The Otago Schist is being subdivided on a regional scale into structurally, metamorphically and lithologically distinct blocks. Differences between blocks are subtle, and difficult to map in the field. Boundaries are late-metamorphic or immediately post-metamorphic in origin, and are different from later brittle faults which disrupt the schist. Mapping of late-post-metamorphic structural discontinuities has direct application for basic grassroots exploration in the Otago Schist. The mineralised (and currently mined) Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone forms a regional scale boundary between a block dominated by politic schist and a block with massive psammitic schist, pelitic schist, and minor greenschist and chert. The HMSZ forms a metamorphic discontinuity, with garnet and biotite in the underlying schist, and neither index minerals apparent in the overlying schist. The HMSZ is also a structural boundary between domains with differing lineation orientations. The HMSZ can not yet be traced along strike to the northwest to the Rock and Pillar Range, where the only major discontinuities recognised are the Caples-Torlesse boundary and a normal fault separating low grade from high grade schist. Structural and lithological discontinuities in the Dunstan Range break the range up into distinct structural blocks, two of which are separated by the gold-mineralised Rise and Shine Shear Zone.

Experimentally determined and theoretically explained phenomenon of zonal disintegration of rock around the development working brings about the radical changes in existing ideas about the mechanism of interaction rock massive with engineering constructions.The essence of the phenomenon consists in the fact, that forming of non-elastic deformations zone goes on by way of more intensive deformation and destruction of rock simultaneously in several zones, covering partially or fully output circuit and divided by zones of destructed rock. Under the influence of change of massive strained-deformational condition of depositional rock an accidental deviation of zones of supplementary expansion and compression of rock from the previous positions take place. One can observe multiplicational change of the outline, size and form of all disintegration zones in the time within the area of the working influence at massive. This phenomenon was named "fluctuation of zonal disintegration of sedimentary rock around development working".

Lead smelter slags, produced during the last century in quantities ofmillions of tonnes at Lavrion, Greece, have recently been used in theconstruction of Lavrion harbour. In order to evaluate the geochemicalstability of slags and assess their environmental impact on the aquatic environment, a detailed study on lead leachability under conditions that simulate subsea environments was carried out. Leaching experiments using magnesium chloride solutions under mild temperature conditions were conducted and the effect of main parameters on lead solubility was examined. Furthermore, kinetic analysis on the experimental results was performed. Based on the results, lead dissolution increases by increasing the reaction time, magnesium chloride concentration in the bulk solution and temperature, whereas it decreases by increasing the slags particle size. The reaction order was found to be approximately 0.5 at the initial extraction stages and the activation energy value from the Arrhenius plot was estimated to 29.8 KJ/mole. Diagnostic equations applied to all the experimental data reveal that lead dissolution is mainly controlled by diffusion through the ferrosilicate matrix of the slag particles, which is in accordance with the low activation energy value. The JanderÆs diffusion equation [1-(1-a)1/3]2=kt was proposed as the equation representing the reaction of lead dissolution from slags using magnesium chloride solutions.

As the theme of this conference is æRediscover OtagoÆ it would seem appropriate to revisit the era of the gold rushes and subsequent mining industry which rapidly advanced settlement and economic prosperity for Otago, and left permanent reminders in the form of historic mining sites, many of which are now encompassed within the Otago Goldfields Park. I have been invited to give a paper at this conference on the subject of æHistoric Goldfields of Central OtagoÆ. As well as having a working involvement with historic areas through my employment with the Department of Conservation, I have a personal interest in the early goldmining industry of Central Otago as my grandfather came out from Scotland in the 1890s to help construct gold dredges on the Molyneux. My grandfather made headlines in the local paper in 1920 when he believed he saw a New Zealand otter at Island Block near Beaumont - but that's another conservation trail that I will not pursue any further today! For this paper I intend to divide my time to cover the following topics. Firstly, I would like to sketch a mental picture of the characteristics that make up the Central Otago landscape, and the general perception that early miners must have had when viewing this foreign land. Then I would like to briefly discuss the changes and the consequences in the early gold rush to Central. Finally, I would like+ to discuss the establishment of the Otago Goldfields Park, which I will illustrate with several slides.

Under the Town and Country Planning Act 1977 the Ministry of Works and Development has a responsibility for providing information to local and regional planning authorities on public works and matters of national development and importance, for the exercise of their responsibilities under this Act. One such matter which has recently become a source of concern is the development of South Island lignite. In 1979 the Ministry of' Energy produced a position statement outlining a programme of' research leading to the possible extraction of lignite in Southland or Central Otago for conversion into about 50 per cent of New Zealand's liquid fuel requirements by 1995. Understandably this possibility has caused considerable concern at the local level, expressed particularly by bodies such as Federated Farmers and the local authorities. In the absence of any factual knowledge short of mere conjecture been able to recommend to local authorities is that they limit their planning period to ten years. After this time more information regarding the size, nature, location and certainty of the proposal will permit a more accurate assessment of the implications of the York. While on holiday earlier this year I took the opportunity to visit opencast mining areas in Germany and England to gain an appreciation of the scale of impacts involved and discuss with those concerned the procedures used in planning for such operations. What follows is a brief description of these operations, a comparison with the likely development in this country and the extraction of what may be some relevant principles of' operation for the planning of an environmentally acceptable project. Since its inception in 1990, improved metallurgical processing technologies, coupled with mine planning enhancements and improved geological knowledge, have sequentially enabled better efficiencies and economies of scale at the Macraes Gold Project. Over a period of 11 years, processing enhancements have been achieved by: +        increasing mill throughput, from one million tonnes per year, to current throughput of 3.9 million tonnes per year; +        improving recovery rates, from 70 % to approx 84 %; and +        performance enhancement through innovation, eg the use of kerosene to combat ClL pregrobbing. Future processing improvements have been identified in optimising the ore feed and processing flowsheet. The introduction of the autoclave has transformed the process flow form a traditional 'mill headgrade and tonnes milled' operation, to a 'sulphur/gold ratio and sulphur tonnes oxidised' operation.

Siliceous float sampled in the Wafi River by CRA Exploration in 1977 assayed 22 g/t Au and 89 g/t Ag. Follow up in 1979 led to the discovery of outcropping mineralisation now known as Zone A. Soil sampling in 1980 and 1982 outlined a 350 m by 400 m area of >1 g/t Au at Zone A and smaller areas at Zones B, C and D. Thirty-one diamond holes were drilled between 1983 and 1986. Elders Resources continued evaluation of Zone A under a farming agreement between 1988 and 1990. Mineralised diorite porphyry was discovered in 1990 by drilling conceptual targets 500 m to the NE of Zone A. Evaluation of this copper-gold porphyry became the main focus of exploration for the next five years and a substantial resource was outlined within a single, discrete body. A review of the paths to project development in late-1995 highlighted the need for increased resources via a second mineralised porphyry and/or an additional resource of Zone A size to make the project viable. It was concluded that the greatest immediate potential for increasing the resource inventory was at Zone A itself where the mineralisation was open in all directions. Detailed mapping and drill core logging lead to the geologic and structural models being revised in early-1996. The objectives of the 1996 drill program were to extend the Zone A resource, to test for continuity of mineralisation westwards to Zone B, to better define the controls on gold mineralisation and to delineate high-grade blocks amenable to selective mining by infill drilling and 3D orebody modelling. The last drill hole of 1996 intersected 30 m at 4.6 g/t Au from 273 m in WR147, deep in the western limit of Zone A. This intersection gave impetus to continue drill testing towards Zone B. In April 1997, hole WR154 was drilled 100 m to the west of WR147 and intersected 20 m at 8.5 g/t Au and 70 m at 11.0 g/t Au at similar depths near the diatreme contact. Drill hole WR155 was then drilled 100 m to the west of WR154 and intersected 86m at 5.7 g/t Au and WR159 drilled 100 m to the south of WR154 intersected 36 m at 9.2 and 50 m at 4.4 g/t Au. A significant zone of essentially blind, high-grade gold was discovered beneath the dipping flank of a poorly mineralised diatreme in what became known as the Link Zone. The long history of evaluation has been driven by the conviction of a dedicated team that a mineralised system of the size and complexity of Wafi with strongly anomalous gold in outcrops over the entire Mount Golpu area must contain economic mineralisation hidden within it. The keys which redefined the direction of exploration and lead to the discovery of the blind, high-grade gold Link Zone were, in our view, the critical review of the project status, detailed geological and structural studies to define clear exploration targets and the necessary funding and persistence to carry this through.

To cope with varying raw material qualities and increasing prices for energy, a more frequent and accurate monitoring of the processing of iron ore became the focus in sinter plant operations. Traditionally, quality control in iron producing industries has relied on time-consuming wet chemistry or the analysis of the elemental composition. The mineralogy of a sinter that defines the properties and behaviour in the blast furnace is often not frequently monitored. One fast method to analyse the mineralogical composition of iron sinter, raw mixtures and iron ores is X-ray diffraction (XRD). Recently statistical methods such as similarity analysis or partial least square regression (PLSR) in combination with XRD raw data has become more and more popular in handling large amounts of data and correlating process-relevant parameters directly with an XRD measurement. PLSR can be used to correlate process parameters directly from the XRD pattern without investigating the mineral content. Hidden information that is present in the measurement but not determined with traditional methods can be used to improve the characterisation of the analysed materials.CITATION:König, U and Norberg, N, 2017. The Golden Cross mine is situated in a sensitive environmental setting on the North Island of New Zealand, about 150 kilometres south-east of Auckland and about 8 kilometres NW of Waihi. The mine is situated in dipping topography, with volcanic ashes making up soils, fault zones running through the area, and rainfall of about 3 m per year on average. Water management is the most demanding environmental challenge on site, and a comprehensive programme has been put in place to address tailings deposition, long term tailings storage, and water treatment during and after operations.   The tailings impoundment is built with an underdrainage system that collects groundwaters and waters that seep through the impoundment. The embankment and impoundment are both built to withstand the Maximum Credible Earthquake and the Probable Maximum Flood. Tailings are treated to remove cyanide and to decrease metal solubility to reduce long term risk to water quality after mining. A state-of-the-art water treatment plant is utilised to treat water from the underdrainage system and water decanted from the top of the tailings pond and stormwaters to remove residual cyanide and metals to extremely high standards with a great deal of reliability and at reasonable cost. Closure of the facility addresses long term post mining water quality issues, and rehabilitation of the area with wildlife habitat as a priority.

Previous legislation did not cover all work places, many areas were excluded from coverage, and there were at least 14 different acts and dozens of sets of regulations dealing with various aspects of health and safety.

The Nokomai valley is located within the pumpellyite/actinolite facies of the Otago Schist, a regional scale metamorphic belt in Southern New Zealand. The Otago Schist is dominated by psammitic and pelitic greyschist with more subordinate greenschist, quartzite, marble, and ultramafics. Mining in the Nokomai, began in the 1860s, with sluicing of terrace gravels in the lower valley. Good gold is reported to have been won from unconformities within very weathered gravels lower in the terrace sequences, and particularly from within channels which dissect these older deposits. Gold was recovered from these terraces in the main Nokomai Valley, and two major tributaries (Victoria Gully and Bullock Head Creek). In the period 1885 - 1887 further gold was discovered in basal gravels beneath the Nokomai flats when the Hunter brothers sank two shafts and excavated a connecting drive to discover a lead 1.2 - 1.5 m thick. The Golden Lion Sluicing Company began mining in 1896 using an hydraulic elevator on the very 'tight' 1.8 - 2.4 m of basal gravels. This operation was followed by the Nokomai Gold Sluicing Company whose average return grade was >485 mglm3 until mining ceased in 1943 (Wopereis; 1988, 1989). A quartz vein, Commissioners Reef, was worked for small production at some time during the 1920 - 1930 period, until fault termination of the vein ceased production.

A 3-D computerised model of the southern part of Greymouth Coal Limited's Coal Mining Licence area has recently been completed. This model, and associated 3-D CAD tools, has/is being used to optimise drillhole spacing during exploratory data collection and as a visualisation and interpretation aid. This model will also provide the basis for future mine planning, with the emphasis on an optimal mine outline to maximise safety and profitable coal extraction. Previous use of computer techniques was restricted to drillhole database entry, storage and log production. Recently a 3-D geological/structural model was created for the Southern Rapahoe Sector of the Greymouth Coalfield. Geostatistical analysis of the database highlights the inadequacy of the present drillhole spacing for preliminary mine planning. The sparsity of hard data at depth results in a lower level of confidence in the accuracy of the 3-D model. Nevertheless, the model and 3-D CAD techniques has been used to target and refine ongoing resource evaluation, and provides the basis for initial reserves. In the future the geologic model will be used as the basis for preliminary and later (optimal) mine planning. It is also expected to accommodate other forms of data input in seam drilling and seismic. Development of the 3-D computer model was a first in the Greymouth Coalfield and highlights both the use of computerised techniques for resource evaluation and mining, and the effects of wide spaced drillhole data on model accuracy. The computer will continue to provide the most efficient and cost effective tool for optimal resource evaluation and mine planning as Greymouth Coal Limited moves from feasibility/mine planning to full production. The increased use of computer-based methods for mine planning should be seen as part of 'The Changing Face of West Coast Mining' in line with the theme of this Conference.

The Greymouth Coalfield contains New Zealand's greatest known resource of bituminous rank coal. The coals are of very high quality, with low ash and sulphur contents and a range of other properties that makes them desirable for a wide range of uses. In fact only a few producers around the world today can offer coals with such exceptional properties. This suggests that Greymouth coal has potential as a premium export trading commodity. These assertions have been largely confirmed by a comprehensive exploration drilling programme funded by Mines Division û Ministry of Energy between 1979 and 1984. The program, forming part of the NZ Coal Resources Survey, was carried out under contract by Lime and Marble Ltd. The drilling of 49 deep, predominantly cored, holes at 1000 m intervals over the coalfield has generated a vast amount of data. It has shown the existence of three major potentially minable coal deposits containing 233 x 106, 33 x 106 and 15 x 106 tonnes of coal in ground. Investigations have at this stage only identified targets and these estimates represent 'in ground' resources, not recoverable reserves. Recent geological studies as well as past and present mining have clearly highlighted the problems posed by the complexity of the coalfield geology. The coalfield lies within a mobile zone in the earth's crust known as the Paporoa Tectonic Zone, which has been active from at least mid-Cretaceous to the present time. Currently this factor poses the greatest obstacle to the determination of mining possibility of the, defined deposit and ultimately will strongly influence any future mining development. The Greymouth Coalfield has, however, had a long and eventful mining history spanning the last 120 years, where 32.5 x 106 tonnes of coal has been won from over 100 mines. In spite of the problems facing development, the large quantities and exceptional quality of the remaining coal will act as a strong inducement to persevere with this difficult but potentially valuable resource.

Industrial Minerals production in New Zealand is limited in both quantity and range, but imported in quantities that make New Zealand the world's biggest consumer per head of population. The use of industrial minerals is assured as both population and standard of living increase regularly. But to develop these minerals in the New Zealand environment requires the mineral, or its market (both local and export), to have characteristics that negate the remote geographical location. Volume and/or uniqueness can achieve this.

Test Work on High Throughput Diamond Tracer Recovery from Alluvial Recovery Tailings with a Containerised Optical Sorter Under Real Production Conditions Worldwide alluvial diamond deposits are traditionally processed with dense media separation and XRF sorters, hand picking or grease tables. The test work conducted verifies the performance of an optical sorter detecting the transparency of particles for diamond recovery from the DMS concentrate, eg XRF-sorter and handpicking tailings. The containerised setup enables economically feasible, high throughput, semi-mobile setups to retreat recovery tailings from alluvial and also primary deposits. The test work has been conducted with quartz and glass particles, which are less transparent or comparably transparent, under realistic production conditions on a 600 mm belt machine with an installed electrical power of only 21 kW. The results show that 99 per cent recovery can be reached at a throughput of 10 t/h in the -8 + 2 mm fraction and at 22 t/h in the -25 + 8 mm fraction. At a throughput of 18 t/h a recovery of 88 per cent has been assessed. At a further escalation of the throughput, dust in the sorter container made sorting impossible in the coarse fraction and the recovery decreased significantly in the fine fraction. Analysis of the belt coverage indicates that higher throughputs of the coarse fraction can be fed onto the optical sorter if the dust extraction system is improved. The results are basis for the decision to conservatively feed 20 t/h of the coarse fraction and 17 t/h of the fine fraction in day to day production. The settings have been applied to sort alluvial recovery tailings in South Africa and will be applied to sort the recovery tailings of a primary deposit in Lesotho. The test work has shown that an optical sorter can be used to retreat recovery tailings with high throughputs. The compact setup of a screen and a 9 m standard container enables semi-mobile, temporary setups for small recovery tailings dumps and remote areas. In addition, sorting on transparency ensures the recovery of high value low-fluorescent diamonds.

Detailed characteristics of gold from Pliocene auriferous quartz gravels from Waimumu (Southland) have been studied using a combination of optical microscopy, energy dispersive microprobe analysis and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The gold at Waimumu is classified as either: 1. detrital gold, or 2. irregular gold. A number of different morphologies a recognisable within each 'gold type'. Evidence is given for an predominently authigenic origin for some of the gold at Waimumu.

Formation of gold-bearing veins in Otago Schist was intimately linked to the structural evolution of the schist belt. The currently-exploited Macraes gold deposit formed in a regional scale shear zone during latemetamorphic uplift of the schist belt. Further exploration for this type of deposit will be facilitated by an increased understanding of the late-metamorphic structural evolution of the schist belt. To this end, a three-dimensional cross section through the Otago Schist has been drawn using structural data gathered at outcrops in a 20 - 40 km wide transect across central Otago. This is the first continuous detailed structural section to be drawn through the belt. The section spans an area from Textural Zone 1 metagreywacke of the Torlesse terrane in the northeast through TZ 4 schist in the central region and across the Caples-Torlesse boundary to Textural Zone 3 schist of the Caples terrane in the southwest. Two different late-metamorphic structural generations are identified in this section: the long-recognised Manorburn Generation, and a new æPoolburn GenerationÆ. The location of the Caples-Torlesse boundary has been refined on this transect by field mapping combined with whole rock geochemistry.

The Taharoa ironsand deposit covers approximately 16 km2 and is located 144 km south of Auckland on the west coast of the North Island, New Zealand. The heavy mineral-rich sands predominantly contain titanomagnetite, ilmenite and hematite, along with lesser amounts of amphiboles, pyroxenes, and feldspars. Throughout the Taharoa mine site 142 samples were collected of which approximately 25 samples were used in mineralogical analyses of the magnetic, heavy non-magnetic and light non-magnetic fractions. Mineralogical and petrographic analyses confirmed the high abundance of homogeneous magnetite and magnetite containing ilmenite exsolution lamellae which have oxidised to hematite. A limited number of sand samples were collected from Taranaki beaches. Petrography reveals exsolution textures of magnetite and ilmenite (now hematite), and homogenous magnetite grains similar to those observed at Taharoa. Petrographic analyses from previous research projects were also closely investigated in order to make mineralogical comparisons from along the west coast of the North Island and with other potential source areas. The origin of detrital magnetite grains along the west coast of the North Island is generally presumed to be the eroded volcanic cones of the Egmont volcanoes and active and dormant volcanoes of the central North Island. Electron microprobe analyses of magnetite grains from Taranaki beach samples reveal TiO2 values of between 1.5 and 120 per cent. MgO and A12O3 contents also vary widely from 0.75 to 6.5 per cent. This large variability may reflect different volcanic eruptions, the presence of exsolution textures or alternative source areas for these magnetite grains. Geochemical results from the Taharoa mine site correlate with the Taranaki beach samples suggesting that the Egmont volcanoes are certainly one source area. Variability in XRF results, especially Fe and Ti contents (9.04 - 59.22 and 0.80 - 4.64 respectively), from the magnetic and heavy non-magnetic fractions likely reflect the detrital nature of this deposit.
