After being forgotten or ignored for nearly 100 years, the ability of bromine chemistry to extract gold from ore has been rediscovered. While bromine chemistry is similar to chlorine, there are some important differences. Bromine in its elemental form is a dense, fuming, red liquid. Elemental chlorine is a gas and requires a substantial amount of equipment to handle, store and deliver to solution. Bromine has an advantage in its ability to rapidly and completely oxidize heavy metals to water soluble halide salts. The first patent for use of bromine chemistry for gold extraction was issued in 1881 (1). By 1895, work done in Colorado concluded well roasted ores required approximately 1-1/2 lbs/ton of elemental bromine for superior extraction of metals (2)). At that time, bromine was deemed to be cost effective vs. chlorine even though it was more expensive on a pound basis than chlorine. The advent of cyanide technology virtually eliminated both chlorine and bromine from consideration for leaching of ores. Cyanide was so inexpensive that it made deposits requiring unique technologies unattractive for mining. Only since the deregulation of gold price has bromine/chlorine technology been considered for those ores not amenable to cyanide. While chlorine has found its way into the pretreatment steps, bromine is just beginning to realize its niche in the marketplace.

The economic interest of oceanic ferromanganese crusts and nodules is determined by high grades of major, rare and earth rare elements in these types of marine minerals [1]. Modern oceanic ferromanganese deposits have a global distribution with the largest fields in the Pacific Ocean. The Arctic Ocean still remains a poorly explored region. The first ferromanganese deposits from the deep part of the Arctic Ocean were recovered almost at the same time in 2012 both in US and Russian cruises to the Chukchi Borderland (1) and Mendeleev Ridge (2). Preliminary results of mineral deposits from the first area were reported at UMI-2012 by James Hein et al. [2]. We present here the data of ferromanganese deposits from the Mendeleev Ridge.

In 1900, the average U.S. citizen’s average life span was 47 years. He traveled about 1,900 km (1,200miles) in a lifetime and resided in a home with an ice-box for food storage and oil or gas for lighting. He communicated by mail, telegraph and crude telephones with limited availability and range. By 2000, the average citizen’s life span was 77 years. He traveled an average of 19,000 km/a (12,000 miles/year) by automobile alone. He resided in a home with many electrical appliances, including refrigerators and electric lights. And he communicated almost instantaneously with any other part of the globe by several widely available means, including portable phones and e-mail.

Longwall mining techniques were introduced into U.S. bituminous coal mining operations in the early 1960s. These techniques were gradually adopted by many mines during the 1970s. By 1983, considered to be the peak of the longwall mine census, there were 118 active longwall faces in 79 coal mines throughout the United States. Beginning in 1984, longwall faces began a decline in numbers that has continued to the present day (Fig. 1). The geographic distribution of longwall faces today is shown in Fig.2 according to region. A breakdown of recent longwall mine production by region is shown in Table 1. An approximate breakdown of present longwall face installations by product (metallurgical and steam) is shown in Table 2.

Hydraulic powered supports have been employed in the U. S. longwall mining for the last two' decades. Yet the sciences of roof control at the powered supported faces remain largely unknown. Many questions remain unanswered. To address the problems, field investigations were conducted from 1980 to 1984 in seven longwall faces (1-10)(Table 1). Some of the findings have been reported by Peng and Chiang (11). The basic geological conditions of these panels are listed in Table 2. The mining equipment used in these longwall panels are listed in Table 3. Instrumentation and Observation Programs Two events were generally instrumented: one was the hydraulic leg pressures of the powered supports, and the other was the canopy and base plate load distributions.

In May of 1996, Twentymile Coal Co. began Longwall mining in the Foidel Creek Mine's East Mine District. These Longwall panels are some of the longest in the world (5.48 km/18,000 ft) with very difficult and challenging geometry. The conveyance system is 1,800 mm (72 in) wide, has a 4,500 mtph (5,000 stph) capacity and employs multiple tripper drives. The trippers include traditional powering designs as well as unique regeneration and braking designs. Several components were developed specifically for this application including a mobile tail brake. Control algorithms were carefully developed and tested via computer modeling. A world production record was achieved in the third month of operation and over 1 million tons were mined in June 1997.

At least for the time being, these seems to be general but not universal agreement that Mississippi Valley type ore deposits formed entirely or in major proportion from heated connate brines (e.g. 1) Even with that agreement, major questions remain. I will present a coherent geochemical model and look at alternative views in the context of that model. The pattern of the following discussion is 1) the general geochemistry of the ore fluid, 2) the density-temperature relations and possible mechanisms of flow of those fluids, 3) the mechanisms of transportation and deposition of the ore minerals, and 4) a summary of a coherent model of genesis. The data equivocally define much about the deposits. The answer is still elusive.

Saturated and unsaturated fatty acids are used in the flotation of iron values present in iron ore. Among the several fatty acids, oleic acid and its sodium salt are widely used. To substantiate the flotation results, the quantum chemical calculations of a few such acids have been carried out by adopting the semi-empirical AM1 method. These acids have been further optimized in the presence of an iron atom. The electronic interaction of the polar carboxylic head group of oleic acid with the iron atom is higher compared to the other acids. As you know most of the gold and silver is produced by one of the following processes: (1) Agitated Leaching - Carbon adsorption or Merrill-Crowe (2) Heap Leaching - Carbon adsorption or Merrill-Crowe The figure 1 shows a typical flowsheet for recovery of gold and silver using Agitated or Pachuca Leaching Operation. The ore is crushed and ground and then leached in cyanide tanks solution using either Pachucas with air agitation or tanks with mechanical agitation. The soluble metal values are separated from the pulp by counter-current washing. The precious metals from cyanide solution are either recovered by zinc dust (Merrill-Crowe Process) or by loading on carbon and stripping with hot caustic cyanide solution. Gold and silver are electrowon on steel wool cathodes.

Pinson Mining Co. operates a conventional mill and two heap leach operations in north-central Nevada. The latest of these heap leach operations, the Preble project, is a low-grade, low-tonnage property made profitable through several innovative capital reduction techniques. Rapid return on investment was a prime factor in design. To facilitate this, fast-track design and construction techniques were employed. The project is a seasonal 1.5 kt/d (1 700 stpd) crush/agglomerate heap leach plant using both clay and plastic leach pads. Construction and startup were achieved through cooperative arrangements between local contractors and in-house construction personnel, with few items put out to bid. An interactive approach to design minimized lost time and construction costs.

Birnin Gwari and Alawa graphite deposits were upgraded by flotation. Using 0.5 kg/t kerosene and 0.25 kg/t sodium silicate, flotation concentrates grading 90.7% and 88% Cg with recoveries of 86.2% and 84% were produced from Birnin Gwari and Alawa graphite samples, respectively. The combination of 0.5 kg/t kerosene, 0.2 kg/t pine oil and 0.25 kg/t sodium silicate yielded high-grade graphite (92.3% Cg) with a recovery of 83.9%. Flotation with refined rubber nut oil and kerosene, at a 1:1 ratio, produced a concentrate grade of 86.3% Cg with a recovery of 90.4%. With acid leaching of the flotation concentrate, a high-grade graphite concentrate containing 98% Cg was produced.

The classical slope analysis and a statistical technique were used in order to determine the iron complexes formed in the organic phase during the extraction of Fe(III) from Fe-Ni-Co sulfate solutions with Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) in kerosene. Equilibrium constants for the extraction based on these complexes were also calculated. The complexes determined were of the general form (Fe(OH)3-nRn?sHR)x' where n varied between 1 and 2.5 and s between 0 and 3, and both were found to be decreasing as the iron loading in the organic phase increased. Values of 1,2 and 3 were generally found for x, indicating that the complexes were monomers, dimers and trimers.

A fluorite ore (51.85 % CaF2) containing high contents of calcite, quartz and iron oxides was upgraded by flotation using a new reagent, oleoyl sarcosine (OS). In addition, quebracho and sodium silicate were used as depressants for calcite and quartz, respectively. The effect of pH, collector and depressants concentrations on grade and recovery was determined with the aim of optimizing the flotation conditions. Application of the two-stage cleaning achieved a concentrate assaying 92.17 % CaF2 with 80.1 % recovery. The Si02 content (0.76 %) was below the required level of 1 % SiO2. The mechanism of interaction between OS and fluorite, as compared to oleic acid, is also elucidated based on the zeta potential measurements.

M.S. Azun I do not at all agree with the basic points of the author's conclusion. The use of lognormal or normal model to respond to the attribute distribution function should be carefully questioned. If fitting a distribution function of regionalized variables is the main purpose, one may employ one of certain well-known families of distributions, such as Tukey's lambda functions. For instance, the distribution function of gold assay values studied by Krige (Krige, 1978) may fit the lognormal model well, but one should not exclude that the basic idea of using the distribution function of observed data is to have insight of the physical mechanism that gives rise to the regionalized variables. In Applied Geostatistics, there are many examples considering only lognormal or normal model for the distribution function of geostatistical data even if the observed distribution function has more than one mode. Of course, using lognormal or normal model always brings easy computation for the statistical properties of attribute under investigation. Still, I object to adopting any of those models without having any "statistical inference." As seen from the author's paper, lognormal and normal model produce the same average grade (0.746% copper) and almost the same sample variance. Therefore, which model explains the probabilistic behavior of ore deposit is always an important question that should be replied by the geostatistician using not the common sense but the statistical and probabilistic methods. For kriging procedures, such as linear kriging, one should describe either second order stationary properties or bivariate properties of regionalized variables. Second order properties, such as correlogram function or semivariogram function, are the inputs of the so-called kriging equations. Selecting one of any useable models for the observed second order properties, such as spherical model, is not easy since the models are not based on the correlations structure of the regionalized variables. How those models being used in Applied Geostatistics can be distinguished is another important problem. One may develop many fitting models to respond to the observed second order properties of regionalized variables. However, I suggest that the model should be based on the probabilistic behavior of geologic process. The author used spherical model for copper, wolfram, and silver grades from isotropic sector (Fig. 2, 4, 3b) and exponential model for silver grades obtained along raises in isotropic sector (Fig. 3a). It seems that those semivariograms given in Fig. 3b for isotropic sector and Fig. 4 may be described by the random model implying that regionalized variables do belong to renewal process (Azun, 1983). If I knew the total number of data points used in estimation, I may prove that my conclusion is correct. Recalling the test for the first order sample correlogram value, the test procedure is introduced such that the independence is rejected if [ ] where Za/2 is the a/2 percentile of standard normal random variable and N is the total number of samples used in estimation (Azun, 1983). For the other observed semivariogram functions I suggest the author might try to use the so-called "Markovian model" describing not only the correlation structure of regionalized variables, but also the physical mechanism that produces the regionalized variables. The Markovian model for correlogram function is, [ ] The Markovian model for the other second order properties of ReV are also derived. T ve B, in the above equation, show, for example, structural change and mineralizational variation in a considered deposit, respectively (Azun, 1983). In selecting any model, it is not easy to search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. The Markovian model, based on a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables and respond to all properties. Random model and the so-called hole effect structure can be easily defined as a special form of the Markovian model (Azun, 1983). An estimation of any second order properties of regionalized variables may be computed through (N-1) lag. However, the dependency between the regionalized variables may be deemed to have "died out" after the so-called stationarity width (range). In practice, the estimation is carried out through 25% of the total number samples available. Therefore, the large fluctuations around the zero level and variance for correlogram or covariogram function and semi-variogram function, respectively, cannot be observed. Since the number of pairs involved in the estimation of higher second order properties is small, the estimation variance at those lags is large. There is no need to show higher order estimated second order properties. The unexpectedly quick recovery in world crude steel production in the second half of 2009 was due almost entirely to increased production in China that began in late 2008. Previous peaks in monthly production in China were matched by April 2009. The rest of the world had still not reached pre-crisis production rates by May 2010. Chinese production drives growth, but there has been some growth in most other larger crude steel producing countries as well, compared to production in 2009. If the production rate of the first four months of 2010 continues, the total output of crude steel in 2010 will be somewhere around 1,410 Mt (1.5 billion st), the same as in the record year of 2007.

In three recent publications, Klimpel et al (1988) and Klimpel and Hansen (1988, 89), the theory and invention process behind the identification of two new classes of sulfide mineral collectors were summarized. These two new families can be represented by the 111 generalized formulate: R1-S-R1 -NRI III (denoted as the F-series chelation family) and R-S-R or R -CHSCH-R (denoted as the S-series redox family). The influence of systematic changes in the various R groupings on laboratory batch flotation cell tests has been covered in the above references and will not be repeated in this paper. In particular, the recent article by Klimpel and Hansen (1989) should be studied as a research introduction to this paper.

Gold heap leach operations often process low grade ores with little margin for cost increases. The advantage of heap leach operations is the considerable savings in both capital and operating costs. This paper looks at an alternative pH modifier to lime in the heap leach process, namely bauxite waste mud or red mud. The red mud can contain trace amounts of gold and was found to be an excellent source of slow release sodium hydroxide for long-term pH modification. Column cyanide leaches showed that 25 kgt-1 of red mud provided a higher pH and longer pH modification than 0.25 kgt-1 of lime. Contaminants leached from the red mud hampered the adsorption of the aurocyanide complex onto activated carbon.

Through the USGS National Coal Availability pro-gram, two San Juan Basin studies have been completed. The study areas are in the northwest Bisti field, Fruitland Formation and in the eastern Standing Rock field, Menefee Formation. Original resources are 4.66 Gt and 3.46 Gt (5.14 billion stand 3.82 billion st), respectively, in the Bisti and Standing Rock areas. Bisti coal resources are greatly reduced by the Bisti-De-Na-Zin wilderness area (1.13 Gt (1.25 billion st)). Technological restrictions remove 31% from Standing Rock original resource. Available resources are 60% (2.79 Gt(3.07 billion st)) of the Bisti original resource and66% (2.26 Gt (2.49 billion st)) of the original Standing Rock resource.

This paper presents the results of the remediation of the Gregory Gulch #1 Superfund site, an EPA Clear Creek Superfund project located in central Colorado. The Gregory Gulch #1 site was an historic gold mine and mill located within the city limits of Central City, Colorado. Remediation efforts included the use of the Envirobond™ additive to chemically bind the metals in 3,000 tons of acid generating mine waste that contained high levels of arsenic, lead, zinc and mercury. The toxicity of the mine waste amended with Envirobond™ was not only reduced to RCRA TCLP standards but also to the more stringent UTS standards. The final cost of the treatment was much less than standard industry solidification processes and significantly less than offsite disposal options.
