In places where Blast Furnaces are usually located, climatic factors may be unfavorable. Raw materials may be exposed to e.g. rain during transport/storage, bringing moisture into the process with consequences for stability and hot metal cost. This paper describes a technology for drying and pre-heating pellets and coke in the stockhouse. It does not require additional handling or logistical equipment and does not introduce extra transfer steps and degradation. Not only can moisture content be reduced, it can be controlled to a stable level by the operator.

Friction-reducing textures for lubricated mechanisms have received much attention since the advent of microtexturing techniques. In this work we consider the piston ring/liner contact, numerically simulating the rings as they slide against a textured liner. This situation has not been sufficiently analyzed because its numerical complexity is much greater than that of texturing the rings. Further, we consider the actual typical geometries of oil-control, wiper and compression rings, under realistic loads and velocities. The results show the possibility of friction reduction when the texture on the liner is properly designed, identifying starvation alleviation as a crucial intervening mechanism.

Surface quality monitoring is primarily implemented in the last steps of steel manufacturing before shipment to the end user. However, an increasing trend for also addressing this topic in the upstream stages, such as hot rolling plant, is tackled by Primetals Technologies to give steel producers the key to a global optimized yield management, and efficient “lessons learned” processes. After the last developments of SIAS Next Gen platform, including High Resolution and Near Infra-Red, some site results will be exposed on the very specific high constraints lines such as ESP Endless Strip Production and Plate Mills, and highlights the related most interesting aspects for our customers.

Roll grade evolution in plate mill applications is traditionally following the development in hot strip mills. New grades normally find their way into service only after being successfully implemented in hot strip production. The majority of the plate mills worldwide are using work roll grades that have been invented before the 1980’s. But today the demands in the mills are pushed by sophisticated product mixes and longer rolling campaigns. The result of this development is a higher wear rate on the work rolls and as a consequence roll hardness is increased and advanced roll materials are used. The backup rolls are also affected by this. The wear rate is higher and the mechanical impact in terms of contact pressure and work hardening is increasing. This paper outlines the results of the roll grade development at Gontermann-Peipers and introduces new materials for work and backup rolls for plate mills.

The Intelligent Furnace (I-Furnace) by SMS group is a smart furnace process and production optimization model. The combination of various tools leads to an optimized heat treatment and production process. It combines a mathematical/physical model to control the furnace with EMG’s IMPOC system for online strength measurement and a newly developed annealing microstructure model to predict material properties. This paper reports about the revamping of an existing galvanizing line, where a mathematical/physical control model has been implemented in combination with an online quality measurement system. This way, the process improvement of continuous galvanizing lines and the quality management of a range of steels including AHSS will be demonstrated. Furthermore, it gives information about the development of the annealing microstructure model to predict material characteristics. Eventually, the I-Furnace will be presented according to the current development and reference status.

Graphitic HSS roll grades such as ESW’s brand VANIMO can be considered as the latest developments for the last finishing stands in hot strip mills. These roll grades are developed on the basis of the alloying concept of (Carbide Enhanced) Indefinite Chill work roll materials. During the development of VANIMO, the amounts and types of carbide forming elements were increased and adjusted into the direction of cast HSS roll grades. The microstructure of graphitic HSS roll grades therefore consists of tempered martensite, cementite and several different carbide types as well as a well-defined amount of free graphite. The main purpose of graphitic HSS roll grades is to combine the high surface quality of Indefinite Chill alloys as well as the high wear resistance of HSS roll grades. Several systematic steps were taken to increase the wear performance from Carbide-Enhanced Indefinite Chill grades to the more advanced VANIC grade and further on to the highest alloyed roll grade VANIMO. In every development step, the surface quality of the roll grades was carefully monitored. The decision to invest in new testing equipment at ESW’s plant was driven by the wish to see microstructural effects of different alloys in a macroscopic dimension. Usually samples are taken from cast rolls and investigation is done in comparably small areas compared to the total surface of a roll. Rolling of strip is done with the entire barrel, so effects of alloy and microstructure can appear anywhere on the barrel surface. To ensure better understanding and deeper knowledge about influences of alloying trials we decided to install the last version of LRI (Lismar Roll Inspection). LRI includes the latest technology of Eddy Current with an enormous resolution. Depending on the formation of carbide precipitations, carbide network as well as matrix and free graphite, the EC test can detect smallest differences. The possibility to analyze the different results of EC and UT surface wave inspection will be discussed. A few examples of surface effects in the mill application will be discussed and improvement strategies explained.

UltimaTM rolls have been designed for intermediate and finishing stands of rod and bar and small and medium section mills. The rolls and rings are spun cast, with a highly alloyed working layer and a tough nodular iron core. Microstructure and hardness level can be adjusted over a wide range, which allows us to adapt the rolls to differing rolling conditions. After introducing the UltimaTM concept, this paper will describe the results of UltimaTM rolls achieved in various mill applications, like finish rolling of rebar, and slitting. Special emphasis is given to performance gains when using UltimaTM rolls, compared to standard rolls. This paper also examines the impact of UltimaTM rolls on mill and roll shop productivity.

O processo de obtenção de coque em uma coqueria convencional Non-Recovery consiste no aquecimento de uma mistura de carvões, provocando sua desvolatilização, gerando o coque que é principal combustível utilizado em altos-fornos. O aquecimento da mistura de carvões se dá de forma indireta. As paredes dos fornos recebem calor da câmara de combustão alimentada por uma mistura de gases de alto-forno, coqueria e aciaria ou, exclusivamente pelo gás de coqueria. O gás de coqueria COG (coke oven gas) é composto basicamente de hidrocarbonetos e recebe tratamento para retirada de impurezas, alcatrão, sulfato de amônia e óleos leves. Os elementos residuais no gás, mesmo após o processo de tratamento são extremamente prejudiciais às tubulações de distribuição, formando compostos corrosivos, podendo ocasionar o colapso de tubulações, gerando acidentes, gastos com reparos e perda de produção. Neste contexto, o presente trabalho tem por objetivo apresentar os fatores que levaram a necessidade de substituição das tubulações principais de distribuição de gás no subsolo da Coqueria 3 da Usiminas Ipatinga, conferindo segurança ao processo e estabilidade operacional.

Impinging water jets promote high heat flux extraction rate. Steel industry widely employs the process for accurate temperature control to improve the microstructure and to ensure adequate mechanical properties. The range of surface temperatures, heat fluxes and cooling rates are very large, which makes it important to obtain an accurate value of the heat transfer coefficient. This paper presents an experimental and numerical study of the heat transfer behavior of a high temperature (450°C - 900°C) steel plate cooled by a water jet at 20°C to 70°C. High-speed imaging (up to 20,000 fps) within water jet impingement zone allowed the characterization of the boiling regimes in the early stages of cooling. The effects of initial temperature, water jet temperature and velocity on the heat transfer coefficient were analyzed by inverse heat conduction method that predicts the heat flux and temperature on the top surface from temperatures measured with thermocouples inserted in test plate. Heat transfer is strongly affected by the initial temperature of the hot steel, water jet temperature and, less intensely, by jet velocity. High cooling rates start when liquid water is in direct contact with surface temperatures above 700°C.The results will contribute to the enhancement of the temperature cooling control on the runout table and cooling model employed at Usiminas Hot Strip Mill.

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo mostrar os benefícios do Stove Oxygen Enrichment (SOE), ou seja, o enriquecimento do ar de combustão (comburente) dos fornos regeneradores de altos fornos, visando atingir economias de combustível. O enriquecimento do comburente permite que combustíveis de menor poder calorífico sejam utilizados em substituição de combustíveis de maior poder calorífico, tornando-se disponíveis para aplicações mais nobres dentro da siderúrgica, como a laminação e a geração de energia elétrica. Outro aspecto importante é a redução da queima de combustíveis que antes eram descartados no flare, reduzindo as emissões de carbono para a atmosfera.

Stability of the hot strip mill rolling process remains a main topic when it comes to processing thin and hard materials. Strip steering especially at the end of rolling and tail out rips are a main source of unscheduled down times in a hot strip mill. Main focus of this paper is the new X-Roll® Guide system to improve mill stability and quality. An overview of SMS group developments in the recent years regarding equipment and control strategies is given. The new side guiding system in the entry area of the finishing mill is introduced and explained with operational examples. The system provides reproducible conditions for the threading process and during rolling. Steering control has a direct benefit on the availability of the mill. New developments of the roll alignment control strategies based on roll force and mill stand entry guide force measurement will be presented. Additionally a camera based measuring system is introduced that generates a direct process feedback of the strip position. It provides together with the roll alignment control the necessary control parameters for adjusting the roll gap and guiding the strip correct centered through the mill. As a summary the SMS group system is explained combining all features.

As propriedades e caracteristicas do diboreto de titânio (TiB2) e nitreto de alumínio (AlN) tornam esses materiais ideais para aplicações termomecânicas. Entretanto, a dificuldade de sinterizar compósitos cerâmicos à base de TiB2 – AlN tem limitado suas aplicações na indústria contemporânea. Nesse sentido, o presente trabalho tem por objetivo avaliar a técnica de sinterização por plasma pulsado (SPS), como uma alternativa para consolidação de compósito cerâmico em um curto intervalo de tempo. Após a caracterização das matérias primas, as amostras foram sinterizadas utilizando temperaturas entre 1.500°C e 1.900°C, além de 80 MPa de pressão e 10 minutos de permanência na temperatura máxima. A técnica “SPS” mostrou-se eficiente na sinterização desse sistema, alcançando densificações de até 98%. E ainda, como era esperado, a incompatibilidade dos coeficientes de expansão térmica entre o TiB2 e o AlN provocaram um processo de tenacificação nos compósitos.

Na operação do alto-forno é comum observar flutuações em seu comportamento, seguindo o ciclo de vazamento de gusa e escória. O acumulo de liquido no cadinho e sua influência no aumento da força hidrostática são as principais causas dessa flutuação.O cadinho é uma parte crucial na operação do alto-forno por muitas razões. No entanto, por ser o local de acumulo de gusa e escória, este deve ter volume suficiente e facilitar uma drenagem sem distúrbios. Por isto, o estado do redutor/combustível, chamado “homem morto” desempenha uma importante função. Este trabalho apresenta uma breve revisão sobre os principais indicadores do estado interno do homem morto no cadinho do alto-forno.

Neste trabalho foi avaliado um método alternativo de redução dos óxidos de cobre, a técnica de redução assistida por plasma de hidrogênio em reator de plasma pulsado de corrente continua (cc). O plasma de hidrogênio apresenta como possibilidade a produção de espécies de alto poder redutor, derivadas da molécula de H2 [1], além de produzir majoritariamente, como produto da reação, o vapor de água que não é prejudicial ao meio ambiente [2]. A pesquisa se limita ao estudo da influência da pressão do processo de redução a plasma sobre a redução de pós de óxido de cobre (I) (Cu2O). Os experimentos de redução foram realizados em um reator a plasma pulsado DC, sob fluxos de hidrogênio de 300cm3/min, temperatura de 300°C, tempo de 60 minutos e pressões variáveis de 267, 534, 800 e 1068 Pa. Determinou-se a eficiência da redução através de um balanço de massa e foram feitas as seguintes análises nos produtos da redução: difração de raios-X, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e EDS. Os maiores valores de frações de redução foram obtidos a 800Pa, o que pode estar associado à formação de uma bainha catódica que envolve por completo e de maneira uniforme a superfície das camadas de pó.

Rogesa is operating two medium sized Blast Furnaces, No. 4 and No. 5 at Dillinger integrated steel works plant. The history of the results of the cooling concepts of the intersection between tuyère belt and bosh shows failures at both furnaces. At the 3rd reline of No. 5 Blast Furnace in 2010 changes were made to improve the cooling efficiency of the mentioned area. Two rows of copper cooling plates were installed. After commissioning and a short operating time hot spots occurred in the area of the cooling plates. The decision was taken to develop a new cooling concept together with Paul Wurth Umwelttechnik GmbH, Essen-Germany by replacing the cooling plates by one row of a short copper stave. The duration of the shutdown to perform the work was only 17 days including salamander casting. The operational results after the commissioning are very satisfying with outstanding performance of the new bosh cooling system.

A partir do advento computacional, foram possíveis novas formas de análises comportamentais de fenômenos físicos via simulação computacional. Este trabalho visa utilizar de técnicas de visão computacional e processamento de imagens digital, aliado ao método do cone causal para simular evolução microestrutural em aços. A partir de uma micrografia, um domínio real em 2d foi obtido computacionalmente por visão computacional. Os contornos da microestrutura foram detectados por processamento de imagem digital. Nestes contornos foram simulados nucleação e crescimento de novos núcleos, pelo método do cone causal. Ao fim do trabalho foram apresentados, dados da evolução microestrutural do sistema estudado na forma de fração volumétrica versus tempo, área superficial por unidade de volume versus tempo e uma microestrutura discreta simulada. Apresenta-se neste trabalho uma nova ferramenta computacional para estudar reações de nucleação e crescimento em 2d a partir de microestruturas reais.

The next generation of the well-established 3-roll Reducing & Sizing Block (RSB), the RSB SCS® is the latest milestone in reducing and sizing technology for SBQ products. It offers enhanced bar quality, improved productivity, mill availability and economy as well as a simplified, safe and environmentally friendly operation. A newly developed modular drive concept of the RSB SCS® grants a smaller footprint in the layout, a reduced oil-lubrication volume and a simplified maintenance schedule. Intelligent engineering leads furthermore to reduced hydraulic functions of the RSB SCS®, which ensures a safe and environmentally friendly rolling. Another integral part of the RSB SCS® is an innovative stand changing concept, which allows automatic stand changing within three minutes. The new RSB SCS® also includes a Fast Remote Control (FRC) which enables the immediate adjustment of the roll gap against the rolling force (under load) within milliseconds. Size changes along the free-size range can also be made within the traditional billet gaps in less than five seconds. At the core of the future-oriented RSB SCS® is a real-time closed-loop control system called Size Control System (SCS®) acting with 3-roll stands adjustable under load (AUL) and / or the heavy duty stands. These features remarkably further improve the rolled tolerances and their reproducibility, and at the same time simplify the operation by means of an automated optimization of the process parameters for the rolled bars.

The effect of low-temperature plasma carburizing treatment on the micro-abrasive wear resistance of AISI 420 steel was investigated by mean of a CSM Calowear ball-cratering equipment. Carburized samples were treated at temperatures of 350, 400, 450 and 500°C for a fixed time of 12 h, using a gas mixture containing 99.5% (80% H2+20% Ar)+0.5% CH4. Micro-scale abrasive wear tests were conducted with a 25.4 mm AISI 420 steel sphere, using an abrasive suspension of alumina (Al2O3) with particle size of 1 ?m (abrasive concentration of 0.11 g/cm³). The contact normal force, abrasive flow and ball rotation speed were fixed at: 0.5 N, 0,2 drop/s, and 120 rpm. The wear craters were analyzed using a confocal laser microscope, Olympus OLS 3000. The wear analyses were performed for test times of: 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, 360, 540, 720 and 900 s (equivalent sliding distance: 0.84, 1.68, 2.52, 3.36, 5.04, 10.09, 15.14, 20.19 and 25.23 m, respectively). The results indicate that the wear coefficient in the outer layer and in the diffusion layer are different, being lower in the latter. It was also verified that the wear coefficient on the outer layer region decreases with increasing treatment temperature in the range of 350 to 450 °C, and increase again for 500ºC. The diffusion layer wear coefficient is similar for all the carburized samples. Finally, for all studied conditions, the analysis of the wear craters surface indicates the occurrence of grooving and micro-rolling abrasion wear modes.

Neste estudo uma liga AA6061 foi processada por Extrusão Angular em Canal (EAC) com até quatro passes, a partir de duas condições iniciais diferentes, solubilizada e estabilizada, sendo imposta uma deformação verdadeira de 1,05 a cada passe. As amostras processadas foram caracterizadas através de ensaios de dureza e de análises de calorimetria diferencial de varredura. Tratamentos anisotérmicos foram aplicados após a EAC em condições escolhidas através de calorimetria diferencial de varredura. Observou-se que, devido à microestrutura gerada pela deformação imposta, uma parcela significativa do endurecimento total é obtida após o primeiro passe. As análises de calorimetria diferencial de varredura mostraram que nas amostras deformadas a sequência de precipitação é modificada em relação àquela observada na ausência de deformação, sendo suprimida a formação da fase b¢¢. Ao final dos tratamentos anisotérmicos, observou-se que o valor de dureza das amostras era menor do que o valor inicial, devido à recuperação e à precipitação da fase b¢, menos endurecedora.
