In the Grasberg Mine, a series of orepasses of diameter 2 to 4m are being constructed, each one to carry as much as 10,000 tlhour of copper- and gold-bearing ore through single stage vertical drops of over 500m. At the base of each orepass, the fragmented rock falls into an orebin of diameter 1 Om and 100m deep. Long before the planned tonnages were reached on the early orepasses, a problem arose that was both serious and intriguing. Pressurization of air in the orebins caused by the falling rock reached such levels that when the feed to the top of an orpass was interrupted, a massive surge of air ascended rapidly and produced a dangerous backblast accompanied by dust; grit and rock fragments from the top of the orepass. Backblasts lasted for about one minute and were not only hazardous to the health and safety of personnel but also required time-consuming clean-up operations. The paper describes the aerodynamic analyses that were con- ducted in order to understand fully the mechanisms involved in the phenomenum, and the development of a procedure that al- lows the effects of falling material to be incorporated into existing ventilation network software.

Production trends have been analyzed for 82 gob gas ventholes on 7 longwall panels in the Lower Kittanning Coalbed, Pennsylvania. Cumulative production from individual holes was found to vary considerably, ranging from 0.03 x 106 m' to 10.1 x 106 m3. Peak production rates were generally about 0.03 to 0.06 x 106 &/d, but rates over 0.10 x 106 m3/d were observed. The variability of gas production from individual holes can be attributed to several factors including: completion practices and problems, the extent of fracture development in the strata above the extracted panel, water production, and location on the panel. Of particular significance, is hole location. Holes on the ends of the panels, where overburden strata are in tension due to the support of the surrounding pillars, were generally the highest and longest producers. This observation led to the experimental placement of gob gas ventholes in the zone of tension along the margin of a panel, instead of in the traditional centerline location which is in compression. Analysis of gob gas production data indicates that the experimental near-margin holes produced 77 pct more gas than did centerline holes on the same panel.

As a supplement to an analysis involving methodologies for the estimation of airflow resistance in shafts used for both ventilation and hoisting, a detailed shaft characterization survey was distributed worldwide. The survey provided detailed information which enabled verification of recommended velocities and established limitations on fill factors and relative velocities. This paper evaluates the information obtained for 37 shafts and presents a statistical evaluation of the results. Apart from airflow rates, conveyance rates, and physical characteristics, qualitative information regarding means of conveyance stability and velocity control techniques at unloading and loading points are also presented. Calculations of fill coefficient, free area velocity, and most importantly, relative velocity between the airflow and hoist, are conducted. These results are presented by frequency diagrams which illustrate the trends, as well as provide limitations for these parameters. The data illustrates that, commonly, the fill coefficient for two or more conveyances, does not exceed 30 %. A limit of 50% is suggested for a single conveyance shaft. A recommended free area velocity of 10 m/s (1,970 ft/min) for combined ventilation and hoisting shafts, is sup- ported by these results. Relative velocities of 30 m/s (5,905 ft/min) are most frequent and 50 m/s (9,840 ft/min) being a practical maximum.

"There are many multi-layer coal reserves in China which account for nearly 20 to 25% of the existing proven reserves. When the coals are mined in a descending order using the fully mechanized long wall mining method, they usually have roof collapse with cavity and air leak in roadways and long wall stopes; this is especially relevant when the thickness of the rock between two coals is less than 5.0 m, as the roof stability of lower seam would be greatly reduced. At the Wuhushan Mine, such abnormal strata behavior occurs, including abnormal support stress, irregular period roof pressure, and roof falls in the face. The main reasons for these behaviors include smaller roof thickness, lower rock strength, and mining influence of upper coal; these reasons were determined by analyzing the in situ conditions. A mechanics-based model of the mine geometry was set up to study the sources of stress, the stress evolution of coal, and the discriminant method of roof stability; to obtain the smallest safe thickness of roof between two coal layers, numerical modeling was applied to analyze the relations between the roof thickness and its displacement distribution. Based on the above research, the No.1001 face was divided into easy roof caving zone (ERCZ), roof caving transition zone (RCTZ), and unlikely to roof caving zone (URCZ). In the ERCZ, comprehensive grouting to reinforce the roof was implemented; in the RCTZ, local grouting to reinforce the roof was implemented. Furthermore, a face stability control index and its range were developed in a fully mechanized face combined with mine pressure observation. After implementing this strategy, there have been no unexpected roof caving or other serious strata behaviors.INTRODUCTIONChina is the country with the largest coal production in the world, and the conditions for its coal seams are particularly complicated. For example, in China’s Datong, Wuda, Pingdingshan, and Qinshui mining areas, there are a large number of multi-layer coal seams. The thickness of these coal seams ranges from 1.3 m to more than 10 m, and the spacing between layers is from under 1.0 m to over 30 m. A common problem with these coal seams is that one layer of mining has a large impact on other coal seams, which are customarily referred to as close-distance coal seams. According to statistics, close-distance coal seams account for about 20–25% and 15–18% of China’s coal reserves and production, respectively.From the reference research of Huang (1999, 2002, 2018) and Tu (2010, 2011) we can learn that in the mining process of close-distance coal seams, downward mining is mainly used. When the upper-layer coal is mined, it has a huge mining disturbance effect on the floor (that is, the roof of the lower coal). The mining disturbance increases the mining fissure in the rockmass and weakens the strata strength. The mining problem formed by this issue is that when the lower coal is mined, problems such as difficulty in roadway support, collapse of stope roof, and difficulty in ventilation are often encountered. Especially for the mining of medium-thick coal seam groups with a layer spacing of less than 5.0 m, there has been a large-scale roof collapse accident with a fall height of more than 10.0 m. In response to such problems, domestic and foreign scholars and engineers such as Tan, Zhao, and Xiao (2010), Xie et al. (2017), and others have also carried out targeted theoretical and practical research."

The Candelaria copper-gold deposit is located in Region m of Chile, 805 kilometers north of the capital, Santiago. Candelaria was discovered in 1987, following a six month exploration program. In late 1986, induced polarization (IP) surveys outlined an anomalously high response within the area of interest. The first test hole bad three intersections totaling 49 meters, with an average grade of 1.97% copper. Drilling eventually outlined approximately 390 million tonnes, grading 1.09010 copper and 0.26 grams/tonne gold. Production began in early 1995 and is estimated at 120,000 tonnes copper and 80,000 ounces gold annually.

"Chicago’s Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) is a nearly $4.0 billion and over 30 years long program and arguably the largest and longest combined sewer tunnel and reservoir system in the world. Recently, a massive tunnel construction is underway for connection of the McCook Reservoir to the existing TARP tunnel system. Once completed in two stages in 2017 and 2019, the reservoir will hold 38 billion-liters (10 billion-gallons) of combined sewer overflows (CSO) and flood waters from the city of Chicago and over 20 communities in Cook County, Illinois. McCook Main Tunnel will connect Chicago TARP’s Mainstream Tunnel to the McCook Reservoir. Connecting two 10-meter (33-ft) diameter tunnels at 92 meters (300 feet) underground has not been a simple task for the McCook Tunnel Project participants, the project owner U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), local sponsor Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago, designer Black & Veatch, and the contractor, Kiewit Infrastructure Company (Kiewit). Yet alone excavating and lining massive size tunnels, the team is also challenged with live tunnel conditions in TARP Mainstream Tunnel that carries CSO and flood flows from city of Chicago which runs full during rain events and must remain in service at all times. The project is a noteworthy feat for engineering and construction with the upcoming installation of world’s largest underground wheel gates for flow control within the tunnel. In this paper, we describe one of its kind elements of this major tunnel system along with key design and construction considerations, specifically for the live tunnel connection which is a rare occurrence in the tunneling industry. INTRODUCTION The McCook Main Tunnel system consists of a 10 m (33 ft) finished diameter and 490 m (1,600 ft) long hard rock tunnel constructed from a 27.5 m (90 ft) diameter and 92 m (300 ft) deep main gate and tunnel construction access shaft. The gate shaft houses six high head 4.4 m by 9 m (14.5 ft by 29.5 ft) wheel gates to be installed in the bifurcated and steel lined section of the tunnel. The tunnel also includes portal and energy dissipation structures as it daylights into the reservoir."

The machine will be used for carrying out research and development programs aimed toward improving the design and operation of mechanical tunnel, raise and shaft boring equipment.

The Mid-Continent Geophysical Anomaly (M.G.A.) which extends from Michigan into Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas, has recently been the object of intense preliminary oil and gas exploration activity involving widespread land leasing, seismic data collection, permitting of deep exploratory holes and other activities (Paul et al., 1985). This report describes the remote-sensing techniques and results of the application of these techniques to study the geology of the M.G.A. and the surroundings in Iowa. In early 1981, Coal Valley Natural Resources contracted Geospectra Corporation to find a large, (100,000 acres or larger) lease block for wildcat oil and gas exploration. The southwest Iowa area was chosen for several reasons. First, southwest Iowa contains the northeast portion of the Forest City basin (Figure 1) which has produced oil and gas from numerous fields in Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska (Landes, 1970; Petzet, 1982).

Construction of Shaft 17B-1, a part of The New York City water supply system, required an excavation of approximately 38 m (123 ft) through water-bearing overburden soil and more than 152 m (500 ft) of gneiss bedrock to make a connection to Water Tunnel No. 3. Ground freezing was the specified method to provide temporary earth support and ground water control for the overburden material. The ground freezing process relied on a supplemental geotechnical investigation and comprehensive laboratory testing of the frozen soil to evaluate the potential long-term creep behavior of the soil and the elimination of a temporary lining system. This paper describes that process as well as the drilling and installation methods of the ground freezing system. Additionally, the methodical system of excavation and insulation is discussed that permitted a safe and timely excavation followed by the installation of the permanent concrete liner.

In the present paper, two large diameter columns 2 m tall and 1.3 m diameter filled with crushed (finer) and run off mine (coarser) heap leach materials respectively were used to perform unsaturated flow studies. Instruments measuring moisture content and matric suction were placed in the columns at different depths as water was applied at calibrated flow rates from the top of the columns. The outflows from the columns were recorded using tipping bucket rain gauge placed at the bottom of the columns. Unsaturated hydraulic parameters were also obtained for the heap leach materials, scalped (passing 4.75 mm sieve size) and whole (passing 37.5 mm sieve size) sample. The measurements obtained from the columns were later compared with unsaturated flow modeling results. The comparison indicated sensitivity towards the sample size selection for unsaturated hydraulic parameters, and initial conditions considered in the model.

The City of Phoenix, Arizona designed a 7.2 km (4.5 mi) long water transmission main from the South Mountain Reservoir to the Ahwatukee Foothills Reservoir to address the growing demand for drinking water in the southeast valley. The pipeline design called for a bored tunnel in a very environmentally sensitive area. The Reach3B contract included an 2.44 m (8 ft) diameter TBM excavated tunnel, 1,847 m(6,060 ft) in length. The geotechnical investigation revealed that the tunnel would likely pass through zones of loose to moderately cemented soils (caliche). The primary tunnel support would consist of rock bolts, circular steel ribs, hard wood lagging, and mine straps. A TBM that could handle the ground conditions and allow for efficient ground support installation was required. This paper describes the construction of a small diameter rock tunnel in challenging ground conditions.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is the fourth panel cave mine in the East Ertsberg Skarn System, (EESS) which lies 500 m below the producing Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine and up to 1,700 m below the surface. The interaction between the DMLZ and DOZ is occurring as the DMLZ cave grows vertically toward the DOZ footprint. During this process, a rapid change in the global mine system stress is anticipated. This change is forecasted to drive substantial changes in the magnitude and direction of principal stresses in the DMLZ and DOZ mines at PT Freeport Indonesia. These changes will bring the mine system closer to the ultimate capacity of the excavations and can result in significant impacts to mine stability if not managed. Critical to this management, is understanding cave growth and locations, as well as how these changes will impact stress conditions.

This paper presents the case history of a comprehensive geotechnical investigation for the Crosstown Transport Facility, a 10,880 m long, 3.2 m diameter pressure tunnel proposed for construction in San Francisco, California. The proposed tunnel would be part of the City and County of San Francisco's Clean Water Program, and its purpose would be to convey stormwater and sewage from the east side of the City to the Pacific Ocean. Tunneling conditions were defined by surface geologic mapping, 94 exploratory borings, surface and borehole geophysics, aquifer testing, Goodman Jack testing, pressuremeter testing, and laboratory testing. Through the use of advanced coring techniques and a strictly controlled drilling fluid system, core recovery averaged 90 percent in the sheared and fractured rock of the Franciscan Formation. As a result, over 1,400 linear meters of rock core was recovered and is available for examination.

Swelling ground is one of the most feared problem in tunneling. Although usually not causing sudden failures during construction, the very large and long- lasting deformations give contractors and designers the impression of facing an inevitable phenomenon against which there is no technical defense. Examples are concrete liners of up to 1 m that have been cracked or crushed, tunnel inverts that are heaving at a rate of 0.1 m per week during construction and continue to heave during decades. This author (Einstein (1979). Einstein et al. (1972) (1975)) and others (Huller (19761, Grob (1972) (1976). Golta (1967), tienke (19761, Krause (1976). Lee et al. (1976)) have described many cases of swelling tunnels that illustrate the significance and magnitude of the problem. This paper intends to show that tunnels in swelling rock can be built to perform satisfactorily. . For this purpose the tunnel builder needs to know how to determine the existence and specific behavior of swelling ground, how to select appropriate structural characteristics of the tunnel and predict its performance under the specific ground conditions, and finally how to construct the tunnel such that the anticipated performance will be achieved. This concept of a design-construction procedure is the same as that for tunneling in general; it is mentioned here for NO reasons: 1. To point out that design and construction cannot and should not be separated. The way in which the tunnel will be built has to be an integral part of the design. 2. This paper will be structured corresponding to the procedural concept.

"Testing of the roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) designed by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has gone through many iterations, demonstrating successful dust control performance under controlled laboratory conditions. J.H. Fletcher & Co., an original equipment manufacturer of mining equipment, further developed the concept by incorporating it into the design of its roof bolting machines. In the present work, laboratory testing was conducted, showing dust control efficiencies ranging from 17.2 to 24.5 percent. Subsequent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis revealed limitations in the design, and a potential improvement was analyzed and recommended. As a result, a new CAC design is being developed, incorporating the results of the testing and CFD analysis.IntroductionExposure to respirable coal mine dust can cause coal workers’ pneumo-coniosis (CWP), also known as black lung. If silica is present in the dust, the miner may develop silicosis in addition to CWP. CWP and silicosis are occupational respiratory diseases that are ultimately fatal and have no cure. The only method of prevention is to eliminate exposure to respirable coal mine dust and crystalline silica, or quartz. The occupational exposure limit on a Mining Research Establishment (MRE) basis for respirable coal mine dust had been 2 mg/m3 during each shift that a miner is exposed in the active workings of the mine or in mine facilities. Under recently enacted legislation, this standard was changed in August 2016 to 1.5 mg/m3 for a full working shift (The Office of the Federal Register, 30 CFR 70.100, 2015). When respirable quartz is present, the mine must maintain its average concentration at or below 0.1 mg/m3. If the mine exceeds the 0.1 mg/m3 respirable quartz dust concentration, then the applicable respirable dust standard is reduced, calculated as 10 divided by the percentage of quartz present (The Office of the Federal Register, 30 CFR 70.101, 2015).The sources of exposure to respirable coal mine dust for roof bolting occupations include infrequent maintenance and cleaning of the vacuum dust collection system and operating the bolter downwind — in the return air — of the continuous miner (Good-man and Organiscak, 2003). Recent studies have demonstrated that vacu-um dust collection systems are effective in capturing bolter-generated dust if maintained and operated correctly and if proper face ventilation techniques are used. However, most expo-sure to respirable coal mine dust for a roof bolter occurs when the roof bolter machine is operated downwind of the continuous miner (Potts, Reed and Colinet, 2011; Colinet, Reed and Potts, 2013). Because of this higher exposure downwind of the continuous miner, the roof bolter is often limited to working downwind of the miner only once during a production shift."

During the first four decades of flotation practice, close to 200 machine designs were patented, although only about a score were ever used commercially. By the end of that period, the rigors of use had resulted in obsolescence of most pneumatic cells, with a few mechanical cells dominating the field. After World War II, newer designs began to appear but most were modifications in varying degrees of older designs with special features added. Of the dozen or so most recent developments, almost all are pneumatic, relying on compressed air instead of impellers for motive power, although in several cases pumps supplement compressors. Table 1 lists a few of the more fully documented new cells, with their significant characteristics, along with similar characteristics of a widely used mechanical cell. New designs in general are emphasizing: bubble size control; in several cases, methods for delivering feed directly to the froth; methods for introducing and dispersing air through nozzles, eductors, packed beds, or permeable walls; and variable cell volumes, relative to capacities, ranging from very small, with less than a second of retention time, to the largest, with retention times of over 20 min. An important question is the extent to which any of the newer designs are based on locating weaknesses in current mechanical cell designs and then using these as a starting point for innovations. In the present study, the key subprocesses which must take place in a cell are outlined; mechanical cells are analyzed to establish where weaknesses may exist; and then alternative subprocesses are considered which could effect improvements. COMPONENTS FOR CELL DESIGN It is assumed that mineral surface chemistry has been modified as necessary to provide optimum potential floatability. While the cell process may affect this to a degree, cell design is primarily concerned with actualizing the existing potential floatability. Rosebud Mining Co. (RMC) is based in Kittanning, PA. As of October 2013, it operated 24 active underground mines in Pennsylvania and Ohio. RMC?s Tracy Lynne Mine is located approximately 5 km (3 miles) east of Apollo, PA, (approximately 48 km or 30 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, PA) and mines the Lower Kittanning coal seam. The coal seam averages approximately 1.1 m (45 in.) thick and is of steam coal market quality. The mine is a single unit operation. Coal is mined using a continuous mining machine and is transported from the face to the conveyor belt using a continuous haulage system. Typical ventilation in the mine consists of an exhausting fan that draws air through isolated intake, belt and return air courses (Fig. 1).

Leaching studies of low-grade manganese ore containing 31.77% Mn and 23.71 % Fe from Nishikhal, India, were carried out using pyritiferous lignite as a reductant in sulfuric acid medium. The variables studied were quantity of lignite, sulfuric acid concentration and temperature. Regression equations for the extraction of manganese and potassium were determined from 23 full factorial design data. The experimental conditions for the extraction of manganese were optimized using the steepest-ascent method. It was found that 99.03% of the manganese could be extracted in three hours with an ore to lignite ratio of 1:1.8, a sulfuric acid concentration of 1.9 M and a temperature of 99°C. INTRODUCTION The shield-driven method in Japan has been adopted widely in soft ground tunneling, namely, subway, water supply, sewer and utility tunnels, and recently this is an indispensable method in urban area. Since this method was started to adopt on a full scale from the beginning of 1960, construction achievements in length were about 830 km for 15 years until 1974 (1). According to the recent informations of the Japan Tunneling Association, the achievement in length under construction as of December, 1977, was about 350 km (2) and the extention of increase in shield-driven method can be guessed (Tab. 1). The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP) is a 10.4-km- (6.5- mile-) long, 14.4-m (47.5-ft) bored tunnel that will run under the city of Niagara Falls from the Upper Niagara River to the Sir Adam Beck power station. The completed project will enhance the capacity of the Sir Adam Beck power station by adding 500 m3 /sec (17,657 cu ft/sec) of water through the tunnel. The project uses the world?s largest hard-rock tunnel boring machine (TBM) at 14.4 m (47.5 ft) in diameter to excavate the tunnel. Features of the project include the use of a high performance (HP) main beam TBM, state-of-the-art ground support and tunnel logistics systems. A continuous conveyor is used for muck transport from the TBM to the disposal area In June 2004, the Ontario government announced that Ontario Power Generation (OPG) had been given approval to proceed with the third tunnel under the city of Niagara Falls ? the first two tunnels were constructed in the 1950s using drill-and-blast techniques. The third tunnel, appropriately named the Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP), consists of a 10.4-km- (6.5-mile-) long TBM-bored, concrete-lined tunnel with a finished diameter of 12.5 m (41.1 ft). In August 2005, OPG the selected of Strabag of Austria, one of the largest construction companies in Europe, as the contractor to build the NTP at a price of C$600 million. In September 2005, Strabag selected The Robbins Co. of Solon, OH to design, manufacture and deliver a new 14.4- m- (47.5-ft-) diameter high performance, state-of-the-art main beam hard rock TBM to be used in the excavation of the tunnel. To meet the aggressive construction schedule as requested by OPG/Strabag, the TBM needed to be sup-plied as ready-to-bore within a 12-month period after the contract was awarded to Robbins.
