Exxon is reclaiming an 80-hm2 (200¬acre) Wyoming uranium tailings basin in accordance with US Nuclear Regula¬tory Commission (NRC) requirements. The reclamation plan is designed to control the tailings and their radioactive emissions for at least 1000 years. Rigorous modeling and analyses of potential erosion by wind and water were used in planning. The use of riprap was minimized and the need for long¬term reclamation maintenance was eliminated. The resulting design is simi¬lar to regions stable from erosion cre¬ated by nature. The concepts used in the design and implementation have wider reclamation application. Highland history Exxon operated the Highland uranium operations from 1972 until mid-1984. Open pit and underground operations mined the roll front, sandstone ore body. The 2.5 kt/d (3000 stpd) mill employed conventional crushing, grinding, sulfu¬ric acid leach, CCD, SX, precipitation, and drying circuits. The mill produced 10 Mt (11 million st) of tailings. An¬other operator began commercial scale in situ leach operations in 1988. The tailings basin was constructed by deposition of mill tailings in a natural ravine dammed with a 30-m (100-ft) high by 1050-m (3400-ft) long clay core earthen dam built entirely downstream of tailings. Figure 1 shows the layout of the tail¬ings basin in 1984. Tailings were de¬posited along the dam face on the east side of the basin as well as in the west end and along the south edge until the early 1980s. This left a deep water pond in the middle of the basin. The deep pond was largely filled with tailings during the last four years of mill opera¬tions by the construction of two tailings causeways and the operation of a float¬ing tailings line. The pond water volume was mini¬mized by recycling tailings water to the mill and by operating a 32-L/s (500¬gpm) evaporation enhancement spray system during the last few years of mill operations. Regulatory requirements Several conceptual tailings basin rec¬lamation plans were prepared during the mine life. In September 1984, Exxon began preparation of a detailed plan in response to an NRC request. Water, Waste and Land Inc. (WWL) of Fort Collins, CO was selected to help pre¬pare the plan that was submitted to the NRC in December 1984. The design had to meet the require¬ments found in NRC regulations (NRC, 1985). These were based on regulations prepared by the Environmental Protec¬tion Agency (EPA, 1983) at the man¬date of federal law (UMTRA, 1978). The NRC regulations contain strict primary standards and a somewhat more flexible set of secondary standards. The primary standards include requiring that: • radiation from tailings be reduced to background levels; • radon gas emitted by the tailings be reduced to 20 pCi/m2/s from the surface of the reclaimed tailings pile; • tailings not be dispersed into the environment; and • these conditions endure without routine maintenance for at least 200 years and for 1000 years to the extent reasonably attainable. The lengthy time requirements pre¬sented a large engineering challenge. Radon is a radioactive, chemically inert gas with a 3.8 day half-life. It is released from uranium tailings by the radioactive decay of radium, which, in turn, is a radioactive decay product of uranium. Radon emissions from ura¬nium tailings can be controlled with an earthen cover thick enough that the radon gas decays to its solid, short-lived radio¬active daughters before the radon dif¬fuses through the cover material into the air.

Introduction Typical dragline rigging includes several sets of ropes: hoist ropes, drag ropes, dump ropes and boom suspension ropes. The drag and hoist ropes contribute most to the dragline operating cost. Both work in very difficult conditions and wear out rapidly. As a result, frequent rope changes are required resulting in substantial cost and productive time loss. Although performance of rigging has a profound impact on dragline efficiency, there are no common, industry accepted standards related to its selection, operation and maintenance. Little information on the subject is available and the practice differs widely throughout the industry. The performance of drag and hoist ropes depends on: •rope construction that should closely match requirements of the specific application, rope operating conditions and its maintenance and • correct definition and application of the rope discard criteria so that full advantage of the rope can be taken without endangering safety of its operation. This paper reviews the present practice related to all these factors. Its findings are based on the wide survey of the present industrial practice. Field survey In total, 33 North American dragline applications were surveyed of which 17 were Bucyrus-Erie machines, 10 were Marion and six were Page (now P&H). Most of the draglines were stripping overburden in coal mines, but the survey also included some unique applications such as phosphate mining in Florida and oil sand mining in Alberta. Hoist drive power of the surveyed machines varied from 300 to 7775 kW (400 to 10,400 hp). Drag drives varied from 300 to 5815 kW (400 to 7800 hp). Boom lengths varied from 37 to 110 m (120 to 360 ft). Bucket sizes varied from 5 to 96 m3 (6 to 115 cu yd). The hoist and drag ropes installed on the surveyed machines were supplied by 10 rope manufacturers and differed widely in type and construction. Most common rope strand constructions included standard strands, Seale, Warrington, Warrington-Seale and Filler-Seale. Results of the survey [ ] Working conditions Working conditions of hoist and drag ropes are quite different. The first cope primarily with bending on rope drums, point sheaves and deflection sheaves, and with tension force imposed by the bucket and its load. The drag ropes are exposed to severe abrasion at the pit crest, and to severe bending and crushing at fairleads, all while coping with tension forces imposed by resistance of the bucket to dragging. Bending of drag ropes at house rollers and at rope drums is of minor importance for their performance. Differences in working conditions result in different wear patterns, which make it feasible to install discarded hoist ropes to further serve as drag ropes. The hoist ropes wear primarily due to fatigue breaks of wires, while the drag ropes are subject to severe abrasion of outside wires, rope deformation and internal wire-strand breaking. The last is often indicated by the reduction of rope diameter. The summary of working conditions for the surveyed draglines is shown in Table 1. For simplicity, Table 1 does not include the data on rope bending at the fairleads, nor at the deflection rollers and house rollers. Similarly, Table 1 does not include the data on drag rope bending (other than that on the rope drum), as its influence on rope life is insignificant in view of severe abrasion and internal wear taking place elsewhere. However, the safety factors of the dragline ropes are lower, which requires them to carry relatively large tension forces. The reliable quality assessment of grouting operations is one of the key issues in establishing impermeable grout curtains around shafts, drifts and tunnels. Reliable opera¬tional information on the decrease in the permeability of rock during the grouting process facilitates the assessment of the effectiveness of the completed curtain and assures production quality. Quality control and assurance also fa¬cilitates the early detection and elimination of possible de¬fects in the grout curtain. Thorough control of the grouting process provides the capability to evaluate decreases in the permeability of water-producing fracture zones prior to the beginning or the continuation of excavation of the shaft, tunnel or drift. In order to achieve this objective, post¬grouting hydrodynamic investigations are conducted prior to the initiation or re-initiation of work on the underground workings to measure the decrease in the permeability coef¬ficient of aquifers during grouting operations. 8.1 QUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL OF THE ISOLATION OF ROCK BY GROUTING THROUGH HOLES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACE Quality assurance and control are based on measuring the decrease in the permeability coefficient of water-pro¬ducing horizons as a result of injecting grout into the drill¬holes. For this purpose, the value of the acceptable residual permeability coefficient is calculated beforehand based on the acceptable value of ground water inflow into the shaft, drift or tunnel as specified by the "construction norm and integrated practice (SNIP)" (Anon., 1976). Having ob¬tained the values of aquifer thickness, permeability, and head distribution for each aquifer from flowmetric data (dis¬cussed in Chapter 3), the average value of the permeability coefficient of all aquifers intersected by the shaft is calcu¬lated as [ ] where Ki is the permeability coefficient of the "ith" aqui¬fer; Pi is the pressure of the "ith" aquifer; and M; is the thickness of the "ith" aquifer. The total expected inflow of ground water into the shaft is [ ] where RK is the radius of the contour of influence; RCFB is the radius of the shaft; and p is the coefficient of dynamic viscosity of the ground water. The necessary reduction of the coefficient of permeabil¬ity of the aquifer [ ] where Q is the expected inflow of ground water into the shaft from eq. 8.2; Q.-fin is the acceptable inflow of ground water; and a is the safety factor. By knowing the average permeability value of the rock and the permeability reduction coefficient, it is possible to determine the value of the acceptable residual permeability coefficient for all the aquifers [ ] The values of the permeability coefficient, pressure, and thickness for each aquifer are determined from the data gathered during the hydrodynamic investigations conducted in grout holes prior to beginning the grouting operations as discussed in Chapter 3. After injecting the grout into the first of the holes, the injection into each of the following grout holes is preceded by repeated hydrodynamic investi¬gations. Using the data obtained for each water-producing zone, a graph is constructed where the numbers representing the grout holes in their order of grouting are placed on the abscissa, and the values of the aquifer permeability coeffi¬cient are placed on the ordinate (Fig. 103). This curve char¬acterizes the change in permeability of the given hydro¬stratigraphic unit as grouting operations are completed, one hole at a time. The results of grouting operations are considered to be positive when each sequential observation records a steady decrease in the permeability of the aquifer. The permeabil¬ity measured prior to the injection of the grout into the last hole must be lower than or equal to the acceptable perme¬ability as determined by the application of eqs. 8.1 through 8.4. Table 8.1 presents illustrative data on the hydrogeo¬logic properties of aquifers at a mine shaft prior to the initiation of grouting operations. Data also are presented on the reduction in the permeability coefficient during the in¬jection of the grout. The shaft in question intersects eleven aquifers. Based on data concerning aquifer pressure, thick¬ness, permeability, and the expected inflow rate of water for each of the strata, the average permeability coefficient is calculated according to eq. 8.1 as K = 0.2 x 10-12 m2. The recovery of coarse particles has been widely recognized as being limited by the froth in mineral flotation. In response to this, FLSmidth has developed the Selective Froth Recovery (SFR) System. The SFR System is an extraction system that vacuums material from select locations within the froth and separates the recovered solids into coarse and fine fractions with a hydrocyclone. The SFR is supported and located by an actuator connected to the cell?s level control so that the suction heads are maintained at an offset distance from the slurry level. This can increase the recovery of coarse material by selectively recovering the material close to the bottom of the froth where drop-back of coarse particles typically takes place. The SFR System has been tested at two separate mine sites, and has been proven to increase the copper recovery in both trials. TEST RESULTS The SFR prototype was installed in a copper recovery circuit, on a rougher scavenger 160-m3 flotation cell. Figure 1, shows the SFR System, which consists of four conical skimmer heads that are plumbed together and share a common actuator. The SFR System, raised out of the froth prior to a test, can be seen in Figure 2. The SFR prototype was able to maintain a variety of set points using the level control to determine the slurry height.

Acceptable working environments in production areas and service openings of Mindola Mine on the Zambian Copperbelt are currently maintained with an air volume of 1000 cu m/s and 5500 kW of installed refrigeration plant. It is planned to open up additional deeper areas of the mine for future production. Temperature problems, due to the increased heat generation from various underground sources are recognized as potential hinderances to efficient production. Findings of research work indicate that the present total heat output of 58,000 kW will inevitably increase by the second five-year period of the deepening program to 52,900 kW and by the fifth five-year period to 63,200 k\V. Estimated WB and DB temperatures, representing the total heat generation in stope faces and development headings during these same periods are predicted to increase to 53.8/40.2 °C and 35.5/42.1 °C respectively. It is assessed that the nominal refrigeration capacity needs to be progressively increased to 9,000 k\V This paper deals with the thermal problems in Mindola Mine, current heat output calculations, future prediction of temperature and heat load in various working areas of the mine with the application of computer programs and interpretation of data in order to find the effective solution for long-term planning of ventilation and air-conditioning.

Dust surveys were conducted at six underground coal mines to determine if deep-cutting practices expose face workers to higher levels of respirable dust. The surveyed mines were able to successfully mine deep cuts without significantly increasing the dust exposures of face workers. In general, all of the selected mines exercised good dust control practices by maintaining water sprays, scrubber airflows, proper curtain setback distances and providing sufficient airflow to the active faces. For exhausting face ventilation, field data indicate that scrubber airflow is the most important factor for controlling dust. Data collected for this study indicate that 20-mesh screens should be cleaned for every 12.2 m (40 ft) of advance, because 22% of the deep cuts surveyed for this study experienced a 20% to 35% decrease in scrubber airflow over the course of the cut. For blowing face ventilation, field data and past research indicate that dust control is aided by maintaining a proper curtain-to-scrubber airflow ratio of 1.0 (measured before scrubber activation), as well as a curtain setback distance that allows the miner operator to stand at the mouth of the curtain for the entire cut. Dust levels on the bolting faces did not appear to be affected by the longer cycles associated with deep-cut mining when good ventilation practices were used.

This paper presents sulfur isotope data obtained for the deposits and country rocks of the Bailadores and Aroa Mining District, Venezuela. The study is a part of an extensive geochemical investigation of the mineralized belts that has as their aim the elucidation of the genesis of ores. The Bailadores deposits are located at about 600 Km. west-southwest of Caracas, or about 10 Km. southeast of the Town of Bailadores, Merida State (Fig. 1). The mine concession is held by the Ministry of Mines and Hydrocarbons (De Lima I, De Lima II and La Cascade areas). In a straight distance the mine is about 90 Km. southwest of Merida, the capital of Mérida State. From Mérida to Bailadores, through La Victoria and Tovar, it takes 3 hour by car. From Bailadores to the mine site it is about 40 minutes by jeep. The Aroa deposits are located at 4 Km. east of Aroa Village, Yaracuy State, about 220 Km. west of Caracas. It is 83 Km. from San Felipe, the capital of Yaracuy State to the mine (Fig.2). The mine is about 600 m above sea level, situated on the northern foot of the E-W trending Andes. The topography of the mine are shows a mature stage and is somewhat rugged. As the climate is warm and humid, the area is thicky covered with jungle.

The Environment Weipa is located at 12° south latitude on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland, Australia. The climate is tropical with most of the 1 600 mm. average annual rainfall falling between November and March. During the short winter months (May/ August) the weather is clear and pleasant, with temperatures seldom exceeding 27°C.Throughout the remainder of the year, conditions are frequently oppressive due to consistent high ambient temperatures accompanied by high humidity. The terrain is of low relief, and generally not more than 6 to 10m. above mean sea level adjacent to the coast. The coastline features numerous short estuaries which discharge run-off from the heavy rains collected by creeks and rivers. The whole area is covered by an open forest, the predominant species of which is Eucalyptus tetradonta. These eucalypts have only limited commercial value and are heavily infested with termites. Despite the fact that Weipa is close to the location of the first reported sighting of the Australian coastline by a European (William Janz - 1606), it remains very isolated. There is no developed road or rail connection to centres of population, so that transport of practically all products, personnel and materials to and from Weipa is by sea and air. Methane gas is an ever-present problem facing the underground coal mining industry. Mine operators are mandated by law to maintain safe concentrations of methane gas within the mine environment. Ventilation is used by all mine operators to reduce gas concentrations. When gas emissions are such that ventilation alone cannot control the gas, methane drainage methods must be applied. In the 1970's, there was a concern that unprecedented gas emissions would be experienced as mine operators began new developments in the deep and gassy Blue Creek and Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbeds. Such concern was well founded as significant gas volumes are being emitted as these mining operations mature. In 1971, the O.S. Bureau of Mines began to tabulate and track the change in mine emissions. These data were extracted from the underground coal mine quarterly air quality-quantity inspections performed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. At that time, approximately 6,560 Mm Id (231.7 MMcfd) of gas were emitted from 430 underground coal mines. It was determined however, that the mines emitting less than 2,832 m Id (100 Mcfd) contributed only 2.1 percent of the total daily gas flow. In 1988, underground coal mines emitted 8350 Mm Id (294.9 MMcfd) from 487 mines. This report evaluates the changing nature of U.S. mine gas emissions over the last 18 years.

The Great Belt Link is a $3.5 billion fixed link across an 18 km (12 mile) wide body of water that separates the island of Zealand, on which Copenhagen is situated, and the main land mass of Denmark, Jutland, which is part of the European continent. The project consists of three main contracts. The first contract is an 8 km (5 mile) long, two-bore railway tunnel for the eastern half, the second contract is a 6.6 km (4 mile) combination railroad and highway bridge for the western half, and the third contract is a 6.7 km (4 mile) long high-level highway bridge for the eastern half. This paper will discuss the Eastern Railway Tunnel Project and the methods of construction that the joint venture consortium plans to use, along with its equipment selection. The ground conditions to be encountered begin with glacial tills, which are a mixture of clay, silt, sand, gravel, cobbles, and granitic boulders. The boulders can be up to 1-3 m (3-10 ft) in diameter. Underlying the till is a marl which is sometimes highly fractured with hydrostatic pressures of up to 8 bar. About 40% of the tunnel is in till and 40% in marl, with the remaining 20% being a mixed face of the two formations.

This paper describes the practices and methods used in a study of Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) as an inexpensive deformation monitoring tool in underground excavations at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The WIPP is being developed near Carlsbad, New Mexico, for the disposal of transuranic nuclear wastes in bedded salt 655 m (2 150 ft) below the surface. Data collected from WIPP geomechanical monitoring are used to characterize conditions, confirm design assumptions, and understand and predict the performance of the deep salt excavation. The geomechanical monitoring program encompasses numerous geomechanical monitoring techniques ranging from inspection of observation boreholes to advanced radar surveys. In 1989 TDR was introduced as a monitoring tool with the installation of 12.7 mm (0.5 in) diameter TDR cables in the underground excavations. In 1993, a new TDR system was installed in a separate location. Based on experience with the previous installation, enhancements were implemented into the new TDR system that: 1.) extended the period of performance by increasing cable diameter to 22.2 mm (0.875 in), 2.) increased accuracy in locating areas of deformation by aligning cables with nearby observation boreholes, and 3.) improved data acquisition and analyses using a standard laptop computer, eliminating the chart recorder previously used. In summary, the results of a correlation between the TDR signatures to nearby observation boreholes and geomechanical instrumentation will be presented.

During developing the Ingulska mine at the Mi-churinske uranium deposit in the central part of Ukraine the radioactive rock dumps have been piled. A height of dumps reaches to 15-25m. They occupy a large territory and can be a source of covering with radioactive dust the area around the Ingulska mine. Uranium content exceeds 0,01% in all dump rocks samples while in the dust fraction samples it ranges from 0,01 to 0,06%. Uranium content in road dust at the dump?s foot reaches 0,137%. A new (for Ukraine) method of f-radiography of tree and bush leaves sampled at the territory about 100km2 has been used. It is based on fission of 235U nucleuses due to heat neutron influence in a nuclear reactor and on following study of the Lausan films with tracks drawn by the fractures of these nucleuses. Uranium content of the dif-fusion-disseminated dust type is (0.9-22.2)?10-6% while in the individual particles it can be considered much more because of burned holes in Lavsan above them. The dust content with uranium in Kirovograd reaches to 20-50 part/cm2 while near the dumps it ranges from 100 part/cm2 to 300 part/cm2 in the radius of 1,5-2km from the Ingulska mine.

Fire development and spread along conveyor belts in ventilated ducts were investigated experimentally and theoretically. Various types of conveyor belts used in mining applications were ignited and burned in a full-scale gallery under various flow conditions. The flame spread rates depended strongly on the ventilation air speed. The time-temperature traces of gas and belt obtained at 12 feet from the entrance show that a rapid belt surface temperature change takes place prior to a change in the gas temperature, indicating that radiative heat transfer from the flame to the belt surface plays an important role. Further, anomalies in the flame spread rate in the vicinity of 1.5 m/s air speed (i.e., much greater rate than that observed at either higher or lower speeds) can be explained through the mechanism of flame tilt and the resultant view factor between the flame surface and the belt surface. In order to correlate the fire spread with material properties of the conveyor belts (such as the specific heat, the thermal conductivity, and the pyrolysis temperature) and the fire environment (such as the gas temperature and the ventilation air speed), a theoretical model has been developed. This model is based on the experimental observation that the radiative heat transfer is the dominant mode of energy transfer ahead of the flame front. Agreement between the theory and the experimental results is good.

The Zabirah bauxite is a Cretaceous paleolaterite exposed by postTertiary uplift and erosion of the Phanerozoic sequence. The laterite profile, which is preserved in situ, occupies a prominent angular unconformity over a sequence of sandstones, siltstones and mudstones ranging from Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous in age, and is overlain by a Late Cretaceous terrigenous and carbonate package. The profile is known to be preserved over an area of 250 sq km and at depths below the present surface of up to 80 m. The bauxite layer is hard, compact and predominantly pisolitic, with a variety of subordinate, superimposed textures resulting from post-formation alteration. The bauxite minerals are boehmite and gibbsite. Boehmite generally predominates, and the boehmite:gibbsite ratio averages 2:1, with a marked tendency for the proportion of boehmite to increase down the profile. Kaolinite, a major constituent of the profile, is concentrated in two zones, one above and one below the pisolitic bauxite layer. Iron content is variable and bears a direct relationship to parent-rock lithology. Genesis and preservation of the bauxite are due to the favourable coincidence of a number of geological controls of which the most significant are the local structural and sedimentary regimes, the lithology and chemistry of the parent rocks, and the Cretaceous paleogeography of the region.

Red bauxites from Breadnut Valley, Clarendon Parish, Jamaica, are very homogeneous in texture. Bauxite minerals are uniformly distributed in a groundmass, the predominant grain size being smaller than l um (Figure 1 Although the deposits have a massive, non-stratified structure, they all seem to have been affected by postformational faulting which is evidenced by shear zones running subvertically through the deposits. These shear zones stand out very clearly because of a yellow staining along their faces. Often yellow zones, ranging from a few m to several cm in thickness, have developed. When the shear zones are cut at an angle, they appear as yellow veins. Near the surface of the deposits, yellow material forms shallow irregular lenses (Figure 2). In most cases, tree roots (hair roots), or their imprints, are associated with the shear zones or stained areas. In fact, the yellowish color is especially pronounced along these roots and often disappears where the roots end (Figure 3). The mineral composition and texture of red groundmass and yellow zones are markedly different. Secondary phosphate minerals and a higher goethite to hematite ratio characterize the mineral composition of the yellow zones. It should also be noted that Al-substitution in goethite from these areas is significantly higher than in goethite occurring in the groundmass (Figure 4).

In many mines, dust-laden air from an entry being driven by a continuous miner will contaminate the intake air to the roof bolter operator and other downwind personnel. Through a US Bureau of Mines (USBM) contract, Foster-Miller Inc. has evaluated several control techniques to reduce the respirable dust exposures of downwind personnel. One fan and tubing technique consisted of bypassing the miner-generated dust directly to the section return. The results of the evaluation of this technique revealed that reductions in dust concentrations of 90% or more can be achieved at downwind roof bolter locations. A second method was to clean the dusty air from the upwind continuous miner by using a dust collector. The cleaned air was then supplied to the bolter through collapsible tubing. An underground evaluation showed reductions of 82% to 96% when the dust collector was operating. A third method was to reduce the quantity of dust contributed by the miner to the return airstream. A water-powered scrubber was installed over the throat area of the continuous miner. More than 1.18 m3/s (2500 cfm) of dusty air moved through five tubes with dust collection efficiency exceeding 75%. Underground evaluation results showed that return dust concentrations were reduced by about 60%. The Indian Head fine has been in existence since 1922. For over 56 years there have been North Dakota people mining coal at this same location. The area affected will fit inside a circle 5 km in diameter, and the coal is lignite. The seam thickness has varied from 2.4 m to 3.65m, and the overburden from 6 m to 30 m in depth. me Lignite coal which is being mined at the Indian Head Mine is from 15.8 x l0 6 to 16.7 x 10 6 J per kg; it has a moisture content of 33 to 38%; an ash content of 5 to 10%; and a sulfur content of from 0.5 to 0.7%. The moisture content and the fact that we crush the coal co a top size of 14 cm x 0, are two of the characteristics or the product which cause it to freeze and remain inside of the railroad cars on the slope sheets. The market for the coal initially was almost entirely local coal sales. That is, coal was sold to people in the area who used the lignite to heat their homes, stores, offices, schools, and churches. Back in the early 1920's, there were no stoker-fed boilers, or pulverized fuel boilers, as we have in today?s marketplace. Basically, all of the coal was sold as lump coal, pieces about 30 to 35 cm square, to be used in furnaces: and nut coal with a top size of about 7.5 cm to 10 cm to be used in the old kitchen cookstove. All of the coal fines, less than 5 cm, were screened out and layed onto a pile. There was no market for the smaller sizes of the lignite coal. It has been our experience that when the coal is in lumps or chunks larger than 7.5 cm to 10 cm, there is a very slight possibility of freezing. That is the chunks themselves freeze, but by their nature, they do not cling to one another or form large masses of frozen material which are difficult to remove from the slope sheers of the railroad cars.

Acid mine drainage waters generated in the uranium deposit Curilo, Bulgaria, were treated by means of a pilot-scale passive system consisting of an alkalizing limestone drain, a permeable multibarrier for microbial dissimilatory sulphate reduction, biosorption and chemical neutralization, and a natural wetland, connected in a series. The waters had pH in the range of about 2.5 ? 4.1 and contained radionuclides (uranium, radium), heavy metals (copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, nickel, cobalt, iron, manganese), arsenic and sulphates in concentrations usually much higher than the relevant permissible levels for waters intended for use in the agriculture and/or industry. The water flow rate through the passive system varied in the range of about 5 ? 15 m3/24 h, reflecting water residence times of about 60 to 20 hours. An efficient removal of pollutants was achieved by this system during the different climatic seasons, even during the cold winter days at external air and water temperatures close to 0°C. The removal was connected with different mechanisms but the microbial sulphate reduction played the main role during the warmer months of the year. However, during the cold winter days the removal of pollutants was due mainly to their sorption by the solid dead plant biomass (cow manure, plant compost, straw) present in the multibarrier as well as to their precipitation as a result of chemical neutralization caused by crushed limestone.

The Woodsmith Project is located in north-eastern England within the North York Moors National Park. The strata contains the world’s largest known high-grade Polyhalite resource of around 2.66 billion tonnes. The Project was initiated by York Potash Limited (YPL), a subsidiary of Sirius Minerals plc., but in March 2020, a takeover was completed by Anglo American, one of the largest mining companies in the world. Polyhalite is an evaporite mineral and contains essential nutrients required for plant growth. The Polyhalite will be extracted via two deep mine shafts and transported underground from the mine site to a Materials Handling Facility on a Mineral Transport System (MTS), which comprises a high-capacity conveyor belt system located within a 4.9 m ID tunnel. In 2018, STRABAG were awarded with the design and construction of the MTS tunnel and associated infrastructure, including the high-capacity conveyor system. The scope of work consists of 300 m of open cut, 100 m SCL tunnel, 36.5 km TBM drive (originally anticipated as three separate TBM drives) along with a network of underground caverns at the Woodsmith Mine. The construction of two 380 m deep intermediate access shafts was later awarded as Amendments to the Contract. The tunnel is constructed using a Herrenknecht Single Shield TBM. As a result of how the various elements of the project have developed over time, the first TBM drive has been extended to ~29 km making it the worlds longest single heading TBM Tunnel when complete. The option of completing the entire tunnel length with a single heading TBM drive is currently being assessed by Anglo American and STRABAG. This unprecedented tunnel length requires two intermediate shafts to provide essential access and services, the first intermediate shaft is at Lockwood beck (LWB) and the second is at Ladycross (LDX). The LWB shaft has been constructed utilising the innovative Blind Boring technique never used before in the UK. This paper will explain the methodology and technical risk management associated with this technique. The authors believe that the collaborative approach between all contract partners is and continues to be the important contributor for the success of this project.

"Outotec’s TankCell® e500 flotation cell was commissioned during 2014 at the Kevitsa Mine in northern Finland. The TankCell® e500 is the first cell in this size class (500m3) to be run in an operational duty and it has been working as the first rougher in the copper flotation circuit. Treating around 850tph with an average grade of 0.3% Cu the TankCell® e500 has run with an average copper recovery of 71% and an average enrichment ratio of 50. In addition the cell has proved to be very energy efficient, operating with a specific energy of around 0.4kW/m3 under production conditions. This presentation will provide a review of the installation and operation of the TankCell® e500 at Kevitsa and will summarize the results found in the published literature from the various testing campaigns conducted around the cell. INTRODUCTION The TankCell e500 was installed and commissioned at the Kevitsa mine in northern Finland in 2014. Post startup the cell was initially run for testing and optimization with various test campaigns undertaken. but was subsequently taken into a production duty (Mattson et al., 2015a). At Kevitsa the cell is run as the first copper rougher replacing the previous two copper roughers (both 160m3) in this duty. The unit is running at between 38-40% solids at a feed rate of approximately 850tph. Since operational the average copper recovery from this single cell has been around 71% copper. This is typically with an enrichment ratio of around 50 being fed with an average head grade of 0.3% copper. More details on the circuit configuration and production performance of the e500 at Kevitsa can be found in Mattson et al., (2015a) and Murphy et al., (2016). In addition through the optimization program with the use of a variable speed drive controlling rotor speed it was found the the e500 was very energy efficient under production conditions. During this work the cell was found to run at a specific energy of around 0.4kW/m3 which exceeded design expectations (Xia et al., 2015)."
