Resolution Copper Mine in Arizona, USA, is planned to be a 2000 m deep panel cave mine with virgin rock temperatures exceeding 80¦C in rock with high crystalline silica content, resulting in a very challenging ventilation and cooling system design. This is one of the largest copper orebodies ever found and, with a planned rock production rate of 120 kton/day. The project is currently in its prefeasibility phase and the paper discusses features of the ventilation and cooling system design which includes multiple ventilation shafts with total primary ventilation flow of about 3000 m3/s and both surface and underground refrigeration plants producing more than 140 MW refrigeration capacity. The cooling system features large surface bulk air coolers chilling all downcast air supplemented by an underground secondary air cooler system and a chilled service water system. The next best after Australia are the United Kingdom, West Germany and France.How we achieved such a high standard of living is a vast subject for study but some of the economic aspects of our climb from abject poverty to a position of near affluence can readily be identified.

On any given mine site the water system is contingent upon its initial design. Through time the initial design is adjusted by a myriad of water management options in order to improve water system performance or to adapt to a new production capacity or method at the mine site. These options generally do not comprehensively consider energy requirements, so it is unlikely that any given mine water system will be optimised in terms of both water and energy uses. Thus this may simply shift constraints of efficiency of one resource dimension, water, to another, energy. As a result, changes in water systems would cause more energy-related issues to mining companies. For example, the companies would have an increase in operational cost and/or pay more for carbon tax with changes in their water system. Therefore, in order to avoid undesirable and potential unforseen energy and infrastructure issues in a mine life cycle, it is essential to select suitable water management options for a mine considering both water and energy resources simultaneously.Considering water and energy criteria in evaluating water management options consists of net water volume availability, net operational energy demand and net water replacement energy demand. Ideal water management options should be high in water volume availability but low in both operational energy demand and water replacement energy demand. A water option would also be favourable if it has low potential of causing adverse environmental impacts such as lowering groundwater tables due to groundwater withdrawal, or elevating saline constituents in surface waters when reusing brine for dust suppression. However, these environmental impacts are not considered in this analysis.This article presents a graphical method to assess mine water management options, based on these three criteria. The proposed method to assist in screening mine water management options includes two main steps:1. categorise water management options into prioritised groups2. rank the options within each prioritised group.The method is applied to a gold mine and presented in this article as a worked example. Due to the high energy consumption of milling, it is desirable to improve the efficiency of this process. One alternative to reduce energy and material consumption while optimising production yield in mill operation is through balanced design and selection of liners. Over-design of liners leads to increased life but at a cost to grinding performance, a relationship which to date has not been studied closely. This paper provides a description of this process of liner life cycle optimization and presents initial results from the first of two life cycles being studied for a 32 foot (ft) SAG mill. The use of commercially proven high resolution laser scanning based liner shape information provided by the MillMapper® software correlated with well controlled site surveys at various points in the liner life was used as the basis for comparison. The survey data was modelled in JKSimMet to provide direct comparisons of mill performance. This potentially provides a methodology for the design of liners that maintain a favourable shape for the majority of liner life, yielding desirable production parameters such as lower specific energy consumption and higher throughput, while at the same time maintaining practical liner life cycles.

The energy supply in the 21st century is still secured by coal. According to estimates of the International Energy Agency (IEA), coal will have the same importance as oil for the world-wide supply of energy until 2030. Coal is also an important element of EU policy, its future use is closely linked to effectively addressing the environmental challenges it poses. Hard and brown coal represent approximately 80 per cent of European Union (EU) reserves of fossil fuels and coal utilisation can co-exist with the development of power generation based on renewables. Europe is the world's third largest consumer of coal behind China and the United States.The Czech Republic is poor in energy resources except for coal. Brown coal is relatively abundant (mineable reserves estimated at 1800 Mt, output 48 Mt/a) and significant quantities of hard coal (mineable reserves 900 Mt, 13 Mt/a), much of it suitable for coke production, are also present.Severoceske Doly (SD Company), the biggest Czech coal mining company (22 Mt/a, 48.6 per cent Czech market share) and one of the biggest in Europe, reinforces despite the last deep crisis in the Czech and European economies its long-standing stable and strong market and financial position. From 2009, the SD Company co-owns, with partners, a brown-coal mining company MIBRAG (21 Mt/a). SD Company invests in large mining equipment (eg new giant spreaders and bucket-wheel excavators, extension of overland belt conveyors), rebuilds and upgrades mining and processing installations, auxiliary and other machinery. We should see the investment we make today in tomorrow's mining and reclamation as an opportunity and not as a burden. They enable to make our position more resistant in the longer term. Projects focused on the environment and operational safety went hand in hand with these efforts.R&D activities relate to technical innovations, improvements of mining equipment, research and evaluation of conditions for extracting coal seam and/or overburden and mitigation of environmental impacts, utilisation of coal in new products. The company spends considerable amounts on reclaiming affected land and creating a new post-mining landscape.Our dialogue with influential stakeholders in the region where we operate contributes to the long-term improvement in the quality of life of local residents. Such dialogue with communities in the last ten years has been instrumental for confidence building. SD Company helps to develop many projects of towns and villages in its vicinity. The stable and transparent relations with our neighbours are in accordance with our basic principles of corporate social responsibility.

So many ceramics look the same, but are they?In the past 20 years, there have been significant changes in the materials available, as well as changes to the supply chain, for ceramics used in wear applications in the hard rock mining industry. The biggest change in supply has been from the Chinese market, with many suppliers promoting their products as æstate of the artÆ. Some of them are state of the art, but are they all? There will be some concluding remarks in this respect.There are still some outstanding new developments coming from the more traditional suppliers and these should not be ignored. However, as an end user, how can one be sure that the product received meets the technical specifications of that material?This paper will address some of the questions on how to differentiate between different materials by giving a technical overview of the current (but not exclusive) range of popular ceramics, plus incorporating how these ceramics are used in process plant products by presenting case studies. The presentation will include technical data coupled with micrographs of various ceramics to illustrate just why they are different.It will also be shown that by careful selection of the wear material, it is possible to gain significant benefit when using superior materials in an ore processing plant. The impact of cost of the products, life, process efficiency, and reduced maintenance costs will be considered using cyclone components as an example.The properties (including the microstructures) of the various ceramics will be compared to the application in order to get some understanding of what is considered good or bad.Misra and Finnie (1982) summarised their paper, æA review of Abrasive Wear of MetalsÆ by saying:à it is difficult to give guidelines for selecting materials for abrasive wear resistance. Each application is a different one, and a design engineer has to take into account various other factors such as impact, fatigue and corrosion which are often coupled with abrasive wear. The central Nanling region in South China experienced multistage granite intrusive events and corresponding metallogenic processes during the Early Yanshanian period (190–140 Ma). In this study, a wide variety of published data on age determination, petrological characteristics, major and trace elements compositions, whole rock Sr–Nd contents and zircon Hf isotopic composition of the representative granite composites were systematically collected to estimate their cooling-uplift rates, granite evolution processes and mineral deposit formation. These granites have been classified into two groups based on their age and geochemical variations: Group 1 (180–165 Ma) and Group 2 (165–150 Ma). Major and trace element geochemistry suggests that Group 2 experienced more intense magmatic evolution and differentiation than Group 1. In addition, Group 1 granitoids are classified as A1-type alkaline rocks with faster cooling and uplift rates, whereas Group 2 granites are considered as A2-type aluminous rocks with slower cooling and ascent rates. Furthermore, the Group 1 granitoids have younger Nd and Hf two-stage model ages but higher eNd(t) and eHf(t) values, indicating influence from crust–mantle interaction. In contrast, the Group 2 granites show different values, suggesting stronger upper crustal contamination or assimilation. The slowly cooled and ascended Group 2 granites experienced much heavier crustal contamination (or assimilation) and crystal fractionation, contributing to the large W–Sn mineralisation in the central Nanling region. "Inter-aquifer leakage due to fractures caused by coal seam gas extractions or longwall mining is an important issue for both the gas and coal industries. Currently, predicting stress induced macro-porosity associated with hydraulic fracturing, depressurisation via dewatering or collapse of overlying seams to infill a void left by longwall mining, is problematic. If fractures can be located the fracture can be sealed. Locating fractures is difficult. The non-geophysical approaches to locate fractures has been to consider the mixing of different waters, particularly that of more recent shallower groundwater with older deeper groundwater, via differences in radio-isotopes integrated with geochemical models to predict likely mixing of waters. This approach is applicable under appropriately complex settings; however, it is an expensive technique and is based on the assumption that the daughter isotopes are equally non-reactive which may not always be the case.Potentially a cheaper and faster technique is to consider integrating geochemistry (mineral weathering) and hydrogeology. The chemistry of groundwater, controlled by the weathering of primary rock?minerals and?formation of secondary minerals, can not only be differentiated between geological strata but also within strata as different stages in weathering results in differing impacts on water quality (ie different reactants).Field analysis of pH, electrolytic conductivity (EC), oxidation reduction potential (ORP) and dissolved carbon dioxide together with laboratory analysis of dissolved constituents characterise the chemistry of the water. Collection of rock samples at the time of drilling for bore installation can provide the (only) opportunity to assess the media in which the groundwater resides and migrates through. An assessment of aquifer matrix chemical makeup, via bulk sample chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and petrographic analysis can achieve this.The chemistry of groundwater is dependent on the water velocity. Water at deposition and post-diagenesis dissolution of minerals by hydrolysis and oxidation will result in equilibria of the dissolved phase with the solid phase. Post-depositional fractures caused by either tectonic activity or weathering alter the rate of weathering and thereby the geochemistry. Slow water flow in microfractures results in water in equilibrium with the rock minerals. Faster flow in larger fractures results in water being in disequilibria with rock minerals.Fractures can alter groundwater chemistry by two pathways: changing groundwater velocity, which changes the rate of hydrolysis or oxidation mixing water from different geological strata.Both pathways cause subtle changes in the water chemistry.It is however, the dissolved phase chemical data, which can be observed over time at individual locations and/or at a point in time along a flow path, which allows the hydrogeologist to ælook up-gradientÆ and locate the zone of leakage. Hence, influences on rock/groundwater chemistry, from anthropogenic sources to natural mixing of waters, can be assessed via appropriate interpretation of geochemistry, hydrogeochemistry and flow data.This paper will use the example of the geochemical and hydrogeological characterisation of aquifers within the Hawkesbury and Bulgo Sandstone of the Southern Coalfields to the south of Sydney in New South Wales to demonstrate this approach.CITATION:Stuckey, M and Mulvey, P, 2013. BHP Billiton Olympic Dam required a well-tested software product suitable for strategic optimisation and scheduling of options for a potential underground mining project. The company has a standard software package called Blasor® that is used for open pit optimisation of complex deposits such as iron ore, copper-gold-uranium and silver-lead-zinc. It applies a mixed integer programming formulation (MIP) to produce conceptual pushback designs and an optimised pushback sequence. Schedules can then be run on the resulting mine designs. Existing pushback designs can also be imported into the model and an optimum schedule generated. One of the key advantages of Blasor is that multiple strategic mine schedules can be quickly generated according to the various scenarios, options and constraints that are being investigated.It was realised that Blasor, if carefully configured, could be adapted for use in underground planning. The concept of using Blasor as an optimiser for underground strategic scenarios is to represent the underground stope and development data in the form and structure of an open pit mine. In simple terms, underground stoping areas are modelled in the form of pushbacks (phases) with vertical walls. The phase dependency tools in Blasor are used to link mine blocks and their access development drives. These underground phases are imported into the optimiser. Artificial block models are constructed using stope design tonnage and grade data at various fixed cut-offs. A variable cut-off grade model has also been developed using a method of parcels to represent each cut-off grade increment.So far, this approach has been successfully used to investigate the optimum stope design cut-off for various strategic options, the economic potential of a series of mining and processing configurations and to provide guidance on the optimum sequence for developing and mining the various stoping blocks in the resource. Mines, after becoming operational, often retain the same support and reinforcement designs developed in the feasibility study. These designs are conceived from limited drilling data and regional experience, thus having an empirical flavour. Empirical designs are perceived to be conservative, catering for a variety of failure mechanisms, which are not always present in mine development drives.This begs the question: If you were to invest in the necessary resources to obtain sufficient data and complete the required analyses for the different development drives in the mine, to engineer a support and reinforcement scheme with the capacity to match the demand of the rock mass, what is the difference in cost when comparing an empirical design to an engineered design?To answer this question, mine tunnels with different geometries and orientations, where detailed structural data was available, were selected for a comparative design exercise. Material cost, development cost, cycle time and professional fees for engineered and empirical designs were estimated. The outcome is summarised in the following paper that discusses the process followed and the results of the design comparison.

PT. Indo Muro Kencana (PT.IMK) is gold and silver mine located in Central Kalimantan province, Indonesia. Mining activities in PT.IMK is conducted in Bantian pit area by applying surface mining method and using combination of excavator and hauler (articulated dump truck and rigid haul truck) as the transportation for ore to the crushing plant and waste material to the waste dump. Current blasting practice is ore-waste blasting. Ore-waste blasting is the term where the ore and waste rock are blasted in the same blasting process. Blasting is conducted by using nonel initiation system. By multiple pits operation, monthly powder factor is varied from 0.23 kg/t to 0.27 kg/t. Emulsion blend with density 1.15 g/cc is used as bulk explosive. At this stage, the concept of geoblast is proposed as an engineering tool for Drill and Blast engineering practice in PT.IMK. In addition, there is a need to maintain rock fragmentation by blasting, to maintain monthly powder factor, and to maintain excavator’s productivity. Next, the concept of scaled depth of burial (Chiappetta and Treleven, 1997) and the concept of blastability index (Lilly, 1986) are proposed as geoblast’s tools to improve blasting practice in PT.IMK. It is expected that rock fragmentation by blasting, explosive consumption and excavator’s productivity will be maintained by integration of geoblast and drill and blast engineering. Furthermore, the objective of this paper is to integrate geoblast and drill and blast engineering in order to create an engineering guideline in PT.IMK. Additionally, blasting trials with air decking application is proposed in order to support the geoblast’s improvement. It is planned that these blasting trials will be conducted in 2022. In conclusion, it can be seen that integration of geoblast and D&B engineering in PT.IMK is relevant to improve current drill and blast current practice and applicable to maintain rock fragmentation by blasting.

Extensive use of diesel-powered mobile equipment in modern mines for materials handling, such as load-haul-dump machines, constitute a significant source of heat, exhaust gases and diesel particulate matter. Provision of sufficient quantities of fresh, cool air are required to remove such atmospheric contaminants from the environment for miners, particularly at depths where ventilation constraints and associated operating costs have an increasingly adverse impact. An alternative solution to diesel equipment to combat economic, environmental, social and health challenges, are battery electric vehicles (BEV), with the potential to expand production and substantially reduce ventilation and cooling demand, subsequently reducing operating costs. In this context, this paper focuses on the introduction of a battery electric loader to a diesel fleet at one of the deepest underground mines in Australia, the CSA Mine, a high-grade copper operation in Cobar, New South Wales. Analysis of a trial battery electric loader compared to existing diesel machines is performed with regards to infrastructure, technical and operational issues. Key benefits of battery electric vehicles over conventional diesel-powered vehicles are discussed, including lower energy consumption and greater efficiency, reduction of emissions and heat, reduced need for ventilation and lower operating costs. Challenges of introducing BEVs into an operation, along with the results from the comparative study are addressed under impacts to energy consumption, equipment selection, effects on ventilation and cooling, mine design and economic viability for future fleet implementation scenarios whilst meeting production targets.

An essential component to the management of any process is the measurement of key parameters, used to monitor, control, and provide the feedback necessary for improvement. This paper discusses how data collection and analysis can provide a better understanding of the blasting process, as well as additional control and improved outcomes.The drill and blast process involves the generation and use of information at a number of levels. Comparison of historical parameters and results provides a starting point for the development of ongoing blast designs and a baseline against which future results can be compared. The collection of data during implementation provides a quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) function where potential defects (such as under-drilled or over-charged holes) can be rectified prior to firing. Actual quantities and production rates allow the development of realistic plans and schedules, rather than using inaccurate estimates and targets that lead to unscheduled changes to equipment paths. Over?the past several years there have been a number of technological advances in data collection technology. Drill monitoring instrumentation on blasthole drills provides location information and feedback on rock properties as drilling occurs. Hand held ‘data logger’ technology has also overcome the challenges of working on the bench, such that blasthole measurements can be collected and forwarded directly to the explosive truck. Mine sites are becoming wireless network-enabled allowing the seamless data transfer from the field back to the office, in near real time, as that information is collected. Great strides have also been made in the development of drill and blast software systems which are more user friendly, and yet provide far greater capability to manage the quantity of data generated. The blasting process is critical to the overall mining process and the delivery of a successful blast outcome requires that the blasting process be ‘in control’. The measurement of key parameters can provide the data with which to measure and maintain control of blasting, and allows the validation of performance improvement measures and identification of improvement opportunities.

The Granites Gold Mine Callie gold deposit is located 550 km northwest of Alice Springs in the Tanami Desert. Gold mineralisation occurs due to a complex interplay of geological factors which include but are not limited to favourable lithology, structure, alteration and quartz veining. High-grade mineralisation, while pervasive under favourable conditions, is highly variable over short distances and is very nuggetty. In contrast, the lithology and geological structures that host the mineralisation are very continuous. Orebody modelling techniques have evolved over time because of a growing understanding of the mineralisation controls. Modelling issues such as sampling and assaying accuracy, modelling method, data density, gold population statistics, geological interpretation and domaining, grade boundary and calculation conditions, and model block size are constantly being reassessed in an effort to increase understanding of the mineralisation controls and modelling accuracy. The evolution of the modelling process in response to increasing data levels and a growing understanding of the mineralisation controls has resulted in changes to the perception of the orebody size and style. This has caused the choice of underground mining method to be revised several times and the process to final mining method selection to take longer than usual. In order to achieve the planned production start-up date of July 1998 the process has been allowed to progress in parallel with development of the underground mine. This paper describes the resource modelling and mining method selection process applied to the Callie underground mine and some of the issues which have contributed to its evolution. Some conclusions that are relevant to the efficient planning and development of new mining projects in general are presented.

Most preventive environmental management practices promote proactive integrated approaches to waste management. For example, life cycle assessment is often used to find the ‘hot spots’ of environmental burdens. This kind of approach is often based on generic data and has rarely been used for tailings. Besides, life cycle assessments are less useful for designing operations or simulating changes in the process and consequent environmental outcomes. It is evident that an integrated approach for tailings research linked to better processing options is needed.The aim of this Nextmine™ project is to develop new tailings management models by streamlining orebody characterisation, process optimisation and rehabilitation. We present an integrated tailings management approach and preliminary results from a case study. Combined grinding and flotation models were developed using geometallurgical data from the orebody, to predict the properties of tailings produced under various processing conditions. The modelling scenarios based on the case study data provide the capacity to predict the composition of tailings and the resulting environmental management implications. For example, the type and content of clay minerals in tailings will affect the geotechnical stability and water recovery. Axial flow fans are commonly used as auxiliary fans in underground mines to supply air to development headings. As diesel dilution requirements increase the fans used in conjunction with ventilation bags are becoming larger in diameter to move greater quantities of air over greater development distances. It is not uncommon for mining operations to sometimes use a number of these larger auxiliary fans with high airflow capacity in parallel as primary fans for the operations. These primary fan stations are often considered temporary installations and the fan selection and fan station design is rarely optimised. These temporary installations may become permanent resulting in an inefficient or unreliable primary ventilation system. A recent study looked at the likely causes of multiple primary fan failures at one operation with axial fans installed as primary units where the fan selection and fan station aerodynamic design was far from optimal. This paper explores some of the typical mechanisms of failure such as high pressure stall, unbalanced airflow, and fan tip speed as well as fabrication material. The paper proposes a number of good practise principles that should be considered during the design of a fan station. A second topic covered is the advantages and disadvantages of using different types of fans such as axial, mixed flow and centrifugal units. A sulfide ion selective electrode was used to control sulfidiser addition in the flotation testing of a synthetic and a naturally occurring ore containing malachite in order to compare the behaviour of sodium sulfide and calcium polysulfide. Both slug and controlled potential sulfidisation methods of addition were used. Under defined optimum CPS conditions, calcium polysulfide was a more effective sulfidising agent than sodium sulfide on the basis of both capital and operating costs. Surface and solution studies were used to compare the mechanism of each sulfidiser. For calcium polysulfide, XPS showed that polysulfide ions are adsorbed, whereas for sodium sulfide it is the hydrosulfide ions that are adsorbed on the mineral surface. For calcium polysulfide, the CuSx layer was believed to form on the malachite surface, which promoted the flotation of the malachite, by xanthate. Studies of surface morphology of the sulfidised malachite showed that a fairly uniform sulfidised layer is formed with both reagents. The use of sodium sulfide resulted in a thinner initial sulfidised layer compared to polysulfide at equivalent initial sulfur concentration.

The Phu Kham deposit represents a copper-gold porphyry system, with mineralisation present in skarn, stockwork and disseminated styles. Significant folding and alteration events have created a complex heterogeneous mineralogy horizon. Weathering and water table contact have created a leached zone, overlying transition zones with supergene chalcocite- dominant secondary copper mineralisation and clay-rich gangue. Primary ore copper mineralisation is mainly chalcopyrite with minor bornite. The major challenges to the copper-gold flotation process are a wide size distribution of chalcopyrite mineralisation and poor primary grind liberation, a high pyrite content in skarn ore requiring aggressive pyrite depression conditions, clay-rich gangue and non-sulfide copper mineralisation in weathered zones, and a significant association of gold with pyrite.The Phu Kham concentrator has been developed as a conventional semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball milling circuit followed by selective rougher flotation, regrinding and cleaner flotation to produce a copper concentrate containing payable gold and silver values. The concentrator flow sheet design offered a capital efficient compromise between high copper recovery bulk sulfide flotation with large cleaning capacity, and lower recovery copper selective rougher flotation to ensure concentrate specification of 24 per cent copper grade could be achieved. This paper will examine and discuss concentrator flow sheet development, including projects implemented since commissioning to improve copper recovery, and future projects designed to maintain and enhance copper in concentrate production with decreasing copper grade and increasing pyrite content of ore feed, and increasing hardness of primary ore.CITATION:Bennett, D, Crnkovic, I and Walker, P, 2012. The growth in production of beneficiated ilmenite products has been one of the most significant trends in the titanium feedstock industry over the past 30 years. In this period, the production of titanium slag and synthetic rutile has grown five-fold to the point where these products represented 56 per cent of total feedstock production in 2000. Additional production capacity is being proposed as the core component of new feedstock supply projects presently under consideration. A high proportion of these products is based on technologies for which the inherent quality of the is an essential factor. Location specific factors also play a large part in determining the cost of production. As the demand for such products grows, and the availability of favourably located sources of ilmenite of suitable quality declines, it can be expected that existing beneficiation technologies will become increasingly constrained. Existing beneficiation technologies, and those which have been developed, but are not yet commercially applied, are reviewed. Future issues which are likely to impact on the cost effectiveness of these technologies, or the quality of final products, are identified. These factors suggest directions for development of ilmenite beneficiation technologies to achieve economic production of the quality of feedstocks which will be demanded by the TiO2 pigment industry in the future.
