hundred years ago and were worked in a small way during the years 1872-74, when a charcoal blast furnace was operated by the Canadian Titanic Iron Company for making white pig iron, it was not until 1908 that more or less continuous production commenced and has •continued to the present by the American Titanic Iron Company. The whole of the output has been exported to the United States.The ilmenite occurs in lenses •and dyke-like bodies within anorthosite. Production has come chiefly from three deposits: General Electric, Furnace, and East and West Coulombe. During 1951 -52, an extensive diamond drilling programme was carded out under the direction of the writer to test the Furnace and the East and West Coulombe deposits (Figures 2 and 3), which form part of the property of St. Lawrence Iron and Titanium Mines, Limited. The average tenor of the orebodies encountered in the course of the drilling was 38.60 per cent TiO2 and, in addition to these high-grade •bodies, there was found a very considerable tonnage of lower grade ore."

"The flotation of a cassiterite ore with oleic acid will recover primary or rougher concentrates assaying over 10 per cent Sn, with a recovery of 80 to 90 per cent. These rougher concentrates cannot be up-graded to a marketable grade by normal reflotation. Experiments were conducted on low-grade tin ores, and a process was developed for up-grading the rougher flotation concentrates by a reverse flotation technique. The process was tested on a number of samples of ore from the Catavi mine in Bolivia. The results of these tests showed that a concentrate assaying 40 to 60 per cent Sn could be readily produced, with a recovery of 60 to 75 per cent of the tin in the ore."

This paper discusses three case studies conducted at Highland Valley Copper mine (HVC) that illustrate operational improvements and insights which resulted from using the McGill University gas dispersion sensors. In the first study, the superficial gas velocity (Jg) sensor was used to implement a gas profiling control strategy for the rougher, scavenger and first cleaner cells in the Cu/Mo separation circuit. The data showed a 40% reduction of down-the-bank Cu recovery at constant Mo recovery which resulted from operating the cells at the target profiles. In the second study, the bubble size analyzer was used to better understand two mechanisms of bubble formation in the two flotation columns that make up the final Mo cleaning stage: the conventional rubber-sleeve sparger and the Microcel(TM) system. The data showed a considerable reduction of bubble size in the Microcel column which resulted in a significant increase in concentrate quality (1-2% Mo absolute) and a dramatic (4-5 fold) increase in concentrate production rate compared to the typical operation. The estimated economic benefit resulting from the improved column flotation operation was an overall 4% increase in Mo circuit recovery. In the third study, real-time measurements obtained from the gas holdup and bulk density sensors were used to infer the pulp density (% solids) in a rougher cell of the bulk flotation circuit. Validation tests demonstrated that this approach provides reliable pulp density measurements. Although promising, more work is required before implementing this approach at HVC.

De Nora, a global leader in the development, manufacture and sale of all DSA® anodes based on titanium coated with mixed metal oxide (MMO) for electrochemical processes will present key advancements made to Self-Protected Anodes (SPA) for metal electrowinning. (DSA® is a registered trademark of Industrie De Nora S.p.A., Italy). In 2017 pre-commercial demonstration cells were operated in industrial environment. The program’s focus was to fully demonstrate the SPA anode’s superior mechanical and electrochemical robustness during normal and induced dendrite shorting occurrences while providing quality of plating in commercial operation. "It is well known that frothers affect the amount of water that is transferred to the froth, which has an effect on both the froth stability and the water recovery. On the other hand, since non-selective recovery by entrainment is directly related to water recovery, it can be said that frothers have an indirect effect on flotation selectivity. Recent research on this subject has shown that the non-selective recovery by entrainment, which is characterized by the entrainment factor, is frother dependent. In other words, the entrainment factor is not unique, but depends on frother type.Having different entrainment factors implies that for the same water recovery, the amount of undesired particles reporting to the concentrate may vary if one changes the frother type, which suggests, as a possible explanation, that it is not only the amount of water in the froth what is affected by frother type, but also the froth structure.The purpose of the current work is to study the effect of frother type on foam structure (two phase froth). A quasi-2D cell operated with a slot sparger was used to study the foam structure in the presence of three different frothers: Methyl Isobutyl Carbinol (MIBC), OrePrep®549, and Octanol at the same gas flow rate and reagent dosage. The foam structure was studied using image analysis, and an algorithm based on textural analysis was developed to classify the foams. The results show that it is possible to classify foams according to the frother used, which proves that frothers have an effect on the foam structure.INTRODUCTIONFrothers are usually dosed paying attention to froth stability, condition that is commonly estimated by sight, according to the operator's criteria and experience. This happens because there is not an established procedure or technique for frother characterization, generating qualitative descriptions such as “powerful” or “selective” frothers, which lack of scientific thoroughness and remain under subjective factors. Nevertheless, several works have been done in this line of research. Moyo et al. (2007) classified frothers based on their water-carrying capacity, proving that this characteristic is related with gas holdup and frother type. Previously, Trahar (1981) had related water recovery and gangue particles recovery, defining the entrainment value (ENT). Nowadays it is known that entrainment affects both hydrophilic and hydrophobic because it is not a selective process. In the last decade some studies (for example the one of Konopacka and Drzymala (2010)) delved into different entrainment behaviours dependent mainly on the flotation type (batch or continuous, agitated or columnar, etc.), but there were no studies on the effect of frother type regarding entrainment, since Rahal et al. (2001) argued that the ENT factor was independent of the frother type and concentration, and froth height."

Projects as regards state-of-the-art mechatronic systems aiming at increase of safety in the mining industry and at improvement of coal production technologies, which have been completed at the KOMAG Institute of Mining Technology, are presented. These projects cover automation, monitoring and visualization systems, systems for implementation of artificial intelligence techniques, and database recording systems. iRIS system for electronic marking, identification, and recording of components of powered roof supports, which was implemented in 31 Polish mining enterprises, is presented as an example of the work directly associated with an increase of operational safety. Specialists from KOMAG, ELSTA, Ltd., and Silesian University of Technology in Poland, have developed flexible, configurable, and scalable system for data management, which refers to all fixed assets of mining enterprises, meeting the requirements of users as regards marking and identification of fixed assets. The system for control of roadheaders using intelligent algorithms, based on artificial intelligence techniques is also the example of innovative actions. This system aims at increasing the safety and effectiveness of teamwork due to a possibility of remote, semiautonomous operation. Introduction of artificial intelligence technology enables adaptation of roadheader mining system to the present mining-and-geological conditions. Moreover, work aiming at implementation of state-of-the-art system for control of mine jig?s beneficiation node, integrating machines and equipment in one system, is carried out as regards automation, information integration, and visualization in coal beneficiation process. Work on recovery and conversion of thermal energy, which is a by-product during operation of machines and equipment, especially mine diesel drives, is presented. Systems for energy recuperation are more and more important due to the necessity of continuous increase of power production efficiency.

"The Mic Mac property comprises 994 acres held under mining concession and approximately 2,000 acres held under development licenses in Bousquet township, Abitibi county, western Quebec.Gold was first discovered in this locality by Tom Duval in June, 1936. In February, 1937, Cassels Duval Mines, Limited, was incorporated under Quebec charter to take over the property. In September, 1937, the property was examined by Agaura Explorations, Limited, and an option agreement was signed on October 6th, 1937. In June, 1938, an option for complete ownership was taken on adjoining claims belonging to Norgold Mines, Limited, and in September, 1938, a mining plant was installed and the sinking of a 3-compartment shaft begun. In June, 1939, an option was taken by Mic Mac Explorations, Limited, on seven claims of Mooshla Gold Mines Company, Limited, that adjoined the Norgold block to the east. In December, 1939, a new company, Mic Mac Mines, Limited, was formed, amalgamating the Cassels Duval, Norgold, and Mooshla claims, as well as two claim groups to the west of the mine known as the Vaughan and West Cassels groups."

Among the many interesting problems of the pre-Cambrian of the Canadian Shield is that of the origin of certain types of gneisses which are intimately associated with the granites on the one hand and with the metamorphic rocks of known sedimentary origin on the other. The observations recorded in this paper on the structure and composition of these ancient rocks found in a small part of northern Quebec may help to lead to a clearer understanding of the way in which they were formed and also constitute a contribution to the regional geology and petrography of a district for which little detailed information is available. The area considered is located near the Ashuapmuchuan, or Chamuchuan, river about 180 miles north-northwest of the city of Quebec, and therefore well within the Canadian Shield. Although most attention was devoted to the rocks along this river from the 57th to the 70th mile above its entrance into Lake St. John, a few observations on other localities to the north and northwest of that lake will be included. The field work was done in the summer of 1924 in cooperation with L. W. MacNaughton, E. S. Roberts, and B. M. Shaub, all of Cornell University. The party ascended the Ashuapmuchuan river by canoe and spent about a month near the mouth of Stacker, or Brochet, river, the outlet of the lake of the same name, returning by way of Mikoasas river. The writer wishes to express his obligation to his associates for their co-operation in the field and for their permission to publish the results. He is especially indebted to B. M. "This Precious metals content copper scrap is treated with a copper smelting process, and copper and precious metals are recovered. The precious metal lost in the slag is increasing with increasing of treated scrap amount. To determine the portion of the precious metals chemically dissolved and that associated with the mechanically trapped matte in the slag will be a key factor to improve the recovery of those metals. The distribution of precious metals between copper matte and FeOx-SiO2 slag phases is determined at 1300 oC and a fixed partial pressure of SO2 of 0.1 atm for the matte grades from 40 to 70 mass% of copper. The distribution ratios show a tendency to increase when the grade of matte is increased. In addition, the solubility of platinum and rhodium in the FeOx-SiO2-CaO slag under the air and the solubility of platinum in the FeOx-SiO2 slag equilibrated with a pure platinum or the Pt-Cu alloy were determined at 1300oC in the range of oxygen partial pressure from 10-9 to 10-7. The solubility of platinum and rhodium in the slag tends to increase with increasing content of copper in the slag and oxygen partial pressure. INTRODUCTIONThe stringency of the supply and demand of platinum group metal (PGM) intensifies by localization for resources and increase of the demand for PGM, furthermore, smelting and the recycling of PGM in the nonferrous smelting process take an important role. Scrap containing a precious metal for the purpose of collection of PGM is treated by copper smelting recently. With increase of the treatment amounts, loss of PGM in slags is the serious problem.In considering of PGM loss in slags, knowledge of the distribution behavior for PGM between slag and matte phases or slag and copper phases and the PGM solubility in slags is important. The distribution ratios of silver and gold between the FeOx-SiO2 slag and the Fe-Cu matte were reported by Roghani (Roghani et al., 2000), Shinha (Shinha et al., 1985) and Takeda (Takeda et al., 1993) However, there is no data for the PGM distribution ratio. On the other hand, the PGM solubility in slags was reported by Sano (Sano et al., 1997) However, there is very few report for the solubility of PGM in the nonferrous smelting slags."

"During the excavation of underground galleries in a rock mass, reorganisation of the stress field around the site results in damage to the surrounding material. In the framework of research undertaken at the ANDRA underground laboratory in France, galleries have been excavated in a Callovo-Oxfordian argillite formation. The damage has manifest as a number of fracture systems in the adjacent rock. Observations have shown that fractures generated during excavation and storage exploitation are able to self-seal during re-saturation of the site in the post-closure stage. Although indirect evidence for argillite self-sealing has previously been reported, from experiments performed both in situ and on samples, no direct observations of self-sealing have yet been made.For the present study, we performed a range of self-sealing experiments using a newly-developed triaxial compression cell placed within a nano-CT scanner with a 10 µm resolution. The body of the compression cell is X-ray transparent, allowing sample healing to be monitored directly. The samples contained an artificial fracture that had been generated in the laboratory, into which a fluid was injected. The fractures were orientated either perpendicular or parallel to the plane of anisotropy of the material. Our initial results demonstrate that when fluid is injected perpendicular to the plane of anisotropy, the flow-rate has no apparent influence on the kinetics of fracture closure. Permeability varies significantly, from 2.10-14 to 2.10-18 m2 over 116 hours. Post-test observations of the fracture lips show swelling that appears to be orientated perpendicular to the fracture plane and therefore parallel to the plane of anisotropy. Initial results for an injection parallel to the plane of anisotropy suggest that, in this case, the rate of flow affects the kinetics of fracture closure. For a flow-rate of 0.25 ml/min, closure begins after around one minute. In contrast, for a rate of 0.05 ml/min, it is necessary to wait several minutes before partial sealing of the zone is observed. The reduction in permeability is again significant, from 2.10-15 to 4.10-18 m2 over 96 hours. After completion of the test, swelling was observed in elongated zones that lie parallel to the fracture plane and therefore to the plane of anisotropy."

Determination of the nonlinear behavior of multivariate dynamic systems often presents a challenging and demanding task. Therefore, complex geomechanics systems are an ideal area for the application of intelligent methods. Often the physical problem is controlled by nonlinear equations, conveying to the use of neural networks. Hudson, (1992a), aiming at efficient engineering modelling and design, introduced and developed Rock Engineering Systems (RES) approach, through the implementation of generic interaction matrix GIM. This approach has been used for a wide variety of rock engineering and other problems, resulting in many case studies available, which illustrate the application of RES to rock engineering problems. Considering the spectrum of the coding methods for the Generic Interaction Matrix, we suggest an objective coding approach. Among the five proposed coding GIM methods, the coding method according to the slope of Pi and Pj relation is relatively accurate, but it might be difficult or impossible to establish or estimate the exact relation of Pi vs Pj for most of the variables involved within a rock engineering system. Self organising maps, are a special type of unsupervised artificial neural networks, which can learn from complex, multidimensional data, and transform them to visually decipherable clusters. The proposed, coding of the GIM, is performed through the combined use of scatter plots produced through, (SOM), and the coding according Pi vs Pj slope. Naghadehi et al., (2013) constructed a database of worldwide experience, in open-pit mine slope stability, the selection of the principal factors was based on Hudson (1992a) who proposed an ‘atlas’ of factors affecting the stability of rock slopes. Slope classification was performed according to status of stability. The rating of the GIM matrix was completed, coupling scatter matrix produced by SOM training, and Pi vs Pj slope plot. Results refer to the identification of clusters, according to status of stability within the original multivariate data set, and the rating of the principal factors according to the dominance and interaction intensity within the open pit mines RES.
