Magnetic scanning type mass spectrometers have been given improved sensitivity with a large dynamic range and considerable resolution by the addition of a computer-controlled electric equipment. A mass spectrometer equipped with this newly developed electric system was applied to studies of the activities of liquid iron-silicon alloys and of liquid iron-phosphorus alloys at 1600¦C. The range of silicon concentration was 5.8at%-51.1 Si= at%, and values of ySi -3.1+0.15 and es 11.5 +1.5 were obtained. The concentration range of phosphorus was 1.3at%-5.7at% and a value of eP=7.3+0.1 was obtained.

Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) operates the Mount Isa open cut and underground copper (Cu) and zinc-lead (Zn/Pb) mines near Mount Isa in Queensland, Australia. Tailings from processed Cu and Zn-Pb ore is contained in a 1,315 ha shallow (< 35 m deep) multi-cell valley fill tailings storage facility (TSF). Static geochemical testing conducted by MIM over the life of mine (LoM) verifies that the Cu, and Zn-Pb tailings has a wide range in sulfide content and diverse mineralogy with significant acid neutralising capacity (ANC) in some samples. The tailings are predominantly classified as potentially acid forming (PAF) using static analytical methods. Kinetic leach testing using free draining columns and humidity cell tests simulating tailings placed on the surface of the TSF suggest that the tailings samples are likely to remain non-acid forming (NAF) for 10 to 40 years under aerial exposure, and much longer than this under saturated conditions within the TSF. During this period of weathering, as ANC is depleted, the neutral pH drainage may contain elevated concentrations of some elements including sulfate, manganese and zinc. The Granites Goldfield is located 550 km northwest of Alice Springs. Mineralisation was discovered in 1900 and intermittently worked along nine km of strike until the early 1950's, yielding a recorded production of 470 kg of gold. The geological environ- ment, pre-existing exploration drilling results, and an optimistic view on gold, prompted acquisition of the property by North Flinders Mines Limited in 1975. An agreement was signed with the Central Land Council in August 1983 and drilling commenced in the same month. In the past, gold was won from alluvial deposits, rich quartz veins and lower grade, disseminated stratabound mineralisation. The last is contained within a distinctive unit in the Mt. Charles Beds, of the Early Proterozoic Tanami Complex. This informally named "Host Unit" is a metamorphosed, chemical- pelitic sediment. The schist contains variable proportions of amphibole, quartz, garnet, clinopyroxene, carbonate and sulphide, inter- calated with recrystallised chert beds. Free gold occurs in several mineralised horizons within the Host Unit, generally conformably distributed within lithologic bands or at lithologic contacts. The Host Unit occurs within a sequence of metamorphosed pelitic sediments and intermediate volcanics. Although mostly confined to the Host Unit, stratabound gold mineralisation also exists in both Footwall and Hanging Wall Schists, usually within zones displaying certain Host Unit characteristics. The deposits may be loosely categorised as being of banded iron formation (bif) type, although some important differences are noted between them and classical bif type orebodies.

In situations where foundation piles are located in proximity to existing or future tunnels, it is typical for the tunnel owner to require that sleeving of the piles be carried out to at least the invert of the tunnels to minimise any load transfer to the tunnel lining. In competent rock, this practice may be sometimes unnecessary, thus uneconomical. This paper presents an assessment of the effect of pile loading from one of the multi-storey buildings at Barangaroo South in Sydney on the adjacent future Sydney Metro tunnels. It was originally required by Transport for NSW (TfNSW) that the piles be sleeved below the tunnel invert level; however, the building developer wanted to reduce the pile sleeving depth to achieve a more economical solution due to the large number of load transfer piles being required for the project. To assess this feasibility, a full 3D commercial numerical code, FLAC3D, was used to carry out this complex soil-structure interaction analyses. Based on these assessments, it was demonstrated successfully to the TfNSW that the pile sleeving may be terminated at 2 m above the tunnel invert level. For this arrangement, the investigations found that the loading on the piles should have negligible adverse impact on the tunnel lining design. As a result of such an assessment, the proposed pile sleeving level was approved by TfNSW, thus offering an economical foundation solution for the project.CITATION:Azad, F M, Oliveira, D A F and Wong, P K, 2014. Chance find of an economically important mineral on the sur- face and its exploitation without proper exploration work, has become the habit of humanity since the Bronze Age. The explora- tion and exploitation techniques have, however, been substan- tially improved in the technologically developed western world and system controlled major communist countries. Nevertheless, the greatest need is felt in the Third World countries where large mineral potential exists, but with inadequate investments in exploration and exploitation techniques, a handicap that has been beneficial to the more developed countries, since long. The great number of the Third World countries which are striv- ing hard to develop, need to formulate mineral exploration and exploitation strategies which could enable them to develop their resources. This requires planning and creating new concepts of ore deposit types and genetic models, rheology, economics and their innovation and integration. The following approach could help them to be economically "more independent" by the end of this century. 1. Bridging of pure and applied geology gap, and creating con- sciousness of research and development. 2. Revision of mineral resources concepts adopted to modern technological world. 3. Improved mineralogical research, and determinative miner- alogy as an important asset. 4. Creative research and establishing know-how, with philosophical base for regional exploration projects. 5. Indepth investigation into the origin and growth of earth as a system, and its importance in the association, quality, and quantity of metallic, non-metallic and energy resources con- centrations. 6. Mineral beneficiation, targets and strateties; methods of eco- nomic and improved recovery systems. Development of alter- native technology, and utilization of mineral technology strategies. 7. Theoretical and practical modelling by conventional and com- puter techniques of the existing and expected mineral resources, and mineral development. 8. A mining operation can be identified as demonstrating prudent management when a number of vital characteristics are evident.All risks and opportunities that are critical to the on-going success of the operation have been identified and are being effectively managed. All significant tasks and events are plan driven. All levels of management visibly support the policies of the operation through their attitude, behaviour and actions as well as words. Supporting evidence for required activity and the outcomes is readily available. Improvement mechanisms are working to advance the key business processes. Everyone is working towards satisfying the needs of the stakeholders of the operation. When these characteristics are integrated with the satisfaction of all legislative requirements, all industry codes and optionally all relevant international management system standards then an operation is fulfilling all the requirements of a Due Diligence Process. The majority of mining operations do not show all of these characteristics and therefore unnecessarily suffer from missed profit opportunity and constant cost pressure, less than acceptable safety and health and environmental performance and consequent poor relations with employees, unions and regulators. In these operations the characteristics to be observed are quite different.Serious incidents are occurring with no sign of a rate decrease. The operation lurches from one panic ituation to another. Management are absent in their leadership, but very active in developing rules and enforcement methodologies. The operation has no history. Re-inventing the wheel with employees who come and go at an alarming rate seems to be forever occurring. All efforts are directed at controlling the business outputs with a strong emphasis on blame. Everyone is trying to look busy to avoid the ever-present cost reduction threats. To change to more prudent management utilising a Due Diligence Process is not theoretically difficult. However it does take clear direction, focussed efforts, supporting actions with appropriate tools and perhaps most importantly an internal desire and drive to become such an operation. A Due Diligence Process is about doing the important things that have to be done, providing the understanding of why they are important, demonstrating proof of activity and effectiveness, and leading the way through effective management.

A number of gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, water vapour, nitrous oxide, ozone and chlorofluorocarbons are transparent to incoming short-wave radiation, but are relatively opaque to outgoing longwave radiation. Variations in the concentration of these gases in the troposphere can alter the thermal balance of the earth's atmosphere. Outgoing terrestrial radiation which would otherwise escape to space, is trapped within the inner layer of the atmosphere, resulting in a greenhouse effect. It is estimated that at present greenhouse gases other than carbon dioxide, contribute about 50% to the greenhouse effect. However, in the future, the contribution made to the greenhouse effect by gases other than C02 will become increasingly more significant. Greenhouse gases arise from a wide range of sources and their escalating increease is largely related to an increase in the world's population, an increase in the standard of living of many areas and changes in lifestyle. The effect of increasing man-made greenhouse gases in the troposphere is unknown but it is proposed that it may increase temperature and may modify climate, agricultural response and land use. The sources of greenhouse gases are identified and found to comprise a wide range of activities. The contribution that coals use makes to the greenhouse effect is examined in detail. It is concluded that coals total contribution is small being about 10% of man made greenhouse gases. Envisaged expansion of coal's use will only cause a small increase in greenhouse gas emissions. Whilst developing technology for coal's use for power generation has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from new plants by approximately 25%.

Carbon rich graphite deposits found in Sri Lanka are of inorganic origin and they occur as narrow steeply dipping veins. The vein width of these deposits varies from a few centimetres to metres, with an average vein thickness of 1 m. It is believed that the carbon rich fluid intruded into fracture zones under high pressure and the temperature has crystallised into graphite. This process has also generated many minuscule graphite veins centred on main mineralisation, which has reduced the host rock overall rock mass rating. These discontinuities could also be considered as joints with graphite infill. Graphite mining at Bogala Mines, Sri Lanka is a unique example of narrow vein mining faced with numerous wall stability issues resulting from weak graphite infilled joints.The Bogala vein type graphite orebody has an average vein width of 1 m. Overhand cut-and-fill mining method is used for stoping. The stope consists of two boundary winzes for material handling, access and ventilation. Mining is done on the strike of the vein and the average mining slice height is 2 m. A void to the height of one mined slice is left below the mining level during mining. Waste rock resulting from vein blasting and mine development is dropped into this void as fill rock. Any void height left greater than a single slice height will increase stresses in the stoping zone. This will increase formation of rock blocks and their effective separation from wall rocks. Split miniscule veins occurring around main mineralisation intensifies rock block formation in an environment of mining induced stress release. Consequently, any rock blocks sliding into stopes on graphite infilled joints will behave under constant normal stiffness (CNS) conditions and their shear strength will converge rapidly towards remoulded shear strength of graphite alone. Unlike with general infill deposited in joints, graphite has a very low friction angle and with its slippery nature, a small thickness may affect in great deal to reduce joint shear strength.In addition to immediate filling of excavated voids, controlled vein blasting and spot bolting have improved mine safety. Furthermore, rock bolts connected to each other through iron plates and anchored to anchor bolts installed in non-fractured solid rock are practiced to stabilise rock falls and wedge failures in narrow vein graphite mining. The traditional engineering approach to assessing stability is based on comparing resisting force (capacity) to driving force (demand), or strength to working stress. In underground coal geomechanics, considerable effort has been expended on quantifying the strength of rock structures. However, this has not been matched by advances in determining the load acting on these structures, reflecting a reluctance by some to embrace numerical modelling to assess load magnitudes and distributions. Numerical modelling is a valuable aid as loading environments are a function of both the stiffness of the mine workings and the stiffness of the superincumbent strata and are statically indeterminate in most cases.This paper defines stiffness, which is often confused with elastic modulus. It shows that, effectively, stiffness encapsulates geology, depth of mining, panel width, pillar width and mining height. Therefore, these factors are variables that need to be taken into account when determining stress magnitudes and distributions about mine workings. A range of examples are presented that illustrate the significance of the stiffness of the superincumbent strata on surface subsidence; the magnitude and distribution of pillar and abutment load; and aspects of bord and pillar mining, pillar extraction and longwall mining. These examples provide bases for identifying the limitations of some empirical approaches to mine design, identifying how to compensate for some of these in design processes; and emphasising the need to make greater use of numerical modelling in understanding and quantifying loading environments in underground coal mining.CITATION:Galvin, J M, 2014. The present situation in the field of iron ore pelletizing is briefly described with particular view of the Lurgi/Dravo travelling grate process. To meet todays pellet quality requirements with regard to physical and metal- lurgical properties it is often necessary to add basic fluxing materials. It has been de- monstrated that for certain ores, basic addi- tives provide a considerable improvement in fired pellet quality. The production of self- fluxing pellets is becoming increasingly attractive. One Lurgi/Dravo plant is now in operation and another is under construction which were designed for the production of self- fluxing pellets. Self-fluxing pellets may be considered as the primary or exclusive blast furnace burden and the installation of a sinter plant is not necessary if the pellet plant-can handle all in-plant fines. Reference is made to the first pellet plant utilizing iron ore concentrate, in-plant fines and basic flux. The use of solid fuel for pellet indura- tion is discussed because of the increasing prices and possible shortages of heavy oil and natural gas. Since there is a strong tendency to increasing plant capacities, the design fea- tures of travelling grate pelletizing plants for productions up to 6 million tonnes are Discussed.

This paper deals with innovative techniques that have enabled personal computers to be used on the mine site to define, develop and manage an ore body resource, while being aware of the consequences to the environment. The same set of personal computer tools that are used for resource estimation, once the province of expensive workstations, can also be used by geologists, mining engineers, surveyors and environmentalists, in managing the whole mining process, including production, grade control, monthly reconciliation and stockpile management through to tailings the management, mine rehabilitation and the due diligence process of mine closure.

Impact-induced rock fragmentation is a mechanism that is commonly used for rock breakage in drilling and crushing. Additionally, rock fragmentation by blasting is frequently used in rock excavation operations. Experience shows that the presence of discontinuities can significantly influence the impact-induced damage and fragmentation of rock. Quantification of the response of jointed rock masses to impact loads is complicated by the fact that the available laboratory tests are mainly designed for aggregates or intact rocks. It can be argued that neither of these tests adequately represent a jointed rock mass. This paper presents the results of a series of numerical simulations used to investigate the influence of pre-existing discontinuities on the impact-induced fragmentation of rock masses. The methodology includes determination of the static and dynamic mechanical properties of a rock unit by conducting a series of laboratory tests on intact rock samples collected from a quarry in Canada. A 2D distinct element code, Particle Flow Code, was used to generate a bonded particle model in order to simulate both static mechanical properties (uniaxial compressive strength, elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio and indirect tensile strength) and dynamic mechanical property (drop weight tensile strength) of the intact rock. The calibrated numerical model was then used to construct large-scale synthetic rock mass samples by incorporating discontinuity networks of different intensity into the bonded particle model. Finally, the impact-induced fragmentation inflicted by a rigid projectile particle on the jointed rock mass samples, simulated by a synthetic rock mass model, was determined. In the upper coal surface in the Latrobe Valley, craters known locally as fireholes have developed due to prehistoric coal fires. They can be several hundred metres across and up to fifty metres deep, and are now filled with overburden materials varying from hard baked clays to very soft lacustrine clays. In addition to reducing coal reserves, continuous mining operations are seriously affected by fireholes. Large undulations in the upper coal surface result in a mixture of coal and overburden on the upper mining levels. The very soft lacustrine clays are unstable in the mine batters and the overburden dump, are difficult to handle on the bucket wheel excavator/conveyer system, and have insufficient bearing capacity for the large bucket wheel excavators. Early identification is essen- tial and both drilling and dynamic core penetrometer have been exten- sively used. However, this has not proved adequate in locating and defining the extent of all fireholes, due largely to their irregular shape. To overcome this a range of geophysical techniques has been trialled with very promising results. A trial area has been covered on a twenty metre grid using gravity and Geonics EM34 conductivity measurements and the same area has been covered at a closer spacing with high resolution magnetics. Image processing of contoured magnetic, EM34 conductivity and residual gravity data has resulted in very good correlation with drilling data.

The Department of Mineral Resources is the lead agency in mine site environment management and control in New South Wales. The Department introduced a Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Plan (MREMP) process several years ago in order to integrate the activities of other government agencies who may have a material interest at the mine site. The MREMP process has resulted in a spirit of trust and co-operation between agencies and between agencies and mining companies. The spirit of co-operation has been reflected in greater public confidence that mining is environmentally responsible.

Intorducing the hypothesis that the cause ,òi spontaneous combustion of coal is depending un the accumulation of heat produced by its oxidation, the authors derived the equation expressing the temperature change in a heap i fine coal. To solve the equation, thermal conductivity, specific heat and rate of heat ,eneration of fine coal (-48 mesh) were measured at various temperatures in the range _'0-65¦C. The equation was solved numerically and the volume of fine coal which would ignite spontaneously was estimated as the function of ambient temperature. Using 170 Kg of fine coal, everal experiments for confirmation were conducted. At the ambient temperatures of 60¦C nd 50¦C, coal began to fire spontaneously brut 00 and 110 hours later respectively. The Australian underground coal mining industry is undergoing major changes. This paper analyses the technologies presently being researched in mines, and discusses their utilisation as major contributors in the underground mining of coal in Australia over the next 20 years. It describes the problems that underground mining of the year 2000 will face and the possible solutions to those problems based upon results of present day research. Methods, equipment and organisational requirements are outlined. Developments in micro-electronics, computerisation and monitoring will require a new look into human resource development, education and training, and organisation to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The mining system's philosophies of the future are Outlined.

The Earth's Upper Mantle is dominantly peridotitic but in convergent margin regions, such as the S.W. Pacific, subduction of oceanic crust gives greater chemical and petrological diversity to upper mantle petrology and petrogenesis. Examination of currently active, Quaternary and Tertiary volcanism in the S.W. Pacific, particularly seeking information from ocean floor sampling to characterize the basement to island arcs and to investigate active spreading centres, consistently points to parental magmas of basaltic to picritic character. However, these parental magmas are chemically diverse and it is not possible to designate a characteristic 'island arc' or 'convergent margin' petrogenesis in the sense of a characteristic mantle source composition and a charactistic partial melting regime. In this respect, magma genesis at convergent margins contrasts with that at oceanic spreading centres. Our studies emphasize the importance of source peridotite ranging from 'fertile lherzolite' (i.e. compositions with 3-4% CaO, A12O3, 0.3-0.5% Na2O) to refractory harzburgite (

In presenting the paper, Mr. Davey quoted subsequent work which yielded k, at miscibility gap composition, of about 50.We can confirm the authors' findings for k j 300 for nearly pure tin to k 2 about 50 (average 47) from our own experience and from repeat experiments on materials described by the authors, at 1150°C.During laboratory-scale trials we also found confirmation of the authors' view that it is more difficult to reach equilibrium from the high-iron (in slag) side than from the low-iron (high-tin) side. Working from the high-iron side tends to yield results that point to a high k, leading to optimistic values of iron/tin ratio in final slags. In practice the smelting of a tin concentrate, unless it is exceptionally low in tin and high in iron, must yield initially a tin-rich slag and therefore equilibrium can only be reached from the "tinny" side.
