Installation of a horizontal air blocking shelf around the inside perimeter of the surface mining drill deck shroud is proposed to improve dust capture. Without the use of this shelf, a strong coanda effect airflow pattern results in dust leakage to the environment, especially at the shroud-to-ground interface. Bailing air exits the drill hole and travels along the drill steel to the underside of the table, where it fans out across the bottom of the drill table and continues down the sides of the shroud. This dust-laden bailing air then strikes the ground and fans out under gaps between the shroud and the ground. The proposed shelf prevents dust-laden air from striking the ground by redirecting it toward the center of the enclosure, where it can be captured. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the shelf reduced dust levels outside of the shroud by 81% under operating conditions consisting of a 1.9:1 collector to bailing airflow ratio, and a 5.1-cm (2-in) gap between the shroud and ground. The shelf was 15.2-cm (6-in) wide and located at a height equal to 2/3 the distance measured from the bottom of the shroud to the bottom of the drill table. The air blocking shelf was also capable of overcoming the adverse impact of vertical leakage along the shroud seams as long as this leakage was confined to an area below the horizontal plane defined by the shelf location.

Four years ago, Ashland Chemical Company introduced a new copper solvent extraction reagent for hydrometallurgical utilization. The reagent, an alkylated 8-hydroxyquinoline, is called Kelex 100 ®(1). Since the time of introduction, the reagent has been investigated by several workers for its solvent extraction utility in the separation and purification of transition metals (2-7). In the following text, those factors which are essential to the optimum performance of Kelex 100 on concentrated copper solutions will be discussed. To date, the reagent has been found useful in active concentrations of from 1 to 20% Kelex 100. In order to achieve the best performance for Kelex 100, it has been found that a phase modifier is essential. Various alcohols and phenols have been evaluated in order to improve phase performance and stripping characteristics of the solvent system. Modifiers and diluents are especially important when solvent activities between 3 and 20% Kelex 100 are employed. A 15% Kelex 100 solvent, for example, containing 15% nonyl phenol in Escaid 100 (Exxon) can be utilized to remove greater than 33 grams per liter of copper from an aqueous feed without interstage neutralization, and in the same process scheme the reagent can be stripped to less than 1 gram per liter barren organic producing a pregnant electrolyte containing greater than 40 grams per liter copper and less than 120 grams per liter sulphuric acid. The unusually efficient stripping of Kelex is accomplished by protenation of the extractive molecule during the stripping process.

Complete isolation of chromium (III) from the reference material (SARM 131), Upper Group 2 (UG2) chromite ore, and Merensky Reef mineral ore was achieved using ammonium phosphate salt as flux. Optimum pH (3.2–3.8) conditions and sample to flux ratios (1:25) were some of the factors that were critical for the complete isolation of chromium. Increasing the sample to flux ratio (1:50 excess) however resulted in the conversion of all the elements in the melt into a green solution (pH, 5.8–6.7). A different chromium compound was subsequently isolated from the green solution by allowing this solution to stand in an open vessel in a cupboard for a month during which time the pH decreased to pH 3.5–4.2. Quantitative analyses of chromium from the isolated precipitates of SARM 131, UG2 chromite ore, and Merensky Reef mineral ore indicated chromium contents of 41.87, 60.41, and 23.93% respectively which were very close to the chromium content in the original samples. Analysis of the chromium precipitates using IR indicated the presence of phosphates (1100–1200 cm−1 ) while SEM-EDX analysis showed the presence of microscopic crystalline particles with Cr, P, and O as the major elements. Further characterization of the chromium precipitates using XRD and Raman successfully identified the product as chromium (III) metaphosphate C-type (Cr(PO3)3, JCPDS no. 01-077-0672), in the isolated chromium precipitates.

A large portion of the energy consumed in copper concentrators is used to reduce the particle size of the feed by crushing and grinding. The cost of metal production could be reduced if low-grade particles of cm size were removed prior to further processing. Two copper sulfide ore samples (3 × 1 cm) from Arizona were analyzed by micro X-ray computed tomography (Micro-XCT) to determine the grade of copper sulfide in each particle. For copper ore sample A, a significant number of particles contained very low amounts of copper, while some particles had copper sulfide grains of mm size. Based on Micro-XCT, it was expected that 85% of the copper for sample A could be recovered at 65% of mass rejection during preconcentration by sorting. However, in sample B (a different copper ore), distribution of copper sulfide was dispersed primarily in each ore particle, so for the particle size class of 3 × 1 cm, liberation of copper sulfide and gangue minerals was not significant. In view of the XCT results, dual energy (DE) X-ray radiography was used as a basis for sorting. Previous DE X-ray radiography of a drill core sample demonstrated that this rapid detection method can be used to identify rich or poor Cu-bearing coarse particles. Pilot scale X-ray sorting of sample A (10 × 1 cm) showed 31% rejection of a 0.08% Cu gangue product with a corresponding recovery of 90% copper.

A new P(MAAA) latex was developed and used in separation of ultrafine apatite from calcite and silica by means of selective flocculation. The latex was found to flocculate selectively apatite from apatite/calcite and apatite/silica mixtures in the presence of sodium tripolyphosphate and sodium silicate over a pH range from 9.1 to 9.4. The separation of apatite from calcite was more selective with sodium tripolyphosphate, while the results of the separation of apatite from silica were better when sodium silicate was used. In the apatite/calcite system, 90% apatite recoveries into a concentrate containing 34% P2O5 were possible in the presence of 4 mg/l of sodium tripolyphosphate at a latex dosage of 2.2 kg/t. In the apatite/silica system, 80% of apatite could be recovered into a concentrate containing 33% P2O5 in the presence of 20 mg/l of sodium silicate at a latex dosage of 1.1 kg/t. Deposition tests were used to study the interaction between the latex and the mineral surfaces. The results revealed that deposition density of the latex on apatite was higher than on calcite; the differences between the deposition onto these two minerals were higher at pH 9.2 than at 7.2. The results point to the stronger interaction between the latex and apatite surface when compared with the latex-calcite interactions.

The study of flotation kinetics was first reported by Garcia-Zuniga1 in 1935. Since then, literature on the subject has grown with the time. 2-19 Although there is an abundance of flotation kinet¬ics models available in the literature to describe flo¬tation systems, they are mostly of academic interest and are seldom applicable for use in the industrial environment. Several reasons contribute to the wide gap in the industrial -application of the academic models. These include: 1) the lack of generality in the model, e.g., the model is limited to certain size ranges; 14 2) the academic models involve complicated mathematics; 5,6,10,11 3) confusion about the order of the flo¬tation rate, e.g., several authors proposed a first order rate model, 1,15,16 whereas the others propagated a second order rate model: 2,17,18,194) the use of an unrealistic rigid value, such as the use of a maximum recovery of 100%, 5,8,19 which is unrealistic in industrial operations; and 5) the use of graphs that confuse the reader rather than interpret information. 2,3,10 This paper intends to introduce a simple and easy to understand empirical flotation kinetics model along with a way of presenting the model in an informative graphical form, which should stimulate the interest of other practical engineers to become concerned with practical application within the mineral industry.

For new coal-fired power plants, federal regulations require that emissions of sulfur dioxide be limited to 1.2 pounds for every million BTU'S burned. This is equivalent to coal with a sulfur content of roughly 0.7 percent for Eastern bituminous coals and roughly 0.6 percent for Western sub-bituminous coals. The states and their political subdivisions are free to apply more stringent standards and to develop implementation plans covering existing and new units. Most Western-sub-bituminous coals contain less than 1% sulfur and hence their use, in many cases, will allow a utility to meet the regulations. However, there are problems in using such coals in furnaces designed for Eastern bituminous coals, and furthermore it will take many years to open mines and provide transportation facilities to utilities which are now burning coals with a higher sulfur content. Moreover, pending federal legislation would outlaw strip mining on land to which the federal government owns the mining rights. Those utilities who, for one reason or another, intend to continue burning Eastern bituminous coals with sulfur contents in excess of 1 percent are faced with removing SO2 from the stack gases. The alternative of utilizing coal gasification where the sulfur is removed prior to burning in a power plant is still in the early stages of development. Therefore, a large number of processes are under development for SO2 control.

The San Luis deposit is one of the few documented gold deposits on a detachment surface. This paper presents mineralogic and geochemical data that was gathered to characterize the mineralization, classify the ore deposit, and provide details of the ore forming process. Included are data on the paragenesis; alteration-mineral assemblages major and trace element geochemistry, and fluid inclusions. The San Luis deposit occurs on the western slope of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains adjacent to the San Luis Basin about 5 miles northeast of the town of San Luis in Costillo County, south-central Colorado. Mineralization was discovered in the district in the early 17th century. Production began in 1890 on lead-silver ores from which the district took the name the old name of "El Plomo". From 1897 through 1934 gold was intermittently produced. Battle Mountain Gold Company took an option on the property in 1987 and proved on ore body comprising an eastern block that has 1,277,300 t ore at a grade of 1.68 g/t and a western block of 9,744,000 t with a grade of 1.34 g/t. Production began in 1990. A companion paper by Benson (1994) describes the San Luis district and the ore body, hence the reader is referred to this or Robert and David (1990) for details of the geology from which the following is summarized.

The perlite review arrived too late to appear in the June issue. Worldwide production of perlite in 1991 was estimated to be 1.7 Mt (1.9 million st). Events in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union caused reporting of production, consumption and reserves from those regions to cease. The US Bureau of Mines reported data only from the US and Greece. Together, the two countries produced about 701 kt (773,000 st), down from 739 kt (815,000 st) in 1990. US production of perlite amounted to about 547 kt (603,000 st) last year. US production was supplied by 10 companies operating 11 mines in seven western states. There are 74 plants producing expanded perlite in 33 states and in Canada. All the companies engaged in mining perlite are also expanding it.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection in 1998 reviewed its permitting process to determine how effective its program has been in preventing pollution and to identify here it could be improved. Of the 1,699 bituminous mine permits issued from 1987 to 1 996, 50 were identified to have current or past postmining discharges with water quality problems. The remaining 1,649 sites had no known current or past postmining discharges problems. The 50 sites were selected for further review. On closer examination, 33 of these permits no longer had water quality problems or the problem had not actually resulted from the permitted mining activity. Only 17 permits, or one percent of the total permits issued, were found to have caused long-term postmining discharges serious enough to require treatment and prevent bond release. Analysis of these 17 sites using current knowledge of mine drainage prediction, revealed that the most common cause of error was inadequate information in the permit application. Errors in interpretation of the application data and in implementing the permit were less common. A very small percentage of all permits issued resulted in postmining discharges for no clearly identifiable reason. Trends over the 10-year study period indicated a decreasing incidence of permits resulting in postmining discharges. Further, with the exception of the first few years of data, most of the postmining discharges were of mildly acidic or alkaline quality and amenable to passive treatment.

The Flow-Through Shares Program was set up by the Canadian Federal Government in 1978. While initial annual expenditures in flow-through shares was small, recognition of flow-through as a significant tax advantage combined with exploration successes, particularly in the gold sector, soon resulted in the majority of exploration dollars raised in Canada utilizing the flow-through share mechanism. What Are Flow-Through Shares As many exploration companies are non-taxable, they are not in a position to benefit from the tax deductions arising out of their exploration activities. Flow-through financing provides a mechanism for the exploration company to transfer these deductions to an investor. In addition to the deductions which an investor can apply against his personal income, the investor receives common shares in the exploration company (flow-through shares). To add to the attraction, the Federal government provides a 33 1/3 percent mark-up on qualifying expenses incurred by the exploration company, giving the investor a deduction of up to $1.33 for every $1.00 invested. By providing the investor with tax deductions in addition to the flow-through shares, flow through shares can often be sold at a premium to market which makes-the mechanism attractive to the exploration company as well. These shares are often sold through private placements and therefore have to be held for one year. The tax cost of the share is deemed to be ril, so the entire proceeds on disposal are

This report concerns the successful construction of Contract No. 287 of the Northeast Side Relief Sewer System for the Metropolitan Sewerage District of the County of Milwaukee. The contract involved the construction of approximately 3316 meters (10,880 feet) of tunnel concrete lined to 1.83 meters (72 inch) internal diameter; 30.48 meters (100 feet) of 1.83 meters (72 inch) reinforced concrete pipe jacked-in-place; a river crossing of approximately 107 meters (350 feet); 197 meters (647 feet) of 1.83 meters (72 inch) reinforced concrete pipe in open-cut; several diversion and flow monitoring structures; and miscellaneous manholes and appurtenances. The contract proposal, which was extremely prescriptive, did allow alternative methods of primary support consisting of precast reinforced concrete segments, steel liner plates, steel ribs with wood lagging, and combinations thereof in designated areas. The specifications required the contractor to designate which support scheme it intended to use. The specifications also required compressed air as a means of ground water control for approximately 2316 meters (7600 feet) of tunnel. The alternative selected in the bid proposal was the support method consisting of steel ribs and wood lagging for 2263 meters (7425 feet) of tunnel and steel liner plates for the remaining section. Shaft supports, by specification, were designed to be steel liner plate with steel ribs varying in size from 4.27 meters to 6.10 meters (14 foot O.D. to 20 foot O.D. ).

As the trend to deeper mines, producing from marginal ore bodies, continues, mine hoists and their associated equipment will become more sophisticated, complex, large and expensive. Over the past two decades, mine hoisting equipment and systems have moved from steam engines to static rectification of ac to dc, and electronic controls are the standard. It is the intent of this section to present what is currently available in the field of mine hoisting equipment and systems. Because the present engineer has been exposed longer and more intensively to such things as computers, electronic devices, and machine design, no attempt has been made to make this a layman's article. Contributions from the electrical design and application engineer, gearing and hearing design engineers and other specialists have been incorporated. Some material will be devoted to electrical drive systems, rectifiers and gearing design among others. These items are inherent in the design of a mine hoisting system and the subsequent selection of the correct, most reliable and most economic system. The mine hoist can be a bottleneck between the underground mine and the surface mill. Correct selection of the right type of hoist is imperative. In this vital link between mine and mill, crude estimates of hoist capacity are not good enough, and the mining engineer must design and select the right hoisting system to meet the design specifications. 15.1-MINE HOIST TYPES There are two basic types of mine hoists available anywhere in the world today: the drum hoist on which the hoist rope is actually stored during the hoisting cycle, and the friction (Koepe), which merely passes the rope over the wheel during the hoisting process. Drum and friction hoists are "generic" terms which describe the two basic categories. Within each category are variations, as below. 15.1.1-DRUM HOISTS Drum hoists, as noted, actually store the hoist rope on the drum much the same as line on a fishing reel. To accomplish this task, the drums are so designed to store, in one or more layers, the footage of wire rope equal to the total maximum hoisting distance plus sufficient rope for cutting and inspection at regular intervals and for holding to the drum (see Fig. 15-1). Usual practice in hoist drum design is to allow three turns of hoist rope for holding on the drum and three turns for inspection cuttings. 1. Single-Drum Hoists-Fig. 15-2 shows a typical single-drum hoist as manufactured by most U.S. heavy-mining-equipment companies. With the exception of some very minor features, this design configuration is standard throughout the U.S.A. Fig. 15-3 is a plan view of a typical single-drum mine hoist. This particular hoist has a single-motor drive and a double-reduction set of gearing.

INTRODUCTION Run-of-mine (ROM) coal generally falls into two major groups: that from underground mining (continuous mining machines) and that from strip mining. Continuous miners produce a finer product and strip mining a coarser product that is crushed to produce the desired size. Further size reduction depends on the proposed use or uses for the coal. For example, for pulverized coal power plants as a rough general rule, the coal is ground or pulverized to 80% less than 200 mesh (0.075 mm) before it is blown into the boiler furnace as a coal-air suspension. For solvent-refined coal processes, the desired size is about <30 mesh (< 0.60 mm); in fluidized bed uses, the coal is typically < 8, in. (< 1.6 mm); for Lurgi pressure gasifiers, the desired size is 1 to 2% in. (25 to 63 mm). Coal preparation plants typically work with a coarse size fraction of 6X 1/14 in. (150X32 mm). The past decades has shown a steady increase in the tonnage of coal cleaned, 1 but it seems probable that the next decades will produce much wider applica- tion of deep coal cleaning before use and that the stages of crushing and pulverization from ROM coal to end use will be integrated with coal cleaning processes. Since different cleaning processes work better with different ranges of coal size and the degree of cleaning possible is intimately connected with the size of coal, a systems design engineer will need as much information as possible concerning the size distributions produced by different types of machines and how these can be modified by different ways of operating the machines. In general, the following questions will be of concern: 1.What type of crusher or grinder is best, or most satisfactory, for reducing a given feed size and type of coal to a desired product size? Frequently, the desired product is smaller than some nominal size, but with as few fines as possible, or the fraction in some size range has to be as high as possible. 2. How big does the machine have to be for a given throughput rate? 3. How much electrical energy (or its equivalent) is required per ton of product? 4. How does the size distribution vary with change in throughput rate, and is a control scheme necessary or desirable? 5. Can the size distribution be readily varied if desired? 6. What is the optimum way to operate a machine in a given system? This section will emphasize certain general principles which guide us in answering these questions. 7.1-STABILITY OF SLOPES IN SOIL AND ROCK ROBERT H. MERRILL 7.1.1-DESIGN ANALYSIS APPROACHES The analyses of slopes in soil or rock can be made through application of soil- or rock-mechanics principles. In most cases, the material in the slope wall can easily be identified as either a soil or a rock. However, there will be instances where, because of unique characteristics, the soil may behave as a rock structure, or vice versa. By necessity, these unique cases must be identified through experience or critical observation by the engineer, because there are no definitive rules clearly establishing the differences. The most important step in a solution to a slope problem is to define it. Normally, once the problem is identified, a solution usually can be found or a reasonable estimate obtained. The design analysis of a slope wall implies an evaluation of the stresses or forces in the wall, and of the ability of the material in the wall to withstand them. Therefore, the factors influencing a design analysis can be divided into two categories: those which influence stresses, and those which influence the ability of the wall to withstand stress. For simplification, the latter is termed the strength of the soil or rock. Perhaps the basic difference between analyses for soils and those for rock is in the identification of the failure surface. Soils generally do not have an identifiable failure plane. However, some soil layers in a slope wall may have different strengths. A soil slope wall may consist of a thin layer of topsoil overlying a thick, uniform clay, or a topsoil over a gravel or other materials. Therefore, the soil generally does not have a potential plane of weakness that can be identified through observation. On the other hand, rocks normally contain planes of weakness in the form of fractures, faults, joints, bedding planes or other discontinuities weaker than the intact rock, which can be found through observation and/or tests upon rock samples. If the failure surface cannot be identified, the principles of soil mechanics should apply because, in soil mechanics, the failure surface usually is assumed. If it can be identified, then the principles of rock mechanics should apply. 7.1.2-ANALYSES OF STRESSES OR FORCES IN SLOPES All existing methods of soil-slope analysis are based upon interpetations of the Coulomb and Coulomb-Navier failure criteria, commonly termed the total-stress 2nd the effective-stress criteria (Sec. 6.1). The purpose of this paper is to describe the possible application of two relatively new technologies: flat load cells, and improvement seeking computer programs (referred to in the literature as heuristic programs); to a very old problem, inventors control of ball mills. The combination of these two technologies seems most applicable to grate discharge mills operated closed circuit. It is possible that other applications such as controlling the inventory of autogeneous mills might also be found. Direct control of ball mill inventory has been the goal of a number of investigators over many years. Many patents and articles on the subject have claimed success, but operating installations are hard to locate. An excellent review of the advantages and problems of direct inventory control is contained in an article by Oswald and Ziegler (1). Figure 1 is a conventional representation of throughput vs. inventory with other factors such as slurry consistency and rock twee held constant. There are common sense, physical arguments? and experimental evidence supporting the existence of a unimodel curve of this twee? though direct measurement of the shape is difficult and how it moves as rock type changes is riot well known. Figure 2 represents the problem faced by all mass measurements of inventory, a tare weight of about 25 time the inventory mass. The presence of residual uranium and other radionuclides in the uranium mill tailings are posing a continuous health concern to the surrounding environment. The slow generation of sulphuric acid from residual sulphide minerals is the cause of persistant dissolution and discharge of many metallic components of the tailings. The most effective long term solution to these problems would seem to be to produce chemically stable tailings. This paper describes two possible answers to the objective: (1) Removal of radionuclides and pyrite from tailings by mineral dressing techniques; some 60 - 68% of the residual uranium, 70 - 75% of the radium, 60 - 65% of the thorium and 95 - 98% of the pyrite have been rejected from the Elliot Lake tailings. The decontaminated tailings contained 0.003% uranium, 50 - 60 pCi/g radium226, 0.01% thorium and less than 0.1% sulphur as pyrite. (2) Preconcentration of radionuclides and pyrite by beneficiation from Elliot Lake ores prior to leaching; applying this approach about 97% of the uranium, 95% of the radium, 92% of the thorium and 98.5% of the sulphides were concentrated in a radionuclide and pyrite concentrates comprising 25% and 8% of the ore, respectively. The preconcentration tailings (waste) produced contained 0.004% uranium, 20 - 25 pCi/g radium226, 0.005% thorium and less than 0.1% sulphur as pyrite. Economic and environmental advantages of both approaches and the leaching of the concentrates are also discussed.

"The supply chain for coal-fired power stations involve a multi-stage network of mining units, preparation plants, blending facilities and transportation systems. Attempts to optimize the supply chain have historically been difficult due to the lack of communication/coordination between the various groups involved in coal production, transportation and utilization. In light of this issue, a new approach for globally optimizing the coal supply chain called Micro-Price Optimization has been developed to simplify the optimization problem and to provide coal producers with fundamental insight needed to improve the profitability of their operations. This fundamental concept assigns unit values to each particles (or groups of particles) passing through production units. Optimization occurs whenever the maximum tonnage of positive value particles are recovered and passed to market, while the minimum tonnage of negative value particles are recovered. Elements considered by the concept include factors such as target boiler cost/efficiency, waste disposal costs, coal quality parameters, emission penalties, transportation charges, or other quantifiable impact factors. This article reviews the basis for the micro-price concept and provides a detailed industrial case study involving the determination of optimum coal qualities that need to be supplied by mine operators to feed a coal-fired power station. INTRODUCTION The performance of coal preparation plants have long been known to play an important role in determining the overall profitability of mining operations. This significance is due to the fact that the misplacement of just 1 ton/hr of clean coal to reject resulting from poor plant performance can represent nearly $300,000 per year in lost revenues for a mine producing a steam market coal (i.e., 1 ton/hr x $50/ton x 6,000 hr/yr = $300,000/yr). This loss can be even more pronounced, occasionally approaching $1 million per year for each 1 ton/hr of misplaced clean coal, for operations producing high-quality coking coal products sold into the premium metallurgical market (i.e., 1 ton/hr x $150/ton x 6,000 hr/yr = $900,000/yr). Detailed economic studies indicate that improvements in plant yield resulting from increases in organic efficiency have one of the largest overall impacts on mine revenue when compared to other cost centers within the mining operation. One of the first studies to show this important financial impact was reported by Norton-Hambleton Consultants (Norton, 1979). Their study indicated that an unfavorable change in plant efficiency was second only to coal transportation in terms of its impact on profitability, while an unfavorable change in the cost of underground mining was a distance third. This longstanding realization has continued to provide a strong financial incentive for coal producers to optimize the separation efficiency of their coal processing and blending operations."

The Columbia Slough Consolidation Conduit Project is a 12 ft. 0 in. inside diameter—15 ft. 4 in. excavated diameter tunnel, 8,300 lf. in length. The tunnel is divided in two parts a 4,460 lf. reach to the West and a 3,770 lf. reach to the East separated by a flow regulation structure in the middle. The project was built for the City of Portland, Oregon Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) by the Frank Coluccio Construction Company (FCCC) Seattle, Washington under a $22,600,000.00 contract starting in 1998 and completing the contract in 2000 at a total cost to the City of $25,448,000. An increase of 12.6% from the original contract. The tunnel was constructed in an alluvial sediment that ranges up to 1,500 feet thick. The sediment varies from ?ne silty sand and sandy silt (SM-ML) to coarse sand and gravel (GP-GM) with varying quantities of cobbles and boulders. Most of the tunnel was constructed above the water table although one reach of almost 1,000 lf. had water to above the tunnel crown. The contractor, FCCC, used a Lovat 15 ft. 3 in.900 hp shielded TBM with multiple doors (4) of variable opening to excavate and support the tunnel. Tunnel supports were 5 in. WF 16 lbs. per foot at 4 ft. spacing and4 in. Douglas Fir lagging. Tunnel excavation was worked in 10 hour shifts with additional equipment maintenance and repair on the off time. The original Geotechnical Design Summary Report (GDSR) established a baseline for contractual purposes of slightly over 5 boulders (between 12 in. and48 in.) per foot of tunnel. (Table 1) At the pre-bid conference, three test pits were excavated to approximately tunnel invert, one at each end of the project and one in the middle near the flow regulation structure. The test pits encountered a few boulders but did not seem to support the five boulders per foot (varied from one boulder per foot of tunnel to eight b/lf.). Subsequent to the pre-bid meeting and the test pits, BES issued any addenda which changed the baseline boulder quantity in the GDSR to 1.7 boulders per foot of tunnel (varied from0.2 to 3.5 boulders per foot) a reduction of 67% from the original baseline. It is interesting to note the two separate tunnel reaches and how they were evaluated in the GDSR. Originally the Eastern portion of the work was projected at5.08 boulders per foot of tunnel and the Western portion at 5.30 boulders per foot of tunnel for a variance of less than 5%. In the revised quantity the Eastern portion was projected at 2.01 boulders per foot of tunnel and the Western portion at 1.42 boulders

"HISTORY Tube bundle systems have been used in the coal mining industry for gas detection since the 1960’s. At the time there were developments were underway for improved gas monitoring systems. The primary gas detection systems in use were the flame safety lamp, colorimetric stain tubes and the taking of samples for analysis by gas chromatography. The MSA D6 hand held methanometer was approved in the UK for statutory methane measurements in 1972 and became very popular due to its smallness and simplicity of use. In 1973 Sieger Limited also developed a BM1 methanometer which could be installed underground and relay methane concentrations to the surface. Similar developments were underway for carbon monoxide detection and one was developed in 1982 by the Yorkshire Regional Laboratory of the NCB commercial development was undertaken by Sieger Limited who named it the ‘SCO1’. The UNOR 1 carbon monoxide and methane analyzers were approved for underground use in the United Kingdom in the late 1960’s.5 The technique was developed by Dr Luft of Bergbau-Forschung Essen and the equipment was manufactured by Maihak in Germany. The apparatus was flame proof and provided an intrinsically safe output which allowed the result to be telemetered to the surface through colliery communication systems. Both analyzers work on the same principal and each of the gases adsorb a certain wavelengths of infrared radiation. The detector measures the residual transmitted radiation and determines the percentage of gas present in the sample. These flameproof versions had proven to be robust and reliable. The UNOR 1 had been used in the Saar region of Germany and Scotland in the UK. The development of tube bundles for hydraulic controls enabled the development of the tube bundle gas monitoring systems we know today. A bundle of tubes are taken underground through a shaft, a borehole or drift then distributed to the required monitoring points. This enabled the ongoing monitoring of the underground environment when the power was isolated at 1.25% CH4. In 1972 the United Kingdom (UK) National Coal Board (NCB) produced a hand book for tube bundle systems which was subsequently updated in 1974. This is a useful guideline into the operational aspects of tube bundles systems at coal mines6. Many of the processes identified are being followed today. The United State Bureau of Mines (USBM) prepared a circular similar to the NCB handbook on tube bundle systems.7 The circular was prepared by Litton C and it was targeted at the design criteria for tube bundle the systems. The circular also states that “pneumatic monitoring systems can be used to monitor for hazards that develop quite quickly”."
