O conversor AOD-L é de uso exclusivo para a produção de aços inoxidáveis na Aperam South America. Entre janeiro a julho de 2018, o consumo de FeSi estava acima do orçado, acarretando em perda de gestão para a Aciaria. O aço inoxidável AISI 304 representa 50% da produção da Aciaria na rota duplex (sem uso do VOD), portanto, esse projeto teve como objetivo a redução do consumo da liga de FeSi no AOD-L para o aço AISI 304. Essa redução foi possível através da utilização da metodologia Lean Six Sigma na qual a causa raiz foi identificada e as ações implementadas o que permitiu uma maior estabilidade operacional, além de aumentar a competitividade da Aperam South America frente aos demais produtores mundiais.

Apesar da relevância e interesse do tema de gerenciamento de alarmes na comunidade técnica industrial, observa-se que poucas empresas têm, de fato, implantado e conseguido extrair melhores resultados na eficiência e segurança operacional de suas plantas. O presente trabalho visa, a partir das experiências dos autores em implantação e acompanhamento de vários sistemas de gerenciamento de alarmes na indústria, discutir os principais motivos pelos quais estes sistemas falham em conseguir índices melhores em operação, monitoramento e gestão de alarmes. Além disso, propõe-se neste trabalho que estratégias, práticas e ferramentas sejam adotadas para que se consiga o máximo de benefício operacional ao se implantar e manter tais sistemas.

This article deals with a project to reduce the preparation time and threading the coils in the input section of a pickling line coupled to the cold strip mill (PLTCM) at ArcelorMittal Vega. The project developed serves for the detection and elimination of bottlenecks in the input section. The project was conceived by the philosophy of the Theory of Constraints (TOC) and Lean Six Sigma (6 sigma), here seen as sequencing serial / parallel in the preparation and threading the coils. In this context, a proposal to modify the automatic sequencing and reduction of interruptions due to failure of the automation / equipment confirmed its effectiveness reducing the total time preparation time and threading the coils in the entry section by 15%. This project was developed without investment costs, bringing gains on the order of US$613,769.00.

The customer asked for a 5” angle roll pass design. For this angle, in a normal pass design, a 160mm billet is required. For the production of this billet would be necessary a new 160mm mold for the Continuous Casting Machine, which produces 150mm billets, increasing the complexity of the melt shop. The rolling mill is designed to produce angles up to 4", technical information recommended the replacement of a gearbox because this process would generate torque up to 15% above nominal. An innovative roll pass design was done using 150mm billet using the Aparecido-W Method that cause a higher spread in the first three passes, thus reaching the desired leg length. As this method is not used in any other known rolling mill, a FES (Finite Element Simulation) and FEM (Finite Element Modeling) was done by a Research & Development center which demonstrated that the design was viable. From July, 2018, three tests were done being produced around 700 t of good quality products without difficulty of set up. The rolling mill team carried out this project at a very low cost and in record time of five months. The average torque of the motors was 36%, without overload for the equipment.

Este estudo trata da metodologia de projeto de tratamento térmico para pinos J. O pino J funciona como fusível mecânico do obturador de produção de petróleo e deve romper numa determinada faixa de carga de cisalhamento, a fim de que não haja excesso de tração no obturador. Foram feitas análise química, análise da intensidade de tensões devida à forma do pino, ensaios de dureza e ensaios de cisalhamento. O estudo foi eficiente para determinar o adequado tratamento térmico a fim de garantir a tensão de cisalhamento estipulada no projeto do pino.

Gerdau Ouro Branco´s plate mill started the operation in 2016 with high level technology. Stands out the capacity to produce different thicknesses in a same plate, therefore allowing special service for sectors such as building structures, bridges, shipbuilding and mechanical applications. The purpose of this study is to present the first results obtained in this innovative product in Brazil. Some slabs of EN10025-2 S355JR+AR steel were rolled and were evaluated the dimensional tolerances, mechanical properties uniformity, grain size, surface and internal qualities. In addition, a correlation was observed between slab and plate thickness reduction and internal plate quality. The results show that this technology can be used with adequate performance for these steel grades in the current market.

Fiber reinforced polymeric composites have received widespread attention in the past four decades because of their high specific strength and modulus. In particular, research works have disclosed the potential advantages associated with the use of lignocellulosic fibers as the reinforcing phase in polymer composites (2-3). Among various natural fibers, pineapple leaf fibers exhibit excellent mechanical properties. The main chemical constituents of pineapple fibers are cellulose (70–82%), lignin (5- 12%) and ash (1.1%). The superior mechanical properties of pineapple leaf fibers are associated with their high cellulose content (6). This work aims to make the analysis of the Izod impact energy against volume fraction of palf fibers of epoxy composites reinforced with PALF. The fibers were incorporated into the epoxy matrix with volume fraction from 0 to 30%. After fracture the specimens were macro photograph analyzed.

For many years, Dynamic Soft Reduction has been regarded as a proper method in improving internal quality of slabs. Even though processes models improved significantly over the past years, the efficiency of Soft Reduction was always limited by the discretization error, which inherently exists if segment rollers cannot be positioned individually. The recently developed SRD segment type allows for an individual roller positioning within the mushy zone by avoiding any discretization deviation from the optimal gap. This paper provides a detailed technological overview of the SRD segments as well as operational results at their very first implementation at Ternium Brazil.

During the last years Riva Acciaio Verona has taken the decision to invest in the route of a fully automated meltshop. The aim is to reduce at the minimum the operator's intervention from the bucket preparation till the ladle transfer to the continuous casting bay. The foundation for achieving the goal is the introduction of innovative technological solutions (fully automated cranes for bucket charge in the EAF, robots for sampling, etc. The paper underlines how the different solutions are based on the best practices to improve operator's safety and describes the different steps of the project, the different solutions adopted and the results in terms of production, energy savings, cost reduction and improved safety. Details are presented for: scrap yard management and bucket preparation, EAFs centralized controls and related robots for auxiliary operations (sampling, EBT cleaning, scraper for slag door automation, complete mass & energy balance based on process control), LFs centralized controls and process integration.

Conventional wire rod blocks have some limitations. They can only roll with fixed reduction ratios which always require the same rolling diameters within the block. With MEERdrive® SMS, as a pioneer, has introduced an innovative drive concept for wire rod blocks that can overcome the limitations of conventional solutions. The clue: the concept is based on individual drives for each stand position. The exigent wire rod market demand and the available technology melt in a new variant of MEERdrive®, the MEERdrive®PLUS, which represents a sizing block solution for finished size rolling and allows conventional as well as thermomechanical rolling. Further “one family rolling” is also possible, since all roll / size changes will occur in this block.

Acerbrag es una empresa Argentina siderúrgica de 50 años de trayectoria, desde el año 2007 pertenece al grupo Votorantim de origen Brasilero. Se dedica a la elaboración de aceros largos para la construcción. La planta industrial cuenta con un proceso de acería integrado, horno eléctrico, horno cuchara y máquina de colada continua. La materia prima es 100% chatarra, característica que la diferencia del resto de las acerías del país. Debido a esto el enfoque principal de este proyecto es reducir el costo de fabricación mediante un “empobrecimiento” de la carga metálica a partir de la flexibilización de los límites de especificación. Esto implica un mayor control del desempeño de los procesos a fin de detectar posibles desvíos, para ello fue necesario implementar la utilización de herramientas estadísticas y gráficas para su monitoreo. La modificación en el mix de fabricación no muestra una alteración significativa en la composición química y propiedades mecánicas de los productos terminados, situación favorable para la continuidad del proyecto. Se observa además, de la reducción de costo esperada, una ventaja en la operación del patio de chatarra y el proceso de acería y en la utilización de chatarras con altos niveles de residuales tales como Cr – Ni.

Lubricant oils are subjected to reciprocating movement in the piston ring/cylinder tribocouple of automotive engines. In this kind of movement, the relative speed oscillates between zero and a maximum, and therefore the lubrication regime goes from boundary to hydrodynamic. Tribotests are widely used in laboratories to hint at the friction developed in these systems. In the present work, a SRV tribometer was used to evaluate the friction behaviour of lubricant oils under reciprocating movement up to 60 Hz. A high acquisition rate allowed the analysis of data inside each reciprocating cycle. Both a pure base oil and a fully formulated lubricant were used. Changes in the contact pressure, viscosity and speed were seen to influence friction, which was correlated to the relative thickness predicted by Hamrock-Dowson equation. While some observed characteristics were typical consequences of the Stribeck curve, other effects were also observed, such as the occurrence of seizure at high reciprocating frequency. A lower boundary coefficient of friction due to additive package in the formulated oil was also observed. The results allow a better understanding of friction in reciprocating cycles and can be used to evaluate the performance of oils and surfaces in laboratory prior to engine testing.

Electrode regulation is the technology at the heart of the AC and DC Electric Arc Furnace. As such, in the last decade it underwent continuous improvement to maximize the EAF performances, in terms of process efficiency, machine utilization and operator safety. Given this background, Danieli Automation’s efforts in the field of electrode regulation have been focused on fast response to scrap cave-in, compensation of supply variations, automatic resonance detection, transformer protection, dynamic regulation of the electrical and chemical set-points, coordination and control of slagging and foaming agents, arc irradiance supervision. An extensive analysis of operator utilization and feedback was also carried out to develop an innovative system HMI. In this field, the choice of the variables shown to the user is the key aspect to allow a prompt process evaluation by the operator, who can refer to a condensed set of useful data. This paper will describe the innovative features and embedded models of the electrode regulation module (Q-REG+) and the supervision HMI, together with the effects of their application on EAF process efficiency and system usability.

The purpose of Sinter plants is to heat iron ore fines along with fluxes and coke fines or coal, to produce a semi-molten mass that solidifies into porous pieces of sinter with the needed size and strength. Fluxes used in the sintering process need to have an appropriate size distribution and TI to avoid generation of fines, which could reduce the productivity of the Sinter. Besides, a homogeneous chemical composition and high absorption characteristics are necessary to control the basicity and to combine the flux with P, S, Si, etc, respectively. PASEK Dunite is an ultramaphic rock exploited in the north of Spain with a basic chemical classification, being olivine and serpentine its principal minerals. It is a very homogeneous and hard stone and its main characteristics are: high hot and cold resistance to mechanical stresses, softening and melting points of a flux not of a refractory material. In addition, due to its mechanical and chemical properties, less fines are generated in the sintering process and during the handling and transportation to the blast furnace, improving the productivity of these processes. In this way, the use of PASEK Dunite allows increasing the homogeneity structure of sinter, reducing the percentage of return fines and improving the Sinter productivity.

Recently, the demand for ultra-thin steel plate with high hardness and strength has been increasing in various industries. In order to satisfy this requirement, steel company designs the chemistry with low CEQ and obtains the required characteristics through quenching and tempering process. Especially, these steels are accompanied by low temperature tempering as a necessary process. Unlike ordinary high temperature tempering steels, it is impossible to improve the flatness after low temperature tempering. Therefore, shape control in the quenching process is very important for securing the excellent quality flatness. In order to obtain flatness in the quenching process, uniform cooling inside the plate should be accompanied. However, the quenching process has limitations in estimating the temperature behavior during cooling because the plate temperature is lowered to room temperature. In this study, a thermocouple was installed inside the actual quenching plate to measure the temperature behavior during cooling and to establish the manufacturing conditions of the quenching plate to ensure excellent flatness quality.

This paper presents a unique stirred milling technology, Outotec HIGmill™, a modern, flexible and energy efficient grinding solution for fine and ultra fine grinding being tested in an industrial scale level. The test was performed at an iron ore pellet producing plant in Sweden (for confidentiality reasons, it will be referred to only as “the client”) where a pilot HIGmill™ unit (HIG25) was installed parallel to a conventional regrind circuit to compare its performance to the existing ball mill. By using a continuous test run procedure and evaluating the parameters of F80, P80, mill shaft rotation speed and power drawn it was determined its grinding capabilities, operational flexibility and energy efficiency. Outotec HIGmill™ outperformed the existing ball mill in the plant proving its capabilities to grinding finer, with steeper particle size distribution (PSD) and much higher energy efficiency. The tests performed showed that, with further refining of its operation, it is capable of consistently deliver the required PSD with up to 30% higher grinding efficiency.

In this study, in order to achieve ultra-high strength without reducing plasticity, a novel heat treatment involving a pre-quenching process prior to conventional intercritical annealing (P-IDP) was proposed in a low carbon low alloy DP steel. It revealed that abundant fraction of banded structure was observed after conventional intercritical heat treatment (IDP) due to the inheritance of cold rolling deformation. However, the banded structure in novel heat treatment was eliminated significantly, whilst the refined microstructure was relatively more homogeneous with ultrafine ferrite grains. Moreover, obvious chain-networked martensite grains along the ferrite grain boundaries were obtained. The optimum mechanical properties with ultimate strength of 1238 MPa, total elongation of 17%, product of strength and elongation (PSE) of 21GPa% were obtained by P-IDP treatment, which was much higher than the values reported with similar composition. As to pre-quenching treatment, all of grain refinement, homogeneous distribution of martensite islands and precipitated strengthening of microalloyed carbides were beneficial to improve the final strength and ductility.

No presente estudo foi feita a análise de falha de eixo de uma bomba de alimentação de ureia fundida de uma fábrica de fertilizantes. Foram realizadas inspeção visual, fractografia, metalografia. A falha foi associada à concentração de tensões no raio da chaveta e ranhuras de usinagem, o que causou a fadiga.

In the mining industry, it is common to have data collected in various formats. In an open pit mining operation, at the early stages of exploration samples are obtained from diamond drillholes. During the production stage, samples are collected from blastholes. The last is more numerous but less precise. From a geostatistical view, this dissimilarity has to be considered to integrate the two sources of information. To combine this different data, three methodologies were investigated: simple kriging with local varying mean, cokriging and ordinary kriging. The exhaustive Walker Lake data set was used and it is considered the source to obtain the true grades. Initially, samples were obtained from the exhaustive data set at a regular spacing grid of 20 x 20 meters. Next, samples were obtained again from the exhaustive dataset at a regular spacing of 5 x 5 meters and a relative error of 25% was added. Then, both data were used to estimate blocks using the three methods mentioned. The grade tonnage curves were compared with the true block grade distribution. Moreover, the block misclassification was evaluated. The results showed that ordinary kriging produced estimates closer to the true block grade distribution and reduced the block misclassification.

Inter Stand Cooling (ISC) can increase productivity of a HSM and improve final mechanical properties of the strip. Constant Target Exit Temperature can be ensured for the whole strip length eliminating skid marks and other temperature oscillations of the transfer bar. The paper deals with advanced control module of ISC. Essential mathematical models of the control system is introduced and basic functionality is explained. Temperature model is based on FEM. Mechanical and thermal properties of the strip are calculated from chemical composition using neural network. Further on an experimental possibilities for investigation and design of ISC cooling headers will be shown. In conclusion practical experience with ISC on various HSM will be discussed.
